Alcohol blitz just the start Andrew Board
Nelson drivers failed badly during a trans-Tasman police blitz on alcohol. Police were out in force over the weekend for part six of Operation Unite, which involved police in New Zealand and Australia, including 43 officers from Nelson. Nelson police made dozens of arrests and breath tested 2545 drivers, with eight over the limit, putting the region amongst the worst in Australasia. “That’s a disappointing, discouraging result,” says Inspector Brian McGurk. “That puts us as probably one of the more disappointing results across the two countries. Some places in Australia are getting half of that rate.” Police also caught out two li-
censed premises selling alcohol to minors, out of the 31 venues they visited. Ten infringement notices were issued to minors drinking and several to people “side loading”, says Brian. “That’s where people sneak out of bars and drink their own alcohol before going back into the bar. We have pre-loading and now side-loading.” Ten boaties were also tested for alcohol in the Marlborough Sounds as part of the operation, but with no law around alcohol consumption on boats the tests were voluntary and unenforceable. Brian says one person refused the test and two would have failed if they were under the age of 20. Brian says the crackdown on alcohol misuse will continue in Nelson as the holiday season kicks into overdrive.

Mass quake review set for Nelson Phillip Rollo
A Government proposal to have every single building, other than single storey homes, undergo earthquake safety reviews could force businesses to close. The proposal is in response to a Canterbury Earthquake Royal Commission report on quake-prone buildings. It states that if the review does not meet the current 33 per cent threshold for seismic safety, the owner of the building will have to get it strengthened to meet that threshold otherwise it will be pulled down within 15 years. In Nelson, strengthened buildings must meet a new 67 per cent threshold and each building-owner would have just five years to have the assessments done, once the law is changed. The Vic Brewbar, which is situated in a building first constructed in 1889, has just under-
gone hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of repairs, making it “the safest building in Nelson,” meeting the 100 per cent rating. General manager Phil Williams says his business benefited because it had a great working relationship with the landlords, but other businesses might not be so lucky. “I fear for business owners that don’t have landlords that are overly supportive,” says Phil. “They’ll struggle for sure.” He says The Vic Brewbar has faced six months of difficulty during the process, closing for three and a half weeks. “You still have bills going out but no money coming in. In today’s financial position it’s very difficult on business owners.” Opus International Consultants Ltd building solutions manager Hans-Peter Froeling says this will have a massive impact on the Nelson region. However, he believed it was a good idea. “Absolutely, just because of the
safety for people,” says Hans. He believed some businesses “might be” forced to close if there were significant strengthening costs involved. “I think the threshold should be even higher. It depends on what area of the country, because some areas are far more at risk than others.” He says the cost of an earthquake review varies depending on the complexity of each building, but that the minimum cost of a single building is usually around $2000. The proposal would be a huge upside for companies such as Opus International, which are already employing more staff to cope with the ongoing demand. “It keeps quite a few of us quite busy. We have employed more staff but that will be the pressure with having to do so many properties, there is not enough staff in New Zealand to do it.” Hans believed it was a good idea for the results to be made public.

Airport expecting Christmas rush Nelson Airport is preparing for its busiest few weeks of the year, with 76,000 passengers to go through the airport this December. Airport chief executive Kaye McNabb says an average of 1.5 people go to the airport to see off or greet each of those passengers, creating “Christmas buzz” at the terminal. “Nearly 2000 scheduled passenger landings and departures will happen through the month and all will be close to full at this time of the year,” says Kaye. “It’s a great fun time in the terminal with lots of happy faces and excited people.” December regularly sees passenger number re-
cords broken despite Christmas day being the quietest day of the year. The airport will also have Christmas carols played by Denny Behrens on his keyboard playing live in the terminal during peak times through the week before ChristKaye McNabb. mas and the airport has also been decorated with a Christmas tree and nativity scene. “It brings an extra bit of joy to travellers and he is often joined by customers who can’t resist the urge for a carol or two,” says Kaye. Paula Draper and Roz Loasby, of the Isel Charitible Trust decorate their tree in the Nelson Cathedral with Christmas Tree Festival organiser Jim Wiseman. More than 34 Christmas trees of all shapes and sizes will be decorated in the Cathedral, supporting various causes and themes during the fifth annual festival. The festival is designed to “spark the spirit of Christmas” and the community is invited to see the display with Jim expecting hundreds of people to visit. The festival will run thorugh until December 20 with special late night viewings held on December 17, 18 and 19.

Pre-Christmas Native birds back in town Trappers hoping Nelson residents will help keep them here spending up in Nelson Andrew Board

Spending in Nelson was again on the rise last month, with an extra $2.7 million spent via eftpos cards in the region. November’s figures were released by Paymark on Friday which show increases across the country but its head of sales and marketing predicted better times ahead for December. “Based on historic figures, we expect the real rush is yet to come. Between 2007 and 2011 spending jumped an average of 27 per cent, from November to December as Kiwi’s ramped up their card usage in anticipation of Christmas,” says Paul Whiston. Paymark processes about 75 per cent of all electronic transactions in New Zealand. Last November $76.4 million went through the network in Nelson, compared to this years $79.1 million. There was a 4.4 per cent increase in the number of transactions. The November figures suggest the party season is swinging into action, with people across the country increasing their spending at cafes and restaurants by 9.3 per cent and liquor retailers by 10 per cent. Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan says the region should see an increase in spending at the last minute. “I think shopper’s are still being a bit cautious with their spend but as we move into these last two weeks we may see a last minute shopping frenzy.”
Native birds are coming back to Nelson city and a group of trappers is hoping more Nelsonians will help keep them here. Bird Life on the Grampians – or BLOG – has been trapping pests for three years now and says their efforts, along with other groups in the region, are working. They say native birds not seen in Nelson city for decades are back and they hope it’s just the start. The group is encouraging residents to help their cause and get more birds into Nelson. BLOG founder Bryce Buckland says if residents – especially those in the Brook, Wood, city and Bishopdale areas – put a rat trap on their property it would help keep a lid on their numbers, allowing birds to survive attacks from rats, possums, stoats, hedgehogs and mice. “We’ll never get rid of them but the more we can do to control their number the more likely native birds will thrive and populate our city again,” he says. One of the BLOG members, Bruce Thomas, has spent decades trapping rats and has developed his own design which he sells nationwide. Bryce says if families put one in their shed or backyard it would help their fight against the pests. Bruce says his traps are safe and designed to be easy to use and so it would

Bryce says more native birds in Nelson is great news for the city and will be a highlight for tourists as well as locals as their numbers increase. Biggest toy run ever
Kyle Neeley leads more than 400 motorcyclists through Queen St during Saturday’s Ulysses Nelson Toy Run. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
The biggest turnout on record greeted the Ulysses Nelson Toy Run with more than 430 motorcyclists making their way from Richmond to Nelson, bearing gifts and donations for the Salvation Army. The annual event, now in its 27th year, has become so iconic that committee member Allan Smith believes everyone knows about it – and the numbers were boosted with the help of Nelson’s glorious sunshine. “Any year that is over 400 is a good year for us. The weather was perfect. I think that over the years we’ve had an increasing number of family people that are turning up with their son or daughter on the back. We’ve got more motor scooters, the ride has got better organised and better planned.” The ride takes motorcyclists from
Cambridge St in Richmond to the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson. Riders can purchase a badge with the proceeds going to the Salvation Army, or alternatively they can bring a toy along to give as a Christmas present to the charity. The toys are often strapped to the fronts of the motorcycles. Around $1000 was raised from the event and Allan says the relationship between the club and the community has grown enormously in the past few years. “They remember the toy run as an iconic event that we support. We’re down at Speight’s Ale House every weekend and people see us and it draws in new members. They know if they came to the Ulysses Motorcycle Club they’ll be riding in a way that is acceptable to them.”
Mum gets a new skateboard FROM PAGE 1 few minutes,” says the mother of three who volunteers her time at holiday programmes for children who skateboard. “I’d just bought [the board] and I’d been saving up for it and my mum chipped in some money for it as a birthday present so I was pretty gutted when it went missing.” Martin says he saw the text message printed in the Nelson Weekly and wanted to help. “We started making skateboards this year with the kids and we have a few extras here so I thought we’d see if we could help.”
Sharee says the board was stolen from the backseat of her car and it’s the third board she’s had stolen over the past 20 years. “This one was really annoying because it was my baby. I’d worked it in and it was really nice to ride but I’m still hopeful it will turn up.” She says she decided to text her plight to the Weekly, hoping it would put more pressure on whoever took it to hand it in or help her find it, but was delighted with the outcome. “It’s really nice of someone to just come forward and offer to help. When something bad happens you don’t expect anything good like this to come straight away.”

Nelson Grey Power will survey its 9000 members early next year in a bid to closer align its efforts with the concerns of its members. President Neville Male says the survey early next year will give its members an opportunity to say what their concerns are in an effort to be a more proactive organisation. Neville was voted as the
president of the Grey Power branch – the largest in the country – in September after former president Gordon Currie resigned. He says after several board meetings Grey Power is now in a position to start working better for its members and ultimately grow its membership. “We want to reach five figures soon because the more members we have the more
influence we can have over local bodies and MPs for local and national issues. Having greater Neville Male n u m b e r s can influence what sort of deals and discounts can be offered by the business and

The largest ever group of Nelson scouts to receive major awards from the organisation were honoured this month as overall numbers continue to grow. Regional zone leader Bridget Smith says 15 teenagers earned their chief scout award, one cub and a kea earned their highest award and two ventures, Shaun Honor and Ben Sutton, picked up the Queen Scout award. She says the number of local scouts earning awards represents plenty of hard work and by the end of this year there will be another two ventures that would have earned their Queen Scout award – the highest award in the movement. “They need to have a lot of dedication to get this far. Local women take a stand against violence The community walked the talk on Saturday when it came to making a stand against violence towards women. A group of 100 people gathered at the church steps on Trafalgar St and walked the journey to Tahunanui Beach to raise awareness of the high number of domestic violence incidents in our region. Soroptimist International Nelson and Waimea organised the event and were joined in their efforts to bring domestic violence issues into the public eye by Women’s Refuge, SASH and people from all over Nelson and Tasman. Organiser Joy Oakly says this was the first time they had coordinated such an event which was held alongside other international awareness activities and says she was really pleased with the turnout and attention they received during the walk. “We had a lot of support, cars were tooting and people were waving. People knew what we were doing and we were really pleased

Stores’ accessibility praised Four businesses from four different sections of the Nelson-Tasman region were praised for their instore accessibility last week. The Accessibility 4 All (A4A) Forum launched an accessibility checklist to help businesses meet the needs of customers with accessibility issues. The checklist, which can be picked up from both council offices, is titled Good Access = Good Business. It is a self-assessment guide covering 10 key areas that businesses may wish to consider to improve their accessibility and consequently attract more customers. As part of the launch, which was held at the Tasman District Council on Friday, four businesses were acknowledged for already demonstrating good awareness of accessibility. Those businesses
included NZ Post Shop on Hardy St, McGlashen Pharmacy on Queen St, Astrolabe in Motueka and the Golden Bay Museum. Other businesses that were highlighted as having good accessibility included Shanton’s, Taylor’s in Nelson and Richmond, Coupland’s Bakery, Bendon in Nelson, Mondo Travel and most banks. The A4A forum, which is supported by the TDC and had its checklist printed thanks to funding from the Nelson City Council, had a mystery shopper visit each town’s CBD to review the accessibility. Earlier this year, council staff, along with Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, walked through Richmond with blind masks, ear muffs, baby strollers and in wheelchairs to test it out for themselves.

Record year for Shop ‘n’ Win
A heavy storm over Nelson last Thursday night brought down trees in Stoke and cut power to homes in Stoke, Atawhai and Richmond. Above is a tree that came down at the entrance of Nayland School.
Other trees were down at Broadgreen House and Isel Park. The spectacular thunder and lightening storm lit up the skies above Nelson but no other damage was reported. Photo: Andrew Board.

Shop ‘n’ Win has already smashed all of its previous records, with a whopping 60,000 people now entered in the competition. With only a few days left, shoppers only have until December 16 to be entered in the sixth annual Shop ‘n’ Win draw. Shop ‘n’ Win gives one lucky shopper the chance to win $5000 cash for Christmas, and the owner of the business that the winner shopped at also wins $2000 cash. The promotion is run by Waimea Weekly, Richmond Unlimited and all of the participating businesses. Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page says the overwhelming response highlights exactly how wide the locally-owned paper’s readership is. “The response from all of the retailers has been phenomenal," he says.

Lantern walk is back After missing 2011 due to flooding, the annual Lantern Celebration is back. Organisers are urging people to grab the kids and a torch, and head to the Botanical Reserve this Saturday night for some summertime magic at the Lantern Celebration. The event begins with a crea-
tive lantern-making workshop at the reserve from 5.30pm before the celebrations start in earnest at 7pm with a walk up the Centre of New Zealand hill. Summer in Nelson festival director Sophie Kelly says the theme for the Lantern Celebration is Creatures of the Night, with all kinds of creations, in-
stallations and music waiting to surprise and enchant as walkers make their way up the hill. Organisers are encouraging everyone to get creative and bring along homemade lanterns if they can’t make the workshop beforehand. Because of the fire risk, use a battery or solar powered light. Little Oceans has won a NZ on Air music grant worth $10,000, after winning November’s wildcard chart on website The Audience. The band members, Josh Edmonds, Matthew Johnston and Sam Edmonds, pictured left, beat off hundreds of New Zealand musicians to claim the prize. The Audience allows musicians to upload unreleased demos which are then voted on by the general public. The band was yet to formalise exactly how the money will be spent but say it was likely to go on filming a music video and recording a single.

On the lightening storm: We had a huge blast of lightning and a clap of thunder that shook the house [in Stoke]. Reckoned it was right over top of us. Trevor Walsh. Same here Trevor...our house shook too, also in Stoke....kids not happy at all!! Beckie Thompson. I’m in Stoke, deck a bloody mess, plants, chairs, mat etc went flying. Shelter cloth ripped down off deck, house shook, kids all bar one woke up, animals all got to come inside, power flickered, Sky went down for a bit and got to see the best lightening display I have
seen since I was a lil girl. Jewels Mckenna. Same! Just by the hospital. Lights flickering but nothing else. Exciting, hope no serious damage
though! Holly McLean.
I'm in Stoke too and our house shook too. I grabbed my daughter as her bed is surrounded by windows I was really frightened! Megan Bond. Wasn't very nice here in Stoke. Thought the house was gonna come to bits. Man it shook and the wind and rain were so strong. All quiet and still now thank god. Lisa Nicol.

Hey Nelson Weekly can you tell me why retail staff are so rude in Nelson? I'm trying to spend money here! Trying to send you a photo from my phone of the sunset at Rocks Rd. If it doesn't come through I can tell you that it's beautiful and worthwhile for a photo!!! Fake IDs: I manage a bar security company and we are trained to check thoroughly. Partial responsibility should still lie with us and the bars. But the ability to only fine the fraudster $1000 is only a very small deterrent maybe greater responsibility should be with fraudster. A fine of $5000 or $10,000 would that put them off? Stu Anderson.

Algae kills family puppy: Makes you think twice. My dog may drive me mad at times but would hate this to happen to him or anyone’s dog. Feel for the family who lost their puppy. Marie Allen. Didn’t know anything about it before now really. RIP puppy. Jasmine Nicholson-Mooney. I won't be taking my dog to the river for a while that's for sure! Jem Wastney. Nick Smith to vote against gay marriage: The people that vote for Nick Smith are against gay marriage, hence his decision, whether he agrees is irrelevant - he has to vote this way to keep his seat. They are white middle to upper class conservative Nelsonians a large percentage Christian and of the older generations. If younger people, lower class people and atheists voted he probably wouldn't be our MP and we might have a different MP who voted for gay marriage... Stacey Gambell. He sent out the survey, got the results back and is supporting the majority voters. Good on him for not being afraid to state how he feels about marriage, knowing there will be people who are going to verbally abuse him. Chantél de Ru. For goodness sake people. He's doing what he's told. By us. He is simply voting what Nelson has told him to vote. Do I agree with the decision? No. But I'd be really pissed off if the elected official from our region decided to just ignore what his constituents' voted. It's not his vote, it's Nelson’s. Callum Payne.
What's the difference between his marriage and that of same sex?! Nothing! How would he like it if he got told he couldn't have married his now wife? He would be livid! Bridget Barnes. Nick Smith shouldn't have the right to vote against gay marriage. What two people do in their own private lives is up to them and who is he to say otherwise. I know plenty of people in same sex relationships and also know a lot of people who support gay marriage. Paula Stechman. God says to love everybody, it does not matter whether they're gay or straight. The bible says "love thy neighbour" not “love thy neighbour, unless they're gay”. Everybody deserves love and to be loved, and getting married is a simple way of showing that love to another person. In 50 years’ time our grandchildren are going to be looking back at this issue thinking that we were idiots and about how disgusting it is, in exactly the same way that we look back on black civil rights these days. Kayla Jones. Marriage has to move with the times. People should be free to choose, NZ is a country made up of many beliefs and cultures not just that of the Christians. Brett Thomason. Everyone gay or straight should have the right to marry. For Nick Smith (or anyone else) to vote against something that doesn't affect their life in any way but deprives other people of choice, is wrong!! Carolyn Wright. Thanks for all the great feedback, keep it coming. Editor.

their IT needs. A computer technician by trade, local Nelsonian Nigel Curtis and his wife Cheryl wanted to provide unbeatable IT services to local residents and businesses. With a great reputation to back up Nigel’s many years of experience, together they set up PC Systems in 1987. For 25 years they have helped Nelson businesses move with the times, from the installation of a first computer, setting up a company network to the arrival of the internet. Everyday Nelson people and small businesses use computer technology to their best advantage thanks to the team at PC Systems.Nigel says Nelson businesses have flourished from the implementation of efficient and reliable computer networks. When he first set up PC Systems, most small businesses could not afford to have a computer or didn’t know how to use one. Introducing computers, servers and networks streamlined local companies who up until that point had contracted all accounting and word processing out to bureaus or did it manually. The arrival of the internet saw Nigel successfully help Nelsonians make the most of the world wide web and he says computers are now a crucial backbone to any successful

Nelson cricketer in frame for World Cup
Victoria Abbott has been named in the 30-person White Ferns squad ahead of next month’s ICC Women’s World Cup. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Victoria Abbott has an outside chance of making the ICC Women’s World Cup, having been named an initial 30-person squad released last week. But despite the good news, Victoria says she might have left her run too late with the squad set to be cut down before any matches are played, meaning newcomers will be picked on recent domestic form only. “I haven’t really performed so well in the first couple of rounds,” says the Otago Sparks all-rounder. “I’m getting good starts and not kicking on so I’m not expecting to be picked but I am really privileged to be part of that first squad. It’s a huge confidence booster for me.” Victoria, who also plays for the Wakatu men’s division two side, was picked in the White Ferns ICC Women’s World T20 preliminary squad in July, but was not included in the final 14. She has since been involved in the New Zealand Emerging Players squad on a tour of Australia, which included around half a dozen White Ferns. “I didn’t get to play many games in Aussie, so it was pretty cool [to be named
in the latest squad]… I wasn’t exactly expecting to be part of this 30.” Even if she does not make the World Cup squad, Victoria has set her sights on playing for the White Ferns in the next couple of years. “The next focus for me over the winter will be consistency with my bowling and just trying to push for that spot next year. There’s
a lot of all-rounders coming through so I just need to set myself apart from the rest.” Being the only senior female cricket player in Nelson, Victoria says the Wakatu squad has accepted her as one of the guys. “They’re a really good bunch of guys and they make me feel included.”

Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club gurnard are in abundance and Delaware Bay is the go to spot for them. Make sure you drift around with flashers or slow jigs, carrots love attacking a moving target. There are still large schools of Kahawai in the bay which are easy to target with spinning lures. A few rat kingfish have been caught and the odd big one has been seen by divers, so now is a good time to get that kingi gear sorted out and give it a nudge. The smaller kingfish are now arriving also along the Boulder Bank, so target them in the morning on an incoming tide with Rapala X-Rap 30 lures and you will have the best chance. Remember photos last longer than fish so only take enough for a feed and put some of the big ones back for your grandkids.
This weekend is looking to be a good one to be heading out. If you’re after some pannie snapper try Rabbit Island around the eight metre mark. This seems to be where the pannies are, and go in closer if nothing is happening until you feel the paddle crabs grabbing your bait, then you know you’re in the right place. If you want bigger models head out to the deep around the 20 metres plus mark. The big boys are spawning now and will be gone soon. Long lines are the easiest way to get a horse but perseverance with a stray line will get them if you spend enough time trying. I’d recommend pilchards or whole salmon smelts with little or no weight. Use very light main line, 10lb-15lb with a 20lb leader, fluorocarbon.
Sidecar riders Noel Puklowski and Ben Keys roll during a frightening moment at the Nelson Speedway on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Sidecar duo shake off frightening moment Phillip Rollo Ben Keys’ friends say he is crazy for signing up to be a sidecar swinger. Following Saturday night’s frightening crash, they’ll be quick to remind him again. The sidecar scare, which saw Ben thrown off his bike and driver Noel Puklowski upside down underneath it, could have ended much worse for the two local men. Running through the moment, Ben says the bike in front of them spun out and they had nowhere to go. “We went sideways into him and just ended up rolling. We were quite bloody lucky there not to have any serious injuries. I woke up on Sunday with a few bruises but that was it,” he says. “The only thing I was worried about was if there were anymore bikes coming.”

Ben signed up to be a swinger for Mike De Gray at the beginning of the season. However, a broken shoulder has left Mike on the sidelines and Ben has been riding with Noel. Despite crashing twice in his debut season, Ben says “it’s one hell of a rush” and he tries not to listen to the concerns from his worried friends. “Yeah, I tend not to think about that. I know that friends think about how dangerous it is, they don’t like it.” The pairs focus will quickly turn to this weekend’s sidecar club championships. Having got up from the crash on Saturday to win the second race of the night, Noel and Ben will be confident they can emulate that performance. “It would be nice to take that one. The bike has the potential and everything to do it. It definitely has the speed.”

TUESDAY 11 December 2012
Brothers square off in cricket final Phillip Rollo The Edwards brothers are now a key cog in the Nelson rep team’s middle order, having been reunited in the same team just twice since they were school boys. But while Ryan and younger brother Ricky have been enjoying their time at the crease together for Nelson, this weekend they will come face-to-face again as Ricky’s Waimea Toi Toi United takes on Ryan’s Stoke/Nayland in the Car Company two-day cricket final at Saxton Oval. Ryan lays claim to the sibling dominance at the moment, with the Car Company Stoke/Nayland widely perceived as the dominant force in the past five years. However, Ricky has had the upper-hand of late with Harrington’s Beer Cafe Waimea Toi Toi United collecting the most silverware last season and are the current two-day title holders. “We might have lost one of the six finals we’ve played against him,” says Ryan. “We came up against each other in one final last year which we won, but they obviously won the two-day final and the Kevin Scoble [trophy].” Before teaming up in the Nelson representative side, the last time the pair were on the same team was at Stoke/Nayland when Ricky was just 15 years old, around 12 years ago. Ricky says teaming up with his older brother was one thing he hoped would continue despite playing at a different club. “Stoke was too strong at the time. I couldn’t make the senior side so I had to leave the club. A few of the guys out there contacted me and I tried to make a go of it,” he says. “Obviously when he went overseas it was never going to happen but now that he’s back it’s been really good playing alongside each other.” Ryan says the sibling rivalry is well and truly alive with some friendly banter shared via text message before each final. But he admits the loser doesn’t usually reply for a couple of weeks. “We take it pretty seriously when we play but afterwards if one of us happens to stumble there’s always a bit of banter. But we’re the first person to shake each other’s hand if the other one gets a 100. Me and Ricky have had an ongoing bet

Brothers Ricky, left, and Ryan Edwards will face each other in this weekend’s two day cricket final. Photo: Phillip Rollo. to see who would claim the Vonda Edwards trophy [for the batsman with the most runs at the end of the season], which is my grandparent’s trophy, so a text message will always come through to say ‘I’m catching you’.” The Edwards family continue to support both of their star boys, but it remains as a mystery as to which team they back come finals time. “I think they go into hiding. Dad [former Black Cap Jock Edwards] generally doesn’t say a lot. He just says good luck to both of us.” WTTU will go into the weekend’s final as top qualifier, meaning Stoke/Nayland must win the match to lift the trophy. Having lost by six wickets the last time these two teams met, Ryan admits his side are underdogs but anything can happen. “In terms of winning finals cricket we probably have an edge,” he says.
