Alcohol blitz just the start Andrew Board

Nelson drivers failed badly during a trans-Tasman police blitz on alcohol. Police were out in force over the weekend for part six of Operation Unite, which involved police in New Zealand and Australia, including 43 officers from Nelson. Nelson police made dozens of arrests and breath tested 2545 drivers, with eight over the limit, putting the region amongst the worst in Australasia. “That’s a disappointing, discouraging result,” says Inspector Brian McGurk. “That puts us as probably one of the more disappointing results across the two countries. Some places in Australia are getting half of that rate.” Police also caught out two li-

censed premises selling alcohol to minors, out of the 31 venues they visited. Ten infringement notices were issued to minors drinking and several to people “side loading”, says Brian. “That’s where people sneak out of bars and drink their own alcohol before going back into the bar. We have pre-loading and now side-loading.” Ten boaties were also tested for alcohol in the Marlborough Sounds as part of the operation, but with no law around alcohol consumption on boats the tests were voluntary and unenforceable. Brian says one person refused the test and two would have failed if they were under the age of 20. Brian says the crackdown on alcohol misuse will continue in Nelson as the holiday season kicks into overdrive.
