About Aldo Aldo is married to Kimberley and has three young children. He was born in Nelson as a second generation Nelsonian, educated at St Joseph’s primary school and Nelson College; and graduated from the University of Canterbury with a Bachelor of Commerce Degree (marketing and management).

An extensive career in management has seen appointments in New Zealand and Hong Kong, Shanghai and Sydney. He returned to Nelson in 2002 and became a Nelson city councillor in 2007 with the goal of making a positive change for current and future generations of Nelson residents and visitors, believing that “we can make Nelson a fun, exciting, dynamic place to live, where our children can have the career, family and lifestyle options they desire.”

Aldo was instrumental in the successful bid to host RWC matches in Nelson, and was the initiator and principal driver which triggered the referendum to amalgamate Nelson and Tasman councils.

Aldo Miccio is currently mayor of Nelson and was previously a councillor, chairman of the council’s Rugby World Cup 2011 committee and property committee chairman, the deputy chair of the governance committee.

Nelson’s nightclubs could be forced to close earlier than they do now once a new district licensing committee is established.

Spending up 5.2% Spending in Nelson has again recorded strong growth according to eftpos provider Paymark.

A new campaign aimed at stopping abuse towards volunteer parent referees and rewarding them for their efforts has been launched.

Richmond Mall and Tasman Rugby Union has combined to acknowledge the efforts of volunteer referees at junior rugby games across Nelson and Tasman and will give one $100 Richmond Mall voucher to a volunteer referee each week for the next ten weeks.

Richmond Mall manager David Hill says the mall wanted to support those who give up their time in the community. “We salute those mums and dads who give up their Saturday mornings to ensure the kids of Nelson and Tasman can enjoy their rugby. JAB rugby is only possible because of those who take up a whistle and keep the game going.”

The campaign runs in support of the New Zealand Rugby initiative APPLAUD, which encourages supporters to be good sports at schools and clubs, while also seeking to stamp out anti-social sideline behaviour.

Around 75 volunteers have participated in the Tasman Rugby Union’s junior referee course this year. TRU development officer Kahu Marfell says abusive behaviour on the sidelines of all sporting codes is an issue and anything to promote good behaviour on sidelines is welcomed.

So we are encouraging clubs to make a stand and say that behaviour isn’t acceptable and if we can reward those people who step up to the plate and actually do these jobs, then it’s great.”

Kahu says abuse towards junior rugby referees isn’t as bad in Nelson as other centres but it does happen.

He says it’s great that Richmond Mall has decided to come on board and help reward those who put their hand up to help out.

“It’s awesome, those people definitely deserve it so good on Richmond Mall for getting involved and helping celebrate these people.”

Suspicious fire damages Victory YMCA building A fire that caused damage to a building at the Victory YMCA has been labelled suspicious and is being investigated by Nelson police.

The fire started in the toilets of the building and damaged a wall that split the toilet and a kitchen.

Investigating officer for the fire service, Ross Bailey, says the fire made it to the ceiling but was cut off by fire fighters before it could do any more damage.

“Basically it’s being considered as suspicious and is under

investigation. It could have been a lot worse.”

Fire fighters were called to the scene at 5.15pm on Saturday where two trucks were used to fight the fire.

Police communication manager, Barbara Dunn, says investigations are continuing but the fire did start in the toilets, which were mistakenly left unlocked.

“The toilet is usually locked and that’s where it started but officers are still investigating whether it was delibratley lit or not.”

CBD’s $125k toilet opened They may not be gold-plated, but the city’s new toilets provide a wee touch of class for you to do your business, costing around $125,000.

The new toilets at 1903 Square were paid for from the proceeds of a land sale, so at no cost to ratepayers but the price has certainly caused a stir, with one passer-

by noting it’s a good chunk of the price to build a standard three bedroom house, without land.

The bank of three toilets was opened last Wednesday by Nelson City councillor Gail Collingwood and replaces the old Church Hill toilets. The council says it has been built with heritage features in mind, to

complement the style of Trafalgar St and 1903 square. It’s a fully-modern facility with all the conveniences you’d expect like air blade hand dryers and a wheelchairfriendly stall.

Money from the toilets came from the sale of Plunket land in Nelson city in 1993.

The council’s audit, risk and finance

committee agreed to use financial reserves, including money bequeathed and held in trusts. Passers-by spoken to by Nelson Weekly were all happy with its design, with 16 out of 20 saying it looked good and suited the area. The new toilet block was designed by local architects Jerram Tocker Barron Ltd and constructed by Nelmac.

Free milk for our school kids A group of twenty-two primary aged students from schools all over Nelson were the first to sample milk that will be given to local pupils as part of the Fonterra Milk for Schools programme.

The initiative will see a free pack of milk given daily to 2000 schools across New Zealand, with a goal of seeing more children having access to the nutritional benefits of milk.

The initiative was launched for the upper South Island on Monday at Brightwater School with principal Gerald Baldwin calling the programme “marvellous” and praising Fonterra for its sponsorship.

“It is really positive for the children to drink something healthy in a

school environment and for a New Zealand company to be so supportive, it’s great.”

Pete Mitchener, principal of Stoke School, which already offers a fruit in school and breakfast club programme, says Milk for Schools is a wonderful idea. “We surveyed our community and received 100 per cent support from parents saying they thought it was a great programme.”

As part of the roll out of the initiative, the children visited a local dairy farm to learn about sustainable dairy farming and took part in a convoy of Fonterra farm vehicles and tankers throughout Brightwater.

The annual Winter Cup at Richmond Park often plays second fiddle to the hugely popular summer meet at the same track but this year Nelson Harness Racing Club committee member Bill Monk says the weekend attracted some of the best.

“We were really pleased with the horses, they performed really well and we had the best drivers here, Anthony Butt, Mark Jones, Dexter Dunne, Ricky May, they were all here.”

Nelson Mail has taken another huge hit to its circulation, the biggest drop of any daily newspaper in the South Island.

The Australian-owned Nelson Mail has seen its paid circulation drop 6.29 per cent on the same time last year to just 13,464, show figures released by ABC Circulation.

At the same time last year its circulation was 14,943 but that also included around 500 papers it gives away.

The figures showed that the Mail had the biggest drop, percentage wise, in the South Island with The Southland Times the next worst at 5.59 per cent, Oamaru Mail at 5.31 per cent and Marlborough Express at 5.28 per cent.

Nelson Mail general manager Craig Dennis says it’s a tough time for daily newspapers. “Daily paper circulation has been challenging for us for some time as it has in line with newspapers across the country and world but readership is growing across all platforms. While our average total circulation year on year has declined from 14,943 March 2012 to 14,093 March 2013, our newspaper readership as surveyed by Nielson shows average weekly readership at 54,000 different readers compared to 56,000 one year prior.”

Putting the wood back in The Wood Nelmac staff volunteered their time on Saturday to put the wood back in The Wood.

The team of volunteers planted around 100 long term natives including totara, titoki and kahikatea on council land behind Miyazu Gardens.

The trees have all been ecosourced locally and were cultivated in the Nelmac nursery for 12 months.

The saplings planted are not even a metre tall, but over the next 20 years they will become significant trees on the Nelson skyline.

“All of the parks and reserves that we look after in Nelson include native plants, but most are only medium term and of medium height. We wanted to do something for the long term,” he says.

The idea of putting the wood back in The Wood came about during a conversation Rob had many years ago with Richard Butler, the husband of former NCC councillor Denise Hannigan.

“We were discussing what Nelson would have been like prior to European settlers arriving,” says Rob.

Originally, The Wood was a flat forested plain, full of a variety of native species. It was cleared to provide areas for settlement with the timber being used for building some of the first houses in Nelson.

We’ve learnt more about the native trees and it’s great that we have been a part of bringing back a hint of what Nelson’s landscape must have been like hundreds of years ago.”

Funding expo a hit with large crowd The Nelson Tasman Free Funding Expo was well received by a steady crowd of local community, charity, school and sport group representatives on Friday.

They soaked up the full day of information, training and networking from local and national experts on offer.

Participants attended workshops offering inside information on finding funding sources, insight into potential charity fatigue in Nelson and the dos and don’ts of successfully applying for grants and funds.

Information was also on display from the Fundraising Institute of New Zealand, Charities Services, local councils, Sport Tasman, the Department of Internal Affairs and the Nelson Arts Council giving attendees the opportunity to talk directly to funders and service providers that support the not-for-profit sector.

Janet Hardcastle, representative of the Rough Island Equestrian Park, says she has attended more than one expo in the past and always found it extremely helpful.

A local piper has more than one unique talent to boast after making waves on the local bagpipe scene, she can also play the instrument with her eyes closed.

Caley Phipps, 13, of Nelson, has come off the back of some impressive wins recently taking out the “Novice 2/4 March” and winning a scholarship at the Nelson mini band and solo competition May Day. While the pint sized piper may be new to the competitive scene after entering solo competitions for the first time a year ago, she is fast becoming one to watch according to results from the NZ Open Solo Piping Championships in Dunedin held last weekend. Unlike the contest held in Nelson, Caley didn’t earn a placing in her D Grade class but took away from it some valuable lessons including experience playing in a large competition, being surrounded by other piping youth and strangely enough, how to perform with her eyes shut. “I was watching some A Grade pipers practising and they had their eyes shut while marching so I thought I would give it a go.”

She says it enabled her to pretend she wasn’t on the board being judged but instead in a room playing to her tutor.

Caley says she will continue to enter national solo piping events while also playing as a member of the Celtic Pipe Band in Stoke.

Tuesday May 7 Following an article in the Nelson Weekly highlighting IBD awareness week and the Nelson Crohn’s and Colitis support group, coordinator Bridget Crundwell has had an amazing response with more enquiries being made, more hits on the local Crohn’s and Colitis website and people from the community coming forward to not only find out more about IBD but help the group out. One local woman has volunteered to help out at the next Saturday market information stall and Ernest Rutherford has also generously offered to host the occasional meeting for the support group and put on free supper too.

Tuesday May 7 Nayland College student Ben Seelen, 17, has returned from the youth challenge Spirit of Adventure course that the local community helped him get to. After friends, family and strangers donated $2200 towards his cause, Ben returned from the ten day youth challenge course on May 27 after sailing around the Hauraki Gulf in torrential rain, sunshine and tornado warnings, starting each day with a 6.30am ocean swim. He was also elected as captain of the $23 million ship for the final day of the course.

Tuesday April 30 After locals at the Prince Albert Hotel raised $1100 from a Tri-egg-athon event and used the funds to gift an i-pad to the Nelson Health school, 28 sick children are better off. The students at the school have taken to the ipad like ducks to water and not a day goes by that they don’t use it for study purposes. Helen Trevena, teacher at the school says the students now use the i-pad for a number of daily tasks such as writing essays, emailing, researching and reading.

St Arnaud’s $1.1m centre opens A $1.1 million centre was officially opened in St Arnaud on Saturday, creating a “fantastic” attraction to the area says Pat Gelling, a driving force behind the new development.

Pokie machines Local perfects muzzle brake for rifles Sinead Ogilvie could drop Reporter The number of pokie machines in Nelson will drop if the council introduces a "sinking lid" policy.

Nelson City councillors approved a draft gambling policy last week that is now open for public feedback until July 8.

The proposal is to make two changes to the existing policy. The first is to amend the current policy on class 4 (pokie) venues by introducing a ‘sinking lid’. A sinking lid means that no new consents for pokie venues will be issued

by Nelson City Council. The only exception could be for the merger of class 4 club venues, like RSAs, working men’s clubs, sports clubs.

The second change is to separate the current gambling policy into two separate policies.

The first policy will cover the criteria for granting or withholding consent for the establishment of pokie venues. The second policy will cover the criteria for granting or withholding consent for the establishment of TAB venues.

Details on how to give feedback will be available on the council website, from the libraries and at civic house.

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz Most long range shooters would know that in order to shoot further, have more energy, accuracy and beat the wind, you’ve got to go to a bigger rifle which comes hand-in-hand with a bigger bullet, a lot of recoil and the inability to spot your own shot.

After seeing a demand in the growing sport local hunter Greg Couper has designed a range of muzzle brakes that he says ticks all of the boxes.

His Nelson based business, Terminator Products, was born out of a love for long range shooting and a struggle with the recoil on his .338 three years ago.

“I had a .338 with a good brake from the States and it was the best you could get at the time but it was still beating out.

I went up the Wairarapa shooting long range steel targets and after you fire 40 rounds your shoulder can’t handle it. So that’s where it all started, I needed to find a better brake.”

Greg says when he began searching for the perfect design, it seemed as though no one had tested them on a large scale, so he took matters into his own hands, firing more than 300 rounds on his .338 trying out different brakes and taking note of the pros and cons.

“It didn’t appear that anyone had tested them. So I acquired all sorts of muzzle

brakes. NZ made, US made, I tested them to see what worked, what didn’t and tried to find a solution.”

Greg says that while a lot of people find a 7mm efficient, it’s about as big as you can go without a muzzle brake to cope with the recoil. While suppressors can work well on little rifles, they reduce a lot of noise but not a lot of recoil.

“A suppressor on a bigger rifle has got to be huge before it would even start to work, because of the volume of gas. You can’t contain it in a suppressor.

Road rules: Regarding road rules, someone remind Nelson drivers that they need to indicate when turning corners. I was almost hit recently and the driver had the nerve to yell at me when he was speeding and not indicating. Nelson drivers have never been amazing but seem worse lately. Harry's 60 years of potato farming

Mashed, boiled, roasted or fried, Harry Hancock says you can never eat too many potatoes, and he should know.

He planted his first potato 60 years ago, and his Tapawera based family have prospered in spuds ever since.

After moving onto a farm in Glenrae near the Motueka River in 1952, Harry and his wife Joan set up a flourishing potato farm, supplying everyone from the local fish and chip shop, a green grocer, local markets, and neighbours.

Living off the land was common when Harry moved in, with local families growing blackberries, raspberries, farming cows and potatoes, and with the help of a neighbours tools, Harry planted his first crop.

“I chose to start out with potatoes because there was a fairly immediate return. You could plant them in October and be eating them by May. We stuck with them over the years and they gave me the better part of my income.”

Harry never farmed in a big way, but says there was a good five acres of potatoes in the ground each season. They were “happy to bring in 10 tonne at the end of the season” from the crop and although the work was hard, it was always rewarding. “It was physically hard, your back was bent and you carried your sack around with you but once we picked up the last potato we were glad to be finished harvesting, it was always good to grow a good crop.”

The farm is no longer commercially run but is still in the family, with Harry’s daughter Jill and her husband taking over a few years ago. They still use a planter that was used early on,

“Joan picked potatoes and had children around the same time, there was always work to be done. It was great having the kids involved, every day when they came home from school there was something for them to do.”

Harry says he is pleased that the farm remains in the family, and as well as keeping history alive it has its benefits too with friends and family still kept in steady supply. “They still look after us, I shouldn’t think there will ever be a day when I’m short of potatoes.”

Over the years, Harry has tried all kinds of variety of potato. Rua has proven to be the best, being a good grower and unsusceptible to blight, it is not only consistent but is Harry’s favourite to eat. “We’ve grown a few interesting types of potato but Rua has proven to be the best. Mashed Rua is probably my favourite.”

Two weeks ago the Hancocks held a celebration to mark 60 years since Harry and his family have been growing potatoes. While Harry has hung up his hat on the growing side of things, potatoes still remain a staple in his diet.

“Oh dear yes, you never get tired of them. I’ve eaten them every day, they are part of a good diet. I don’t think you could ever eat too many potatoes.”

• Never be ashamed, reluctant, or any of the negative feelings to ask questions about gardening. If you don’t ask, you won’t learn. Gardeners are nice people, and most are happy to share their knowledge. Even experienced gardeners continue to ask questions.

• If you have moved to a new address, with an established garden, don’t do anything for a while.

Spend the time waiting and watching to see what will emerge in the spring, and then make your plans. An enterprising woman I know is waiting and watching to see what her newly acquired garden will show later on, but she is impatient.

So, in a little corner outside her kitchen window, she has planted a patch of brightly coloured polyanthus plants, flowering now, so that she will get the colours that she really wants. Then, she planted on the edges, a punnet of coloured silverbeet, a punnet of red leaved lettuce, and a punnet of lettuce with assorted coloured leaves. This has created a pleasing variety of colour and different foliage, pretty to look at, and edible as well. Hey presto! She has made a little pottager in no time at all.

• Continue to plant winter vegetables for a continuous supply. It is too late to sow broadbean seeds but you may pick up broadbean seedling plants still.

• Time to shop around for new season roses. These will be recently potted. Dig a hole bigger than you think you need, making a mound in the centre.

Place the rose on this, and be sure to use every scrap of potting mix when you fill in the hole as the mix will contain a quantity of slow release fertiliser to help the rose perform well. Fill the hole with soil, and gently jiggle the rose up and down to ensure against air pockets forming. Now firm the soil in and water well. PS Never plant a rose with the graft below the soil!! The root stock will take control and you will eventually lose the rose.

• It is possible to pick up plant bargains at this time of year. These may be pot bound, meaning it is high time the shrub was planted! These are perfectly OK for planting if you do a little root pruning. With a sharp spade simply slice about an inch off the bottom of the plant roots. Healthy new root shoots will grow out from this clean cut. Likewise, if a shrub is growing at an angle instead of upright in the pot, simply position it upright in the hole and you will have a perfectly plant for much less expense.

• To those of you who may think gardening is in the Too Hard Basket, you may be interested to know that the very first plant that I cultivated turned out to be a weed! I have come a long way since then.

National Volunteer Week runs from Sunday 16 to Saturday 22 June with the efforts of local volunteers being recognised and celebrated.

Volunteers fulfill an essential role in our community.

In the Nelson Tasman region last year approximately 3,000,000 hours were volunteered, and without this support many of the services and facilities that we take for granted could not be provided. The theme for 2013 NVW is “He tāngata, He tāngata, He tāngata!” Translated as “It is people, it is people, it is people,” this theme recognises the life force of volunteering- the people.

The week identifies the significant contributions that volunteers make to the Nelson community and the help they provide to people and dependant organisations. Volunteers play a major

role in the Nelson community attributing to over 3 million hours of service in the past year. Volunteer Nelson Manager Katy Steele says a great thing about volunteering is that it is very broad and versatile offering a role for everybody.

“It is important for volunteers to know that they can help in their area of interest or expertise,” says Katy.

Volunteers conduct a range of roles including environmental work, offering support to refugees, support at food banks, supporting the elderly, helping out at sport clubs and events. Katy says there is also a demand for roles that volunteers can fill on the administra-

Nelson Community Patrol (NCP) acts as extra “eyes and ears” for the Nelson Police. NCP volunteers work every Friday and Saturday nights from 10pm to 3am. Two members observe and report incidents to Comms via a Police radio in our Patrolling car.

Another person is needed to man the new CCTV cameras.

We are very grateful to all of our members who volunteer there time. The NCP is also very grateful to the Nelson City Council for their on-going support. NCP has received the support from numerous organisations over the years and our thanks extend to all those people involved.

Nelson man wins lifeguard of the year

Nelson's Ed Steenbergen was awarded the life guard of the year award for all of Canterbury and Tasman at an awards dinner in Christchurch over the weekend.

Nelson’s Ed Steenbergen has won the top surf life saving award for Canterbury and Tasman, being named as Lifeguard of the Year.

Canterbury and Tasman members were officially recognised for their hard work and dedication to saving lives on Canterbury and Tasman beaches over the weekend at the 2013 Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence in Christchurch.

Ed has been a member of the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club since 2007 and fills the roles of sport's officer, patrol captain, committee member and fundraiser. He has taken a non-competing club to having a presence at regional events along with medallist at national events. Ed has also worked closely within the local community to increase the awareness of Surf Life Saving in the Nelson area and is currently working on a plan to rebuild a surf lifesaving base close to Tahunanui Beach.

Surf Life Saving regional manager Stu Bryce says it takes a lot of commitment to be a lifeguard and the awards that were presented on Saturday are proof of that. “Ed has given up countless hours to reach this level of nomination for Lifesaver of the Year and he truly deserves this recognition."

Waimea College year 13 students Jacob Johnston, 18, and Kaine Ransby, 17, midway through their 40km swim at the ASB Aquatic Centre on Sunday. The students undertook the challenge to swim 800 lengths each in order to raise money for the 40 hour famine over the weekend.

The distance works out to be the same as the shortest distance of the Cook Strait, and took Jacob and Kaine around 7 hours to com-

plete. Proceeds from sponsorship of their challenge will go towards a $10,000 fundraising goal that the college has set for itself in combination with local youth groups Ignite Youth, Thrive Youth Detonate Youth and Encounter Youth.

Students at the college set themselves a variety of goals from going without food, to going without technology and physical challenges.

Netballers' first taste of wet weather for the season Carol Cook

The weather gods did not quite get the order correct on Saturday when some games were played in heavy rain at Saxton Courts.

The 4pm round was the worst affected as the rain poured down. I had the task of filling in as an umpire for the Waimea College Donna’s Divas against Nelson College C Grade 5 game. Umpiring is not my forte and therefore, not my most favoured part of netball – I am a great umpire on the sidelines, can see all that the officiating umpire misses but put a whistle in my mouth and I am not too crash hot. While Donna’s Divas dominated throughout the court and had a convincing 33-5 win, the game was played in great spirits in very trying conditions – I just hope I didn’t add to them.

The Grade 6 game between Suburban White and Stoke Power Signs played at 10am were more fortunate with the weather, with only a few light spits.

Poor footwork marred the game as most players in both teams were guilty of the infringement and consequently the play was constantly changing direction. In the first quarter there were only 7 goals scored – four to Stoke and three to Suburban.

Two weeks ago Stoke NBS had a nightmarish first quarter against Prices Pharmacy which left them playing catch up netball for the remainder of the game. Stoke NBS found their rhythm after the first break and the game ended with the same margin as at the first quarter.

Prices have been playing some great netball, but could be fair to say not always for 60 minutes. Top seed Waimea College will take on the promoted Prices Black who had a convincing 39-21 win over Taylors Wanderers at Teapot Valley on Sunday.

While Prices dominated in all facets of play in the promotion / relegation game they are likely to experience a baptism of fire when they meet the talented college girls.

Rabbits win nine in a row

Defending rugby league champions, Stables Richmond Rabbits were back on their home turf at Ngawhatu against their country rivals' Wanderers Wolves.

The Rabbits were looking to extend their winning streak to 9, and further cement their position at the top of the competition ladder, while the Wolves were desperate to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Conditions were not ideal for the match, and expectedly both teams were under instructions to keep passes close and protect the football.

Solid starts had become customary with this year's Rabbits side, but it would be the Wolves that starved the Rabbits of possession early, crossing for an early try to put The Stables Richmond Rabbits in unfamiliar territory. The Wolves showed more energy and passion in the opening half and would go on to score a second try and a dropped goal late in the first half to lead 11-0 going in to the half time break.

Reserve dummy half Sunny Morgan was kept warm on the sidelines, and was eagerly

awaiting his boarding pass. The words from the coaches seemed to take some effect, with standout lock forward Tristan Laubscher taking it upon himself to run the ball with purpose on every possession, something that was missing in the opening half. He had good support from returning co-captain Hoani Takao and fellow Titans book-end Tamao Piripi.

The Wolves continued to build pressure through aggressive defence and well-structured back play, and would of thought they were in for an upset win with 15 minutes to go. Sunny began to carve off meters from dummy half at ease, exposing holes behind the ruck. He would go on to be the Rabbits man of the match, scoring twice in the space of 10 minutes, both from short range.

But it was Tristan who would spoil the Wolves party by storming through a couple of defenders to win the game for the defending champions with just two minutes on the clock. Paul Savage converted the try, giving The Stables Richmond Rabbits a 16-11 win and their 9th win on the trot.
