The winner of the Nelson Car Show’s burnout competition believes the Nelson City Council should be doing more to keep the event going, despite the weekend’s comp being its last. Steve Saul aka Mr Sicko, a now two-time winner of the

burnout competition in his 1979 Ford F100, organises six similar events in his hometown of Christchurch, and says it’s a shame that the Nelson event is now ending because council consent is not being renewed at the venue next to the Speight’s Ale House. “They still have boyracer prob-

lems in Christchurch but we get a lot of entrants and everyone backs me. The council down there are really good because it’s done at a speedway,” he says.

Councillors coy on election intentions Andrew Board

Election year is under way but many of the city’s councillors are keeping quiet on their intentions come October. Nelson Weekly asked each of the region’s 12 councillors what their plans were in 2013.

Four said they were standing again, two said they weren’t and five replied saying they would wait and see. Mayor Aldo Miccio said he would wait until Easter to make an announcement on whether he will run or not, but it’s understood he will seek re-election.

Aldo’s top rival for the job in 2010 was current councillor and former deputy mayor Rachel Reese, she told the Weekly that it was “a bit early to start election campaigns” but would make her intentions clear later in the year. “The public don’t need seven months of politicians blowing their own

trumpets.” Ian Barker confirmed he will stand again this year and when quizzed if that was in his current role as a councillor or for mayor, said: “It’s open”.

“I hadn’t planned on going to any. To me Nelson doesn’t have a lot of free music events, especially for kids.”

“I’m too busy working. They attract a lot of people though and it gives the kids something to go to.”

Councillors coy on election intentions FROM PAGE 1

Eric Davy, Kate Fulton and Paul Matheson all signalled their intentions to reclaim their spots around the council table saying they still had a lot to offer. While the long-serving Gail Collingwood and current deputy mayor Ali Boswijk have said they would not be seeking re-election. Gail

told the Weekly it’s time for her to move on. “I will have served the Nelson community for six terms [18 years] and it is time for me to stand down and for others to work though the local body governance process.” Among those undecided were Pete Rainey, Derek Shaw and Jeff Rackley all saying they would

make a final decision within the next few months. Veteran councillor Mike Ward said he “probably will” stand again. Ruth Copeland was unable to be contacted. Rachel says she would encourage anyone with the right qualities to stand for council and she’d be happy to talk to them about the role. “Nelson needs people sit-

ting at that table who understand good governance. We need cando positive people with a head for responsible spending. We need people who recognise that they are in the role to promote Nelson, not themselves. We need people who understand that the job of politicians is not simply to rubberstamp staff advice. It is to exercise critical judgement.”

Car show’s burnout comp up in smoke FROM PAGE 1 But Mr Sicko believes the decision to end the burnout competition will just create more problems on the streets and that the council should be more supportive. Event organiser Steve Steel says the event was created to promote doing burnouts in a controlled environment and not on public roads. “This is what the kids do out on the road. It’s a fun event and how often do you get to see

it, let alone be involved in it?” he says. “The calibre of entrants is always pretty high but there were a number of new ones this year.” But he acknowledged that the council is not interested in supporting it. “We’re going to have to come up with a new event so if anyone has any ideas or offers then give me a ring on 021 707 212.” The rest of the podium spots went to Nelson’s Hayden Cole and Marc Cederman. Steve says the burnout competition was the

perfect warm up for this weekend’s Nelson Car Show, which is being held at the Parkers Rd end of the Tahuna Holiday Park this Saturday and Sunday from 10am. “We had a really good turnout today so it’ll be amazing to see how many turn up to the car show.” The Nelson Car Show is being held on a different weekend this year because it outgrew the previous site. Entry to the event is $5 per adult and under 12s are free.

Thousands of spectators were treated to some unruly entertainment on Saturday as performers from around the world took to the streets during the Buskerburgoo Nelson Busker and Street Theatre series. Festival director Sophie Kelly says the event was a huge success with enthusiastic crowds at all of the performances throughout the festival including a sellout performance at the Boathouse, an audience into the thousands at Fairfield House and crowds of people enjoying the street shows. She says organisers were extremely pleased with the positive feedback they had received from both spectators and the buskers themselves. A performance by Canadian busker Dado left Nelson woman Tanya Whitehead blushing after he tried to steal a kiss from her on Saturday at the top of Trafalgar St, but despite being being singled out in the crowd she says she thoroughly enjoyed the show. “It is really funny, the whole thing is brilliant for both adults and kids.” Beni Rose, 8, of Stoke says he thought it was “so funny” and “awesome” going head-tohead with Dado after he too was pulled out of the audience. Sophie says the success of the event was down to the audience. “People really enjoy the opportunity to have a laugh, that’s a big part of it.” Anne-Marie Friis says she and her children love the festival and attend it annually. “Every year we come and do the buskers, they are very good and the weather is great. We never get a bad day.”

Optometrist: AA eye test does its job Phillip Rollo If you fail an eye screening test at the AA it doesn’t necessarily mean you have bad eye sight, according to a Richmond optometrist who suggests getting it done well before your practical driving examination. Last week Nelson Weekly spoke to an 18 year old woman who had to re-book her restricted driving examination after failing an eye screening test at the Nelson AA, only to pass the same eye test in Richmond just hours later. She was not the only one either. Stoke resident David Ludlow says his 16 year old son had the same problem late last year. “It took literally a minute and they failed him. After we bought an AA membership, which they told us we could get a free eye test by joining, he was told by the optometrist that he had 20/20 vision and there was nothing wrong with him,” David explains. Hank Verhoeven of Richmond has labelled the current AA eye screening tests as “diabolical and frustrating”. He believes the AA is using sub-standard equipment because every single time he undergoes the eye screening test he fails. He has been cleared by an optometrist after each failure. “With my eyes I cannot use those machines. I have to wear soft contact lenses but even with those in the machine won’t allow me to pass the test,” he says. “I should just be able to go in there, get my test done and that’s the end of it.” But Mick Toll of SpecSavers, where the 18 year old woman then went for an eye test following her conflicting AA results, stressed

that the eye screening test is simple with only a pass or fail criteria, and quite often eye screening test failures can be the first sign that somebody needs a professional eye examination. “If anyone has one eye that is perhaps a little lazy, it will automatically fail them,” he says. “But it does that for a reason because then the health of the good eye can be looked at. We will often see people and pass them because the good eye meets the visual standard. The machine does the right thing.” Mick says the current eye screening process at the AA “works excellently” and that the public needs to allow for more time in between getting the eye test and going for their licence. “People just need to know if they fail the AA test it doesn’t mean they need glasses for driving. There is always a reason why it fails but people think it means they need glasses, get pissed off about that, come to the optometrist and we will say ‘you don’t need glasses, here’s your certificate.’” He was not sure why two of the same screening tests would have differing results, although AA statistics showed that 2.5 per cent of people fail the screening test without needing corrective lenses. David McLister, the AA driver and vehicle licensing general manager, says that previously AA customers would book their practical driving examination in store and do the eye screening test at the time of the booking. But now that more people were booking online, the recommendation that people should arrive just 30 minutes prior to the examination probably needed to be lengthened.

Police urge caution as hunt continues for rapist Nelson police are urging people to take extra care when walking at night until they catch the man who has been linked with two attacks on women over the past ten days. In the early hours of Sunday morning, ten days ago, an 18 year old woman was raped at Queen’s Gardens. Just five days later another woman was attacked on the Maitai walkway, but she was able to fight off the man and run away. Both women gave a similar description to police, that of a Caucasian man of medium build with short hair and in his 20s. Both attacks were sexually motivated say police. The first incident involved the young woman being pulled into Queen’s Gardens from behind as she was trying to call a taxi outside the Suter Gallery. She had walked there from a Bridge St nightclub. The second incident happened about 10pm when a woman had crossed over the Normanby Bridge on Bridge St. She had walked down on to Maitai River Walkway when she was grabbed from behind. She was dragged under the bridge where a violent struggle ensued. The

woman fought off her attacker and ran away, sustaining multiple bruises and scrapes in the scuffle. Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Ross Lienert praised the woman for her bravery. “She’s been subjected to a number of punches, but she’s managed to land a few of her own and escape from the attacker. She’s done extremely well under the circumstances,” he says. “It is apparent from the description of the incident that the attack was sexually motivated.” Inspector Lienert said there would be an increased police presence in the area to help safeguard the public and locate the offender. The attacker is described as Caucasian, about 5ft 7in, of medium build with short hair and is believed to be in his 20s. He was wearing dark blue baggy jeans which had a tear at the seat, and a grey long sleeved hoody with a zip up the front. The hood was worn up and had a light coloured lining and a small tear. Information can be given by calling Nelson Police, 546 3840. Anonymous information can be given by calling Crimestoppers, 0800 555 111.

Police hailed for bravery Two Nelson police officers were awarded the silver merit award last week, after helping save two suicidal people in two separate incidents. Constable Glen Lloyd Jones and senior constable Peter Cobbledick were both praised for their efforts by district commander superintendent Richard Chambers at the Pay Parade ceremony at the Nelson police station last Friday. In all, 29 officers were presented with various awards most of them for their work in Christchurch after the earthquake or for long service. But it was the actions of Glen, who around a year ago spent an hour talking to a man at Rabbit Is who had a sawn-off 22 gun to his head, which drew the most praise. Glen’s family from Wellington attended the parade and he says it was a proud moment. “I was a bit nervous but it all turned out well. It was a pretty good day.” He says it’s certainly not the first time he’s had to

check on a sucidial person but this incident was a bit different. “He just didn’t want to come. It took us a wee while but we got there in the end and it came out all good with nothing bad happening so it was a good result.” Richard said the actions of Glen and Peter were outstanding and the sort of work that give police a good name. Peter wasn’t at the parade but earlier accepted the award from Richard who said he smashed his way into a Brightwater garage to drag a man, who was attempting to asphyxiate himself with carbon monoxide, to safety. Detective Pat Nally received the District Commander’s Certificate of Commendation and Geoff Scott, who is now retired, was awarded a certificate for 40 years’ service. Senior constable Gerry Tonkin was also awarded the 35 year clasp for long service and good conduct.

The two dogs up for adoption are Ellie, a labhuntaway mix, who is approximately 10 months old, and Cefi, a “seriously sweet” three year old terrier-collie mix. Karen Howieson of the Nelson Ark says Cefi would make a great obedience dog and both have had basic training. Full house for grand finale The grand finale to the Adam Chamber Music Festival was well received by a full house at the Nelson Cathedral on Saturday night. Over 20 artists from both overseas and New Zealand performed chamber music works throughout the biennial festival which was held over the last week. Organiser Bob Bickerton says the finale brought to a close yet another hugely successful event that drew in audiences from around the world. “It went very well, we have had great feedback from both musicians and audiences.” He says over 6000 people attended the 27 performances held at different venues throughout the region. “We worked hard to create a festival atmosphere this year. It was superb, it is definitely the leading chamber music event in the country.”

Aerobatics over Nelson: Hey Nelson Weekly, can you tell me what the planes in the sky were today [Sunday]? (Via text). Yes, they were Royal New Zealand Air Force’s formation aerobatics team, The Red Checkers. Full story on page 13. Buskers go good: Went to the Buskers Go Bad show at the Boat House on Friday night,

they were superb. Well done to all involved. (Via text). Laptop too costly? Thanks for the story on Garin College which now requires students to have a laptop. I will not be sending my children there. Totally over the top costwise in tough times like these. (Via text).

Response to story on a failed AA eye test: I failed my eye test there so had to pay for a test at the opticians which I passed. Maybe Telecom Business Hub Tasman are… there is somethong wrong with the machine! Jade Lowe.

I failed the eye test for my full license in AA Nelson, they still let me do the test however and I passed. They just said one eye is more dominant than the other. Ella Kilpatrick. I also could only see the two columns in Nelson, they told me it was because my eyes focused as opposed to looking forward. Sharon Aitken. The same thing happened to me. I went to the optometrist and got 100 per cent so they said my eyes just weren't compatible with their machine. Hannah Coote.

was referred to optometrist which I had to pay for it and said it was fine!! Not quite experienced enough me thinks!! Jo Williams. Reaction to the burnout competition: Was awesome especially the top three place getters they were the best to watch. Michael Kemp. A response that was later removed by the poster, said the event was offensive and said it flies against the council's clean air policy. The posters first name was Tracy. Offensive... oh my god! Haha. These events should be on a couple times of year. Cheryl Roach. I'm with Tracy, sorry. We live in Annesbrook and had to close the house up and retreat inside from the smell and smoke of burning rubber. Not everyone is a petrol-head - great events if you are, but couldn't they be held somewhere not quite so close to a residential area? Pauline Hadfield. We live in Stoke not far from WOW and we had no issues. Enjoy listening to the crowds and the smell of rubber not that bad. Maybe if people stop being so up tight about it. I'm prerty sure your partner/husband/brother were young once! Nicky Wiren. Don't even think the smoke was thick enough to even leave the area Pauline, maybe you guys could help us out

by pointing out or finding us a new area?? We all pay our taxes etc so why can't we enjoy something too? If we can get another venue how would you two ladies like to jump in the passengers seat or maybe we could find you a car to have a go in, its really a lot fun. Jamez Hume. Oh dear. It is sad that people complain about something that happens but once a year. I live very close to WOW and smelt the rubber burning. My home was filled with the stench so I raced upstairs and inhaled deeply. Brought back memories of my youth down the back beach doing burnouts on the judder bar, with diesel. Did I find it offensive? No. Did the smell bother me? No. Did the noise bother me? No. Instead, I closed the windows, sat outside and listened. I loved to hear the tyres popping, loved the commentator, loved the cheers and whistles of the crowd. Nice to have some spirit in good old Nellytown. But, I am thankful it's not on tomorrow. Karen Burns. Parking at Nelson Hospital: Car parking at the hospital has become very difficult at times and not all of us travel by car anyway. If you have an appointment or are visiting the hospital on a week day why not travel by NBus, Route 1 Richmond to Nelson. Bus travel is Free to Gold Card holders between 9am and 3pm, outside these times you have to pay the fare. A concrete path will shortly be laid across the garden strip, next to the bus stop, cross this and straight ahead you will see the buzzer. S A Miles, Stoke.

Cawthron opens its doors to the public More than 300 people discovered the weird and wonderful world of science when the Cawthron Institute opened its doors to the public on Sunday. The popular open day, now its third year, gave the community a chance to explore the institute’s Glenhaven Aquaculture Centre. During guided tours throughout the day, visitors had the chance to talk to scientists, see a scallop’s eyes, monitor the heart rate of a mussel and were shown around the laboratories and hatchery areas which house thousands of mussels, oysters, scallops, paua and geoduck. Community educator Jo Thompson says the open day was all about welcoming the public to witness the work carried out at the Cawthron Institute and was a chance to see how the current research projects relate to everyday life. “The open day is about getting the public learning about our science and explaining it in interesting ways relating to their daily lives.” She says it was great to see so many people young and old exploring the facility along with a large number of families. Like previous years she says the tours were fully booked out. Darron Jones went along with his family and says he was impressed by what the institute had to offer. “I’d heard about their open days in the past and have always wanted to come along. I’ve always been fascinated by it so it was cool to actually come out and see what an incredible facility they have here.” For those who missed out on the open day, tune in to Fresh FM to hear a behind the Mark Camara shows Kaiya Adams, 11, of Nelson some experi- scenes radio segment with the Cawthron Inmental Bluff oysters during an open day at the Cawthron In- stitute. This will be a regular show every Monstitute Glenhaven Aquaculture Centre. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. day at 5.40pm.

Nelson’s first skydive wedding

A local marriage celebrant says he got the shock of his life when he was asked to marry a visiting German couple at 3,500 feet above ground and was even more surprised to be asked to seal the deal with a skydive jump from 16,500 feet. Nelson marriage celebrant Lester Oakes married Jan Schlesner and Susann Lasch on Saturday, making the couple’s dream wedding possible when he performed their ceremony in a small sky dive plane followed by the jump. The couple who first met while learning how to sky dive wanted to tie the knot in the same way and approached Abel Tasman Sky Dive Motueka to organise the region’s first ever marriage of its kind. Lester followed the couple out of the plane door after the paper work was signed off, completing his first ever skydive and what he describes as his most unique wedding. “I’d even put it above the ceremony where I had to dress as Elvis for a Vegas-style wedding.”

Nelson marriage celebrant Lester Oakes marries German couple Jan Schlesner and Susann Lasch shortly before they skydive out of a plane over Motueka.

RO CAMBRIDGE, host of the Nelson City Council radio show ‘My City, My Council’

Crowds of excited fans gathered at the Tahunanui Playing Fields on Sunday as The Red Checkers flew overhead. The Red Checkers, the Royal New Zealand Air Force’s formation aerobatics team, showcased its flying skills for free in the skies of Nelson above the Tahunanui suburb, and many were thrilled to see them for the first time or again, having previously witnessed their death-defying stunts at air shows around the country. Sharon Entwistle and Miriam Watson were down at the playing fields on Sunday and say it was the first time they had witnessed the skills of The Red Checkers. “It’s a big thrill to see them,” says Sharon. “I just hope there are thousands of people down on the beach watching it because it’s definitely worth it,” says Miriam, who added that she told everyone she could to head down and watch the display. “They’re so close aren’t they. They’re like a hundred metres above us.” Miriam says the display lived up to her expectations but she didn’t want to see anymore “frightening things” from them. “ Richmond man Wayne Mackey had seen The Red Checkers at the Warbirds over Wanaka aeroshow and

Red Checkers above Tahuna. says that the Tahunanui Playing Fields was another good location to witness them. “They’re very precise and very professional. It’s a great display and it’s a good push for the airforce,” he says. Robert McPhail, of Stoke, was impressed by the skills of the pilots. “I’ve seen them at least once before. I think it was the Red Checkers, or a similar group from the airforce.” Helen Johnson, who was visiting the region, says she had seem them flying over Auckland before. Helen came down to the Tahunanui Playing Fields “for something to do and a bit of entertainment,” she says. “It was a great midday activity and you don’t see things like this too often.” The Air Force has a close association with Nelson as the Nelson Airport was an RNZAF station during the Second World War, and the Air Force still conducts a lot of training in the area.

Rutherford St cottages are a touch of history The story behind six cottages at the top of Rutherford St is proving to be a mystery. While the buildings are a recognised heritage precinct in the Nelson region and protected under the NZ Historic Places Trust, little is known about their history and who once lived in them. Information provided by the Nelson City Council and the Nelson Provincial Museum shows that all six of the cottages were built in 1887 by bricklayer William Dear, who also built other homes

in the Nelson region. Each of the cottages still retain the quaint picket fence style of their original design and while all of the cottages are currently occupied or rented as holiday homes, the current residents spoken to can't shed any light on their history. Lisa Mortensen says she doesn't know any of the story behind the cottages, despite having lived in one for around two years. "Someone once told me they were called the Dear Cottages but other than that I

have no idea." Nelson Provinicial Museum chief executive officer Peter Millward says that he would welcome any information on the history of the cottages and urges anyone who knows the background of the homes to come forward. "We would welcome any opportunity to add information on the cottages to our collection." Do you know anything about the cottages at the top of Rutherford St? Email Sinead Ogilive at reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz.

After a spate of unauthorised vehicle access in the forestry last year a key change has seen recreational horse riders locked out of some of their favourite forestry routes. While several thousands of dollars have been spent on installing customised horse gates in some areas, some horse owners are frustrated that they now have limited access and what they say are worrying safety issues. Action Forest Management runs security and permits for access to forests owned and managed by Hancock Forest Management and Tasman Forest Management. Permission is currently available for entry into privately owned forestry for horse riding, mountain biking, motorbiking, dog walking and hunting by permit but a full lock change was conducted on all forest managed by AFM at the end of last year limiting vehicle access. New, custom built horse access gates were installed in the Wakefield area and it’s these gates that have local horse rider Sue Carn up in arms after what she says is a “hugely disappointing act that significantly reduces the amount of safe riding and access we have in the forests.” Sue says after accessing the forests for 20 years, she can’t believe she now has access through only two gates near her area. She says not only does she see the lock out as unfair, it also poses a safety risk to local riders. “We are now forced to ride on narrow windy roads or transport our horses to other restricted venues to ride. Previously we could avoid all forestry traffic and ride for miles in safe areas and while I realise access is not a right, it was a lovely privilege.” She says many will now be forced to ride at home in the paddock or transport their horses a considerable distance to find a safe place to ride. Rory Cobb, technical forester for Action Forest Management says both the lending and losing of forestry keys had resulted in an increasing amount of unauthorised vehicle access and theft of forestry equipment such as diesel, tools and timber in all forest areas managed by AFM and they were forced to change the locks. “The number of keys in circulation

was too large, they were being stolen, lost and given away.” Rory says the introduction of horse gates was done not to exclude any particular group, but rather a way of reducing the amount of people with vehicle access to the forests. “Horse riders were a group identified that were able to still use the forests for their intended use, without the need for a vehicle. The gates allow a horse through while keeping vehicles out.” Rory says local riders from the Wakefield area were given the opportunity to test out the new design of horse gate and changes were made based on feedback given after a trial gate was installed, but Sue says she finds it hard to imagine what riders in the area were canvassed for an opinion of the design as she wasn’t aware of any change until arriving at the gate one day to find she was now locked out. “I was never approached and in fact knew nothing about it until I went to ride one day and couldn’t get in.” Mel Jones of Wakefield, a competitive western rider and recreational user of the forests says she too is frustrated with the lack of access and thinks as well as being a nuisance for riders in her area it is also a safety risk.

“When you look at it now, in my area there is only one way to get a horse out. If there was an emergency, what would we do? She says that of all recreational forestry users, horse riders were probably one of the least threatening. “At the end of the day our main care is our horses. We just want to get out and go riding, so we are always responsible.” Rory says future plans for the installation of more horse gates will be looked at where there is sufficient demand, but since the lock change there had been a reduction of unauthorised vehicle access. He added there had also been a noticeable increase in the amount of theft targeting forestry vehicles and offices. “For someone to take that step to get access to a key shows the increased level of security we now have.” Sergeant Rob Crawford, of Motueka confirmed that there had been a significant amount of recent burglaries and thefts on contractors with forestry access on personal homes, businesses and vehicles where the sole subject of the thefts were forestry keys. “These keys are well sought after by people who are illegally poaching, stealing and using them for drug related activity.”

While some people say you should never go into business with family, Lindsay and Kay Thomason say that passion along with a shared goal are the secret to success when it comes to their busy Queen St store Lynfords. The husband and wife team opened the sister store to their Blenheim-based Lynfords Furniture in 2010 and as the business has grown the family involvement has too.

Along with Lindsay’s sister Linda Rawson, his son Shaun Thomason jumped at the chance to work alongside his dad and for the family business. Kay’s son Hamish Greenwood also helps out with deliveries and Lindsay says with grandchildren set to come up through the ranks, he hopes Lynfords will pass through the hands of many generations of family to come.

Single on Valentine's Day?

The Harbour Master’s

diary

Don't fret, it's time to celebrate says Duck Soup founder

Andrew Board Valentine’s Day is a day for loved-up couples but singles are also celebrating the day says the founder of singles meeting group Duck Soup. Duck Soup was started in 2008 by Adrienne Ford as a way to meet new friends after she became newly single. From the very first night the group attracted a huge response and she says five years on more than a thousand people have attended one of its monthly meetings. "People say Nelson is cliquey so I thought I’d start my own clique," she says. She says Valentine’s Day isn’t a time to feel down if you are single, but to celebrate it. “You see all the advertising, hearts, flowers and chocolates and say that was me once, I’d like that back. But what I remind people in their single-ness, is to celebrate being single too because there’s a lot of people in relationships walking around that will have a really, really crap Valentine’s Day. I’m celebrating being single because it’s better than being in a bad relationship.” Adrienne says she has seen a lot of relationships form at Duck Soup and has even been to a few weddings of people who met there but doesn’t measure that as the success of the group as a fair chunk of the attendees aren’t looking

Duck Soup founder Adrienne Ford. Photo: Andrew Board. for a relationship. “You’re not going to meet Mr Right or Ms Perfect here. Don’t expect to meet your soul mate, use this as your training group to practice talking to strangers and revealing a bit about yourself.” She says after starting Duck Soup to make some new friends for herself she’s seen the group evolve and grow and says the motivation for those that come

along – at least 60 people each month – varies. “If you are shopping for a partner then that’s a great place to go, if you are new to town and looking for a new group of friends then it’s a great place to go, if you are newly single and wanting to change your social life then it’s a great place to go.” Like online dating websites, Adrienne says Duck Soup sees peaks in the number of people coming along at certain times of the year, the biggest being at the start of the new year and around Valentine’s Day. But she insists Duck Soup is not a meat market. “I talk about it like a workout for your social life. If you’re going to run a marathon you need to be in the gym training, same thing. If you want to meet new people you have to train for that and Duck Soup is a great training ground. Practice asking questions without sounding shifty, practice answering questions without giving too much information about your past history, practice having small talk with people. That’s when you’ll find, in your everyday life outside of Duck Soup, that you’ll be introduced to someone or meet someone and you will be ready.” The next Duck Soup is on March 3 at 623 in the City, for more information visit www.ducksoup.co.nz or call Adrienne on 544 2088.

• Last week shipping saw the arrival or departure of a log ship, four large container vessels, six large fishing vessels, and a tanker. • Some swing moorings were inspected by the Harbour Master staff and several were found to have deteriorating mooring lines or heavy mussel build up on their lines which can make them hazardous. As per your resource consent the moorings are kept to a high standard. • The paddle boarding boom continues and is great to see. I must admit to being over in the National Park on a rare day off and was stunned to see some fool on a paddleboard over a mile from shore, in poor visibility, (he was within 100m before we saw him and we couldn’t see the shore) no life jacket apparent. It is understood that if a paddleboard is being used in the surf it is being used as a surf board – no lifejacket necessary but flotation recommended. If it is outside the surf-line eg on the way to Haul Ashore Island it is being used as a craft less than 6m in length and a pfd is compulsory as per the current by-laws. Be warned as a $200 fine would spoil my paddle for the sake of an $80 pfd. • The Flying Fifteen regatta was held last weekend and those guys had an exciting day of it on Monday in 2m seas. There were other regattas held in various parts of the port and it is appreciated how well all the codes worked together to ensure all were safe. If in doubt, don’t go out

Falcons import finds opportunities in Nelson Phillip Rollo

At a time when dozens of young footballers are descending on the capital, Wellington’s Taylor Hall-Jones decided to take the opposite route and ply his trade in Nelson. A regular in either the middle of the park or at right back, the 19 year old New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Falcons player has not only found a new direction in Nelson, but a supportive club that has helped him find a place to stay and sponsors that have helped him find a job. “I just wanted to get out of Wellington really; it’s something different and I though it’d be nice down here in summer,” he says. “The thing for me in Wellington is that it’s just going to be the same every year basically just playing for my club so I wanted to come down here.” Taylor, who grew up in a rugby-loving family, has been working on a recycling truck around the district, courtesy of team sponsor Nelmac. “They told me it’s rubbish so I might not want to do it. But I thought I’d give it a fair whack. But that’s one of the things that people said before I moved, that they’d be happy to help out. The club is run so well with a lot of volunteers doing a lot of work.” A central league regular, Taylor has been playing at a level above or equal

to the Mainland Premier League since he was just 14 years old. He represents Lower Hutt City AFC and has gone on to win two national under-19 championships with its youth side. Since he was a boy, he has been team-mates with Louis Fenton – a starter for the Wellington Phoenix. “Me and Louis are good mates. We went on a football trip to America together when we were about 16, we roomed together. It’s cool [to see him playing for the Phoenix]. There are four boys from Lower Hutt who are in the Phoenix youth academy too.” While Taylor says he might have missed his opportunity to push on to professional football, he remains hopeful that he can make the transition through to the ASB Premiership sometime during the next two seasons. “I don’t have a preference where, I just want to be playing. If there was a senior team here then that’d be cool, but if not, well that’s just life.” Taylor says the heat was the biggest change since making the move south from Wellington but he was enjoying his time with the Falcons and the number of supporters that come along to each home match. “That was the big difference – people actually come watch here and get behind the team. In Wellington not many people get behind the youth team but here everyone makes a big deal out of it.”

Why not try something new in 2013? Waimea College Community Education is offering a wide range of interesting, educational, fun and affordable courses. Nelson drops Blair Cup

ToUch: The Tasman Secondary Schools Touch Championships are being played at the Tahunanui Playing Fields this Sunday, February 17 from 10am. Teams from schools from around the region will compete for qualifying spots at the Zone 5 finals on March 23-24 in Christchurch. mUlTiSporT: Nelson doctor Sophie Hart has won the Speight’s Coast to Coast for a second time, holding off last year’s champion and fellow Nelsonian Elina Ussher by more than 30 minutes. In the men’s race defending champion Richard Ussher was beaten to the finish line by just 6 minutes by Wanaka’s Braden Currie. Nelson’s Trevor Voyce finished fifth. FooTbAll: Reduced to ten men after just ten minutes, the NZ King Salmon Nelson Falcons couldn't hold on to an early lead thanks to a Sam Maxwell goal, eventually losing to champions Canterbury United 2-1 away on Sunday. The loss has all-but killed off any hopes Nelson had of winning the league in just its first season. This weekend the Falcons will travel to Palmerston North to play Youngheart Manawatu.

Nelson lost the Blair Cup to arch-rivals Marlborough despite home-court advantage over the weekend. The annual Blair Cup fixture – for 18 under representative players – took place at Tasman Tennis Club in Richmond on Sunday with the visitors just too strong, winning the fixture and reclaiming the cup, 11-5. Doubles took place first up with the top boy’s combination of Henry Neas and Elliot Le Petit having a tight tussle with Andrew Forgesson and Charlie Mercer but took out the match in the super tiebreak third set. The second combination of Ben Petley and Ben Hazlett struggled against the consistent combination of Lee Harborne and Mitchell Smith being

They fought back playing aggressive top tennis and won the second set 6-3. The match tie-break third set Nelson had a narrow lead and a match point at 9-8, however a couple of unforced errors on the final few points gave Marlborough the match 11-9 in the tie-break. The Golden Bay pairing of Francess Clark and Amy Hurst put up a great fight in the second set but lost their match 0-6, 6-7. Nelson fall just short in Nike Cup The FC Nelson Nike Cup side was just moments away from its second penalty shootout in as many matches before Cashmere Technical scored to seal the extra-time final victory 2-1, and pinching the rights to face the top junior North Island side with the hope of eventually making the world final. The Christchurch leg of the Manchester United Nike Cup featured two Nelson sides, FC Nelson and Richmond Athletic, after both teams qualified ahead of Nelson Suburbs. The two Nelson sides met in the semi-finals with FC Nelson eventually winning 5-3 on penalties. FC Nelson were down 1-0 at halftime in the fi-

nal game, having had just 50 minutes to recover from the gruelling semi-final, before key player Van Roland Hlawnceu struck for the visitors. But with the clock counting down and extra time came along, the FC Nelson defence was undone. Coach Francis Miccio says the young side has gained a lot of experience from the tournament, although they were disappointed to lose in such a heartbreaking manner. “Yeah it’s pretty gutwrenching but as I said to them, they can hold their heads high because they did themselves, the team and the club proud,” says Francis. “We had a rough draw and we had to back up an hour later after a really tough semi-final.”

Athletics meet doubles as national championship Nelson sports enthusiasts are in for a first this Saturday – the first New Zealand championship staged at the Saxton Field Athletics Track. The Athletics New Zealand Men’s and Women’s Junior 3,000 Metres Championships will be held as a climax to the second annual Harold Nelson Classic. Some of the top junior runners, under 20 years of age in the country will contest the seven and a half laps on the fast Mondo surface and in the cooler evening climate. The women’s event starts at 7.20pm, followed by the men’s race at 7.40pm. The women’s contenders for the title include Audrey Gregan of Auckland, Olivia Ritchie of Hamilton, and Nelson’s Jess Martin. The men’s race pits 2011 New Zealand M16 cross country champion Mike Lowe of Nelson against 2012 New Zealand M16 cross country champion Jacob Priddy of Hamilton. Rapidly improving Jeff Lautenslager of Nelson also could make a bid for the title. Mike and Jeff ’s teammates’ Thomas Andersen, Josh Barry, Allister Meffan, Sam Mackay-Wright, and Hugo Lawrence also

will be in the hunt for medals and personal bests. Preceding the championship races will be some strong performers in the Harold Nelson Classic. Two-time New Zealand 400m champion Alex Jordan is waiting for a doctor’s clearance to compete. Alex was admitted to the hospital the morning after an intense 4 x 330m relay leg in Christchurch. He suffered from kidney problems and was sent back to Nelson with the instruction of the doctor of not to run so hard. Other top Nelson competitors include men’s sprinters Andrew Kennedy and Jonas Kale, women sprinters Claire Erasmus and Amanda Fitisemanu, jumpers Chris Brake and Stefanie Aeschilmann, and throwers Dale Pritchard and Courtney Clarke The Harold Nelson Classic starts at 5pm. The entry fee for competitors is $3 and they can sign up at the gate. Admission for spectators is free, and donations to the National Academy of Distance Running Charitable Trust are welcomed. For meet queries, contact the National Academy of Distance Running office at 923-2321.

Bikers learn basics on kart track

Subsidised motorcycle safety courses are being held in Redwood Valley as a push to reduce the number of accidents on Nelson roads. Tasman District Council’s road safety coordinator Krista Hobday says there is a high number of motorbike crashes in the Top of the South and the courses are one way that riders can refresh their skills and learn more key safety tips. “We are doing everything from scooter riders to Harley Davidson bikes. If you’re on a scooter you only need a theory car licence, which is a bit scary. So this is just to do some basic skills like cornering, braking and that type of thing,” she says.

“But there is also hazard avoidance, where to ride on the road, it’s basic stuff.” Krista says the number of motorcycle crashes is not growing. However, it does remain at a worryingly high number. “You’re vulnerable on a motorbike, just like you are on a push bike, so if you’re going to have a crash, it’s going to hurt a lot more than if you’re in a car.” The next course will be held on March 2 and there will be five more scheduled for the next few months. The courses are being subsidised by TDC and the New Zealand Transport Agency. For further information, visit www.ridetolive.co.nz.

Comeback sees Tigers finish third The Nelson Tigers have clawed back into third place at the ENZED Superstock Teams Champs after a second round loss saw the side fall out of title contention. But team manager Daryl Peterson believes the second night performance, which saw the Tigers go unbeaten highlighted by a thirdfourth playoff win against tier one Baypark Busters, shows that on its day, the Tigers can beat anyone. And it is that confidence that the team will need come March when the Tigers head to Auckland for the second major teams race of the year – the Super Stock Teams Nationals. “There were other teams out there that won races but didn’t qualify. That’s just how racing works. The first night just wasn’t good as it should’ve been,” he says. “Auckland will be run differently because of the format and the fact there will only be eight teams and not 13. But we can take some good positive stuff. On the second night we were as good as any team.”

Daryl says the team is unlikely to change before Auckland, although he was yet to confirm plans with the drivers. “Most of the cars are still going. But I need to see what their plans are. I’m hoping to take the same team though.” Palmerston North will again be favourites after showing its superstock racing dominance with the Panthers claiming yet another title, beating the Manawatu Mustangs in the final on the home track. “They’ve got the numbers there and with the young fellas coming through they will be strong for many years to come. We can beat them; we just have to do it on the day.” Daryl says Blair Cunningham was the team’s top performer on the weekend, while Dale Ewers was back to his vintage best. “All of the boys drove well but Blair was exceptional. He’s going really well this year. With Jared [Gray] and Blair doing their job, it makes it very easy for the others.”

Local trials rider Paul Dowell makes his way over some rocks ahead of this weekend's NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial near Wakefield.

Top trials event back at 88 Valley The highly successful two-day NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial kicks off in Wakefield this Saturday, attracting some of the top moto-trials riders from around the country. The Adventure Trial caters for riders of all abilities, riding both modern and classic bikes, following a trail/trial format which tests their skills while having fun with a group of like-minded participants. Magazines in England, Japan and Europe have profiled this event highlighting some of what Nelson and Tasman have to offer, says organiser Stephen Oliver. “Riders attend to enjoy some of our beautiful scenery and take part in one of the friendliest motorcycle events available.” The inaugural NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial, which

is run by the Oliver family of Nelson’s own NonStop Adventure NZ Ltd, was staged in 2010 and it is held annually during the third weekend of February. The Oliver brothers are well known for their Goldpine Team Xtreme display riding at local A&P shows, the trolley derby and the Nelson Santa Parade and the Ihatove is supported by Tasman District Council. Stephen says best spectator viewing will be between 12.30-2.30pm on Saturday and Sunday. The event will be signposted from Wakefield’s Eighty Eight Valley turn off and as this event is held on private property there are no pets allowed and no food or drink sales available. From $ Holly Mace of Nelson College for Girls and Luke Brown of Henley School were two of the top local performers at the Marlborough Junior Open earlier this month. Holly, 13, lost her opening game and then went through the next three minor championship matches undefeated to win the consolation cup. Her final day consisted of two marathon matches both featuring 10-8 sets. Luke, 9, knocked out the tournament’s second seed to qualify through to the semi-finals and was the only unseeded player to get that far. Both Luke and Holly agreed that their results have made them hungrier for further success outside of the region and credited their coach Kolie van Zyl. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
