Derek, one of three Athletics Nelson representatives to be involved in formal discussions with Nelson City Council, says the ideal solution would be a compromise of two or three days either side of the matches on February 16, February 19 and March 5, and use of the timing room for “one or two significant meets”. “That would enable a lot of athletics to still continue, the kids stuff right through to the senior Twilight Series meets and some of the bigger meets as well,” he says. “Track and field athletes definitely need access to the facilities there.”

It’s still unclear what the athletics track will be used for during the Cricket World Cup, although, during the Black Caps versus West Indies One Day International, the inside was used as a children’s entertainment area and the surrounds were used by food vendors.

The exclusivity period would have huge disruptions for the senior athletes, who would be training for the New Zealand Track and Field Championship, including Commonwealth Games 1500m finalist Julian Matthews who returned home to train in the lead up to the event in summer.

And Derek says there was some confusion from the two

major junior clubs – Richmond Athletics and Athletics Nelson – as to how they would work out a membership fee when the second half of the season might not even happen.

A representative from Cricket World Cup is due in Nelson before the end of the month, but Derek was unsure whether Athletics Nelson will be involved in discussions with him. “We need to talk to council about that, whether we are involved in those discussions directly, but I’m not sure.

We’ve certainly offered to help and have made submissions to council, which is part of what they’ll be presenting to Cricket World Cup.”

Police seeking help with Brook robbery

Nelson Police investigating a robbery at the Brook St Store last week have several leads, including a photo of a man who may be connected.

At about 7.15pm last Thursday night, a male wearing a balaclava entered the Brook St Store. He demanded that the store assistant open the cash drawer and threatened to harm her if she did not cooperate.

They’re the pride of Nelson, and now a group of locals will head to the national Pride of New Zealand Awards in Auckland after winning their regional categories in Christchurch last week.

Kyle says he’s looking forward to the national awards in Auckland next month. “Both Phil and I are really looking forward to it. We never expected to win anything, so are just enjoying it.”

Tahuna’s community centre expands Nelson City Council has paved the way for the Tahunanui Community Centre to expand.

The centre currently occupies a building on Burrell Park, off Muritai St, but is crammed in with a preschool and has been needing more space for some time. Last week, the council’s community services committee came to their aid, recommending that the council lease and then buy a

building on Burrell Park which is owned by the Nelson Pacific Island Afternoon Study Programme.

The recommendation is to make the building available to the Tahunanui Community Centre. NPIASP have owned the building since 2003 and lease the land it stands on from the council. Following the recent death of Jan Fa’avae, who was the driving force behind the NPIASP, activities within

the hall have dropped off and it is currently being used for storage.

Deputy mayor Paul Matheson has brokered the deal with the groups involved and sees it as a win/win. “This allows the council to alleviate the financial stress on NPIASP at a very difficult time for the group. It will also support the important work being done by the centre.”

With two tonnes of crushed ice brought in from Sealord’s, nine riders took up the unique opportunity to get some snow action a little closer to home, and to thrill a good serving of spectators at the same time.

Jack Beattie, who wowed the crowd with a back flip early in the night, was named best skier and the overall winner, with 16 year old Phoenix Gallagher in second and named best snowboarder.

Jeff Stein, a 21 year old snowboarder from Canada was third overall, with Jerusha Tucker taking home the award for best girl.

The event was sponsored by Hogey’s Surf, Speights Summit and Placemakers, and was free for the first time, resulting in a much larger crowd.

Arts fest turns 20 Nelson’s Arts Festival will celebrate 20 years this October, with 85 events over 12 glorious days.

The programme for the festival was officially launched on Friday night, with tickets now on sale.

The festival will run between October 16-27 and feature 85 events, from the popular masked parade to theatre, dance, music and comedy.

Among the highlights is a readers and writers session with Man Booker Award winner Eleanor Catton.

Nelson City councillor Gaile Noonan says the council is very proud to present the country’s longest running regional arts festival. “The festival started as a small collection of events to support the World of Wearable Arts.

Today, it is a sophisticated

12-day celebration, hosting up to 140 visiting artists and performers, and attracting 12,500 people to ticketed events.”

$10,000 to go to charity Nelson groups and charities have just ten days to get their application in for a chance to get $10,000.

The Car Company Charity Drive will give $10,000 away and, unlike last year,

Mission to feed for less recognised a gap in Tahuna for families to buy produce. With no supermarkets or places to buy vegetables he started a stall that ran once a week. It soon proved so popular the church decided to run it five days a week and they’ve been doing that for almost two years now.

Matt says they do mark up their prices but only enough to cover costs and to pay him a small wage. All of the helpers are volunteers, as is most of Matt’s time.

A tiny fruit and vegetable stall on Tahuna Drive is having a big impact, selling healthy food for bargain prices, often below the price they paid for it.

The stall is run by the St Stephen’s Church and operates from the church’s front yard.

It’s been running for almost two years and its coordinator, Matt Gray, says it’s all about providing cheap, healthy options for Tahuna families.

“This is the church’s gift to the community. It’s about getting good food at an affordable price in the community. That’s why we do it.”

The idea started when Matt

He says they do it for those families in Tahuna, but the stall has also become popular with people driving home from work, and Matt says that’s a side benefit. “We’re a Tahuna church so we’re here for our community first and foremost, but if others get to get some cheap veges as well then, why not? The more sold the better.”

He says it hasn’t been easy with poor weather and some slow weeks making life tough, but watching families walk out with bags full of fresh and nutritious food makes it worthwhile.

Stellar first year for boxing club It’s been a heck of a year for the Victory Boxing Gym, but it’s warning that for it to be sustainable it now needs to start attracting sponsorship.

One year after moving into its building on Vanguard St, the gym has doubled in numbers – and then doubled again. Each week hundreds of kids and teenagers head to the gym for a workout and new programmes have been included for high school students, sports teams, work groups and adult classes.

The work the gym does has also attracted plenty of praise from parents, police and other community groups. But now the challenge will be to keep it afloat.

The gym’s chairman Scott Gibbons says it has made fantastic progress, but not able to host a Fight 4 Victory fundraising event this year has dented the club’s financial coffers and they need some attention.

at the moment, we need some security long term, we need corporate support, we need charitable trust funding support and we need a [Fight 4 Victory] event,” he says.

“Really, we have to be able to implement all three.”

The team behind the gym have recently finished a five year business plan to make sure it will be sustainable and it’s just received charitable status, which means it will be able to start applying for funding.

Scott says it’s extremely important that the club is able to attract funding, for the benefit of the community.

“Otherwise these organisations fall over and it would be a travesty for that to happen. Where would all these kids go if the gym wasn’t here?”

Along with Scott, Barry Galbraith and Paul Hampton have

been other key figures in the success of the gym to date. Paul runs most of the sessions and says watching the gym grow over the past year has been quite moving.

“It’s a very different program to what we started with. It reaches a lot more of the community than I ever thought it would.”

Paul says the positive impact on kids is the main motivator for him and his team of volunteers. “That’s what drives us.

A lot of it isn’t fairy-tale stuff, there are some hard stories out there and some kids are really doing it tough. But our proudest moments are when a parent will come in and they’ve just had really tough times with their kids and Victory boxing is the place they feel good about.”

Scott says it’s a long road ahead for the gym. “We’ve been so busy trying to run the programme, but now we need to start going out to the community and asking for support so this thing can be sustainable.”

Age Concern: We need to protect our elderly Nelson-Tasman has one of the fastest-growing elderly populations in the country, and that means agencies like Age Concern have never been busier.

The four-strong team at Age Concern covers the whole Nelson and Tasman region and operates on a budget stitched together from government contracts, community fundraisers and grants from community trusts. For that, it delivers various educational seminars as well as its popular visitor service and elder-abuse prevention.

Manager Sue Tilby says money is always a problem, so they’ve applied to win the Car Company $10,000 Charity Drive. “The older population is growing rapidly and in Nelson and Tasman it’s at a much higher rate [than nationally].”

Age Concern has 80 volunteers that work on its accredited visitor service, where they visit lonely and isolated older people in the community.

But the rapid rise of elder abuse means Age Concern is battling to keep the community educated on a tight budget.

Mike gets another boost Mike Corkill and his kids campaign for “dad’s new lungs” got another boost last week, when the Probus Club of Richmond donated $1000 to the cause.

The money was profit from a very successful Nostalgia Concert event held recently.

The club also donated $500 to the Nelson Tasman Hospice.

You may be aware that the Government has introduced the Land Transport Amendment Bill to lower the adult driver breath alcohol limit.

This Bill creates a new offence for drivers with a breath alcohol level between 251 and 400mcg per litre of breath. The blood alcohol limit for this new offence is 50mg per 100ml of blood (0.05).

The new limit will come into effect on 1 December. From then, drivers detected with a breath alcohol level between 251-400mcg will receive a fine and 50 demerit points.

Drivers who accumulate 100 demerit points for any offences within a two year period will receive a three month driver licence suspension. For drivers detected at over 400mcg of alcohol per litre of breath the existing criminal sanctions apply.

This new law is great news for Police and the general public. Alcohol contributes to about 30 percent of fatal road crashes. International research shows that lowering the adult drinkdriving limit will make a significant impact on reducing road deaths and injury.

In New Zealand we’ve seen a cultural change around drink-driving and the vast majority of people have got the message that it’s not ok to drink and drive. Recent public surveys also indicate that the majority of people consider the current drink-driving limits to be too high.

We all have to take responsibility for the decisions we make when we drive. My two bits of advice are: if you intend to drink always organise a sober driver or a taxi to get home and; don’t ever be shy about telling a friend you don’t think they should drive.

Dogs are unpredictable and should be restrained in vehicles, doesn't matter what licence you have, it is a hazard! BATON–ARTHUR POSSUM CONTROL AERIAL 1080 APPLICATIONS Vector Free Marlborough Ltd wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the Baton-Arthur area. The operation is being carried out under contract to TBfree New Zealand for the purposes of the National Bovine Tuberculosis Pest Management Plan.

Control Area: The Baton-Arthur treatment area consists of approximately 27,500 hectares in the eastern reaches of Kahurangi National Park and some adjacent or nearby private forest and farmland blocks west of the Motueka River, extending from the lower Wangapeka River to north of the Flora Carpark, including the eastern slopes of the Mt Arthur Range.

A detailed map of the operational area can be viewed at the local Department of Conservation offices in Nelson, Motueka and Takaka between 9:00am and 4:00pm week days.

Commencement Date: The aerial application of cereal pellets containing Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) will commence on or thereafter 23 August 2014.

Bait Description: Pre-feed: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, non-dyed (brown in colour).

Toxic bait: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, dyed green with a toxic loading of 1.5g/kg Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080).

Precautions: The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. Children should be kept under strict supervision in the operational area.

Dogs should be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to, or be taken into the operational area as they are particularly susceptible to 1080 and poisoned carcasses.

The risk of poisoning for dogs from carcasses may be in excess of six months depending on weather conditions, and may extend downstream from the control area.

Wild animals should not be sold or taken for eating from within or adjacent to this area until the area is declared clear of pesticides.

Poison warning signs will be erected at all points of public access and the public are reminded that it is an offence to remove any of these signs.

It’s always tested to make sure it fits properly and anybody who purchases a seat from here gets lifetime installation free; it doesn’t cost anything, so they can call back 10 or 15 times a week, it doesn’t matter,” says Craig.

“Some customers think they are a pain coming back to get their car seats re-installed, but we say to them we’d sooner they came back because there’s nothing worse than driving around with a loose seat.” Craig says that up to 89 per cent of child restraints are still installed incorrectly, which is too high a number. “We’re brave enough to say this really isn’t fitting the car properly, and we’ll try another solution until we find the correct restraint.

We have chosen to be child restraint technicians and we renew that every two years, which means being fully up-to-date with each new seat that enters the market so we know what it can and can’t do. All the products are great but everything has a limitation, and people need to be aware about what that is. Three-peat for Richmond Rabbits

The Richmond Rabbits have gone where no other TRL side has gone before, winning their third title in a row and finishing the entire season undefeated.

The Rabbits managed to score two tries and a drop goal in the final ten minutes, to beat an emotional Tahunanui Tigers team 39-28 in the grand final at Trafalgar Park on Saturday.

Rabbits captain Hoani Takao says ti-

tle number three is a “huge” achievement for the club, who have maintained their record of winning every year they’ve been in the competition.

“It’s sort of unheard of to come through with a threepeat and to go through undefeated is huge,” he says.

“We knew that our undefeated record would have meant nothing if we had lost today, but we came through and I’m just so proud of the boys.”

But the two brothers showed up in the second half, just as the Tigers edged ahead 28-26.

Coach Lance Broomfield was “very proud” of his team. “We worked really hard to get to where we are. They were favourites to win and we just had to get them on the day, but unfortunately they were too good.”

In an incredible act of toughness, Tapu Laiseni of the Tigers horribly severed his ear in the first half and returned to the field, only going to hospital once the game had finished.

The area is approximately 20,500 hectares to the west of the Mt Arthur Range and entirely within Kahurangi National Park. The operation in this area, which encompasses the Leslie and part of the Karamea River catchments, is being carried out under contract to the Department of Conservation for biodiversity protection purposes as part of the ‘Battle For Our Birds’ programme.

Nelson College first XV are back in the Press Cup semi-finals, but this year they won’t have to combat a difficult away-trip to Christchurch.

Nelson College, who finished second on the table after the round robin matches, will instead host defending champions Marlborough Boys’ College this Saturday — the team that beat them in the final last year.

In the other semi-final, the undefeated Christchurch Boys’ High School will host Timaru Boys’ High School, Nelson College first XV centre Tima Fain- after they sneeked past St Bede’s Colgaanuku, dives over for a try in Thursday’s lege to seal the final playoff spot.

Veteran cyclist Chris Nicholson may have secured the King of the Hill title on Saturday but he couldn't quite match Jason Thomsen for consistency over three months of racing in the Tasman Wheelers Plus4 Insurance winter road cycling series.

Chris was first to the finish on top of the Aniseed Valley Hill in Saturday's final race but had to settle for second in the series, 11 points behind Jason who won six of the 11 races. The B grade competition was just as close with Henry Kersten winning Saturday's race to edge out Brent Sturm in the series by just nine points.

However, the Sturm family did secure C grade honours with Brent's son, Jacob, winning four of the 11 races to finish on 101 points well clear of second-placed Ken Banner on 73. It was a top result for 13-year-old Jacob who is in his first season of racing with the Tasman Wheelers.

The series was also a family affair for the Fultons with Karen recording three thirds racing in B grade to win the women's series on 110 points, 11 ahead of Ann Rigg. Karen's daughter Shaane was fourth in the women's competition just ahead of her grandmother Christine van Hoppe who finished sixth.

Karen's husband Dean was fifth in A grade while her father Karl van Hoppe was ninth in D grade. Robert Ross won D grade and Willem Stein won E grade.

The series attracted almost 200 riders with between 70 and 90 racing on a weekly basis.

Jacks and Richmond battle to a stalemate Richmond Sleepers and Jacks Silver had an intense encounter in their Grade 3 game. Contrary to their name, Sleepers hit the ground running courtesy of some nice long range shooting by Tash Martin. Both teams were forced into offensive turnovers early with Jenna French at centre and Shara Higgins at WD for Richmond spoiling numerous attacking moves by Jacks.

Abbie Murrell was strong on the rebound and quick to outlet the long pass.

Richmond were 9-6 up, and took their foot off the pedal ever so slightly. Jacks pounced, picking

up the speed of the game on attack. Circle defenders, Katie Lay and Joanna Clapcott, gave Jacks their extra scoring opportunities with five turnovers, which were converted with an excellent shooting display by Louise Wealleans and Maree Claridge.

Richmond were one in arrears at the major break and made a defensive change, with Abbie moving to goal keep and Hannah McCullock moving out to goal defence, which immediately paid dividends. tackers. Annie Ewers-Kennedy at wing attack had a huge work rate, both off the line and through court, linking nicely with her offensive line.

The third quarter belonged to Richmond with their diminutive goal attack Kath McCauley to the fore, driving to space well for free shots on goal.

provide drive through court. Katie topped the list, having a high work rate for the entire match and putting up great numbers on the stat sheet, to finish the game with four intercepts, six rebounds and three tips.

Kath was a standout for Richmond, scoring 19 of her teams 26 goals, along with Jenna at centre who provided plenty of pressure defence and timely attacking play.

The final score was 26 all, which was a good indication of a wellfought match.
