5000 Aussies coming to Nelson for cup Andrew Board Be prepared for an Aussie invasion. That’s the advice of Australian businessman Matthew Needham who says as many as 5000 Australian rugby fans are on route to the region and they will treat the city as a place to unwind before the business end of the Rugby World Cup begins. Australia plays Russia in its final pool game at Trafalgar Park on October 1. The match was originally scheduled for Christchurch, but was moved to Nelson after the February earthquake. Matthew, director of Australia House Events – a company that specializes in giving Australian sports fans a home-away-from-home
base during major sporting events by providing a base with big screen tv’s, free internet access, discounts on apparel and free sim cards – says while Nelson was barely on the radar of Wallaby fans before the game was moved, it is now firmly in their sights. “A survey we did showed that a quarter of all Australians coming to New Zealand for the world cup are planning on coming to Nelson. That is a huge number and made us think pretty hard about setting up an Australia House down here as well.” Matthew was in town over the weekend looking at site options after already setting up a base in both Auckland and
