5000 Aussies coming to Nelson for cup Andrew Board Be prepared for an Aussie invasion. That’s the advice of Australian businessman Matthew Needham who says as many as 5000 Australian rugby fans are on route to the region and they will treat the city as a place to unwind before the business end of the Rugby World Cup begins. Australia plays Russia in its final pool game at Trafalgar Park on October 1. The match was originally scheduled for Christchurch, but was moved to Nelson after the February earthquake. Matthew, director of Australia House Events – a company that specializes in giving Australian sports fans a home-away-from-home
base during major sporting events by providing a base with big screen tv’s, free internet access, discounts on apparel and free sim cards – says while Nelson was barely on the radar of Wallaby fans before the game was moved, it is now firmly in their sights. “A survey we did showed that a quarter of all Australians coming to New Zealand for the world cup are planning on coming to Nelson. That is a huge number and made us think pretty hard about setting up an Australia House down here as well.” Matthew was in town over the weekend looking at site options after already setting up a base in both Auckland and

NCC’s sunny idea goes national While Nelson has no plans to export the main ingredient to its solar scheme, it says it is more than happy to see other councils pick up on its idea to utilise the sun. ‘The Solar Promise’ nationwide campaign was launched yesterday by Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio and deputy

“They save money, it’s a much better use of energy and much better for the environment.”
“I definitely think it’s a good idea. You obviously save a lot of power. Especially in Nelson, it’d be silly not to.”
“I think every new house should have them in Nelson. If I was building I certainly would get one. It’s the sunshine state of the country.”
“I’m passionate for solar panels, it makes you appreciate the sunny days more.”
NEWS IN BRIEF • The solution to ease Nelson’s transport issues is close to public release. An 18-month process to find the answer to cross-city travel between Tasman and Nelson will be released on July 20. An arterial traffic study, commencing in December 2009, has filed down to two options - a new southern link road through Victory or part-time clearways on Waimea and Rocks roads. The study assessed social, cultural, and economic impacts of the new roads. The answer has been delayed several times since the proposed November deadline as the council has waited for sign off from the New Zealand Transport Agency. • Last week we ran a photo of a stolen Mitsubishi Gallant. Police say they are no longer looking for the vehicle after it was found in Enner Glynn. The car was involved in a single car crash and two Nelson men aged 28 and 22 have been arrested in relation to the stolen vehicle. Stolen property was also found in the car and police believe the vehicle and offenders have been involved in some recent burglaries in the region.

5000 Aussies coming to Nelson for cup FROM PAGE 1 Wellington. “We anticipate people will come to Nelson to watch the Russia game and take a week off to sightsee before heading back up to Wellington for our quarter final the following Saturday night,” says Matthew. That could be a huge boost for the region with thousands of fans looking to unwind and spend time away from the big cities before the playoffs. Matthew says the majority of fans that will travel here will have money to spend. “Again, our research shows that the average fan is a middle-aged man who earns good money. Many will come with their partners, so wineries, shows, charter trips and sightseeing tours should do well around here. “I think they will use Nelson as the gateway to the South Island because many will be keen
to visit other parts of the island and we are encouraging people to spend some time in Christchurch to help boost their tourism.” Matthew expects the number of Australian fans booking their tickets in the next few months will be huge. “There has been a perception in Australia that it will be a very expensive tournament but that is rubbish. Tickets are dirt cheap and accommodation is very reasonable and flights from the major Australian cities to New Zealand are very cheap. I think we will see a lot of people pop over for a week or two and catch two or three Wallaby games.” Mayor Aldo Miccio met with Matthew while he was in town and says he is excited at the prospect of so many fans filling our streets. “It’s fantastic news and gives Nelson a great opportunity to put our best foot forward and prove that we are great hosts.”
Stormy weather predicted today More severe west or northwest gales of 65 km/h gusting 120km/h is expected today around Nelson from midmorning. According to Nelson Tasman Civil Defence spokesman Chris Choat, the winds will be felt most west of Motueka and predicted to be at their peak around the Takaka Hill. The winds, generated by a front moving across the country, will be relatively short lived, easing by late afternoon. But we won’t be getting the worst of it. The central North Island is expecting wind, rain and snow.

Our sunny ideas picked up by rest of NZ FROM PAGE 1 drive down the cost of solar power installation. Yesterday at a local government conference in Wellington, nine mayors committed to the promise and have urged other councils to join them. Aldo Miccio says that a 2008 feasibility study carried out in partnership with the Energy Efficiency Conservation Authority (EECA) and SolarCity, showed the government’s solar grant alone was not enough to help communities go solar. “The study was clear: families want the immediate cash benefits from solar’s savings, but they need to spread the cost of solar for it to be affordable,” says Aldo. Aldo and Ali, along with SolarCity’s Andrew

Booth and Nelson Environment Centre’s Grant Jones say the more council’s that sign up will mean more pressure on the government to help with the cost of installing solar panels. “The Solar Saver Scheme has been a huge success for Nelson,” says Aldo. “In the scheme’s first year Nelson families put more solar systems on their rooves than the whole of Auckland City, immediately getting up to one week’s free power every month.” Solar Promise co-founder Grant says the NEC is committed to help build a more resilient community and economy for future generations. “This includes more secure, clean and affordable sources of energy. The Solar Promise is an important step towards achieving this.”

Anna Burns is well known for her long blonde hair. But the professional singer and performer will have a new look in the coming weeks - as she prepares to donate the majority of it to Freedom Wigs. Anna is a popular choice for theatre performances, especially when they are on the look out for someone with long blonde hair. But after seeing her nephew shave his hair for cancer, Anna was inspired to finally cut loose of her blonde locks. “It’s definitely time,” says Anna. However, because her hair is coloured, it will be used for repair jobs for the Dunedin based toupee company. Freedom Wigs is a company that specifically looks after those with long term extensive hair loss, mostly those with Alopecia Areata, Totalis and Universalis. Freedom makes a medical prosthesis that is specifically designed for those with these extreme hair loss conditions. Anna says its a great cause to donate to chemotherapy patients and other sufferers of hair loss. Untouchables will be donating the use of their services for the cause. Anna hopes that others will be inspired to donate their LOST LOCKS: Enner Glynn’s Anna Burns will cut off her long blonde hair and donate it to Freedom Wigs. Photo: Phillip Rollo. hair.

Winter Music Festival swings into action The Nelson Winter Music Festival has kicked off with a bang. With performances beginning on the weekend, concert goers were treated with two of the soldout headlining performers in Jennifer WardLealand and the hilarious Boomers Behaving Badly. “We’ve had full houses so it’s been pretty fantastic,” says Nelson School of Music manager Frances McElhin-
ney. “The focus is put on a cabaret environment or a club environment. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere. It feels very warm and inviting on a winter evening.” Made In NSOM takes to the stage this Wednesday. This annual concert showcases the talented Nelson School of Music students who have achieved scholarships on a range of instruments taught at the School
and in singing, speech and drama. Tickets for Made In NSOM and other performances can be purchased at the Nelson School of Music. The ticket sales for the remaining shows have been snapped up quickly with strong showings already. “The girls downstairs have been very busy today selling tickets. Once it starts, everyone starts realising they better hurry up.”

Local man builds company from his chair up Jimmy Jeffery is a busy man. By day he is the owner and manager of Nelson Bays Cabs, one of the three largest taxi companies in the region (“and the cheapest”) and by night he works as a driver for the company, picking up customers all over Nelson until the early hours of the morning. On his days off, Jimmy likes to race his off-road buggy, hunt pigs and dream of getting back on a motorbike. But what makes Jimmy’s story remarkable is that he does it all from a wheelchair. When he was a teenager Jimmy damaged his back riding a motorbike, his doctor told him he had weakened his back and another serious injury could leave him paralyzed. A few years later he was the passenger of a car that crashed, breaking his back and leaving him a paraplegic. Jimmy, who now lives in Stoke, says it was a tough time. “I was definitely gutted, I didn’t really believe it, I thought ‘nah, it’ll come right,’ as you do when you’re young.” After several years of recovery, which included spending his 21st birthday in Burwood Hospital, Jimmy was encouraged by ACC to get back into the workforce. The jobs they suggested involved sitting in an office, something Jimmy was keen to avoid. “I’m an outdoors man, always have been, the idea of sitting in an office all day didn’t sit well so I started to try and find something else.”
He asked if he could be a taxi driver to which he was told he could try but there was no other paraplegic taxi driver in the country and it was unlikely he would gain the necessary medical certificate. But he did in a canter. Jimmy then got to work for a mate who owned a shuttle business. When his mate wanted to start a taxi company Jimmy bought half of the fleet he needed to get it off the ground. Four months later he bought the other half and has spent the past five years building it into an extremely successful business. “When I took it over five years ago there was no work, I used to get excited when the phone rang, now it goes all the time. On a Saturday night we have ten taxis going and there is no way we can do all the work.” He says not many of his customers comment on his wheelchair, attached to the roof of his van, because he works at night and most of his clients are “half-pissed”. Jimmy’s next big goal is to build himself a two-wheeled motorbike he can ride. “Not being able to ride my motorbikes is the toughest thing about being in a chair, but I’ve been looking on YouTube and there is a guy who is in a chair and rides a two-wheeler. He is amazing and I definitely want to get back on a two wheeler. Before the accident I was a gib-stopper and I rode bikes. That was my life.”
IN THE HOT SEAT: Nelson Bays Cabs owner Jimmy Jeffery has grown his taxi business while keeping busy hunting pigs, and driving his off-road doom buggy. And he has done it all despite not having the use of his legs. Photo: Andrew Board.

Nelson to Chatham Islands trip ‘historic’ Nelsonians will have a rare opportunity to fly direct to the Chatham Islands on a historic Convair 580 airplane. Robyn Neil, of Travel Smart, says the unique opportunity arose to send a group from Nelson to the Chatham Islands and she was keen to offer it to locals. “It’s such an amazing place, such diversity; it is definitely one of those places that everyone
should travel to at least once in their lives.” Robyn says it is the first time to her knowledge that a commercial flight has flown direct from Nelson to the Chathams. “This doesn’t come around all the time. It’s a great opportunity to see an incredible part of New Zealand and its easy, no passport, no connecting flights.” For more information call Robyn on 546 9229.

Hunters help keep airplanes safe Hunters are being called in to help control the number of black swans living in the flight path of planes coming into and out of Nelson airport. A hunt last weekend killed 56 birds after various groups reported a significant increase in the numbers of swans in the region. The swans pose a “very real risk” to planes coming into the region, says Nelson Fish & Game ranger Lawson Davey. Fish & Game, who are tasked with controlling the numbers of game
birds in this region, and used 30 local game bird hunters to reduce the number of black swan and consequently the risk to aviation. The reason for the rise in swan numbers in this area remains unclear although an increase in estuarine eel grass in the Nelson Haven may have contributed. Fish & Game staff say they are pleased to have been able to harness the skills of local game bird hunters to reduce the black swan population in this high risk area.

Round Table completes round trip
Driving around the South Island in a multi-coloured car, bought for less than $500, caught a bit of attention says Wayne O’Neill from the Tasman Round Table. And that’s just what they were after. The Round Table, a men’s service group for people aged 18 to 45, has founded a new event based on the Undie 500. Next May the group is encouraging its members around the country and anyone keen from Nelson, to do a Bluff to Cape Rianga drive Round Table members in their $500 car that travelled around the South Island. Councillors take aim at ‘flawed’ report Two key Tasman District Councillors have slammed the accuracy of a report from which the Local Government Commission has based its findings for amalgamation – with one figure out by $80million. Richmond councillor Judene Edgar and deputy mayor Tim King say the research that the commissions decision was based on was “flawed” and they should rethink their decision. The Local Government Commission released a draft proposal for a reorganisation of Nelson City and Tasman District Councils last month recommending the two councils amalgamate and, barring a huge about face, will put the issue to ratepayers in both districts next year. But Judene and Tim say the commission has come to conclusions based on wrong data. Judene says there are “dozens of significant mistakes and many more minor errors” in the Strateg-Ease document, used by the commissioners to base its decision. One glearing error states that Tasman’s debt is on $48million when in fact it is closer to $130 million. Tim says the error-ridden report throws the whole decision by the commission into doubt. However, now that the document has been released it is taken as fact says Judene. “People take this as gospel but the errors all add together to make a totally flawed document. I’m gobsmacked they could release something so flawed.”

Rush expected for awards Organisers of the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards are expecting a last minute rush as the deadline for nominations gets closer. Nominations for the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards close this week, on Friday 15 July. So far 84 nominations have been received for the awards, which are run in conjunction with the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils to recognise and reward the work of voluntary groups and organisations. Last year organisers received 116 nominations for the awards and TrustPower community relations coordinator, Pip Tschudin, says they are hoping for a similar result this year. “There are thousands of voluntary groups operating in the Nelson Tasman region and the work they do deserves to be recognised and celebrated. “From the volunteers at the local St John station to the mums and dads who freely give their time to be part of their local sports club, volunteers play a vital role in every part of com-
munity life. This is the once-a-year chance to ensure these community superstars get the recognition they deserve,” says Pip. Anyone can nominate a voluntary group or organisation for the TrustPower Nelson Tasman Community Awards – voluntary groups can even nominate themselves. The awards cover five categories; heritage and environment, health and wellbeing, arts and culture, sport and leisure, and dducational and child/youth development. There is more than $6500 up for grabs for the winners of the Awards, with the Supreme Winner representing the region at the 2011 TrustPower National Community Awards, being held in March 2012. Nomination forms for the TrustPower Community Awards can be downloaded from or completed online at www.trustpower.co.nz/communityawards. Nominations close on Friday 15 July 2011. The Awards will be announced at a ceremony on Monday 29 August.

BEST JOB: Nelmac gardeners Sam Speight, 20, and Ruth Nisbett, 19, preparing gardens around Rutherford Park ahead of the Rugby World Cup. Photo: Andrew Board.
Young gardeners take pride in our city Weeks after Robert Fryer hired Nelmac’s newest gardener straight out of school he saw him walking out of the Founders Book Fair with a pile of books under his arm – the subjects of which brought a smile to his face. “When I saw him walking out with a stack of gardening books I knew we had the right man,” he says. Sam Speight, 20, has been at Nelmac for two and a half years after he “hassled” Rob for an apprenticeship he had heard about while still studying at Nelson College. Sam’s persistence paid off and now he, along with fellow apprentice Ruth Nisbett, 19, are living their dream job. Ruth went to Nayland College and says she was looking into a career in floristry until an opportunity at Nelmac sent her down a different path. Now the pair say they have Nelson’s best jobs. “It’s awesome being able to work on the best gardens around. I always point it out to people, ‘I planted that, I did that’, even to the annoying degree,” jokes Sam. Sam says being able to see the transformation of gardens is satisfying. “You get jobs where noth-

ing has been done for a while. You look at it in the morning and it’s a dingy hobo den and when you walk out its bright and almost perfect. When you walk out it’s something to be proud of.” For Ruth the hanging baskets was a pet project and seeing them in full bloom around the city was a particular project to be proud of. “Everybody talks about the hanging baskets and it was cool to know that I did that.” Now preparations for the Rugby World Cup are keeping the duo, along with the rest of the Nelmac team, busy. Sam says being able to have a positive influence on how the city looks is one of the biggest thrills of the job. “Soon there will be all these people here from overseas and hopefully people will like what they see and what we’ve done.” Robert says Nelmac has always been keen to take on young staff members and he is thrilled with how the two recruits have settled in. “It is one of the most satisfying parts of our job, watching people come from school, when they are still a school kid if you like, and watch them grow into a valued member of staff and it’s very satisfying.”

Grand total in for Race4Jace The childhood friend of Jason Richards says his delight at raising $12,000 for his mates fight with cancer is tempered with recent news that he has taken a turn for the worse. Tony Dyer, along with Nick Fowler and Brendan Gridley, organised and ran the Race4Jace at ProKarts in Tahunanui last month. That Bathurst-style race, along with auctions and a donation tin, raised $12,109.05 for Nelson man and Australian V8 supercar driver Jason Richards, who is battling an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer. The trio say they are overwhelmed with the total figure, originally hoping to raise $5000. “It’s been amazing really, the
community really got in behind it and did their bit for Jason,” says Nick. The group announced the grand total on the Classic Hits breakfast show yesterday morning. Tony says Jason knew the event was planned and he has informed his mother of the grand total but declining health has meant he has been unable to pass that news on to Jason himself. “We are now all hoping for a miracle. This money was to help Jason fight this cancer and we hope that is what it will still be used for, we are still optimistic,” says Tony. Jason was born and raised in Nelson before hitting the big time in the Australian supercar series.

College musicians jazz it up in Monaco The Nelson Area inaugural College Jazz competition was held at the Honest Lawyer on Sunday, with five groups competing for a $1000 prize. The event was well supported by Nelson Jazz Club members, plus family and friends of the participants. The groups involved were; Blue Note, a six piece ensemble from Nelson Girls College directed by Anthony Hunt; a ten piece outfit from Waimea College directed by Martin Eno; the Nelson College for Girls Big Band directed by John Hudson; the Motueka High School Big Band also directed by John Hudson and finally the Nayland College Nine, ably coached by Tim Parker. The prize for the best performance went to the Motueka High School’s Big Band. Judge Andrew Leachman noted that the competition was a complete success. “Jazz is alive and well in the Nelson region,” he says.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Three container vessels, two large car carriers, two log ships, ten large fishing vessels arriving or shifting around the port still enabled the port staff and resources to keep up. • A container vessel at 210m long and 30m wide is certainly one of the larger challenges for the pilots as they come through the cut. It makes an impressive sight however it is almost impossible to manoeuvre this vessel out of the way of other craft. It is for this reason that the new by-laws will introduce a moving prohibited zone around larger ships as they enter or exit the port. Please ensure you give the ships the right of way. • The new marina development continues and I look forward to seeing larger vessels take advantage of the berths when complete. • I would ask all power boat owners to be considerate when approaching or departing from the launch ramp and keep their speed to 3 knots, please give way to vessels reversing out or coming out of their berths. In the event there is an incident or collision please remember it is compulsory to advise the Harbourmaster and Maritime New Zealand. • Thursday brought the tsunami warning and whist it was eventually cancelled there was considerable extra activity in tidal surges and stronger currents. Well done to anyone who changed their mind about going out. If in doubt- don’t go out Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Proctor’s career kicks on with Makos Phillip Rollo
He might be a born and bred Wellingtonian but James Proctor is finding himself at home in the recently named Tasman Makos squad. The 21 year-old first five-eight was instrumental in Wakatu Marist’s championship winning season, collecting a massive personal haul of 215 points for the green machine, before securing his first ever professional contract, with the Tasman Makos. His calmed presence on the ball, and his ability to take any point on offer, made the young pivot an obvious selection when the squad was announced last Sunday. The weekend will stay in his memory for a long time, his selection coming one day after the successful Car Company division one final. “It would be one of the more special rugby weekends I’ve had,” says James. “It’s the first time I’ve won a championship and then to back it up the next day getting named in the Makos is pretty special.” The squad was named following a 45-19 loss to the Otago Razorbacks. James got to mark former All Black Tony Brown in the 20 minutes he played for the Tasman selection. “I used to watch him on the television when I was a kid, so playing against him was pretty awesome. I got to tackle him a few times.” The former Oriental-Rongotai playmaker relocated to Nelson in January after finding his path to the
Wellington Lions blocked by a cluster of already contracted tens. James played his club rugby with Ories alongside All Black Ma’a Nonu and Hurricanes winger Julian Savea in Wellington’s premier rugby competition and hasn’t looked back since linking with good friend Johnny Gbenda-Charles at Marist. “I came down here to give the Makos a crack. I had been in Wellington the last few years and hadn’t really gone anywhere and it was time for a change. It’s a good opportunity and we’ll see what happens.” James has represented Wellington at under-19 and under-20 level and also spent a year in 2009 playing in the Heartland Championship with Horowhenua-Kapiti. But regular trips to New Zealand’s smallest corners is all in the past with Tasman set to square off against Northland in the opening round of the ITM Cup this Saturday. The first week of being a Mako included plenty of bookwork, learning all the plays and backline moves. “It’s all brain power.” James says he has already learnt a lot since his short time training with the Tasman academy and plans to soak up everything he can from assistant coach and former All Black Leon MacDonald. “Obviously, he knows what he’s talking about. I want to learn everything I can off these guys who have been here before.” Tasman’s match against Northland at Toll Stadium in Whangarei kicks off at 5:35pm.

Local athletes tear up at winter swimming meet
The Blenheim, Nelson, Motueka and Nelson South swim clubs combined resources to host a three session swim meet at the ASB Aquatic Centre over the weekend. Eighty seven swimmers from seven clubs entered, including swimmers from Christchurch club QE2 and Greymouth swim club. A number of swimmers were targeting specific races to achieve qualifying times, while for many others it was the first opportunity to swim a multi-session meet. In terms of qualifying for the Short Course Champs, the outstanding swimmer at the meet was Nelson South’s Kaiori McGuinniety who achieved four qualifying times and was an agonising 0.01 of a second outside qualifying for the 100 fly. His times including a big personal best in the 200 backstroke. Others from Nelson to achieve multiple Short Course Champs qualifying times were Ryan Cheyne, Lydia Mossman and Ellie Rukuwai. Nayland looking to net again in Aussie The Nayland College first XI might want to leave space in their hand luggage as they target the Southern Skies Football Tournament trophy for the second time in succession, in Brisbane this week. The Gagame Feni-captained side will compete in one of Australia’s premier secondary school football tournaments and has its eye on more silverware to join the trophy from 2009. Nayland will use the tournament to give younger players experience and get some much needed playing time together in the build up before the New Zealand Secondary School Football Championship on August 22 in Napier. Nayland gained a wildcard spot in to the top 16 of the New Zealand competition after losing the top regional qualifying spot to Nelson College. But unlike Nelson, Nayland do not have a regular first XI playing on the weekends, the majority of the squad, instead, play in a variety of grades with
Nelson Suburbs. Coach Brendan Crichton says the Australian opposition is a “complete unknown” but expects the tournament to be at a very high standard. “We’d like to get to the semi-finals but where we go from there I don’t know.” Only a small squad fly to Queensland and it’s depth will be tested with Nayland’s two pronged strike force of Gagame and Jerry Donga under an injury cloud, while midfielder Cory Brown and defender Ben Alder are also carrying niggles. Brendan says he’s likely to give youngsters Izaak Cunningham, 13, and Josh Sansom, 14, plenty of game time. “It will be a good opportunity to get them integrated into our team culture and just get them started so in the future they can start leading the way.” “It’s good for development of football at Nayland. There’s boys in this team that have never been to Australia before, so that’s awesome.”

Stoke Women and Reds continue winning streak Stoke Women brushed past rivals Waimea Old Boys 15-7 on Saturday to remain top of the table. The girls were keen to put in solid performance with the sharp end of the season approaching. It seemed that Waimea also had a similar plan and most of the first half was a grinding stalemate, until Stoke winger Stephy Omundsen dotted down in the corner after some quick hands through the backline to edge Stoke in to the lead. The second half proved a lot more exciting, both for the number of points scored and the thunder and lightning overhead. Stoke crossed for a second shortly after the break, but Waimea weren’t done and hit back immediately with a converted try, closing the gap to 10-7. Stoke were forced to dig deep, and clawed their way back to within striking distance with some smart ball control. With time nearly up on the clock second five-eight Catrina Nicholas crashed over after a slick move off the back of a scrum to put the game beyond doubt. Playmaker Sallyanne Archibald marshaled the troops well to share the player of the match award with the hard working Janene Bang. Super Liquor Stoke Reds put in a gutsy performance to overcome Tapawera 6-3 in the freezing rain on Saturday. Slippery pill meant errors were a common occurance for both parties. “It was an ugly game, but ugly points are points [none the less] and we will take them,” captain Wayde Sinclair said in the aftermatch function. Players of the day were loosies Toby Harvey and Brodie Watkins. Stoke Reds play Rangers at Greenmeadows this Saturday.

More than 20 teams were playing at home and the majority came out trumps on their own turf with some tremendous results and plenty of smiles and skill. One of the highlights of the day came from the Stoke under-8 side that defeated Wanderers 12-5, thanks to some outstanding tries.
