Function or Event Tahuna tyre slasher shocks Mother’s Day celebrated with a run and a laugh

Police have been unable to track down Tahunanui’s car tyre slasher. Last week several car owners had their car tyres slashed in both Muritai and Rawhiti Sts. Hannah McColloch and her four flatmates woke to find two cars, parked side by side, slashed outside their Rawhiti St property

by the Tahunanui School courts. “My flatmate’s girlfriend went out to go home at about 10pm. She heard a tyre leaking air from a car belonging to my flatmate, Yasmine Ohlson. She went back out and text me ‘mine’s leaking too’. The marks where the knife has gone into the tyre are only an inch long,” Hannah says. Hannah and her flatmates could not believe that somebody would do

this to the vehicles. “Who would do this? What joy do they get out of doing that to the tyres? They must have stood between the two cars and slashed both sides. I don’t get what people get out of doing this to other people, it’s just not nice.” Hannah’s initial thoughts were that the attack may have been targeted, due to a string of bad luck with another flatmate’s car a few weeks ago.

“Our other flatmate went out to Wakefield a few weeks ago. One week his side mirror was snapped off and the next week his window wiper had been snapped off. All three events have happened on Thursdays.” She also believes that it may be part of a string of car attacks that have hit the Tahunanui area recently.

Bike riders pick frocks over lycra

Tweed may not be a popular fashion these days, but it made a spectacular comeback for the Retro Fun Ride on Sunday. Around 150 participants set off from the Honest Lawyer for the second Retro Fun Ride, dressed to impress in their best retro attire. “Nelson has a pretty amazing set of bike parks which are growing all the time, and to get people out on their bikes before the winter sets in; give them one last ride around, and to demonstrate that you can cycle in any clothes, you don’t need to be in lycra,” says event organiser Will Andrews. The winner of the mystery time, Anne Harvey, was awarded a bike from Alton Street Cycles, while the event’s “dashing dame”, Joyce Ballance, won a basket and bell, and “dapper chap”, Dylan Silbee, took home a Walz cap. Get Moving was a major sponsor with contributions also from Village Cycles and Avanti Plus.
