Temporary relief at Berryfield intersection Jo Kent Reporter
jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz
As the Richmond West development continues to grow, so does traffic congestion around the Berryfield intersection with Lower Queen Street, making it a difficult and sometimes dangerous road to turn into. The busy junction was scheduled to get a
$2.8 million upgrade in the 20212022 financial year, but a land purchase delay has held things up for at least another 12 months. The planned upgrade includes the addition of traffic lights and widening the road into two lanes, as well as measures to cater for pedestrians, cyclists and buses. However, the planned purchase of land from Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology
(NMIT), which is opposite the intersection, could not be completed in time for the work to be done in 2021-22. The council had already agreed that the upgrade was going to be on the list of highest priorities to be dealt with in the region, so this setback has led to disappointment within the ranks. “It means that the upgrade needs to be delayed by one or
two years,” says Tasman District Council activity planning adviser Drew Bryant. “We actually brought the project forward, as we see it as being a key component to cater for lots of residential and commercial growth around that whole Richmond West area. So it’s disappointing that despite us trying to advance things, we can’t get it done as fast as we were hoping for.”
Deputy mayor and regional transport committee chairman Stuart Bryant says his fear is that if things are delayed for one year, it could easily turn into two or even three years. “It was generally agreed that it was one of our highest priorities and should be done this year,” he says. “So clearly we are all

So long as precautions are in place both ends and they monitor it carefully, it’s a good thing.

Temporary relief at Berryfield intersection fRoM PAGE 1 frustrated with the delay. But we are working towards a solution.” A range of temporary measures are being considered to help provide some traffic control at the intersection. “We have looked at options and the most feasible temporary measure is an improved right turn merge lane on Lower Queen Street,” says council transportation manager Jamie McPherson. “This will be for traffic turning right out of Berryfield Drive to turn into before merging with
A merge lane is due to be introduced at the busy Berryfield intersection. Photo: Jo Kent. Lower Queen Street traffic.” The merge lane could be in place “by the end of the month” says Jamie. Even if the land deal happens sooner than
anticipated, essential construction work has to happen during summer, which is why the delay may run on into years. “Construction on projects like this needs
to occur during favourable climatic conditions, which is generally in summer,” says Jamie. “Construction will not be able to start this summer as the land purchase process will not be completed in time to go out to tender select a contractor. The next opportunity to begin construction will be summer (2022/23).” A new bridge over Borck Creek, opening later this year, will enable users of Berryfield Drive to connect with McShane Road, providing an alternative entry and exit to the entire Richmond West area.
More weeks off work in Tasman Jenny Nicholson There was an increase in weeks away from work due to injury in the Tasman region last year. According to Worksafe data, this goes against the national trend that saw less weeks lost in 2020 compared to 2019. Tasman was the only region surveyed that saw an increase last year. “Where more work is happening and economy is booming we start to see more injuries because more work is taking place,” says WorkSafe New Zealand chief executive Phil Parkes. When categorised into industries, 94 of the 306 weeks lost were due to injuries in manufacturing. Agriculture and construction were the next highest contributors to the tally. “In New Zealand we take pride in our ability to lead the world and punch above our weight. There is no reason New Zealand business-
es and workers can’t do this with health and safety,” says Phil. More than 500 New Zealanders have gone to work and not come home again in the last 10 years according to WorkSafe data. Others have sustained life changing injuries or poor health because of their work environment. Workplace fatalities in Tasman have decreased over the past five years, compared to the previous five. When thinking of health and safety, people often think broken legs or truck accidents. However, a worker is 15 times more likely to die from work-related disease than from a workplace accident. A WorkSafe representative says “think disease, cancer, respiratory illness, dust exposure, the impact different machines have on our body. It’s important we consider the health component of health and safety.”

A warmer winter for many Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
It’s looking like a warmer start to winter for many with the winter energy payment helping around one million people and NIWA predicting a winter with a possibility of warmer temperatures than usual. NIWA’s seasonal outlook for May and June indicated a 45 per cent chance of above average temperatures in the top of the south and a 45 per cent chance of near average tem-
peratures. Their predictions show just a 10 per cent chance of colder than normal temperatures. Rainfall figures were looking similar, with a nearly 50 per cent likelihood of a drier winter and a 40 per cent chance of a near normal season. Again, the likelihood of a wetter than usual season was low. The NIWA outlook for the country says that though frosts will occur, they are expected to be brief. From May to October all seniors, veterans and beneficiaries
will again receive the winter energy payment. For couples with children, the payment is just over $30 a week and for single people, just over $20 a week. In introducing the payment this year, the Labour party says it will decrease the chances of people ending up in hospital because of cold damp living conditions. They say it will also protect renters and lift some of the financial pressure off people who struggle to afford insulation and heating.

Living longer in Tasman
...End of Story Final facts on some of our stories with
17 March 2021 “Detail on top of detail in dollshouse” The dollshouse which was being raffled by Nelson Tasman Hospice shops has finally been won, and the winning ticket went to Sandy Brown from Murchison. “I only bought two tickets,” she says. “One in the Richmond store and one in the Nelson store, so I’m really lucky to have won.” The raffle made $600 for the charity after an anonymous donor gifted the house, complete with accessories, to the store. “We had so much interest in it as it was so beautiful,” says Richmond shop manager, Anete Smith. Sandy plans on giving the house to her granddaughter as a birthday present. “My granddaughter Kennedy
Jenny Nicholson Julie Nicol lives in Tasman where residents life expectancy at birth is the highest of any region in the country according to Stats New Zealand’s latest figures. The median life expectancy for women is 84.5 years and for men 81.2 years. Julie has just turned 80 and keeps fit walking her dog Scooby twice a day. Nationally, life expectancy for women has been 80+ for 20 years, but only reached 80 for men in the 2017-2019 period. “Differences in life expectancy at birth reflect several interrelated factors, including socioeconomic and health factors. For example, the 2018 Census showed that 22 per cent of people aged 15 years or over in Gisborne, where there was the lowest life expectancy of regions surveyed, were regular smokers, compared with 12 per cent in the Tasman region,” says a staff reporter at Stats New Zealand. Females of Asian descent have the highest life Julie Nicol with her dog Scooby enjoying a morning walk. expectancy at birth at 87.9 years, and Māori males the lowest at 73.4 years. Jo Kent turns five in July and she will be so thrilled to receive it,” says Sandy. “Although I’ll have to find a good hiding place for it until then as it’s quite big!” 31 March ‘Fashion fundraiser’ Over $11,000 was raised at the Pinnacle House Fashion Parade held last month, which will go towards upgrading the charity’s outdoor area. Assistant manager, Sheryl Waterhouse, says, “We feel so blessed by the generosity of our local community.” The plans for the outdoor area include tiling, adding shade sails, solid furniture and fencing around the property. Ticket sales along with a raffle, silent auction and other donations helped to achieve the overall amount.
Nelson Matters It is wrong that Labour has kept secret a radical report called He Puapua. This “national plan of action” was reported to Government in November 2019, but not released until last week after it was leaked to National. It proposes separate Māori health and court systems, Māori ownership of the foreshore and seabed, separate Māori wards on all councils, Māori governance over water and a separate Māori
Parliament. New Zealanders have a right to know Labour’s plans and it was sneaky to have hidden it from the public at Election 2020. You can get a paper copy from my Nelson office or here: https://www. nzcpr.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/He-Puapua.pdf The two systems approach has been adopted with the health reforms with a separate Māori Health Authority. Labour has
agreed this Authority will have a veto over decisions by Government on everyone’s health. Separate systems will be divisive and inefficient. Pacific Island New Zealanders have the same health challenges as Māori. National’s position is that every New Zealander, no matter their race, should have the same rights to healthcare. Labour has already fast-tracked legislation through Parliament
on Māori wards on councils, removing the public having a say contrary to their Election 2020 policy on local government. The changes are occurring by stealth. Government documents now routinely refer to Aotearoa rather than New Zealand. I have no objection to both names being used but if we are to change our country’s name the people should have a say. It is right we acknowledge and

address the wrongs of the past. I am proud of Nationals record in settling Treaty claims and my role as a Minister helping settle the 9 claims covering all of the South Island. National supports targeting but not separate systems. We support Whanau Ora but not a separate Maori Health Authority or Maori Courts. The future is not separatism but better together. Advert.

A new shopping concept for Richmond is giving people the chance to make money from old clothes and accessories they may have tucked away at home. Re:vive, which opens its doors on Queen Street in the next few days, is selling nearly-new, second-hand items with a twist – the shop only takes 50 per cent of the sale price, while the other half goes straight back to the original owner. “It’s win-win really,” says shop manager Mel Harnetty. “People can make a bit of cash from decent clothes that they no longer wear, and our customers can buy high-end labels at a fraction of the cost.” And it’s not just about bargainhunting either. With buzzwords ‘repair, reuse and recycle’ being heard more often these days, the shop is also playing a part in reducing what ends up in landfill. “It’s important to think about what we do with our things when we no longer need them,” says Mel. Surrounded by four charity shops on Queen Street, Mel doesn’t think Re:vive will take anything away from them. “We are stocking labels which cost over $100 from new, and those things aren’t common in charity

There’s no point in selling the same stuff, so we are offering something a bit ‘extra’.” Customers can browse through rails of branded goods for a snip of the original price. “We’ve had some great things through the door so far and we continually take in new stock.” As well as second-hand items,
Re:vive is promoting local craft too by stocking things like handmade candles and scrubs. “We want to give locals a chance at showcasing their products and offer a different type of shop in Richmond.” To get involved, take your items along to Re:vive, located next to Taylors We Love Shoes, and Mel
will do the rest. “We don’t guarantee to take everything we are offered, but we’ll look through what we are given and pick out the bits we think would work. We are after nearly new things.” Customers get their 50 per cent share once the item sells. If it doesn’t sell after a set time, you get your item back.
It’s Harvest Gala time at St Paul’s The Harvest Gala at Saint Paul’s School on Salisbury Road is on this Saturday 15 May from 11am to 2pm. It is usually a bi-annual event and a major fundraiser, but it couldn’t go ahead in 2020 due to Covid. This time the fundraising focus is a new playground as the school has outgrown their current one due to roll growth. There are lots of fun activities planned for all the family, including pony rides, a bouncy castle, a chocolate wheel, a silent auction, baking, second-hand books, a white elephant stall and lots of games for kids to keep them entertained. There will also be a variety of food options, coffee carts, plants and produce on offer to enjoy. There are some incredible items up for grabs in the silent auction, which have been kindly donated by local businesses to support the school in their fundraising effort. There is jewellery from Benjamin Black; a Kitchen Studios design package, worth $2000; wheel alignments; WOF vouchers; an Awaroa lodge stay; Mapua ferry vouchers; gym memberships; family photoshoots; Origin Air flights and so much more. Bring your own coffee cup, shopping bags and plenty of cash – although there will be a cash-out facility on site. If there is light rain it will go ahead, but it will be cancelled in heavy rain.

Opportunity to make custom guitars Jenny Nicholson Reporter
jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz
A Brightwater man is sharing the guitar-making expertise that saw him make international musician Sinead O’Connor a guitar. Dave Gilberd, owner operator of Goldbeard Guitars has taught over 60 students the process of crafting their very own instrument and has loved every moment. “Bring a dream, take home a treasure,” he says. Dave took a break from the guitar business while he moved from Wellington to Tasman in 2020, reopening Brightwater Motors. “I needed to get Brightwater Motors humming before I could consider setting up the Goldbeard workshop again, but we’re finally there and I’m really excited to be bringing the business to our new home in this incredible region,” says Dave. The magic of guitar making happens in a workshop above Brightwater Motors, where Dave offers classes on full size guitar, backpacker’s guitar, and ukulele making. Andrew MacDonald’s wife Kirsten gifted him a class for his birthday and he enjoyed the week spent making his backpacker’s guitar. He chose rosewood and a native timber, kahikatea, to work with. “Different woods make different sounds, particularly in the larger guitars,” says Dave. He realised that people had an appetite to learn the craft. After lockdown
last year, interest escalated adding impetus to his plans to relaunch the business. Goldbeard guitars are designed in consultation with the customer and tailormade to fit their body and playing style. There is freedom to personalise instruments, through choice of wood and design of key components, like the head-stock, fretboard and bridge. The upcoming ‘Beards and Scruffs’ (parents and their teens) ukulelebuilding course is offered during the school holidays from 19 to 24 July. For more info or to book a course, go to Dave Gilberd tutoring Andrew MacDonald to make his goldbeard.co.nz. own guitar. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.
Volunteers for Helping Families, the charity which provides free clothes and goods to people in need, are struggling to meet the demand for warm winter blankets, duvets and bedding. “We had an abundance of wool blankets and snuggly bedding,” says Kristy Fielding. “But our supplies are running low so we would welcome some donations to help restock.” Everything from duvets, wool or fleece blankets and sleeping bags would be useful but must be in a good useable condition. “The people who use our service have fallen on hard times, so we try to ensure that donations are something that you would be happy to use yourself.” If you think you can help out, email donate@helpingfamilies.org.nz for the drop-off point address. Heather Kelling, Liz Ewins, Leona, Rae Rhodes, and Sarah Carpinter were part of an official hand over of cheque recently. Raising funds for a donation was a first-time event for the Nelson Veterans Tennis Club but is one they plan to continue. The Club, which is based in Hope at the Hope Tennis Club, chose to use their annual tournament as a fundraiser and agreed the donation should go to St John’s Ambulance. President of the Nelson Veterans Tennis Club, Liz Ewins, says they chose St John’s because of the good relationship that can be formed between them. The annual tournament saw 106 players from Nelson, Marlborough and further afield take part and together they raised the donation of $500 which was presented to St John Home Health Representative, Heather Kelling. Just a thought... Tony Etchells Parishioner, Our Lady of Perpetual Help If I could offer you one piece of advice, it would be this - whatever you do, go and see the movie Nomadland. It’s a remarkable piece of cinema which has rightly collected a hatful of awards, including a Best Motion Picture Golden Globe for its writer, director and producer Chloé Zhao. Long story short, it’s a tale of survival, based on Nomadland: Surviving America in the TwentyFirst Century, a non-fiction work by journalist Jessica Bruder. It dramatises the real life phenomena of older Americans living transient lives in camper vans. They’re ‘houseless, not homeless’ according to Fern, Nomadland’s sixty-some protagonist as she travels the country in search of casual work, one of an older generation of victims of America’s economic downturn. Life on the road isn’t easy. It calls for patience, determination and skill but what’s striking is that, for once, this isn’t an American story focussed on rugged individuals. Instead, as Fern faces hardship, she discovers the depth of kindness and human decency found within other people. As a Catholic, this aspect of Nomadland appeals to me. In part, the film reminds me of John Steinbeck’s great novel The Grapes of Wrath which itself evokes the flight out of Egypt and a displaced people’s life on the road. It also strongly brings to mind the Gospels and the special character of Christ’s ministry. Jesus was,

after all, the ‘friend of sinners’ (Luke 7:34) most at home in the company of outcasts. He valued the abandoned, healed the sick and defended and consoled the poor. Christ was also always moving, teaching where he could, often in the dust by the side of the road. Today, he’d be found amongst Fern and her fellow travellers. It’s impossible to take this further without thinking about New Zealand’s nomads, our own lives lived out in house trucks, busses, caravans, garages, sleep outs or insecure private rentals.
Mortgages Made Easy The same economic forces which stripped Fern of her livelihood, and swept Steinbeck’s tenant farmers onto the road, operate just as freely here. At the same time, New Zealanders often celebrate themselves through stories of rugged individuals. That’s fair enough but Christ never asked anyone to be rugged. Instead, he urged that we live for and amongst each other so that, like Fern, we sense the joy of our shared, Christlike humanity, discovered only when people are kind.

The Diary of Sarah Higgins Ruth Russ
Anyone familiar with diarykeeping knows that the best time to record a day’s happenings is on that same day. Details are still sharp; people and places not yet hazy. Yet Sarah Higgins, aged just 11 when she immigrated to New Zealand with her family, could not keep a diary of the voyage on the Bolton or the hardships she faced in the fledgling colony of Nelson in 1842. She was illiterate. She couldn’t write until 74 years old, and used her new-found literacy to write her autobiography: ‘an eloquent account of the rigours of the 1840s and 50s’, wrote Jim McAloon in Nelson: A Regional History.
Sarah’s handwriting was large and shaky in places, and it pays to read the diary out loud, as she (logically) spelled words the way they sound, and frequently missed letters. Over six decades had passed since her migration from England to New Zealand, and yet she retained vivid memories, rendered in a conversational tone: ‘Well my fathers naem was [Stephen] Sharp and he ad a nice little home in kent five mile from the see port town of dover… My mother dide when I was a babe’. After Stephen was widowed a second time, Sarah recalls, ‘his Mother an[d] father came and live with us and I got very fond of my grandmother. She often ust to tell me I was her Little
right hand’. Despite attending school with her siblings, Sarah was not taught to write, but she states that ‘I could make all my under garments when I was twelve years hold’. After initially being refused passage to New Zealand by the New Zealand Company, the Sharp family were eventually given permission after several doctors wrote letters for them. They departed from London aboard the Bolton in October 1841, sailing past their hometown and the familiar white cliffs: ‘we ad the last sight of the old motherland when we seen dover with [the] cliffs’. New Year’s Eve brought ‘a fearful gail’, which Sarah described in great detail over several pages of the diary: ‘the

The storm slowed the Bolton’s progress after doing immense damage to the ship; however another vessel appeared several days later. Timbers were offered to help get the Bolton underway again. After a journey of five months, the Sharp family arrived at ‘Nelson arbber’ only to be greeted by the shipwrecked Fifeshire blocking the narrow entrance. Sarah writes, ‘we all ad to be brought a shor in boats but we could not get enney of [our things]’: a taste of the difficulties to come.

Fundraising programme introduced This year, Simply Asia Food Group has decided to introduce a fundraising programme which has proved successful in one of their Blenheim restaurants. “The community has looked after us all these years, so now we want to give some benefit back to Nelson people,” says Bu-nga. “We’ve done it for many years already through Bamboo Garden in Blenheim and have received great feedback.”

Bu-nga says they have planned to offer the fundraising programme through Miracle Restaurant in Nelson and Chai Yo in Richmond. “It could be a non-profit organisation, a sport’s club which wants to raise funds for a tournament, or it may be to support someone who needs medical treatment to help meet their medical expenses.” How does it work? Come and talk to Bu-nga about your fundraising request and when tickets are sold, the recipient will be able to have a meal worth $40 at Miracle Restaurant or Chai Yo in Richmond. “We will share our profit with the organiser. We will give 40 percent to them and the rest will cover our labour and food costs.” NB: The tickets purchased are for the meal only, not drinks.
Simply Asia Food Group, which is owned by Bu-nga Krataitong (centre) and Nuttavut Rosdienglum, has fantastic teams at all of its local restaurants, including Chai Yo, Lemongrass and Ben & Maxxi in Richmond. New owners for paintball centre & golf park Recent newcomers to Tasman, Bo and Norman Hensley, are delighted to be the new owners of Armageddon Paintball, Redstone Golf Park and the 1 Shot Café in Wakefield. “Moving to the area has been a dream for us and ending up with this awesome property – we literally pinch ourselves to believe we are really here,” says Bo. “Despite having been a teacher and Norman an engineer; we have long been looking for an opportunity to do our own thing. When we came down to Nelson in January to hike the Heaphy Track, we visited Redstone and knew it was where we wanted to be.” Bo says they were especially
captivated by the beautiful golf course in its stunning gardenlike setting, surrounded by awesome birdlife and peaceful waterways. As the golf course itself is flat, it appeals to beginner golfers, but with the waterways and number four hole on its own moat, it certainly offers a challenge to more experienced golfers. Meanwhile, Armageddon is a well-established business with three paintball fields: Purgatory, Judgement and Mayhem. The Town of Purgatory, suitable for ages 11 and up, is an apocalyptic scene complete with abandoned buildings, motor cars, bunkers; everything you need for an action-packed game of
paintball. The first Sunday of each month is Super Sunday where players only pay for their paint and all gear hire is free. The Nelson Airsoft Corps train here on the second and fourth Sundays of the month and the Nelson Paintball Club every third Sunday. ‘Splatmaster’ – a low powered paintball shotgun, is ideal for children aged 6 to 10 years and is proving to be an increasingly popular party option. Private parties, corporate functions, stag/hen’s dos and team building functions can also be booked. A popular package on offer is to play paintball in the morning, enjoy a BBQ catered lunch and then play 9 holes of golf in the afternoon.
The licensed 1 Shot Café offers a selection of beers, local wines and barista coffees, as well as a selection of burgers and pizzas for hungry players. “Once again we are proud to be sponsors of the Fair Play Awards for the Tasman Rugby Union.” Armageddon Paintball, Redstone Golf Park and 1 Shot Cafe are located at 334 Wai-iti Valley Road, Wakefield. Visit their Facebook pages to find out more details. Newcomer deal: for the months of May and June, we are offering a half-priced round of golf, Monday to Friday, to anyone presenting this article at Redstone Golf Park (Value $10).

Testimonials Three years ago, I was in need of new dentures. I have done some research in Blenheim and Nelson region and after talking to Bays Dentures in Richmond, I decided to get them made there. I was working and living in Blenheim at the time and had to arrange to travel over to get them made and fitted. This was not a problem for Daniela who fitted me in to suit my time off. I had special requirements as to what I wanted and this was achieved no problems either.. After final fitting, I only required one small adjustment for total comfort. I’m super pleased. By far the best dentures I’ve ever had (3rd pair). My thanks Daniela. Happy customer Murray Webber From the moment I met Daniela, I just knew I had made the right choice. Daniela is a true professional, her clinic spotless, her attention to detail first class and I have no problem in recommending Daniela to others. Ruth Thorn

Sport Waimea pull off a miracle www.shuttersport.co.nz
Jonty Dine
Dead and buried at 20 points down with 10 minutes to play, Waimea Old Boys pulled off an absolute miracle against Stoke at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Campbell Parata was once again called upon to kick the winning points in a dramatic conclusion to the round five Tasman Trophy clash. With time up on the clock, Waimea worked its way 80 meters to score in the right-hand corner and set up the grandstand finish. After an injury delay, Parata’s sideline conversion split the uprights to close out a thrilling come-from-behind win. Captain Eden Beech says he had complete faith in his young sharpshooter. “He is f****** clutch, it’s unreal, bloody good to have him on the pitch each week.” Eden says his side showed real heart in the final 10 minutes. “Not too sure how we pulled that off, it took the boys about 70 minutes to get started.” Down by three converted tries, Eden says the message was simply to start playing with a bit of fire. Stoke looked to have done more than enough to secure its third win of the season, holding

First-five Taine Robinson bagged 27-points in what appeared to be a match winning performance. However, like they did against Marist a fortnight ago, Waimea proved its championship credentials with an uncanny ability to snatch vic-
tory from the jaws of defeat. Robison opened the scoring with back-to-back penalties before Liam Miller pounced on a loose Waimea pass and linked with Saul Lewis who streaked away for the opening try. Parata finally put his side on the board, but Robinson responded immediately to
reestablish a 13-point advantage. The young fly half stretched it to 16 with another penalty as ill-discipline and errors were costing Waimea dearly. After a sustained period on attack, the hosts eventually cracked Stoke through lock Brent McKenzie however Robinson’s fifth and longest penalty
right on the stroke of half-time gave his side a 22-10 lead. Stoke again struck first in the second, Karl Ratcliffe the beneficiary of some slick backline play. The visitors hit 30 through Robinson’s sixth penalty coming on the back of a bustling break from centre Amanaki Veamatahau. Penalties kept mounting against Waimea but Robinson would miss consecutive shots at goal. A try to Taya Brown offered some hope for Waimea before Robinson put an exclamation on his performance with a stunning solo try. Cameron Rodridge then sliced his way through the previously staunch Stoke defence to give Waimea a chance to steal it at the death. Deep into injury time, Waimea eventually cracked the line through replacement Chris Mason. A lengthy delay followed as Mason was injured while scoring giving Parata plenty of time to line up his shot and he made no mistake. Elsewhere, Marist picked up a big 66-7 win over Awatere/ Moutere while Kahurangi maintain its spot at the top of the table with a 46-17 defeat of Waitohi. Nelson was edged 25-22 by Renwick.
Rugby runs in the family Jenny Nicholson “In winter time we may as well live at the rugby field,” says Stacey Davis. Stacey is taking a break from playing to help coach and manage her sons’ teams. Husband, Jacob also coaches. It’s a family of forwards with Stacey and 12-year-old Coby playing number 8, 8-year-old Nathan playing all
positions but favouring forward positions and Jacob having been a forward in his playing days. Three-year-old Te Marie is already adept at passing the rugby ball. The Waimea Old Boys have their 125th anniversary coming up at Queen’s Birthday Weekend. It’s high speed and high adrenaline in the forest Philip Hagan Spooners Forest will roar into life as some of the most powerful, purpose-built off-road race cars battle for the national title. Racers from all parts of the country will line up for the Green Flag in the forest near Belgrove. Among them are some of the fastest racers in NZ. Nelson racer, #173 Nevil Basalaj is in a battle to dominate the Class 1, unlimited horsepower, field. His number 1 nemesis is #1 Dan Fisher. He is armed with a Razorback imported from Australia. Fisher knows the difference could come down to local knowl-
edge of this forest. As the current national champion he has this feature and many more in his arsenal. Another racer to watch is #110 Alex Bright. Alex has a Supercharged 6.2 litre V8, with grit and determination on his side. To catch the leader will be one thing, to get past will be something else. Overtaking at speed will be an act of pure bravery unless your adversary is developing a problem. But problems do happen when racing in the forest. Holes form in corners as the laps go by. Rocks can destroy anything made of metal and trees act like magnets for the hapless racer. One of the
best prepared is #333 Brendon Old from Taranaki. Although limited to 1600cc, Brendon is one of the most mature racers in the field. If he can qualify well and start in the top 6, you’ll need more than a V8 to stop him from winning. The Ruff ’n’Tuff 250 has been raced in one form or another for over 20 years. It has been known as the Castrol 300 among a few other names. It has always been raced in Spooners Forest and this year the race carries vital points in the 2021 JG CIVIL New Zealand Offroad Racing Championship competition. Competitors will face 12, 20km laps
and race across ridge lines, through gullies, on forest roads and muddy tracks. There are river crossings and some obstacles best tackled at high speed to use sheer momentum to get through. sides, and a feature for Wanderers was the tenacious defence shown when Takaka were in the ascendancy. An improved discipline within the team resulted in less penalties and it is worth noting that this team plays well when the discipline is correct. Takaka brought an enthusiasm and flair to the game and scored a second try to bring the score to 22-10 before a final try ensured the victory to the hosts at 29-10. Try scorers in the second half for Wanderers were Gareth Palmer and Kyle Davis and special mention must be made of the effort and commitment of Ducati

Morrell-Hopa, Shaun Whittaker and Josh Kelly who carried the fight to Takaka all day. The deserved Player of the Day awards went to Hunter van der Fits in the forwards and Jake Jenner in the backs, but as with Takaka the standout feature was the contribution of the many young players having their first season in Div 2 whether starting or entering the game as impact players. The later game at Centennial Park was a Women’s game between Wanderers and Moutere, fresh from a torrid draw against defending champions Waimea Old Boys last week. Wanderers started well and

gaining all their own lineout ball. This dominance and ball supply enabled the backline to run freely with Gareth Palmer and Jake Jenner controlling play and providing good variations. Jayden Roeske and Hunter van der Fits ensured the forward dominance was constant and Roeske was rewarded with a fine try in the first half alongside another from Josh Kelly, and with a Takaka fight back resulting in a try to the visitors, Wanderers went to halftime with a 17-5 lead. Rugby made a full return to business as usual on Saturday when all Junior rugby commenced across Tasman with Taylors Wanderers Sports Club having 17 teams in action across all sectors from Under 6 through to Seniors. All 13 teams in the Junior section were very happy to be back playing and all recorded enjoyable games throughout the region. In the Senior sector, Wanderers Div 2 team, rewarded the new dedicated sponsor, A. C. Palmer & Sons, with a fine performance against Takaka in front of a very large, supportive crowd at Centennial Park. Takaka, returning to Div 2 after a short break, fielded a competitive mix of youth and some more senior players to seriously challenge Wanderers, who were fielding a team determined to make amends for the loss last week against Huia. It was noticeable right from the beginning that an improved attitude existed, especially at the set piece where Wanderers dominated at scrum time, as well as
recycled the ball for 7 phases before an error almost right on the try line resulted in a length of the field break out for Moutere and a try under the posts at the opposite end. Frustratingly, this occurred three times and Moutere built up a handy lead, but not without Wanderers genuinely competing. However, an inability to maintain possession, especially when tackled low and brought to ground, prevented Wanderers from creating sufficient pressure on Moutere that could result in points. Moutere defended resolutely, but unfortunately, a serious leg injury to Molly Inman in the second half necessitated abandoning the game with Moutere leading comfortably 44-7. Wanderers Sports Club will host all three senior games against Waimea Old Boys on Saturday at Centennial Park with the Women’s game at 11.30am, Div 2 at 1.15pm and the Div 1 Tasman Trophy match will commence at 3pm. The first match of the day will be at 10am with Wanderers Under 15 playing Nelson College White.

Rabbit Island trail races Yvonne West Totara Picnic area on Rabbit Island came alive on Saturday 8th May, as 92 participants, their supporters and the Event Team prepared for the Family Friendly Trail Races on the Island. The 19 children ran a 3.5km circuit, while the adults had a choice of 7kms or 10kms. Everyone started together, with the adults providing lots of support and encouragement to the children. The children peeled off from the Great Taste Trail at Barnicoat Road, while the 7km runners peeled off at Cooper Road. The 10km course continued around the Island’s coastal track turning into Bird Road and returning via Cooper Road. Participants com-
mented on the great variety of scenery, good signage out on the courses and a great event crew. Well done to all participants, but notably to the following: Zoe Bonny and Nicholas Newberry, first girl and boy respectively in the 3.5 km course, Ian Morrison and Amber Bonny, first and second placed runners in the 7.5km course and Eileen Beattie the fastest walker. Matthew Bowen and Hayden Squance battled it out at the front of the 10km field while Angela Leck took out the women’s race. David Martin and Ros Smyth put in a great effort to lead the walkers home. We now look forward to the very popular ‘Wallace Shield’ cross country races at Rabbit Island, starting this Saturday 15th May.
