Bars reject alcohol plan

The hospitality industry is rejecting all of the proposed changes to the Local Alcohol Policy announced last week. Among the changes to the policy announced by Nelson City Council were for restaurants to stop serving alcohol at 12 midnight, suburban taverns and bars – like the Turf Hotel in Stoke – to stop serving alcohol at 1am and for the introduction of

a one way door policy in the city’s nightclubs from 2am. Bars in the CBD will still be allowed to open until 3am under the proposal. But Hospitality Association president Ron Taylor says after meeting with its members last Thursday, the group will “strongly fight” the proposed changes and says they won’t work.

We feel it’s a backwards step and we’ve worked so hard to get where we are.” Hospitality Association regional manager Jeanette Swift says the plan punishes business owners and the “vast majority” of those who drink responsibly. “Let’s look where the harm really is and

But while some skydivers only jump out of a plane once, opting to tick off the bucket list entry and move on to the next thrill-seeking adventure, Marcel was hooked and just wanted to go again. Fast forward 19 years, Marcel is now a member of the ‘1000 jump club’ – yes that’s right, he’s been skydiving 1000 times, and the good thing is, it no longer makes him nervous. “You become very comfortable being in the air, it’s hard to explain,” says Marcel. “I don’t get nervous though.” Looking back, he says the 100th jump was probably more memorable than the 1000th where he landed in a farm – the only catch

Conference ‘great for Nelson’ Andrew Board

Bring Daylight Into Your Home!

Politicians, protestors, nerdy young Nats and journalists by the truck load. Nelson had all the right ingredients for a major political conference over the weekend and the city stepped up to the plate as well, with all parties enjoying their stay and in the process injecting a fair amount of cash into the local economy. The National Party conference on Saturday and Sunday delivered plenty of headlines across the country for the policies announced by Prime Minister John Key and the protests taking place outside the Rutherford Hotel, where the conference was held. Protestors took the opportunity to voice their opposition to a range of policies including the GCSB bill, TPPA negotiations, workers’ rights and the sale of state owned assets. But the major success for Nelson was it just being here in the first place. The conference was the first to make use of the upgraded facilities at the Rutherford Hotel and local MP Nick Smith says the delegates were impressed. “This is a big deal

It’s the first time in the party’s 77-year history that its national conference has been staged in our region.’’ The fun began on Friday night when John Key officially opened a new exhibition on former Prime Minister and Nelson man Keith Holyoake at the Nelson Provincial Museum. There the PM gifted Holyoake’s typewriter, which he bought at an auction, to the museum. Commenting on his predecessor, John joked, “He had the good sense to know that greens

were something you ate, not something you listen to.” That was followed by a craft beer tasting back at the Rutherford, where Nick unveiled his home brew that featured in last week’s Nelson Weekly. Policy announcement and other official engagements were held on Saturday and Sunday. Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive Lynda Keene says conferences are great for the region and more are on the way with the 2014 Local Government New Zealand conference coming to Nelson.

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz Near hits, suffering businesses and neglect were just some of the issues brought to light by 300 concerned residents, business owners and school children who marched up Tahunanui Dr on Friday. The protest was organised to fight proposed changes to State Highway 6 that they say will ruin the community and to highlight an almost decade-long wait for safety issues to be resolved says Mike Thomas, co owner of Smugglers Pub & Café and the chair of Tahuna business Association. Mike says locals feel like they are being “neglected and ignored” by both NZTA and Nelson City Council over their opposition to remove all parking outside businesses or make the road a clearway 24 hours a day. He says Friday’s protest was about drawing attention to safety issues that have been ongoing and to stop any changes taking place without consideration of the local community. “Back in 2004 the structural plan that Nelson City Council released stated they wanted to keep Tahunanui as a village. The trouble you have with a main state highway going through a village is that it puts more pressure on our shops, our parking, on our resources and our children as well. It’s a safety issue.” He says both the business association and the general public want something to be done to retain safety, street parking,

We do want to make a lot of noise, and we do want to be heard. We want some respect from NZTA and for them to understand we mean business.” Jacinda Stevenson, a local resident with three Tahunanui school children who normally walk to school together, says it is getting frustratingly more difficult to do so safely. “We’ve had so many near misses. It’s supposed to be a nice relaxing thing, walking to school, but I just find that I end up abusing a motorist who doesn’t give way. It is just unsafe.”

The i20

NCC councillor Rachel Reese attended the march and says she was “delighted” to see the number of people that turned up to support the cause. “I think Tahunanui has been overlooked and hasn’t been shown the respect they deserve over many years. They have raised their safety concerns about this intersection now repeatedly, and NZTA’s last approach of ignoring them was really unacceptable. It’s time that the council in Nelson advocated for this community and I’m absolutely behind them.” Mayor Aldo Miccio met with Mike Thomas last night and says he agrees with their concerns and will continue to lobby the government over the issues.

The Black Caps, likely to boast superstars Brendon McCullum, Ross Taylor and Martin Guptill will face the powerhouse boys from the Caribbean with household names Chris Gayle and Kieran Pollard leading one of the most explosive battling lineups in international cricket. Nelson Cricket Association general manager Ed Shuttleworth says they are extremely proud to be hosting their first men’s international. “To bring international cricket to our region has been a goal for many years and achieving this is a moment of real pride for all those involved in developing cricket and the facilities in the region.” Last week, Therese Walsh, NZ’s head of the Cricket World Cup, told the Nelson Weekly it was likely that Saxton Oval would get a test run before the world cup.

Farmers project confirmed by council A proposed 6000 square metre retail development in central Nelson, with Farmers as the anchor tenant, has been confirmed. Nelson City Council discussed the proposal, including selling land in Wakatu Square for the “significant retail development”, last week and it is now open for public submission. Windermere Holdings Ltd (WHL) is seeking to build a 6000m2 structure that would include a Farmers Trading Company store and other retail. WHL would also create car parking on adjoining councilowned land. The development was reported in last week’s Nelson Weekly. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the development would create a city hub for shoppers and

More names put forward for council The field is getting bigger for the local body elections, which are just under two months away. Nominations need to be in by noon on Friday and as of yesterday afternoon only five nominations have been confirmed, but many more are expected this week. More than 20 candidates have confirmed to Nelson Weekly that they will stand for a position as councillor at Nelson City Council. In the mayor’s race there are still only four candidates but current councillor Ian Barker is leaving the possibility of standing open. On Monday morning Ian told the Weekly he had yet to make up his mind whether to stand for mayor or for council. “I’ll do that at noon on Friday, as is my prerogative,” he said. The other candidates for mayor are Rachel Reese, Brian McGurk, Aldo Miccio and Richard Osmaston. Among the candidates standing for council are Derek Nees, Gaile Noonan, Colleen Marshall, Owen

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Houliston, Kevin Gardener, Murray Leaning, Trudi Brand, Matt Lawry and Matthew Buckingham. They will join current councillors hoping for re-election including Pete Rainy, Paul Matheson, Mike Ward, Derek Shaw, Eric Davy, Ruth Copeland and Kate Fulton. Current councillor Jeff Rackley told the Weekly he will not stand for a second term, joining Ali Boswijk and Gail Collingwood as incumbents not seeking reelection. After the noon cut off on Friday, candidates will have two months to campaign before the election closes on October 12. Several ‘meet the candidates’ events have already been organised for September, two by the Nelson Resident’s Association, with the aim of giving voters the opportunity to hear what the candidates stand for.

Spending growth reaches 9% for July Spending growth of nine per cent in Nelson for the month of July has the city’s promotions group delighted. Spending through the Paymark network, which processes around three quarters of all electronic transactions in New Zealand,

saw a 9.7 per cent increase in spending through its network in Nelson from July 2012. The national average for the same month was 9.2 per cent. Paymark head of sales and marketing, Paul Whiston, says this July was blessed with warmer

weather and more workdays – which always impacts positively on spending figures, compared with July last year that had poor weather. In Nelson the number of transactions was up 7.5 per cent with spending up to $73.4

million, compared with $66.9 million in 2012. Duncan Gray, chairman of the city’s retail marketing body, Uniquely Nelson, says the Paymark data shows a positive trend in retail spending alongside significant retail activity and

promising retail sales growth reported by numerous city retailers over the past few months. “The city’s retail environment has been showing consistent growth and many of our long-standing retailers have reported sales are up on the same time last year.”

Pub patrons go hairy for charity

When Neil Kelly went to the airport to pick up his partner after a holiday in Europe she didn’t even recognise him and walked straight past. It is just one of the side effects of growing a beard for the first time in his life. Neil is being joined by nine other men and five women from Randall’s Cafe & Bar social club in an effort to raise money for the Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust. It started when the group, based at Randall’s at Victory Square, were thinking of ways they could raise money for charity and a club member suggested a hairy idea. The challenge is for the men to grow a beard for three months, the women in the group thought it was a laugh so some of the men challenged them to take part too,

A month into the challenge the group say the worst is over. “A few were coming in scratching and complaining but it’s grown through now so most are happy now,” says social club president Gavin Hill. Shane Warland, a pest controller, says he

spent the first few weeks apologising to customers for his scruffy appearance but now that it’s grown he doesn’t mind it. “My wife and daughter aren’t so keen though,” he joked. The group is encouraging people to donate to their cause, with every dollar they raise going to the hospice, says Gavin. “We all

Quad tournament 50 years on Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Gerald Kember once kicked 14 points for the All Blacks in a test match in Johannesburg. He played 18 other games for the national side and for years played for Wellington at provincial level. But at 67, he says his days of getting “emotional” over rugby games are past him, unless the All Blacks are playing. Oh, and Nelson College of course. Gerald was in Nelson last week with 13 other members of Nelson College’s 1963 1st XV to watch his alma mata compete in the world’s oldest schoolboy rugby competition, the Quadrangular Tournament. Nelson College finished runner up after losing to Wellington College 16-10 in the final last Wednesday but Gerald says the opportunity to come down to Nelson from Auckland with his fellow teammates and watch Nelson play was a “special” opportunity. It was 50 years since the team played the tournament in Wellington, where it drew its opening game with Wanganui College before beating Christ’s College in the curtain raiser to the final on the second day. Gerald, who was captain of that team and its first five eight, says watching the current team play was exciting as it

That’s the rugby I like.” Gerald says Nelson played club rugby fifty years ago and their only opportunity to play other school teams was the quad tournament and an annual fixture with Hutt Valley College. “I think we were a very good side, I think we disappointed ourselves not doing better at those tournaments. We had a very good side. We were a good attacking unit.” Several of the team’s players went on to represent Auckland, Canterbury, Otago,

King Country, Wellington and New Zealand Universities after leaving Nelson. Gerald says this year was the first time the team had caught up for a reunion and they enjoyed spending time with each other and watching the rugby. “The whole week has been special. There was a lot of pride in watching these guys and we were definitely rooting for them. I thought they played very exciting rugby, I thought they played the best rugby to watch even though they didn’t win the thing.” The team was one of four having a reunion around the Quad tournament.

Rider’s encounter with angry ram goes viral A Nelson trail bike rider has received international attention for a video showing him being confronted by an angry ram. Marty Todd’s YouTube video, in which a surly ram prevents him from riding up a dirt track, has gone viral after being featured on CNN and the UK’s Daily Mail website. “I was riding my trail bike up a hill when I came across this grumpy old ram with huge horns,’’ Marty told APNZ. “It charged my bike then started attacking me.’’ Marty said he couldn’t turn his trail bike around as he was on a steep hill and if he did the ram would have charged him side on which could have broken his leg. “This guy is known for his aggression and attacks for no reason, he’s even attacked a group of pig hunting dogs. In the end I had to pick up a branch and wave it in front of him, he didn’t like the noise and backed off enough for me to make my escape.’’ To watch the full video visit www. nelsonweekly.co.nz.

Sanctuary sells 400 fence posts Stoats, rats and possums beware, the campaign to fence Nelson’s Brook Waimarama Sanctuary has reached a milestone, with 400 fence posts sponsored since the launch in May. This exceeds the target for June-July and means the Get Behind the Fence campaign has already raised $130,000 from supportive individuals, families, businesses and clubs. The news goes along with an announcement by Nelson City Council last week that it has accepted the trust’s business plan and feasibility study and will allocate a little over $1million for the project. The 400th post was sponsored by Dr Ann Pearson of Cambridge, who also requested campaign brochures for friends and contacts in the Waikato. Sanctuary general manager Hudson Dodd says the Nelson community, along with people further afield, had responded enthusiastically to the opportunity to sponsor the posts that will go into the 14km pest-proof fence. “The trust is very grateful to everyone who has already sponsored a post,” he says. “There’s still plenty of scope for people to join in the growing buzz about the benefits the sanctuary will bring to the Nelson region, and get behind the fence!” The fence post campaign is the public fundraising part of the overall campaign, which has now raised $3.2m through grants and major donations towards the $4.75m needed to build the 14km fence. “We’re at the two thirds point, which is pretty exciting,” says Hudson. “And the fact that people are stepping up to sponsor fence posts from all around the country shows what a nationally significant project the Brook Sanctuary really is.” While most fence posts to date are sponsored by families and individuals, the trust also encourages schools, streets and community groups to band together and sponsor a fencepost. Hudson reported that the corporate side of the fundraising is also going well, with two major sponsorship partners about to be signed up. Fence post sponsorship pricing ranges from $100 to $5000.

Dorothy Stanton presses record on her tape recorder and tells her subject to go from the beginning. She asks for basic details first; the names of their parents, where they were born, and how many siblings they had, before asking “now tell me everything that you want me to know”. The 87 year old is one of several Nelson Hospice volunteers that call themselves “life story writers”, people who write biographies on patients nearing the end of their lives. The biographies are given to the patients, who are able to read weekly drafts, and shared amongst the family giving them a full life tale, including some of the subject’s most personal secrets that some family members didn’t even know about. Dorothy – who just completed her 50th biography, which was on terminally ill Richmond man Murray Hanna – is clearly passionate about volunteering, having done so for the past 25 years, but she admits the life story writing is particularly special, phoning up as a complete stranger, and finding out everything about someone’s life. “At the first interview you find that they don’t know what to talk about,” Dorothy explains. “Then suddenly they look at photographs and it brings back all these lovely memories and you get all these wonderful stories coming out of it.” The process is beneficial to the patient, as the conversation and recollection is therapeutic, but it also gives family members a chance to hear stories that

I never knew that.’ I just tell them ‘well they just talked’.” With families living further apart, sometimes in different cities or even countries, Dorothy admits it can be easy for stories to go untold. She also says sometimes the stories were meant to be kept secret until now. The questions are simple, but the answers are often very detailed. Topics such as ‘what was your refrigerator like?’ even appear during the interview process, which

What were their names? … and it goes on from there.” Dorothy described the biography, which is given to the patient wrapped up like a birthday present, as “valuable” and she hopes to keep writing them, even if she has to be wheel chaired out to visit. “You feel very humbled and I just get so much satisfaction knowing that I’m helping somebody. Thinking about selling? Talk to Marty Kain If you’ve been considering putting your home on the market, then you need to talk to Marty. He currently has a long list of buyers who are searching for their perfect home, with a shortage of properties on the market to meet the demand. So if you live in Stoke, Tahunanui or Nelson City and your property is placed within $300,000 to $500,000, then give him a call today. Why list your property with Marty? At the young age of 25, Marty has already proven himself in the real estate industry through his consistent achievements and outstanding results. As a bright, tech savvy professional, Marty prides himself on communicating with his clients through a range of methods. Through email, online, phone or in person, Marty is available anywhere, anytime, making the process as convenient as possible. Marty has done the hard yards and earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Valuation and Property Management, which adds value to his customers real estate experience. His determination and solid work ethic means he is well and truly chasing his goal of becoming the number one agent for the Nelson region, with recent successes including

an outstanding four sales in one day, totalling almost $2 million. Why is he so successful? Marty says there is no secret formula to his success, with good old fashioned hard work getting him to where he is today. First to arrive at the Harcourts office in the morning and the last to leave at night, Marty says his natural enthusiasm and drive to succeed is the reason he achieves such great results for his vendors. “There is no magic skill that sets me apart from the crowd. My consistent success is down to the fact that every day I go out and work harder than everyone else.” Marty’s passion and competitive edge doesn’t stop at real estate, it rubs off onto every challenge he undertakes including in his role as a professional cricket player for Central Districts. Marty’s business continues to thrive, and with a growing number of clients on his database, he’s proud to have recently added Lydia Walterfang to his team, a great asset to his ever growing business. Tahuna residents will have the pick of the crop come harvest time after a local gardening group planted a community orchard in Centennial Park last week. Gardening group coordinator Jo Lavington says the project was a joint venture with local group Please Plant Me, and was aimed at making fresh fruit available to the community. A group of 25 people armed with shovels, came along from the gardening group to help plant 17 apple, fejioa, fig, citrus and pear trees on the site last Wednesday. Jo says planting Tahuna's first community orchard was a rewarding experience and she hopes local families will make the most of it and help themselves. “It's a really great thing for the community, it's there for everybody to enjoy healthy and free food on their back doorstep.” She says while the onus was on the community to help maintain and look after the orchard, the gardening group had already shown a keen interest in keeping things looked after. "The group are all keen gardners with a lot of knowledge on how to look after the trees, so they are all more than happy

With a stony terrain and wet weather to contend with on planting day, Jo says a special thank-you is in order for Bunnings who not only donated eight trees to the initiative but also helped the group dig the holes. "We do really want to thank Bunnings and everyone who

came along on the day to help us out. They well and truly stumped up to the task - excuse the pun." Trees were also donated by Please Plant Me and the Tahunanui Community Centre. The community can expect to enjoy the fruits of the group's labour when the trees come into season over the next few years.

Love Your

Pet

Hole Diggers Dog Spa "Hi I'm Lauryce, for many years I have had an overwhelming compassion & love for animals, their care and the quality of their lifestyles. I want them to feel loved and give them everything possible just to see their waggy tails go mad!!" I have qualifications in both pet care and animal behaviour. My passion for animals and thirst for knowledge continues to grow with completion of animal

Reiki - therapy that helps healing via the animal's body energy and dogs respond amazingly to this. Animals are my world, they enrich my life with all the trust they give, in return asking only for trust, care and loving treatment. They are the best!! I would love to hear from you & give your dog a beautiful massage spa treatment and make them feel totally pampered. Please don't hesitate to call 544 2186 or text 027 345 6392.

DOGGY DAYCARE Would you like a happy contented dog? Doggy Daycare is a place that allows your dog to be social, interact and exercise with other dogs in a supervised environment. Our handlers Leanne and Steph will treat your best friend like a member of their family. They will make sure that your dog has fun and gets to play while also being mentally stimulated throughout the day. If that sounds like you then call (03) 542-3856, we run on Tuesday and Thursday from 7.30am to 6pm and are in Clover Road East, Hope.

Full bathing and grooming service available DOGGY DAYCARE helps support The Nelson ARK and it’s programmes

Doggy Daycare We would highly recommend Doggy Daycare to anyone with a canine companion (or two)! Our two furkids attend Doggy Daycare once a week and now wait at the door every Thursday morning very early eagerly awaiting to go. When we pick them up at the end of the day they are exhausted. They sleep right through to the following night. Doggy Daycare is great value for money as not only do the furkids come home tired and happy after a funfilled day at daycare they also get valuable socialisation with other dogs and other humans too. Our two are noticeably more relaxed and approachable with other dogs since attending Doggy Daycare.

They get to socialise with dogs of all types, sizes and temperaments, so know how to handle themselves when out and about. Steph and Leanne are amazing. We feel more than comfortable leaving our furkids with them for the day knowing that they are going to be safe and well taken

care off. Our furkids love them. They clearly both love dogs and enjoy their canine playtime on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If I could I would spend the day there myself as it looks like so much fun! I can’t recommend Doggy Daycare enough!

To have a dog that responds to what you ask (most of the time) and can settle down at home doesn’t just happen! You must teach him what to do – and I encourage the use of positive reinforcement to do so. There are so many benefits of training your dog: the positive interaction of training increases the bond between you, training is tiring for your dog! And overall your dog will respond better to what you ask of him. Group classes are fun and a great motivator to interact with

bASkETbAll: Nelson’s Jess Bygate is one of seven new caps in the New Zealand Tall Ferns roster as they take on the Australia Opals at the FIBA Oceania Championships this week. Jess, who currently studies at Dickinson State University in the United States, could make her debut in Wednesday night’s tournament opener at the North Shore Events Centre.

Running out onto Trafalgar Park with a blue rugby jersey embedded with a red gryphon on your chest still holds plenty of importance for the latest crop of Nelson Bays players. Hearing mid week speeches from former Nelson Bays legends like Kahu Marfell and John Goodman and pulling the gryphon with their hands when they score a try, player-coach Daniel Perrin says the 2013 squad is still proud to represent Nelson, even if the Tasman Makos are deemed to be the elite team from the region. Without a full season competition, Nelson Bays was given the assignment of a Seddon Shield defence against Marlborough. By beating the Red Devils, Nelson were then booked in to face Lochore Cup champions Buller, who were swept away 42-15. The win means Nelson Bays players will get one more match before putting their feet up for the season, this time against West Coast at Trafalgar Park on Saturday. When comparing the Nelson Bays side that famously won the NPC second division to the team of today, which is made of up of the best club rugby players that didn’t gain Makos contracts, it’s easy to note plenty of differences. But Daniel says the pride is still the same, and that could be what is spurring the

Kaka Shield alive and kicking after 90 years The visiting team has won the Kaka Shield yet again – but under an unwritten rule, they kind of have to. Once played as a competitive rugby match between Tui and Sherry Valley in 1923, the most recent format of the Kaka Shield was contested on Sunday with the visiting Richmond side beating Tapawera 6-3. Two tries were scored by Richmond, who were made up of former and current Waimea Old Boys club members, meaning the “most valuable shield in New Zealand rugby” will be coming back to the Star & Garter. Although the initial game was played under the 1923 rugby rules, Sunday’s game was nearly the opposite. The nine a-side fixture saw women and men play on the same field, gumboots and sneakers re-

Nelson's Ben in the hunt for rally title Nelson’s Ben Hunt has taken the slenderest of leads in the National Rally Championship after finishing second on the Canterbury Rally today in his Subaru WRX STI. Going into the last stage in the Ashley Forest near Rangiora, Ben was lying third overall and it looked as if Masterton’s Richard Mason would win the event in his Subaru WRX STI. But Richard’s car punctured a left front tyre near the start of the 13.74 kms stage. Mason and co-driver wife Sara continued through the stage rather than stopping for a time consuming wheel change. However two kms from the end of the stage they had to stop and change the offending wheel, ultimately losing nearly seven minutes. The 20 seconds lead they had over Chris West evaporated and they finished fifth overall nearly six and a half minutes behind. Christchurch’s Chris won the event

by 55 seconds from Hunt, with Matt Jansen (Christchurch) in another Subaru WRX STI third overall. Ben has taken over the lead in the series from Geraldine’s Haydon Paddon, who is now in Europe, competing in rounds of the World Rally Championship. Ben now leads Paddon by just a single point with two rounds remaining, with Chris moving up to third and Richard dropping to fourth. This is Ben’s first season driving an outright contender turbocharged 4WD car. Until now he has only ever competed in class winning front wheel drive cars. He won the previous round of the series, the Manawatu Daybreaker event, his first ever rally win. The remaining rounds of the championship are the Pukekohe based Possum Bourne Memorial event on 7 September and the Rally of Wairarapa on 5 October.

placed rugby boots, drinks breaks included scooping a glass of beer from a stainless steel bucket sat next to a keg, and short line-outs were literally that, with players kneeling as the ball was thrown in. No one on the sideline seemed to know when the ‘new rules’ came into play, when Richmond and Tapawera took over from Tui and Sherry Valley or even why the game was even played. Ron Fenemor, a former Kaka Shield trustee, believed the social aspect occurred in the 70s, around the time of the 50th jubilee. While most people were short on details, he did know one thing. “It’s more valuable than the Ranfurly Shield,” he says, about the trophy which contains sovereigns, half sovereigns and nuggets of gold.

Rival too good for Waimea College Carol Cook

Netball Reporter editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz

There were plenty of complaints at the breaks at Saxton Courts on Saturday when players struggled with the unaccustomed sun and heat. The rumblings were wasted on supporters and yours truly as everyone relished a pleasant day. In the Grade 1 game Rival Cougars took the court, firing on all cylinders and were soon up 10-5 against Waimea College B. While Rival’s shooters Kelly Jenkins and Renee Bouzaid were confidence personified as they were supplied an abundance of quality ball from feeders Dana Weir and Lisa Thompson the college shooters appeared hesitant to put the shot up. Rival’s wing defence Jasmin Price had an outstanding opening quarter as she grabbed intercepts and used her extremely long reach to her advantage as she pressured the ball going into Waimea’s offensive third. Rival increased their lead to 19-11 at the major break. Waimea had numerous posi-

Rival increased their lead to 28-16 with one quarter to go. Waimea left their best until last when all seven bibs were changed. The girls settled quickly into to their new positions to outscore Rival 6-5. Premier grade preview: The penultimate round will be played at Nelson College for Girls on Thursday night. Prices Pharmacy A will be buoyed by last week’s strong perfor-

mance against Richmond when they take on Waimea College. Waimea should take the game as they have several options through court with Gracie Roberts offering another shooting option. Stoke NBS claimed a one goal victory in round two against Prices Pharmacy Black after being 11 down so without a doubt Prices will be keen to turn the tables. On paper Jacks OPD should have it over Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro however if Jacks don’t hit the ground running Richmond could catch them napping.

Boxer prepares for European bouts

The Harbour Master’s

diary

Andrew Board

• Five container vessels including one general carrier, the departure of a log ship, and eighteen fishing vessel movements around the port kept the port busy during the last week. • If you thought your mooring was foolproof you forgot to tell Huey the Wind God. Well he probably isn’t really but it’s a common term used by blow boaters. You know those long skinny things that put sails that look like sheets up the big sticks. Anyway this time it was a vessel with an iron mainsail (big engine) that literally sailed up the Boulder Bank in the 40 knot South Wester of recent times. • It finally ran aground in time for the Port staff to get to it and anchor it again until it could be retrieved. • The point here is that this vessel had legitimately been on a legal mooring and the power of the wind and sea combined chafed the mooring line until it broke. The moral of the story is that if you know strong winds are coming, and spring is just around the corner , ensure you mooring lines are safe from chafe and in good condition. Double up the bridle if you think it is necessary.

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz Natalie Stuart always wanted to make a splash on the international stage but she thought it would be in a rowing boat, not a boxing ring. The talented 22 year old was preparing for the national rowing trials when an injury forced her out of the trials and the sport. Naturally competitive, she cast her eyes towards a new sport and strapped on some boxing gloves to keep her fit in the meantime. It didn't take long for those fitness sessions to turn into a new passion. "I really enjoyed it and almost straight away I started training for a fight," she says. Her coach, Alan Dickey, saw potential in the novice and in no time she racked up a 9-0 record. "My first fight I thought 'what am I doing here? I can't believe I'm actually doing it' and I just bounced around as much as I could so I wouldn't get hit." She went on to win that bout and the next eight until she met the Australian champion, who gave her the first taste of defeat. Her second and last loss was to the New Zealand champion at nationals last year. Natalie says she doesn't want a third loss and will head to this year's nationals as the top ranked fighter in her class after the previous champion moved divisions. That means Natalie is top ranked figher in her division so she has been selected to travel to Poland and Germany for a national camp and tournament with New Zealand's other top fighters. She says she isn't expecting too much from her time in Europe, other than to learn. "I've had 13

Natalie's ultimate goal is to represent New Zealand at the 2016 Olympics. On the way she wants to win nationals this year and push for a Commonwealth Games spot next year, althought that won't be easy as her weight divison isn't represented at the games so she will have to fight up a class.

She says she wants to make a good go of the sport. "I'm really driven to do well and I really enjoy the training. I don't enjoy getting hit but I've got a great coach and my defence is pretty good." Natalie says she needs to raise $5000 for the trip to Germany and Poland next month and any sponsorship would be grateful. To get in touch with Natalie email nattie-stu@hotmail.com.
