Principal slams govt plan for charter schools Jonathan McKeown The head of the region’s oldest college says he is thrilled with progress on its new trade centre but has slammed the government for not attempting to replicate it for other regions. Nelson College headmaster Gary O’Shea says that John Banks and John Key should take a look at the new Gibbons Trade Education Centre at his school before they launch into funding charter schools, which they proposed a fortnight ago. “I don’t actually think Act or National has given any real thought to the research on charter schools. There are better ways to use money than to just sort of have this vague

concept of charter schools. I think the motivation for the announcement without the fine detail is naive,” he told Nelson Weekly this week. Gary says technically Nelson College could become a charter school, but he warns that schools have to be careful about how businesses get involved and that they remain “junior partners”. The government didn’t come to the party with any funding for the new $1.5 million dollar Trade and Automotive Centre at Nelson College, which is due for completion in February next year. Gary says with a clear educational vision, and

Santa comes to town... finally Worried children watching the weather forecast for Sunday needn’t have worried – Santa wasn’t going to let rain ruin his parade two weeks in a row. The Nelson City Santa Parade was cancelled last week due to heavy rain and the same was predicted for Sunday. But the sun shone, the families were out in their thousands and Santa took his rightful

position as the main attraction in the parade. Organiser Huup Waagen says he is thrilled the weather held off and the parade went ahead. “About ten floats pulled out but numbers were about the same as last year, maybe down just a bit. It’s hard to say but I’d say we had about 10,000 people there,” he says. Prizes were handed out to the best

floats but Huup held special praise for the Purple Cake Day float, which added plenty of colour to the parade. He says postponing the event due to rain last week did affect it but he liked the later date. “I think people were more in the Christmas spirit and perhaps we should look at moving it to that date for next year.”

Opera canned for next year After bearing the brunt of funding for this year’s Opera in the Park, Nelson City Council has annoucned it will not repeat the exercise next year. Following the loss of sponsorship, NCC fronted up to ensure February’s event went ahead, but has decided not to do so again in 2012. It has not shut the door on the event though, saying it may become a biennial event. Community Services co-portfolio holder Ali Boswijk says council cannot continue to fund the event on an annual basis. “Opera in the Park is much loved community event and a fitting finale of the Summer in Nelson programme. But we have to be mindful of the cost to ratepayers. It was a difficult decision, but we felt moving Opera in the Park to every second year would be more financially responsible,” she says.

Principal: Trade school is the way forward FROM PAGE 1 the support of local businesses and a community that bought into that vision, Nelson College will open “the best school facility in the Southern Hemisphere” for trades. “It’s bold, there’s nothing really like it in the country and nothing like it in the Southern Hemisphere,” he says. The project involves more than 30 businesses and Nelson City Council. It will house state-of-the art facilities, tools and training space for at least 400 students. He says the collaboration is a sign of the future, where business can be involved in a positive way. One of the contentious issues associated with charter schools, Gary says, is that teachers don’t have to be qualified. “You can throw a lot of money at great buildings but if you don’t have quality teachers you don’t get the results for the students. The reality is that this wouldn’t happen,

and I wouldn’t be forcing through the vision if I didn’t have great staff,” he says. In classrooms and workshops, the donors will have their products, industry standard tools and equipment available for use, and businesses will mentor students in the community through work experience. The benefit for businesses is the trade centre will deliver well trained workers back to the local economy. Nelson College already has the data to support the claim of a successful trade programme with a pass rate of above 80 per cent and a retention rate from Year 11 of about the same through its trades programme. “They’re not out there making cups of tea on a building site. They are contributing and learning while still doing core subjects at school,” says Gary. “It’s redefining what education means. I can’t see a downside at all in what we are doing.”

Search for Nelson’s best love story As a jeweller, Halfdan Hansen says he has heard plenty of proposal stories from loved-up couples, now he is searching for the ultimate love story. Jens Hansen Jewellers and the Nelson Wedding Show, are running a promotion to find the regions best love story and reward the winners with diamonds.

So far more than a dozen entries have been submitted featuring love at first sight, childhood sweethearts and a few out of the ordinary says Halfdan. “Sometimes people have very romantic proposals, or perhaps their meeting was romantic, or how they live their lives together is amazing – whatever the story, we would love to hear it, and

would love to share it. From my experience, Nelsonians are pretty romantic, so hopefully we’ll get to hear some great stories.” Jenny Walton from the Nelson Wedding Show also loved the idea of a Love Stories campaign, to build on this year’s Wedding Show’s romantic proposal competition. So a plan was hatched to run the Jens Hansen Love Stories competition in partnership with the Nelson Wedding Show – a competition to find Nelson’s nine most romantic stories, and then the ultimate love story. “We were keen for the Nelson Wedding Show to offer people real inspiration and something positive and fun and who doesn’t want the chance to win Jens Hansen diamonds. I am looking forward to reading all the stories people submit - I am sure it will be hard to judge the top nine, but then it will be up to the public to choose the ultimate story at the Nelson Wedding Show in May.” People have until January 14 to submit their story through the Jens Hansen website Jeweller Halfdan Hansen, along with organisers of the Nelson Wedding Show, are looking for Nel- www.jenshansen.com. Each of the nine finalists son’s best love story. Photo: Andrew Board. will win $600 worth of diamonds, and the ultimate love story will win an additional $1000 worth of diamonds.

NEWS IN BRIEF MAORI WARD DISCUSSION: Nelson City Council is to discuss a legal opinion regarding the creation of a Maori ward in the public session of its meeting next week. A Nelson resident raised issues of the legality of the move in the public forum section of a recent meeting and council subsequently committed to seek independent legal advice. The resident, a lawyer, said at the meeting that he thought council breached the Local Electoral Act 2001 and the Local Government Act 2002. The independent legal advice has now been received and will be discussed at the final council meeting of the year next Thursday 15 December at 9am in the Council Chamber. NEW WAKA: The Maitahi Waka Club launched its new waka on Tahunanui Beach Sunday morning. The sixperson boat was formally named and blessed on the beach. SHINING ON CAROLS EVENT: St Barnabas Church will be rocking to the sounds of the 2011 Rockquest winners The Peasants on Friday night, part of an expanded annual Carols on the Lawn event called Shine. The concert will be held on the front lawn of St Barnabas Church. As well as music, there is plenty of kids entertainment. It’s being held on Friday 16 December between 5pm – 9pm at St Barnabas, 523 Main Rd Stoke.

Cashing in on Christmas Cycle thefts prompt police action Four Nelson business people have joined forces to open a new "pop up shop" in central Nelson in the hope of a Christmas rush. Anna Shone designs and makes her own range of clothing and sells them at the Nelson Market on Saturday mornings. She says the idea of opening a pop up shop in the weeks leading up to Christmas only occurred about two weeks ago. She asked around other stall holders that she thought would fit well with her range, whether they would be keen to share costs and time manning the store. "It all happened very quickly but it's worked out well. The days my kids are at preschool Katie's aren't, and vice-versa, so we can take turns running the shop," says Anna. The pair, who both make clothes, have also brought in a wooden giftware range, leather bags, jewellery and retro wallets. All are made locally. Anna says the shop will be open seven days until Christmas Eve.

Nelson police will be stopping cyclists for the month of December in an effort to crack down on bicycle thefts. Police say a spike in the number of bicycle thefts, including those taken while people have been riding them, has prompted the operation. The thefts have been all over the Nelson region, says Sergeant Dave Prentice, and police will take the opportunity to promote a safe cycling campaign. "We've had some issues recently around people getting stopped, threatened, and their bikes taken off them, so we will be doing random stops throughout the region to ensure bikes aren't stolen and we are taking the opportunity to give out some safety advice at the same time." He says there has been "a noticeable increase of incidents” in the past few weeks and they are not confined

to one area. "It seems to be all over the region and in some cases children have had their bikes stolen on the way home from school." The operation started last week and will run for the month of December at least, says Dave. Safety checks include making sure people are wearing bike helmets at all times and lights in the hours of darkness. Dave says if anyone has their bike stolen to call police immediately and report it. "If we hear about it right away we are in a much better position to recover the stolen property and catch the offender." He says not to try and fight off the attackers. "We don't want anyone to put themselves in harm’s way so if there is any danger then walk away from it and call us right away."

MERRY CHRISTMAS: Katie Bennett, left, and Anna Shone in a new "pop up shop" they have opened on Hardy St until Christmas Eve. The pair have joined other stall-holders from the Nelson Market to open the shop. Photo: Andrew Board.

The almighty pen ence of ink and parchment. The Nelson petitioners were given six cases including one where they directly wrote North Korean dictator, Chairman Kim Jong-il. The Yodok Political Prison Camp in North Korea holds prisoners of conscience and their relatives without trial on the basis of “guilt-by-association.” One of the organisers of the Nelson effort, Mathew Hay, believes that Nelsonians generally have a “conscience” about this sort of thing, and are more than willing to help out if asked. “I think it’s because we come from such a wonderful place to live, we know how good life can be,” says Mathew.

On track for biggest ever Shop ‘n’ Win

Shop ‘n’ Win has been out of control with entry numbers already exceeding 40,000. A number of retailers have noticed a bigger popularity with the competition this year, as the money on offer has rose to $5000. Shop ‘n’ Win gives customers at selected Richmond retailers a chance to enter into the $5000 cash prize draw, with any purchase. Lynley Tainui of Westmeat says the response has been huge for 2011. “People are really keen, I mean it is $5000 and who wouldn’t want that for Christmas?” she says. “There’s definitely a lot more this year. Everyone is entering. Everyone wants to win.” Westmeat has been in the competition since its inception and Lynley says it gives the business a better relationship with its customers. “Wouldn’t it be nice if one of our customers won it? It’d be awesome.” Shop ‘n’ Win runs until December 22, and winners will be announced in the Nelson Weekly holiday issue. Retailers also have a chance to win $1500.

Dancer pushes through fatigue to gain spot at prestigious school Jessica Roden The biggest dream of her life so far is coming true for tenacious performer Raffaella Cheruso, who has been accepted into a prestigious performing arts school in Australia next year, after battling sickness. The ex Nayland College dancer, singer and actress was forced to take a gap year after she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia in 2010. Being unable to dance for a year was emotionally quite tough, says Raffaella. “It was really different for me because my life had always been centred around dancing.” Before she became sick Raffaella and her mother visited dance schools in Australia and from then she knew it was her dream to attend one. “Nothing at Uni appealed to me at all and I was like ‘shivers, there’s nothing else I could see myself doing that would make me happy’.” After spending many months on the sickness benefit, she says that she used 2011 to rest her body and slowly build up her strength and technique again. She says that not being able to

dance or do basic everyday tasks such as standing for long periods of time was hard. She also battled some uncertainty early on that she would be healthy enough to dance at the top level. It was a surprise to Raffaella when she was accepted into all five performing arts schools that she applied to. She says she originally just wanted to know that she had given it a shot. In terms of the future, Raffaella says in performing it’s hard to have a goal. “It’s not a career you can plan ahead with”. She does say that short-term she would love to perform and long-term she can see herself choreographing and teaching. She has chosen to attend Jason Coleman’s Ministry of Dance in Melbourne next year because of its reputation, location and facilities. Her mother originally enrolled Raffaella in ballet lessons at the age of four because she wanted her daughter to have good posture. Raffaella is now a trained ballet, jazz, contemporary and hip-hop dancer and will next year follow a dream that was born when she was just four years old. Nelson dancer Raffaella Cheruso has fought back from chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia to earn a spot at an Australian dance school. Photo: Jessica Roden.

KEEP ON CALLING: Ben Alder, the Nayland College school leaver who created a labouring business for one of his friends, has received a flood of jobs from local residents following an article in the Nelson Weekly. Ben and his two friends Mitchell Ross and Alex Davies have had to bring more workers into the business to help keep up with demand; last week alone they received more than 30 calls for work. Lantern walk to honour past organiser A commemorative gateway in honour of Kim Merry will highlight the Nelson Lantern Celebration, an event he organised for eight years. The lantern walk up the Centre of New Zealand hill, starting from the Botanical Reserve this Saturday night, has launched the Nelson City Council programme of summer events for many years, and used to be organised by popular arts champion, Kim. The Lantern Celebration was started in 1993 by Greg Olsen, Penny Wright and Annabel Norman, and taken over by Kim in 2001. Kim died in August 2009, and Nelson City Council festivals director Sophie Kelly says after much talk about how he could be commemorated, it was decided to install two totems at the foot of the Centre of New Zealand walkway. “Kim was such an innovator in community events in this city – he instigated the Masked Parade and developed the Lantern Celebration, and we think this is a really fitting tribute to all the work he did and to the sense of fun that he brought to these special events,” she says. This year the theme for the Lantern Celebration is Creatures of the Night, with all kinds of creatures, installations and music waiting to surprise, enchant and possibly scare just a little as walkers wend their way up the hill. Nelson City Brass will be playing at the Botanics where activities will start from 6pm. Festivities will wrap up at 10pm.

Cadets off to defend national title Cadets don’t care much for excuses, so when Staff Sergeant David West says the Nelson team that will travel to Ohakea Air Base in search of a third consecutive national title this week is a “young team”, he speaks of the advantages they will gain. The Nelson unit has won the last two national “Skill at Arms” competitions, a rigorous evaluation of the training they

receive as part of the New Zealand Cadet Core. It is a competition that essentially tests all of the skills learned during the first six weeks of basic training, covering shooting, physical abilities, navigation and theory tests amongst other skills. It involves units from all over the country. The Unit leaves for RNZAF Base Ohakea tomorrow which is situated 25 km north west of Palmerston North and they are

determined to bring home the hat-trick of titles. “Physically we are quite small and quite young, but we are very fit. Fit and smart and those are the things that make the difference,” says David. The team had one last hit out at the old Army confidence course at Tahunanui on Sunday and hope it was enough to sharpen their skills ahead of the competition.

Christmas fever grips Nelson Christmas fever is definitely here. Two weeks before the big day Nelson hosted several major Christmas events to celebrate the holiday. On Sunday the Nelson City Santa Pa-

rade was held on Trafalgar St, followed by the Christmas Carnival at Founders Heritage Park. Also at Founders was the Toy Fair and later that day the Carols at Gardens of the World were held

in Hope. All of the events enjoyed a huge turn out and Nelson Weekly photographers were on hand to capture the action. For more photos visit our Facebook page.

The Harbour Master’s

diary

• Four large container ships, fifteen large fishing vessel movements, a car carrier, a methanol tanker and a fuel tanker, a cement ship, a large yacht, all kept the port busy this week. • It was with some anxiety that I visited the local marina a few times this week. In particular I was concerned about the behaviour I would witness at the launch ramp. Pleasantly surprised, I witnessed the majority of responsible boaties doing the right thing. What is the right thing? The NCC Marina By law 195 states in relation to “Operation of vessels in marina” that: 1) No person shall operate in the Marina a vessel of which causes excessive noise 2) No person shall cause excessive noise by accelerating or racing the engine of a vessels while the same is stationary 3) No person who is under the age of 15 years shall operate or navigate a vessel within the marina 4) No person shall operate or navigate a vessel within the marina at a speed exceeding 5knots in the main channel or 3knots elsewhere 5) Every person who operates or navigates a vessel within the marina shall, as far as is practicable, do so at such a speed that waves caused by the movement of the vessel through the water do not break against the shore or against any structure within the Marina. Essentially I read this as making the marina a no-wake zone. I am sure you would agree. If in doubt – don’t go out Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

LETTERS

TO THE EDITOR

Mayor Aldo Miccio’s letter published in the Nelson Weekly (Dec. 6) mentions a 3.5 per cent rate increase for Nelson during the current year. While there are some properties which had such a low increase, many have not. My rates increased eight and a half percent this year, and have increased 70 per cent over the last five years -- five times the inflation rate. For many ratepayers on low or fixed incomes, this sort of increase is not sustainable. Nelson council prides itself on sustainability. But it is concerning that where financial management is concerned, sustainability is being overlooked. Very big rate increases are in the pipeline which are going to tip some people out of their homes, and cause businesses in central Nelson to fail. In the current economic environment council is going to have to sharply curtail spending. It is amazing that councillors and staff have not yet woken up to this. Dan McGuire, Nelson.

Gr wing Things

With Robyn Hollis

Where has the year gone? I am sure this is the catch cry for so many of us, as this is the last column before Christmas. I thought I would talk a bit about roses this time as several neighbours have been asking questions regarding deadheading, feeding etc. The photo this week is of my bed of Margaret Merrill floribunda roses (with the odd Iceberg and Avalanche popped in as fillers). This was of course taken before the latest round of strong winds and rain got to them – always seems to happen just as they are at their blooming best! My advice on how to keep them looking good is quite simple… feed, water (not a problem lately!) mulch and spray. Also, when deadheading, don’t just snip off the dead flowers at the top. For hybrid tea roses cut back to the first set of 5 leaves and angle the cut as in pruning. For floribunda roses you can take out the oldest rose in a clump but then, as the others bloom the same rule applies. This encourages more new shoots and hopefully flowers, and also helps keep your bushes growing more evenly. This means that at the end of the season you do not have to deal to a huge and messy rose when pruning time comes. I recently had the pleasure of judging the cut flowers, succulents and potted plants at the Nelson Horticultural Societies exhibit at the Richmond A&P show. This was really rewarding and another learning curve for me. What a range of really beautiful specimens there were, with a huge range of flowers to choose from. It was a daunting task I can tell you, but I must have handled things OK as they have asked me back again in January!

Tips

Thisks wee

Things to keep doing over the next few weeks. • Strawberries should be ripening now – watch for grey mould (botrytis) especially after all the rain we have had. Lift plants off the ground by putting pea straw or barley straw under them. Clean out any mouldy fruit as humidity encourages this disease. Put bird netting

over them; tunnels are good for this – check with your garden centre about these – or make a frame with wire and build your own. • Hanging baskets (Nelsons ones look superb!) need plenty of water at this time of year and also lots of liquid feed. Thrive, Seasol mixed with Power feed, nitrosol or any seaweed based fertiliser is good here. You can also pack Spagnum moss around the top of your plants to help hold in moisture. It contains a natural antiseptic so helps prevent disease as well. • Lift tulips when the leaves have yellowed off. Clean soil off the bulbs, leaves and roots and pop them into a netting bag. Dust with flowers of sulphur and leave them to hang in a cool dry place. Throw away any that feel a bit soft or that have odd blemishes on them. • Keep weeding – after this rain they, along with most things in the vege garden, will bolt and start setting seed heads. Great old saying still applies today “one years weeding stops another years seeding…” I will talk about weed sprays next time – there are alternatives out there.

Q& A Kerry and Tina put their heads together and came up with several queries so I will do my best to get this all in for you. Q: How do we get rid of Ivy and Wandering Jew invading our property from next door? A: This stuff is a menace. The Convolvulous cure I mentioned the other week could work on the Wandering Jew, but I would use Amitrole instead of Roundup. Please be careful when using and do not let it touch other loved plants. Another idea to try for the Ivy, with the same warning, is Vigilant Gel. Trace the Ivy to a

Tidy up before Xmas. Call us.

fairly thick stem (I know – there will be many!). Cut the base of the stem and use the gel as per the instructions. You will have to do this several times along the plant and if you are on good terms with the neighbour it may pay to go and find the source on their side also. This will carry the poison back to the roots and in time it should kill the plant. It will also kill any other plant it touches so use with caution! Q: How to fight the war on Green Shield Bugs – what to use and when to use it? A: You need to get these when they are at the red/black baby stage if possible. Spray with Natures Way Insect killer, Mavrick, Beat a Bug or if all else fails use Confidor as a systemic spray. Personally I do not like spraying veges at all. You could squash these bugs in a mortar and pestle and make a solution from the paste (yes, it will stink!) try spraying that onto the plants as a deterrent. They should then drop off and you can squash at your leisure! Companion planting with Nasturtiums and Tansy can help repel pests also. I have not really gone into companion planting as it is a huge topic, but if you are interested in giving someone (or yourself) a Christmas gift, go to Page and Blackmores and ask them to order in a book called “Roses love Garlic”. It is written by Lousie Riotte and is one of the most interesting and informative books I own. Happy Gardening,

Robyn

Local people with local knowledge Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory. As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born. Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens showroom in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.

When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen. Ask our friendly staff for details.

Cookes and Gourock are not disappearing, and they’ve not been taken over. Fact is, there’s another name with just as strong a heritage, that has owned both brands and been operating in New Zealand for many years already – Bridon. But because, as Bridon, we’ve been a tad backward in coming forward you’ve simply known us over the years as Cookes or Gourock. Why the focus on Bridon? Because Bridon NZ is part of Bridon International – the world leader in wire rope with operations in more than 20 countries and responsible for much of the world’s innovation and advancements in wire rope technology. And because from now on, you’re going to see a lot more ofUSus as Bridon, withELECTRICS a higher standard altoCALL TO CALL US TO SORT SORT YOUR YOUR BOAT BOAT ELECTRICS

SPORT Softball legend still going strong The United Titans hadn’t won a game in two years – cue three time world champion and Black Sox pitching legend Marty Grant. Now the Senior Men’s softball side are on a three-game winning streak. Marty retired from international competition in 2009 but kept his hand in New Zealand softball through coaching and mentoring. This year he dusted off the glove to play in the Nelson competition with his brother for the first time since their days at Waimea College 30 years ago. “I came to this team just wanting to be a part of it, the guys accepted me and without expecting too much. We’ve been able to learn and have some fun,” says Marty. Marty’s career with the Black Sox was exceptional; at the world championship 2000 in South Africa he pitched a nohitter in the final to win a second world title. But the humble champion, widely regarded as one the best pitchers we have produced, says he started out as a pretty average athlete. “It’s interesting because I was just an average athlete, but I trained a lot harder than anyone. So there are a whole bunch of kids out there that have a chance to play for New Zealand if they are willing to put the work in,” he says.

IN BRIEF bowlS: Nelson lawn bowlers Jo Edwards and Val Smith teamed up to win gold at the Asia Pacific Championships in Adelaide over the weekend. The pair, ranked number 1 and 3 in the world, won the Women’s Pairs Final over the Philippines.

Three-time world champion softball pitcher Marty Grant is back on the diamond playing for the Nelson Titans at Saxton Field. Photo: Jonathan McKeown. Marty believes he has a responsibility to the players of the future to stay involved with softball and be enthusiastic, and he hopes some of that will rub off on the current crop of players coming through the game. “I’ve had some of the best coaches in the world help me and I’ve

got to be able to pass that on, it would be unfair not to.” At the start of the month Marty was in Christchurch at the South Island’s Jefferies Cup scouting for players to fill slots in the Southern Pride representative side he coaches.

Nelson rowers are gearing up for their first major competition of the summer this weekend. The Marlborough Champs will see crews from Wellington, Timaru, Christchurch and the top of the south compete. The Nelson crews are expected to do well, with coach Rachel Arbuckle saying it will be a good measure early on in the season. “They’ve been training since September so it will be good to see where we are at.” The crews, ranging from 14 to 50 year-olds, train up to nine times a week and Rachel says it will be the last big event before Christmas. In the new year they will look to regain their rhythm with the South Island champs on at the end of January.

Nelson College for Girls student Rebecca Kersten has been selected for the Women’s Touch Blacks in preparation for the Trans Tasman Test Series in Mudgee, NSW, Australia in April 2012. crickET: First class cricket will be played in Nelson tomorrow, if the schdueled rain holds off. The Central Stags are due to play the Otago Volts at Saxton Oval on Wednesday in a Ford Trophy 50 over match. Play is due to start at 11am. fooTbAll: The Tasman Tigers womens football team played its first ever match on Sunday, losing 6-0 to national finalists, Mainland Pride. The Tigers, featuring players from Nelson and Marlborough, competed well considering it was the first time many of the players had taken the field together. The match was also the first ever football game to be played at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim. fooTbAll: After one year of action the region’s largest football club is now set to discuss its inaugural season and 2012, says it chairperson Martin Byrne.
