But the former Waimea College mountain biker, who was only nine years old when Lance Armstrong first won the Tour de France, says the sport has already moved beyond doping and anyone caught is now exiled by the rest of the peloton. In fact, George is just happy he was born in 1990 and not ten years earlier otherwise he could have been cycling when the sport was in its darkest stage. “I think it’s a great time to be a young cyclist. I think the sport is almost there. I can’t really comment or judge anyone from that previous generation because I wasn’t there but it sounded like there were problems,” says George. “In my time I have never come

across any doping and everything that is coming up happened a long time ago. I’d be naïve to think it’s 100 per cent clean but we’re all getting dragged under the same bus at the moment and it wears pretty thin.” The whereabouts programme affects every professional cyclist. George has to notify drug testing authorities of his whereabouts 365 days of the year. “If I went out camping I’d have to let them know, give them GPS coordinates or something.” He says while it is inconvenient, he is happy the system is in place. “Collectively, the whole mindset and attitude has changed. If a rider goes positive for EPO the rest of the peloton is just so furious. Hopefully once this is all over, people again see cycling for the incredible sport that it is.”

Nelson MP Nick Smith has laid a complaint with Nelson Police after a local woman was called by someone falsely claiming to be from Inland Revenue and requesting credit card details. Nick says he received a complaint from a retired Nelson woman who was phoned by someone claiming to be from the IRD, saying that the prime minister was giving a tax refund for people like herself who had no criminal record. She was asked to provide her credit card number to enable the

refund to be processed. Nick says it’s a cruel scam and the Government has no such programme and IRD does not operate in this way. “I was horrified that when we phoned the contact number, it was answered by a person with a foreign accent who again claimed they were from the IRD. People need to be very careful of such scams and not give out credit card details over the phone. I encourage anybody who has been subject to these sorts of scams to get as many details as possible and contact police.’’

Frozen Christmas

Making it easy to daylight your home with 3 easy payments

Ice skating rink coming to Tahunanui this summer Andrew Board Ice skating on Christmas Eve is usually reserved for those some distance north of the equator – not this year. Work on bringing a full-sized ice rink to Tahunanui this summer is on track and will open to the public in time for Christmas. Christchurch-based company Ice World has seven portable ice rinks in New Zealand and Australia and is bringing one to Nelson over the Christmas period, hoping to cash in on the extra holiday makers in the city. Extra power for the rinks will begin to be worked on within the next fortnight, says Ice World’s managing director Gareth Webber and construction on the rink will begin just four days before its grand opening on December 15. He says they are unsure how long it will be in Nelson as it will be due to demand. “If we’re getting good support then we will stay longer so we can’t really say at this stage when we will be pulling it out of Nelson.” Gareth says if the venture to Tahunanui is successful then they would “definitely consider” bringing it back next summer. The rinks are 525 square metres and have a giant marquee erected above them to stop the ice from melting in direct sunlight. The rink that will come to Nelson is currently in Christchurch’s Hagley Park. Gareth says the rinks were brought to New Zealand for the USA versus Canada ice hockey tour last winter and his company had made the most of them being in the country, taking them to many centres that have never had an ice skating rink before, like Nelson. “It’s just been a great opportunity to take them around to centres that have never had an ice

I mean we get that many people that come to the rinks and say they’ve never skated before so they are very grateful for the chance to do it. “Kids, teenagers and even the adults they really have a blast and it’s good value I think. It’s really satisfying for us,” he says. The rink is like a big car radiator, says Gareth. It’s a series of aluminium piping that covers the entire surface of the ground and then you pump antifreeze through the pipes and then pour water over top so the pipes get really cold and that freezes the water. It’s kept cold by a 600kilowatt refrigeration unit.

People now spending more

An extra $2.5 million was spent in Nelson this October compared with last year, according to the latest stats from eftpos provider Paymark. Last October, during the latter stages of the Rugby World Cup, Nelson saw 1.45 million eftpos transactions through the Paymark network. That was bettered this year with 1.48 million transactions during the same month. There was $74.3 million spent through the network, up 3.5 per cent on last year’s figures. Paymark processes more than 75 per cent of

all electronic transactions in the New Zealand retail market on behalf of more than 50 card issuers and acquirers. Uniquely Nelson manager Cathy Madigan says the increase has been noticed. “There’s definitely an uplift out there from a retailer perspective. There is a little more optimism, we are through the winter and looking to Christmas.” Cathy says the increase is impressive considering last October was during the world cup. “For us to grow again on that same month is pretty good.”

Olympic heroes help raise cash Andrew Board Olympic champions, a former Wallaby great and 430 Nelsonians helped raise a staggering $40,000 for the Haven Sports Trust last Friday night. The annual dinner was the first dinner function to be held at the brand new conference centre at the Rutherford Hotel and organiser Jeff Rackley says he was extremely happy with the night. “I thought the speakers were excellent and just bloody good people. The number of photographs I think the rowers appeared in is testament to how popular they were and Phil Kearns was just a lovely bloke.” MC John McBeth entertained the crowd and helped set the tone for former Wallaby hooker, turned rugby commentator, Phil Kearns who told tales of his infamous encounters with All Black hooker Sean Fitzpatrick. Olympic rowing champions Hamish Bond and Eric Murray were then interviewed by McBeth and the duo had the crowd in fits of laughter and were happy to mix and mingle with guests. Hamish told the crowd that he’d worked out how many practice strokes went into preparing for the Olympic final. “Over the four years we trained for it, we did 15,000 practice strokes for each stroke in the final. So the lead off stroke was practiced 15,000

Jeff says it’s a heck of a lot of work to put together but he’s happy the people of Nelson continue to support it. “We had a trip to the Chatham Is-

lands that went for $6250 and Outward Bound went for $5000 and $2900 for Brian Strong’s painting, which is really good.” The dinner is the major fundraiser for the trust, which also has four benefactors, Golden Edge, NBS, Rzoska Engineering Electrical Solutions and WHK.

Beaches get spring clean Your Community Newspaper

Sinead Ogilvie More than 4.5 tonnes of rubbish was picked up off Nelson and Tasman beaches on Saturday, with local businesses, clubs and families pitching in to clean up the region’s foreshore. Around 600 people took part in the spring clean, which spanned across 51 different beaches from Cable Bay to Marahau, and while the amount picked up was an improvement on last years 6.5 tonnes, there was still a huge amount of rubbish picked up by the groups says coordinator Janice Gravett. Bob Irvine and Pauline Farley from Dry Crust have participated in all three of the now annual clean ups, and say although they thought there was a lot less rubbish than last year, there was a large amount of plastics found, made up of supermarket bags and gladwrap. Pauline says they take part each year to raise awareness of the impact rubbish has on the environment. “I have seen birds get their heads stuck in plastic and swallowing

plastic, so I think it’s important that we stop littering and take responsibility for what ends up on our shoreline.” The Big Beach Clean Up is organised in partnership with the Department of Conservation, Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council, and Nelmac, with a rubbish drop off station manned by staff at Tahuna Beach. Conservation ranger Theo Chapman says it can be disheartening to see rubbish dropped on a daily basis, and commends the initiative that sees the community take an active role in caring for the environment. “We’ve got a beautiful coastline, and this event encourages people to get involved in looking after it.” The Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club travelled to Haulashore Island by waka ama, and picked up 15 bags of rubbish from the shores, most of which Pete Bywater says was bottles and tins. Across the region a collection of strange items were found, including bits of car, an old mattress and a bottle of marijuana.

Haven will be ‘busier than ever’ Nelson Haven is expected to be busier than ever this summer and the local harbour master is urging caution for those using it. Dave Duncan says the port area, extending to Tahunanui beach will be extremely busy. The increase in paddle boarders and kite surfers has made the area around the swimming beach more populated and a similar increase in power boat users has made the port area a hive of activity. That, coupled with an expected visit from two super yachts and two cruise ships and the normal traffic from cargo carriers and fishing boats means the port will be busier than ever. “It is getting busier and busier but it’s great to see people using the facilities and enjoying

the water and what we have to offer,” says Dave. Dave says there is good awareness by most users but anytime where you have kite surfers, swimmers, waka ama, kayakers, sailors, power boat users, cruise ships, fishing vessels, cargo ships and super yachts all using the same water there is potential for trouble. “Nationally we are considered to be a safe port, we have a great climate and boating facilities and the trend is for more and more boats to launch from Nelson. There are a lot of good reasons. The council is very aware of the growth and I’d like to see some facilities improve over the next few years but good things take time.”

All go for friendly road worker Road worker Gae Smith waves to cars as they go past her stop/go sign on Moana Ave. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. Motorists driving down Moana Ave on Friday got a pleasant surprise as they were passing through, with an enthusiastic road worker giving them the go ahead, along with a smile and a wave. At a traffic controlled roadworks site halfway down the street, ‘lollipop’ worker Gae Smith greeted vehicles with a cheery smile and a wave, and saw them off on their way, several of whom then called Nelson Weekly to say how much they enjoyed it. Local driver Michelle Collier says

she couldn’t believe the woman controlling the traffic was so pleasant, and says it made her day to recieve a huge smile on her way to work that morning. “I just loved her attitude, this woman was absolutely beaming at people, and the best thing was she gave people smiles even when she realised they didn’t have one.” Gae says she doesn’t think anything of offering people a friendly wave but says she’s aware it’s not the usual treatment you get from road

workers. “People say road workers always look grumpy, so I just give everybody a wave and a smile as they pass through.” The Allied Workforce employee says she enjoys her job, and waves and smiles at every car passing simply to be kind, and says not all drivers seem to appreciate it. “Not everybody waves back, and you can usually tell straight away if they are going to give you a wave or not, but if they don’t I still give them a smile and off they go.”

Police target speeders in Rai Valley Nelson police are clamping down on speeding drivers in Rai Valley. Highway patrol sergeant Terry Richards says a six month operation began last weekend involving high visibility policing of the stretch of SH6 between Rai Valley and Okaramio. Terry says the operation was prompted by a "high level of disregard" of the speed limit in the valley. He says it was not uncommon for drivers to be detected travelling in excess of 130kmh and in recent weeks two drivers had been clocked driving in excess of 140kmh on that stretch of highway. The operation will run from Saturday 11 November until the end of May 2013. In that time the police patrols will make themselves highly visible in the area, however there would also be covert speed detection on some days. "Cleaning up after high speed crashes is not an enjoyable part of my job. We just want people to slow down, stay within the speed limits and drive to the conditions. If they don't there will be a price to pay," he says.

Home brew grows in popularity Andrew Board Nelson’s craft beer revolution isn’t just thriving in bars and pubs around the region, it’s also alive and well in its garages and sheds. The Nelson branch of Society of Beer Advocates hosted a Home Brew competition over the weekend with dozens of local brewers submitting riggers of their favourite brew for other entrants and judges to taste and critique. The competition is just one of the events the local group organises for the region's home brewers, says Bill Fennell. “We are quite active and do various things like keeping people informed about where they can get craft beer, distribute a newsletter and we run a monthly meeting at different venues around the region.” The home brew competition is run twice a year by the group, each March and November. There were two styles of judging this time around, peer reviews from the other entrants and judging by Dale Holland and Tracey Banner, both certified judges for national home brew competitions. Bill says 36 beers were entered in the competition with some interesting varieties. Winners of the competition were Matthew Hoddy and Gareth Kerr for their pilsner, which was awarded the only gold medal by the judges. The pair say they entered three beers in the competition and their New Zealand pale ale won third place in the peer judging. Matthew says it has taken years of research to perfect their beers. “It takes about five hours to make, six

SOBA Nelson's Bill Fennell, left, and Matt Downer with some of the beer submitted for the home brew competition on Sunday. Photo: Andrew Board. weeks for it to ferment, about two hours to bottle and not long to drink,” he joked. Other winners on Sunday were Matt Downer, who won the peer judging with his Black IPA and Jason Bathgate, who came in second place. Bill says the region has a strong connection with good brewing and more and more people are showing an interest in brewing. “Home brewing is really growing in popularity. In the past, like 20 years ago, there used to be home brew shops on every corner so it was pretty big but it was a different style of home brewing,

it was just the kit stuff but there is a lot more you can do with it this way. It’s a lot more interesting and fun as a hobby. You can also make great beers that are often better than what you can buy in the store.” Two years ago Stoke's Dale Holland won the national SOBA home brew competition and had his winning beer brewed by the Sprig & Fern Brewery. “It is an exciting time for brewing in the region,” says Bill. “Dale’s win two years ago shows that this is a really good place for people to start with their home brewing and it can lead to anything.”

Shopper to win $5000 cash

Richmond Mall manager, David Hill, centre, is gearing up for the promotion with Sassys manager Gretchen Griffin and Telecom manager Liz Nixey.

Shop ‘n’ Win has returned, giving all Richmond shoppers the chance to win $5000 cash for Christmas. All you have to do is purchase an item from one of the participating businesses and fill out an entry form – it’s that simple. This will be the sixth year in a row that the Waimea Weekly has run Shop ‘n’ Win, and last year’s competition was the biggest yet with more than 40,000 entries. The competition runs from now until December 16 and the winner will be announced in the Waimea Weekly’s holiday issue. The business that hands out the winning entry form will win $2000 cash.

Richmond Mall manager David Hill says the competition is an integral part of the way Richmond promotes itself over the Christmas period. “If you shop in Richmond you have a great chance of taking home $5000 cash – how good would that be in the leadup to Christmas?” he says. “Every store in the mall is participating and it was only two years ago that Guyton’s sold the winning ticket. It’s great to be associated with the only locally-owned newspapers in the region too.” Check out page 19 of the Nelson Weekly for a full list of participating businesses.

Back to WW2 battlefield 70 years on

Last time Nelson’s Maurice Abrahams was heading towards El Alamein in Egypt he was full of excitement as he and his "cobbers" drove the Germans out of the strategic town. This time he and his mates were slightly older, but no less excited. Maurice returned to Nelson a fortnight ago after representing New Zealand at the Battle of El Alamein services with 21 other Kiwis who fought to get the region in Allied hands during the Second World War. He says it was a strange experience, with the desolate desert he remembers now home to a good-sized city. But he was thrilled to go and have the opportunity to represent New Zealand again. Maurice first had contact with the armed forces as a 13 year old when he would travel to Tapawera for military camps with the territorials, as he was in the band as a

cornet player. He remembers the regimental parades they would practice and being carried on a stretcher. When World War Two struck Maurice volunteered his services and went as part of the third echelon, or third wave of troops, after three months training at Burnham Army Base, near Christchurch. Maurice says he was happy with his lot and the first few months in Egypt was spent pushing back and forth with German troops. When famed leader LieutenantGeneral Bernard Montgomery arrived Maurice says there was a real sense of excitement. “When Monty arrived there he had everything and told us the big story about what he was going to do. He gave us equipment and armour and the whole division went forward with confidence and started moving forward.”

Maurice says the second battle of El Alamein, an important port region that gave supply routes access to the Suez Canal, was “incredible”. “The amount of artillery engaged and the bombing by our air force was just incredible. It gave you that strength, it made you feel mighty.” Maurice then went to Greece where they were quickly overwhelmed and outnumbered by the Germans. The New Zealanders fled so quickly that they had to leave everything behind, including the saxophone that Maurice’s father had saved up to buy him before he left for war. “I had to leave it I had no choice," he says. Back in North Africa, and much to his surprise, Maurice was reunited with his saxophone. An officer who saw the saxophone case getting left behind and knowing how important it was to Maurice, grabbed it

before he fled and gave it back to him in Egypt. The instrument is still in his family to this day. Maurice came back to New Zealand due to a government sponsored trip in 1943. He married his fiancée Molly within a month of being home and within three months his new wife was pregnant. He never went back to war as he was due to be a father. Maurice says the trip back almost seventy years after he left was an honour. “We were very well looked after. What we all signed up for was to protect our way of living, that’s what we were there to protect and that’s what happened and it was good to see that our efforts are still recognised.” Also part of the New Zealand party for the ceremony, which included countries from all over the Commonwealth, was Veteran Affairs minister Jonathan Coleman.

Nelson WW2 soldier Maurice Abrahams recently returned to El Alamein in Egypt, 70 years after he was there as a soldier. He is pictured above with two mates, also from Nelson while in Egypt in the early 1940s, and playing his saxophone while waiting around. Right he is pictured at the mass cemetary of New Zealand soldiers in El Alamein with LieutenantCasey Pinny.

New season summer fashion in store now BEETEES is a locally owned and operated women’s clothing store which has been operating in Motueka for seven years and in Nelson for 2 years.

We are part of a buying group that has developed a large number of labels, styled in the latest fashions of Europe and North America. This allows us to be very competitive with the larger chain stores and at the same time offering absolute quality at the best possible price. Larraine Beattie works with this group to put together colours, fabrics, design and quality, enabling us to provide that point of difference for the 25years upward age group. BEETEES offer one of the largest ranges of women’s fashions in the Nelson region, from jeans, teeshirts and casuals to mother of the bride and of course elegant evening/cocktail wear. Larraine started in fashion about 20 years ago as a shop assistant, and has since worked her way up to managing stores and now with her husband, Glen, established the BEETEES brand.

In Nelson Larraine is ably supported by Sue Gordon who also has a wealth of experience in fashion, and Glenys Collier who apart from being our office guru is also very experienced in the retail world.

BEETEES is full to overflowing with summer fashions, an awesome array of colours and designs. Come in and talk to the girls about your summer wardrobe, or bring in your favourite garment and the team will be only too pleased to match it with one or more of the fabulous designs in store. BEETEES also has a large range of beautiful accessories, including belts, bags and jewellery – the perfect accompaniment to your outfit. Nelson volunteers off to build more homes

Just weeks after one group of Nelsonians return from building houses in Sri Lanka, another group is preparing for its own adventure with Habitat for Humanity – this time to Cambodia. In March next year 50 New Zealand volunteers, led by local builder Rob Silcock, will head to the city of Battambang where they will join with locals to build houses for families who live in substandard housing. Among the group will be 20 people from Nelson, who will be led by Hayden Campbell who has already done one Habitat build to Nepal and he says he’d love to hear from anyone keen to be involved. “The Habitat build in Nepal was one of the greatest, most rewarding experiences of my life. build in Cambodia came up we knew we had to do it as well as to take as many Nelsonians on the journey with us as we can.” The build is part of Habitat for Humanity’s Global Village campaign. The cost for the travel, accommodation and build section of the trip will be $4800, however as Rob points out this is because the fee also covers a charitable donation to Cambodia. The trip is not all work and no play, as the build lasts for five days and all volunteers have the option to stay on for a further seven days and be part of Rob's unique Cambodia Travel Adventure. For further information, please contact Hayden on campbell.hayden@gmail.com, 021 435 530, or Rob on robsil@xtra.co.nz or 021 221 8978.

Christmas for pets too LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Christmas has come early for all animal lovers this year, with the opportunity to get your pet’s photo taken with Santa this Saturday. Coming from such a large city to beautiful Nelson has been a fabulous move for me, and it’s made me recognise that women everywhere have the same goal – to look and feel their best. I began Ellie May Studios as I felt that Nelson lacked professional make up services for special occasions - from weddings, to balls, to girl’s nights out! Unlike most make up advice available in Nelson, my Elena Pullen focus is on my service and not selling you products. I have trained at Elite make up academy in Melbourne and I have been lucky enough to have worked as a makeup artist in local and international fashion shows and in magazine and TV commercial shoots. But my main interest is in you – helping New Zealand women look and feel their best on their special day. I have recently partnered with Naked Tan to provide you with a mobile, organic, paraben free spray tan service in the Nelson area. That’s right, I come to you! So whether you or your friends and family need professional make up services for a special event or a natural glowing tan for an upcoming holiday please call me anytime.

Seven year old Alice Smith, second from left, was one of more than one hundred students who were left soaking wet after Tahunanui Schools Wipeout Challenge. Held last Wednesday on the school playing field, kids as young as five years old completed laps of the water themed course, and took on the challenge of water sliding, jumping bales of hay and avoiding water pistols. Coordinator Mary Seelan says the school wanted a big family night for the community to enjoy, and the $2700 raised will go towards new school equipment. Students were sponsored by friends and family per lap, and around 500 laps were completed in total. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Top Team takes on Tahuna Nelson’s top teams went head-to-head in an epic showdown that saw teams battling for a spot at the final, and chance to claim the Top Team title. Heat three of the Bowater Motor Group Top Team obstacle competition took place on Sunday at the Tahunanui Playing Field, and after the teams fought across 12 challenges, 8 teams took out the top spots to move into the finals. The event is based on 80s hit TV show Top Town and sees teams made up of friends, families and co-workers participate in leaky bucket races, sponge throwing, tyre slides and other outrageous tasks leading up to a chance to win the Top Team cup. The teams are known to dress in theme, and this time the Fletcher Vautier Moore team dressed as sharks, complete with dorsal fin, the Salisbury School Girls team Super Heroes dressed in tutus and capes, a team from Saxton Stadium came as ‘nanas’, while others opted for plain bright, wild and wacky outfits. Coordinator Kendall Borland says the Nelson teams were impressive, and overall the Sport Tasman event had been a fantastic way to get people moving and having a great time together. “It’s been really good, people love it and it’s a fun way to encourage people to be active.” Ana Hudson, 13, from the Super Heroes team says she found the day “good fun and challenging” and says a highlight for her was having to run in gumboots filled with water. The winners will be decided during an all out event to be held this Sunday from 9am till 4pm at the Moutere Hills Community Centre. A total of 30 teams from Murchison, Nelson and Motueka will compete in the final for a chance to take home the Top Team trophy.

Expo organisers rapt with turnout Getting people out and active this summer was the aim, and over 1500 people turned out on Sunday to view what was on offer at the Outdoor Expo. Put on by Sport Tasman, the theme of more people, more active, more often was followed throughout the day with representatives, clubs, and individuals showing up to share their fun activities with the crowds. From scooters, windsurfers, cast fishing, mountain biking and volleyball, there was an emphasis on not only getting involved but keeping safe while doing so, with each organization promoting their activity's code of safe practice. Sport Tasman community senior advisor Dave Tippett says the event was about getting different people out there and interested in what summer activities are on offer in the outdoors this year, but also getting them doing it all safely. “We wanted to get a whole lot of people from the outdoor industry together and allow people the opportunity to check out what they can get into this summer. “We want them to get active and into the outdoors and return safely," he says. Ride on Bike skills course coordinator Marty Clark says the expo was a great idea, and his mountain bike course was set up to teach young

Nelson Tigers ripped apart by Panthers The Nelson Tigers management were always going to make changes for the Carter Cup in Wellington but they certainly didn’t plan for the two injuries picked up over the weekend. Having been left battered and bruised with only two drivers able to finish the race, manager Daryl Peterson says there isn’t much the Tigers can take out of Saturday’s Challenge Cup loss to the Palmerston North Panthers. Carey Harwood has suffered a broken elbow and injured both his ribs and ankle after he was knocked out with his foot firmly on the accelerator, charging down the track in the wrong direction. He crashed into the back of Nelson Tiger Blair Cunningham’s car, injuring his team-mate in the process. That left Scott Miers and Peter Bengston of Palmerston North to claim a one-two finish, leaving Shane Harwood to settle for third place. Palmy’s Shane Penn and Peter Rees were the next to cross the finish line with Nelson’s Jared Gray coming home in fifth, having led the race in the first lap. Daryl says it was disappointing to hand the trophy back over to the Panthers due to the “unforeseen circumstances”. “These accidents happen and it’s not nice to see,” he says. “We’ve got our new guys in the team now. But you can’t really take anything out of that race. It was also over in two laps.” The Tigers were hoping to use the first three of the scheduled four races as trials ahead of February’s New Zealand Teams Championship. Former 1NZ Dale Ewers and Brett Nicholls will replace the injured duo. “This week and next week we’re still trialling cars. Dale is sort of the father figure that everyone looks up to, so it’s good to have him back in the team.”

Nelson held its first ever blokarting championships on the weekend, with people travelling from all around the South Island to take part in the event. Spokesperson for the Top of the South Blokart club Melissa Frances says the turnout for the event was fantastic, and she was proud of the fact that three local Nelson racers took out their class events. A few years ago Melissa was the only person in Nelson who took part in Blokarting, and says the up and coming sport has seen huge growth, with around 18 Nelsonians currently taking part. “The event was absolutely fantastic, I’ve had feedback from people who attended saying it’s the best Blokarting event they have been to, and some of those people have been to the world champs.” The racing was held over two days at Richmond’s specialist blokarting Vortex track which

Softball's Black Sox come to town Softball fans can meet the national men’s team Wednesday in a meet and greet at Saxton Ballpark. The Black Sox are in Nelson as part of their internal tour as they build towards the world championships in North Harbour next year. Nelson Softball CEO Derryn French says it’s a coup to host the Black Sox for two days. The team will play two exhibition matches plus run coaching sessions in several schools, including Waimea College, Nelson College, Nelson Intermediate, Broadgreen Intermediate, Victory Primary and Clifton Tce School. “The Black Sox do have time set aside for the team to meet with their fans and young softballers from around the region. roes,” he says. Meet the Black Sox is set down for 3.15pm to 3.45pm tomorrow at Saxton Ballpark. The exhibition games will be played at 5.30pm both this evening and tomorrow evening. Spectator entry is free. The home side is an Upper South Island (USI) squad that has a strong local component and will be coached by two of Nelson’s former Black Sox. Marty Grant pitched for the Black Sox from 1990-2009 and Daryl Stratford was a Black Sox short stop from 1982-1988. The Black Sox will enter the World Championship tournament at Rosedale Park ranked second for the first time since 1996. Australia beat New Zealand in Canada in the 2009 competition, ending the Kiwis run of three consecutive world titles in 1996, 2000 and 2004.

TUESDAY 13 November 2012

Locals pipped by Aussie axemen A team of South Island axemen – including half with Nelson ties – was chopped down by an impressive New South Wales team at the first ever Speight's Ale House Wood Chop on Sunday. The six man South Island team was beaten at the last stand with the previous five competitors from each team going chop for chop. The team included Atawhai's Bradley Wallace, who won the underhand competition on the day, former Nelsonian and current world champion Adam Lowe and former Nelson policeman Daniel Gilsenan. The event, at the Speight's Ale House in Stoke, also hosted various underhand, standing chop and sawing events with a corporate challenge giving those in the audience a chance to give the sport a go. Nelson Axemens Club member Bill Nichols says the event was a huge success and they are thinking of making it an annual event. "I think the public liked the teams’ race and people could identify with the teams and really get in behind it." The Australian choppers took home most of the major prizes but Adam Lowe and John Atkin won the sawing competition and then faced off against the winners of the corporate challenge, Team Weiner. Fair to say the world champions won the saw-off with ease. The axemen will next compete at the Nelson A&P Show.

• It is good to see the Anatoki visiting again with full loads of urea, a container ship, a car carrier arrived with cars and departed with processed forestry products, the tanker Torea came and went, a large fertiliser vessel also, and fourteen large fishing vessel movements occurred around the port. • Is the silly season in full swing yet? Sadly I don’t think so. The speed boaties are going in the marina is still an issue but it shouldn’t be. Just look behind you, if you have any form of wavelet departing from your boat then you are probably going too fast. The speed within the marina area, from your berth to the first red post outbound is 3 knots. From the red post inbound, it is 3 knots. Just picture yourself falling or burning yourself as a boat going too fast goes past and you should be motivated enough to slow down. • Last week there was a great deal of activity on the water and I would like to pass on a personal thank you to all those that had clearly gone out of their way to avoid other boats, to obey the traffic regulations, to wear lifejackets and much more. The good guys are never acknowledged enough so pat yourselves on the back and enjoy some safer boating this summer. • We still see the inexperienced paddle boarder trying to paint their name on the Tasman Bay. Unfortunately head stones don’t float so before you inconvenience and put many others at risk on a windy rough day please reconsider whether or not you should be out there. Always carry a flotation device. Safe boating this summer,

Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.
