Motueka Calendar in its sixth year
The Motueka 2022 Calendar is about to go on sale, the sixth that Keep Motueka Beautiful has produced. The Society sees the Calendar as a great way of publicising Motueka’s attractions. Most are sent to friends and relatives of Motueka residents, who no doubt hope that the pictures will prompt a visit! This
year’s calendar continues the watery theme of the 2021 Calendar, with over half of the images featuring the town’s coastline and port area. Other images range from Mt Arthur through to the Abel Tasman coastal track – KMB takes an expansive view of Motueka Ward! The Chair of Keep Motueka Beautiful,
Isobel Mosley, says “our selection committee had a really difficult job this year, with a lot of excellent images offered by local photographers. We hope that folk will agree that the ones we have chosen really catch the flavour of Motueka and its environment”. She extends her thanks to the four photographers whose work is includ-
Do you have investor FOMO?
By Elise VollweilierOur stints in lockdown have come with rather unexpected consequences. We filled our homes with houseplants and revived the sourdough starters from the back of the fridge.
We also turned our focus to our finances, with an explosion of interest in online investment platforms amidst a vague fear that we would otherwise be missing out.
Financial Market Authority Research has shown that in the last few years, a huge number of us have hit the “Join now!” button on investment apps, and then we’ve tried to understand just what to do when our shares, like that drama-queen calathea plant, wilted or thrived.
Sharesies, Hatch and Stake. The apps have catchy names and cheerful websites, and they offer entry-level ways to venture into the share market. And now that we have emerged like slightly grumpy butterflies from our second government-mandated chrysalises, perhaps now is the time to get serious about those investments, and really refine how to make them work for you.
Glyn Lewis-Jones, investment specialist at Motueka’s Castle Trust Financial Planning, says that KiwiSaver has made people aware of the potential returns of investing in the markets.
“The online investment platforms have made investing even more accessible. But in order to do well with your investments, you need to go beyond just picking names you know or going on a ‘hot tip’ from a friend. You need to have a plan and invest with that in mind – and understand what to do when your investments fall in value, because from time to time they will.”
Sitting down for a face-to-face chat with a professional financial adviser gives you the opportunity to get immediate and detailed explanations about your potential investments. You also have the chance to get personalised answers to all your questions without having to navigate a series of dropdown menus.
The team at Castle Trust Financial Planning want to help investors make informed decisions and safeguard themselves against risk. Their qualified advisers offer a collective 100 years of experience in the financial industry, which means that they have steered their clients through many financial storms.
If you’re looking to level up your investment strategy and really make it count in the long run, come in for a chat with the team at Castle Trust Financial Planning, on Motueka’s High Street.

Further changes for Nelson Arts Festivals
The Pukapuka Talks with Charlotte Grimshaw will still be presented by the Nelson Arts Festival in a free digital session.
Nelson Arts Festival has made the difficult decision to cancel its community events Mask Carnivale and Night Vision; two more shows, PechaKucha and Couch Stories; as well as the majority of its Pukapuka Talks literary events.
From the very beginning of the planning period for the 2021 Festival, the Nelson Festivals Trust and Nelson Arts Festival Team developed contingency plans for various scenarios. With the ongoing situation of Covid Level restrictions, the Team and Trust must keep the safety and wellbeing of the artists, crew, and the community as a priority.
Chair of the Nelson Festivals Trust, Brent Thawley says, “In the light of this week’s Government update on the Covid Levels, it is with doubly heavy hearts that we are having to make further changes to what the Nelson Festivals Trust is able to deliver in 2021 while keeping our community safe.
“With the current government strategy rolling out over the next 4 to 8 weeks, we anticipate it is very unlikely that Whakatu will be at a level where we can safely deliver our vision. Because of this, we have had to make further tough decisions, including cancelling Whakatu’s festival-favourite, the Mask Carnivale, the majority of the Pukapuka Talks literary programme, Night Vision, PechaKucha and Couch Stories.”
Two of the Pukapuka Talks sessions will now be free online events.
The leadership team of Co-Creative Directors Rose Campbell and
Lydia Zanetti and Community and Education Director Shanine Hermsen are devastated at having to make this decision. “We held on tightly to a spark of hope that we might have been able to safely gather as a community, but sadly, we continue to face too much uncertainty.
“We know the Mask Carnivale has a particular significance to our community. It’s especially heart-breaking to have to cancel the parade knowing the many hours of preparation already done by so many schools and community groups.
“We’re also deeply saddened that our comprehensive Pukapuka Talks programme won’t happen, and will truly miss the influx of 33 writers, poets, and commentators sharing their stories and perspectives.
“The Trust and team share our huge disappointment with all artists, producers, crew, venues, funders, sponsors and audiences who have generously engaged with Nelson Arts Festival 2021, working together towards a spectacular experience for our community and everyone involved.
“What we take away from this is the incredible strength of collaboration, the connections we’ve built and the creativity we’ve experienced – together, we can look forward to 2022 and beyond.
“We want to take this opportunity to thank our valued funders and sponsors for your heartfelt support and ongoing encouragement, with particular thanks to our core supporter Nelson City Council.”
The Festival is continuing with plans to
present a bespoke programme, including two free digital sessions from the Pukapuka Talks programme:
- The Mirror Book (with Charlotte Grimshaw, chaired by Miro Bilbrough)
- Once Were Hippies (with Miro Bilbrough, chaired by Steve Braunias)
Plus:
- Writing Home: An Antidote to Feeling Stranded (our free digital project with commissioned writers including Hinemoana Baker, Paula Morris, Mohamed Hassan, Rajorshi Chakraborti & more to be announced)
Alongside these digital elements, the festival will present the following – all possible in Level 2:
- Pure Psychic Automatism (Ruby Solly’s writing workshop - Sold Out)
- Nelson City Centre ArtWalk Tour
- Through The Eye of Whakatu (Nelson Provincial Museum)
- Ano me He Wharepuungawerewere and Repose (Refinery
ArtSpace)
- He Raranga Korero: Weaving Conversations (The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatu - Silver. Stone. Wood. Bone.
The Festival is offering full refunds (including booking and credit card fees) to those who have purchased tickets to cancelled shows. Those who hold tickets to The Mirror Book and Once Were Hippies will also be eligible for a refund.
Zooming in on SeniorNet
A local computer group ensured that the elderly were not isolated or missing out on social interaction during the Covid-19 lockdown.
SeniorNet Nelson, a charity group that teaches computer skills to the over-fifties, ran its self-help classes on Zoom. It normally operates out of a fully-equipped Learning Centre in Hastings Street, Nelson, but instead made use of technology to bring people together from across the top of the South Island.
Many of its members were unfamiliar with Zoom and other video conferencing facilities prior to the pandemic lockdowns but SeniorNet Nelson gently encouraged its 350 members to join its tutorials on line.
via screen sharing and followed-up with a question and answer session.
There was plenty of friendly conversation and for an hour and a half the group was transported from their solitary lockdowns at home to a happy, informal get-together in the same virtual room.
Participants had brought their computer problems to the meeting, and as a group they were able to solve issues that might otherwise have frustrated them.

SeniorNet’s Top of the South representative, Roger Pittman, says virtual gatherings are vital for many older people. They can often be the only social interaction some members have during lockdown. In addition, SeniorNet can improve their computer skills and help resolve any technology issues they may have. “There’s no need to ask your grandkids to help when there are dozens of knowledgeable, like-minded and similar aged SeniorNet members available on your computer screen… and they don’t need to be bribed with lollies.”

1000th woman takes to the pedal
Wheel Woman, the Nelson Tasmanbased mountain bike coaching organisation for women, has just reached a major milestone: seeing its 1000th woman take to the pedal.
Coached by Founder Emma Bawtree, Greymouth’s Hope Dietrich claimed the stand as the 1000th Woman to participate in a Wheel Woman course after a recent coaching session at Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park.
The milestone symbolises not only the success of a great business concept but also the progress of women in mountain biking in general. As a mountain biker racing the national circuit in the early 1990s Emma was one of just a handful of women taking to the tracks, but that has since changed.
“When I first started out I had only men to show me the ropes and, although it worked out OK for me, I knew that other woman found that intimidating,” says Emma. “Some of my girlfriends badgered me to take them out one weekend to give them a few tips and the seed of Wheel Woman was planted!”
Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park alone has seen a massive increase in female take up over the years with many having honed their skills through Wheel Woman. Emma credits the beauty of our local parks and trails with much of the appeal for women in the sport.
“A lot of the women we coach are just wanting to get amongst nature, stretch their legs and take some time out for themselves,” says Emma. “Some are young and exploring new sports while many are mums rediscovering their bodies and their selfconfidence.”
For Hope the motivation to take up mountain biking was driven by an opportunity to bond with new friends.
Hope bought a
mountain bike and began training on a flat circuit close to home. One of Hope’s Spring Challenge team mates suggested they gave Wheel Woman a go as a way to build confidence before the big event. After Emma shared some simple tips on braking and cornering and gave them a bit of practice Hope’s confidence blossomed. Her team completed the Spring Challenge without too many hitches and she continues to ride three to four times a week with a view to attending another Wheel Woman session next year.
“Wheel Woman kicked me into gear, so to speak, and being the 1000th woman to be coached by them has really impressed upon me a lasting sense of enthusiasm for mountain biking.”
Hope received a prize package which included Ground Effect and Nancy cycle apparel, cycle products from Squirt, adventure balms from Sweet Cheeks and goods from NZ Pure Sports Nutrition. For Wheel Woman the achievement comes after nine years in business, 3000+ hours in the saddle, the training and engagement of six coaches, and growth across the top of the South Island, with courses available in Marlborough, Blenheim and Hanmer, as well as in the Nelson Tasman region.
Wheel Woman is now looking to expand into Christchurch, grow its portfolio of overnight ‘Backcountry Rides’ and has just launched an e-bike coaching programme. Running alongside all this is Krankin’ Kids, a partner business offering mountain bike coaching to young people aged 6 – 15 years.
“Mountain biking is what I love, but sharing it with others is particularly rewarding,” says Emma. “Reaching the 1000th Woman milestone, however… I never thought it would go that far!”
Join the largest service club in the world!
Motueka Lions Club is on the hunt for new members to join the current 25-30 which will enable them to continue their ongoing support for our local community.
With a number of valuable and worthwhile projects on the go and active board members the Club is seeking further members to get in on the action.
The sociable and happy club was formed here in 1964 and these days they enjoy twice monthly dinner meetings on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month from 6pm at the Motueka Hotel. The meal is followed by a business meeting and often a guest speaker.
With projects from producing and selling kindling wood, growing and selling potatoes,
bagging and marketing fertilizer for home garden use, running the summer mini golf at Kaiteriteri and organising various street appeals the funds raised benefit worthy causes, with particular emphasis on our local Motueka community.
Decisions around who is supported are made at the Club’s meetings, and they raise around $40,000 each year from projects.
Following the 2019 Pidgeon Valley fires the Lions Club presented Christmas cakes to all of our local volunteer fire brigades in appreciation of their service.
“We gain great satisfaction as a team, raising money for our community through a range of organised projects,” says president, Bill Menzies.
The Club is currently
focused on fundraising for their chosen ‘Lions Centennial Project’ raising money for a therapeutic swimming
pool. This will be built as part of the Motueka Community Pool Project, currently listed in the TDC’s Long
Term Plan. Honouring the Lions Club motto of “We Serve”, you can contact the Club to

Meet Your Neighbour at Pokororo Hall
By Fiona NelsonNear the confluence of the Graham River and Motueka River stands the Pokororo Hall. The site is where the fourth Pokororo School had been built in 1914 and functioned there as a school until 1939. In 1947 the site was purchased by the community from the Nelson Education Board for 20 pounds.
Locals raised the funds themselves and in 1955 with local help, Strachan and Wells built the current hall.
Community Halls are important meeting places particularly in rural areas. In the past, community halls have been hubs for socialisation, education, and communication. In the event of emergency situations, like floods and fires, they are used as evacuation points and for help and support. They are still that, but with easier travel into towns now for sport and other interests, the focus and role of rural community halls has lessened.
Pokororo Hall was used regularly by the
community for celebrations and for local groups. As recorded in the 1957 hall meeting minutes, there was the Pokororo Cricket Club, Pokororo Indoor Bowls, Pokororo Women’s Club, Pokororo Men’s Club, and Pokororo Table Tennis Club. There was a card committee, dance nights were held and Santa would visit each Christmas.
Barry Heath, who has lived in the Motueka Valley all his life, remembers biking past the hall when it was being built, on his way into high school. He has fond memories of the Christmas parties at the hall, “Santa used to arrive on all sorts of means - one year Santa came on a pet reindeer…another he came in a helicopter… As the helicopter arrived, Santa gave the children a lolly scramble from above”.
Barry recalls the hall was used a lot for parties before 10 pm closing came in, “I remember walking down the Graham Valley on frosty evenings to go to Saturday night cards. We had dart
teams, fancy-dress parties and End of Harvest parties when the tobacco season finished in March… they were some wild, hair-raising parties”.
In January 1975, the Men’s Club together with the Women’s Club initiated and organised the first Pokororo Art and Craft Fair. It continued on as a very popular two-day event showcasing the work and talent of local artisans - pottery, woodwork and other crafts.
The fair later became a one-day event and finished-up in 2018.
“It was a unique fair because it was only open to people in the valley to showcase and sell their work… but it lost local flavour, there were less stall holders so it was decided not to run it again…We [Pokororo Hall Trust] are living off the proceeds of the fair at the moment,” says Alan Benseman, who has been a member of the Pokororo Hall Trust for 40 years in various committee positions.
These days, community activity at the Pokororo Hall is far
less.
“Within the last three years we had 16 bookings, mainly family gatherings in the afternoon and some parties in the evening, some even overnight,” says Sylvia Arnold.
Sylvia, a Pokororo Hall Trust committee member, manages hall bookings. The committee meets only as needed and holds
an AGM every three years.
At the last AGM in July, the Pokororo Hall Trust committee decided to try and rouse some community spirit and interest for the hall by holding a ‘Meet Your Neighbour’ evening.
“Hopefully it will be an evening where neighbours new and old can connect and
reconnect, longstanding residents and newer residents can kind of have a get-together,” says Sue Thompson who is helping to organise the event.
“The key message we want to share is that it’s a community-owned hall for the community and we want to find out how might people want to
use it.”
Meet Your Neighbour will be held at Pokororo Hall this Saturday, 16 October, 7pm onwards. BYO and a supper plate to share.

My Ride Motueka is coming!
There’s no doubt about it, biking significantly improves our physical wellbeing. In fact, several studies have found that the combination of exercise and exposure to the outdoors is a magic formula for our emotional and mental health. As we become more attuned to not only our health but that of the planet, more and more of us are discovering or rediscovering the satisfaction of two wheeled human powered transportation. From the over 50’s on their tech savvy Ebikes to youngsters carving it up in the mountain bike park; getting out and about on our bikes is fast becoming the most popular form of exercise and transportation on the planet.

Their prices are just as comprehensive with a bike for every budget. Alongside their full range of cycles, you’ll also find a comprehensive selection of bike accessories, parts and equipment.
Bikes are highly versatile forms of transport, howeverwhen selecting your next bike, it’s important to consider its intended use. The newly landscaped Brightwater Village Green ‘came alive’ on Saturday afternoon as 80 competitors and officials registered for the annual Waimea Harriers Brightwater Sprig & Fern 10km Fun Run and Walk, rescheduled from Covid 19 lockdown.
The Brightwater course, with 3kms on the Great Taste Trail heading up towards Wakefield, a circuit around the very scenic Mt Heslington and the remaining 4kms down-hill to the finish on River Road, is a favourite of many. While the ascent to the top of the hill seems strenuous at the time, the view from the other side towards Nelson is spectacular and a great reward for the effort expended.
The sun shone
brightly and the strong wind made running conditions trying, but much more pleasant than the predicted rain and hail would have brought.
However, the first 3 runners homeChris Sharland, Curtis Moore and John Rudge took the course
‘in their stride’, running strongly throughout the race, as did the first women, Catherine Delaporte, Renee Hunt and Colette Read.
Each of the four Waimea Harriers Sprig and Fern Events in the series, are in different locations within the Tasman Region.
Saturday, 16 October is the last race in the 2021 series and is at Mapua, where we expect many of the Mapua residents will join with the regular club runners and walkers to make an awesome event around the beautiful Ruby Coast area.

My beloved Mom was everything you’d want in a mother, and so much more, too. Vibrant, loving, funny and smart, she touched the lives of all with whom she came into contact, from Zambia and South Africa to New Zealand. She added beauty, love and generosity to the world because of who she was.
Mom taught us to spread our wings and fly, and now it’s her turn to dance in the light.
Deeply mourned by Shaun, Bettina Stephen, Andr Thea, Sven, Mike, Brad, Saul oey, Dwayne Cody, and Alastair.

Something will remind us. We never know just when. It might be something someone says, and it all comes back again. The times we spent together. The happiness the fun, once again we feel the pain of life without you Son. Its said that time’s a healer we’re not sure this is true. There’s not a day that goes by Son, that we don’t think of you.

Motueka Athletics ready for the season
Last year the Motueka Athletics Club were fortunate to get funding from Pub Charity for coaching Run, Jump and Throw from an experienced coach, Tony Aikenhead, with assistant from their very own Masters Athletics champion, Joeline Jones. This aided in an improvement for the athletes
during the season, as they tried to beat their Personal Best times in various track and field events.
The Motueka Athletics Club caters for children of any ability from the ages of 5–15, and gives the opportunity to learn new skills, such as track events, shot put, discus, long jump and high jump. Kids are
given the opportunity to compete against both themselves by beating their Personal Best, and other athletes throughout the season.
Athletics helps children to engage in physical activity, develop fundamental movement skills like running, throwing and jumping, and it’s fun! Motueka Athletic
Club had a successful season both at Colgate Games held in Nelson, and the Tasman Championships. Motueka Club came away with the following places. Kaleb 1st overall 6 boys. Beau 1st overall 8 boys. Vianca 1st overall 10 girls. Shanina 3rd overall 14 girls. Tai 2nd overall 7 boys. Throughout the sea-
son, various athletes attended inter clubs competing against Richmond, Nelson and Marlborough during the weekend.
Beau Burger broke the Tasman Long Jump record with a new record of 4.24m. They’re looking forward to another successful season.
