With the current housing shortage, houseboats are becoming a popular alternative. One Nelson family of five say they chose to live on a boat after not being able to afford to buy a rural property. Ella and Luke Christieson live on their boat Argo with their children, Kylie, 10, Isaac, 8, and Lucie, 4, and also a cat called Radar. It’s been one of the great privileges of my career to be the editor of the Nelson Weekly and the Nelson App. Nowhere in that career have I felt as close to the impact of the work of reporting as I have in this role. Community journalism is the work that readers can get nowhere else. We unearth local stories in the pockets of our region. Over four years of leading this paper, that focus has seen us cover the region’s largest ever wildfires. It has seen us take up the struggle of those who need help and celebrate those in our community who never expect to be acknowledged. We champion Nelson while also running a fine eye over what we could be doing better. Then, when a global pandemic hit our shores, we continued to put out the news locals needed to know.
Our news organisation has grown - from one newspaper when I took over, to three weekly newspapers, two news apps, and two monthly magazines. It has seen us recognised with awards and it has seen the trust and respect in our work grow. That mission is more important than ever. The age of information is also the age of misinformation. That’s why news organisations like ours take the work so seriously. We stack up information that is grounded in truth. I thank the reporters I’ve worked with for doing that so admirably and publisher Andrew Board for entrusting me to do it in the first place. I’m now leaving that mission in the capable hands of the new editor Sara Hollyman. I’m excited to see where she takes what is now known as Top South Media. It’s been a pleasure. I’ll see you out in the community, as a fellow reader.

‘Want summer as usual, vaccinate’ Jonty Dine Nelsonians need to take up the call to vaccinate if they want to enjoy their summer as usual, says Nelson MP Rachel Boyack. Rachel says it is imperative Kiwis get their jabs and stresses how crucial vaccination is to enable New Zealanders to keep safe and get back to doing the things we love. “New Zealand is in a crucial phase of the Covid-19 vaccination rollout, as we look to encourage the last 20 per cent of the eligible population to make the choice to get vaccinated.” She says both the DHB and Nelson Bays Primary Health have worked incredibly hard to ensure the region leads the country in vaccinations. Rachel says we now need to encourage those who are a bit unsure about the vaccine. “Have a conversation with someone you trust, and support family members who may be a bit nervous.” Rachel is also doing her part, offering a bucket of KFC to one of her constituents to get his vaccination. She stressed this was a one off, however, locals who get their

Super Saturday will see vaccination events take place around the region over the weekend. There will be a free pick and drop off for Tāhunanui and Annesbrook residents. Call 545 1765 to book. The Edge FM crew will be at Tāhunanui beach on Sunday with a barbecue while free coffee and kai will be on offer at the community hub. A vaccination clinic will also be operating at Nelson Speedway on Saturday night, with free entry to those who receive a vaccination.
Nelson Intermediate will also host a whānau day on Sunday, complete with a sausage sizzle and bouncy castle. Participants will also go in the draw to win a signed Mako jersey. As of 6 October, 190,975 doses have been delivered to Top of the South residents with 80 per cent of the eligible population in the region having received at least one dose. Vaccination events

Love of Lego to go on show Erin Bradnock Self-confessed “Lego nerd” Sam Currie is getting his build together for this year’s Top of the South Brick Show next month. This year’s show is a fundraiser organised by the Nelson Brick Club to help fund Motueka High School’s coding and robot course. A Nelson College science teacher by day, Sam Currie is one of about 15 Nelson Brick Club members who will be contributing to this year’s show. Sam has been a part of the club, that has nearly 60 members in the region, for about four years but has had a lifelong love for Lego. “I was completely mad on it as a kid,” says Sam. After a stocktake a few months ago, Sam says he has accumulated more than 150 sets of Lego, meticulously organised in a dedicated space that his wife and three children have affectionately labelled as “the Lego room”. “If a young Sam was in this room, he wouldn’t know what to make of it. He’d probably sit down and get into everything.” He estimates his Lego collection to be worth about $15,000, with some of his sets now worth triple what they were bought for in the 1980s and 1990s.
College asset sales could take ‘number of years’ Charles Anderson
Nelson Brick Club member and Lego enthusiast Sam Currie with his original build concept for this year’s Top of the South Brick Show in Motueka. Photo: Erin Bradnock. One toy, a limited-edition UNICEF Lego van which was released in 1985, can now be sold for more than $2000 and that’s just for sets without the box. For this year’s brick show Sam dreamed that his project, three years in the making, would be completed. The “mothership” build is to be an ode to the 1990s “M-Tron series” - the most beloved set from his childhood. However, the project has seen many
redesigns and Sam decided to add a motorised lift to the build. So, it’s looking like the “mothership” will have to wait another year before seeing the light of day. “It probably won’t be ready in time for the show.” Instead, Sam is getting to work on his ‘plan b’, a series of motorised trains. The sixth annual Top of the South Brick Show is on at the Motueka Memorial Hall on 13 & 14 November with a gold coin entry.
The process to allow Nelson College to sell millions of dollars’ worth of assets to avert the threat of insolvency could take years, the Ministry of Education says. However, the school itself says it needs to be able to sell off various buildings and land by April next year to help pay off $3.5m worth of debt, which it took out in loans to pay for the renovation of two boarding houses. “The other option is everything goes bad and we are bankrupt,” says headmaster Richard Dykes. The financial problem arose when the number of boarders needed to justify the expense of the renovations did not eventuate, even before Covid-19. Ministry of Education’s deputy secretary of enablement and support, Helen Hurst, says the ministry is working with the school to develop a plan to get its finances back on track and property sales may be part of that plan. “We will continue to provide funding to the school
through teachers’ salaries and operational funding and have confirmed to the Office of the Auditor-General that Nelson College is a going concern.” This means that the ministry sees the school as financially stable and able to continue operating for the foreseeable future. However, Helen says any plans to sell assets could take time. “There are legislative processes that must be followed when any Crown agency, including the Ministry of Education and Boards of Trustees, wants to dispose of property. Our experience is that this process can often take a number of years before the sale is finalised and proceeds are available.” She says these are not Ministry of Education requirements but are the result of legislation and government decisions that are overseen by Land Information New Zealand. The college hopes to sell Fell House, its old caretaker’s residence, and a parcel of land known as Blackett’s Corner.

Jesse’s jiu jitsu journey to health In the leadup to I Am Hope’s Gumboot Friday on 5 November, Nelson Weekly is talking to young people and change-makers about their mental health journeys. This week Sara Hollyman speaks with Jesse Fitzwater. When Jesse Fitzwater lost his best friend to a drug overdose, he knew his lifestyle had to change. He was just 21-years-old, using drugs and struggling to find a solid direction in life. However, six years on, his life couldn’t look more different. “I always had a fire inside me and I didn’t have anywhere to channel it. When I lost [my friend], I started going to the gym.” Initially, Jesse just wanted to get bigger, but soon he noticed his mental state improving. Then he found jiu jitsu. “I took a liking to it straight away and it surrounds you with positive people and role models.” The sport’s core philosophy is to manipulate the opponent’s force against them. Jesse says it involves discipline which has helped keep him on the right path. He now trains at least four times a week as well as doing Muay Thai and weightlifting.

“There’s something really humbling about jiu jitsu, I think it’s the same for a lot of guys. You’re full of testosterone and walking around like you’re sort of invincible. Jiu jitsu teaches you how to face defeat and overcome things.” Through Tukaha Jiu Jitsu Nelson, Jesse was introduced to the team at the Male Room where he now manages the newly opened Whare Haumaru. “I am so grateful for the opportunity at the Male Room to use my own life experience to help improve the lives as others, it’s really changed my circumstances for the better.” Jesse says, even now, he finds it difficult to talk about mental health and problems but encourages those struggling to try and find something that sparks a fire inside them. “It’s quite a hard thing to bring up. I struggle definitely to talk about it especially when you need to have that level of trust in someone, but I think finding something, it

NEWS Great Kereru Count comes to an end: The Great Kereru Count, New Zealand’s largest citizen-led science project, ends in 2021 after eight years of collecting data. Nelson City Council has been working closely with the Urban Wildlife Trust to ensure biodiversity both in Nelson and across the country. Council’s contribution also sought to create more awareness of Nelson’s nature. During 2021, more than 24,000 kereru were reported and counted by the project throughout New Zealand.

part of a healthy mind. “You start eating right and treating yourself right, you’re just generally in a better head space and you can deal with things a lot more.”
Council’s bid to increase affordable housing in Nelson: Nelson City Council has unanimously voted in support of the Housing Reserve Plan, which includes a $2 million grant for local organisations to increase the supply of affordable homes in Nelson. Mayor Rachel Reese says the funding will allow the city to help many of those affected by the housing shortage. Applications for the Housing Reserve Grants Programme will be open from 7 October to 3 November. Property prices continue to rise: Residential property price rises increased by an average of 4.7 per cent over the past three months in Nelson, with the average price of a home increasing to $826,983 in September. Local QV senior property consultant Craig Russell said most of the value growth was land value inflation. “Prices for sections in new developments are continuing to creep upwards,” he said. However, he warned that rising construction costs and significant delays in awaiting title and construction will also likely dampen demand for new builds to some extent. “A tightening of lending criteria and rising interest rates are also expected to soften property price increases.”

Skylar defies death after car accident Kate Russell Reporter
kate@nelsonweekly.co.nz
When Olivia Small got a call last year to say her dog Skylar had been hit by a car, she thought it was a prank. Furthermore, when she was told her beloved pup might not survive the risky spinal surgery that would give her a chance to live, she refused to believe it. Now, 15 months later, Skylar the two-year-old catahoula cross is not only walking again - she’s thriving. “I had a gut feeling she would pull through - I had to give her a chance to try,” says Olivia. Olivia adopted Skylar as a puppy in 2019 from an Auckland pound. “I fell in love with her straight away - it happened quite seamlessly.” Olivia and Skylar were soon enjoying a new life in Nelson, but their world came to a standstill one day in July 2020. “I had dropped her off at my mum’s house in Wakapuaka, but she managed to jump the fence, escape down to the Boulder Bank and was hit by a car.” The driver left after a few minutes but a family who was nearby stayed with Skylar until Olivia ar-
rived. “I was in hysterics. She couldn’t move or anything. We think the car only hit her back - she had no visible injuries, except under her tail was completely skinned off and there were a few scratches on her head.” She was rushed to Halifax Vets for pain medication and x-rays, which showed that she had crushed her L1 vertebrae. The only hope for Skylar was surgery, and with no options for this in Nelson, they prepared themselves for the long drive down to Christchurch to get it done. “It was one of the worst drives of my life, she was just crying - it was so sad.” Seeing Skylar in so much pain, Olivia began to ask herself if she had made the right decision. “I thought, ‘should I be doing this? Is this good for her?’ I felt like I was being quite selfish. The surgeon said there was a 50/50 chance of it working - and that was being generous.” But Olivia’s decision was the right one, with the surgery being a success. “It took half a day. The surgeon said he had to pull the bones in her vertebral column out carefully in little bits. Then they put pins in her back to help stabalise

her spine.” Surgery was followed by five months of “lots and lots” of rehabilitation.
“Lots of physio, acupuncture and laser therapy - as much as we could.” But Skylar was a trooper through it all. “She was amazing. She never once growled or tried to bite - she was just so good to everyone.” Once Skylar showed signs of wanting to move around more, Olivia ordered her some custommade wheels to help her become more mobile. “At first she was like ‘what do I do?’ but once we took her down
to the park and started cheering her on, she just started running. It was awesome,” she recalls. “As soon as she got the hang of it, it was amazing. It gave me a glimpse of hope that she was going to be okay.” Altogether, Skylar’s recovery has cost around $20,000, but pet insurance has covered a portion of the cost. Currently, Skylar’s favourite places to visit are the beach and the Maitai. Olivia also hopes to soon return to their much-loved bush walks. She says Skylar also loves meeting other dogs - although some aren’t so sure about her wheels. Skylar has now taken her recovery a step further and has started walking on her own. She is now “unstoppable” and is “always” up for a walk. “The hardest part is learning how to stand up on her own again as she’s still got no muscle in her back, but we’re working on building that back up,” says Olivia. “At home, she doesn’t wear wheels anymore. She’s got a bit of a sway, but she’s quite coordinated. If she starts to tip, she will correct herself. “She just doesn’t want to stop.” Follow Skylar’s journey on Instagram: ‘skylarthecatax’

Driving is all in the family Erin Bradnock Reporter

A mother and daughter duo got their driver licenses together on the same day, the first in their family to ever do so. Columbian-born Maller Johana Cueri Viascas, known as Johana, and her 22-year-old daughter, Luisa Yurani Villegas Cuero, each earned their restricted licenses in August with help from Open Road Driving Training Nelson. Open Road is a national programme funded by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment to support former refugees in their settlement in Aotearoa by helping them get their restricted licenses. This was Johana’s third attempt at her restricted license after two nervous tests and trouble finding the right translator. Thankfully, Luisa was able to be there
with her mum to help translate the testing instructor’s questions so they could both get their licenses together on 16 August. “It was a big relief,” says Johana. “I called my mother in Columbia and she was very, very happy too.” Her other teenage daughter is also on track to get her license through her school. Luisa says the licenses have already made a big impact on their whānau. “It helps with study, shopping for groceries, getting to work.” Luisa used to have to rely on the bus service or hitching a ride with a colleague to get to her work in Stoke. Driving mentor Mike Burton has high praise for Luisa. “She worked hard at it, and we had good fun together ... She was always quick to point out when I would make a mistake,” he says. The mother-daughter duo agree that the warmth from the Open Road team
helped them behind the wheel. “Everyone has been really friendly,” Luisa says. Nelson’s Open Road programme has been running since 2016 and has helped 168 learners successfully pass their restricted licenses. “We aim to get 35 learners to their license each year. By June next year, we hope to celebrate over 200 learners getting their license,” facilitator Margo Ruhen says. Margo has seen the impact a license can have for someone new to the country. “Even the little things like picking up supermarket shopping can be a massive undertaking for a family if they don’t have a license.” With her new license, Luisa has put her hand up to be a translator for Spanish speakers learning to drive. Once she’s able to, she’d also like to be a mentor herself. In the meantime, Margo says the programme is always looking for volunteers.

Small slice of history up for sale
Mall Mall Mall Chat Chat Chat
Sara Hollyman Editor
sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz One of Stoke’s original homes, Holland House, is up for sale, representing a rare chance to own a slice of Nelson history. The grand Aldinga Ave homestead is named after its builder, George Holland, who is also thought to have built Broadgreen House around the same time. The building, that was built using straw and mud from the property sometime during the 1840s, is steeped in history and thought to be one of the oldest continually lived in residences in the country. The house was originally part of a 25-acre orchard but now sits on 1200sqm of land. Current owner John Broadbent purchased the home in 2015 with his partner Nigel. The home caught their eye because of its homely feel. “My favourite part is probably all the exposed original wood, it has a lot of character,” Nigel says. John agrees but says his favourite part of the house is the garden. Although he needed some swaying, John says the compromise was that he would have a modern space, which is now a mancave at the back of the garage. Originally The Stead House, before becoming St Anne Aldinga, the property was eventually renamed Holland House. George Holland is thought to be the first person to bring hops into the country. After pouring love, time and money to fix up the house, John and Nigel have decided to downsize and modernise. “We’ve done our bit for history,” Nigel says. The couple have been running the home as a bed and breakfast and say they will miss the property but it’s time for someone else to enjoy it. They have begun sorting through their large collection of antiques, deciding what to get rid of, what can stay and what can be accomodated in a more modern home. The Category 2 heritage home is currently being marketed by Bayley’s Nelson. To view details visit bayleys.co.nz

Opinion
Your Voice Controversial Three Waters: Mayor Rachel Reese and councillors voted in support of sending a letter to local government minister Nanaia Manuta regarding Three Waters on September 23, 2021. Councillors Skinner, Courtney, and Brand, who voted against supporting the Three Waters letter, have been made to look like they are causing politics in the mayor's eyes. This is totally unfair, as they are representing a big section of the Nelson community, which is so important for democracy and freedom of speech. The referendum would have given the Nelson community an opportunity to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to Three Waters and get community opinion, so councillors and the mayor could have made an informed decision before sending the letter to the minister. Nelson City Council would look after Three Waters assets better than the New Zealand Government. The mayor has made it clear that savings could be made going with the New Zealand Gov-
ernment, which is like throwing fairy dust in the air - the mayor knows she can't guarantee this 100 percent. Previous mayors and councillors have worked extremely hard over the years to look after Three Waters assets. Alastair Cotterill
Covid-19 vaccine: Why isn’t everyone just going and getting a Covid jab? Having to have vaccinations is nothing new. I’m 73 and, throughout my life, I have had at least 16 different vaccinations scarlet fever, whooping cough, measles, rubella, mumps, TB, polio, smallpox, tetanus (I’ve had this jab every 10 years), cholera, typhoid, hepatitis A & B, shingles, influenza (I’ve had this jab yearly for over 20 years) and Covid-19. In times past, when other epidemics were raging, I even had to carry documentary proof of smallpox, cholera, and typhoid vaccinations before being allowed to enter other countries. All these vaccinations have kept me well and helped me avoid spreading some nasty infections and I always got the jabs without a second thought.
Opinion editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz facebook.com/nelsonweekly topsouthmedia.co.nz As a non sequitur postscript, I’ll just add that I strongly support the proposed housing development up the Maitai. Currently, the land is only growing gorse. The proposed homes will house families and provide jobs and much-needed local revenue for our shops, businesses, and local tradespeople and give Nelson City Council about $1 million extra a year in rates income. I am also a supporter of the Government’s Three Waters reform programme. Andrew Rose John Mitchell: I learn with regret from the article by Erin Bradnock in your 6 October issue of the death of my former colleague at the University of Canterbury, John Mitchell. This account states John's descent from four Māori tribes but says nothing about his predominant descent from his colonial British forebears whose culture he embraced in his university studies. Indeed, I had known John for four years before I learned that he had any Māori ancestry. This is all rather curious, is it not? Bruce Moon
Three Waters fiasco: Earlier this year in May, my letter outlining the unfairness of what I foresaw with the Government’s proposed water supply reform was published. Not at all unexpectedly since then, there has been almost unanimous countrywide objection to the ‘Three Waters plan’. As I said, Nelson ratepayers have at great cost brought our assets up to proper standards, so linking us with North Island councils would bring expectations of us funding areas that haven’t sorted out their own situations. Having been involved with councils for quite a few decades, I am aware that up until around 1980, council infrastructure was funded by central government by way of suspensory loans (not needing to be repaid) and grants. Rather than set up centralised, culturally-based ownership, the government would be better to learn from the past and fund existing locallyowned councils to democratically manage their three waters assets. Government should accept responsibility for this. The Resource Management Act has allowed minorities to culturally object to scientifically
well-proven existing treatment systems resulting in the threat of huge costs to replace assets that are worldwide accepted as safe and effective. Nelson is well served with its existing assets. The payment of a pittance to local bodies to allow the ownership of their assets to be transferred to an undemocratic system is not an acceptable way forward. Ian Barker - former Nelson City councillor Who turned the lights out? Get some solar lights from Mitre 10 Mega for $25. Arawhita Wiringi Maybe the council purchased them from Ali Express. Colin Jefford Six out of 18 strings faulty within a week signals extremely poor quality. They were clearly never commercial-grade quality lights designed to withstand all weather conditions. A rainstorm isn't an uncommon event. Louise Geraghty Mask Carnivale cancelled: It's a masked parade every day. Shane Scott

She has owned Mind & Body Therapy for a year now and is loving it. “I really enjoy looking after people and giving them a break from everyday stresses, leaving them more relaxed and revived at the end of a session.” Jo provides relaxation massage using Tui Balm waxes. “Massage can relieve tension and pain, so it’s ideal for busy people, whether you’re working, studying or parenting, etc.” Jo is also a student counsellor, who is working towards a degree in counselling. “I provide a holistic wellness package that can include both counselling and massage. My passion is women who are going through difficult times and are juggling a multitude of things. They can come to me and process their problems, have a relaxation massage and leave feeling cleansed.” Allow from 30 minutes for a ‘quick revive’ or two hours for a ‘process and pamper’ session. Available for both men and women. By appointment only. Phone 021 264 7559. Nelson-based psychotherapy graduate, Twané, is working towards her certification, so she is currently able to offer psychotherapy sessions at reduced rates. “Psychotherapy is an evolutionary process that helps a person look at long-standing attitudes, thoughts and behaviours that get in the way of healthy relationships and good quality of life,” says Twané. “It helps to uncover the root cause of problems, resulting in more long-term changes of how we view ourselves and the world.” Ultimately, psychotherapy aims to empower individuals by freeing them from unconscious triggers or impulses, through increased self-awareness. “Psychotherapy is a form of self-care, encouraging people to talk to someone about what bothers them. Sessions (in-person or via Zoom), provide a safe, confidential, judgement free environment to explore and gain insights into who we truly are, and what might be getting in the way of unfolding our true potential.” Twané is a graduate of Hakomi – a mindfulness-based, body inclusive form of psychotherapy, and she’s a first-year student for an interpersonal psychodynamic model of psychotherapy which is a trauma and developmental model. Lack of qualified staff opens doors for apprentices Jenny Nicholson A shortage of qualified staff in the trades sector has increased the amount of apprenticeships on offer as businesses struggle to fill vacancies. Trade Me Jobs sales manager Patrick Cairns says Nelson Tasman saw a 44 per cent increase in the number of job listings in the trades and services sector in the third quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year. He says wages for the sector have also increased, up 8 per cent on the previous year. Scott Construction operations manager Tyne Seward says they are constantly looking for qualified staff. Three Waters: The Factsheet If you are trying to find out more on Three Waters reform you may have found yourself wading through a lot of misinformation. Nelson City Council has produced a factsheet that covers some of the most common misconceptions we have seen, and links to external information that can be trusted. Why is Council not recommending a public referendum at this time?
to catch up with historical underinvestment, and to meet rising drinking water standards and rising environmental standards.
At the meeting on 23 September, Council considered a proposal to hold a referendum prior to making a final decision about whether to take part in Three Waters reform. However, elected members received clear, independent advice that there is limited merit in Council holding a referendum that could lead the Nelson community to believe they could make a Yes/No decision, when the Government has the final say on whether the reforms go ahead. To hold a referendum could also be seen as wasted expenditure of ratepayer’s money.
By combining 67 local authorities into four new water entities, the Government modelling shows that efficiencies of scale will allow more investment in water services delivery to occur without significantly increasing costs to ratepayers.
In addition, until the final form of the proposal is known, it would be premature to initiate a referendum as the community does not currently have the information required to consider an informed decision. The advice stated that public engagement and consultation would be a more appropriate way for the Government to understand and incorporate public opinion. Council has asked the Government to make improvements to the public information campaign, and to ensure there is adequate public consultation before any final decision is made.
Why hasn’t Council decided to ‘opt in’ or ‘opt out’? We are not yet being asked to opt in or out. Councils around New Zealand have been asked to provide feedback to Government before Cabinet make their final decisions on the reform programme. Council is legally obliged to seriously consider this reform, which means that deciding to ‘opt out’ or ‘opt in’ before there is a final proposal from the Government would be premature. This would be contrary to our obligations to make an informed decision. To reject the proposal now, would also mean losing our ability to influence the reform. To be clear the Council has not opted in by default.
Why is the reform needed? Changes to national quality standards for water, wastewater and stormwater, population growth and the effects of climate change will put more pressure on our three water networks. This will mean the cost to upgrade, maintain and improve infrastructure is going to increase considerably. If the status quo remains, New Zealanders will see substantial increases to water bills over the next 30 years. For Nelson this will mean a projected increase of about $1,000 (in today’s dollars) per household if reform does not go ahead. New Zealand will need to invest between $120 billion to $185 billion in its three waters infrastructure over the next 30 years
shape.nelson.govt.nz/three-waters-reform
There is a common misconception that the Government is asking councils to consider and compare their current Three Waters operations and costs, with a future under the service delivery reforms. This is incorrect, the past is not a good indicator of future costs. The status quo for water service providers is changing. To give an example, the Water Services Bill received Royal Assent on 4 October, which implements the Government’s decision to comprehensively reform the drinking water regulatory system. Changes like this will add significant obligations to councils and this comes at an increased cost. Likewise, new environmental standards are being introduced to help better protect our environment. Three Waters systems that do not meet these standards will need to be upgraded, at significant cost.
How would the proposed cross-subsidisation between various council areas operate? In our written response to the Government, we have queried this issue and await a response: “Accepting that there will be some net benefits, how do we ensure that places like Nelson that have invested in Three Waters infrastructure are not penalised because other councils have not invested at the same level?”
Are our water assets being sold off? No. The assets remain in public ownership and aren’t being sold. The new entities would be collectively owned by councils, on behalf of communities. The Three Waters assets would be transferred off our balance sheets to the new entity. Based on the current book values of our Three Waters assets and our Long Term Plan projections, an estimated $716 million of assets would transfer to the new entity on 1 July, 2024.
Will we be left with Three Waters debt on our balance sheet? No. The debt that we have accumulated in building our Three Waters assets would also be transferred to the new entity. Based on our Long Term Plan projections an estimated $81.5 million of debt would transfer to the new entity on 1 July, 2024. We would also receive a one-off payment of $20.7 million to invest in the wellbeing of our community.

Local volunteers will take to the streets on Friday 29 October and Saturday 30 October for the nationwide Breast Cancer Foundation Annual Appeal. Richmond and Stoke Area Coordinator, Rachael Watson, says they are fortunate to have a loyal
bunch of people who come back year after year to volunteer. “We get help from Richmond Li-
ons and the local Soroptimists group, which is great,” says Rachael. However, there are still a few spots available for people who would like to join the roster. If you are interested in helping out, do give Rachael a call. “We are reassuring people that the Breast Cancer Foundation are putting guidelines in place for collecting, that includes scanning of QR codes, use of hand sanitiser and the wearing of masks.” It’s a very worthy cause – everyone knows someone who has been affected by the breast cancer. In fact, Rachael’s own sister passed away from the disease 11 years ago, so for her, it’s very personal. “My 12-year-old daughter, Bella, helps me out each year too as well as my Mum and sisters picking up shifts.” Businesses are encouraged to get involved – they may want to contribute to the appeal, wear pink or having a morning tea.
Volunteers such as Jen Adams, Ruth Malcolm and Jane Mitchell, will soon be out on the streets collecting for the Breast Cancer Foundation Annual Appeal. Funds are used for research, education and support of those fighting breast cancer. “Funds are used in for research, awareness, education and support of those fighting Breast Cancer.”
For more information, phone Rachael on 021 209 3325 or register at www. pinkribbonvoulunteer.org.nz.

Film fest comes to Suter
Kate Russell
New Zealand’s premiere international short film festival is coming to Nelson this week. The 2021 Show Me Shorts Film Festival is ready to go at Alert Level 2 at the Suter Theatre from 16 - 17 October. ‘The Sampler’ session will be showing over the two nights, as well as the addition of a film written by and starring Nelson’s Jodie Hillock called ‘Blood and Gold’. Set in Arrowtown, it tells a story of the Otago goldrush from a woman’s perspective. The Sampler features eight local and international shorts of wide general appeal. Each film has a running time of between four and 20 minutes. “This collection provides a great way to sample what Show Me Shorts is all about,” says acting festival director Gareth Farry. Nelsonians will get to see the festival’s first Sudanese film, ‘Al Sit’, as well as UK film ‘Don vs Lightning’, and Colombian film ‘El tamaño de las cosas’. There are also three New Zealand films in the line-up.

Gareth says the challenging times we are in have brought a real depth and edginess to the films they have seen come through this year. “It’s a programme like no other in that way. And the fact that New Zealand audiences will be the first in the world to see many of the films is an extraordinary nod to the mana of our special festival.” The festival has been running since
2006 and goes to 30 cinemas nationwide, from Kaitaia to Stewart Island. The 2021 Show Me Shorts Film Festival is on at the Suter Theatre on 16 and 17 October at 7.30pm. Third time unlucky for Mako Jonty Dine and Peter Jones The wait continues. The Tasman Mako fell short in just its third attempt at the coveted Ranfurly Shield, losing 34-22 to the Magpies in Napier on Saturday. It has been almost 10 years since the Mako last had a shot at the shield, a 49-40 loss to Taranaki in 2012. While the Mako has experienced great success recently with backto-back titles, the Ranfurly Shield has and continues to elude them. The Mako learned some harsh lessons about the reality of shield rugby at McLean Park. Firstly, that mistakes are amplified under shield pressure, secondly, that defence is a cornerstone of shield success, and thirdly, that reputations mean nothing when the Log o’ Wood goes on the line. Tasman’s defence went missing in the early stages, four tries being conceded before the half hour mark. Then, when the Mako re-discovered their mojo in the middle stages of the second spell, the
home side tackled relentlessly before forcing a couple of critical turnovers on their goal line. Tasman certainly had some bad luck. Co-captain Quinten Strange, such a pivotal figure, was injured and out of the game after quarter of an hour. His influence, especially at lineout time, was sorely missed, although fellow lock Pari Pari Parkinson worked his socks off to compensate in that area. The Mako bench were consequently impacted by injury, Hugh Renton having to enter the match early to cover for Strange and then prop Atu Moli lasting only a few moments when he entered the fray for the final quarter. Although coming up short, there were several heroes out there for the challengers. Winger Timoci Tavatavanawai, who must have put up his hand for a Super Rugby contract, was outstanding, both as a kick chaser and with ball in hand. Parkinson and Renton’s work rates were exceptional, while

However, keeping in touch is one thing, kicking on to snatch victory in such a high-profile encounter is another and Tasman were not able to step up. Let’s hope it is not another nine years before the Mako get a fourth chance to complete their ascent.

Rain dampens start to cricket season Jonty Dine Despite the late arrival of heavy rain, only one match was called off as the Nelson 40-over cricket competition got underway on Saturday. Defending champions Athletic College Old Boys kicked off its season in style, managing to get in a result before the rain arrived at the Maitai Cricket Ground. In his debut for the club and his first year out of college, Jonty Raxworthy made an immediate impression with a half century at the top of the order against Wakatu. Reuben Smith capped off the innings with a blistering 35 off just 15 balls, smashing four sixes as he propelled the hosts to 215/8. Dhamesha Rathnayake's 3 for 52 helped reduce the damage for Wakatu who made a strong start to its chase. Opener Brad Smith scored 48 to guide Wakatu to 81/2 before a collapse ensued. Regular wickets would reduce Wakatu to 167/9 after 40 overs, falling 48 runs shy of victory as Ollie Jones-Allen, Martin Slabbert and Kevin Dsouza all bagged two wickets. Meanwhile, in Māpua, a stunning century from skipper Harsh Visavadiya powered Wanderers
to 214/9 against Nelson College. Harsh hammered nine sixes in his dominant innings of 132 which came from just 93 deliveries. His performance almost overshadowed a superb spell from Jordan Kelso who bagged 5/31 before backing up with a 50 with the bat. Jordan's heroics weren't enough however as Nelson fell 56 runs short, Joseph O'Connor claiming 3/23. The late downpour cut short the final game at Jubilee Park which was deep into the second innings. Stoke Nayland was looking set for victory against Waimea Toi Toi United before the game was abandoned.
At 133/7, Waimea had some work to do chasing Stoke's total of 196 with just six overs remaining. Earlier in the sunshine, the visitors made a strong start with opener Ben Stark scoring 42 while Sean Neal provided some late fireworks with a 24-ball 43. Sam Baxendine was the pick of the bowlers for Waimea claiming 2 for 32 as Stoke fell just shy of 200 in its 40 overs with the loss of eight wickets. In reply, Waimea struggled to gets its innings going with regular wickets falling. Jared Silvester, Cameron
Neame, and Neal each picked up two wickets apiece while Matt Deaker conceded just 13 runs from his six overs.
Stoke/Nayland was awarded the win via Duckworth/Lewis Method after the rain arrived to cut short the day.

Tevita Koloamatangi’s days in the Mako jersey appeared to be over. However, following a string of injuries to the team, Tevita was unexpectedly recalled to the squad after a five-year absence. At 33, Tevita is now the elder statesman in the side, a fact that is particularly pleasing to the former holder of that title. “It was Quentin MacDonald, but he’s made it known that he isn’t the oldest anymore, so he is happy,” Tevita says. He recently came home to Nelson and set down roots with his wife and two children, aged five and two. He and wife Belinda co-own F45 in Nelson and Richmond as well as Body Pulse. Now Tevita also has his rugby commitments to juggle. The former Tongan-international is more than willing to offer his vast experience to the Mako - whether it means getting back on Trafalgar Park or simply holding a hit shield for a teammate. “I’m just happy to help out where needed.” Tevita’s career was almost tragically cut short back in 2016 after numerous concussions. Tevita suffered four in the space of just 12 months while playing Super Rugby and ITM Cup. A fifth and most serious came
while playing for London Irish and, after just one appearance, Tevita’s contract was terminated, and he was forced back home. With a foggy mind, short temper, and young child, Tevita seriously contemplated hanging up his boots. “I was forgetting stuff and the little things just pissed me off.” However, Tevita was thrown a lifeline in the form of a contract to join South Mazda based in Hiroshima, Japan. With less emphasis on the physical side of the game and more focus on speed, Tevita was able to carry less weight and endure less destructive collisions. “I didn’t want to be brain-dead, but I was really lucky. I have friends who have had to give up the game and are still suffering.” The 37-cap Mako has also returned to his home club, Stoke, where he intends to finish his illustrious career. “I will keep playing club till the wheels fall off.” Tevita is also mentoring at risk youth at his former school, Nelson College. As a rugby player, Tevita is used to quick results - whether it be win, lose or draw, however, has had to adjust to attaining more gradual success in life. “You need to invest your time, build a rapport and relationship. It’s more of a long haul.”
