Sevens to kick off festivities The excitement of the Richmond Festival begins on Sunday September 25 with the Tasman Invitational Sevens Tournament. Up to 44 teams, totalling more than 600 players, are set to take the fields of Jubilee Park in Richmond, in an spectacular event that will lead up to the World Cup Pool C match between Italy and USA as well as Australia versus Russia. There will be three Open Men grades, an under-18 grade and even an under-13 grade allows local and international rugby players of all ages to showcase their skills in rugby’s fastest form of the game, 7’s. The tournament will run throughout Sunday in a fun, social and relaxed atmosphere building towards the tense and pulsating finals of each grade in the afternoon. Tournament organiser and former USA international Anthony Holder says the tournament was inspired two years ago to replicate the most popular form of the game in the United States as well as giving locals and international fans a first hand experience at getting on the field during the cup. International fans have shown their interest in the tournament but Anthony is hoping all the local rugby clubs will also take part. The end of the rugby is just the beginning of the night’s entertainment. At the conclusion of the rugby prize giving, a local live band will hit the stage playing music for all to enjoy. The band will entertain with a variety of music from Kiwi tunes to international hits that locals and international visitors to the region will recognise. Our Local brewery ‘Sprig and Fern’ Beer Tasting Tent and a ‘Kiwi Tucker’ (Food) tent will provide all party goers everything they need to see out the nights festivities. The night’s festivities will conclude around 9pm, but the party continues walking distance across the fields at the Waimea Old Boys Rugby Clubrooms thereafter. Throughout the day the tournament will be live across the airways with radio coverage from More FM. There will be children’s activities, bouncy castles and a range of Family attractions to entertain every visitor. It’s not too late to register, simply email Anthony at tasmansevens@gmail.com

The Stars n Stripes Block Party is set to paint Richmond red, white and blue with a lunchtime main street parade, an afternoon of kid’s entertainment at the Richmond Mall and evening of street party festivities at Sundial Square on September 26. A block party is an American tradition, commonly organised by the residents of a community, usually limited to a city block, in which streets are closed off to vehicle traffic and participants eat, socialize, entertain, and enjoy. Richmond’s own block party begins with a colourful selection of local clubs, schools, community groups and special guests will be on show at midday to kick off the party, as all things American descend on Queen St, Richmond as the Main Street Parade sweeps through town. The parade will be lead by the Nelson City and Motueka District’s Brass Band, and is to feature colourful iconic American characters along with classic cars, army jeeps, and hot rod bikes. A road closure will be in effect on the necessary streets during the parade. Motorists are requested to adhere to the conditions of this road closure whereby ensuring an unobstructed parade path is kept clear between 11.30am-12.30pm. Croucher St Car Park will be closed from 11.30am – 11.30pm. The main street parade is a great example where we have more than 600 people confirmed to parade down Queen St. There’s a whole heap of other community groups as well confirmed to show their take on America. Following the parade, a series of short performances and exhibitions will take place at Sundial Square, with the Richmond Festival to be officially opened by visiting US Ambassador David Huebrer and the Mayor of Tasman Richard Kempthorne. The main street parade will run regardless of the weather, however in the unlikely event of extremely bad weather, the parade will follow a modified alternative route through the Richmond Mall. An afternoon, jam packed full of classic mall entertainment follows, competitions and exhibitions will take place after school at the Richmond Mall. Ten of Tasman’s finest young singers will compete in the American Idol:Richmond Mall Edition karaoke competition, vying on their quest to be crowned idol king or queen. The Great Mall of America Eating Competitions is set to bring entertainment value to the afternoon’s lineup. Hot dogs and fruit pies will be served up in copious quantities as Richmond searches for the greatest guts guzzler. How many American hot dogs can you munch in a minute? As the sun sets, an evening of dancing, fine foods and mingling will unfold with a quintessential kiwi picnic featuring the best of local fare. From 5pm to 10pm, the Block Party takes to life. Tasman’s finest authentic American themed food stall providers have teamed up with the best of classic kiwi cuisine stall holders and will be serving up a delightful assortment of spare ribs dripping in tangy BBQ sauce, woofire pizza’s, venison burgers, cinnamon spiced donuts, sticky candy floss plus much more. The Block Party is strictly no BYO. Quench that irresistible thirst with a selection of Richmond’s own Sprig n Fern beer, or enjoy a glass of premiere wine from the local Seifried’s range. For those who cannot join in the daytime celebrations – this is your chance to join in the party atmosphere.
Richmond businesses have been given American flyers and are encouraged to show their support for the United States. Judged on the afternoon by Richmond Unlimited committee members and awarded on the night, businesses have the chance to score a double pass to the Italy versus USA game on September 27. Richmond Unlimited’s Sally Wood says it was a great idea for businesses to show their support for the Eagles and their visiting supporters. “It adds vibrancy and colour and lifts community spirit. It’s a one in a life time opportunity for Richmond businesses and sets the scene for the parade and block party.” The winning business will be selected on creativity, adding to the business packs that were distributed during the
past weeks, and will be announced at the block party. Headlining the Stars n Stripes Block Party is Madsen Promotions brings you The American Invasion. Fronted by Paul Madsen, the band performs a collection of classic songs made famous by the rock bands of the USA including; Living on a prayer, Sweet Home Alabama, Heartache tonight, plus many more, This American rock show is made up of talented local musicians, and will be a night to remember. Paul is renowned for being a interactive entertainer, with 30 years showbiz experience, he gets a kick out of people having a great time, especially Nelson folk! This raw edge American rock show has been carefully crafted to sound like the real thing topped off with an energetic performance.

Jonathan McKeown A record television audience tuned in for the opening match of the Rugby World Cup and some inner city bars had to put on extra staff to cope with demand and with Nelson’s first game one week away today, the city is buzzing. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio was in Auckland for the opening ceremony and match, and witnessed the large number of tourists around dressing in team colours. He says excitement isn’t confined to the nation’s largest city. “Auckland was extremely busy and it was an insight into what it is going to be like in Nelson and all I can say is it will be a fantastic time for everyone.” The opening weekend will be remembered for the strong performance of the second tier nations and close results all around. This meant most of New Zealand was glued to the television or packed in official match day bars to catch the action. Official figures showed it was the largest ever television audience in New Zealand with over 1.9 million households tuning into the opening match. Rob Bowe, part-owner of the 623 bars says town was buzzing, with fans at 623 In The City very loud and vocal. “We put on extra staff and opened up a bar out in the beer garden to cater for the extra crowd,” he says. “But there were no problems I was

It’s game on! As the biggest party to hit New Zealand rocks its way around the country, Nelson is just days away from joining the fun. The Game On Festival, featuring an action-packed list of events around Nelson,
launched last week but the highlights don’t start until this coming week. The Italian Festival, the re-enactment of the first game of rugby to be played in New Zealand and, of course, the Italy v Russia
match at Trafalgar Park, the first of three games our city will host during the 2011 Rugby World Cup, all take place within

“I’m going to all the Nelson World Cup games and seeing the re-enactment game as well.”
“I’m watching the rugby, I want the Springboks to win, they’re gonna win.”
“Our school, Nelson College, is doing the Haka on the Church steps, I’m excited.”
Re-enactment match sets tone for cup Nelson joins in RWC fun FROM PAGE 1 the next week. But the one event in particular that has drawn attention to Nelson from the world’s media in New Zealand for the cup is the re-enactment match, and while the rugby has been hot on the pitch during the cup’s opening weekend, in Nelson it will be the fashion that will be as much of a highlight as the game itself. The re-enactment of New Zealand’s first game of rugby will see the Nelson Town side, featuring a number Tasman Makos, take on the youthful exuberance of Nelson College. Although, from the ‘old school’ rules to the old ‘pig skin’ ball, this will not be rugby as we know it today. The match will be played at the site of the original game – the Bontanics, where the Town team won 2-0 in the original clash.
Nelson College captain Mitchell Drummond says his players are aware of the historic significance of the game. “Everyone is really excited about it and I suppose we are just lucky to be at school at the right time. If we can’t play in the actual world cup, this is the next best thing.” He says the hardest part of the preparations wasn’t the restricting uniforms but learning the rules. “It’s a totally different game, so the boys are finding it pretty tough to pick it up.” Nelson College principal Gary O’Shea says the uniforms are not 100 percent accurate to what that first team wore but is pretty close. “Back then the school did two sport’s, boxing and gymnastics so because the town team didn’t have a uniform the College team played in their gymnastics uniform so they could tell the teams apart. That’s why they have these shashs around the waist.”

Town captain Chris Pugh says his team has also struggled to learn the new, or old, rules but is enjoying the experience. “We’ve got a good mix of guys and it will be a pretty special day. We’ve also got a winning record to keep, we don’t want to let those originals down.” But it won’t just be the strange brand of rugby that will provide talking points for spectators, outlandish facial hair and Victorian costume will set the tone for a celebration unique to our region. The game takes place on September 20, the day of Nelson’s first Rugby World Cup match, from 11am – 2.30pm. The festivities include a brass band, barbershop chorus and Victorian style fare. So if you’re interested in time-travel get the costume concepts flowing or, if you just want to see how the ‘good old boys’ played champagne rugby, get yourself along to Nelson’s Rugby World Cup celebration showpiece.

A convoy of Australian rugby fans, dubbed the ‘Great Crusade’ is heading our way. Launched by supermodel Miranda Kerr and Wallaby legend and world cup winning captain John Eales, the Great Crusade is a tour around New Zealand featuring the “craziest” Australian rugby fans.
The promotion by Australian sponsor Qantas, will see the convoy of 25 campervans reach Nelson before the Wallabies match against Russia on October 2. The visit will coincide with the expected arrival of up to 5000 Australian fans, coming to watch their side at Trafalgar
Park. They convoy plans to stay for three days. The Crusade is also sponsored by 100% Pure NZ so it will see the fans travel to tourist hot spots around the South Island, including Queenstown, Kaikoura and even Blenheim before heading back to the North Island for the latter stages of the tournament.

Rutherford boarders hit right note Bonnie Strawbridge Nelson College students sang their hearts out at the annual house singing competition recently, but it was the Rutherford Boarding House boys who took the honours for the ninth successive year. Their faultless renditions of White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes and Elton John’s Can You Feel The Love Tonight had the packed assembly hall spellbound. The Rutherford boys are a tight unit and year 12 student Alex Farrell-Davey, the group’s talented musical leader, says they have been practising their performance two to three times a week since the middle of term two. “We have no problem with participation and commitment,” he says. “The boys are all pumped. We try hard because we want to win.” The intention to continue their winning streak was never in doubt, marking their disciplined entry on stage dressed neatly in white shirts, ties

and trousers and to the accompaniment of some funky piano playing by Costa Simpson. Humour was injected with a lion and cub crawling across the stage during their song from The Lion King. Eight houses performed with Rutherford clearly taking the honours followed by fellow boarding house Barnicoat and day boy house Domett coming in seven points behind Barnicoat in third place. Robinson house won a small victory by removing themselves off their consistent bottom placing, coming sixth, a placing well received by the boys and particularly by their Housemaster, teacher Quinton Gately. Concert Master Chris Lawton organises the event and says the boys get a choice of two songs. “I pick the theme, Elton John this year, and they get a free one,” he said. The boys are judged on music, entry and exit off stage and each present a brief history of their chosen songs before their performance. Advertorial.

Hyundai most improved car manufacturer of decade Hyundai Motor Company is the car manufacturer that has improved the most over the last decade, topping Auto Express magazine’s “10 years of Driver Power” survey. “No brand has taken such a massive leap over the past decade as Hyundai,” says Acting Editor for UK based-Auto Express, Graham Hope. “Its range now is unrecognizable from 2002, and our readers regularly tell us that they are both pleased and proud to own a Hyundai, which is reflected in its meteoric rise up our Driver Power ratings.” From over 300,000 surveys received over the last 10 years of the annual Driver Power survey, Hyundai has gone from being one of the poorest performing manufacturers for customer satisfaction to one of the five best brands. It has also risen from 28th place in the best manufacturer chart in 2002 to fourth place in 2011 Hyundai New Zealand’s Chief Operating Officer, Tom Ruddenklau, says the result echoes what the company has been seeing in New Zealand in
terms of customer satisfaction. “Kiwis are proud to have a Hyundai in their driveway and happy to share their experiences,” he says. “We recently launched Hyundai Neighbourhood, an online community on our website, where people can evaluate vehicles and service before buying and talk first-hand to current owners. It’s a great forum to access honest reviews, get impartial advice and ask questions.” The quality and reliability of the Hyundai product line up has attracted numerous awards both locally and internationally in recent years. The i30 is rated fourth in the Top 50 cars of the decade, and sent shockwaves through the industry when it was named the most satisfying car in Britain in the 2010 Driver Power survey. In New Zealand the i30 won the 2009 AA Supreme Winner award. Meanwhile the recently launched Elantra has been named AutoPacific’s Ideal Compact Vehicle, while the i45 is the 2011 International Car of the Year.

Top apprentice already a boss Nelson builder Nick Skeggs has been named winner of the Upper South Island Registered Master Builders Carters 2011 Apprentice of the Year competition. Four years since leaving Nelson College to start a building apprenticeship, the 21 year-old Dusty Buildersemployee has worked on Signature show homes in Richmond. But now he is now running the show, as foreman on a private home in Mapua worth a cool $1.4 million, something his boss Brett Dixon says pays credit to how much he has come along in the past few years. “I think the main thing with guys nowadays is the passion and he’s certainly got it,” says Brett. “He’s on a big job at the moment. How much he’s come in the last four years is huge. He’s pretty much running the whole thing.” Nick will now take on the rest of the regional winners nation-wide in the race for the coveted New Zealand Registered Master Builders Carters 2011 Apprentice of the Year. His prize for winning the top of the south is $2000 to spend at Carters increasing his toolkit, a spot in Outward Bound valued at $3600, Nelson building apprentice of the year, travel and accommodation Nick Skeggs. Fashion Island manager Susan Matz. Photo: Andrew Board. Managing the city’s top fashion destination is incredibly exciting for Susan Matz, in fact she describes it as her “dream job”. Susan is a specialist retail consultant with years of managing experience with some of the country’s top brands. She took over as manager of Fashion Island two weeks ago, with founding manager Nicola Dolan now on maternity leave. Susan says the role is one she is excited about and the response from the centre’s retailers has put a further spring in her step. “They have all been fantastic and really supportive with my
vision for the centre and the ideas that I have.” She says the centre has attracted top brands and labels from around Australasia meaning local shoppers have a fabulous range of shopping, without having to travel to larger cities. “Nelson is very fortunate with Fashion Island, it is a real asset for the city and I believe we have fantastic store managers and their teams, who are proud to be apart of Fashion Island. It creates an excellent atmosphere around the centre.” Among her top priorities for Fashion Island is strengthen-
ing its spirit and making this summer and Christmas a place where every customer feels special. “I would like my legacy to be community involvement and have the centre as part of the community. I think it is so important for Nelson and for our centre to encourage that. “I am very excited coming into our spring and summer and of course Christmas, I am looking forward to making the centre a Christmas shopping wonderland. It will look fantastic.” Fashion Island will celebrate its fourth birthday in December.

A good neighbour for her mum too
Being a good neighbour for Stoke resident Robyn Hollis stretches far beyond her street, even past her suburb. In fact, it is not even confined to her city, Robyn’s good deed’s stretched all the way to Christchurch. In the wake of the garden city’s horrific February earthquake Robyn drove down to her former home city to rescue her elderly mother. When she got there she found her mum sitting outside her home with her bags packed. She packed her up to bring her to Nelson. Then she looked across at her mother’s neighbour, who in a similar situation had absolutely nowhere to go. She packed her up too. A day later she had returned to Christchurch to pick up a third elderly woman from her mother’s street. “You get down there, honestly you can’t understand until you get there, little Anne was sitting there with her bags packed and a rock through her roof, being told that she has to go and she was shaking from head to foot, crying and saying ‘but where can I go? My daughter lives in a one bedroom place in Wellington. Where can I go?’ I just looked at her and said ‘get in the car and come, we will sort the rest out later’.” That kindness, on top of her other goodneighbourly deeds, earned Robyn a Good Neighbour of the Year award for Stoke. The awards, held last month, recognise the regions top neighbours, Robyn is the fourth winner to be profiled in Nelson Weekly, a major sponsor of the event.
Robyn describes the four months at her house after the earthquake as like an army barracks. “We had two out in the sleep out, another inside. When I’d get home from work all three of them would be perched on the couch slipping on larger and lime or cherry. Honestly, it was like Last of the Summer Wine around here.” Over the four months Robyn and her husband had to help sort out their health issues, dental visits, optometrist visits and housing. She says the award should really belong to him. “This award is for my husband more than anything; he was bloody amazing, living with three elderly ladies... and a wife. He did the breakfast for everyone, driving people everywhere. I mean he had to knock to get in the bathroom for four months and for a bloke who is used to walking around in the nick most of the time it must have been pretty terrifying,” she laughs. But it was far from rescuing three elderly ladies from the earthquake that earned Robyn the award. She is known as a fantastic neighbour on her street, cooking meals for some of its older residents, looking after some of its younger and always willing to collect mail, share vegetables and a cup of tea. “Honestly, it’s easy to be a good neighbour in a street full of good neighbours and I think that’s what we’ve got. Everyone chips in and keeps an eye out for everyone else,” she says.
she has a wonderful garden and you always get a share of it,” she says. Robyn, while being slightly embarrassed by the award, says she is grateful to receive it. “But I’m just a boring person really and as I say, on this street we are lucky to have great neighbours everywhere.”
But neighbour Ann, says the award is much-deserved for Robyn. “Yes, we all look out for each other but Robyn goes far and beyond what the rest of us do. Everyone down the street always asks Robyn to do things when they are away because she is so willing and besides all that,

Ahoy wannabe sailors Nelson Yacht Club keen to boost numbers Sailing around Nelson Haven on a clear Nelson day is utter bliss, according to members of the Nelson Yacht Club. But they aren’t greedy; they want to help you get a taste of the action too. John Harris and Ralph Urwin say they often see old yachts up driveways and in backyards and they want to help people make use of their boat. “We know there is a lot of older people out there who have a boat lying around or who may be able to get their hands on one, and we are saying come down and we’ll show you how to use it,” says John. The club is offering to give yacht owners a bit of a refresher course and help them launch their boat Nelson Yacht Club members John Harris, left, and Ralph Urwin are keen for people with old yachts to of the clubs ramp. Ralph says he is keen to see more people using the facilities the club has. “As people get on a bit they tend to take up hobbies and what we are saying is forget the motorbike, come try sailing instead. It’s a lot safer and a heck of a lot more fun.” The club often runs learn to sail classes but John says this is more informal and more one-on-one. “We would just like to see more boats out on the water so if we can give people a bit of advice and a few tips then great.” The club is also after people to drive its power boats as match stewards and will provide all training required. Civil Defence planning for our emergency
The past 12 months have been huge for Civil Defence. Not just major earthquakes in Canterbury, but also large regional floods in Murchison, Golden Bay and Tapawera last year. Planning for Civil Defence in Nelson Tasman is being reviewed and this is the chance for the public to have a say about how Civil Defence is organised in our community. The Nelson Tasman Civil Defence Emergency Management Group has released its draft regional Plan for consultation. The Plan sets out how Civil Defence is organised in our region and describes how the region prepares for, responds to and recovers from emergency events. Copies of the draft plan can be viewed online on the Nelson and Tasman Council’s websites and at any Council office and library in Nelson City or Tasman District. Submissions on the Plan are to be in writing and sent to: • Nelson City Council, PO Box 645, Nelson 7040 or emailed to enquiries@ncc.govt.nz, or • Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond or email info@tasman.govt.nz Submissions can also be dropped off at Council offices throughout Nelson and Tasman, including Tasman District Council Service Centres in Motueka, Takaka and Murchison.

LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
The article “Let’s Root for the All Blacks” is not a particularly inspiring inclusion as Nelson Weekly celebrates its first birthday. Craig Lines may consider his idea is clever but it leans much more towards being crude and offensive. Presumably the paper is intended as a family paper? Therefore children and teenagers are likely to read it. How is the article going to influence their view of sex? Sex is meant to be something special between two people who love and care for

each other, not just a form of exercise. It seems to be a lack of respect for sex which is causing so many problems in New Zealand society at present. How many people these days regard babies as simply something unwanted that has turned up as the result of sex, often indulged in after too much alcohol. How many of those babies end up being abused, neglected or even killed? ‘Rooting’ is no doubt a commonly used term but one usually associated with wild pigs (no disrespect to them) and the use of the word in this instance cheapens something special. How degrading and a bad example for the youth this is and as a woman I would say: Also an insult to women. F. Francina, Nelson

Porse hosting seminar for new parents At birth a baby’s brain is only about 15 percent connected, with most of the remaining 85 percent of connections formed in the first three years of life, says childcare company Porse. The Brainwave Trust Aotearoa in association with Porse In-Home Childcare is set to unlock the secrets of children’s brain development at a free community presentation in Hope.

Foreign students worth $20m to local economy International students are worth $20million to the region’s economy, according research conducted by Nelson Marlborough Instititue of Technology. The report shows that students from foreign countries studying in Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough spent over $21.5 million during 2010. Nearly $8.5 million was spent by the secondary students and just over $13 million by tertiary students. Researchers surveyed 160 international students from 27 different countries at local secondary schools, the Nelson Aviation College and NMIT about their spending habits and experiences. Friends and family who came to visit students generated a further $700,000 in the region and the partners or guardians of students spent a further $680,000 in the year. After total tuition fees of $11.1 million, the remaining $10.4 million was spent across living expenses ($9.5million), trips and tourism ($392,000) and major purchases ($335,000).
Have Your SaY!
NMIT chief executive Tony Gray says the report shows how valuable international students are to our region. “Economically, it’s obvious that these students and their families that give them support are significant contributors to our regional economy, but their impact is far more than just economic. They bring a richness of cultural diversity, knowledge and experience to our communities while they’re here, which we should neither under-estimate nor undervalue,” he says. The survey also revealed that the top reason international students chose to study here for a tertiary qualification was because of the level of education they would receive, next was the safety of living here, followed by the lifestyle, climate and living costs. The 2010 statistics on student visa holders in the top of the south showed that the largest group of international students came from China, around 1300, followed by India with just under 800 students and South Korea, Sweden and Japan all with around 200 students.

The art up here George Shaw has been in Nelson for just over two years and in that time he has helped put Nelson on the ‘street art map’ with his passion for the craft. Photo: Jonathan McKeown. Jonathan McKeown Ever since Englishman George Shaw moved to Nelson less than two years ago everyone has been talking about street art. But what is street art? “It’s rock and roll – that’s what it is,” beams Nelson’s newest art identity. “It’s definitely not a 50 year-old lady from Mapua painting flowers,” says George. “From my point of view I look at that painting of flowers and it’s really nice, but for me, it doesn’t fire me.” “Having a beautiful young girl hugging a bomb as if it were a baby, is certainly open to interpretation, but this kind of art strikes something with a lot of people and it certainly strikes something with me.” The story that bought George and his wife Shannon to Nelson is similar to most others, they came out for a holiday and the beautiful weather and lifestyle took hold, but what they have achieved in a little over two years sets them apart from most. George is the director of Nelson’s Oi You! Street Art Exhibition, opening on September 23 at Founders Park Energy Centre. He says the exhibition is a huge asset to Nelson and will be a major draw card during the Rugby World Cup. “From the perspective of people in other parts of the country – Auckland wanted this, Christch-
urch wanted it, Wellington wanted it and we’ve kept it here.” There is also strong international interest, the main attraction for people coming from overseas is Banksy, the undisputed Da Vinci of street art, but George knows “once they get here we are going to hit them with some stuff that makes them go wow!” Apart from showing 23 works by Banksy, George has collaborated on a thought provoking installation at the exhibition and is a massive driver of street art locally, although he maintains “I’m not an artist, I’m just a geezer who’s been interested in street art for a long time.” The local street art competition has gone national in its second year, with some of the best pieces on show at the exhibition which is already arousing international attention. George puts these achievements in part, to the enthusiasm of our region. “I’ve come here and it’s brilliant because we’ve got all these people that want to help make something special.” George believes Banksy is the point of an arrow that is changing the art world and that Nelsonians are primed to be a part of this and move it forward. Not that George would hang on the serious notes for too long, he reckons “It’s just a case of having an excuse to do mad stuff really”.

NEWS IN BRIEF
• A last minute reprieve saved the University of Canterbury’s Nelson campus last year and now its teachers college is gearing up for a new intake. Last October Nelson Weekly broke news of the proposed closure but an outcry from the community, lead by local principals, forced the University to backtrack on its decision and continue operating its Nelson campus. The university is holding its open evening this Thursday, September 15 from 4.30-7pm for the 2012 intake. Local principals, lecturers, past and present students will be available to talk about programmes and answer questions. You can also contact Christine Whittall at 5489219. • Nelson police are investigating up to a dozen burglaries that have happened in just three days in Nelson. “At least eight houses have been entered during this time with electrical items, cash, alcohol, antique firearms and weapons targeted, says sergeant Shane Miles. Also taken was a 1997 Black 318i BMW yet to be registered which is still outstanding. The burglaries happened around the two Nelson Colleges and the Brook area. “This offending will only be solved with community assistance and I encourage anyone with information about these offences, or who sees suspicious activity in the area to contact police immediately,” sergeant Miles adds.

The seven piece band, formerly the Peasants of Eden, have added three new members in 2011, and drummer Chris Phillips believes that “bigger sound” can help them on their way to beating last year’s second place finish. “It’s a lot bigger. It’s an alternative big band sort of sound and the songs are more mature musically,” says Chris. “That’s how I’d describe it.” The Peasants consists of lead vocalist Georgia Nott, Abbey and Chris Phillips, Chris, Joseph Corban-Banks, Rupert Wockner, Holly Tippler and Clark Hinton. Chris says having a year’s experience under their belt has aided the band, becoming more confident. Hours of stressed rehearsal and band practices will be left on the stage of the 6000-seat Claudelands Arena. “We’re in it to win it. We’re going to go all out. Our songs are ready now; we just have to give it a good performance. The styles in the music finals are so different; it’s so eclectic that it comes down to what the judges are looking for. Coming first place in New Zealand would mean “good times ahead,” says Chris, but the band would also reap the benefits of a recorded single at York St Studios, which would be released on the country’s radio stations, and $10,000 to Peasants lead singer Georgia Nott in action at the spend at the Rockshop. Smokefreerockquest. This week they will perform “It’d be an awesome kick start in to what we in the national finals. Photo: Phillip Rollo. want to do. That would set us up.”

Girls head looking forward to new challenges
Anneka Paul When Cathy Ewing attended Christchurch Girls’ High School she first heard the inspirational story of Nelson College for Girls founding principal Kate Edger. The legendary Edger also attended Christchurch Girls High and was the first women in the British Empire to gain her Bachelor of Arts. It’s those high-achieving foundations that Cathy says drew her to Nelson and to the top job at the city’s only all-girls school. Cathy started her new role at NCG in February this year, coming to the school after a somewhat protracted period after the retirement of long-time head Alison McAlpine in 2008. When Cathy spoke to the school’s 1100 students at a commemoration service earlier this year she spoke of Kate Edger and the legacy her life has left on the school. Seven months on Cathy is happily settling into Nelson, currently developing her legacy in moving students forward and creating the very best school possible. Challenges over Nelson College for Girls’ sources of technology, facilities and parking issues have been revised and its dress code enforced. “We’ve made really good progress with tidying up the uniform; I think it has changed quite a bit since the start of the year which is effectively a symbol of what the school stands for.” In the near future Cathy says she would like to unify the school with attitudes of “working towards greater accomplish-
ments”, which she believes is an advantage of singlesexed girl’s schools. “Girls in larger amounts tend to shine more than they usually do. There are so many opportunities available for girls to strive to be the very best girls they can be.” From Cathy’s heavy experience in leadership roles she emphasises the idea that there’s nothing you can’t do with students and staff united together. “I’d like to see our school take that view so the students will too because there is nothing they can’t do.” Students spoken to by Nelson Weekly say they are positive about Cathy’s arrival and she is likewise glowing of the students. “They are fantastic, hardworking, enthusiastic and Nelson College for Girls principal Cathy Ewing is enjoying her role at the school, seven months after energetic and I’m particu- starting. This is part of the nationwide real New Zealand Festival, coinciding with Rugby World Cup 2011. They’re all iconic and really colourful.”

Pauline Shoemack has been a lawyer for 28 years, including the past 10 years in Nelson and she says she enjoys the satisfaction and challenge of now having her own legal practice and helping her clients. Pauline’s specialty is family law, with an emphasis on relationship property cases. She is a Senior Lawyer in respect of appointments from the Family Court affecting all generations. As well as being a qualified lawyer, she is a qualified mediator, giving her a great range of tools to help her clients. Pauline recommends to couples owning property when entering a new relationship or to couples separating that they discuss their legal needs with a Family Lawyer. “I’m especially keen for people to resolve their family law disputes by mutual agreement which can be through mediation” Pauline says. She says negotiated agreements are likely to be sorted out more quickly, at less cost and have long standing positive outcomes, avoiding a Judge making court orders which neither person may be happy with. Pauline is friendly, approachable and communicates easily with people. She offers clear, understandable advice and has empathy with her clients’ situations. “I’m passionate about my work and helping people resolve their family law problems,” Pauline says. As a dancer Jane Pascoe likes to keep moving, so teaching a power yoga class is the perfect fit. Jane has been dancing for 20 years and over the past 10 years has turned her passion into a job. Jane holds a Fellowship in Modern Jazz with honors, the highest teaching qualification obtainable and recently has completed teacher training in power yoga. So with all that knowledge and experience Jane is in the perfect position to teach her newest class – Power Yoga. Its name says it all. Power Yoga is a dynamic approach to the more traditional forms of yoga. The physical training is a vehicle to a greater level of self-discovery that comes from observing your reactions, mental chatter and how you react under stress during the challenging physical practice. “It is one of the several types of yoga that has the same potential of emulating a rigorous full-body workout and promotes mental stability and concentration. It bolsters strength, stamina, and flexibility. It tones your body well, and serves as a great training for all fitness levels, even athletes,” says Jane. Jane currently has a special introductory offer of four classes for just $40. Take advantage of this great offer and get your body ready for summer! With spring finally here, many can’t wait to head out again in their motorhome or caravan. Before you do though, make sure you pay a visit to Monaco Motor Homes in Quarantine Road, for everything to do with your ‘home away from home’. “Whether you need some minor repair work done on your caravan or motorhome, an awning fitted or are ready to have your own motorhome custom-built for you, Monaco Motor Homes are here to help,” says owner Mike Brown. Mike and his team at Monaco Motor Homes have many years experience in bus conversions and new build cabovers as well as repair and maintenance work on any type of recreational vehicle. The team bring a range of trade qualifications with them – from joiners, to electricians and plumbers – which means that you will get a specialist working on whatever job you need doing. “Since starting Monaco Motor Homes in 1999 we’ve done heaps of bus conversions and cabovers, but over the last few years with money being tight for a lot of people, we’ve
been doing a lot of maintenance work on caravans as well. Rather than buying new, people choose to spend money on the refurbishment of a caravan they’ve perhaps had for years. You’d be amazed by how a refurbishment can add new life to an old caravan” Mike says. Talk to Mike about bringing your motorhome or caravan up to self containment standards. They can also organise a self containment certificate. If you’re just after some products for your caravan or motorhome, visit the Monaco Motor Homes shop, which can supply a range of fridges (three way and compressor), cookers and hobs, toilets and toilet fluids, basins, water pumps, tanks, dump systems, entertainment systems and satellite dishes, 12V lights, batteries, solar systems, awnings and much more. For old fashioned service and good honest advice on anything to do with your caravan, motorhome or conversion, make sure you talk to Mike first. So give Mike a call today, or just pop in with your caravan or motorhome to discuss your needs.

Getting from Nelson to the Abel Tasman National Park just got a whole lot easier thanks to the recommencing of Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle’s ferry service this Thursday, September 15. Last year Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle started a direct boat service from Nelson City to the Abel Tasman National Park, via Kaiteriteri. Whilst the service has been tried before, Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle was the first to custom build a boat to do the trip. The Abel Tasman Crusader is the largest boat operating in the Abel Tasman National Park and the ride and comfort make the crossing from Nelson City a dream. Once again the departure from Nelson will be at 8.00am and there is a complimentary pickup and drop off from the accommodation houses in Nelson and Tahunanui. The journey takes just 50 minutes and is quicker than self drive or commercial transport. On the trip the views of both the western ranges and Nelson City is breathtaking. “One thing that we really noticed last year was the number of people that would bring their bikes across in the morning and go to the Kaiteriteri mountain bike park”, says Greg Knapp, co owner and skipper. “They would spend the day there and then either return with us or bike back to Nelson. This sort of thing really opens up the region to cycle tourism, especially with the new national cycleway happening”. “The service is so versatile with a number of Motueka residents heading to Nelson for the night and returning the next morning” said Greg. “It opens up the whole Nelson Tasman region. Tasman people can head to Nelson for the movies, dinner or a special occasions and stay over, returning with us in the morning”. Even with the uncertain economic times, Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle has been buoyed by the feedback and is committed to the service.

Runners on track After running away with both the North Island and New Zealand cross country championship titles, Mike Lowe will now be running his way to Malta in 2012. The Nelson College runner has been selected for the ISF World Secondary School Cross Country Championship in Malta in March, along with Nelson College for Girls
student Phillipa Dalley. The 15 year-old credits his quick rise to success to coach Greg Lautenslager. “That’s definitely the main thing,” says Mike. “Every year I’ve progressively gotten better and better and this year I’ve finally managed to get a national medal on the track, and this cross country season I’ve been at the top of my age group and running the best I have.” Mike admits he didn’t even know where Malta was, but will have to get more accustomed to the country off the coast of Italy come March. His selection came the week prior to winning the M16 cross country championship in Christchurch. So at the time it was a bit of a surprise, but looking back it was a masterstroke from the New Zealand selectors. But before Mike heads to Europe he is targeting more success, this time in the coming New Zealand track season. He is looking to break his personal best in the 3000m down to 8 minutes 45 seconds, and has his sights set on the 3000m/1500m double at the national secondary school championship in December, before taking on the world. “It will be interesting to see how I place myself against the world. It will obviously be a good experience to compete SPEEDY: Nelson College runner Mike Lowe against the best people has been selected for the ISF World Second- my age in the world and I’m really looking forary School Cross Country championships. ward to it.” Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Hockey team shines at tournament
The Nayland College 1st XI Girls Hockey team has won the Jenny Hair Cup at the National Secondary Schoolgirl tournament in Blenheim. After an initial loss to a strong St Mary’s College team they had a 5-1 win over Waiuku College and a 4-1 win over Marlborough Girls’ 2nd XI to qualify second in their pool. In the quarter final they withstood strong attack from Mountainview College before slotting home two quick goals late in the first half to seize the advantage. In the second half they held out sustained attack from Mountainview to win the game 2-0. Hanna van der Giessen was named player of the day by tournament officials for her work on the field. In the semi-finals on Thursday they played Roncalli College from Timaru who had placed second in the last two years. The game see-sawed but Naylands’ tactic of marking out Roncalli’s
playmaker started to play dividends with increasing pressure being put on the Roncalli goal. After an excellent ball into the circle Nayland was awarded a stroke after the Roncalli defender blocked a certain goal with her foot. Ella Orr, the Nayland Captain, converted the opportunity to give Nayland a 1-0 lead. The second half was very even, but nerves were high as Roncalli was awarded a penalty corner on full time. Strong defence saw the ball over the backline for a victory. In the final Nayland faced a strong Lincoln High School team who was unbeaten at tournament. The Nayland team is a very well balanced team that is made up of mainly Year 11 and Year 12 students. They have been building together as a team over the past three years and have improved their placing in this tournament from 15th in 2009 in Greymouth, to 8th last year in Dunedin.

Coastal race promises to be a classic Since 1994 one event stands top of the list on any trailrunners agenda and Saturday’s 18th Abel Tasman Coastal Classic has another 300 capacity field on the Awaroa start line. Nelson has 33 lining up with the rest travelling from all around the country plus eight from overseas. The Canterbury region (108) leads the charge followed by Wellington (55) and Auckland (38) with the other interesting statistic being the number of women (119) intending to complete the 36km journey back to Marahau along the nation’s most popular coastal track. The Men’s race should feature a Nelson Trifecta – Phil Costley, Simon
Mardon and Graeme Taylor fighting it out for top three honours. Both Costley and Mardon have won the event three times, Costley the quickest by over twelve minutes and his pedigree should put him in front again. Taylor is the ‘wildcard’. He’s in form, having won Escape from Tane’s Forest and Captain Cook’s Landing already this year, and it will be interesting to see how he competes, coming up against the other two for the first time over the equivalent of a marathon. The ‘Survivors’, Chris Gates, Owen Rowse and Colin Rolfe, all line up again, content to just making the finish line for the 18th time and main-

Get a lush, healthy and beautiful lawn with scarification If you are a lawn enthusiast then scarifying (de-thatching) your lawn should be given top priority in your spring lawn maintenance. Dethatching is essential to maintain a lush, healthy lawn. Thatch is the layer of built-up plant material between the green top growth and the roots of grass plants. Thatch develops naturally as lawn grasses grow and slough off roots, shoots and leaves. Some thatch helps protect the roots, but excessive thatch prevents moisture, oxygen and nutrients from penetrating the soil. One problem with a thick layer of thatch is that newly sown seed will root in the thatch layer -- not the soil. Thatch doesn't provide the same insulation as soil, so the roots of such plants dry out quickly, and the lawn dies. A heavily thatched lawn dries out faster so you have to water more frequently. To determine whether your lawn has too much thatch, remove a plug of lawn, and measure the layer of thatch between the top growth and the root zone. If
it measures more than 1/2" in depth, you should dethatch the lawn. You may need to perform this chore only once every two to three years. There are several tools that can be used to remove the thatch layer, but contrary to popular belief, a metal spring rake isn't one of them. The tines can't penetrate the foliage to reach the surface of the soil. This type of rake is good for removing fallen leaves, but not thatch. To remove thatch from a small lawn, use a scarifier, which will slice into the lawn and bring up vast amounts of dead material. Nelson Bays Chainsaws and Mowers sell scarifiers, but they acknowledge that with a rrp of $1295, this may be a costly outlay for a machine you will only use a few times a year. For that reason they have a scarifier available for hire at affordable rates, with options for half or full day hires. Call in to see the team, take advantage of their expert advice and get scarifying for a great looking lawn this summer.

Suburbs take treble Self proclaimed former bridesmaids of Nelson Bays Football, the Nelson Suburbs 2nd XI have finally stepped out of the shadows and are one trophy away from clinching the treble. With the Nelson Pine Industries men’s second division title wrapped up in the bag, going undefeated, winning the Top of the South; a tournament played between the top four Marlborough first division sides and the top four Nelson second division sides , it’s just the Gould & Tout Trophy that eludes the team in blue. Player-coach Brendan Hodgson says the majority of the team have played summer sports together and gelled instantly when teaming up for the football season. “We really just got going from the start of the season, it didn’t take that time to get used to a new team,” he says. “Traditionally we’ve been the bridesmaids, [FC Nelson] United Reserves have dominated for years, and we’ve always been there or thereabouts and fallen at the final hurdle.”
But the treble could be a bridge too far with the cricketers in the side becoming unavailable before a potential Gould & Tout final on September 24 and NBF unwilling to budge, despite a prolonged finish to the season. Strike partnership of Dylan Wells and Danny Walsh has been instrumental in the side’s stellar season, scoring 30 goals between them. Brendan says the experience of captain Hamish Lewis has been invaluable, the skipper after-all being a Mainland Premier League regular as late as 2010. “With a guy like that that’s got such a good workrate, the rest of the guys feed off it.” Brendan also credited former Southern Premier League defender Luke Toynbee has another standout. “They just wanted to come in play in a probably more social atmosphere, few beers, good guys; it’s just been an awesome season on and off the park.” The Gould & Tout semi finals will be held this weekend.

Hockey finals wrap up season A smorgasbord of elite hockey was on show at Saxton Field this weekend as the premier club finals were held along with representative matches between provincial rivals Nelson and Marlborough. Although the weather didn’t play its part the competitors were willing as some tight matches were mixed with genuine baths. In the club finals, division one Men’s side Beawai beat Federal 6-5 on strokes as regular time finished in a 1-all deadlock. The Federal division one Women’s team were too good for Aotea Kiwi turning a slender half-time lead into a 4-1 vic-
tory. In division two strokes were needed to separate both matches as Federal and Endeavours finished at three apiece, Federal held their nerve to win the shootout 3-1. Huia claimed the Women’s title 5-3 on strokes over Tasman. Honours were shared between the regional rivals in the representative matches with Nelson trouncing Marlborough 8-0 to win the Ken Beach Cup for Senior A Women. The fortunes were reversed as Marlborough Senior A Men took the McCarthy Cup in a 4-2 over Nelson.

Netball Ferns finale A successful season for the Future Ferns culminated on Saturday at Saxton Courts when 63 teams played their final games. Nelson Netball Development Officer, Trish Lowe organises the programme with Year 4 and 5 teams playing on Wednesday afternoons, while Year 6 play on Saturday mornings. Murchison travels on Wednesdays, leaving school early to play in the second round, while Tapawera enter a team in the Saturday competition. The Wednesday programme sees Trish providing the team coaches with a ten minute drills and skills session, which is followed by a game of two ten minute halves. The games are mainly umpired by Intermediate players, with the girls from Nelson Prep, Waimea Intermediate and Broadgreen assisting. The entire team from Waimea Intermediate 8B and their coach and manager are there every week. There are also a group of adults on hand to support the coaches and the young umpires. Saturday play sees the teams stepping up to the
regular four ten minute quarter games. Future Ferns is not a girls only sport as there are four boys playing as well. Saturday had a “Silver Fern” theme where teams were asked to make a banner or flag and come dressed with silver accessories and face paint. There were some amazing banners with Mapua & Districts Minis taking out first prize, with St Joe’s Golden Kiwis and Central School Aim High as runners up. The day got underway with a group warm up session led by the successful Waimea College 9A team and their coach, Anne Wicken. It was great to see all the teams getting into the swing of the music as they strutted their stuff. Trish usually selects one player of the year however the standard was so high this year she could have selected ten! Lydia Swaney from Saint Pauls got the nod, with team mate Claudia Leonard and Nayland School’s Faith McDonald as runners up. Anyone wishing to assist Trish with either coaching or umpiring should contact her at the Nelson Netball Office on 547 4450.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Four container vessels and 16 large fishing vessel movements were almost all of the shipping activity in a very quiet week last week as shipping companies amend a few schedules. The Sea Patroller for the slipway and the barge to be moved and used for storage were the only additional movements. • During the container shipping movements however I was disappointed to see a kayaker almost playing “chicken” with the ship as he paddled towards the bow of the ship whilst the ship was inbound. Given the tragic recent deaths of kayakers around the country I do encourage you to give the ships a wide berth. Try and paddle outside the main channel as you never know when a ship is going to turn, in this instance the pilot delayed his turn so that the stern of the ship did not swing close to the kayaker. • Spring is here and with it will come some strong winds. Recently in other waters some people have been upturned from their fishing
dinghy possibly as a result of a change in the sea state or weather. • Always wear a life jacket, always be prepared , let someone know where you are going, when you will be back, and take some form of communication with you. • Here is an interesting question: when someone is running late to get back to you from a boating trip, how long do wait before you raise the alarm. (See next week for my thoughts). • You might be interested in attending a meeting of Nelson Dawn Breakers Fishing Club, on Sunday October 2 at the Nelson Suburban Club, at 2pm. I will be there to advise on the new by-laws and boating regulations. Others will be there to advise on kayak fishing, an event I strongly recommend before summer. Hope you can make it Remember when it comes to boating if in doubt, don’t go out. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

tailgate parties are an integral part of USA’s sporting culture with thousands flocking to car parks before American football games for a barbecue, even if they don’t have tickets to the game itself. “As we’ve sort of found out it’s quite an intriguing culture and celebrations to get behind,” says Paul. “Whether it’s MTV a culture or Hollywood movie, America has played a huge role in my upbringing for sure and a lot of other people’s. I think this is our chance to get together and show what affect this has had on us.” With a series of promotional ‘mini tailgate’ parties being held around the region in the past weeks, Paul says the response has been fantastic, and by those results alone is expecting a huge day come September 27. Please note, this is a licensed event. No BYO alcohol will be permitted. “Keep it clean Richmond.” For the cheapest and easiest ride to the game, match goers are encouraged to take the Park n Ride service which will be operating out of the venue. 25 - 26 - 27 SEPTEMBER 2011 Park up at the show grounds and jump aboard a USA themed team bus for a uniquely styled service to the big game and back. Catching the Bus is the best option for getting to the game as car parking will be very limited in the city. Park n Ride bus tickets can be purchased from the Richmond Mall Information Kiosk and also at the event - if still available - for $4 each way and $8 return. The bus will depart from Richmond at 5:20pm and 6:20pm for a 5:50pm and 6:50pm arrival at the i-site, in time for a 7:30pm kick off. If you are planning on catching the bus then it is encouraged to purchase tickets from the Richmond Park Showgrounds - Lower Queen St - Richmond Richmond Mall as soon as possible. “The bus service will be the easiest way for American fans to get to and from the game. Town is expected to be very busy on game-day and finding a car park may prove difficult.” Men’s Shed Waimea Inc will be volunteering American in the car parking duties at the event which FOOD STALLS is brought to you by Nelson A&P and other community groups which have gotten in behind the event. Headlining the afternoons on stage entertainment is the local dynamic acoustic duo: The Gypsy Pickers. Fusing together a selection of rock, reggae, bluegrass, Celtic, Pacifica, jazz, blues and roots, their show is part join-in novelty, part magical songs for the soul and part high energy, crowd-rocking jams, highlighted by jaw-dropping lead work from front man Ron Valente, and held together by accomplished guitarist and front woman Lindy Valente. Their hot musicianship, infectious rhythms, sublime vocals and a vast repertoire, ensure their wide appeal amongst those who’ve had the sheer enjoyment of seeing them live. The duo has an intuitive chemistry between them that creates an uplifting electricity. Playing at both the Block and Tailgate Parties is the high energy, high intensity fourReturn transport: Showgrounds - Trafalgar Park piece rockabilly band the Krazy Kats. Secure Overnight Car Parking Fronted by lead vocalist Johnny Jessop, and Park n Ride Tickets available complemented by guitarist Christian Jessop, from the Richmond Mall drummer Pete O’Connell, and slap bassist Callum Kershaw, the Katz have been brought up on a diet of raw rockabilly - making for a recipe of pure pumping entertainment. There’s only one way to spend your pre-game before the Eagles take on the Azzuri at Trafalgar Park on September 27 - and that’s at the All Star Tailgate Party. The final day of the festival gears up towards the much anticipated Pool C match, as Richmond Showground’s host a traditional American Tailgate Party. ‘Park up and Party’ with an afternoon and early evening full of pre match activities, including classic kiwi games immersed with American tailgate traditions. Live music, performances and an opportunity to sample the excellent regional cuisine, beverages and hospitality are included in the festival finale. A selection of classic kiwi activity challenges will also be on offer to test physical ability and mental patience. Com-

Show your international allegiance in the biggest ‘tug of war’ competition ever to be competed for in Richmond as Italian supporters heave it out against American supporters. There will be competition prizes for the best dressed American and best dressed Italian supporters.
