Fashion Island manager Nicola Dolan wonders where the time went, but looking back at three years of business, is thrilled with how the city’s largest retail centre has established itself in Nelson. “We created something that Nelson had never seen before and I think it’s taken a while for people to discover us, but we have found our niche and are going really well.” Nicola says this past year has been a growth one for the centre with four new stores and each month improving on the last. “We’ve had growth most of this year and the last three months have had growth in the double digits which is phenomenal. Coming to Fashion Island is a lifestyle choice, it’s more than the final purchase, it’s treating yourself to a day out with your girlfriends or to a nice cup of coffee and browsing the shops. That’s why we are unique.” Fashion Island celebrates its third birthday this Saturday from 10am to 2pm with giveaways and children’s activities.

• Mountain bikers will be allowed on the Heaphy Track for the first time from next May, the New Zealand Conservation Authority announced last week. But, it may not last. The authority approved a revised Kahurangi National Park Management Plan which allows mountain biking trials on three park tracks, including the Heaphy Track during the five-month winter season. The mountain biking trials will run on the Heaphy Track between 1 May and 30 September and trials continue until the end of 2013.

• The Saxton Field athletics and cricket pavilion has secured a $400,000 grant from the Lottery Community Facilities Fund, a welcome boost for the region, says Nelson MP Nick Smith. “This is tremendous news for cricket and athletics, for ratepayers, and for the building industry. This contribution also takes the pressure off Nelson and Tasman ratepayers who have invested millions in the Saxton complex and would otherwise be asked to help fund this $400,000.”

Amalgamation hearings start today Aldo Miccio’s campaign for Nelson City Council to join forces with Tasman District will today take a massive step forward, as the Local Government Commission begins hearing submissions on the issue. It was Aldo’s successful petition to look at the governance options – which attracted more than 10,000 votes, or ten percent of the voters in each council district – that began the process by the commission to whether a union of the councils would be beneficial to ratepayers. That answer, while not likely be resolved this week, will be a lot clearer after the public hearings at various locations around Tasman and Nelson. What is clear, even before the commissioners arrived to town, is that the two councils themselves sit on very opposite sides of the

fence. NCC favours a union, TDC vehemently opposes it. Aldo says he is happy with the submission by NCC, which he had no involvement in. He says it looks at the pros and cons of the issue, unlike the TDC submission which focuses purely on the supposed negatives of a merger. “I think we have our ducks in a row and I’m looking forward to speaking to the commissioners and letting them know why I think amalgamation is essential for the region.” The first of the hearings is in Murchison this morning, Tuesday, and in the Nelson City Council chamber this afternoon. Hearings continue through the week, until Saturday. Aldo says he is looking forward to furthering the process.

Farmers market happy at Fashion Island A year ago organisers of the Nelson Farmers Market faced a tough choice, stay at Founders or move to the fashion hub of Nelson. Its shuffle to the latter proved to be a winner, rapidly growing in stall numbers and customers ever since and this week it celebrates its first birthday at its new location in Fashion Island. The weekly market says its thrilled with the past year and the support its enjoyed from Nelson shoppers. “There is a really good vibe about the place and the product is great quality as well, which attracts a lot of people,” says organiser Lynn Mc-

Connell. The Nelson Farmers Market is a traditional farmers market; all produce must be grown or made by the person selling it at the market. It means customers are getting fresh produce right from the source says Lynn. “We have a low carbon footprint as well because it all is local produce.” When the market moved to Fashion Island it had ten stalls, now is has upwards of 35, although it varies depending on the seasons. It will celebrate its birthday this Wednesday and is open from 12noon.

Lions collect king-haul as coins pour in Andrew Board Ever heard of Baden? Neither had Nelson North Lion Paul Lunberg, but finding a coin from the former European country, along with various other nations, has been just one of the side benefits to the Lions latest project – Heads Up for Kids. Coins from Baden (which became a part of Germany in 1871), Sachsen (another former European country) and even coins from Napoleon’s France minted in 1813 have been handed in by Nelsonians to help the Lions national project to raise money for young New Zealanders. The campaign to collect old coins and banknotes, foreign currency and hoarded loose change has been a hit around the country. Launched in July this year, Lions have now raised more than $100,000, by asking people to dig out and donate their old coins, banknotes and any foreign currency and deliver it to Resene ColorShops and retailers throughout the country. All copper halfpennies, pennies and cents are ending up at A W Fraser’s Christchurch foundry for recycling and this week, a tonne of old currency is off to the Reserve Bank to be redeemed dollar for dollar and a

tonne of foreign currency is being shipped offshore. Any old or collectable notes or coins are being sold to coin collectors. Other rare coins and notes found around the country have included a 1752 Franc note found in Waiapu and an 1860 American dollar in Dannevirke. Other collectibles include a commemorative Rouble from the USSR 1980 Olympic Games and mint sets from a number of countries; Canada, Egypt and Tuvalu. Alan Boaden, head of currency, The Reserve Bank of New Zealand estimates there’s more than $100 million of pounds, shillings and pence, old decimal coins and banknotes sitting around in drawers or cupboards in households throughout New Zealand. Nelson clubs and collecting the final tins and hope to round up the campaign by the end of the year. Paul says he has been impressed by the finds and the amount Nelson people have donated. “In Nelson alone, we’ve hauled more than 100kg of coins to the bank and hundreds of notes. It’s been really fantastic.”

Deputy mayor aiming to be the great translator Nelson city’s deputy mayor Ali Boswijk speaks to Nelson Weekly about her new role, amongst various others, in our series your people, at work. I juggle several jobs at the moment, as well as being deputy mayor, I’m also a mum to two teenage boys and I do some communication work for my directory company, New Zealand News. where things are at. I love full council meetings and when we are debating because that is where it all comes together really, I think everyone has their idea on something and you go through life and you’ve got certain things that you believe in certain ways, you know, your life has influenced you in such a way so you think about things in a particular way and then you get in a room-full of people and they think about things completely differently and you think ‘oh, I never thought about it that way before’. I love it, it opens your mind up to all sorts of other things. It’s also the whole point I think, otherwise everybody would pay some money to an administrator somewhere who would decide where to spend the money. This is the point where the community can hopefully get representation through the councilors. We are clearly a very diverse community so we have a diverse council. I have enjoyed the step up in responsibility, I really enjoyed the last three years on council and now having the opportunity I’m enjoying the new role. Deputy mayor has an opportunity to be a sort of liaison with the community because I think as mayor you do get caught up with so many things you have to attend. It’s a good opportunity to get out and talk to people and translate what people think is happening in council and what actually is happening, because it is often quite a mismatch. Part of my mission for the next three years is to be a great translator.

Historic Nelson images brought to life thanks to Museum project This week Nelson and Waimea Weekly newspapers have begun a partnership with the Nelson Provincial Museum with its Glass Plate Negative Project. The partnership aims to bring the museum’s impressive and extensive photographic collection to the

newspaper’s readers. Each week two photos of the museum’s “glass plate” collection will run in both newspapers, reaching a massive 30,000 homes in Nelson and Tasman. The goal of the project is to expose the photographs to more people and get

some feedback on the collection. In some cases very little is known about the images published so readers will be invited to submit any information they may have to help with identification. To help support the project you can also sponsor three photos by

donating $10 to the museum. The project is one of the most extensive the museum is currently working on. It will relocate over 120,000 glass plates from its photographic collection into new industry standard drawers. As part of the process the plates will be

digitally photographed and information about each plate electronically recorded for use in the Museum’s collection database. Information on how to send information or donate will be printed on the banners above and below the photographs each week.

Do you recognise the people? The setting? The event? Can you tell us more? Please contact: history@museumnp.org.nz or phone 03 5489588

Nelson to Kaiteriteri

Ferry Service Launch

Travelling to Abel Tasman National Park has just got a whole lot more interesting thanks to an innovative project to ferry people across Tasman Bay from Nelson to Kaiteriteri. Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles’ new vessel, the Crusader, has been purpose-built for the journey and can take 150 people from Wakefield Quay to Kaiteriteri and from there to various stops in the Park. The catamaran is nearing completion and

is due to start service between Nelson and Kaiteriteri before Christmas. The journey is estimated to take around an hour one way and will cost $40 for a return trip say the family-owned company that has been working around the clock to get the new boat finished for the summer season. It will depart Nelson at 8.15am every morning, once in Kaiteriteri she will run two trips into Park, returning to Nelson at 4.30pm arriving 5.30pm.

A team of skilled engineers led by Keith Knapp and Paul Smith has made amazing progress to build the catamaran in such a short time frame. The construction has been a seven day affair since it was laid down. During that time only one weekend has been taken off. “We are so pleased at how smoothly the project has gone”, says Keith Knapp, co-owner of Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle. “The team of engineers we have is second to none. Their dedication

and skill has been in no small part responsible for the way this project has gone.” The impressive new look vessel has been moved out of the construction shed for the final finishing touches to be added. Andy Lowe from Imagecreators in Riwaka has been responsible for the simple yet stunning design of artwork. “With the progress to date we are still on track for launching mid December” said Paul Smith co-owner. “Such a large project can certain have

its challenges yet the team has pulled together and overcome these.” The Crusader is the flagship of the Kaiteriteri to Totaranui and return run. She will be departing twice a day for the full length of the park. Crusader has been designed by Barnett Offshore Design, the designer behind the full Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle fleet. Sea Shuttle vessels are renowned for their stability and comfort and are ideal for crossing the Tasman Bay. All Sea Shuttle vessels incorporate innovation and technology never seen before on this coastline. From the unique alloy planked hulls to the belt driven, forward facing propellers, these give a stable and environmentally friendly ride at maximum efficiency. The smooth ride and design eliminates much of the sideway rolling and wake issues associated with other vessels crossing the Tasman Bay and operating in the park. The Nelson service is complimentary to the existing service that Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle runs.

Proudly Supporting Abel Tasman Sea Shuttles and “The Crusader”

“Many visitors to the area stay in Nelson and then experience the Abel Tasman in a day. The new boat gives the opportunity for these visitors to have a choice of coach or boat to the Park,” says sales and marketing manager Mark Chapman. “We are also encouraging those people that stay in Nelson to consider spending a few days closer to the Park exploring the Abel Tasman region and all it has to offer. It opens up many opportunities for accommodation and activity providers to enhance the stay of visitors in our region.” Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle is one of the few operators to have not brought people directly from

Nelson to the park. “We have, and will continue to, support the local Abel Tasman region as this is our home” says Paul. To reinforce that commitment to the Abel Tasman Region Sea Shuttle has spent to winter felling and poisoning wilding pines in the Abel Tasman National Park. “As a founding member of the Abel Tasman Birdsong Trust we understand that the national park is a huge asset for the region”, says Greg Knapp, coowner. Greg led a team of bushmen into the park and destroyed an estimated 7500 wild pine trees. This was all done on a voluntary basis as part of Sea Shuttles commitment to the environment they work in.

“Since people became aware of the Nelson crossing, many of them have asked why, when so many have tried and failed” says Keith. “The simple answer is that we can design and build a boat specifically for the crossing with both comfort and speed”. Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle is a family owned business that has revolutionised the way that visitors experience the Abel Tasman National Park. Our locally made, and purpose built, craft were the first to design and use the walk on/walk off hydraulic ramp and also the catamaran design. Our vessels have no steps and stairs allowing for easy access. Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle continues to set the benchmark for visitor experiences and innovation. In fact, the designs and innovations led to Abel Tasman Sea Shuttle making it to the finals of the Tourism Awards, one of only 34 companies throughout New Zealand to do so. After three keenly contested heats at Motueka, Stoke and Murchison over the past two months, the top 12 teams fought out the final of the Bowater Group Top Teams series at Upper Moutere on Sunday. The Signature Homes Warriors were the winners of the senior section after coming through the Stoke heat in October. One of the organisers, Hayden Bryant of Sport Tasman, says the event, based on the tremendously popular Top Town which screened on television during the 1980s, was very well supported by participants and spectators and may be extended to include Marlborough as a Top of the South competition next year.

Stoke/Nayland take two-day title A resilient Stoke/Nayland side peaked at the right time as they dominated challengers Waimea Toi Toi United in the two-day cricket final, reaching a formidable total of 390/4 to claim their fourth consecutive title. It was all Car Company Stoke/Nayland from the get go, and thanks to some impressive bowling from Nathan Todd and some aggressive field placings, the match was won and lost in the first session. Nathan picked up four wickets as Sprig & Fern WTTU’s batting order

collapsed finishing their innings all out for a meager 98 runs. “The way that Toddy [Nathan Todd] bowled was just outstanding. As far as a team unit goes, that’s the best we’ve bowled in a long time. We backed it up in the field with good catches, and direct hits,” says captain Ryan Edwards. Mark Douglas top scored with an unbeaten 179 to before WTTU captain Aaron Mallinson pulled the plug at lunch on the second day to hand Stoke/Nayland a well deserved victory.

National League football coming back to Nelson Phillip Rollo National League football is on its way to Nelson for the first time since the turn of the century. But this time it will be the red and black of Canterbury United walking out of the changing rooms titled ‘home.’ On January 16, the newly named ASB Premiership is coming to town with Canterbury United hosting Team Wellington at Trafalgar Park, just down the road from Nelson United’s old stomping ground, Guppy Park. Ten years have passed since the last National League game took place in Nelson. But decades before that, Nelson boasted one of the strongest squads in New Zealand. Coached by Kevin Fallon, father of All White Rory Fallon and assistant coach of the 1982 All White world cup squad, Nelson United made their National League debut when they were promoted from the Central League for the 1977 season. Football in Nelson was on the rise. Alongside Kevin, were players ready to make their name on the global stage. Soon to be 1982 FIFA World Cup squad members Richard Wilson, Peter Simonsen and Keith Mackay lined up with fellow New Zealand internationals Kenny Cresswell, Ceri Evans, Paul Brydon and current Nelson Suburbs coach John Slotemaker, in the most impressive football line up to grace Nelson soil. But while Nelson United took out the 1977 Chatham Cup final 1-0 against Mount Wellington AFC before finishing second place as hosts to Manurewa AFC the following year, National League football was never its strong point, consistently finishing in the bottom half of the competition and battling relegation and financial difficulties. Nelson finished seventh in its first two seasons in the top division before improving just the one spot the following year. This time with a teenaged Ricki Herbert in the squad. It was a tough stint in the National League and by 1980 Nelson finished last place and were rel-

egated, not for the first time. As the years passed so did the players and Nelson continued to jump between Central League and National League. Paul and John along with others still currently involved with football in Nelson, Steve Bignall and Lindsay Scott were in for the long haul. In 1988 despite finishing 13th, Nelson United was relegated because Guppy Park did not meet New Zealand Football criteria. But soon enough they bounced back. After the 1995 season there were major changes: Nelson United merged with Nelson Suburbs in the National Summer Soccer League. And Electric Solomon Island international Batram ‘Batman’ Suri was the new star. Batram was an icon in New Zealand football. He contributed 13 goals in the 1996 season. Nelson battled their way through the competition until the league finally folded in 1999. Nelson Suburbs moved from the Central League to the New Zealand South Island League. The Ansett National Club Championship featured on the millennium. Nelson despite finishing seventh were relegated due to financial reasons. Solomon Island import Commons Menapi won golden boot with 15 goals. And that was the last time Nelson saw National League football, until now. There are striking similarities with the Nelson United of old and the current Canterbury United side. All White Aaron Clapham will be flying the representative flag come January, while devastating Nelson Suburbs striker Gagame Feni will hope to light up the sunshine capital like Batram did and Paul Brydon’s nephew Coey Turipa, who is the second choice goal keeper, could make an appearance after showing strong form for the Canterbury youth team. Nelson may not have an ASB Premiership team, but there is no doubting the legacy the city has left on football in this country. If the spectators turn up, history could be made again.

IN BRIEF FooTbAll Nayland College forward Alex Ridsdale has been confirmed in the New Zealand squad for FIFA Under-17 World Cup qualifying. Alex was named in the preliminary squad in October, but has since been fighting for final selection at training camps in Auckland. The Young All Whites’ first game is against Vanuatu on January 10. If they win the Oceania Football Confederation U-17 Championship they will gain automatic qualification to the World Cup in Mexico later in the year. ToUch Nelson College for Girls has produced an outstanding result at Nationals, finishing third in New Zealand. The senior side was aiming for a top four finish and was delighted at its final placing. RUgbY The manager of the Italian Rugby team is in Nelson tomorrow, Wednesday, checking out facilities ahead of the Rugby World Cup next year. Italy is one of three teams Nelson will host for the cup and they will base themselves here for 21 nights during the Pool Phase of the Tournament. They play two matches at Trafalgar Park on 20 and 27 September 2011. FooTbAll Another stellar performance for the Nelson Suburbs teenage contingent in the Canterbury United side has seen them qualify for the National Youth League final. A Billy Scott header in the 52nd minute gave the home side a 1-nil victory over Waikato FC. Adam Smith picked up the assist after his free kick connected with Billy’s head.

Volleyballers let emotion flow Screaming and crying is not something you would associate with healthy competition. But the Nayland College Junior Girls Volleyball team say it was worth it after beating good friends Nelson College for Girls 10A at the South Island Junior Volleyball Division Two Championship. Nayland College took the final 2-1, and screamed with joy at full-time. “They started crying. We felt really bad. But the thing is we would’ve been crying if we lost. Instead it was the best feeling ever. We were ecstatic. We were screaming. I think that’s what made them cry,” says player Jessica Young. Good friends off the court, and good friends on it. But when it comes to the

actual game play, the rivalry breaks through. “We hang out with them. We pull faces at each other through the net. It’s healthy competition,” she says. Captain Sara Reidie was a stand out throughout the tournament and says the girls enjoyed the win. “Amazing. Bloody awesome.” But all the girls credit the result as a big team effort, and to the chocolate milk they drunk after each game. “We would come back and drink like two or three cups of it. I think it was the secret ingredient,” says Jessica. The Nayland College 9A Boys team finished sixth place in Division One and were the highest placed year nine team in the boy’s grade.
