New race proves to be a hit

Hundreds of people ran, jumped, slid and swam around a muddy Wairua Warrior obstacle course on Saturday, giving the fledging event a great start.

The race was held at Happy Valley Adventures in Cable Bay where entrants could compete in either a six kilometre obstacle course or a double lap at 12km.

Event organiser Greg Witika says he is pleased with how the event took shape. “The day has been fantastic. We had a really good contingent of people coming through for our first event.”

He says he is already thinking ahead to next year’s course and making it an annual event. A video of the day is online at nelsonlive.co.nz

House fires ‘a concern’ A third house fire in as many weeks has the fire service sounding more warnings as they prepare for their busiest time of year.

The start of winter is a traditionally busy time for house fires and Nelson station officer Darren Shackleton says people need to take precautions.

The warning comes after fire destroyed an-

The fire started at around 3am on Monday and quickly spread through Kelly Huang and La Per’s St Lawrence St home.

The size of this year’s vintage may be well down but winemakers around the Nelson region are hoping it will be high on quality after they completed harvesting this week.

A cold December and dry summer has resulted in poor flowering and low yields throughout the region with most growers reporting decreases of 30 to 50 per cent on last year. However, the low yields could well result in excellent wines with Waimea Estates general manager Ben Bolitho saying the vintage “is small but it is great”.

“The weather for the whole of spring was not optimal for wind pollinated fruit,” Ben says. “It was cold, especially during early December when the vines were flowering so this year we harvested just under 1350 tonnes compared with 2437 tonnes last year.

“But the thing about a smaller yield is that the quality is really good with a high fruit concentration. On the back of a gold medal winning sauvignon blanc of 2014, we’re really looking forward to what this vintage will bring us.”

Neudorf ’s viticulturalist Richard Flatman says their sauvignon blanc yields were down on average with pinot noir and chardonnay also “down a bit”.

“We only had 45 per cent of our average rainfall from July to December and it was cold and windy so the yields are down. But at this stage the fruit is looking really good - it has good depth of flavour.”

Richard says it was also a season of firsts at Neudorf with the vineyard having its “first frost in 38 years” and the earliest start and finish to harvesting.

Te Mania’s John Harrey says they planned to finish harvesting the last two or three varieties on their vineyards at the weekend and although yields were down “about 30 per cent on last year”, the quality was good.

“A lot of the fruit has been very good quality but we would have liked a little more. The fruit ripened very quickly too so we were putting in some long days to get it all harvested.”

Crash prompts calls for lower speed limit

A group of Lower Queen St residents want the 50kmh speed limit extended to McShane Rd to make their street safer, after another accident at the Richmond black spot last week.

Two people suffered minor to moderate injuries after their vehicles collided on Lower Queen St last Wednesday. It is the latest in a long list of accidents that includes two fatal crashes on the busy stretch of road, and the residents say the best way to make it safer is to reduce the speed limit from 70kmh to 50kmh.

“There are so many cars and trucks on this road and they are going too fast, especially with all the pedestrians,” Rebecca Gibbs says. “It’s pretty much a residential area and they are still allowed to drive at 70kmh - it’s a little scary.”

Rebecca says that Lower Queen St also has a school and church within the 70kmh zone. A turn off into the Lower Queen St Health Centre can also cause traffic to back-up and create problems, she says.

Another resident, Peter Field, who has lived on Lower Queen St for 19 years, says he can recall at least six serious accidents near his house. He says it has always been a dangerous

“Drivers have a free left turn (into the Richmond Deviation) so they come up Lower Queen St to miss the lights on the State Highway,” Peter says.

“Now there’s so many trucks and cars going too fast and no footpaths.” Peter says he has sent “several submissions” to the Tasman District Council asking for the 50kmh speed limit to be extended to “at least McShane Rd”, but has not had a response. He says there is no “distinct change” in the road or the level of development in that section of the 70kmh zone that justifies lowering the speed limit to 50kmh.

Chris, who is a competitive weightlifter, says Waimea Village is so secluded and secure that the thieves took a big risk entering the property.

“It surprised me, the risk of anything like this happening

is so remote out here. But I’ve started putting a lock on my bike and put my spare key inside,” Chris says.

Chris, who uses the bike as transport to his job and parent’s house in Teapot Valley, says the theft has made him think about taking further security precautions.

“I might start keeping something inside for protection. I don’t want to

hurt anyone but if someone broke in I’d protect myself.”

Chris says he was “blown away and absolutely gobsmacked” to get his bike back and wants to say thanks the person who found it and reported it to police.

Kevin says they both contacted police after the thefts but no one reported hearing or seeing anything suspicious.

Refund for some Air NZ passengers, others denied Some passengers on the cancelled Air New Zealand flight from Auckland to Nelson last month are threatening to go to television show Fair Go after they were denied compensation for accommodation costs – while others were refunded.

Eddie Bradford, of Richmond, was on the flight and says he does not accept Air New Zealand’s reasons for the cancellation and he has written to them seeking a suitable response.

“When you book a flight it is just like a contract, we honoured our side by paying $1100 up front but they didn’t honour their side of the agreement,” says Eddie.

His frustration is further exasperated after hearing that another couple on the flight were refunded their accommodation costs and credited airpoints for the cancellation.

Craig Davies wrote an email complaining about the cancelled flight and the lack of service from Air New Zealand staff. He was refunded for his accommodation costs and credited with airpoints.

But Eddie says he had no such luck. “We sent an email to Air New Zealand complaining about the lack of service and asked them why they had cancelled our flights from Auckland to Nelson.

They sent back what seemed like an automated response, saying passenger safety is paramount and that is why the flight was cancelled.

“Because they have got the monopoly, they think they can just walk over everyone,” says Eddie.

The Sunday afternoon flight was cancelled last month after it was delayed several times. Air New Zealand admitted that the reason the flight was cancelled was because they wanted the plane back in Auckland for the busy Monday morning flights, and poor weather meant they could have flown to Nelson but not back to Auckland that night.

Air New Zealand did not respond in time for our print deadline.

Claire has been told by her doctors she has an aggressive melanoma that is no longer responsive to traditional treatments of chemotherapy and radiation.

This month Claire will be travelling to a specialist clinic in Germany for four weeks of intensive alternative treatments and WOW will be helping her to get there.

Founder of WOW Dame Suzie Moncrieff has announced that all proceeds from the sale will be donated to assist Claire’s fundraising effort.

“Claire has been involved in WOW for so many years, she is a member of the family. When we heard about the struggle she is facing everyone here was determined to help. Shuttersport photographer Chris Symes is a finalist in the Canon Media Awards for an image he shot for Nelson Weekly.

The photo of Stoke/Nayland cricketer Ben Homan taking a diving one-handed catch last November was selected from hundreds of images as a finalist in the Sports Photo of the Year category.

Chris is one of four outstanding local photographers at Shuttersport, who are often seen pounding the sidelines of sporting events all over Nelson.

The agency supply their images to Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly newspapers.

The winners will be announced at a glitzy ceremony in June.

“You didn’t think much about it. They’d come in and take all his possessions and leave and that was it. Another mate gone.”

The loss of mates was the obvious low-light of the war for John, the new patron of the Nelson RSA and dedicated Poppy Day volunteer. “Other than that it was the time of my life. It was just a big adventure to me. We were all young and getting to fly these great machines. It was exciting.”

John, 91, was a pilot with the Royal Air Force and flew in support of bomber aeroplanes over Germany. After the war he moved to Canada and then New Zealand. He has lived in Nelson for 54 years and been a member of the Nelson RSA for 35 years. For most of that time John has been volunteering his time to sell poppies on the corner of Trafalgar and Hardy Sts.

He says Poppy Day is an important day on his calendar and he enjoys raising the money that goes towards health costs for veterans living in Nelson.

“Sometimes people will talk to you, but most of the time it’s just a quick stop to buy the poppy and then on their way.

It’s great to see the support though, on Poppy Day and at the Anzac Day services. Last year we had more than 1000 people there.”

John still works part time at

the Cawthron Institute and his wife Wendy also keeps busy, delivering the Nelson Weekly among other things. John says he’s had a great life but he often things about his mates who weren’t so lucky. “I think about them all the time, and on Anzac Day and Armistice Day it’s a big thing to reminisce.”

Nelson cyclists urged to ‘be bright’ this winter With daylight saving over, cyclists are being urged to make themselves as bright as possible.

Bike Wise, NZ Police, and Nelson City Council are promoting the “Be Bright” campaign which aims to reduce cycling accidents and increasing awareness of cyclist safety.

Cyclists are being reminded to light up their bikes and wear high-visibility clothing to help keep them safe on the road. Keen cyclist and Nelson City councillor Matt Lawrey encourages everyone to think about the safety of the cyclists in their lives, especially in winter.

“The better lit up cyclists are, the better for everyone. I’ve got three lights on the front of my bike, two on the back and three reflectors, and even then I sometimes think I could do with some more.”

CAR CRASH: A dog that ran out onto the road while being walked along Lower Queen St appears to have been a factor in a two-vehicle collision that happened just before 4pm on April 8. “A woman was walking her dog on leash and it went onto the road, and one of the cars swerved to miss it and hit the other one,” said a witness.

A neighbour of the cheeky driver, who did not wish to be named, posted a photo on Facebook of the car park after the woman had left. “She keeps these cones in her car and when she drives off she places the cone,” said the neighbour.

Crowds stream into apple fair

A large crowd celebrated this year’s apple harvest at the annual Wakefield Apple Fair, held last Sunday.

Organisers of the event say they were thrilled to see a steady stream of people through the gates and estimate attendance had quadrupled in size compared with last year.

People were encouraged to bring along their own apples and join in the process of making juice using vintage machinery. There was a variety of apple-themed activities throughout the day including apple bobbing, apple tasting and food stalls selling toffee apples, apple pie and apple jelly.

The tour will conclude with Devonshire Tea set in the grounds of an Appleby garden served by the New Zealand Future Problem Solving team.

A team of Nelson students has won a national problem solving competition and are now preparing to head to the United States to take on other students from around the world.

Last year, Nelson College students participated in the National Future Problem Solving Competition, which saw them compete against 300 teams from schools around New Zealand. They were awarded both junior and middle division champions at the finals held in Auckland, which qualified them for the international competition.

The students departed the national competition before the award ceremony was held, in order to catch a flight and found out on the bus to the airport they had won.

“It was fantastic, something we had wanted to achieve, we had competed the year before and hadn’t quite made it, so we really wanted to do it this time,” says student Logan Smith.

The New Zealand team includes, Kit Vining from Nelson College, Lucy Watts and Emma Halsey from Nelson

Lawrence Clervaux Chaytor (Serial No. 7/180) in military uniform. Chaytor was born in 25 August 1892. On the Auckland War Memorial Museum Cenotaph database his next of kin is listed as John Clervaux Chaytor (father), Spring Creek, Marshlands, Blenheim. Before WWI, Chaytor was a farmer working for his father in Marshlands. Chaytor served with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles during World War One. He embarked on 24 September 1914 from Lyttelton for Wellington. From Wellington Chaytor joined the Main Body and embarked on 16 October 1914 for Egypt. lawrence Clervaux Chaytor.

Hospital chaplain helps to heal the spirit Andrew Board

For two years Yvonne McLean has been the chaplain at Nelson Hospital and in that time she’s spoken with thousands of people dealing with heartbreak, joy or stress. But she says no matter the situation she and her volunteers offer something often missing from a hospital – peace.

The Nelson Chaplaincy Service is a nondenominational organisation, there to offer a friendly ear to hospital patients, staff and visitors. Yvonne and her team of 18 volunteers visit people in wards and also run the hospital chapel, which is right beside the café.

She says some people want to talk, some don’t, while others are just happy to sit in silence while their hand is held.

“We try to gauge what they’d like from us and some people don’t want to see us, but they’re always polite about it. Others want to get something off their chest and we’re there for that too.”

Yvonne was a minister at Nelson Cathedral before she took up the job at the hospital.

She says it was “God’s decision” and she has thoroughly enjoyed it.

“He made it very clear that he wanted me here and it’s been very rewarding, very fulfilling. It has its tough times, but it’s a privilege to be with people during tough times and happy times too.”

She says coming from the Anglican cathedral to the multi-faith Chaplain did take some adjustment, but the main reason for

“I really care about people, regardless. I have up-skilled in other faiths but mainly it’s about people and listening to people, and being there for people no matter what their faith is.”

Last year, Yvonne and her team made 6952 “meaningful” visits to patients and assisted 1019 family members.

She says there is plenty of joy in her job with new parents and grandparents com-

ing to the Chaplain to give thanks and those who may have had surgery and are feeling much better. But there is heartache as well.

“Sometimes it’s tough. Certainly there are times where I have to come back and collect myself, and there are times that I’ve spent time in the chapel just having a few moments of quiet, that’s where I recharge again.

“All our volunteers have to report back to

me at the end of their ward rounds and that’s where they can off-load anything. So I’m here to listen to the volunteers as much as the patients and visitors.”

Due to confidentially rules, Nelson Weekly couldn’t speak with any of the patients that the Chaplaincy has helped, but it did receive an anonymous comment from a patient through the chaplaincy. It read: “Thank you once again for all your support and the support of your team. I would not have been able to get through this admission if it wasn’t for you and your team.

I really praise God for all of you. Thanks again, God bless you all.”

Yvonne says looking after the spirit is just as important as the physical body and she feels the biggest thing they do is bring peace to a situation. “I feel we carry Christ, we may not speak his name, we may not talk about him, but we carry peace into a situation. We may not talk about faith at all, but to bring peace to someone is our main help.” The chaplaincy service is 50 per cent funded by the government, the rest is made up from donations. Yvonne says they get great support from the hospital itself and local churches, but they’re hoping to raise some more money from the community to cover a shortfall this year.

With Nelson Weekly editor Andrew 'Bad News' Board Laying on a wooden trolley in a dark corner of Saxton Stadium with my hat over my face, headphones over my ears and breath running in my nose and out my mouth, I did all I could to calm my nerves.

It was around 7pm last Saturday night. I was dressed in a blue singlet and long blue shorts with black boxing boots and in about an hour and a half I was due to climb into a boxing ring and fight another man in the Fight 4 Victory. But I was trying to forget all that. I was trying to not let the nerves and adrenaline consume me.

As I lay there with loud music pumping into my ears I couldn’t hear anything else, but I could feel the vibrations from the crowd. I could feel the tension and I could only guess as to what was happening in the ring.

After three songs I got up and headed for the dressing room.

My strategy of trying to hide and forget about my fight was not working.

By the time I got to the dressing room, Nelson City councillor Tim Skinner was sitting down with his towel-covered head bowed. He’d lost the first fight of the night and he was disappointed. His eyes winced as he replayed the result in his head.

Standing around him were his wife and his two boys. Despite their dad’s obvious disappointment, his boys had smiles on their faces. They thought he did great and they were right. Tim fought a hell of a fight against Richard Malcolm and lost on split decision, one of seven that would be decided that way over the course of the night.

For the next half an hour I sat in my seat, listened to music, sipped from my water bottle and watched as fellow members of the blue corner left and returned. Crown prosecutor Emma Riddell returned with a black eye but also with her unmistakable smile, “I loved it,” she beamed.

Unassuming chef Kevin Hopgood returned with the blue corner’s first belt of the night, but also with a bloody nose and wry smile as he accepted the congratulations from the rest of us.

I paced the room trying to think about what I should be doing and smashed hand pads held up by our trainer, Deon Charles.

As I walked to the edge of the grandstand I could hear Murray Leaning and Mike King fire up the crowd, I could hear the cheers. When my opponent Hayden Thompson walked to the ring my nerves doubled as I saw the lights spin and the music pump.

Then the attention turned to me. My name roared from the speakers as I walked through the crowd. I could hear people yelling my name but I didn’t dare look. I tried to focus on looking straight ahead and making it to the ring.

When I got there I hopped through the ropes, bounced about and tried to look tough (although I’m certain it didn’t work). The fight was a blur. I remember standing there as the referee gave us his final instructions. Hayden and I were staring at each other and then it was on. I remember throwing a jab and missing and the rest is snapshots. I remember him hitting my ribs, I remember him coming at me and I remember having him on the ropes at one stage. The whole fight seemed to last a few moments and I can’t tell you want happened in each round, this wasn’t because of a head knock, just adrenaline.

During the fight I could only hear my trainer Barry Galbraith, nothing else until the final 30 seconds, then I heard the roar from the crowd and it was incredible.

Standing in the ring and waiting for the judges decision I wasn't sure whether I was going to win or not but I knew I had given it all I could.

Hayden was awarded the fight on a split decision and I quickly found myself back in the dressing room and surprisingly emotional. I didn’t cry or anything, but I felt waves of pride and disappointment. I felt I let myself down by losing, but felt proud that I’d stepped so far out of my comfort zone and had put up a good fight.

My teammates were kind in their praise and after a few moments to collect myself, I headed out to the corporate tables where I had family and friends.

They were all fantastic.

I watched the rest of the fights from the tables and caught up with Hayden in the stands. I congratulated him and we both talked about how we would carry on sparring and training.

It’s something that gets in your bones, I think.

Back in the changing room after the last fight, the girls were doing their makeup and the last fighters were having a shower. I saw a young boxer who regularly attends the Victory Boxing gym and I asked him what he thought. “Yeah, real good.

You were all real good,” he said.

More than a week on, the whole thing still seems a bit surreal, but it would rank as one of the most incredible experiences of my life. To hear the event raised around $80,000 for the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust is quite amazing.

It was a once in a lifetime experience and I have no regrets at all. I’m glad I did, even if my rib is still a bit sore.

Winless Nelson line up unbeaten Waimea Old Boys It doesn't get any easier for Galbraith Group Nelson.

After suffering a close 14-6 loss to bitter rivals Wakatu Hotel Marist on Saturday, they now have to pick themselves up and prepare for the two-time defending champions who are also unbeaten this season.

Waimea Old Boys swept past Freeman Roofing Stoke 35-13 at Greenmeadows on Saturday to extend their perfect start to the season.

But for Nelson there would be no better week to break their losing streak.

"They [Waimea] are the bench mark so it will be a good yardstick for us," says Nelson coach Kade Heke. "We're looking forward to testing ourselves against them."

Nelson have welcomed back star back Robbie Malneek and Kade says they're expecting the arrival of a Fijian number 8 within the next few weeks.

Kade says the key for his side is for his young players to gel as quickly as possible.

After-school sports have been a part of every kiwi kid’s childhood for many years. Thanks to Hockey Nelson, Nelson has its own fantastic junior hockey programme to get kids out and enjoying being active.

It then moves through several levels including Fun Sticks for years one and two, Mini Sticks for years three and four, Kiwi Sticks for years five and six, and Kwick Sticks for intermediate ages. As children go through the levels of the junior hockey programme they move from fun skill games to more competition-based hockey, played between fellow teams.

Leading up to the junior programme, Hockey Nelson co-ordinators visit schools throughout the region, sharing with children three or four lessons, showing them the basics of Hockey and fun games.

The introduction to the sport has proven extremely popular and, at the end of the visits, the schools are invited to take part in a ‘Festival of Hockey’ competition to put their newly learnt skills to the test. This includes schools as far afield as Golden Bay and results in around 800 children gathering at the Saxton hockey turf to play the sport over two days.

The school programme runs from February until the end of May and, along the way, those who wish to continue to play the sport can register to take part in the after-school junior hockey programme.

Regional development manager for hockey, Craig Brett says that the numbers taking part in their afterschool programme have seriously increased; around nine years ago they were operating it with around 40 kids, now numbers have jumped to around 600. The after-school programme runs for 10 weeks, this year beginning on April 30. Because they are still running their school visits when the junior programme starts, registration into the programme has no cut-off date and, thanks to generous sponsorship from Heartland Bank, fees are extremely low.

What makes the junior hockey programme even better for parents is that it is all run on a Thursday evening with no extra trainings to worry

about. The youngest level, Kindie Sticks, begins at 4:30pm and everything is wrapped up by 6:30pm.

Children participating are mainly grouped according to schools and are placed under the guidance of Nelson hockey clubs who are responsible for uniforms and sourcing coaches, of whom 60 are involved with the upcoming junior programme.

Unlike other sports, hockey is played year round thanks to artificial turf.

Once the 10 week summer programme finishes, there is a short break before the winter season starts and, following that, children from the ages of eight and up are invited to take part in an extension programme which works on developing more skills. The players from these can then move into Under 11 representative programmes, or they can continue in a development program if they wish to remain playing at a social level.

Hockey is a great sport for co-ordination, fitness and socialising, so if you are interested in involving your children in the sport, don’t hesitate to register them into the 10 week junior programme today. SportS NETBALL: The Geraldine Hodgson netball tournament will be held at Saxton Stadium on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April. Senior teams and college teams participate in the tournament and, for the first time, Intermediate grade teams have been invited to join in this year.

BOWLS: The Wakefield Bowling Club's latest centre title winners have come a long way in the last three years. Margaret Eames and Rae Peterson didn't win a game when they played in their first Nelson Centre women's pairs tournament three years ago. Last year, they managed just one win but this year they went all the way to win the final on March 15 and Wakefield's first centre title in 14 years.

Hugs and kisses for triathlon finishers Monique Bergman There were plenty of hugs and kisses awaiting competitors as they crossed the finish line of the McFadden McMeekan Phillips Lawyers Nelson Women’s Triathlon on Sunday.

Around 250 women competed in the event which is aimed towards women of all abilities, from beginners to more serious athletes, and includes a 5km run or 3km walk, 14km cycle and four lengths of the Riverside Pool.

In its 28th year, the race is seen as a starter into triathlons by many, which was confirmed by 62 first time competi-

tors completing the course.

There were four women competing in the 70 years age group, who gave some of the younger ones a run for their money.

“We were really pleased with the event, everyone seemed relaxed and people were having fun, it was lovely to see families waiting for their competitor to come in and giving them lots of hugs and kisses as they crossed the finish line,” says event organiser Amanda Dykzeul.

Zoe King won the run section, with Renee Hunt and Kiri Williams not far behind her.

There was an upset in the rugby league results, with the Wanderers Wolves beating the Richmond Rabbits 28 to 16 at Ngawhatu Park last weekend.

Yep, reports of fish getting caught all over the place! Just outside the cut, in the cut (20 lb snapper), Cable bay, Delaware, Cape Soucis, French Pass, Bottle point, and above Durville Island, even out on the local groper grounds and all around. So, as predicated, the fish are in seasonal transit periods as water temperatures change within the Tasman Bay. Here lies the old saying "any bait in the water" will have a chance of catching a reasonable fish, as proven recently by club member Luke Dell who snaffled another 20 lb snap on a no current, low tide situation. Tasman Bays’ fish population is starting to show signs of the massive 3-4 year perfect spawning conditions, with all species showing an increase in juvenile fish being caught at many locations.

On this note, I personally would like to encourage Nelsonion fisho's to consider the option of "catch and release". I definitely am not saying to not take a feed of hardearned fish home to feed yourself, family and important others; however I am promoting the release of some of the bigger main breeding fish and in particular snapper and kingfish. There are already a lot

of very good fisherman practising catch and release principals and only really taking home enough to feed those on the boat for the day.

There is just as much an adrenalin rush from having a hell demon fight with a big snapper or kingie, to then get a couple of quick photos and to watch them swim back down to the murky depths. Try it once, I am sure you will be amazed at the feeling of achievement and satisfaction.

In particular, I would like to mention our king-fishery. We have potentially a world record size kingfish here, however it only takes one average-sized kingfish to feed four families. Although the limit is three per person per day, I would encourage people to only take one or two maximum if they happen to chance onto more than that in a day.

Nelson riders win 'colourful' race Nelson's Jake Stow and Ingrid Richter took out the solo riding honours, but it was the witches, brides and flying fishes that added colour to the Port Nelson Kaiteriteri SixHour Mountainbike Relay Race on Saturday.

Jake completed an leg-burning 15 laps of the 7.5km circuit around the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park in the six-hours, while Ingrid recorded 13 which, incredibly, was more than many of the teams. Craig Tolson and Cameron Jones both recorded 14 laps to finish second and third respectively in the men's solo race, while Bridget McMillan completed 11 laps and super-veter-

"But we were very pleased with how things went and I think all the riders enjoyed it."
