Nelson Airport is gearing up for a $3 million runway upgrade while juggling flights on the country’s fourth busiest airport. Work, by contractor Fulton Hogan, is starting this week and Nelson Airport Ltd chief executive, Kaye McNabb, says there has been a huge amount of work that has already gone into the project. Planning requirements have been excruciatingly detailed to make sure the project runs smoothly and the airport continues to be operational during the hours of scheduled operations. Work is expected to take 15 nights so that scheduled passenger services

Sprig & Fern expands to Capital One of Nelson’s iconic local brews will soon be available in the capital as the Sprig & Fern gets set to open a tavern in central Wellington. Neighbours Day to be celebrated
Nelson neighbourhoods are being encouraged to get behind Neighbours Day by hosting street events and getting to better know their neighbours. Neighbourhood Support Nelson is supporting the national day which aims to encourage Kiwis to go one step further in getting to know their neighbours on a special day each year. Neighbours Day is over the weekend of March 24-25 but Neighbourhood Support would like people to let them know how they are celebrating the day, whether it’s with a street party, or a cup of tea amongst neighbours. All entries will go into a draw to win great prizes, including meat packs, cake packs or a skip hire for a street clean up. ‘I bloody did it’ Back from the dead and now doing the Buller half Three years ago David Currie was a dead man, literally. Today he is revelling in completing the Buller half marathon, a goal he gave himself to keep fit and to continue to get better after a massive stroke killed him, before a miraculous recovery soon after. David’s remarkable story of waking up days after he was taken off life support featured in Nelson Weekly last May and he has been training since then to walk the Buller half marathon. He has been walking from his Stoke home to Nelson and Richmond and had already completed three half marathons, or 21.09 kilometres, before Saturday’s effort. His stroke still makes it difficult for him to walk easily but with a walking stick he is able to get through the kilometres. A support crew including his brother Mark and daughter Nicole went along to help him get over the line in a time of 4 hours 10 minutes, 10 minutes quicker than his previous fastest. He says he is stoked to have finished the

I’m not much of a swimmer, I’d bloody sink, so this is about all I’ve got to stop from getting fat,” he joked. David was also raising money for the Heart Foundation and as of yesterday
had so far raised a total of $1700 from donations. Local businessmen Hamish Fletcher, Mark Currie and Tony Jemmett, from David’s work Opus, also contributed towards shoes, equipment and clothing for David’s walk. To make a donation to David’s fundraiser visit www.heartracer.co.nz/davidcurrie.

Over the past eight years Nelson man Chris Scott has ridden the Coast to Post charity bike ride, he has seen snow, wind, rain, sun and extreme heat. This year he, along with wife Sheila, will witness another event to remember – the event’s 25th anniversary. The Coast to Post ride was founded by NZ Post workers as a “fun” ride, it went from Greymouth to the Christchurch Post Office and almost immediately took on the Pink Panther as its mascot. As the “posties” were already doing the ride someone suggested they raise some money for charity, which began a quarter century relationship with Child Cancer House in Cashel St. The house is used as a home away from home for children and youngsters with cancer. Over the years the cyclists have
raised $222,000 for the charity and this year – the year it’s needed most after the earthquakes damaged the house – are hoping to make it an even $250,000. Chris and Sheila are the only two Nelson riders taking part, joining another 40 cyclists in the three day ride. They say they are looking forward to it, despite the gut-busting climbs. “Some of those hills are twice as bad as the Takaka Hill. A lot end up walking their bikes up, so it’s definitely not the easiest of rides,” says Sheila. This year Chris says he is hoping Nelson people will sponsor him and his wife to help rebuild the Child Cancer House. Ride for Hope draws cash for Richmond Mall charity Close to $10,000 was raised for the Richmond Mall Foundation on the back of another successful Ride for Hope. The annual event, which sees motorcyclists from around the region head out to Hope via Motueka, attracted around 200 motorbikes and their riders despite some murky weather. Richmond Mall manager David Hill says the riders alone raised $2000, which was then matched by the Richmond Mall owners. “It was outstanding. It really was,” he says. “Weather-wise and the number of riders that turned up, we were exceptionally thrilled with it.” There were also plenty of donations from sponsors which raised the funds even higher. David says the funds are “the backbone” of the foundation which gives to individuals as well as local groups, includ-
ing the Rescue Helicopter Trust and the Nelson Hospice. The Ride for Hope is one of a number of fundraisers run by the Richmond Mall. Richmond Mall Foundation is also the charity of choice for the Richmond Rodeo. David spoke to “just about everyone” that went on the ride and says the feedback was all hugely positive as participants enjoyed a barbecue cooked by the Waimea College first XV. “It was a relaxing ride; the whole day is about relaxing and camaraderie.” There were plenty of awesome prizes on offer, estimated to tally $5000, including motorcycle registrations, All Blacks jerseys, radio controlled helicopters, belts, buckles, badges and even Welsh and Australian rugby jerseys.

Top musicans camp in Nelson
The country’s best sounding summer school finished over the weekend with two performances that thrilled audiences. The Adam Summer School is an annual event held at the Nelson School of Music each February, with generous support from Denis and Verna Adam of the Adam Foundation. The tutors are the members of the internationally acclaimed New Zealand String Quartet, all of whom are dedicated teachers as well as performers. Accomplished New Zealand pianist Diedre Irons also filled the role of piano tutor.
This year 25 highly-skilled young musicians from around New Zealand attended the Summer School. The students formed seven chamber ensembles, each group working in depth on a work that they presented in the final public concerts on Saturday. Former Nayland College student Alexa Thomson, was the only Nelsonian involved in the camp. She says it was great to work with other passionate musicans. “You learn a lot in a short space of time. It’s really intense but also really rewarding.”

Stall holders sought for summer fare Food vendors can now register to be part of the annual Sprig & Fern Summer Fare, but if previous years are anything to go by, sites could be snapped up very quickly. More than 3000 people visited the Summer Fare last year and organisers say it is the “last hooray” for Nelson and Tasman residents before winter sets in and daylight saving finishes. The family-friendly event is now iconic in Richmond and attracts plenty of people from Nelson city as well. Richmond Unlimited marketing and events co-ordinator Kim Quint is encouraging food vendors from all over Tasman and Nelson to be part of the biggest street party in the region. The event will be held at Sundial Square on Friday 23 March from 5:30pm to 10pm. You can register your interest at www.richmondunlimited.co.nz. Stall sites cost $80 and are 4 metres by 3 metres deep. Cawthron tour fully booked The Cawthron Institute says it was overwhelmed by the response to their Open Day at the Glenhaven Aquaculture Research Centre on Sunday. More than 500 visitors of all ages and from all parts of the country and abroad showed up. At fifteenminute intervals, Cawthron scientists were kept busy escorting some fifty-plus groups around the site, where they explained the workings of the research work being done in the centre’s various departments. Visitors were also able to witness many real research projects in progress. And the response was very positive, particularly among the young, some of whom declaring that they “were
now hooked on science”. Locals said how proud they were that their city had such a prestigious institution in their midst. And others were so impressed by Cawthron’s work, that they signed up to be Friends of Cawthron. Jo Thompson, Cawthron’s community educator, says her phone has been running red-hot since the Open Day was advertised in Nelson Weekly last week. “It’s brilliant that people are so interested in what Cawthron do to contribute to aquaculture and the region. With so many locals wanting to take a look at the science behind the doors, we will have to consider offering another opportunity in the future for those who have missed out”

Peace tug heads to Richmond Tug of Peace organiser Phil Wright is encouraging Waimea residents to rope in their friends, colleagues and team mates for the annual Nelson Hospice fundraiser. The Tug of Peace will be held in Richmond for the first time in its 13 year history, following many years on Trafalgar St, Nelson. The last Tug of Peace was held during the Rugby World Cup, which was part of the reason to situate within the Tasman region. Sundial Square will be the backdrop with teams of eight competing to see who is Nelson’s strongest. Past winners have included the Tasman Ma-
kos, fire fighters, police and forestry workers, but Phil says the competition is wide open this year. He is encouraging friends, family and sports teams to enter. “We’ve got a trophy. It’s a hand carved trophy which will be on display and the winning team will get their names engraved on it,” he says. The event is free to enter but there will be raffles to help fundraise for the hospice. To enter, fill out a registration form from Farmers, Richmond Mall or download from the event’s website www.nelsonhospice.org.nz. It begins at 12:30pm this Saturday.

The Wairoa Gorge hosted an alien invasion for the tenth year running over the weekend, making Alien Nation the longest running active outdoor dance party in the country. Close to 350 people of the alternative breed landed up the right branch of the valley for the tenth Alien Nation dance party. According to Moxely, a local DJ and crew member the name Alien Nation refers to anyone who has felt alienated from the norms of society, and the festival is a place where those people can come once a year and be part of a community. “If you feel like an alien, we welcome you,” she says. Hello again – February is now upon us and thank goodness we have had a very quiet start to it. Nothing more to report in the “silly things” area and having just come back from another Nana break in Christchurch I am pleased to report all is well there too! The photo this week will be easily recognised as the beautiful flowers of the Eucalyptus ficifolia. I saw this tree while walking down the Railway Reserve this morning and asked Johnno to take a shot as the colour is amazing. It always means “summer is here” to me when these lovely eucalypts start to flower. The bees love these blossoms also as the tree was literally humming as I walked past. We spent a lovely weekend pottering in the garden, bringing in our wood for winter and generally tidying up. The vege garden had a real makeover and replant and there was great excitement as the first of “Beryls” tomatoes was sliced on toast for breakfast. I should tell you a little about Beryl. She was a remarkable lady who became a good friend and I met her while working as a volunteer for the Foundation for the Blind several years ago. She was 93, blind and nearly totally deaf, still living on her own (with good family support), and was still a very keen gardener. She grew a lot of her own veges and had saved seed for many years from dwarf beans – they were very tasty – and from tomatoes that she and her husband were given by the Italian growers in the Wood area of Nelson about 40 years ago. I never could work out just how she knew when to pick things just at their prime. I was not allowed to do much to assist her but one season did help by taking and drying the seeds from a ripe tomato she had picked. This was the start of my tomato crop. They are a large, meaty, low acid Italian variety and are really the tastiest and sweetest tomatoes to eat. Every year I dry seeds on paper towels and produce about 24 seedlings. They are strong growers and produce a good number of

Linda you are quite correct in thinking it is an Echinopsis Pachanoi. Also known as the San Pedro cactus. A: We opened quite a can of worms with this query for more information Linda so here goes…..! This particular cactus often goes missing from peoples gardens in the Nelson area so I have been advised to tell you not to have it on view from the street as you may well lose it. It has strongly hallucinogenic properties and I am told that after much boiling down and straining of the juice the end result is supposed to give quite a feeling of euphoria. However – it is very unpleasant, causes vomiting and other side effects which can be quite dangerous so this use is to be avoided at all cost! One good thing about this cactus is the beautiful flowers. They are short-lived as this helps the plant retain moisture. They are best grown in the ground as they lose energy when in a pot and do not do so well. They are easy to grow and if you cut them across they will branch out. They also are spineless which is a real bonus for a cactus. They will handle frost very well and really are worth growing as the flowers are quite stunning - just keep them around the back of the property!! I do hope this added information is all you need Linda.

She taught me a lot and very rarely let her lack of sight and hearing stop her doing things she loved – we had long and very loud conversations over many cups of tea about all sorts of things from gardens to travel, family and food (she loved to cook). You will doubtless read more about Beryl in other editions.

• Keep picking berry fruit, peaches (we have eaten all our fruit from the dwarf peach –delicious!) plums etc as soon as Eucalyptus ficifolia. they ripen to stop the birds getting them. • Rake up fallen fruit and leaves to deter wasps from hanging around. • Thin out fruit on apples, pears and citrus so that remaining fruits are spaced about 10-15 cms apart. This encourages more even-sized fruit and also helps young trees establish more readily. • Prune out the old canes from raspberries, boysenberries etc when they have finished fruiting and train up strong new canes to take their place. • Roses – continue deadheading and to help with the last flush of flowers, trim all new growth back by about a third. Keep feeding them and ensure they get good water regularly. Also keep a good eye out for pests on new growth. • Keep picking zucchini to encourage them to produce and take out the lower leaves from tomatoes to allow for more even ripening. • Do not put tomatoes in the fridge as they will lose flavour. Pick them when just turning and put them in a bowl inside to ripen at room temperature.
Q: From Judy in Stoke – She wanted to know why her cauliflowers were turning pink. “The seed was “Phenomenal Early” and it was from Watkins. A: I phoned Yates, (who distribute Watkins) and spoke with a delightful lady called Denise who told me the following: "They do not believe it is a seed problem. Good news is it is not a fungal disease or a pest. Genetic purpling can occur when plants are exposed to too much sunlight – they can either turn yellow or pinkish purple around the edges at first." They suggest keeping the head of the cauli covered with the leaves as much as possible and it should help the problem. If the leaves are turning purple as well they suggest you check the level of magnesium in your soil as too little or too much could be adding to the problem. Eat and enjoy your pretty Cauli – hope that helps!

ACOB grab trophy in first year back ACOB made it two from two on the weekend, claiming both first and second division Twenty20 titles at Saxton Oval on Sunday. Athletic College Old Boys in their first year back on the Nelson cricket scene, formerly AOB, stood firm with a solid 126/8 at the end of their 20 overs. Englishman Jake Milton impressed yet again with 28 from the bat while Luke Toynbee also chipped in a real team effort. But that total was enough as they bowled Car Company Stoke/Nayland all out for 105 in the final over. Again it was a team effort with the ball, although having two spin bowlers seemed to play its part. ACOB coach Garry MacDonald says the club is absolutely buzzing following the double over the weekend, stating that they didn’t think they would be “anywhere near that” in their first year. “Well yes, we were obviously pretty happy
about that. We thought it would take two or three years before we won something, so we’re a little bit ahead of schedule.” The side has been built around Jake’s impressive and consistent batting displays. “He’s a marvellous bloke and a very good cricketer. Hell he’s been a godsend.” He was pleased with performance of his batsmen on a difficult wicket. “It was pretty dry. Put it this way, if we had got more than 135 we would have been more than happy.” Despite winning both grades, Garry says the club needs to mould a few younger faces, before being completely happy with the depth in the club. Old campaigners Gary Walton and Paul Brydon played a considerable part in the season. ACOB will now continue their one-day campaign which got off to the perfect start on Saturday, smashing Hot Mama’s Motueka.

Nelson’s top midget drivers Nick Marquet and Nevil Basalaj couldn’t break Dave Kerr’s winning streak as the Christchurch driver edged to his fifth consecutive South Island Midget Championship at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway on Saturday night. With two wins from three races Dave tallied up 28 points to edge out Nick who was two points behind with Nevil third, despite not finishing the third heat. Nick was left to rue points he failed to pick up in earlier races. In the first heat he was in second place with just one lap remaining, before being passed by Dunedin driver Gavin Wilkie in the final stages, which would have made things even more interesting heading into the final race. Nevil claimed race two with Nick again featuring in the second positive, one spot ahead of Dave. Despite being stuck at the back of the grid, Nick forced his way to the front during the final race only to be surpassed by the night’s eventual winner, keeping the title back in Christchurch.

International riders set for local ride The third annual NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial is set to take place in 88 Valley, near Wakefield, this Sunday. The event attracts riders from all over New Zealand and Japan and tests riders’ skill, negotiating obstacles including rocks, sheer walls and tyres. The popular Goldpine Team Xtreme riders from NonStop Adventure will also be on hand to entertain spectators and play hosts to the event. The rider-friendly event is all about fun and participation, a recipe that has been working very successfully for over 34 years in Japan, the home of the Ihatove event, says organiser Stephen Oli-
ver. “The founder of the Japanese Ihatove event, Yasuo Manzawa is keen to see this type of event grow in New Zealand as it has become very popular in Japan. This event caters for all levels of rider which helps to give the weekend a fun atmosphere which is very well received.” Top World Podium rider, and multi Japanese Champion, Takumi Narita, visited NonStop Adventure as a guest of in the inaugural 2010 NZ Ihatove event held at Wakefield, with Trials legend Mick Andrew in 2011. This year Hiro Kimura, best friend of Mick and long-time development rider for Yamaha, is expected to line up and show his skills. He will join Japanese rider Ishi Yama at the event. Thursday will be a busy day for the Japanese guests as they no sooner arrive at Nelson airport before they are whisked away to be welcomed by NonStop’s strategic partners, the Tasman District Council’s mayor Richard Kempthorne and then Robert and Jane Eggers and their team at Goldpine. BMX riders star in NI

The Nelson BMX club has a “promising” future as a team of five returned from the Wellington BMX Championships in Levin with a first overall and a number of podium finishes amongst them. The Nelson representatives raced in age grades from seven to 30 plus. Racing in the 11 year old boys grade, local lad Logan Clarke exceeded his national NZ4 ranking to win all four heats and the final to take out first overall. The feat was all the more impressive as Logan was racing against the number one ranked rider for their age group as well as competitors from all over New Zealand.
Out of the 180 competitors racing, Nelson’s team was strongly represented in the winner’s circle with Bradey Taylor-Jones getting second overall in the 16 years age grade while Tasman Wakelin also got on the podium with a third overall. Hamish Clarke, the club president, says they did fantastically well. “From the fact we’re a small club and have to travel to get experience at events like this, we punch well above our weight.” Hamish and all the other members encourage anyone who is interested in BMX to come down to the training at Tahunanui BMX track on Thursday evenings from 5.30pm.
