Teddy bear’s picnic Anyone who ventured out to the woods over the weekend was sure of a big surprise. Worn, torn, big, small, old and new, whether they were modern or classic, teddies of all kinds could be found at the teddy bear’s picnic held at Isel Park. The event attracted 1500 people
this year says Nelson City Council festivals director Sophie Kelly who labelled the event as one of those few events that cater to young families. “It’s wonderful for them to come together, participate interactively and be a part of the fun.”

Boaties ‘should be’ licenced
Boaties should have to get a licence before taking to the water says the region’s harbour master, or he warns we’re likely to see a death on our waters. Dave Duncan says “stupid decisions” are putting people’s lives at risk in Nelson and he’d be in favour of a licencing system requiring skippers to undergo a simple course and test before they’re allowed
to take to the water. “My 18 year old son could go and buy himself a 60 foot launch without any official or formal training and take it to Wellington and we see that happening and some people are just getting back by the grace of God and luck.” So far this summer Dave says he and his staff have been called several times to rescue stranded boaties and while there’s been

we haven’t had a fatality this year, we’ve had people rescued in stupid situations and saved only by their lifejackets or good fortune of other boaties being around.” He says in one incident a man and his ten year old boy were rescued from a navigation beacon after their boat capsized. They

had been clinging to it for hours and Dave says it was only their lifejackets and grabbing a hold of the beacon that stopped them from being swept to sea. He believes a “simple course” aimed at personal safety and boat handling would be a good idea but doubts it will take off due to the cost of setting it up and the considerable resources that would be needed to get it started. He says there are boat safety courses available in Nelson and urges locals to seek one out. “The water is a pioneer still, it’s a place people can go for adventure but we just want them to be safe in their adventures.” Fisherman Dave Younghusband of Stoke, who was at the marina on Saturday, says he supports the idea of boaties taking a course or obtaining a licence. “There are a lot of idiots out there and if you break down on the road you’re on land and it’s okay but if you

Photo: Phillip Rollo. break down out there you don’t have a lot of help if you don’t know what you’re doing.” Shaun Kingston, another fisherman at the marina on Saturday, hinted that a licence would be a good idea, but the logistics and cost might rule that out. “I’ve actually been looking into doing a course just in case something goes wrong. It’s funny you can go buy a boat that can go 100 mp/h and kids can almost drive it,” he says.
“But people scrape up enough money to buy a boat and then you’ve got to pay to run it and spending more money to go through a course would probably put people off.” Dave Duncan says another major issue is the number of people using the boat ramp and he believes the council needs to build another. “You can have 100 trailers and cars parked up along Akersten St and they’ve all got to get in and out of the same small waterway and then you have kayakers and sailors as well. We definitely need another boat ramp.” Shaun agreed that there needs to be another boat ramp to prevent congestion on busy days. “You’ve either got to be here at 4:30am or wait until 10am and then there’s not so many people. My mate turned up at 6am and he had to wait an hour before he hit the water.” Nelson City Council says it is looking at options to improve accessibility and reduce waiting times for vessels using it.

The closure of two earthquake prone venues in Nelson has left event organisers scrambling to secure alternative locations at late notice. The city’s main events venue, the Trafalgar Centre, was closed by Nelson City Council in early December due to a high chance of loss of life should a moderate earthquake occur while it was in use. The Nelson School of Music has since suffered a similar fate, closing to public use until earthquake-strengthening work has been completed. With both venues out of action, full calendars of pre booked events are now out in the cold and that’s putting pressure on other locations. Stu Dalton, Theatre Royal marketing and box office manager, says they’ve already come to the rescue of two events but that he doubted many more would be so lucky. “Because we have such a high community usage, we are quite full and we only have a few dates available. Luckily for the promoters who were booked at those two venues we had it available, but only by chance

the council, says she was hopeful Nelson would still host the game. “It’s certainly our strong desire to retain the game in Nelson if at all possible. We are very keen and eager to work collaboratively with the council in terms of making that happen and Saxton is certainly an option we are exploring.” Paul Hampden, one of the organisers of the Fight 4 Victory boxing event says they are still looking at alternative venues for it, along with the Joseph Parker fight that was originally scheduled for late March. “We had a date for end of March but the closure makes it difficult to stick to that date. But we still feel positive that it will go ahead.” Other events scheduled at the Trafalgar Centre this year were Nelson Globetrotters, Stage Challenge, Nelson Bridal Expo and the Cat Show.

As we go through the year, I doubt we’ll have availability.” Sports Tasman facility manager Brent Maru says they are working “flat out” with the NCC to see how they can accommodate events that were booked at the Trafalgar Centre. “We’re all of a sudden faced with a whole lot of bookings that are foreign to us. We’re working really hard on how this can work.” Two of those events currently in talks with the council over moving their events to the stadium are the Canterbury Tactix netball team and the Fight 4 Victory charity boxing event. The Tactix were booked in at the Trafalgar Centre for its Round 11 ANZ Championship clash against the Central Pulse. Wine and food fest back to its roots
WinErY ToUr: The second night of the Classic Hits Winery Tour at Neudorf Vineyards has sold out but Nelson Weekly has a double pass to give away for the Thursday night show. The event is returning to Upper Moutere on February 27 and 28 and is headlined by The Exponents and Stan Walker. To win the double pass for the Thursday show, email “win tickets” and your details to editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz. JAzz pErformAncES: Following on from the success of the Nelson Jazz Festival, the Nelson Jazz Club is performing a lunch time summer series of local jazz every Sunday from noon to 2.30 through January and February on the Village Green at Founders Heritage Park (and inside the Energy Centre if wet). Tickets to the Sunday Jazz are only $2 per person, at the door. The Jazz bands will play in wet or fine weather. SpEnDing STrong AgAin: Nelson enjoyed a 5.9 per cent growth in spending for the month of December, compared with the year before according to the latest figures released by eftpos provider Paymark. The figures showed the amount of money spent through the network in the month was $102.9 million.
The Brightwater Wine and Food Festival is returning after an “overwhelming” response from the public encouraged the Rotary Club of Richmond to revive their iconic fundraising event. Rotary had organised the festival nine times raising around $230,000 for charities, schools and volunteer organisations around the district. The club canned the festival last year so it could reassess its future after a making a loss in 2012 but now it’s back with the 10th edition to be held at the same venue at Middle-Earth Vineyard on Bryant Rd in Brightwater on Sunday February 16. “The public response has been overwhelming,” member of the festival organising committee Kevin Gear says. “Everyone has been asking ‘why it wasn’t held last year’ and ‘when will it be on again’ so that encouraged us to go ahead. “It’s also been a wonderful fundraiser for the community. Rotary has raised around $230,000 from the festival and spread it around the community so we wanted to do that as well.” Money raised from this year’s festival will go to Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, Wanderers Sports Club, Brightwater Rural Fire Force and the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade. However, Kevin and organising committee chairman Pete Glue say they needed to change the focus of the festival to make it a success. Pete says the crowds stayed away in 2012 because people were reluctant to pay $50 for a ticket so the emphasis this year is providing quality local wine,

He says Rotary is also in debt to the landowner Rob Grey and Middle-Earth’s managers Ryan and Kylie O’Connell for allowing the festival to be held at the vineyard. The festival’s sponsors are Fertilizer NZ

Tourists in town a ‘big sigh of relief ’ Your Community Newspaper
The sun is shining, the weather is sweet, and now is the perfect time to come to stay in Nelson. That is the cry of Motel Association branch administration officer John Gilbertson who is “hoping like hell” bookings will pick up again after an extremely busy period between Christmas and the start of the New Year. Ever since the Christchurch earthquake and a global recession, the visitor numbers from Canterbury – Nelson’s biggest visitor market – have dropped considerably. This year could be the turning point though, with more coming back, and Nelson Tasman Tourism CEO Lynda Keene says there was an “air of optimism” with an influx of international visitors to the region as well, including the big spending Brits. “The past three summers have been really tough but that tide is turning a wee bit now regarding our UK visitors who are coming back, the US, Japanese, Indian and from China as well,” she says. “There’s a big sigh of relief. We needed this to be a really good summer and it’s certainly performing.” Lynda says there has been a big turn around across all of the tourism sectors and says the motel industry had a strong domestic presence for the past two weeks. But John believes some guests haven’t stayed long enough and commented that there are 190 rooms within the association that are still waiting to be snapped up this week. “The motels up until the fourth and fifth of January, which was

the statutory holiday period, most of them were extremely busy. However, as is the normal case, that drops off and this year we’ve seen quite a quick drop off in people staying,” he says. “Usually we get a second wave of people about now but it’ll be interesting to see whether that happens.” John blamed incorrect weather forecasts for scaring off some potential visitors too, saying some may have decided against travelling when hearing it could have been wet in the leadup to the New Year. The biggest event over summer has been the Black Caps versus West Indies One Day International cricket match at Saxton Oval. But Lynda estimates that just five percent of the 5300 people who attended the match had travelled to the region specifically for the it, and it’s the spinoffs of a huge television audience and the upcoming 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup could have that has her more excited. With the forecast now suggesting finer weather during our best summer months, John was hoping that it would spark an increase in visitors cashing in their annual leave at the start of the year. “One would hope they’d choose to spend it in the Nelson region when they take it. There’s huge numbers of rooms available and we’d be hoping that people think about and ring and book.”

New visitor record for airport Your Community Newspaper
People flying to and from Nelson have set a new record during December, with more than 70,000 taking off or landing at the region’s airport. Nelson Airport Ltd announced that December 2013 was a record month, for 71,523 passengers, up more than 4000 on the same month the year before. The airport’s chief executive Kaye McNabb says annual passenger numbers now eclipse those of Rotorua, Blenheim and Hamilton combined. “Passenger numbers are a good barometer of the performance of the local economy so it’s pleasing to be able to report such great results,” she says. “With the growing confidence in New Zealand’s economic performance the airport company is expecting the growth to continue and more records to be broken over the coming year. Kaye says the airport was “bursting at the seams” during the month

and commended the work of the airlines and Nelson Tasman Tourism in helping bring people to the region. The re-introduction of an Air New Zealand service to Palmerston North has also helped boost visitor numbers by more than 1000 during the month. “The airport terminal has been bursting at the seams with happy holiday makers over the Christmas period and the whole airport team have been kept very busy making sure the Nelson experience is the best our visitors can have.”

Police handing out chocolates to drivers Drivers are being handed free chocolate from police in an effort to raise awareness about driving safely. Police across Tasman District, which includes Marlborough, Nelson Bays and the West Coast, launched a road policing operation targeting travellers on the State Highways last week. Operation Alert is part of the national Safer Summers campaign and aims to
ensure drivers are taking adequate breaks during long journeys and are not driving while fatigued. Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews says police would be conducting high visibility patrols and checkpoints on a range of State Highways from Kaikoura to Haast. As an incentive to take a break officers will be handing out chocolate bars to drivers. All drivers stopped can also expect to
be breath tested and have their licence checked. The 4kmh speed tolerance is also being enforced. Grant says holiday makers travelling in and out of the district were often covering long distances and it was vitally important they took adequate breaks in the journey to avoid fatigue. “When you combine a tired driver with
speed and any other distractions you immediately have a lethal mix. “We want people to get to and from their holiday safely and we’re hoping that by being highly visible on the roads people will think about their driving. Safe drivers are alert, not impaired by drugs or alcohol and have the appropriate licence.” Operation Alert runs until Sunday 26 January.
Museum reopens a year after failing quake test The museum’s research facility will reopen to the public today, almost a year to the week that it was forced to close due to earthquake risk. The Nelson Provincial Museum’s building in Isel Park, Stoke failed earthquake testing last year due to two mezzanine floors at either end of the building, which were used to store parts of its collection. One of the mezzanines has been strengthened with steel braces and the other has been cleared of the filing cabinets that were held there. Other work in the building has seen braces added as well as an upgrade of the fire alarm system and electrics. Museum chief executive Peter
Millward says in a funny way the floods that threatened parts of the collection and earthquake risk has meant the collection is now safer than it has ever been. “I can say, hand on heart, that the collection has never been as well protected as it is right now and I guess that’s the up side of this whole situation.” The building will reopen today after it was granted a certificate of public use before Christmas. The work was completed for less than $150,000 and the building now has an earthquake rating of 40 per cent. It included “countless staff hours” as well. The hours of the research facility is from 12.30-4.30pm from Tuesday to Friday.

Classic cars on display for hospice Classic car owners will have an opportunity to show off their pride and joy while helping raise funds for a great cause when the Classic Motoring Society of Nelson holds its annual fundraising show this Sunday. The society is inviting classic car owners from around the Nelson-Tasman region to bring their cars to the Charity Classic Car Show Day at the A and P Showgrounds on Lower Queen Street in Richmond. The show will be open to the public and all proceeds will go to the Nelson Tasman Hospice. "We usually get around 300 to 400 cars and raise
$4000 to $5000," society president Geoff Morris says. "It's such a good cause - the hospice helps so many people around the district." Geoff says the annual fundraising show has been running for 17 years although it wasn't held last year when there was a show in Blenheim. The cost is $5 per car with public entry to the show by gold coin donation. Geoff says food carts will be on site for the show but he also encouraged car owners to bring a barbecue or picnic and "make a day of it". The venue will be open to car owners from 9.30am with public viewing from 11am to 3pm.

A Stoke marine engineer Sam Guo has found a novel way to combine two of his favourite hobbies, fishing and biking. Sam and his workmate at Reliance Engineering in Port Nelson, Jason King, have designed and built two pedal-powered fishing boats and they are proving to be incredibly successful. Not only are the boats super-stable and cheap to run, they are quiet and that means they are perfect for catching wary snapper. "We go all over the place with them," Jason says. "We mostly fish here off Tahuna but we've also been to French Pass, Kaiteriteri and even the West Coast. "When we were fishing on the West Coast it was so rough people were out surfing but we were fine which shows how stable the boats are. On a bad day we might get a wet backside but that's all. "We're catching heaps. I don't know what it is but they are quiet which doesn't scare the fish. "I've got a five metre fizz
boat but I leave it behind and use this now. It's cheaper to run and I'm catching more fish on it." Sam says the twin-hulled boats are made of aluminium and take about 100 hours to build. They only weigh 40 kilograms and include a seat, two rod holders, a fish finder and a mount for a small outboard motor which they sometimes use for longer fishing trips. Sam says the pedals and chain drive are from old recycled bike parts and are connected to the propeller through a drive shaft from an old outboard motor. "You have to get the ratio right,' Sam says. It takes one revolution of the pedals to spin the prop seven times - it can cruise at 7.5 kilometres an hour." Jason says the two boats are the mark three and four versions and they are thinking about marketing the design. "We might put one on TradeMe and see what happens. There could be a market for them, who knows?"

Police report with Area Commander
Steve Greally
This week I’d like to throw a bouquet to the people of the Nelson region and the visitors who have been here over the holiday season. For the police, this has been a fantastic holiday season. I know if you’ve been camping you may have a slightly different perspective given the inclement weather we’ve had. However, the people out socialising and celebrating have, on the whole, been extremely well behaved and we have had very few serious issues to deal with. What my staff are seeing is a more responsible approach to alcohol consumption and the end result of that is less disorder, fewer victims and safer roads. We’ve worked closely with those in the hospitality business and in my view the way licensees are running their businesses is also having a very positive impact for the wider community. Police officers are now issuing instant infringement notices for breaches of the liquor ban and young people should take note that we will also issue an infringement notice to anyone caught using fake ID. That will cost $250 - an expensive night out! Out on the roads, we’ve had no serious road crashes over the holiday period and a fairly small number of people who were found to be driving with excess breath alcohol. With the likely reduction in the acceptable alcohol level for driver coming up we will be doing some more work in the months ahead to educate drivers. Thanks everyone for contributing to the start of a safe and happy New Year in Nelson Bays.

CHEF’S SPECIAL: What beats being waited on hand and foot by one of Nelson’s best chefs? When your meal is on the house of course. Locals Eileen Allen, Mike Jukes, Toni Crichton and Sharon Jukes were treated to a five course meal by Relish Waterfront Dining chef Stu Cliffin on Saturday night. Mike won a competition, organised by Brightwater Vineyards to dine in style with Stu as his personal chef and got to share the win with his best friends. With a tailored menu and Brightwater Vineyards wine for the evening matched to each course, Mike says the night was “absolutely fabulous”. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

The distance from Nelson to Lake Rotoiti is 88.4km and according to Google Maps it takes drivers about 117 minutes to make the journey. But in 1913 when Mr and Mrs C H Coote drove their Model T Ford to the lake it took the entire day, which highlights how difficult the very first car ride was. Many tyres were changed and some hills were negotiated in reverse too. Photos of the historic trip have been kept and show a horse pulling the Ford through the Motupiko River, and this weekend’s annual St Arnaud Festival the local history group will be commemorating 100 years of motoring to the lake. “One of our members is a direct descendant of the people who drove the first car,” says history group member Chris Richards. “It just seems an appropriate time to recognise what was a very difficult journey.” Chris says it was relatively easy to find information on the first car rides and some photographs have been sourced. “There are some classic stories. One lady arrived with her children at the Motupiko River to find it in flood and she couldn’t cross it so she backtracked and went by Kohatu and that ford was flooded as well. But there was a footbridge so they measured her car and they measured the footbridge and she had an inch to spare so she drove across it. This has actually been written up and she died only last year so a lot of this really early history is not only photographed, written about but a lot of it is still in living memory.” The history group has invited owners of vintage cars from Nelson, Murchison and Blenheim to gather at Lake Rotoiti this Sunday to celebrate 100 years of motoring at St Arnaud. Tony Hansen and his wife Marie will be

Left: Mr and Mrs C H Coote on the first ever car ride to St Arnaud in 1913. making the trip in their 1939 Chevrolet Businessman’s Coupe, and although they live in Richmond, the Hansens say St Arnaud is the closest they have to a second home, making the trip three times a week as the contractors for New Zealand Post’s rural delivery. “We do the full circuit. It’s just over 300km. It’s certainly not as eventful as it was in the early days, the roads are tar sealed and the people we have to deal with are just wonderful, wonderful people,” says Tony. Tony and Marie take more than just the mail and parcels to St Arnaud, they take “anything” the residents phone them about, be it groceries, farm supplies, medication, machinery parts and shop supplies. “The other day a water cylinder burst so we took a new one up. If they’re not home we put the butter and milk in the fridge.” Even though they’re on the road three times a week Tony says he will never get
sick of driving up there, and was looking forward to this weekend. He found some irony in the fact the Coote’s first trip took all day and by the time his deliveries are all done his takes all day as well. “A lot of the country was still undeveloped. The photo Chris has of the bullocks towing them through the river, well we wouldn’t dream of doing that, we’d fill the week in. We’ve had some pretty horrific times with the snow but I’ve only ever missed half a run twice because we couldn’t get any further.” The history group will have a tent at the festival with a display of photos, maps, and other details of those early days, and they’re hoping visitors will bring any memorabilia that might relate to the topic. Morning tea will be provided at the history tent for all intrepid vintage car drivers and passengers. For more information, phone Chris Richards on 03 521 1224.

This is not just coffee shops etc but quite a few retailers in general. Surely the owners must realise that business should (and can) be better—and take steps to train staff? Maybe even use the services of professional “mystery shoppers” to show where service could be improved—and therefore profits! Its not that hard. David, Richmond.
Better service needed: In reference to the txt ‘letter’, printed on Jan 8, headed “Customer Service could be better”, I would have to agree wholeheartedly with the writer's comments. Too often one walks into some Nelson area shops, and is ignored by staff.

Zeald is a full service website company, committed to helping people create a website that doesn’t just look great, but also delivers a significant result for their business! Where most people ‘set and forget’, Zeald believes every website needs regular attention to keep it producing the best results. Because the online world moves at a fast pace, the look of a website becomes out-of-date within a year or two. It is likely that your initial design will require freshening up, to ensure that is current and enhances your business. A successful website is determined by how well it performs behind the scenes. At Zeald, you’ll be able to form a strategy for your business, and have your website reflect these goals. Now is a good time to consider how your website is performing, and how you can make your website your best marketing platform for 2014. Give Marc, your local eBusiness Consultant a call to talk about New Year changes. A previous small business owner himself, he understands the needs of small businesses. Rest assured, you will be safe in the hands of an experienced eBusiness Consultant, and Nelson native. People often ask what’s happening in the Nelson residential Real Estate market. At the moment it’s steady to strong sales through the spring months with new arrivals to Nelson leading the way, plus first home buyers are still finding ways to finance purchases. We still have many Cantabrians moving to Nelson, with some red zoners still being paid out and saying they are fed up with traffic problems etc. so moving up here to sunny Nelson! There are also a few investors about but they tend to be only searching for bargains. So all in all plenty of action in the market, but with a very informed buyer with access to recent sales statistics we are not seeing rampant price inflation but definitely upward pressure on prices and good sales. For sure a “sellers” market that looks likely to continue for some time. Simon has consistently been a top selling local Nelson agent for several years and has built a great reputation and referral network. Simon can offer you a fair and reasonable commission rate so you can maximize your profit, combined with a professional marketing package utilizing a soughtafter professional photographer, all major websites, and the Property Press. Marlborough Trials Centre owner Brendon Wadsworth is excited to welcome his longtime friend and fellow motorcycle repair specialist Zane Boyce to his business. Brendon and Zane go way back - and so does Zane’s hands on motorcycle repair experience. He previously owned a repair and servicing business on the Gold Coast of Australia and has reunited with Brendon in the top of the south to provide service and repairs of all makes and models of road bikes. Whether you ride a Japanese or a European motorcycle, call in to see Zane at the workshop and leave your bike in safe hands. He’s had industry experience working for Harley Davidson before setting out on his own and is looking forward to applying his wide skill base to local bikes. “Due to the high number of riders in our region, I was really surprised there wasn’t a lot of road bike repairs and servicing on offer. We are filling a gap in the market that’s for sure. We specialise in all makes of road bikes and have the full range of service tools for any make or model.”

• When Peter and I go back to Blenheim, the first priority is a walk around the garden. Sometimes it is a hasty walk. This time, I was best pleased with what I saw. My mulching programme is working well. The areas that have been mulched are coping well with my absence, while other parts of the garden are feeling the effects of the high Marlborough temperatures. This is particularly so with the new garden that I am making. Some areas have been mulched, others not, and it is quite evident which plants are happy, against those that are not. So every time we go home, a little more attention is made towards the unhappy lot. • The garden area that is receiving treatment is given a thorough soaking for two hours, and may I say it really enjoys that. This makes weeding a lot easier too. No, I don’t get bogged down in wet soil, because I only do a small patch at a time. [Maturity has taught me to pace myself!] • If the weeds are young and not the offensive kind, like couch or clover, and if they are not setting seed, they are left to decompose under the new mulch. Next comes wads of very wet newspaper, which has been soaking in an old copper for two hours, kept for just that purpose. And here is where the Nelson Weekly comes in handy again. I don’t spread the pages out in order to cover the soil more quickly. Oh no! All 30 odd pages are dropped in one place with heaps more paper overlapping the edges. Hopefully there is no air space for cheeky weeds to attempt to grow!

• Next comes the compost, spread to completely cover the newspaper. But, spaces must be provided around the base of all the plants to enable them to “breathe”. They don’t like getting claustrophobia! • Now it is time to mow the lawn, and all of the lawn clippings should be spread to cover the compost. Last of all, you walk away and have a look in a week’s time. You will be pleased with your efforts. • All this seems a lot of work, but it isn’t, because the trick is to do a small area at a time, Which leaves heaps of time for golf, cafe-ing picnics, swimming, shopping, reading, or sitting in the garden in the evenings with a glass of wine at hand, and surveying a splendid result. • I was asked recently what would be a suitable shrub to replace a rose that was unhappy in too much shade. A brunsfelsia named White Caps would be a good idea. It is quite happy in a shady spot and is flowering now with fragrant trumpet shaped flowers. On the other hand if the situation is protected from frost, what could be nicer than a kalmia with unusual pink icing sugar shaped star flowers? • I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas. Most folk seemed to KISS it [Keep it Simple Sweetheart] this year. One gentleman I know planned to climb to the Centre of New Zealand and spend some time there. Sounds lovely to me. I hope the New Year will be good to you, Jill.

Young rodeo rider Harrison Buckland of Upper Moutere will be competing in the steer riding at the Richmond Rodeo this Saturday. Photo: Simon Bloomberg. Eight seconds is not long but this Saturday at the Richmond A and P Showgrounds it will seem like an eternity for Upper Moutere parents Simon and Bobbye Buckland. That’s because they will be watching their 12-year-son Harrison jump on an angry steer and then try to hang on for dear life to complete the magic eight second ride at the Richmond Rodeo. Although Harrison has been riding steers at rodeos for four years, Bobbye admits she gets nervous everytime her son dons his cowboy hat, chaps and safety vest and strides up to the mounting pen. “I do get horribly nervous, I can’t help it,” Bobbye says. “But he loves doing it so we can’t stop him.” However, Bobbye and Simon shouldn’t be surprised that Harrison is a keen rodeo rider after being raised in the heart of cowboy country in
Parkes Livestock
Texas. It is also in Harrison’s genes with his grandfather riding bulls around the Texas rodeo circuit and his great grandfather being a rodeo clown. Bobbye, who is from the Lone Star state, was also a pretty handy calf roper although didn’t compete in rodeos. Harrison has been riding in rodeos since he was three starting with sheep and calf riding in Texas before moving to New Zealand with his family in 2006 and graduating to steers. “I just do it for fun,” Harrison says. “It’s really cool and exciting. My aim is to last the eight seconds - I’ve stayed on for six so far. And then I want to step up to second division bulls.” Harrison will be in good company on Saturday with some of the country’s top cowboys and cowgirls entered in the Richmond Rodeo. Richmond

A&P Showgrounds Richmond Rodeo Association secretary Tina Angus-Phyn says the national champion team roping combination of Patrick McCarthy and his sister Kate Haugh of Canterbury, national champion saddle bronc rider Paul Robinson of Southland and national champion steer wrestler Chris Hood of Canterbury head a star-studded line-up. There will be 11 cowboys in this year’s open bull riding which Tina says is always a highlight. The
second division bull riders will also be in action and have the extra incentive of riding for prize money in the Parkes Livestock Top Six Shootout. Aspiring young cowboys and girls will have a chance to ride their own bucking broncos in the sheep riding competition. The rodeo starts at 11.30am and admission costs $15 for adults, $5 for under-16s with under-fives free.

Hometown hit out for new Crusader Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Mitchell Drummond is still coming to grips with the fact he’s now a Crusader. The All Blacks haven’t arrived back for training just yet but there are still plenty of big names alongside him. In a few weeks time Richie McCaw will be his captain, IRB Player of the Year Kieran Read will be his team mate and so will another nearly 20 past or present All Blacks. The 19 year old, who attended Nayland College in Stoke before shifting to Nelson College where he led the first XV in the Press Cup, will be the youngest player in the Crusaders Super Rugby squad. While he admits he still has to “pinch himself ” when asked how it feels to be a Crusader, Mitchell is hoping a pre-season match against the Highlanders in Motueka will give him an early chance to prove he’s up to the standard – and what better way than in front of friends and family in the town his dad grew up in. “That will be pretty special. Obviously my old man was born and raised in Mot so going back there for my first game will be a pretty special day,” he says. Mitchell compared the first day of being a Crusader to Christmas Day, highlighting the amount of free Adidas and Crusaders kit that is distributed to each player. “Day one
Nelson's Mitchell Drummond will be a part of the Crusaders squad when it plays a pre season game in Motueka next month. Photo: Phillip Rollo. you get a couple of bags and a whole heap of footwear which was cool. You open your bag and it’s crazy the amount of stuff in there. This is the stuff I used to buy from the shops but now you’re part of a group that’s doing it. I still have to pinch myself and some days I still can’t believe I’m here doing this.” The first three weeks of preseason training was heavily focused on fitness. “Having to do it every day was the hardest thing. You’d get up five days a week and be out pounding the roads. It was tough but pretty enjoyable. Obviously the All Blacks weren’t there, they’re all overseas but it was a pretty cool environment to be part of.”
With Andy Ellis and Willie Heinz both firmly established as halfbacks in the Crusaders, Mitchell is likely to be seen as a long term prospect, but he’s happy to bide his time in his debut season. “I’m just soaking it all up and learning as much as I can and if I get an opportunity to get out there and have a crack well hopefully I can put a bit of pressure on them.” The Crusaders take on the Highlanders in Motueka at Sportspark Motueka on Friday, February 7. Tickets are selling for as little as $15 and are available from Nelson School of Music, Theatre Royal, Nelson i-Site, New World Nelson, Richmond Mall, Hampden Hotel Murchison or online at makos.co.nz.

Ussher ready to defend record Challenge Wanaka may not be the longest race that champion Nelson multisport athlete Richard Ussher will contest this year but he knows it will certainly one of the toughest. Richard is lining up in this Saturday's 3.8 kilometre swim, 180km cycle and 42.2km run around Wanaka for the second time after winning the race in 2010 in a record time of eight hours 34 minutes 41 seconds. That's only a fraction of the time it takes Richard to win most of his expedition races but he says that doesn't mean there won't be any pain and suffering. "Physically, the ironman races are the toughest because they are so intense and one dimensional. You are sitting on the red line all day which is different from the Coast to Coast where you get a long kayak to break it up or an expedition race which is more of a mental game." Although Richard is happy with his lengthy build up to Saturday's race he is still expecting to battle in the last 10 to 15 kilometres of the run. After a 3.8km swim in Lake Wa-

naka and 180km cycle that takes in Glendhu Bay and Lake Hawea, he says the final stage of the 42.2km marathon is always a big challenge. "I haven't done an ironman for a long time but I've had a very good build up to this one. My training has been very specific and it hasn't got me down - it's been very balanced. "But Wanaka is a tough course by ironman standards because there's no place to coast. The hills are not big but there's lots of them and if it's hot and windy then the last 10 or 15 kilometres of the run can be so hard." Richard will be facing a high quality field that includes last year’s champion, Dylan McNeice and Challenge Penticton winner Jeffrey Symonds of Canada. Hamilton's Keegan Williams, Wanaka’s Dougal Allen and Matt Burgess of Auckland as well as overseas professionals Courtney Ogden and Tim Beardall, both of Australia, Jaroslav Kovacic of
Slovenia and Englishman Paul Hawkins, who finished third at Ironman UK in 2012, have also entered. Richmond's Robin Reid is also lining up in his first ironman distance race and Richard expects the former Olympic cyclist to blitz the 180km cycle section. "Robin will rip the bike apart and his swimming has been going quite well too. The run will be the big challenge for him - that's where the pros can make up 20 or 30 minutes on the rest of the guys." Wanaka's Gina Crawford is returning to defend her women's title against Candice Hammond (Cambridge), Tamsyn Hayes (Dunedin), multiple iron distance champion Carrie Lester of Australia and Wanaka-based German endurance athlete Simone Maier. Takaka-born Jenny Rose heads the women's field in the Wanaka Half which will also be staged on Saturday. A big contingent of Nelson and Tasman athletes have entered the race that has attracted 1200 competitors.

Skate tour kicks into gear The Tasman Skatepark Tour started with “a hiss and a roar” in Mapua last week, and already two legs down, event spokesperson Paul McConachie is predicting another successful tour. After Mapua, the tour hit Takaka on Saturday and will be in Tapawera tomorrow before reaching Motukea, Brightwater and Richmond in the coming weeks. Put on by Tasman District Council with the help of funding from the Canterbury Community Trust and sponsorship from Village Cycles and Cheapskates, the Tasman Skatepark Tour runs through summer each year giving BMX, skateboard and scooter riders the chance to compete for $7000 worth of hot prizes. The leader board returns this year, enabling the top competitor in each of the three disciplines to win a BMX bike, skateboard or scooter
depending on what they competed in. The bike is donated by Village Cycles with the scooter and skateboard provided by Cheapskates. Paul says different disciplines come to the fore at each of the stopovers, with the Mapua event providing the perfect starting point for 2014. “We had a good field in most of the categories and a good number of supporters cheering them on,” says Paul. “A lot of these guys have been with the tour for a few years and moved on through the age groups and from that they’ve made new friends. Because there is progression through the age groups there is a lot of good role modelling.” The Tasman Skatepark Tour will not be held in Wakefield this year while Nelson is also a notable absentee. A “resource” decision meant the tour was scaled back this year, which spelled the remov-
al of the Wakefield event, which was based around a mobile skate park. Nelson City Council did not want to fund an event at the Neale Park skate park. “There have been two Nelson heats since I’ve been involved but essentially it is a Tasman Skatepark Tour and if Nelson City Council or The Truck want to come on board we give them an opportunity but they weren’t interested this year.” The Richmond and Motueka competitions are generally the most popular of the six and will be two of the last three events. The Motueka competition will be held at the skate park on Old Wharf Rd on Saturday January 18 from 2pm before the Brightwater Skate Park at the domain hosts the tour on Wednesday January 22 from 5pm, and then lastly the Richmond competition at Jubilee Park on Saturday 25 from 2pm.

Student wins sea swim Nelson College student Luke Kelly continued his dominance of the Clements Doors and Windows Endurance Sea Swim series winning the annual Eyebright Mile at Tahunanui on Sunday. Luke, 16, had already won last month's 3.8km Ironman Challenge swim and posted his second consecutive long distance win in Sunday's Eyebright Mile. Luke completed the two kilometre swim from the Nelson Yacht Club to Tahunanui Beach in 25 minutes and 48 seconds to edge out Matt Hansen (25min 57sec) and Waimea College student Hayden Squance (26min 40sec). "It got pretty rough in the middle so it was a hard swim," Luke says. Luke, who swims for Nelson South, is preparing for the national age group championships in Wellington in April when he will contest all the freestyle events. Matt, who also finished second to Luke in the Ironman Challenge says, "I had a good swim but I can't keep up with these young guys - they are too fast." Under-16 swimmer Pip Dwyer finished in 28min 37sec to just beat Grace Woodall by 20 seconds in the women's
FooTbAll: NZ King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons got their season off the perfect start on Sunday. Thanks to goals by Omar Guardiola and debutant Josh Lis, the Falcons managed to beat last year’s ASB Youth League finalists Southern United 2-0 in Dunedin. The Falcons next face Heartland Wairarapa in Blenheim this weekend. SpEEDwAY: Ian Burson has gone one further than his third placing at last year’s New Zealand Supersaloon Championship, finishing second place at the 2014 event in Auckland on the weekend. Ian was the top qualifier in group three and his performance highlighted a strong weekend for Nelson Speedway with the Tasman Thunder finishing inside the top four at the NZ Stockcar Teams Champs in Palmerston North. TEnniS: Last month we incorrectly named a member of the Tahunanui Tennis Club as its club coach. The coach at Tahuna is Suzanne Spencer and if you're interested in getting some coaching her phone number is 027 522 0115.
