Land change plan ‘kick in the guts’ Sara Hollyman Reporter

sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz sara@nelsonweekly.co.nz

Plans for new land classifications in Tasman have been labelled as a “kick in the guts” for rural land owners. Tasman District Council earlier this year released draft maps of areas to be labelled Outstanding Natural Landscapes, Outstanding Natural Features, or the Coastal Environment area. According to council, the move was part of a project “to protect the district’s special places for future generations”. The classification has been created to protect land from “inappropriate subdivision, use, and development”. However, rural landowners say the restrictions under the classification will be the nail in the coffin for many farmers, with increased costs and restrictions on land use. Three Tasman landowners, who all asked not to be named, are concerned over what the changes will mean for their properties. They say they are worried they will no longer be able to build a new shed, build a home, or add roading

infrastructure across their farms. One is concerned for the future of his farm that has been in the family for more than 100 years. “We have heavily invested in a new venture that we are not sure is going to be viable yet, but potentially we could now have a big chunk of our land that’s locked up in a venture that’s not viable and not be allowed to change it back. It puts us in a real bind.” Tasman District Council environmental policy manager Barry Johnson says it’s too early to say exactly what will and won’t be allowed under the classifications. “Generally, if you’re doing things now you should be able to carry on doing them.” Barry says some of the restrictions will be site specific, such as building a house or putting in a road, and would then be dealt with through the resource consent process. “Within reason, if you’re building a new house on the farm to accommodate workers, with the same intensity and scale that you have now, then generally we want to provide for that.”

Frozen lake dreams at Rotoiti July’s freezing temperatures gave locals and visitors the chance to enjoy a skate on the pond at Lake Rotoiti. There were different levels of skill, from those who had skated before to men who took a few steps and fell over, but everyone had smiles on their faces. Four-year-old Maple Smith loved being pulled around on a sleigh. The temperatures dropped to around -9 degrees earlier this month, but it was the consistent lows that strengthened the ice. A few skaters learned that it wasn’t as solid near the edges, falling through and getting wet to their knees. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.

Land change plan ‘kick in guts’ from PAGE 1 But the landowners say this is all part of the problem. “The cost of resource consent everytime you want to do anything, it’s another kick in the guts for farmers,” says the landowner. “My concern is that this is just the beginning of a lot of stuff that’s going to restrict farmers’ ability to manage their own properties.” He says that landowners take pride in looking after their land and the environment, while making a sustainable living. “We’ve all fenced off our waterways, planted natives, culled goats and pests, how much more do we have to do?” One landowner says you

should be able to choose whether your land is part of the plan or not. “You should be able to say we don’t want anything to do with it, we wish for our farm to be taken off it. If people want to be part of it, then that’s fine. We just want to be left alone.” Another farmer says communication from council has been terrible. “For me there has been a lack of transparency and a serious lack of communication.” He says, after receiving a letter in the mail, trying to find out more information about the proposal had been like looking for a needle in a haystack. “They put stuff all in that pamphlet. It’s so secretively hidden in their website you

can’t find a thing, I’ve taken part in the online webinars and they couldn’t answer simple questions.” Barry says some questions are currently difficult to answer. “What we’re doing is driven by the legislation and the requirements from central government and there’s more coming: fresh water, biodiversity, identifying and protecting wetlands. “Compliance costs won’t be insignificant, that’s a really big issue. It’s an issue for council, it adds up to more rates, time and staff. “It’s hard for us, it’s really stressful, There’s a lot of change. We are really conscious of the stress on landowners, it’s a very difficult time for everyone.”

Disruption of hospital services possible Jenny Nicholson Sick leave and strikes could lead to disruptions of services at Nelson Hospital in the coming months. Nelson Hospital general manager of clinical services, Pat Davidsen, says sick leave is on the rise among staff. “Anecdotally we are seeing considerable sick leave among many clinical and non-clinical staff currently, as winter illnesses increase in number.” He says that at times sick leave results in cancellation of services, including postponing and rescheduling surgery. However, he states this is the absolute last option and the hospital has contingency plans in place to cover many situations. “The length of time for the rescheduled appointment varies, depending on the theatre team’s availability and those bookings already made,” he says. Nurses last week also voted in favour of three strikes to be held, for 24 hours on 29 and 30 July and again on 9 and 10 September, and another eighthour strike on 19 August. This follows an earlier strike in June which saw services

‘Towering’ building concerns residents

Street changes reversed after trial

Jenny Nicholson

The council has listened to the residents and some trialled changes to local streets will be reversed. Feedback from the Streets for People in the Croucher/D’Arcy neighbourhood was evaluated by the Tasman District Council (TDC) alongside traffic speed data collected, and they are making several changes. Local resident Christine Stanton says she is very pleased that the council have listened to the people. The meeting highlighted the areas the residents were not happy about, particularly having Elizabeth Street closed at one end. Elizabeth Street will be re-opened within a month and some parking spaces that were removed from the street will be reinstated. The narrowing of Florence Street will be removed. During the 8 am to 6 pm period, 180-minute time limits on parking spaces will be trialled in some areas. With regular parking occupancy above 85 per cent during work hours, the limits aim to provide spaces for visitor parking and limiting it to work hours will allow residents’ parking overnight. The TDC heard residents’ concerns about cars parked on both sides of the road making it too narrow, so not all spaces will be reinstated. The Talbot St zebra crossing will be upgraded with a raised speed table designed to reduce vehicle speeds to around 30kmh. There was concern from residents about the height of speed humps, but they have been measured and are within the accepted range. The TDC says it understands that the opening of Elizabeth St will allow some to avoid the speed humps. Further changes will be investigated in September.

Richmond residents living next to a vast two-storey building that will be built as part of a new lifestyle village are concerned how the structure may “tower” over them. However, despite raising complaints last year they are now resigned to their new neighbour, which has just been granted consent. Olive Estate Lifestyle Village’s new care facility will be a 108m-long structure and built parallel to Hill Street. It will comprise of three wings and has a footprint of about 4,400m², with 85 rooms catering for residents with dementia or those needing extra care. The care facility building complies with the zone’s maximum permitted height of 7.5m, except for one section called the crow’s nest which exceeds it by up to

The crow’s nest will house a 24-hour nurses’ station and will be 10m high. Residents from neighbouring properties in Brenda Lawson Way and Fawdan Way filed submissions last year raising concerns over how the building would tower over them. However, despite the light, noise and privacy issues highlighted, construction of the building is going ahead. The north-eastern end of each of the building’s three

wings is located between 20m and 30m of the nearest houses in Brenda Lawson Way. As a result, residents face the prospect of six months of earthworks followed by construction of large structures nearby, elevated above their properties, over a period of up to three years. Fencing and strategic planting of trees is thought to be the main solution. There have also been a few tweaks to the design of the building, such as remov-

ing windows directly facing residential properties. Tegan Goodman, from Brenda Lawson Way, says while their home is reasonably set back from the new building, residents on Fawdan Way are really fearful. “They are just absolutely towered over. It’s very close proximity.” However, Tegan says the consent was a “fair process”. “But it’s disappointing that the council don’t have anything in place to protect existing residents from a building of that size and scale.” A further 61 villas and 23 terrace houses are proposed for the remaining greenspace, with a new public access road connecting Hill Street to Fairose Drive. An ornamental pond, which is currently home to ducks and other wildlife, will be drained and filled once work begins. Will you be affected by the project? Let us know. Email jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz.

Richmond Ford fans Dale Cook and Ian Hanford are joining about 200 other local Ford owners to celebrate the founder of the car company, Henry Ford’s, birthday. President of Ford Club Nelson, Ian drives a 1966 Mustang which he has owned for 20 years. He says it is his dream car from years back and he never thought he would be in a situation to own one. Dale, pictured in his 1947 Mercury, says it’s not a car he would take out every day and neither is his 2015 Mustang which also sits in one of his garages. The celebration of Ford’s birthday will be held from 10am to 2pm on Sunday 25 July at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park. Entry is by gold coin and all proceeds will go to the hospice. Their last event raised about $2,500 and they are hoping to exceed that amount this year. Photo: Jenny Nicholson.

Millions more to dam project

Highly fractured rock and inflation means there will be millions of dollars added to the cost of the Waimea dam. Waimea Water Ltd chief executive Mike Scott last week told Tasman District councillors that they were looking at a budget of close to $164 million. The project was first forecast to cost $75.9 million when it went out for public consultation in 2017. Construction was now expected to be completed in mid-2022, Mike said.

Community spirit on a roll

After a wheelchair was stolen outside The Warehouse in Richmond last week, locals rallied round to raise enough funds to replace it. The wheelchair was left behind by mistake but when family members went back to get it, it had gone. The wheelchair belonged to an 88-year-old woman who desperately needed it. So, when word spread on social media, $350 was raised within 24 hours to get her a new one. The family were grateful to those who donated but didn’t wish to be identified as they are embarrassed by the whole situation.

It was a very long day for Manu and Nic Roland when their three-day old baby Reggie had a nine-hour heart surgery. But for his mum Manu, everything after his birth was easier than the uncertainty of her pregnancy, knowing that Reggie would likely have significant heart problems. “He was pretty messed up,” Nic says. “The plumbing was all backwards.” Reggie’s condition was picked up at the 20-week scan and Manu says it was very scary being told the baby she was carrying had heart problems. “The experts were great, but the emotional support came from Heart Kids,” Nic says. “They reached out to us and offered support and information.” He says talking with someone who had been through the journey they had ahead of them was incredibly helpful. Hearing what was likely to happen at different stages took away a lot of the anxiety. “You go from being in the dark to a little more aware of what will happen, which will be full on, but it’s good to know,” he says.

Three-year-old Reggie Roland, who was born with a heart condition, with his dad Nic who is running a fundraiser for Heart Kids. Photo: Jenny Nicholson. The family had finally returned home when they were called back to Auckland for a routine check-up for then nine-month-old Reggie. It was found that his heart rate was sitting at about 45 beats per minute, instead of the norm for his age of more than 100. This meant another surgery, this time to insert a pacemaker which now keeps his heart beating at about 80 beats per minute. Reggie can do everything an average three-year-old can do. Nic says nothing stops him.

While Reggie won’t be able to play contact sports because of the pacemaker, the family still have plans to go skiing this year. Reggie’s twin siblings Eddie and Quinn also had a dramatic start to life. They were born nine weeks early in Wellington hospital before being transferred to Nelson Hospital just in time for lockdown. Manu and the babies spent all of lockdown in Nelson Hospital with Nic unable to see them. Heart Kids New Zealand’s mission is to provide life-

long support to anyone affected by a childhood heart condition, and someone who can listen, offer practical advice and share information. Heart Kids says that there are two babies born each week in New Zealand with a congenital heart defect and there are thousands of families across the country impacted by it. Nic and Manu are holding a Heart Kids fundraising dance party at The Playhouse on 21 August. For more information or to book for the dinner and dance, phone 03 540 2985.

New mountainbike park coming to Wakefield Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A group of Wakefield volunteers are in the early stages of transforming a huge forestry block into a new mountainbike park. The group were given access to the land by forestry company OneFortyOne, but it’s been left to the community to plan, organise and manage the project. One of the volunteers, Kate West, says the new “Kainui MTB Park” will be located adjacent to Tunnicliffe Forest just south of Wakefield and will feature grade 2 and 3 trails, which the region currently lacks. “To have easy and intermediate tracks will help those families

who want to go biking.” The MTB Trails Trust, which exists to turn the Top of the South into a top mountainbiking destination, is overseeing the project as it starts to take shape on the 131ha section. Trust treasurer Alan Eskrick says the trails at Kainui will mostly be hand built with the use of a digger if required. “We are looking for keen mountainbikers who can spare a bit of their time – young and old – to come and help out.” Kate says it is up to the community to turn the plan into a reality and thanked Chris Mildon, who worked extensively with OneFortyOne, to get the project off the ground. The park will link up with the Great Taste Trail, offering rid-

ers the chance to access the site from there. OneFortyOne’s environmental planner, Jo Field, says the company is excited to see the new park in action and hopes the community will get involved in its development. The company has also set aside some funds for the first two trails. The volunteer group has been holding regular track-building workshops. “We had a nice surprise when we turned up on Sunday,” says Kate. “There isn’t as much gorse to clear as we initially thought. I took my 10-year-old along and she loved helping out.” She says the onus is on the community to keep the project going by building and maintaining it.

Mia losing locks is personal Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

When Mia Fraser first considered shaving her head to raise money for charity, she had no idea that a few weeks later the cancer journey would touch her family. Mia’s 27-year-old sister Alysha was diagnosed with breast cancer, which cemented Mia’s decision to join others at Garin College in the Shave for a Cure challenge. Save for a Cure raises money for Leukemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, which supports patients and their families living with a blood cancer or a related blood condition. “It wasn’t a huge decision for Mia,” says her mum Georgie. “All the sisters are very close.” Mia was one of five Garin College students and two teachers who had their heads shaved, and together they have raised well over $7,500 for Shave for a Cure.

Maddie Hall always had long hair and, because it was over 35cm in length, was able to donate her hair to go toward making a wig. She says multiple people’s hair goes into making up one wig. “I’ve always wanted to shave my head. I’m not worried about having my head shaved but wonder about the in between bit,” she says. “Also, cancer is pretty horrible and if I can help people, that would be great.” Ethan Speers was thinking of his mum’s mum and dad’s dad who both passed away due to cancer. He was joined by his father, teacher Tom Speers, who says he had his head shaved to support Ethan. Barber Kyle Crittenden, from Stormy’s Man Cave Barbershop, says he feels honoured to be part of Shave for a Cure. “I think it is such a pivotal moment in girls’ lives when they choose to shave their head,” he says. “So much of their identity is in their hair. It’s extremely inspirational to see them do this.

Taking the chilly plunge for charity Jo Kent Reporter

Sheryl Jarden and her team will be in icy waters this weekend for a Winter Swim Challenge. The Richmond Aquatic Centre swim instructors will brave the waves at Tāhunanui Beach on Sunday 18 July to raise money for Kenzie’s Gift, a charity which supports the mental health of young Kiwis facing serious illness or grief. “We’re doing it wetsuit-free, but we’ll probably have a couple of caps on to keep our heads warm,” says Sheryl. “We often go for a swim or do a half marathon together. So, when we saw this challenge, we thought we should give it a crack and go for a cold swim.” The Winter Swim Challenge runs until August and was set up by Nic Russell, who lost her three-year-old daughter to cancer. The charity provides one-onone therapy with registered mental health professionals and extensive resources to support tamariki through life’s toughest challenges. When Nic discovered the health benefits associated with cold-water swimming, she de-

We want to hear your opinions on what matters to you and your community waimeaweekly

What do you think about the proposed ‘neighbourhood greenway’ road changes to Richmond? Looking forward to having no more speeding idiots flying through Squire Way or doing burnouts on the Middlebank, Olympus Way and Squire Way intersection. We are really concerned that someone

Several speed bumps across Cautley Street would be most welcome. Drivers avoiding the traffic lights along Gladstone Road have turned Cautley Street into a racetrack. Sandra Trevor Gately

We don’t want this at all. We live on Waverley Street and no one’s asked us what we think. Hayley Neal

As long as they don’t paint butterflies & bees on the road like the NCC

I don’t think it really matters what people think, feel, want or need to see happen... The council will do what they want regardless. Manda Wicks

I would love a proper pedestrian crossing on Hill Street, with the new subdivisions on either end the amount of road traffic has doubled and lots also use Hill Street to bypass Salisbury Road, which has made it busier and harder for our children to safely cross the road in the little barrier that is currently there. Gary and Lisa Watson met the team at Gary & Lisa Watson visited Pic’s Peanut Butter World, and wow, what an awesome experience they had, packed full of freshly roasted peanut butter facts. They met the friendly local team of peanut butter producers and Pic himself, as they watched nuts turn to butter - It’s just incredible how lovingly squeezed Pic’s peanut butter really is. Gold rush comes to Murchison Ruth Russ

In March 1864, the Colonist reported on gold found at the Mātakitaki River near Murchison. The rush had been caused a year earlier after discovery of gold by George Moonlight, who had seen the California, Victoria and Otago goldfields. There were now more than 200 miners at the Mātakitaki field, and the gold discovered there was very fine. It was so fine, in fact, that it had to be caught in blankets as it left the sluice. The plentiful site attracted Chinese settlers, as well as disgruntled miners from the less-than-forthcoming Lyell and Wakamarina sites. By the end of the year, the number of miners had climbed to 400,

and they made up to two pounds a day. Even the mossicans (those who scrape the moss from the rocks and wash what gold may be had out of it) could earn about 10 shillings a day. The Colonist reported that the price of living was only about 25 shillings a week, leaving “a tolerable margin with even the least successful”. While the price of living was perhaps not high, the cost matched the conditions. When Mrs E. Dellow, the only woman at the nearby Doughboy rush, became very ill, the men with her made an improvised stretcher and took turns at carrying her the four miles from the site to her brother-in-law’s house. The Colonist’s reporter writes, “It was a sight not to be easily forgotten, big rough-looking men with kind hearts and

no easy task, as the track is only [single file], sometimes in mud knee deep, at others through water and over roots and logs, with the rain often pouring down.” The men took turns carrying Mrs Dellow on her stretcher, and the four-mile journey took three and a half hours, at the end of which there was not even a doctor. However, several neighbouring women were called for and managed to pull Mrs Dellow through. “This is just one of the many hardships that some of the backsettlers have to put up with,” said the Colonist, “but some of the women will go wherever their husbands are willing to go.” In 1871, a correspondent noted that the first clergyman had visited them, Father Chareyre, adding, “we have heard that one

adventurous Nelson parson did brave the terrors of Lake Hill, having surmounted which obstacle, he ‘fainted by the way’ and went back. Sunday comes and goes pretty much like any other day, and only one of our shepherds seems to care a rush about the poor sheep in the wilderness.” There were alleged gold robberies, and “vague stories” of “outrages” floated back to the towns, but men continued to search for gold at Mātakitaki for many years, despite the less-civilised living. As an anonymous poet mused in 1895, “Ye silver spoon men, covet not / The hardships of a digger’s lot, / Tho’ distant fields look green. / The intermediate’s fraught with briers, / Swamps, and supplejacks, like wires; / The foreground hides the scene.”

Giving out of grief Jenny Nicholson It was that phone call no-one wants, and it changed Hadassah’s world. She had just returned home from visiting her family in Alaska four days before. Nothing could have prepared her for the news that her mother and sister had been killed in a car accident. Within four hours she was back on a plane, heartbroken and at the start of a journey that would change her as a person. Now, she has put together a course to help others going through the grief journey. While her story was one of family members dying, she says the principles can be applied to grief in other areas. Life not turning out as expected and loss of a job or friendship can also cause grief. And everyone’s grief journey is individual. “Even if you talk to five people who have lost their mums, it will be five different stories,” she says. The car accident was at 2 pm on a perfectly clear afternoon. The driver hadn’t been drinking and wasn’t on his phone. He just looked down for a moment and the next minute drove his truck into Hadassah’s mum’s car. The driver was only 21 years old, and Hadassah says she has felt a lot of compassion for him. She knows anger would have made the journey even harder if the driver was drunk. A year down the track she realised she had dealt with grief well. That doesn’t mean having a great time. But having seen others deal with it less healthily she wanted to help. For a long time the journey was her world. She was dealing with it all day and every day. And she was ok with that. “Accepting your emotions is important,” she says. “Don’t try other stuff or they will squirt out sideways and can hurt others.” Having been through an earlier journey of grief when her best friend died at 21, she knew she wanted to handle things differently. During her earlier grief she hadn’t taken time to process, and

Hadassah Hayes who has taken keys from her grief journey to help others. Photo: Jenny Nicholson. it had impacted her relationships. “Westerners like goals,” she says, “and grief doesn’t fit them. They can actually add pressure. Instead, look at how a person can start to get their head above water. Look at the hope things won’t feel as acute in time.” “In a year you may feel different and be functioning more. But you won’t be fine,” she says. This week she was packing and broke a dish that her mum had often cooked in. She cried and says some days still feel awful, and the feelings still feel fresh. But she has learned to be sad in those moments and then move on with her day. Where previously she could go from party to party and come home buzzing, now she has scaled back and knows the importance of time alone. Hadassah is a Christian and a life coach. While faith has been integral in her processing, the tips and guidelines in her course are for everyone. She is clear she isn’t a counsellor and what she is sharing is from what she has learnt. The course is $49, and Hadassah can be contacted regarding the course via Facebook on hadassah. hayes or Instagram on hadassah_ hayes.

Age Concern Age Concern Nelson Tasman is growing! We’ve been delighted to welcome some great new staff to our team this year, bringing us to a total of nine people working from our office in Richmond. We do deliver services all over the region and have been working hard this year to get out and about to the more remote parts of Tasman, including Murchison

and Tapawera. All of our services – whether it’s matching someone with a volunteer visitor, helping them out of an abusive situation, or delivering fun activities and exercise – have at their core a desire to see all our older people connected, supported, safe and valued by their neighbourhoods and communities. We’re delighted to have produced a beautiful photographic exhibition recently called Beyond the Face, featuring 12 portraits and stories from some of our members. It’s currently on display in the window of the Nelson City Council offices on Trafalgar Street. Why not pop past and have a look!

Ingham brings up his century SportS Jonty Dine Reporter

jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz jonty@nelsonweekly.co.nz

An eight-year-old Tom Ingham was playing mini-ball at Henley School when he won a ‘Giant effort award,’ which included tickets to the Nelson Giants’ next home game. At the time, Tom dreamed of playing for the Black Caps, but this soon changed as he was introduced to basketball. “The folks took me along and I loved the pace, intensity and just fell in love with the sport.” Twenty years later, Tom would bring up a first-class century, however it was not with the bat but in a Giants’ singlet. Tom made his 100th appearance for his beloved franchise during their 119-85 win over the Franklin Bulls in Nelson on Thursday evening. “As a kid in the stands watching the Giants for all those years, and then to celebrate 100 games with my own family and friends in the stands, was pretty special.” Born and bred in Nelson, Tom

Nelson Giant Tom Ingham was presented with his 100 appearances certificate by his idol Phill Jones. Photo: Shuttersport. grew up idolising the likes of Phill Jones and Ed Book. He still recalls his first NBL point which came on his first road trip on his 18th birthday. “Phill took me under his wing for better or worse,” he jokes. The 2018 run to the finals is another fond memory for the point guard. “We tripped up at final hurdle, but we dominated the entire season and it was a really good group of lads.”

Tom was first selected in the Giants as a 16-year-old in 2010. “When my name got called it was pretty epic. I sprinted home - I couldn’t wait to tell mum and dad.” During his debut, an exuberant Tom rushed out onto the court during the pre-game introductions. “I was so excited I ran about 30 metres ahead, the old fellas told me to slow down, so I had to go to a walk so they could catch up.”

The teenager was a barrel of nerves as he was called off the bench. He says he quickly learned a number of lessons, including the fact that nothing is given. The 28-year-old is hugely popular with both fans and teammates which he attributes to the energy and passion he plays with. He is also well-known off the court through his work as a teacher at Nelson Intermediate. He says, while it can be a juggling act, he loves both his careers. “From day dot, Nelson Intermediate have looked after me and have given me every opportunity to progress as a basketballer, but in the teaching profession as well.” After 100 games, Tom is hopeful to play 100 more and of breaking a 14-year championship drought. “If I can end my career as an NBL champion I will walk away very satisfied.” One thing is for sure, he will never play for another franchise. “I’m a Giants’ lifer.”

rugby: The Tasman Mako women were far too strong for Ngāti Porou East Coast, running out 81-0 victors. On Sunday, the High-Performance men’s side took on the New Zealand Under 20’s captained by Nelson’s Anton Segner. The Baby Blacks claimed the win at Lansdowne Park 40-5. Football: A total of 25 goals were scored across the four matches on Saturday in the Nelson Bays division one. Rangers and FC Nelson both netted six. Motueka beat Tahuna 5-3 and in women’s action, Suburbs beat FC Nelson 1-0 while the Richmond Foxes beat Blenheim Bullets 3-1. Netball: Another epic showdown between the region’s two best sides closed out the second phase of the Nelson Premier Netball Competition on Thursday evening. Once again it was just a solitary point that separated Jacks OPD and Prices Waimea Ahurei as the sides went to war at Saxton Stadium. Jacks exacted its revenge with a 42-41 win and ended Prices’ eight-match unbeaten streak. On court two NCG pipped Jacks Magenta 57-53. In the round’s final fixture, Stoke NBS defeated Richmond45 by 49-32 in overtime.

Local racers square up for Enduro Philip Hagan It’s relentless. The NZ Enduro Champs does not let up. It keeps coming at the drivers for 700km of rough roads and bush tracks. The Enduro doesn’t care that the drivers are wet, cold, wind-blown and covered in mud. It keeps on coming. For the 30 race cars and 50 drivers, this weekend’s race will take a toll. Organisers are expecting an attrition rate of more than 50 percent, meaning fewer than 15 finishers are expected. Many of the race cars will fall by the way in unspectacular style. But for some, it will be a spectacular demise as race cars collide with the scenery. Flat tires will be common. Some racers will opt to race on a blown tire, trying to limp the car back to the pits. With the 35km lap length, this usually results in the rubber completely disintegrating and the aluminium rim becoming shrapnel wrapped tightly around the hub. In many cases it will be the driver who let go before anything on the car fails. Seven hundred kilometres in the Golden Downs Forest is like driving from Nelson to Invercargill on a gravel road that drives through the rivers, rather than over them. In this chaos, experience counts. Many of the racers in the Enduro Champs are seasoned distance racing competitors. Local racers Dan Fisher and Alex Bright are sharing the drive of #110 and feel their knowledge of the forest is a

At 25mins per lap this race is great for spectators to view the cars regularly at the viewing point by the pits. The racers will need every advantage they can get with ORANZ champions Joel Giddy and Carl Ruiterman teaming up to race #S16, a fully-developed Yamaha side-by-side racer that could very well be on the podium on Sunday. Another strong duo competing are father and son Leigh and Matthew Bishop. At 14-yearsold, Matthew will be the copilot for his dad Leigh. This is quite an endorsement of the skillset Matthew has been developing over the last six years. Doing the full race distance solo are also some of the hardest racers in the country. Todd Graham from Hawkes Bay brings his single seater across the strait for the second time this year. Paul Smith is determined to add the Enduro Champs overall trophy to the cabinet alongside his 2019 Woodhill 100 winner trophy. And just wait till you see Maurice Bain from the Waikato club, in his V6powered “New Beetle”, Baja Bug.

This huge race distance has brought a large contingent of racers to Nelson from all parts of the North Island. But they won’t get an easy run from the Southern contingent. The cold, wet conditions are expected to work in the favour of the more local racers. Let’s hope the northerners can acclimatise on the journey to Nelson by leaving the tow vehicles’ windows down as they head south. The southern charge at this race is stacked full of offroad racers who have tasted glory in national competition. Bub Uttridge takes on the full race distance in his turbocharged 1000cc Yamaha. Darrin Thomason lines up in the V6 powered Toyota Tundra race truck and legendary offroad racer Barry Phillips lines up with codriver Jake Phillips in a 1000cc turbo-charged Yamaha sideby-side. The scene is set for a legendary contest. To watch the Enduro NZ on July 17 and 18, follow the signs into the forest from Wakefield. There is no charge for admission to the event. Coffee and food caterer in the pits. Bring a picnic.

A little over five years ago, Andrew Knewstubb was picking apples in Tasman and living at the Riwaka Tavern. The electric outside back was plugging away in club rugby for Kahurangi with his future looking likely to be in landscaping. However, this blueprint was thrown out the window when Andrew switched his focus to the seven-a-side game. He enjoyed a rapid rise in the ranks and, at just 21, he went from a tradesman in training to travelling the world with the All Black sevens team. Now, ‘Stubby’, as he is known, is set for his biggest stage yet as he makes his Olympic debut in Tokyo this month. “My parents always told me that going to the Olympics would be one of the biggest accomplishments you can ever achieve and was something I never thought I’d be able to reach until getting picked for the team five years ago.” The day Andrew learned of his selection was one of the most emotional of his life. “Knowing how hard everyone has worked and knowing some will miss out and some will

Photo: Shuttersport. make it.” He says the goal was always lingering in the back of his mind. “When I made the sevens team it had just come off the last Olympics so, from then, it was always about building to the next one.” Tokyo will be one of the most unique Olympic Games in history with no crowds permitted due to Covid-19 restrictions. Andrew attended the 2018 Commonwealth Games and is looking forward to experiencing the village again, which he says was “unreal”.

“I’m sure it’ll be a bit different with Covid and stuff but hopefully it’s a similar feel.” Of course, an Olympics brings global sporting superstars, some of whom Andrew is hoping to rub shoulders with. “I’m a big basketball fan so meeting some of them would be awesome.” He says the team has every chance of bringing home a gold medal. “We are well aware that there are 12 other teams with the same goal ... but we know we’re up for it.”

Ngaio Reserve opening

Lower Queen Street works

Māpua’s newest park is officially opening, and you are invited. Ngaio Reserve will be officially opened with a public ceremony at 10.00 am on Sunday 18 July.

Due to the cold fronts over the country, overnight temperatures have been too cold to complete the Asphaltic Concrete work overnight on Lower Queen Street, leaving Headingly Lane intersection and the connection to McShanes Road left to complete.

After months of deliberations, 1,719 public submissions and countless hours of work behind the scenes, Tasman’s 10-Year Plan 2021 – 2031 has been adopted. Read more on our website, tasman.govt.nz/ltp.

Outstanding Community Service Awards Often the unsung heroes of Tasman District fly under the radar, working tirelessly in the background in roles that keep the wheels of numerous community groups and organisations turning. Now is the time for these fabulous people to be officially recognised in our annual Outstanding Community Service Awards. Nominations are now open for this year’s awards. Nominees must be residents of Tasman District and have been involved in a range of voluntary activities that have benefited their community for 20 years or more. Nomination forms are available on our website and at all our service centres and libraries – please use them when nominating someone for an award. Nominations close at the end of August. Visit tasman.govt.nz and search 'community awards'.

Register your dogs now Register your dogs by 31 July 2021 to avoid penalty fees. You can register your dog online, in person or by mail. If any of your details have changed, such as your address or the number of dogs you own, you also need to let us know. Visit tasman.govt.nz/dog-registration.

Get funding for your community project Do you have an exciting community project in the pipeline? Community Grants help get some of our most valuable community projects off the ground, and this round of funding is open until 31 July 2021. Funding is available for projects that are either Tasman-based or will benefit Tasman residents, meet a community need and have community support. Priority will be given to projects that align with our community outcomes and can show financial support from other sources as well. For more information and to apply visit tasman.govt.nz/grants.

Free car seat checks extended! Our free car seat check promotion with Nelson City Council and Baby on the Move has been so successful that it has been extended until the end of July. To book a free car seat check, call 03 547 2555, email nelson@babyonthemove.co.nz or message Baby On The Move – Nelson on Facebook.

Moturoa / Rabbit Island – Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game pheasant hunt Public access to the eastern half of Moturoa / Rabbit Island will be closed for an organised game bird hunt on Saturday 17 July, 8.30 am – 3.00 pm (Sunday 18 July reserve day). The closure will include all of the beach front at the eastern end. For more details contact Jacob Lucas at Nelson Marlborough Fish & Game on 03 544 6382.

Summer student internships

Work will start again when the overnight temperatures are forecast to increase on 18 July, taking four nights to complete. Work will start from 6.00 pm until 6.00 am on these nights. Roads will remain open, but there will be traffic management in place.

We're asking for expressions of interest from students who are interested in working for us over the summer period, from mid-November to midFebruary. This year we have vacancies in Engineering Services, Environmental Policy, Environmental Information (Hydrology, Resource Science and Biosecurity), Regulatory (Compliance Monitoring and Harbourmaster), and Information Technology. Applications close Sunday 1 August. For more information and to apply, visit careers.tasman.govt.nz.

Drinking water improvements across Tasman

Final changes coming to the Croucher/ D’Arcy neighbourhood

For the 1.3-million-dollar Brightwater and Wakefield water treatment plants upgrades we are using the same contractor which means both projects can be coordinated leading to cost savings.

The Streets for People trial has ended in D’Arcy and Croucher streets in Richmond. We would like to thank all those who took part in the community meetings and surveys. Community feedback was vital in this project and alongside the traffic and speed data we collected has led to the adoption of several changes. • Elizabeth Street will re-open within a month. • Florence Street narrowing will be removed, this includes the planter boxes. • There will be a trial of a limited number of daytime 180-minute parking spaces to provide some visitor spaces. Those limits will only apply between 8.00 am and 6.00 pm allowing overnight parking for residents. • Some of the parking spaces that were removed from Elizabeth Street will be reinstated. Research shows parking can provide benefits to the wider community and can help lower traffic speeds. However, residents' concerns about having car parks on both sides of the road, making it too narrow, have been noted so not all spaces will be reinstated. • We plan to upgrade the Talbot Street zebra crossing with a raised speed table. These raised tables are designed to reduce vehicle speeds to around 30km/h where pedestrians cross. • No-stopping hatching across the intersections of Florence Street / Salisbury Road and D'Arcy Street / Salisbury Road will be painted towards summer when temperatures warm up. Further changes will be investigated in September after budgets for the new financial year are confirmed. • Construction of a speed table across Elizabeth Street at the Talbot Street intersection. • A speed table at the intersection of Florence and Elizabeth Street to slow cars around the kindergarten. These should discourage through traffic, or “rat running” using those streets. • Widening the footpath between Linden Court and Talbot Street.

We are spending close to seven and a half million dollars on significant upgrades of water treatment plants to improve drinking water quality. Construction will start within the next month on five major water treatment projects in Dovedale, Pōhara, Motueka, Brightwater and Wakefield. Brightwater and Wakefield

The latest technology in filtration is being installed with ultraviolet treatment also being used. Site works for both are about to begin and are scheduled to be completed by the end of January 2022.

ROAD CLOSURES

Proposed temporary road closure Applicant: PF Olsen Limited Location: Sherry River Road. Forest entrance to approximately 2.5km inside the forest boundary due south of the entrance. Christian Creek Road will also be closed at the junction to Sherry River Road. This is due to forest harvesting activity. Date and time: 9 August – 17 December 2021. Objections close: 5.00 pm Monday 26 July 2021. Send objections to megan.bell@tasman.govt.nz
