Trade Me scam dupes Nelson user Phillip Rollo A Nelson Trade Me user was the target of the latest online scam by fraudsters attempting to sell credit card details. Stoke physiotherapist Diane Chandler had her home email address hacked by a “phishing email” disguising itself as a “Trade Me security advisor” and now wants to warn others to watch out for the bogus site. Phishing, also called “carding” or “brand spoofin”, is fishing for ID or credit card details through email, the internet and sometimes telephone. The email, saying Diane’s Trade Me account was suspended and requesting her to change her personal information – which included typing in her credit card details, due to a “a recent change in your personal information” – came just days after securing a new visa and a week after a bogus account with no feedback or sales history
had won one of Diane’s auctions but failed to reply. The email linked Diane to a website called “www. members.com/trademe” where she had to verify her email address, account password and credit card details. But there was one glaring mistake in the link, despite very “legit” logos and banners. “It was dot com, Trade Me is dot co dot nz,” says Diane. “It came up with a Trade Me site, then it asked for my credit card details and I thought ‘no, I don’t need to put that in TradeMe’.” That’s when I got suspicious. It looked really genuine.” Diane visited the real Trade Me website and logged in. There were no problems, or links suggesting her account had been suspended. She immediately changed her password and called a help desk at Trade Me. It cost Diane $1.99, including GST, per minute for

RARING TO GO: Dave and Pauline Richards say they are “so happy” the local community is getting in behind their son, cancer-stricken V8 supercar driver Jason Richards. ‘We’re so humbled and proud’ Jason Richard’s parents show support for racing fundraiser
Andrew Board Jason Richards doesn’t play a very good victim. But the amount of support the Aussie V8 supercar driver has attracted – from every top Formula One driver to three local mates – has humbled him and the entire family, say his parents. Thirty five year-old Jason, a born and
bred Nelsonian, is fighting an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer that “gets worse every day”. His medical expenses are skyrocketing as he scrambles to find a cure amongst a list of experimental drugs, one injection he had cost $2000 alone. Fundraisers are being held around the globe, including donations from Formula One and V8 Supercar driv-
ers, to this Saturday’s fundraiser held at ProKarts in Tahunanui. The fundraiser is being organised by Jason’s childhood friend Tony Dyer, along with mates Brendan Gridley and Nick Fowler and includes a Bathurst style race on the ProKarts track, with live commentary. The day will also feature

news for the Richards family this week. Jason’s cells only grew by 10 per cent over the last four week period, compared to the 50 to 60 per cent growth they have been getting. Dave says it is news like that that keeps them hoping for a miracle, and they are not alone. Money has come from all corners of the globe, but one donation was very special, he says. “There was this one guy at a race over there that really sticks with me. He asked if I was Jason’s dad and he gave me an envelope he wanted me to give to Jason. He was obviously a fan and was a bit unkempt so I took the envelope to Jason and inside was a $10 note. It was obviously a lot of money to him and meant a lot to Jason.” The fundraiser starts at 9.30am this Saturday at ProKarts in Tahunanui, next to the bumper boats, and will run most of the morning. If wet, it will be held on Sunday at the same time. To donate money to Jason’s fight visit NBS branches and ask to donate to the Race4Jace fund or bid on auctions on TradeMe under Race4Jace.

It read “Sito web in manutenzione” as of Monday afternoon. Diane says she was “angry” that she “half got suckered in” but was lucky that she did not give out her credit card details. She has changed the account she used for the family, selling old books, clothes and Playstation games, to make sure all her auctions are only bid by authenticated buyers only. She had not encountered any problems before but wanted to raise the awareness of the scam so it does not happen to anyone else. “Don’t give your credit card details out, unless you’re buying something,” she warns.

Rutherford Park ‘the next Saxton Field’ Nelson City Council will first protect its current performing arts centres before building a new one, says mayor Aldo Miccio. But despite deciding not to go ahead with a $58 million centre at Rutherford Park, council says Nelson will need a new centre and it will still develop the area. Due to be confirmed tomorrow the annual plan will include an upgrade of the northern end of Trafalgar Centre, at a cost of $9 million, and development of a Maitai walkway from Trafalgar St to Rutherford Park, which will cost $1.8 million. But any hope of a performing arts centre has been put on the backburner with councillors last Friday decided not to proceed with the controversial plan. Aldo says council needs to make

sure the existing Theatre Royal, Nelson School of Music and Sutar are performing well before another centre is built. “The performing arts centre hasn’t been dropped, there is still the same strong feeling around council that Nelson needs a theatre. It’s all about the timing and about the community being behind it and driving this project. Now it’s been put back to the public, back to the arts community, if the community wants this then you drive it.” Aldo says work will not begin at Rutherford Park until next year with the next 12 months focused on planning. He says the area will be important to the city and council plans to build on it as it did with Saxton Field and it would like to see a trust set up to explore options for a centre.

Nelson lads the latest to find Big Brother friendship Nine year-old Cody has a bucket list, but he doesn’t want to wait for the rest of his life to finish it. Luckily, his “big person”, 19 year-old Andy Klenner, is keen to join him for the ride. “It’s cool, I get to hang out with Cody and do all this cool stuff,” says Andy. “I’m really looking forward to it.” Andy and Cody are a part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters Nelson programme and met alone for the first time on Saturday. Andy says it was a “getting to know each other” day, but is already understanding he will have to sharpen up on a few things. On Cody’s list is fishing, biking, basketball and making paper planes. “That is something I will definitely have to work on. My planes don’t fly,” he jokes. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a charitable organisation committed to the healthy development of children and youth through the provision of oneto-one mentoring friendships with caring adult role models, says its local project director Gavin Millar. “We now have more than 100 young people matched with an older mentors in Nelson and it has massive benefits, for both parties.”
Andy works at Cartridge World in Nelson and says he decided to join the programme after seeing Big Brothers Big Sisters on a movie. “I thought, ‘oh that would be cool’ and began to try and find somewhere in Nelson that would do it. Once I found out there was one in Nelson I went for it, I thought if I hang out with a younger person then I can do all the stuff they do as well. I just wanted to have a bit of fun really.” Cody’s mum enrolled him in the programme hoping it would provide him with a positive male role model. Andy says he hopes to catch up with Cody every week or so and already has a few plans for their time together. “It’s going to be cool just to hang out but he tells me he likes art so I think I’ll take him out to Hoglund for a day and we will definitely have to go to a Giants game as well.” Gavin says despite the huge numbers of mentors already volunteering a small amount of time to the programme, there is a waiting list of young people waiting for a “big person” to befriend them. For more information on how to become a Big Brother or Big Sister write Gavin an email at gavin@bigbrothersbigsisters.org.nz. Advertorial

Teen mums head back to classroom, thanks to new programme Three months in and a brand new central Nelson school has already made a difference. The Nelson Teen Parent Education Unit is a school for teenage mothers, allowing them to study while their children are cared for in the next room. The model is new to Nelson but other units funded by the Ministry of Education are in centres around the country and allow young mothers to finish high school in an environment tailored to their needs. And it has already done wonders, with three students earning enough NCEA credits to qualify for tertiary education since the unit opened. Two are enrolling in a nursing course with the third into a mechanic course. All three would not have been able to
study for their dream careers without help of the unit says teacher Diana Nellor. “What I try to do is move them each towards their ambition, without a place like this a lot of them are stuck,” she says. The Nelson unit does not receive government funding though and relies on the generosity of several key community groups to keep it alive. Soroptimist Nelson are one of the major supporters, providing the childcare and the Abel Tasman Education Trust funds the project, while Nelson Impact Church has given the unit use of its rooms. Student Amanda Solloway says options were pretty thin on the ground when she had her child. “There was fulltime school and putting my child in daycare or studying by correspond-
ence, which is really hard. But here I still get to look after my child because they are right there. I know that if she is crying she will be tended to. So I’m not too distracted.” Student’s study what they want but Diana says she makes sure the girls are working towards a goal. “It’s a bridge; I don’t want any of them here doing aimless work. I’m trying to find their own individual pathway. “They all want to work as well, these young women want to do something for their future, they are bright as buttons but just wanted the chance to work.” Twelve teenagers have enrolled in the unit with a waiting list of more wanting to sign up.

Winter crowd rugs up for races After all that rain it’s no wonder punters turned out in their droves at the Richmond Park raceway on Sunday for the second day of the Winter Cup. Friday was rather miserable, but Sunday saw around 2,000 people pass through the gates, all the while making a donation to Hospice. In total $1721 was raised. On course betting was up $23,000 from last year’s event, with $103,000 being spent on course all together. Off course betting, bets made through the TAB, didn’t go so well. But Bill says this is a sign of the times. “Not many clubs are doing anywhere
near $100,000 so this result was great.” Best of the locals was Ian Thomas’ Gunman driven by his son Jason, who placed second on both Friday and Sunday. The trio say they will be heading to Blenheim this weekend where they hope do continue their good form. Winner of the Nelson Pine Industries Winter Cup was Canterbury driver Stephen McNally and six-win mare Jazmin Robyn. Stephen crossed the finish line more than a length in front of favourite River Field. Owners of the horse Graeme Edgar and Michelle Kennedy will be taking the Cup home, all the way down south to Tapanui, near Gore.

Bride of the Year raises a pretty penny Generous Nelsonians have helped make this year’s Bride of the Year a “tremendous” success. The event, held at the Hope Community Church Hall on Saturday night, was organised by local woman Heather Harley to raise funds for the Nelson Region Hospice Trust. Heather says thousands was raised. Winner on the night was Richmond’s Laura Paynter, with second place going to Motueka’s Alesha Sturgeon, third going to Atawhai’s Rachel Harris-Russell and fourth going to Stoke’s Michelle Harwood. Heather says she was very happy with the night, especially with the rather vocal crowd. Heather would like to thank the local businesses and everyone who supported this year’s event. It’s not rubbish, recycling works, says contractor

Nelsonians are some of the best recyclers in the country with around 80 per cent of recycled material put out for collection, says Nelmac. The recycling industry is working its way back from the brink after the global financial crisis left many recycled materials worthless. But Nelson contractor Nelmac says prices are creeping up and the region’s recycled glass, paper, cardboard, plastic and tin is all put to good use. Lindsay Bell says 3332 tonne of glass, paper, cardboard, plastics and cans was collected from the kerbside or dropped off at the Pascoe Street Recycle Centre
in 2010 and that figure is rising. He says from the start the recycling service, which commenced in 2004, was a hit with locals, almost catching them off guard. “We had estimated what we would collect but didn’t expect it to be that high straight away but Nelsonians were very receptive of it and it took off straight away. It created a few logistical nightmares because all the sorting was done by hand and it was obviously early on that we were going to have to change it so Nelmac went ahead and installed conveyer belts.” Glass collected by Nelmac is dropped off to Fulton Hogan who crushes it
and mixes it with their roading metal, while milk bottle plastic is sold to a Christchurch firm that makes it into pellets to sell to plastic manufactures. Lindsay says the money collected from selling raw recycled products isn’t enough to cover all costs but the more they make the less ratepayers need to contribute to the scheme. “The industry is sustainable, it’s good for carbon credits, the public do a good job and it saves it all going to landfill. Generally if you can get 80 per cent of people recycling that is pretty good internationally and we are around that figure in Nelson.”

Nelson tourism gets another push with i-SITE visit Twenty i-SITE travel consultants from around the country are in Nelson for a week, visiting the region’s “must do” places which they can then sell to tourists. The trip was arranged by Nelson Tasman Tourism and was aimed at giving staff at i-SITEs, often the first port of call for tourists, a better idea of what Nelson has to offer. The group spent
time in Nelson, Murchison, the Abel Tasman and will today head over to Golden Bay. NTT chief Lynda Keene says the trip has been going well and gives travel consultants a firsthand taste of the region which they can pass onto the tens of thousands of tourists in the country for the Rugby World Cup this September and October.
Young musical talent to play for pay A showcase of Nayland College’s top musical talents is hoping to help ease the costs of 66 students heading to Wellington to perform. On Tuesday June 21, Nayland College’s vocal company and orchestra will be joined by soloists Flora Lloyd, Marley Richards, Caitlin Gladstone as well as rock bands Crossfire, Penny Dreadful and Made In China in a fundraising show at the Nayland College hall. All money raised will aid the $420 each vocal company and orchestra member requires for a five day trip to Wellington next month where they will perform at five schools and once in Civic Square. Door sales are $5 with the performance beginning at 7:30pm. Doors open at 7:15pm for the show designed for all ages.
WATCH OUT WELLYWOOD: Nayland College students Caitlin Gladstone, 14, Nicky Marshall, 14, Alex Hargreaves, 16, and Kate Lovell, 14, will be performing next Tuesday to raise funds for a trip to Wellington. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• During the last week the port was very busy with seven container vessels loading and discharging. The Conti Harmony was an impressive ship to have inside the port at 210m long, 32m Beam and 31000tonnes GRT. • Another unique vessel was the methanol tanker which is only 120m compared to the usual 180m but can have a 9.5m draft as opposed to 7.5m. • The outstanding Transfuture car carrier, once described as driving a sky scraper on its side, also came and went during the weekend weather. • The Santa Regina Strait Freight service continued her regular weekly service call along with a log ship and 11 large fishing vessel movements that kept the port busy. • I observed a few stand up paddle boarders come through the port during the week and wondered if they had any idea what shipping was due and when. I have to congratulate most kayakers who generally stay out of the main channel and would trust the paddle boarders adopt the same policy. The two I watched may have had considerable difficulty getting out of the way of either the slow bigger vessels or the small faster ones. If you keep to the inside of the channel markers, toward the boulder bank, you will ensure you are quite safe. The weather is deteriorating as winter commences – please keep an eye on it. If in doubt…. don’t go out. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Drilling application spurs on community drive for clean A public meeting about how Nelson can help push towards a cleaner economy and stop oil drilling off the New Zealand coast is being held on Thursday night. Organiser Verena Maeder says it is important the government looks seriously at renewable energy. “We don’t want our gorgeous forests scarred, we don’t want our beaches and wildlife covered in oil, we don’t want
our young people working in dangerous jobs in coal mines and on oil rigs and we don’t want to be left with impossibly large bills for cleaning up the messes left by the extractive industries.” The meeting about how the Nelson community can be part of the national campaign on issue will start at 7pm at the Trafalgar Pavilion, Trafalgar St this Thursday, 16 June. Speakers include Kevin Hague MP,
Debs Martin from Forest and Bird, Helen Tulett from Coal Action Network and Nathan Argent from Greenpeace. The public meeting planned in Nelson is one of many events throughout the country, aiming at informing the public about these issues, offering a platform to discuss energy strategy, and building a movement that will make history, like the nuclear free campaign in the 1980’s.

New Showroom 128 Tahunanui Drive Murray says heating your home with a fire is still the most efficient and cost effective way to do it and with the use of a transfer system, dry’s and heats a home like no other heating system. “You can crank up a good fire and heat your whole home and really, it’s a cheap way of heating.” Over the past decade the fire industry has gone under a lot of change, with heatpumps getting a lot of airtime as a good alternative to fires. But Murray says you can’t beat a good fire. “A wood fire does 20 plus years if it’s maintained and looked after. We are finding that people are only getting eight years from heatpumps. So you are outlaying more than a cost of a fire to replace a heatpump. If you look at it you will get lifetime out of fires.” A new council by law means that once a house owner chooses to fit a heatpump the house will actually lose the right to have a woodfire says Murray. “As soon as you choose an alternative heat source you can’t go back to your woodfire option. We would encourage people to put a fire in first.” In fact fire manufactures are now producing fires with very little pollution. One fire, the Pyro classic, has a rating of 0.3, which means for every kilogram of wood you burn it produces point three grams of ash. If someone was to know the benefits of fires it would be Murray. He has worked in the industry since he was a teenager and previously owned a fire shop in Gore and sold it when it “got too busy,

Parts is a big part of our business,” he says. P&M can also organize servicing for your fire. Fires should be checked every year for insurance purposes and P&M can come around to sort out the sweeping and other maintenance of your fire. If the fire causes a house fire the insurers look at opting out of it. So if you are thinking of how to best heat your home give Murray and his team at P&M Fireplaces a call and discuss how a fire could be the best option for you. They are the fire experts and can give you the best advice, based on years of experience and knowhow. You can give them a call on 548 5742 or visit their brand new showroom on Tahunanui Dr. Murray’s top tips for efficient heating: * Put wood in your fire long ways rather than sideways, so it funnels better * Get your chimney swept at least once a year to eliminate the risk of a chimney fire. * Ensure fire wood is dry. Damp wood will result in a poor performing fire and smokey glass. Moisture meters are available in store for $55 * Ensure bricks, baffle and door seal are in place to get the best of your fire.

LETTERS
TO THE EDITOR
I refer to your article in tonight’s Nelson Weekly (June 7), I think Nelson most definitely has a dog problem with a minority of dogs and dog owners. My brother-inlaw is a postie and has been attacked by a dog – it’s just not reported in the media. I am a regular jogger and almost every run I encounter a dog jumping up on me, trying to nip ankles, sniffing my feet, running after me or similar – and it’s not ok! Nelson does have a dog problem – but it’s more of a problem with a minority of owners because there are a lot of decent dogs and owners as well. Diane Chandler. Thanks for your article on dogs running free in Nelson. I completely support Liam O’Donnell’s comments. I have two children and have also experienced issues with dogs in ‘no dog’ areas and the lack of use of a leash in other areas. I have real concerns about these issues for public safety and agree that it’s only a matter of time before there is a serious incident in Nelson. Well done for running the story! Andrea Lee. We have lived in Nelson for just four years and so far we do not consider that Nelson has a serious dog problem. But there are some areas of concern, and one of these is the Wakapuaka cemetery which is very popular with dog owners but far too many do not keep their animals on a lead as required by law. Just a few days ago we saw a large dog on the loose chasing the sheep in the cemetery, and the dog’s owners were completely ignoring the scenario. We have not seen too many of the ‘dangerous’ dog breeds around Nelson which is a blessing, but I do feel for people like Liam O’Donnell who fears for the safety of his children in areas where dogs are banned. Perhaps an unannounced blitz by council animal control staff in places like this would solve the problem. Alison Kelso. My partner and I were returning from a walk along Parkers Rd on Sunday night when from behind some bushes a huge black and white American pitbull came
charging at us on the footpath it had me bailed up against a car and I thought it was going to be intensive care for me. I felt totally defenseless, the owner came running out yelling at us to stay, still trust me I wasn’t moving! A local father says it is just a matter of time before Nelson becomes home to a horrific dog attack as owners defy by-laws and allow dogs to roam free in banned areas. Liam O’Donnell says he is now tempted to carry a knife to protect his two young children in case of an attack because areas where dogs are banned are full of owners flouting the rules.

should perhaps walk elsewhere as they should expect to encounter free running dogs in both these areas. Marianne Palmer. Yes, I agree with Liam O’Donnell’s concerns on dogs. We have one pre-schooler and one school age child. We have experienced many incidents of uncontrolled dogs jumping up at or onto our children. As a consequence, our children are very wary of dogs. We try and teach our children not to be scared and always to seek the permission of the owner if they wish to pat a dog that looks friendly. We feel we are respectful to dog owners, but don’t always get treated back with respect. The most difficult aspect of the flouting of rules banning dogs for me, takes place up the Maitai in summertime. We have learnt to swim at a particular swimming hole, because no dogs are allowed. However we find many dogs are there anyway, often being ignored by the owners as they jump up on people, run over swimming towels and gear and just make a nuisance of themselves. I have even had one dog jump on my back while I was swimming, pushing me under the water! It completely spoils the enjoyment of a summertime swim. I would like to see enforcement officers stationed at no dogs swimming holes in the summertime on random days, so they can start issuing tickets. Marion James. I totally agree that more needs to be done with dog owners who flaunt the law. I walk along the Railway Reserve most mornings of the week, and there are always owners with a dog, who don’t have a leash on them. I also walk our dog on a leash, and these dogs rush over and are quite intimidating. The owners say “don’t worry, the dog is very friendly”. How do I really know? Maybe Stephen needs to monitor the Railway Reserve at different times of the day. I have also mentioned to the dog owners that dogs are supposed to be on a leash in the reserve, but the next day just the same happens. Too many children at 7.30am onwards are walking or riding their bikes to school, and I would certainly hate to see anyone mauled by an unleashed dog. Juanita Friend.

Door to national league open for Nelson Phillip Rollo The path appears clear for Nelson football to make a long-awaited return to the country’s top domestic competition with New Zealand Football’s chief executive confirming to Nelson Weekly that he is ready and waiting for a formal bid from Nelson. The region’s top coach, John Slotemaker, has been calling for the region’s clubs to unite and enter a team in the national league – now dubbed the ASB Premiership. But his wish seems closer than expected with NZF chief Grant Kavanagh saying he would “love” to see Nelson playing at national league level for the first time since the early 90’s. Since that statement, Nelson Weekly has confirmed that the region’s two most successful clubs – Nelson Suburbs and Richmond Athletic – would support the franchise and former players would “jump at the chance” to return and play for a new Nelson side. Trafalgar Park could also be used as its home base during the summer competition. Nelson Bays Football currently operates under the Mainland Football Federation banner, home to ASB Premiership side Canterbury United. Nelson’s top club, Nelson Suburbs, sits second in the Mainland Premier League. But its coach, John Slotemaker, president Jason Lavington, along with Richmond Athletic president Stu Reid, says the current system does not work, with the region’s best players having to leave Nelson to further their careers, despite bumper crowd numbers, top facilities and outstanding results at youth level in the region. A serious “stand alone” offer could act as a replacement for a number of clubs struggling in “certain areas,” or preferably to expand the current eight-team league to nine, according to Grant. “It’s

I can’t see any downside,” he says. But one obvious downside at going any further with the proposal is the cost. Entry fee in to the competition is $55,000 and Grant estimates teams spend $140,000 a season, with most teams attracting a fair amount of community trust funding as well as sponsorship. But attracting gate sales to help with that figure shouldn’t be too much of a problem. A record 2500 spectators watched January’s ASB Premiership clash between Canterbury United and Team Wellington at Trafalgar Park, the highest attendance in the country last season. Nelson last had a team in the national league when Nelson United played for 15 years, from the 1970s. John has advocated the need for a higher level for his players to aspire to, something the region does not currently offer. Players need to travel to Christchurch three or four times a week for training if they are selected for Canterbury United or its ASB National Youth League team, the latter featuring five players from Nelson Suburbs. One of the top players to come out of
Nelson in recent years, Mike White, says he would love to represent Nelson in the ASB Premiership. Mike, who went to both Waimea College and Nayland College, is a former New Zealand A representative and a member of the now defunct New Zealand Knights ALeague franchise. “I would be the first to ring the club and make myself available to represent the region again. I would jump at the chance to come back and play at home.” New Zealand under 17 star shot-stopper Coey Turipa confirmed he would also return home if Nelson gained entry in to the league. Coey was in the Canterbury United squad last season alongside Nayland College striker Gagame Feni. Richmond Athletic’s and former England professional Ben Wright says he would also be keen to join the team. John says he could name “20 to 30” local players currently capable of stepping up to national league level. Nelson Mayor Aldo Miccio, who is also on the board of Nelson Bays Football, says he would “help facilitate” Nelson’s inclusion as much as he could. “I don’t think any football person in Nelson would object to it. It’s a pathway for our kids.”
RUGBY: Nelson College first XV lost its first game of the Press Cup season to heavyweights St Bede’s College 34-20, after leading with just ten minutes left on the clock. The two previously unbeaten teams had entered the match with the northern section bragging rights on the line. Nelson College now shifts in to the top half of the league, with Nayland College playing off for the bottom eight, after an injury ravaged 83-0 loss to Marlborough Boys College. HOCKEY: Rewa Hockey Club, one of the oldest clubs in the region, is hosting a fundraising quiz night this Saturday for new playing equipment and uniforms which are “well past their used by date”. The quiz night is being held at the Nelson Hockey Pavilion at Saxton Field from 7pm. Teams wanting to register should call Diana on 547 3821. FOOTBALL: Nelson Suburbs second XI picked up an important 5-1 victory over Richmond Athletic’s reserve side on Saturday. Goals to Dylan Wells, Luke Toynbee, former Mainland Premier League player Hamish Lewis, Greg Chitty and Danny Walsh put the side five points clear at the top of the table.

Two from two for Stoke NBS in netball’s Tasman Trophy Stoke NBS had the perfect start to the Tasman Trophy when they recorded two wins in the first weekend of play held at Saxton Stadium. Stoke NBS and Harlequins Scaffolding could not be separated when they were tied at 24 all at the major break. Stoke NBS hit the ground running, to fire on all cylinders in the third quarter to punish the Marlborough team 21–11. The bar was lifted further with an 18–7 final stanza to take the game convincingly at 62–42. Wing defence, Anna Allen had her best game to date when she gained several deflections to gain valuable ball while Emily Stalker at goal defence toiled for the entirety. Christta Burrows put in a solid performance at centre while Abbie Cook took on a hefty work load with 38 centre pass receives. Shooters; Steph Bothwell, Jemma Taikato and Abbie returned commendable statistics with a combined 82 per cent average. Stoke NBS recorded a 64–54 win over SMOG Stainless Steel on Day two. Although they had a tentative first quarter, down 15–16, they found another gear in the second and third stanza to register a 19–14 and 17–11 advantage. SMOG came back strongly in the final quarter when they hammered in seven unanswered goals.

But Joe is back, bringing with him his great-tasting Fish and Chips. Joe returned to Nelson after Christmas and was keen to keep doing
However, Stoke NBS rose to the occasion to draw the final quarter 13–13. Goal shoot, Steph, was the top performer returning a 91 per cent average, where she received an abundance of off loads from her goal attack, Abbie Cook, and superb ball placement from her feeders Christta Burrows and Michaela Matenga. Fill-in Dayna Whiting, back in Nelson from studies at Otago University, proved to be a handy acquisition as she was able to take the court as a replacement for Jemma Taikato and Anna Allen, who are both now sporting moon boots after ankle injuries. Dayna pulled in six well timed intercepts in the SMOG game while Abbie’s work on defence was rewarded with three classy intercepts. Coach, Priyani de Silva-Currie was very happy with her charges, who are raising the bar at each outing. The defence is gelling nicely, testament to some hard work at training, while the attack line is displaying stability with shooters, Abbie and Steph developing into a profitable partnership. It was also great getting the opportunity of changing the mid court with the swap between Christta and Michalea and beneficial to be tested against the different opposition of the Marlborough teams, she says. Richmond Wakatu also had two wins over the weekend.

They were the sole Accesman Stoke senior side to pick up a win, defeating Waimea Old Boys Women 22-8 at Ngawhatu on Saturday. Stoke were keen to avenge its loss from two weeks ago against WOB and started the game at a frantic pace, controlling possession deep inside opposition territory. Stoke’s pressure paid off with a try to number eight Gemma Hallet and utility forward Abbie Cederman crossing a short time later. Sallyanne Archibald and Catrina Nicholas combined well at first and second fiveeighths, delivering quality ball to their outsides, particularly Stephy Omundsen who easily turned in the performance of her season so far. Stoke crossed twice more in the second half to seal the well deserved victory. Accesman Stoke division one met its match in the form of Wakatu Marist on Saturday.
