Trade Me scam dupes Nelson user Phillip Rollo A Nelson Trade Me user was the target of the latest online scam by fraudsters attempting to sell credit card details. Stoke physiotherapist Diane Chandler had her home email address hacked by a “phishing email” disguising itself as a “Trade Me security advisor” and now wants to warn others to watch out for the bogus site. Phishing, also called “carding” or “brand spoofin”, is fishing for ID or credit card details through email, the internet and sometimes telephone. The email, saying Diane’s Trade Me account was suspended and requesting her to change her personal information – which included typing in her credit card details, due to a “a recent change in your personal information” – came just days after securing a new visa and a week after a bogus account with no feedback or sales history

had won one of Diane’s auctions but failed to reply. The email linked Diane to a website called “www. members.com/trademe” where she had to verify her email address, account password and credit card details. But there was one glaring mistake in the link, despite very “legit” logos and banners. “It was dot com, Trade Me is dot co dot nz,” says Diane. “It came up with a Trade Me site, then it asked for my credit card details and I thought ‘no, I don’t need to put that in TradeMe’.” That’s when I got suspicious. It looked really genuine.” Diane visited the real Trade Me website and logged in. There were no problems, or links suggesting her account had been suspended. She immediately changed her password and called a help desk at Trade Me. It cost Diane $1.99, including GST, per minute for

‘We’re so humbled and proud’ Jason Richard’s parents show support for racing fundraiser

Andrew Board Jason Richards doesn’t play a very good victim. But the amount of support the Aussie V8 supercar driver has attracted – from every top Formula One driver to three local mates – has humbled him and the entire family, say his parents. Thirty five year-old Jason, a born and

bred Nelsonian, is fighting an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer that “gets worse every day”. His medical expenses are skyrocketing as he scrambles to find a cure amongst a list of experimental drugs, one injection he had cost $2000 alone. Fundraisers are being held around the globe, including donations from Formula One and V8 Supercar driv-

ers, to this Saturday’s fundraiser held at ProKarts in Tahunanui. The fundraiser is being organised by Jason’s childhood friend Tony Dyer, along with mates Brendan Gridley and Nick Fowler and includes a Bathurst style race on the ProKarts track, with live commentary. The day will also feature
