Phillip Rollo A Nelson music festival is having huge spinoffs for the local economy, with millions of dollars coming from out-of-town concert goers. In 2009, the Adam Chamber Music Festival generated a net spend of $1.5 million, according to a Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency report, and this year’s festival is expected to be even bigger, with audience sizes thirty percent larger, says festival manager Roger Lloyd. The Adam Chamber music festival is a bi-annual festival featuring 30 concerts in some of the region’s most intimate venues. People come from all over the globe ...last time we had to attend the festival with specta- one sold out concert tors coming as far in the cathedral, this as Denmark for time we had four. the 11th year of the concert. Roger – Roger Lloyd. says the attraction of coming to Nelson in the height of summer, in addition to the music, is a huge draw-card for overseas tourists and it was a big difference in this years crowd-figures. “The most notable difference is last time we had one sold out concert in the cathedral, this time we had four sold out concerts in the cathedral,” says Roger. The EDA is conducting a survey for a repeat report this year and Roger expects those figures to be “better than last time.” Local restaurants saw numbers peak to Christmas figures during the festival. While boutique stores echoed increased sales.

Bride again ‘TIS THE SEASON: Nelson bride Michelle Harwood trying her dress on after getting married last August. Michelle is entering the Bride of the Year competition this year. Photo: Andrew Board. The greatest day of your life can be an expensive exercise, especially when that several thousand dollar dress doesn’t get worn again. But dozens of new brides are refusing to allow their wedding dress to spend decades hanging in a dark closet and restoring them to their full glory for the Bride of the Year awards. In the middle of wedding season Michelle Harwood, of Stoke, says she is itching to get back in her dress and is “definitely” entering into the competition this June.
“You spend a lot of money on a dress that you are only going to wear once so when I heard about the competition I was keen straight away,” she says. The Bride of the Year competition is hosted by a volunteer committee, with all proceeds from the show donated to Nelson Hospice. Organiser Heather Harley says the competition took a year off in 2010 as it did not want to put too much pressure on its sponsors in a tough financial year. “The Bride of the Year is back again, I’ve had brides asking me if it was
and yes it definitely is,” says Heather. The popular event will be held on 11 June, at the Hope Community Church and is open to all brides who were married in Nelson during the last two years. “The recent brides love getting into their dress again and people love seeing it. It is a great event,” she says. In 2009 the event raised $25,000 for the Nelson Region Hospice, which is funded solely by sponsorship and support from the community. Any enquires about entering can be directed to Heather on 545 1644.
