Phillip Rollo A Nelson music festival is having huge spinoffs for the local economy, with millions of dollars coming from out-of-town concert goers. In 2009, the Adam Chamber Music Festival generated a net spend of $1.5 million, according to a Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency report, and this year’s festival is expected to be even bigger, with audience sizes thirty percent larger, says festival manager Roger Lloyd. The Adam Chamber music festival is a bi-annual festival featuring 30 concerts in some of the region’s most intimate venues. People come from all over the globe ...last time we had to attend the festival with specta- one sold out concert tors coming as far in the cathedral, this as Denmark for time we had four. the 11th year of the concert. Roger – Roger Lloyd. says the attraction of coming to Nelson in the height of summer, in addition to the music, is a huge draw-card for overseas tourists and it was a big difference in this years crowd-figures. “The most notable difference is last time we had one sold out concert in the cathedral, this time we had four sold out concerts in the cathedral,” says Roger. The EDA is conducting a survey for a repeat report this year and Roger expects those figures to be “better than last time.” Local restaurants saw numbers peak to Christmas figures during the festival. While boutique stores echoed increased sales.

Bride again ‘TIS THE SEASON: Nelson bride Michelle Harwood trying her dress on after getting married last August. Michelle is entering the Bride of the Year competition this year. Photo: Andrew Board. The greatest day of your life can be an expensive exercise, especially when that several thousand dollar dress doesn’t get worn again. But dozens of new brides are refusing to allow their wedding dress to spend decades hanging in a dark closet and restoring them to their full glory for the Bride of the Year awards. In the middle of wedding season Michelle Harwood, of Stoke, says she is itching to get back in her dress and is “definitely” entering into the competition this June.

“You spend a lot of money on a dress that you are only going to wear once so when I heard about the competition I was keen straight away,” she says. The Bride of the Year competition is hosted by a volunteer committee, with all proceeds from the show donated to Nelson Hospice. Organiser Heather Harley says the competition took a year off in 2010 as it did not want to put too much pressure on its sponsors in a tough financial year. “The Bride of the Year is back again, I’ve had brides asking me if it was

and yes it definitely is,” says Heather. The popular event will be held on 11 June, at the Hope Community Church and is open to all brides who were married in Nelson during the last two years. “The recent brides love getting into their dress again and people love seeing it. It is a great event,” she says. In 2009 the event raised $25,000 for the Nelson Region Hospice, which is funded solely by sponsorship and support from the community. Any enquires about entering can be directed to Heather on 545 1644.

Victory School students have been given the rare opportunity to speak live with astronauts at the International Space Station. Using amateur radio, 20 students will put pre-prepared questions to astronauts next Friday, an honour bestowed on few schools. Victory Primary School successfully applied through the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station programme to schedule contact with the inorbit crew. School Board of Trustees chair, Helen Watson says it is a very exciting opportunity for the students. The space station travels at 27,000kph and orbits the earth sixteen times in a 24-hour period, so the maximum time it will be in range of Nelson is 10 minutes. Among the questions

students have prepared are: Can you look out the window right now and see our school? Do you have telescopes? Is space cold? How do you clean yourself? Can plants grow in space? Victory School volunteer Scott Smithline, who instigated the project, says the contact is scheduled for late morning on Friday 25 February, at the school hall. However, Scott says a variety of events may alter or postpone it. The whole school will be in attendance, plus invited guests. Scott says this is the final mission for Discovery, as NASA begins shifting resources toward the Moon and Mars. “If one child is inspired by a few minutes of dialogue with an astronaut, this READY FOR OUTER SPACE: Victory School students that will have whole exercise will have been a their questions answered by astronauts from left; Poppy Bowler, 5, brilliant success.” Biak Tha, 11, Phoebe Moss, 10, and Ngun Tin Tial.

o2b Healthy Children...‘Current C’ Chewberries an innovative choice! Children need to take Vitamin C daily because the body does not store Vitamin C. Pediatricians recommend that children should consume at least 30-45 mg of Vitamin C every day. Vitamin C is vitally important for maintaining a healthy immune system. Among the many benefits of Vitamin C for children is that it acts as a powerful anti-oxidant as well as anti-inflammatory agent that prevents oxygenbased damage to cells from occurring.

Blackcurrants are very rich in many key phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, and essential fatty acids. In particular, Blackcurrants are renowned for their high content of Vitamin C and anthocyanins. o2b Currant C Chewberries are an innovative and unique Nelson made blend of great tasting pure NZ Blackcurrants and Vitamin C, made in a convenient size chewable tablet form, especially for children. Contains no: Wheat, gluten, corn, yeast, milk or preservatives.

SMOKY STEVE: Steve Steele and his 84 year-old granddad Jack smoke it up on the burn out pad at the Classic Car Show in Annesbrook over the weekend. Insert: Steve and Jack after the burn out. Photos: Phillip Rollo. Phillip Rollo Roaring engines and plenty of smoke thrilled the crowd at the 2011 Nelson Car Show. The burnout competition highlighted another thunderous year for the show with thousands of spectators coming through the gates. Show crew member Steve Steele took his 84 year-old grandfather Jack out in the burnout competition. Jack maned the passenger seat as Steve snaked his ute around the rubber covered cement. The ride was a birthday present for Jack who says he wasn’t nervous at all. “It was good fun,” he smiled.

But when it came to the final five drivers, it was obvious who was going to win. Last year’s winner Marc Cederman was back in his Holden Kingswood ute and he flooded the venue with smoke, sometimes making it hard to see he was even there. Marc took out the finals for the second year in a row and says the secret to success is just what the performance looks and sounds like. His performance featured all of the above. Marc had spent all the week leading up to the show making sure his ute was ready. “We didn’t think it was going to hold together mate. We’ve been

The body for the ute was a birthday present from his dad and he has been using his parents farm throughout the year for practice. There was plenty to see and do at the show with radio controlled stockcars, a V8 simulator, live music and millions of dollars worth of cars packed in to the field next to Mitre 10 Mega. Steve says the burnout competition was again the crowd favourite for the record crowd. Watch out for Marc in 2012 as he looks for his three-peat.

Nelson nurses celebrate 50th reunion For 20-odd nurses the three years they spent in Franklin Hall at Nelson Hospital proved to be such an influence on their lives that they flew from all over the country to help celebrate 50 years since they started at the hospital. Early 1961, 37 young women, mostly from Nelson, checked into Franklin Hall for three years of nurse training. Not all of them made it to the end but three of the Nelson nurses who finished, and continued to nurse throughout their career, say it set them up for life. “We didn’t know what we were coming into, we had all just finished school so we were a little nervous as well as excited,” says Juanita Friend, of Stoke. Numbers dwindled as some found nursing wasn’t for them and others failed to pass the necessary exams but the core stuck together and were qualified nurses after three and a half years. Bedside care made up the majority of the job 50 years ago with patient care the focus. But it wasn’t the only role, nurses were also expected to sweep

the floors, empty the rubbish bins and clean the rooms, including scrubbing the bedpans. While the rules were strict at the hall, Jan Bonner says not all the young nurses played by all the rules. “I remember having a bed next to the fire escape and being woken at some ungodly hour to let girls in that had been out partying.” Curfew was extended to 10pm once a week for nurses to go watch a movie and 12.45am one night a week to go to a dance. Each year two intakes were accepted at Nelson Hospital. Last weekend the January 1961 intake gathered again at the hospital for a reunion. They were given a “nostalgic tour” of Franklin Hall, as it is now, and the hospital. Of the three Nelson nurses spoken to, all went on to be career nurses at the hospital or as a district nurse and Plunket nurse. They say the biggest change in nursing since they started was a decline in bedside care but an increase in technology.

Fifty years of memories for one family Fifty years, three generations, one school. Nayland Primary School has played a big role in the life of Jillian Hodgkinson and her family. Jillian was a foundation student at Nayland Primary when it opened its doors 50 years ago. Her daughter Nicky also attended and the school as a student and currently works there as a teacher and Nicky’s son was also a pupil at Nayland. Jillian says when she started at Nayland there was only a two buildings, a swimming pool and a dental clinic. Now the school has 400 pupils and is gearing up to celebrate its 50th birthday with a reunion weekend in April. Jillian was around nine when she started at Nayland and says she re-

members very small classrooms. “There was just a handful of us students and my first teacher was Mr Daly, who I saw again at the 40th reunion but he has passed away now.” Nicky started as a new entrant at Nayland in 1979 with Mary Balkin her first teacher; Nicky and Mary are now colleagues at the school. “It was kind of weird returning as a teacher but my son also went through Nayland and I worked part time as a kapa haka teacher so I got to ease my way into it,” says Nicky. “The staff has changed over the years but it still has that same culture and I just love it here.” The reunion is planned for April 8-9, FAMILY TIES: Nayland Primary School teacher Nicky Mason with her mum Jillian Hodgkinfor registration information visit son. World Cup on show in Nelson Rugby’s ultimate prizes was in Nelson on Saturday, the first stop in a nation-wide tour. The William Webb Ellis trophy, Bledisoe Cup, Tri-nations trophy, Hillary Shield, Women’s world cup and under 20 world cup were all on display at Trafalgar Park and hundreds turned up to inspect the holy grails of the rugby world. The day also doubled as a junior registration day with kid’s activities happening throughout the day, aided by members of the Tasman Mako wider training squad. The main attraction though was the William Webb Ellis trophy with people getting their photo taken with it. The tour is organised by the New Zealand Rugby Union and will visit each rugby province in the country over the next few months, before the start of the Rugby World MATES: Timi Sauira of Nelson with Ruggerbees Will and Rugger at the Cup in September. junior registration day at Trafalgar Park.

diary

• A quiet week for the port with four container vessels, one log ship loaded, and five large fishing vessels arriving, departing or shifting around the port. The Cape Breton came off the slipway and her refit continues. • A few local issues warrant mention: Set Nets – There have been instances where set nets have been put out in boating lanes or frequent boating /swimming areas. The latest case was a net close in to the Tahunanui Steps swimming area. I ask the owners to be very careful about where they set these nets. If they are in an area frequented by or reserved for swimmers or small craft I will consider them a “danger to navigation” and they will be removed. • Paddle Boards - these are increasing in popularity and it’s great to see so many taking part. However they are a vessel under 6m (usually) and do require the carriage of a life jacket. The proposed new bylaws will make the wearing of the lifejacket (or floatation device) compulsory. I have seen many paddle boarders a long way from shore – please keep in mind how quickly the weather can change, and the tidal influence. It may be very difficult to paddle back. • Speed is still an issue for many. Please obey the rule – no more than 5 knots in the marina area, within 200m of the shore, within 200m of a vessel displaying the dive flag, or within 50m of another vessel or swimmers.

RIDE FOR HOPE: Richmond Mall centre manager David Hill is looking forward to the Ride for Hope this weekend and encourages all motorbike riders and their pillions to head along. Photo: Teresa Hattan.

Charity rides kicks into gear Make sure to air out those leathers and give your chrome a good clean in preparation for the Ride for Hope this weekend. The ride from Nelson to Motueka and back to Hope this Saturday is all in the name of charity. All funds raised on the day will go to the Richmond Mall Foundation, which supports locals and local community groups. “It’s important to note that the owners of the mall will match the funds raised dollar for dollar,” says David.

Entry is just $10 for either rider or pillion passenger and includes a registration badge, spit roast, soft drink and entry into the prize draw. All participants are to meet at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson at 9am for registration, with the ride starting at 10am. “No matter what type of motorcycle you ride – this event is an opportunity to get out and about for a great ride and the chance to win some great stuff,” says David. The prize draw and spit roast will be at the Hope Domain from 12.30pm.

Stoke woman Susan Tonks, above, thought her $30 headphones were a good buy, but she had no idea how good it was until last week. Susan bought the Phillips headphones from Smiths City in Nelson. The electronics company was running a nationwide competition to win a car so Susan filled in an entry form and was picked as the national winner. She was flown to Wellington last week to pick up her prize and says she is rapt to win. “I just couldn’t believe it, the guy called me and when he told me I just jumped around and told everyone I know.” Susan says she was in the store to buy a home theatre system and only bought the headphones as a last minute impulse. Smiths City manager Rhys Jaddon says he was happy to have a national winner come from Nelson and his store. “It’s great news and it’s a great wee car too, she’s done well out of her headphones.

vital funds to keep more Kiwi hearts beating. “Home is where the heart is, after all.” Lottery number 68 has a total prize pool worth close to half a million dollars, with other prizes including overseas holidays for two to Thailand and Melbourne. allows the design of beams, columns and floor systems that are the equivalent of steel and concrete. Innovative timber design promotes a sustainable approach to construction making use of timber as a renewable resource, grown and manufactured within a 100km radius of Nelson. A series of design innovations contribute to the sustainable design approach employed. Devices including mixed mode heating and cooling, heat exchangers, thermal mass, high insulation levels, use of natural daylight, assisted ventilation and solar water heating are used to reduce energy consumption. At completion energy usage will be monitored by the University of Canterbury for comparison with more traditionally constructed buildings. Irving Smith Jack Architects have designed the building to highlight its timber construction. Timber components remain visible, showcasing the innovative design approach and allowing this building to act as an exemplar for both the design and building industries. “Having a building that is state-of-the-art for New Zealand is going to be an integral and memorable part of gaining their qualifications for our arts and media students,” says NMIT CEO Tony Gray. This building will be equipped with up to date digital gear necessary for contemporary arts and media practices including music editing and composition, video, graphic design, image manipulation, publication design and production, animation, internet design and more. It will also include workshops with a range of technical equipment and specific facilities for handling dif-

Manager Project director Steve Kelso says the building is in a class of its own and his company has been very proud to work on develop it. “Arrow was formed developed in 1984 from a couple of directors who like challenges and that culture has stuck, we like projects with objectives outside the industry norm. A project like this is hugely important to our economy and this building will win be submitted for some significant national awards, which is the success of which will be great kudos for NMIT, the local companies and Nelson itself.” All up there were over 50 subcontractors and suppliers firms working together on this project. The head carpentry and concrete contractors of the project were Nelson based Gibbons Construction, a family owned company who have been involved in the construction industry for over 60 years and managing director Scott Gibbons says the timber building is closed aligned with the company’s objectives for timber buildings. “We became aware of the project through our networks in the timber industry, and we were keen to be involved in the supply of timber and construction of this innovative building.”. The all important LVL components of the building were supplied by local firm Nelson Pine Industries, and manufactured by Hunter Laminates, and installed extremely professionally by Christchurch firm Paremata Construction. The building will be officially opened next month.

Dear Editor, Thank you for advertising our recent Bumper Summer Booksale in your Community Notices. We also appreciated the explanatory article in your paper and the eye-catching photo by Andrew Board. The publicity meant the sale was well attended over its one and a half days. The Friends of the Nelson Library group made over $3,000 which will be used to help fund library projects. Regards, Jeannie Woodhouse Chairperson, Friends of the Nelson Library. Sir, It is disappointing that after Nelson council has spent one million plus investigating specifications for a performing arts centre, council wants to spend yet more money without giving any proper criteria for assessment. The Local Government Act requires councils to do a cost/ benefit analysis when proposing such projects. The costs, and benefits, to ratepayers must be presented to the public. Only then can a legitimate referendum on the issue be put to the ratepayers who will be paying the costs. It is time for council to stop wasting money on more expensive “investigations.” Put the proper criteria before the public, then hold a referendum in which only ratepayers --who will bear the costs--can vote. Yours sincerely, Dan McGuire, Nelson. Dear Sir, I should like to respond to Rosalina McCarthys letter to the editor dated the 8 February 2011. I refute her claim that I appear to ignore official documentation and reports from that period. I did research and study articles from the Nelson Examiner of 1863, Nelson Evening Mail 1963 and read the Report on the Inquiry of the Mates Death. In June 2007 I interviewed Mr Dennis Richardson (resident of Delaware Bay and read the Mail article of 1963 written by his wife, Lesley (now deceased) of the rescue. Having gleaned this evidence I then spoke with Kaumatua and Kuia of the Ngati Koata Iwi and was referred to the Wakatu Marae where the Ngati Koata Iwi have a poupou which depicts their version of the rescue. I agree with Rosalina – the rescue was a joint ef-

fort. Where we disagree is that she states Huria Matenga had a brother Ropata Matenga. Ngati Koata history states that it was Hohapeta Te Kahupuku who retrieved the lead line from the “Delaware”. This version is agrees with the comments made by Lesley Richardson in her newspaper article. “But no matter how correctly recorded at the time, history often becomes distorted down through the years, and this is one such case – for Huria has often been credited with catching the lifeline thrown from the stricken vessel …….full honours for this heroic deed must go to the man who has simply been recorded as Ropata or Robert. His full name was Hohapeta Te Kahupuku (known affectionately to the Pakeha Settlers as Big Bob), a member of Ngati Koata Tribe and a man of incredible strength. When Able Seaman Bill Morgan succeeded in throwing out the ships lead line, it was Hohapeta who swam out and secured this rope which was then hauled ashore,” Nelson Evening Mail, 3 Sept 1983 I have never attempted to demean the memory of Huria Matenga but rather raise the profile of one so brave and written out of history – Hohapeta Te Kahupuku. I am disappointed that being a researcher that Rosalina McCarthy subscribes to and continues to perpetuate the colonial myth rather than have a more investigative approach to this story. I never said that I was trying to rewrite history. Alan Turley used those words in his comments when he responded to my first letter to the editor. I am unaware of Roselina making contact with either the Ngati Koata Trust Board or the Ngati Koata Kaumatua Council to interview any iwi members to verify or disprove their Iwi history. Ngati Koata however believe that Hohapeta Te Kahupuku deserves a place in history as he swam the raging sea and obtained the lead line which lead to the ultimate rescue of the crew and passengers. Allen Hippolite, Researcher Ngati Koata Trust. Father and son ready to face off at Blokes Day Out Eddie Paurini has already thrown in the towel, and he couldn’t be happier. Eddie and his 13 year-old son Cullen will be facing off against each other in this year’s Port Nelson Blokes Day Out for the first time and Eddie says he is glad to see his son take part and doesn’t fancy his chances at keeping up with him. “Those kids, man, they just go. You’re at the starting line with them and then they disappear. I think I’ll see him at the finish line.” Eddie has completed the Blokes

Day Out twice before but this will be the first time with his son also in the field. Cullen says he is looking forward to taking on his old man but admits to some nerves before the start of the race. “I’m just going to do what I do and try not to worry about the other people racing.” He says the run will be the hardest leg for him with swimming his best. Eddie and Cullen are some of the hundreds that take part in the triathlon each year. Organiser Averil West says the race was started after blokes complained that there wasn’t a race for them at the Women’s triathlon each year. “So we thought ‘oh well, we’d better get one going for them’.” The Blokes Day Out is a favourite for first timers and people who would like to give triathlon a go. Averil says the course is designed so men can complete the event in their own time. “A lot of men seem to be a bit worried that they will come last, but I don’t think that is something to worry about in this race. We have men that walk it, it’s just about getting out there and having a go,” she says. The race is a 5km run or 3km walk, 14km cycle and a 133 yard swim (four lengths of Riverside Pool). Nelson South cleans up at age group champs

The Marist 7s rugby team after winning the bowl trophy at the Marist Federation’s New Zealand Community Trust 7 aside rugby competition held in Wellington on Friday last weekend. Involving 16 teams entering from a total of 28 member clubs from around the country, Nelson’s Marist club lost its first two games in pool play but responded well beating a North Island selection, Wests of Hokitika and Hutt Valley Marist before beating Tukapa of Taranaki 27-14 in the Bowl final. Stand out players were Rudolf Meredith with experience, Yane Teinakore and his good foot work, Mat Leary and his wicked step and also a mention to Tom Heaphy for a good effort in the weekend.

International stars come to ride Nelson Some of the world’s top trial riders will be in the region this weekend for the second annual NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial. The sports tourism event will involve participation from national and international riders and is held at 88 Valley in Wakefield each February. Helping to put Tasman District on the map internationally, this rider-friendly event is all about fun and participation, a recipe that has been working very successfully for over 35 years in Japan, the home of the Ihatove event. Guest riders at the NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial this year will be UK Trials legend Mick Andrews; chief development rider of Yamaha and past all Japan champion, Haruo Kimura; along with the founder of the Japanese Ihatove event, Yasuo Manzawa. Trials is about technical skill, navigating tricky tracks and obstacles. Nelson is home to several of New Zealands top riders, including brothers Peter and Nick Oliver. The event kicks off on Saturday, 19 February, with the Nonstop Trial, where the object is to ride through obstacles without putting your feet down and without stopping,

followed in the afternoon by a ‘Kickstart Scott’ type time trial. Again a series of obstacles are ridden, but this time one rider at a time with the added incentive of completing the loop in the fastest time with the least points lost. Both of these events should be a lot of fun for both riders and spectators, say orgainsers. There will be an evening at Club Waimea on Saturday from approx 7pm to 8pm with the opportunity to meet Mick Andrews, Haruo Kimura, Yasuo Manzawa and our local Team Xtreme riders, last seen at the Richmond A&P Show in November. There will also be some footage of Saturday’s riding. On Sunday is the main NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial, which is ridden during the course of the day across a large area of farmland between the Parkes Punawai Farm and Hunts Highfield Farm, both at 88 Valley, Wakefield. Again spectators will have an opportunity to see riders as they return from two separate loops and negotiate sec-

tions at the main start/finish area. For more information about the NZ Ihatove Adventure Trial and Team Xtreme visit www.nonstopadventure. co.nz/newzealandihatovetrials.php or phone Stephen at 03 5451053 The event will be signposted from the Wakefield 88 Valley turnoff, with best spectator viewing between 10.00 am and 3.00 pm both days. As this event is held on private farmland you will need to bring your own food and water. Sorry no dogs allowed. Gold coin donation and parking on site.

Located on a secluded island just 10 minutes from Richmond is the region’s most picturesque golf course. But not only is Greenacres Golf Course picturesque, it is also one of the most testing courses available in Nelson. The golf club can be found on Best Island and is just a short drive from most townships in the Nelson region. The club has been located here for over 50 years. President and manager of the club Graham Sherlock believes the course and club rooms offer a relaxing and quiet place to enjoy a round of golf. “We emphasise that it’s very peaceful and quiet here,” he says.
