Hopgood’s wins top award Andrew Board
Hopgoods was the major winner of the Nelson Hospitality Awards last night, taking home the gong for the region’s top restaurant. The ceremony for the New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards 2012
was held at Grand Mecure Monaco Monday night with hundreds from within the industry turning up to support the region’s best. Hopgoods restaurant held onto the award it picked up two years ago with Richmond café Ambrosia picking up the Café of the Year title. The Sprig & Fern Milton St won
the award for best bar. Tahunanui’s Kraut’s was another big winner, picking up three awards for Outstanding Ethnic Cuisine, Bar Person of the Year and Waiter/Maitre’d of the Year. Mark Mehalski of the Jellyfish Café and Bar in Mapua won the head chef award while, as announced last week, Nik Dallabosca
from the Mint Dining Room won the Up and Coming Chef of the Year award. Those two awards were selected by industry experts with many others selected via thousands of voting forms from readers of Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and the

Hearts were racing as more than 350 women looped through Stoke for Mother’s Day. The Jennian Homes Mother’s Day 5k is an annual fundraiser for the Heart Foundation, a women only event to raise funds and awareness for the charity. The event is now in its fourth year, with many women showing ongoing support. “The really neat thing was most women participated in their red t-shirts from previous years,” says Simon Collett of Jennian Homes. “It just goes to show how much Nelson women enjoy this event and look forward to it each year. It’s fantastic.” The aim of the event was to get women around the country active, caring for their health and enjoying each other’s company on Mother’s Day, says Simon. Women of all ages and fitness levels joined in, some competing while others enjoyed the leisurely walk with friends, mothers and daughters. “It’s a great day out. I think we’ll do it again next year,” says Nikki Newman, who walked the 5km with her mother and daughter.

“The climate and the variety. Everyone that comes here can do whatever they want to try - sports; arts, whatever. It’s great.”
“The fact that you’re right next to the hills and the sea, so you can go walking and kayaking and all sorts of great things. It has something for everyone.”
“I like the climate and all the activities I can do coming out of town; all the other areas I’m not used to. All the outlying areas.”

The cart keeping Nelson tidy is a pretty tidy piece of equipment itself. The rubbish cart used by the Kahurangi Employment Trust was recently upgraded, thanks to money donated by the Nelson Civic Trust. The cart is used five days a week for a couple of hours, picking up rubbish and cleaning rubbish bins in Nelson CBD. It is funded by Nelson City Council through the Tidy Town project. Roger Thorn of the Kahurangi Trust says the cart has been getting plenty of great feedback and is much easier to use.
Slip clean-up ‘years away’ The clean-up from last December’s floods could still take another two years, says the man in charge of the project. Alec Louverdis, of Nelson City Council, says physical work on the $7.5 million recovery project will start in a matter of weeks after a lengthy but “vital” planning period. He says roads such as Poynters Cres, above Rocks Rd, and the Cable Bay Rd could take years because of the difficulty. “Our first priority is to protect lives and we will not open roads that are unsafe for peo-
ple to be on. Unfortunately, in the case of Poynters Cres, it does inconvenience some people but we will make sure it is done properly.” Meanwhile the effort of the response, immediately after the rain, has been calculated with man hours and it comes to 8200 hours in council time alone. That does not include time spent on the response by the dozens of contractors, building inspectors, geotechs, police, fire-fighters and volunteers. Alec admitted that the council’s communi-
cations with affected home owners after the flood “could have been better” but he feels it is on top of it now and they have had good feedback from residents affected. “There is still some frustration though and I understand that. We are working as fast as we can but in saying that we also need to make sure we do it right. We don’t want a band-aid solution, we want long term solutions.” The council has set aside $3million in the current financial year for the recovery and is proposing $4.5million in next year’s plan.

No liquor store for Coupland's site news BRIEF in A neighbouring school has welcomed news that a liquor store is not moving into the Coupland’s Bakery site in Stoke. Rumours had been circulating in the area that Foodstuffs, who recently bought the Raeward Fresh brand, would be bringing one of its liquor stores, Henry’s, to the region. However, Foodstuffs South Island has stated that those rumours are completely untrue. Foodstuffs South Island general manager of property and retail
Roger Davidson says that while the company is looking for opportunities to bring “better shopping experiences” to the Nelson region and is “continually assessing sites” in the region for potential new stores, there are no plans for any new stores in the near future. The news was pleasing for Garin College deputy principal Denis Moriaty. “It’s not good modelling to have them anywhere near a school,” says Denis. “I know that it’s happened up north and there are
issues to do with youth and underage drinking. To have it visible and a neighbour of any school is undesirable.” Coupland’s Bakery is situated on the corner of Champion Rd and Salisbury Rd next to Raeward Fresh. The bakery’s lease is up this year and is likely to move closer to the Richmond CBD. Coupland’s regional manager Brent Hutchinson says the reason behind the move is partly because of uncertainty around the future of Raeward Fresh.
Eye on you The new security system at Port Nelson is "foolproof ", giving the security team unprecedented watching power throughout the port. Forty-nine new high definition digital cameras are in the process of being installed all around the port to give a comprehensive view and heightened security. All aspects of the previous system are being replaced, as it had started to fail after 12 years of use, says Dave Duncan, harbour master at Port Nelson. “The new system is foolproof,” says Dave. “The old system had blind spots but the new cameras miss nothing.” The system, which has a half-million dollar budget, covers the area from the land access to the ports. They boast much better clarity and far greater zoom, as well as instant replay ability to enable easier identification, providing better protection and security for staff and vessels within the port, says Dave. COUNCIL RESHUFFLE: Councillors have been shuffled around portfolios as the current administration marks the halfway point in its term. The move about sees a loss of portfolios for Ian Barker, Rachel Reese and Paul Matheson, announced this morning. BROCKIE TO PHOENIX: Nelson football player Jeremy Brockie yesterday signed to play for the Wellington Phoenix next season. Jeremy played for Newcastle last season and had "multiple offers" on the table but had earlier told Nelson Weekly he wanted to play for a team that would best help his chances in the national team. The Phoenix is coached by All Whites head coach Ricki Herbert. Jeremy, who was married last month, has signed on for three years. A NIGHT WITH A KNIGHT: Internationally renowned actor Sir Ian McKellen will grace the stage at the Theatre Royal at 2pm and again at 7.30pm this Sunday as part of his national tour, Ian McKellen on Stage. Audience involvement is encouraged and some may even get the chance to join the legend on stage. The show will include excerpts from his roles in Shakespeare’s and Tolkien’s works. All proceeds go towards rebuilding the Isaac Theatre Royal in Christchurch. The night show is sold out but tickets to the matinee are still on sale.

A busy week at Fashion Island, with the incredibly successful high tea to raise donations for NZ Breast Cancer Trust, and then a weekend full of busy stores with families celebrating their mums, cafes bustling and stores stocked up on gift ideas. The store I would like to introduce to you today is Living and Giving. I had a great time choosing serviettes and high tea platters for last Tuesday, from dainty and girlie, to contemporary and edgy - the choice of platters, glassware and gift ideas makes selecting these items easy. I also love how the girls gift wrap, so beautiful. I get a great deal of pleasure baking and keeping the tins filled with delights, although between my teenagers and all their friends, this is a constant job, but I do love browsing around Living and Giving’s selection of bowls, baking tins and even the pretty cupcake papers. Bubbling casseroles and tagines in your ovens for warm winter meals- the Le Creuset range is stunning, also Jamie Olivers and Scanpan, to name a few. Spend some time in this store, browsing at cookbooks, enticing your cooking imagination. I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

Rockquest picks finalists The stage is set for a new high school band to be crowned the winner of the Nelson Smokefree rockquest final. Following Friday night’s heats at the Theatre Royal, 12 acts have made it through to Saturday’s final. Last year’s SFRQ national champions The Peasants had won the Nelson final for the past two years and despite some of the members still being enrolled at Garin College, they have chosen not to enter under a new format and will instead perform as the guest band at a handful of the South Island regional finals. The Peasants’ success has undoubtedly encouraged a new wave of talent, with this year’s regional heats being the tightest yet. Among this year’s finalists will be death core rockers from Motueka, solo musicians, all girl pop punk bands, last year’s runners up, a seven-piece group from three different schools, bands with members as young as 12 years old and one even features the younger sibling from the Peasants. Officially, the 2012 Nelson finalists are Paper City, Fire Without Permit, Hey August, Marley Richards, Buried In Blood, New Vinyl, Midnight’s Sun, Nearly Headless Nikk, The Black Spots, The Sound Engineers, Damn You Laurie and Speaking in Silence. The Nelson final is at the Theatre Royal this Saturday, starting at 7pm. Quiz brings students together Classroom rules went out the window as more than 160 students participated in the inaugural Academic Quiz last Wednesday. The event was proposed by members of the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) committee as part of a ministry initiative to increase communication and collaboration amongst teachers throughout the region. It was also a chance to bring together students who are enthusiastic about learning, “proving it’s cool to be clever,” says Caroline Hoar, coordinator of the Gifted Education Centre.
The topics were given in advance, with categories including Flight of the Conchords and Famous New Zealanders. The teens had the chance to study as much or as little as they wanted, but the purpose of night was to have fun, says Caroline. Spot prizes and Richmond Mall vouchers gave the students an incentive to try their best. Students aged 12 to 18 were involved, hailing from seven schools in the district. “They’re all really excited;” says Caroline. “It was all organised by students, they’ve done an amazing job.”

US Flat Stanley visits Nelson
A classroom in the United States is hoping its own “Flat Stanley” will leave Nelson with a wealth of information and thanks to one Nelsonian their chances are looking pretty good. Lori Parker says her nephew in Rhode Island sent her a Flat Stanley and she has been rushing around Nelson documenting his visit to collect information to send back to his classroom. Lori approached Nelson Weekly about asking Nelsonians why they live in the city to send back to the students. “We chose to live here because of the people, the weather, and the amazing opportunities to explore the outdoors as well as being blessed with great jobs but we wanted to find out why other people live here as well,” says Lori. The Flat Stanley Project aims to connect children, students or classroom with other parts of the world by sending out “flat” visitors, created by the children. Kids then talk about, track, and write about their flat character’s journey and adventures. Lori’s Flat Stanley will be making its way back to the US next week.

Students ready for Stage Challenge Taste of Egypt comes to Richmond
Come in and meet the friendly staff Rohit and Preet, plus owners Saeed Awad and Dianne Lineham at Taste of Egypt in Sundial Square. For fast, fresh and healthy food, you can’t go past Taste of Egypt. Their mouth watering souvlaki and kebabs are made fresh when you order, from the flavourful sauces that Saeed makes from his own recipes, to the fresh salads made daily in store, to the halal, chicken, lamb or beef filling that is cooked up while you wait. Vegetarians can enjoy the feta cheese or green salad options, or Egyptian falafel made by Saeed, which has become very popular with customers of their Christchurch store and now in Richmond as well. Saeed takes a trip to Egypt every two years to refresh his skills and knowledge of Egyptian flavours. Saeed and Dianne expanded their popular business to Richmond, while Saeed’s son takes care of the
Christchurch store, after they lost their home in the quake. Now they are in Dianne’s home town of Richmond and have brought with them their four years of experience running the store, so that even within the first week of being open they were receiving repeat customers and glowing recommendations. Taste of Egypt is marked by the red store front topped with two camels in Sundial Square on Croucher St. They are open 11am to late, 7 days, making the perfect lunch option or quick, healthy and delicious dinner plus Saeed’s own baklava and Turkish delight. Your order will be complete within 10 minutes, but for those in a hurry, phone ordering is available on 544 0203. Come enjoy authentic, memorable flavours at Taste of Egypt.

Josie Krishnasamy Today is a big day for a combined group of Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College students; Stage Challenge is tonight. They started planning and organising last year, with literally hundreds of hours spent practising and going over the routines. To get each single move right has meant rehearsals every day after school and at the weekends trying to nail the dance steps to the millimetre. This year the whole performance is student run with a committee behind it involving 10 people. In the cast there are just under 80 people but including the behind the scenes crew and teachers the number jumps to 110. It’s a phenomenal team effort. The team is hoping this year to knock Nayland and Waimea off the podium and show everyone that they can repeat their winning ways.

They have won before but quite some time ago. Seren Powell-Jones, one of the choreographers for the event, says getting every little detail right, from lighting to costumes, is important but overall it’s the originality of the performance and having that x-factor that will stun the judges. “I’m so excited for everything we have been working for but I’m also nervous for it to happen. You’re always going to want it to be perfect with every single detail but you have to bring yourself back down to earth and realize these guys are just students. So no matter what, I will always be proud,” says Seren. The students and teachers of Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College truly believe they can win the Stage Challenge 2012 and if it was for commitment, dedication and sheer hard work then they certainly would have a shot.

Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: My daughter plans to study at university in Wellington next year. We have found out that she can’t get a student allowance because of our income. How much student loan can she expect each week and how much allowance should we give her? A: Her student loan will cover fees, student related costs and she could borrow up to $171.51 per week towards living costs. If her Hall of Residence cost is $300 per week, she will need $128.59 from another source to cover this cost. Write up a budget with your daughter, which includes all the expected weekly costs such as Hall of Residence cost, transport, phone and personal cash. Hopefully she has some savings and will find part-time work to go towards this cost (There is no limit on how much she can earn). You may wish to contribute the rest. Planning ahead will help her feel confident about her finances so that she can concentrate on her studies. We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Submissions close tomorrow Submissions to the Nelson City Council’s draft Long Term Plan close tomorrow. At the end of last week 262 submissions had been received, both in writing and via the council’s website. Mayor Aldo Miccio says he has been really pleased with the number of people who have taken
the chance to come and discuss the plan with councillors at the community conversation opportunities. “We’d love to see more of that feedback coming in via the submission process. We want to know what you support, what you’re not so keen on and the reasons why you feel that way.”
Each week two photos from the museum’s “glass plate” collection will run in Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly to try to find out more about them. Right: Miss Joseph. sions – for example when the rules were changed to allow much bigger yachts into her class. [From 1905 and] for the next 85 years she was active as a settler’s launch in the Marlborough Sounds and later as a fishing boat out of Nelson and Motueka. Brought back to Auckland, she was fully restored by Harold Kidd and Keith Pine and relaunched on the 121st anniversary of her original launch date, at Devonport Yacht Club, the closest practical point to the site of Robert Logan’s yard. Jessie Logan is the yacht that made Robert Logan’s reputation for design skills and excellence of workmanship.” Jack says she was a great boat to look at and it was moored in Nelson Haven outside the Nelson Yacht Club for years. “It was also used as a fishing boat, which wasn’t making the most of it. It was very quick.”
Ninty-one year old Tahunanui man Jack Stent grew up in Nelson and remembers sailing around Nelson Haven as a teenager, so when he saw a photo of a boat from the museum’s glass plate collection he got in touch. “I remember that boat, it’s a beautiful boat and it was very quick. It’s name is Jessie Logan.” Logan Bros were boat builders based in Auckland and Jack reckons the boat that featured in Nelson Weekly last week from the Nelson Provincial Museum’s Glass Plate Collection was the same one he remembers from almost 80 years ago. He has a book on Logan boats and believes the boat photographed may still be racing. “A man who lived on Tosswill Rd used it as a playhouse for his children for years then someone from Auckland came down and offered him some money for it and restored it. I think it’s still racing in Auckland and still winning.” The photograph that featured in the Weekly was taken by F N Jones at the Nelson Regatta in 1916. If it is the Jessie Logan it does have quite a history. The following is from the Classic Yacht Association of New Zealand’s website: “She was launched on 24th January 1880 to take part in the Auckland Anniversary Regatta Second Class race. Robert Logan Snr designed her and owned her during her first season. With the Press Cup season opening game against Burnside well behind us now our next Challenge is to keep the momentum going, with more strong performances. Pre-season fixtures have gone well with victories over Waitaki Boys High School and Timaru Boys High School on the Easter tour and coaches Bill Liddell and Grant Hunt are optimistic about the season ahead. The Press Cup will of course throw up some tough challenges but the team is very well prepared having followed a rigorous fitness programme that has been running since before Christmas, under the guidance of Jeremy McIlroy. The boys are highly motivated to succeed and are well aware of the responsibilities as first fifteen players at

Nelson College. For senior players like Captain Mitchell Drummond, recently named in the New Zealand Under 19 touch team, and Kerehama Barrett, named in the Under 20 Maori training squad, this campaign will bring to an end school rugby playing days. For the up and coming players like Mitchell Hunt (New Zealand under 17 team and the New Zealand under 17 touch team), it will be an opportunity to further develop experience at the highest standard of schoolboy rugby in New Zealand. The target is to try to win the Press Cup – anything else would not be appropriate. However, the management team is aware of the players need to make progress and to uphold the spirit of the

game. Nelson College holds a special place in New Zealand rugby, having held the first game of rugby in New Zealand, and proudly being at the forefront of rugby in the country. This year’s squad realise that when they run out on College Main and the other grounds throughout the South Island, they not only carry the responsibility of supporting their team mates, but the added responsibility of upholding everything the current 1130 students, teachers, past players, old boys and sponsors hold dear. With this level of support, we know they will do us all proud. We wish them the best of luck. The squad thank their sponsors for making their focus on winning the Press Cup, that little bit easier.

SPORT Nelson teams progress in Chatham Cup Phillip Rollo The party invitations said to meet at the Wakefield Recreation Ground, but FC Nelson was the only team celebrating on Saturday, sealing a 2-0 victory in the first round of the ASB Chatham Cup. The beauty of England’s FA Cup is pitting lower league minnows against some of the world’s powerhouses. While New Zealand doesn’t have the same footballing riches as the UK, a team featuring the bulk of the Nelson Pine Industries division one leaders FC Nelson Sprig & Fern squaring off against a group of battlers from the Nelson Pine Industries division two was the biggest gulf you’d see in these parts of the world. But any difference on paper was purely that, as a vocal Wakefield side sniffed an upset in New Zealand’s oldest football competition. It was the first time in the Chatham Cup’s 85 year history that a team from Wakefield was entered. FC Nelson, combining the best of FC Nelson Sprig & Fern and FC Nelson Fuji Xerox, were in just their second year together as a merged club. Team Wellington striker Henry Fa’arado sat out this match, unable to play any of the knockout football until he has played at least twice in the league. But it was his partner in crime, Solomon Island Under-23 international Moffat Kilifa that
opened the scoring in the first half. Wakefield played well in patches, defended their hearts out, but didn’t offer much on attack. FC Nelson, on the other hand, squandered a handful of chances, the majority of them created by pacy winger Davi Maciel. Wakefield entered the Chatham Cup to prove it could match it with the sides in the division above, and during the entire 90 minutes it did exactly that. Even when Neil Connell scored FC Nelson’s second, buoyed on by a bumper crowd Wakefield created two key chances that could have seen it peg level late in the second half. Sean Parkes saw his second half penalty attempt saved; a chance that could have killed off the match. But it was the rock-solid defence from Ant Sonnemann and Sam Miller, combined with some key saves from shot stopper Jan Kovac that sealed qualification into the next round. FC Nelson coach Steve Bignall will now get his second chance in as many years to unlock the defence of AMI Nelson Suburbs in the second round, after the Mainland Premier League crushed eightman Richmond Athletic 8-0 at Saxton Field on Sunday in the round’s other local derby. The next round will be held on Queen’s Birthday Weekend. The venue is yet to be announced.

Classic encounter as Stoke draws with Wanderers
A pulsating division two clash between two teams that will be aiming for silverware at the end of the season ended in spectacular fashion. With time running out Stoke midfielder Reuben Young weaved his way around three Wanderers players to score a try
and tie the game at 25 points each. The Greenmedows crowd held its collective breath as skipper and kicker Jacob Curtis stepped up to hand the defending champions their first defeat of the season but he couldn’t convert and left the game tied at fulltime.

Stoke’s other try scorers were Jason Hylkema, Aaron Dempster and Andrew Shepherd. The tie meant Stoke hit the trifecta over the weekend; a tie, a win and a loss as the women’s team beat Huia and the division one team lost to Waitohi in the Tasman Trophy.
Stoke coach Gary Alsop says Craig Groome and Tevita Koloamatangi had great games while Steve Kerr and Ben Douglas were again rock solid in the second row. “Unwanted injuries haven’t really done us any favours with consistency, but week in week out we demonstrate a resilient attitude which looks very positive for the remainder of the season.”

Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club According to the latest reports the snapper and kingfish are in good numbers at D’urville. Kingfish are starting to turn up at Stephens Passage and snapper from 3- 5 kilos are in abundance all the way from Crosilles’ to Stephens. Kahawai have also been sighted in very large schools from the Boulder Bank to D’urville. Not much else is happening in Tasman Bay though as the fish have predominately headed to deeper, greener pastures northwards. As the fishing grounds are getting further away it is probably a good time to bring up the subject of boat
Troy Dando with a 40lb D'urville Kingfish caught last week. safety. Many of us would regard ourselves as good skippers probably having owned a boat for years and consider that your experience would get you through most situations at sea, or you may be a novice that needs to learn some basic facts about being on the water. Either way you could always improve your knowledge of safety on the water. Last month at the DBFC, Brian and Hillary Tear came and talked to us about the Coastguard Boating Education Courses that they run

locally. A lot of people who own a boat will never have had any basic education regarding boating and even those of you that have could always up skill. The most popular course is the Day Skippers course and as a fishing club we would highly recommend it to everyone, as on the water this information could be a life saver. It is an introductory course for all members of the family or crew, including those new to boating. It applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches, powerboats, PWCs, sea kayaks, and waka. Even if, like me, you have been boating for years, you will be surprised at how much you don’t actually know and what you thought was right, is in fact wrong. Included in the course modules are basic boat handling, navigation, rules and regulations, emergencies and knot tying. If you think back since owning your boat you will have incidences where you have been involved in an accident, Island mishap or near miss of some kind, which may have been potentially avoided, had you been informed with some basic boating education. Far too many kiwis are becoming statistics by not knowing or doing the basic things right when out boating. By attending a course you can make sure you, your family and friends are a lot safer on the water. Other courses that might be interest are the boatmaster, VHF marine radio and outboard/inboard engine maintenance. For more info contact Brian or Hilary Tear on 547 3513 or boatear@slingshot.co.nz.
