Swim into summer
Lifeguards at Nayland Pools take a break from gearing up for the start of the season by taking a jump in one of the pools. They are from left; Kirsty Russ, Jimi-Zara Slotemaker, Jess Cornish and Dave McKenzie. Photo: Andrew Board. Nayland Pool’s opened its doors for the summer season on Saturday, welcoming more than 300 swimmers to the outdoor complex in Stoke. Manager Dave McKenzie was stoked with the turn out, saying it was one of
the biggest on opening day for a number of years. The three-pool complex will now be open until mid-March 2011, and would be used mainly for schools until holidays begin in December, says Dave.
“It’s a great complex we have here and it’s great to see so many turn out for opening day. It really kicks the summer off on a good note to get in for that first outside swim of the season.” The pools are open every weekend.

Broadgreen tackles exchange with Chch school Phillip Rollo Eighty eight Broadgreen Intermediate School students headed down the Lewis Pass yesterday for its annual exchange with Christchurch South Intermediate School. The trip was originally planned
for term three, but after the earthquake the teachers decided it was a better option moving it to the later date. Students will take part in a variety of sports and cultural activities, as well as performing a concert in front of the other school. “It’s about participation and getting
involved. Sharing what we have with them,” says teacher Michelle Andrews. Other activities include trips to Science Alive and QEII pool. Each student will be billeted throughout the week in Christchurch. “It is a big thing for a lot of them because a lot of them have never done something like that before. And it’s not something that actually happens that often anymore.” Michelle says all the students will enjoy the experience. “Ever yone talks about it, everyone who’s been, and says it’s real cool.”

Letters to the editor Sir, Just prior to the Council elections a local newspaper ran a poll on whether we should go ahead with a Performing Arts Centre. A very small majority still favoured this project but would they have been so supportive if they knew the proposal put to the public late last year meant taking $5 million annually direct from the ratepayers pockets to fund an insolvent project? In fact that $5m included a projected annual operating loss of $500,000. $5 million lost to the retail sector in these difficult economic times would be criminal. However, new Mayor Miccio has signalled referendum for such major expenditure. I look forward to the public being given the full facts, and they decide whether $30 million should be spent on a loss making venture. Private enterprise would never consider such an investment. Council seems to think the ratepayers should. Errol Millar, Nelson.
Sir, Nelson council plan change 25.2, currently notified and open for submissions until Dec.3, will have the effect of removing much of the protection residents currently have against excessive noise. This change is part of planned changes to Nelson’s district plan which will allow much higher levels of noise throughout the city. Residents can make objections to the proposed change, by going to council’s website under ‘consultations,’ and downloading the submission form. Otherwise, a form can be obtained from council in paper form. Dan McGuire, Nelson. Letters to the editor, to be shared with Nelson Weekly readers, are encouraged. If you would like to have your say on any story or news item in this paper or any other issue please email your letters to editorial@nelsonweekly. co.nz. Please keep letters to 150 words – Editor.

Cross campaign highlights ‘horrendous’ family violence rate “Standing over 40 crosses that represent 40 people killed due to domestic violence is a sad sight” says detective sergeant Ian Langridge, of Nelson. And he hopes seeing the crosses will help raise awareness on domestic violence. Police, along with Te Rito, are setting up 40 crosses in Nelson and Richmond over the next two weeks in an effort to reinforce the current television campaign, It’s OK. In 2009 there were 40 deaths by murder or manslaughter that were associated to family violence in New Zealand, 13 of those were children and 15 women. “It’s a statistic we don’t want to have but that’s the reality, 50 percent of our murder and manslaughter stats are family violence-based,” says Ian. On November 25, White Ribbon Day, city leaders will sign a ribbon that will be connected with other ribbons from around New Zealand and hung at Starship Hospital in Auckland. Also on the day the crosses will be step up at the Church Steps. White Ribbon Day was founded by a group of Candaian men after a massacre of womFamily safety team member Constable Kathy Pomfrett, Detective Sergeant Ian Langridge and Te Rito en. The movement has since spread around family violence coordinator Gayle Helm with the crosses campaign which will be at this weekend’s A the world and it’s goal is to raise awareness about preventing violence against women & P Show and at the Church steps in Nelson. Since 2004, when police starting capturing statistics on family violence, its stats has increased in Nelson Bays by 72 percent. “It’s a significant increase. It is due to increased reporting, better response by police and better initiatives with places like Te Rito,” says Ian. Nelson Tasman Te Rito network is made up of 58 Nelson member agencies and organisations who have agreed to collaborate together to prevent Family Violence in Nelson. Family violence coordinator for Nelson and Tasman, Gayle Helm says the more awareness around the issue the better. “Helping solve family violence is about community involvement, it’s not just left to the police any more. It’s about everybody making a stand, saying it’s our responsibility to change our behavior, our drinking culture and how we resolve conflict.” The crosses will be step up at the A&P Show this weekend where Te Rito will also be giving information about family violence. Ian says hopefully the local push will help get the number of deaths down. “Forty deaths is 40 too many, especially because 13 of them are children, it’s something that is just not acceptable.”
Swiss ambassador to speak at Fairfield House The Swiss ambassador to New Zealand, Dr Marion WeicheltKrupski will be in Nelson next week, speaking at a Real Democracy NZ event. She will be joined by Auckland mayoral candidate and businessman Colin Craig, speaking on

Tasty school gala a winner with kids Enner Glynn students will be looking forward to having a new playground at its school after its biennial gala raised more than $16,000 towards the project. Candy floss for the kids, hot pork on a spit and white bait patties for the adults; the Enner Glynn school gala on Sunday was full of tasty treats and activities for the whole family. Horse rides and the horizontal bungy provided a fun-filled day with plenty of smiles around the school says its principal Issac Day. “It was a wonderful community event. Absolutely brilliant.”

Success of dunes will grow beach Tahunanui Beach will get bigger as its dunes spread, says Nelson City Council. Work to restore the dunes at Tahunanui Beach is proving so successful Nelson City Council, with the help of the Kahurangi Employment Trust, is again extending the protective fences around the dune restoration area. This is the third expansion of this area since the 174-metre-long seawall was built in 2005 and a planting programme was started to try to halt the severe erosion that had been happening. Environmental reserves supervisor Martin Cleland says as the dunes grow, so to will the beach. “It seems a bit funny but that is how it works and these dunes are coming along very nicely.” The seawall reduces the impact of the waves as they near the beach and serves as a culvert to carry stormwater away from the top of the beach, allowing dunes to re-establish through drifting dry sand. This innovative structure has proved its worth over recent years as it has helped to preserve the iconic beach and also reduce the ongoing costs associated with the erosion. The planting programme has been supported over the years by sponsorship from Honda New Zealand and through Lotteries NZ funding and council has worked with many dedicated volunteers to get the plants in the ground.

You know the old saying: “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Well if ever you needed proof, visit the corner of Hardy and Tasman St’s each Monday. Resident Sue Bevan puts out her “free box” of unused possessions which people are welcome to sift through for free. Sue says she loves opshopping and as the new stuff comes in the old goes out the front door, quite literally. “The box is a bi-product of my passion for op shopping; my bad buys are again recycled on my fence. But I can’t take all the credit, friends and
neighbours also contribute.” Sue has been placing the box on the outside of her home for about a year now. “People are wonderful and I’ve often been left stuff in return. I’ve had jars of marmalade, my roses trimmed and even the odd coin tossed over the fence.” She says she will continue to leave the box out and encourages other to do the same. “I’ve got far too many things and it’s liberating to recycle some of it and it has created a real sense of community. Wouldn’t it be great if we all did it even once a year on a given day”

Clifton Terrace School student Caleb Eason, 7, with Sirocco the kākāpō at his school last week. Sirocco is the most famous of the 122 kākāpō left.
Celebrity bird visits Nelson school A world famous kākāpō made a fleeting visit to Clifton Terrace School last week. Sirocco shot to fame last year after his inappropriate actions during the BBC’s Last Chance to See series. He popped into Cliffton Terrace after a student’s father, Daryl Eason, picked up the parrot from Nelson Airport. Daryl works on the Kākāpō Recovery Programme for Department of Conservation and was taking Sirocco to his new home on Maud Island, in the Marlborough Sounds, from Codfish Island. “He is moving to Maud Island because he is going to be used a lot more for advocacy in the future and Maud Island is significantly more accessible to come and go to events and various locations around the country.”
Sirocco was only at the school for half an hour but Daryl says it was enough to get the kids excited. “Their faces gave a pretty good idea they were very excited and thrilled to see it all happen. I think the sheer size of the bird and what he looks like surprised them.” The kākāpō’s appearance with British media personality Stephen Fry on Last Chance to See featured an incident where Sirocco made an unusual mating attempt with presenter Mark Carwadine. The quirky footage had more than half a million hits on YouTube, and sent social networking sites buzzing with comments from amused observers, reported newzealand.com. Currently there are only 122 kākāpō left in New Zealand.

Students test gymnastics skill Nelson Gymnastics are calling its annual primary schools tournament a massive success after more than 400 pupils took part. The Primary School Gymnastics Competition, hosted by Nelson Gymnastics, was run over two days last week and featured 430 kids from 15 Nelson and Tasman schools. Jenna Robertson, of Nelson Gymnastics, says the competition was all about fun. “We always take a look at the results and pick out the ones that are reasonably high up and
trial them for our competitive programme, but generally it’s all about fun and participation and giving it a go. Quite often they can’t do a skill but in here the judges do help them and often the kids complete a skill for the first time ever, so that’s really cool. And it’s a bit of a buzz for them, using the proper equipment with the spring floor.” Pupils work on their routine for weeks leading up to the event, often taught their moves during lunch breaks by teachers.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• The Russian fishing vessels prepare to leave; three container vessels; a car carrier; a log ship; several large fishing vessels; a passenger charter vessel; a fertiliser delivery and the Monte Stello all made for a busy port and reasonable berth congestion this week. • Out on the water we spoke to a few people however on the whole I must report an excellent safety awareness in the boating public. • A new Approach Beacon has been placed outside the cut for incoming and outgoing traffic to be aware of. This beacon marks the South Western edge of the 5m contour line that follows the boulder bank north east. It is an offence to secure your vessel to any navigation aid - please don’t. • A Hydro graphic Survey vessel has been operating around the port and marina in order to confirm the dredging programme has been successful and to enable us to gazette the correct depths of the channels. • Something I would like you to be aware of as I will be policing this: A lifejacket or PFD (personal floatation device) must be carried on all vessels, a suitable one for each person on board. If your vessel is less than 6m they must be worn unless the skipper specifically directs otherwise. Skippers, you take a risk of prosecution should something untoward happen whilst out there. If a PFD is not worn or carried you can be fined. Be safe and “if in doubt , don’t go out”, always watch the weather. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

On Sunday The Nelson Building Society Supreme Ridden Pony and Industrial Coating Specialists Supreme Ridden Hack will be awarded. The Clydesdale section will be competing on both days of the show and is bound to be a crowd favourite. LIVE MUSIC “Recommended by Your Mom” and “Peasants of Eden” will be gracing the main music stage on both days of the show between 10am and 3pm. The Regiment Pipe Band will be featuring on both days and the Nelson Brass Band will be playing on Sunday afternoon. MITRE 10 MEGA BEE EXPO For the second year running the live bee display will feature at the show and live working bees (see over for more info). ANIMAL NURSERY The animal nursery is one of the most popular locations at the Show, and this year is centrally located in the main ring. TERRIER RACING 1.45pm Sunday will see the annual “running of the Terriers”, so bring your terrier dog (young or old) and enter on the day. (See the Moutere Inn advert for details.)

Richard Till
Serving up riveting TV, and an insatiable host, we present the one and only, Richard Till. Richard who made his way into our living rooms last year as the opinionated, unpretentious and likeable chef in Kiwi Kitchen is now a New Zealand household name. Richard is at ease in front of a crowd and certainly knows how to draw one. Since debuting on television, Richard has branched out and utilised some of his many skills to write books and then toured the country with the second series of his top rating TV show. He’s so popular in fact, that Foodtown and Countdown have chosen him as their pin up boy. He cracked the food market by doing comedy cooking shows in Arts Festivals in Wellington and ca-
tered for visiting music tours such as U2, Simply Red and Stevie Wonder. A real entrepreneur, Richard understands business and has also owned his own restaurants. Which is not half bad for a kiwi bloke who grew up in Christchurch and Dunedin building and painting sets! Richard loves going out to small country communities and his broad appeal guarantees he’ll be in demand for a very long time. A dash of comedy, a bucket load of charm and a well recognised face with a commanding presence should ensure his cook off against mayor Richard Kempthorne and the late bloomer Miles Drewery from “Miles of Food” will be one not to miss. It won’t be an easy feed for Richard Till!

Mitre 10 MEGA Bee Expo The Bee Exhibition first became a section at the Nelson Agricultural & Pastoral Show in 2009. In that first year, it won the’ Largest Trade Exhibit’ and the prestigious ‘Best Overall Trade Exhibit’. Since the Bee Exhibition, there has been a notable increase in interest from the bee fraternity and general public for an Apiculture Section to become a permanent fixture at the Nelson A & P Show. As a result, the ‘Trees for Bees’ theme from 2009 was so successful, it will now be incorporated into the exhibit every year. The exhibition consists of beehive frames enclosed in glass; a gazebo with a small beehive; extensive native tree display; display boards; two 52” television screens; and large display boards, together with bee by-products offered for sale. The glass incased beehive frames showcase
President’s Welcome
We continue a great tradition of bringing country to town, an opportunity for rural folk to showcase the best of their livestock, produce and talents. We have a wonderful lineup of entertainment this year – the Amazing Drumming Monkeys from Australia, and classic kiwi chef Richard Till, plus we have all the fun favorites, such as wood chopping, shearing, equestrian competition, and a vast array of trade displays. I would like to thank our sponsors, particularly Golden Edge Nelson Pine Industries for their ongoing support which we sincerely appreciate, as well as all other category sponsors that generously support the Nelson A&P Association. I would also like to thank our management team and all our volunteer committee members for the work they have down towards our Annual Show. I urge you all to put some time aside to attend one of our longest running and truly traditional events at the historic Richmond Park Showgrounds. A small nucleus beehive, in the security of the gazebo, is opened hourly for viewing. Volunteers are invited to enter the gazebo to experience the bees first hand. Rotating informative videos can be viewed on the two large television screens, along with comprehensive posters. Buying a sound system for your home should be a pleasurable experience says Peter Strand of Strawberry Sound, and by dealing with an expert you can guarantee it will be. Technology is always changing, so how do you future proof yourself without paying for features that you will never use? Ask Peter, he is an expert at home sound systems and finding the best equipment to play your favourite music on. He is a specialist dealer who is not on commission or is being encouraged to move certain products. Specifications have become very unreliable due to the “imaginative” and exaggerated claims made by most manufactures, says Peter. So buying a prepackage system from one importer or chain store is no guarantee that the units in the system are well matched. “I have seen and heard some shockers,” he says. “At Strawberry Sound we pride ourselves on selling you the right system first time, saving you money and disappointment.” New Zealand owned, based in the South Island and staffed by experienced locals, who have real passion and commitment. Walk through the doors of Strawberry Sound and you will get advice from a true expert, making sure your sound is perfect for your home.

Nelson wins sevens crown
IN BRIEF SporTS AwArDS Mitchell Drummond received the Morrison Cup for best allround athlete at the Nelson College sports prize giving. Mitchell was MVP for the South Island rugby championship where he captained Nelson Bays U-16 to South Island glory, a member of the 1st XV rugby team, selected for the Nelson Senior cricket team, as well as playing touch and basketball for the college. One of Mitchell’s closest teammates, Fletcher Smith, took home the Wood Cup for best all-round athlete under 16. Fletcher was a starter for the 1st XV, a key member of the Nelson Bays U16 team, and captain of the Senior A touch team. Fletcher also had outstanding results in regional athletics. fooTbAll Nelson’s Billy Scott starred in Canterbury United’s National Youth League victory over Otago United with a hat-trick in the 7-1 rout. Alex Ridsdale, also of Nelson, also got on the score sheet with the entire Nelson contingent playing the full 90 minutes. Meanwhile former Nelson Suburbs Bogan player Gagame Feni made the most of his starting debut for Canterbury United with a well taken goal in the 15th minute against YoungHeart Manawatu in the National League. Gagame’s effort gave the home side a 1-0 win. CriCkET Nelson’s representative cricket team fought back for a draw with Canterbury Country at Saxton Field on Sunday. Batting first the visitors declared at 484/3 and Nelson struggled in responce being seven down at tea on the second day. But a tenth wicket stand between Brendan Hodgson (43) and Marty King (37) saw Nelson hold on for a draw. The match was Nelson’s first Hawke Cup game this season.

Stoke/Nayland battle without rep stars Stoke/Nayland are well behind at stumps on day one of the two-day Car Company Nelson Cricket match against Waimea College. After losing Ben Alder and Jacob Beleski early, Alex Coles and Ryan Yates tried to steer the home side back on track. Alex showed encouraging play on the way to 32 runs before being bowled. Many of Stoke/Nayland’s side were unavalible due to representative duties with Nelson. Nathan Todd saved its blushes with a solid 52 not out late in the innings, before being all out for just 175. It took just 41 overs for Waimea to surpass Stoke/Nayland’s total, and went on to finish the day 217/4, thanks to a century from Stoke/Nayland batsman Alex Coles on the way to scoring 32 runs at Marsden Rec on Saturday. Swing into golf open day Tasman golf development manager Chris Pugh is running an open day for kids at Nelson and Greenacres Golf Courses. Photo: Andrew Board. “How do kids get into golf if you don’t have a family member or friend involved?” It is a question Tasman golf development manager Chris Pugh has heard before, and now he has an answer. This Sunday the Nelson Golf Club is hosting a family day where people can come along and have a go at golf under the eye of Chris and other golf coaches for free. The initiative is being run throughout the country by New Zealand Golf and aims to get kids into the sport which Chris says has some wrong perceptions.
“We want to clear up some misconceptions about golf – that it’s for old boring blokes and that’s expensive because for kids it’s not. Many clubs have equipment they can use just to see if they want to play the game and the average yearly sub for a junior golfer is about $50. When you relate that to other sports, it’s really cheap.” As well as learning a few new skills, having a putt on the green and playing a few holes, some great prizes will be up for grabs says Chris. “We really want kids and families to come down and give golf a go, see if they enjoy it. The structure is in
place for kids at the clubs and I think that is vital, in the past if a child wanted to play golf how did they start? You can’t just go out on the course and play because you have to learn about the game first so that’s what the coaching and this day is all about. We are trying to make the sport more accessible and more welcoming. Even if you’ve never contemplated playing before this is your chance to give it a go.” The Have a Go at Golf day is this Sunday, 21 November from 9 to 12noon at the Nelson Golf Club or from 3 to 5pm at Greenacres on the same day.

Angels bring some style to power lifting comp Three Nelson athletes will bring a bit of tough competition to the Bledis-bro Power-lifting Champs in Wellington this weekend. The three-some - comprised of a blonde, red-head and brunette - have created the Power Angles team brand for themselves. “It’s such an unglamorous sport, you’re in really tight suits, the knees are all wrapped, you have chalk all over you and when you’re doing a squat your eyes almost pop out of your head. So we’ve added a bit of tougue and cheek by creating sum fun team singlet’s” says mother of one Aimee Banks. Aimee, along with Chris Webber and Celia McMillan, are the only power lifters of Nelson to go to the champs this Saturday, which will feature 48 people from all over New Zealand and will be
versing an Australian team. Power lifting takes the best of three attempts at three difference disciplines, a squat, dead lift and bench-press. Celia, a personal trainer and mother of two, has been competing on and off for 7 years and says the sport is fantastic fun and really supportive. “It’s a sport that’s really good for women because you’re not worried about how you look. It’s a performance based so that’s what we enjoy and you’re strong and really healthy, it gives you something to strive towards as well. Having goals and consistently trying to improve yourself is really good. “ Aimee and Celia are both current national title holders and all three hope to get a personal best at the competition. Chris, a mother of
three and only in the sport for a year, says she gets some sideways glances when she says she is a power-lifter. “Even on my way here today someone said to me ‘oh, you don’t look big enough to be a power lifter’, but it’s a sport that attracts all shapes and sizes.” It has other benefits as well; Chris says she is able to do more with her kids and around the house because she is stronger. All three say they are excited and nervous about the champs but are ready for it. “We’ve been working hard and yeah, it will be exciting,” says Celia. The Power Angels say they are looking for sponsorship for this and future competitions and any enquires would be welcome at evolvefitness-solutions@hotmail. com. Primary schools take on mayor

After going unbeaten all tournament, Nayland United were bundled out of the final of the Nelson primary inter-school football championship against the Ranzau Strikers, losing 5-4 on penalties. The scores were locked 0-0 at full-time after superb defense from both schools, before Ranzau broke the deadlock in the sudden death shootout. In the previous
match, Joey Scott’s lone goal saw Nayland get past Tahunanui FC. But the standouts in the tournament were energetic striker Zac Pellow, classy playmaker Sothearo Kim, and goalkeeper Ryan Barton. Competitors were also treated to a penalty shootout competition against mayor Aldo Miccio midway through the tournament.
