by private enterprise, review existing council decision making delegations and empower the elected members to properly govern the council. Mayor Aldo Miccio says the elected councillors are a reflection of the community whether they’re “green, blue, red or independent”. “He shouldn’t stress about that because we’ve got the election coming up and once again it will be a reflection of what the community wants.” On the rates and debt issues raised by Ian, Aldo says the council does its best to keep rates low and that this year’s rate increase was the lowest since Peter Malone was mayor in the 1980s and early 90s. “For debt, we are in the bottom 15 per cent for all 72 councils in the country and we just
received an AA- Standard and Poors rating for our control of debt.” Aldo says the council debt of $60 million sits comparatively well against its assets of $1.25 billion but the council makes conscious efforts to keep debt and rates as “low as possible”. Councillor and former Green MP Mike Ward says he doesn’t think the current council is too green. “I’m quite happy for him to look for other candidates. If people like the candidates he seeks, they’ll vote for them and that’s fine. It’s a totally reasonable thing to do. But right now, is it too green? I don’t think so. I think the city is particularly beautiful and I’m proud to have been a part of that for quite a long time, on and off. If that’s what being green is then so be it, the city is lovely as a consequence.”
One of Nelson’s earliest streets came to life on Sunday to celebrate Heritage Week. More than 500 people walked the street, ducking in and out of the 150 year old cottages and making the most of historic South St. Residents of the street decked it out with vintage vehicles, cycles, Devonshire tea, homemade lemonade, baking and preserves for the event. Co-organiser Kaye Hill, says it is the first time South St has been a part of Heritage Week but this years harvest and transport theme fit perfectly. “The people that lived in the homes originally were workers, labourers and jam makers. We think the street really fits into the theme and it was a great opportunity to open their doors and invite people to come and have a great day.” A storyboard depicting the history of the street was also unveiled after being donated

The cottages are lovely.” Heritage Week runs from April 13–21 and encourages the public to uncover and explore some of Nelson’s history, with different events held in different locations throughout the city.

Dog trainer blasts ‘naïve’ owners Andrew Board
TUESDAY 16 April 2013

A dog trainer with 20 years’ experience says dog owners need to shape up and take more control of their dog while out in public. Gordon Hill is a registered NZQA assessor and dog trainer who has recently moved to Nelson and says he’s seen plenty of examples of poor dog handling during the past few months, leaving the possibility for dog attacks wide open. “People have this thought that as soon as they get to a park they can let their dog off the leash and let them go,” he says. “There’s no excuse for taking a naïve attitude because the number of children who are bitten in this country is gross, absolutely gross.” He says too many people think it’s ok to let their dog off the lead too often and often dogs aren’t getting the right training. “Some dogs get trained wrong and that’s a problem everywhere, people who aren’t qualified are training dogs. Another common problem is the puppies being taken too early from their mother. If it’s a backyard breeder they’re happy to sell a

If it’s a good breeder they won’t let you have the puppy until it’s had a full eight to nine weeks with its mother.” Nelson SPCA manager Donna Walzl agreed with Gordon’s statements, saying it causes all sorts of problems if dogs aren’t trained properly. “It makes it really difficult actually. Some of the dog owners we see don’t take them anywhere, never considered taking them to dog training and it makes life really hard for them.” Gordon says people need to be more aware of what the laws are and where and when they can let their dog off the leash.
“Just today there was a good example, a lady with a German Shepherd doing everything right, had her dog on a leash and there was a small dog there off the leash. Now if the little dog went over to the big dog and it bit it that lady would get blamed for having a vicious dog, but it wasn’t. It was the smaller dog off a lead that caused the trouble.” He says some dog owners are too relaxed and that is half the problem. “I just want everyone to be safe and a lot of what I’ve seen isn’t safe.” • To contact Gordon phone 027 215 6156.

You hold in your hands the largest issue ever produced by Nelson Weekly. At 40 pages the locally owned Nelson Weekly has shown incredible growth since it was founded two a half years ago and this week marks another important milestone in its short history. Weekly publisher Steve Page says the reason for the bigger paper is because there
are more advertisers buying space in the paper and he’s proud that it’s a “genuine” 40 page paper. “Most importantly, feedback from advertisers since we started has been fantastic. Because they are getting response they continue to advertise in the Weekly and we can put out a bigger paper. So a big thanks to our advertisers and I urge our
readers to support them. If they continue to do well, then you will continue to get great papers like this week’s one.” Nelson Weekly was founded in September 2010 and was the winner of the 2011 Chamber of Commerce Emerging Business of the Year award. It is entirely locally owned and operated and is delivered to 20,000 homes every Tuesday.

Oz cancer trust stops paying staff Your Community Newspaper
Matthew Backhouse of APNZ A cancer charity under investigation over its spending has stopped paying its staff while it considers whether to resume operations in New Zealand. The Cancer Research Charitable Trust suspended fundraising last month after Nelson Weekly revealed it had donated fewer than 5 per cent of the $1.1 million it collected from New Zealanders over four years. It was also revealed that nearly 40 per cent of the trust’s funds had gone offshore to Australia. Last month the trust’s executive officer, Gold Coast lawyer Troy Manhire, threatened to sue the Weekly if a retraction wasn’t printed. The time frame given by Mr Manhire has passed with no retraction but no action has been filed, nor has there been any further communication from him on the issue. Mr Manhire said in an email to news agency APNZ this week that staff were no longer being paid. “Our fundraising continues to be suspended and will remain so indefinitely. No staff are being paid during the suspension period.” Trustees met late last month to
discuss changing the trust’s name, given its focus had shifted from research grants to public awareness campaigns. Mr Manhire confirmed trustees had resolved to change the trust’s name - but only if the trust resumed operations in New Zealand. He said he was “unaware of any investigation” into the trust. But a Department of Internal Affairs spokeswoman this week confirmed the investigation was ongoing. “The department is still investigating and will reach a conclusion once all the facts are known. No action would be taken until the investigation is completed.” She also confirmed the trust had failed to file its latest annual returns, as required under the Charities Act. The trust’s returns for the year to June 2012 were due by the end of last year, but the spokeswoman said they had not yet been received. “The department has followed this up with the trust.” Mr Manhire would not supply APNZ with a copy of the latest returns and did not respond when asked why the returns had not been filed.

RSA set for Poppy Day It is hoped flower power will help locals who have fought in wars around the world. This Friday Returned Serviceman Associations throughout the country will be collecting for the annual Poppy Day appeal, which raises money for its members’ welfare costs. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont says every year the community gets behind the RSA and he’s hoping to see
hundreds, if not thousands, of locals wearing the poppy flower badges, signalling they have donated to the cause. Poppy Day is traditionally held on the Friday before Anzac Day and Barry says collection stands will be set up in various spots in Nelson city, Tahunanui and Stoke. Some retail shops will also have collection boxes out as of yesterday. Last year $21,000 was raised
in Nelson for Poppy Day and Barry says every dollar raised stays in Nelson. “All of it, not one cent goes to administration costs or anything like that, 100 per cent of the money raised goes right to the welfare fund of our RSA members.” Barry says they are still looking for a couple of collectors to man a stall on Trafalgar St for Poppy Day. If you are keen you can call Barry on 548 6815.

Community centre hit by fire again Phillip Rollo Reporter

Katrina McLean never thought she would have to relive the moment when the Moutere Hills Community Centre caught fire. Less than three months after the first incident, a second blaze struck, putting to waste hundreds of volunteer hours that have gone into getting the centre up and running before September. Speaking just moments after inspecting the damage caused from Friday’s fire, centre manager Katrina says she is simply devastated. “I thought it was April Fools Day if I’m being honest. It’s just unbelievable and extremely devastating. “There has been such an enormous community effort and fundraising gone into get it operating as soon as possible and we were working towards a September opening but obviously that’s not going to happen now.” Katrina says some areas of the

Equipment and other resources, including historical rugby memorabilia had also been destroyed. “It’s absolutely gutting. We’ve had a lot of support from the community over the past few months.” Upper Moutere chief fire officer Fred Ewers, who confirmed the
fire was again caused by electrical fault, says it is devastating for the whole community. “It’s put them back behind square one. It’s much the same area that has been hit but there’s much more smoke damage this time.” Four separate brigades attended the fire. They came from Upper Moutere, Mapua, Motueka and Richmond.

Region only needs two i-Sites: NTT Your Community Newspaper
Nelson city’s i-Site will not be affected by a current review of how they operate in the region. There are four i-Sites in the top of the south – at Nelson, Murchison, Motueka and Takaka – which aim to give information and booking opportunities to tourists. But Nelson Tasman Tourism is proposing to close the Takaka and Murchison centres to cut costs and replace them with information portals. NTT manages the Nelson, Takaka and Murchison i-Sites and provides funding the Motueka centre but says the costs of maintaining them all is too much and the demand from tourists, many of whom now get a lot of information from the internet, has decreased. NTT is co-owned by Nelson City and Tasman District councils and says more than 80 per cent of foot traffic and sales come from the Nelson and Motueka sites and only about 36 per cent of the operational losses. Its chair, Phil Taylor, says the cur-
rent model is not financially sustainable. Nine staff would lose their jobs if the two i-Sites were to close and NTT, along with TDC, has launched a consultation process with communities in Murchison and Golden Bay. “NTT is convinced that physical i-Site or visitor centres will still be required in the future,” says Phil. “But the look and range of services offered will need to change. Visitors will still wish to speak face-toface with a person to seek information about what there is to see and do in the area, book accommodation and activities and seek reassurance about some of the choices that are on offer.” Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive, Lynda Keene says the company has been consulting with staff at Takaka and Murchison for some months about alternative options and structures, but they were only formally informed of the proposals earlier this month.

Plea to keep pets away from weka
Celia Dasler with a flyer she and husband Ricky have delivered to their neighbours after seeing baby weka. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
A Richmond street is on weka watch after four chicks were discovered in a garden earlier this month. Lodestone Rd couple Ricky and Celia Dasler have regularly spotted native birds in their backyard as it backs onto the Dellside Reserve, but this was the first time they had found weka chicks. “Weka have always grazed around our area because it’s covered in native trees but to see the little chicks was pretty amazing,” says Ricky. Ricky says it is “quite awesome” having native birds so close to his property. “Especially when they end up in your house. They’re pretty inquisitive.”
After spotting the four chicks, the couple made up a flyer to alert neighbours as they did not want them killed by cats or dogs. “We’ve had some good responses from them and one woman said she had them down on her property too.” Neil Page of Native Bird Recovery Richmond says it is fantastic to hear the numbers are increasing. “It’s definitely on the comeback. Numbers are improving but this is still rare for areas close to Queen St. There have been other reports of chicks being seen. We’ve been trapping there since 2005 and the overall purpose has been to improve the bird numbers.”
Nelson man reunited with his plane Sinead Ogilvie It was a sense of déjà vu that reunited Nelson man and former British Army Air Corps mechanic Geoff Trow with a plane he once serviced halfway around the world more than 50 years ago. While visiting the Omaka Classic Fighters Airshow in Blenheim a few years ago, a Chipmunk WB693 caught his eye, looking eerily similar to one he had serviced as a light aircraft mechanic in Libya in the 1960s. After some research carried out by his wife Val, Geoff was shocked to realise it was the same plane. “I thought I recognised it and I was completely surprised to see it was still flying, it was even more amazing that I bumped into it in New Zealand.” After contacting the plane’s current owners, Pukekohe pilots Bryan and Sandy Stokes, Geoff was treated to a flight in the plane, for old times sake he says. “It is in really good condition and it brought back
a lot of memories of travelling as a passenger in it all those years ago. You enter the plane through the hatch and I can remember jumping up onto the wing and into it no problems back them, but of course I’m older now you see.” He says one of his most memorable services on the plane was squeezing down into the fuselage to paint over some corrosion and accidentally knocking over the tin of paint in the process. “I wriggled down with this tin of paint and spilt the tin. The fumes hit me like a brick wall. I got out ok but I do wonder if that spill of paint is the reason it’s lasted so long.” Geoff says the coincidence was once in a lifetime and that he and Val plan to stay in contact with Bryan and Sandy in future.

Singer looking for next challenge Youth
Lauren Wafer-Kiddle
Local singing extraordinaire Jontee Bowater has been taking the London musical industry by storm over the past nine months and is now looking for his next adventure. Just under two years ago, Jontee got the opportunity of a lifetime when he was awarded a scholarship for a course at the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain (NYCGB). Since then he was asked to stay on as an official member of the choir. “The way the National Youth Choir works is that you are supposed to start when you are four or five years old, and go through training until you’re 20 or 22 years old. I just got a scholarship to jump in at the age of 18.” Since returning to London last July, Jontee has performed in several NYCGB concerts, had his own soloist concert and had the opportunity to sing with Idina Menzel – an American singer and Broadway actress. In between returning to New Zealand, for a brief visit last June, Jontee performed a number of concerts for NYCGB at the Royal Albert Hall before resigning from the choir. “In August 2012, I resigned from the choir feeling that I wanted to move in a different direction. I wanted to focus more on musical theatre, which is my passion,” he says. Pursuing another passion of his, Jontee took up a job at a coffee company called Ginger and White in Belsize Park, which is renowned for serving coffee to various celebrities and people in the music industry.

go watch one of his idols Idina Menzel in concert. He had previously decided against going due to the price of the tickets. “My friend, Chris, then rang me and said he could get me tickets. When we arrived, I was really excited; we were sitting at the front of the dress circle,” he said. After her performance Idina, asked some in the audience to get up and sing with her. “I stood up and waved my hands in the air and she pointed at me and pulled me down. I got up and sang with her but I was completely numb, so star struck,” he says. Not long after, knowing that his visa was running out, Jontee started “putting things together” for his career. “After making some connections and networking, I ended up sorting myself out to do a soloist show in Soho this [past] February,” he says. Just over a month later, Jontee’s visa ran out and he has since returned to Nelson. So far, he has made plans to move to Melbourne in May or June, focussing on some goals he has set for his future. “I am planning on putting together a soloist show by myself, where I can challenge myself and enjoy sharing the work that I have put together with people across the world,” he says. However, before that he wants to pursue some “promising connections” he made in London. “If all else fails, I am planning on moving to Berlin to get involved in the underground theatre scene over there and possibly do a soloist cabaret show.”
volunteer awards
Nominations are being sought to recognise the region’s young volunteers. The aim of the awards is to recognise and celebrate youth volunteering and the positive contribution made by groups and individuals across Nelson and Tasman. The organisers of this year’s Youth Volunteer Awards want to hear about the contribution of young volunteers – those aged from 12 to 25 – so they can go into the running for an award to celebrate their achievements. Nominations are now open for groups or individuals, with the closing date of Friday May 17. “Basically it is anyone who has given their time, energy and inspiration to the community to support a whole range of great causes. We want heaps of nominations because we know there are so many people our age who are out there doing good work, often behind the scenes. What they do really makes a difference,” says Petra Higgins, who is on the Nelson Youth Council and will be one of the judges. To make a nomination visit www. volunteernelson.org.nz.

Pest butterfly worries farmers
Nelson Colelge for Girls student Lucy Mitchell leads her team down Trafalgar St on Saturday during the Longest Day, the final component of the police-run Cactus programme in Nelson. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.
Students conquer longest day After weeks of hard slog, 25 local Nelson students have successully completed the policerun Cactus programme. The programme ran over eight weeks and finished on Saturday with the Longest Day, a physical challenge which saw them overcome a range of difficult physical feats, including pulling a fire engine up Rutherford St, lifting tyres, carrying logs and racing up the cathedral steps in police riot vests. Vicky Carnegie, programme coordinator, says the course was aimed at developing and supporting youth to achieve goals, develop team building skills and encourage motivation.
“We get a lot of great feedback from the students who participate. It teaches youth self discipline, direction, team work and motivation.” Wendy Dorrington, whose son Tyson, 16, completed the course says she thinks the programme is brilliant and was proud to see him graduate. “It is a fantastic idea. It is great motivation and fitness training. He has been up at 5am three days a week doing it. He will feel great finishing and it’s a real confidence boost.” After completing the days challenges the students then formally graduated at a presentation ceremony at the Nelson College for Girls gymnasium.
Federated Farmers have joined a chorus of organisations wanting to rid the region of great white butterflies, although its focus will be on alerting others of its potential risks. Gavin O’Donnell, who heads the Nelson sector of Federated Farmers, recently sent an email to the Nelson Weekly, alarmed at the potential damage the butterfly could cause, at a time when the butterflies are due to start breeding. “Any pasture pest is a high risk because it not only reduces the quantity of feed available but also because they are cold-tolerant and can operate in the cooler temperatures,” he says. But while the support is great, Mark O’Connor, of Vegetables New Zealand, believes financial assistance is the key to stop it from spreading. “At this stage DOC are doing a good job trying to contain it along with Vegetables New Zealand, which I’m a director of, and who have put in significant funding trying to eradicate it,” he says. “Everything counts and we appreciate it but
DOC have been left out there to push this along. We haven’t had a lot of support from Federated Farmers and the dairy industry, which does 360,000 hectares of brassica vegetables, so I would’ve thought they’d be just a little bit concerned.” The multi-agency effort is led by the Department of Conservation with Vegetables NZ, the Ministry of Primary Industries, Tasman District Council and the Nelson City Council. The caterpillars and their tiny yellow eggs are generally found in clusters on host plants, particularly nasturtium, honesty and brassica vegetables such as broccoli and cabbages, and it can reduce its host plant to a skeleton overnight. Since the butterfly was first found in Nelson in 2010 it has spread to Richmond with a few isolated finds further out in Tasman and more recently in Best Island and the Glen. “We rely on the public to spot anything. Without the public we’re going to be up against it. We need every cent we can to get rid of this.”
Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: My daughter is in year 12 and
wants to study at university in Wellington in 2015. I am a single parent on a low income, and can’t financially support her. She will only get $211 per week from her student allowance. How can she pay her $340 week hall of residence cost? A: University study is getting more and more expensive. It is great that you are both thinking ahead about this big financial decision. Encourage your daughter to: Write up a budget of her likely costs of living including the hall fee. Calculate the living cost shortfall (which could be around $200 per week or $6000 for the academic year) Explore local options for study so she could live at home Consider staying with family, or maybe going flatting Start saving money earned from working while she is still at school Apply for scholarships: She may need excellent grades in yr.12 to apply for scholarships which can cover fees and living costs Think about taking a working gap-year so she can save for university Work part-time while she is studying at university I think a debt for education is a good investment if it means your daughter will earn more in the future.

SAVE THE CHILDREN FAIR: Helen Newnham, left, sells an item to a customer at the Save the Children Fair held at the Stoke Memorial Hall on Saturday. Organiser Isabelle Jones was pleased with this year's turnout and says a record number of items had been donated. "We've had so much donated and I think that's because we have a great reputation," she says. Most of the profits raised would go towards educational projects in the Solomon Islands, while the rest is going into an emergency fund for children which is used when tragedy strikes. The event, sponsored by Stirling Sports saw Robbie Sinclair leave with a brand new shotgun and Mitchell Rowling took home a .22 rifle. Martin O’Connor was named the overall winner after he took out 72 of 80 targets. Tuesday February 26 Handmade cushions donated to Nelson Hospital by local woman Katie Trickett have been well received by breast cancer patients with at least 100 of the pillows given since their introduction on March 1st. The pillows are designed to protect the surgical area during healing after surgery and hospital staff say they have had great feedback on the pillows which are being mostly utilised at night and in the car to protect against a seat belt. They have also had women who are planning for surgery, ask for them.

After my husband and I got married, he had said to me that he would never buy me an eternity ring, even though I hinted many times over the years. I had my engagement ring and wedding ring, so he felt he didn't need to prove his love for me with another. Then one day, the diamond fell out of my engagement ring. I was devastated but luckily I caught it before it could roll away, and taped it back in my ring to keep it safe until I could take it to the jewellers and have it properly set. My husband took me out for lunch for my 40th birthday. We sat down at the table with a bottle of wine to celebrate. Then, to my surprise, he placed a little box in front of me. I opened it up and found not only a beautiful eternity ring but also my engagement ring all fixed and sparkling like new. I was so happy I burst into tears of joy and happiness, I finally had the eternity ring I had always dreamed of - but I think I was more thrilled to learn that my husband had secretly taken my engagement ring into the jewellers to have the diamond set back in place, and also used it to gauge the right size to buy my eternity ring. I had never expected such a thing! People in the restaurant were congratulating us - I think they thought he had just proposed to me! It was the most romantic day of my life. I wept and could hardly eat the meal we had ordered. We have now been happily married for 26 years.

I do and have seldom been the only one there. I'm sure more people would park there, if you could get across the road without risking your life. • A tanker, car carrier, general steel and timber carrier, cement ship, four container ships, and eight large fishing vessel movements, all arrived and or departed in the last week keeping the port and stevedores active. • The weather has been enjoyable over the last week and it is very different to not have the Wednesday night racers as their summer series comes to an end. Winter racing starts in May so it will be good to see the yachts out again. • Fishing still appears to be pretty good for everyone else but me. I suppose if I put a line out things could improve. • It’s the weather we have to watch as the nights come earlier and the temperatures drop. • On Thursday the wind changed from 5 knots from the North to 25 knots from the west creating a challenge for some and some exciting sailing for others. Would you know where to run to for shelter if it happened to you? Is your vessel equipped to handle this type of sudden change? • Always check the weather forecast before you go and then monitor the now-casting whilst you are at sea on channel 22. Don’t forget to tell the shore contact if you are going to be delayed home. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Anzac show ready for action Local actors Adam Lines and Maz Kirkham dressed for their parts in the upcoming Lest We Forget show which starts this weekend at Founders Park. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie Founders Park will come alive when the Lest We Forget show returns to Nelson bringing the sights and sounds of wartime history complete with gunfire, explosions and drama. Put on by the Dramatix Theatre Development Trust and organised as part of Heritage Week, The Blitz Under a Bomber’s Moon is the 6th annual show with organiser TJ Ramsay promising it will be as loud and dramatic as ever and provide a unique way to discover history. “We think living history is the most ef-
fective and immediate way to educate people. We aim for realism, war is not a game.” The show will include a Pacific war display, films, battle re-enactments and the public will experience what it was really like to be amid a war torn town, with collapsed buildings, firemen and air raid shelters. Upon entering, each person will receive ID papers, which TJ says the public had better keep on them at all times to avoid being arrested. “This is a highly interactive show, so people should
be prepared to be a part of a community helping each other through the worst of times, because together we’re stronger.” Last year’s show drew in more than 4000 people and TJ says this year’s event is shaping up to be another crowd pleaser. “A lot of work has gone into the show and we’re really looking forward to it.” The Lest We Forget show runs between 10am and 4pm on Saturday April 20, Sunday April 21 and Anzac Day April 25 at Founders Park with entry $2 per person.

Trudy Smith is co-owner and managing director of Hardykids, and has two beautiful boys with her husband Nic. Trudy’s passion growing up was dancing, which she did professionally, followed by a legal executive qualification. Now her passion is with children and business. Trudy helps design playgrounds for other childcare centres and has recently renovated Hardykids entire playground, creating a natural garden to provide Trudy Smith stimulating and adventurous areas of play for children to explore and relax. Developing the purpose-built centre means children get to experience the benefits of under floor heating, cosy sleep rooms and separate play areas for their qualified teachers to focus on each age of the child’s development and care. At Hardykids they believe that every child needs a strong and secure base while in care, therefore they provide each child with a primary caregiver who will support them through the settling process, help them with all their routines such as sleeping, bottle feeds and nappy changes. Hardykids has a special touch providing a unique home away from home for your children. Renaissance Hair Salon is Nelson’s organic hair salon. Tired of working with products containing chemicals such as ammonia, Sonja Hamilton jumped at the chance to take on the salon and her and her team now pride themselves on helping like minded people avoid using harmful chemicals and toxins on their hair. Renaissance Hair Salon use the Organic Colour System and only use products that are manufactured as naturally as possible, free from ammonia, resorcinol and parabens. The benefits mean less scalp irritation, a clean fresh environment for both the client and the hairdresser, and perhaps more importantly, healthier hair. The salon itself is situated in a beautiful old building on the second floor, with plenty of sunlight and space to relax. It features two cutting rooms and a processing area which is both private and comfortable. The team at Renaissance Hair Salon invite you to come in and enjoy a free consultation, where they can discuss your choice of style and colour and determine the condition of your hair with their special wet stretch test. While you’re at it you may be tempted to try some of their natural beverages, or enjoy a lovely long scalp massage. Autumn in Nelson has to be one of my favourite months. Lovely crisp, cool mornings, warm days and not much wind. It is also really good to get the night temperatures down so we can sleep a bit easier! The colour from the Sasanqua camellias’ is starting again both in the garden and along the Railway reserve. These are some of my favourite plants as they are so easy to grow and are relatively maintenance free. They are beautiful in flower right at the start of the winter season, are not bothered by frosts (some of the white Crabapple "Wrights Scarlett" Laden with fruit and flowers get a bit of damage Parthenocissus quinquefolia. but they seem to keep going…), they do not grow too big for the developed quite an interest in gardening smaller garden and come in a good range and growing his own organic produce. One day we may get to see this “vege room” for ourselves! Autumn is a really busy time in the garden what with cleaning up fallen leaves, cutting back evergreens and hedges, snipping perennials and trimming lavenders, feeding and re-planting lawns, the list goes on and on. It is also very satisfying to sit back with a glass of wine at the end of a busy day and see the results of your efforts.
of blood and bone with some potash to the top 10cm of soil before planting. • Handle small seedlings carefully when planting out and try not to crush the stems. Plant only to the same depth as they were in the containers. Space as recommended by the grower. Planting too close can result in leggy plants. • It is a good idea to take the tips out of annuals as the first flowers come – seems cruel but you will get a stronger bushier plant as a result and more flowers in the long run. • Pop tulip bulbs in the fridge to sit for 5-6 weeks before planting out at the end of April/early May. • Plant out most other spring bulbs from now on, especially after we have had some rain. • Keep cleaning up under hosta’s and hellebores and other herbaceous perennials as the mealy bugs and aphids love to overwinter under their strappy leaves.
• Now is the time to refresh your pots and tubs that are past their best. Take out the old plants and also remove about 1/3 of the mix. Pop in some miniature daffodils or freesias, top up with fresh potting mix and plant out with pansies, polyanthus, primulas and violas. • Keep feeding your pots with a liquid food such as Powerfeed, Thrive, Biogold and a good dose of Seasol every month or so will add strength to both pot and garden plants. • Prepare your soil well for your garden planting of annuals and vege seedlings by mixing in some well-rotted compost and sheep pellets and ensuring your drainage is good. Not many plants are happy with soggy feet! Apply a general garden fertilizer or mixture
I once heard it said that “change is our constant companion”. By the time you read this our family will have grown by one more baby boy (yet to be named) so I will be spending a bit more time down in Christchurch. This and also some other personal changes mean that with some regret I have decided to “move on” from this column. I have enjoyed the last two years but, like the seasons, it is time for a change. Thank you for your emails, phone calls, visits etc.

Cobras out to end Tigers’ run The Tahunanui Tigers remain the only unbeaten side in the TRL, but if the Stoke Cobras have anything to say about it, that streak won’t be lasting long. Cobras player-coach Troy Wilson says this will be the first time in two years that his side goes into the fixture as underdogs, with the Tigers stretching its winning streak with a 54-8 victory over the Victory Phoenix Vikings. But he is still confident the Cobras back up with another two points following its 14-10 win over the Wanderers Wolves on Saturday. “I know the Tigers are out for our blood after last year’s semi-final but we’re all men and we’re all going to be bashing ourselves next Saturday,” he says. “They came flying back at the end of last season and won five in a row until they hit us in the semis, which was decided in the final seconds of the game. I think this game will be won by the fittest team so

we just need to stick to our game plan and our structure.” Tahunanui Tigers player-coach Peter Akuhata says this weekend’s game will be an important one for the club. “We always expect a lot from the Cobras because they’re two-time champions and we won’t be underestimating them,” he says. “A lot of time will be spent at training this week just making sure the team is at our best.” The Stoke Cobras will take on the Tahunanui Tigers at Lower Ngawhatu at the earlier time of 1pm. The other two fixtures, which see the Richmond Rabbits face the Victory Phoenix Vikings at Lower Ngawhatu, and the Wanderers Wolves taking on the Wairau Taniwha in Brightwater, will both kick off at 2:30pm.
JUNIOR FOOTBALL: An Nguyen of the Nelson Suburbs Kingz in action during the side’s 4-0 loss to Richmond Celtic on at Saxton Field on Saturday. The game was both team’s second of the 2013 season. Nelson Bays Football general manager, Clive Beaumont, says participation numbers for the junior grades playing – grades 9 to youth league – has risen four per cent on last year. Grades 7 and 8 will kick off in term two, after the school holidays. Clive says the figures are great reading for the sport. “Football is the number one participation sport for juniors in New Zealand and is third on the list of sports kids want more access to, so kids are wanting to play the game.” Clive says he isn’t exactly sure where the extra players have come from but says some have come from Christchurch families who have recently moved to Nelson. Mountain bikers race for school champs

Waimea College’s Henry Jaine and Nayland College’s Olivia Miller can both lay claim to being the top Nelson secondary school mountain bikers, after the pair won two individual titles each at the Codgers Trail on Wednesday. Participation numbers increased hugely on previous years with 107 riders competing at the Tasman Secondary School Mountain Biking Championship – a figure that is more than double the 45 that turned out last year when the event was first held. Secondary schools regional sport director Shanine Hermsen says the addition of downhill had proven popular. “The course is intermediate level so it’s not so intimidating and a good way for beginners to give it a go, there were some very fast times and the fact that the numbers have doubled since last year show the discipline's popularity, last year some were hesitant to enter but
this year they were all pre-entered, even all the girls,” she says. The courses were set by event organiser and Nelson Mountain Bike president Chris Mildon, who was also pleased with the turnout. “It was great to see such huge numbers this year, the conditions were great and it was good to see all the schools supporting and cheering each other on, it made it a really great atmosphere.” Senior girls champion Olivia finished with a one minute lead on Golden Bay High School’s Holly Ford, who placed second while Kate Newton from Nelson College for girls took the junior girls title. Senior boys champion Henry of Waimea College blitzed the six laps of the cross country course in 59 minutes 30 seconds, in a huge lead of more than five minutes with Jacob Anderson from Nayland College in second.
Big turn out for junior tennis open The Nelson Junior Open attracted 130 tennis players from all parts of the country, making it tough work for local players who failed to pick up any of the top titles. The doubles competition was held at the Tasman Tennis Club on Friday with the singles competition running over the weekend. Due to rain on Saturday some plate and consolation rounds were cancelled. The open featured boys and girls grades from 8s to 16s. Grace Meehan was one of the best for Nelson falling just short in the girls 8s final against Felicity Pye of Mid-Canterbury. In the boys 10s two locals make the quarter finals with Luke Brown coming up against second seed Cantabrian Nick Schneideman who had taken out the doubles title on the Friday. Schneideman who was beaten by Brown at the Marlborough Junior Open in January was out for revenge and that is what he achieved beating Brown 9-5. Other local contender was Luca Molnar who came up against Cantabrian Oliver Molloy. Molloy seeded 4th in the tournament had beaten Molnar at the Marlborough Junior Open earlier in the year so this time it was Molnar's chance for payback. Molnar paid the best match of his early tennis career winning the match 9-7 and making him the only local competitor to reach the 10's semi's. Molnar then met Schneideman who was on a roll and dominated the match with Molnar running out of puff and being defeated 9-5. The final was won by the top seed Edwin Dargue 9-3 over Schneideman. The 10's boys had Nelson's Sam Innes-Walker had a strong performance in the plate winning the final 9-4 over Canterbury's Finn Emslie-Robson.
Nelson's Holly Mace competes at the Tennis Nelson Junior Summer Open. Photo: Phillip Rollo. The 10's girls singles saw two locals make the semis with Olivia Smith getting knocked out by the top seed Kyla Otway 9-1. Kate Edens in the other semi beat Lydia Pye 9-5 to advance to the final and keep Nelson's chances alive. Marlborough's Otway was too strong in the final beating Edens 9-0. The plate final was an all local affair between Golden Bay's Bridie Lund and Hope's Rani McGuire. Lund took out the match 9-6. 12's boys event saw David Zohrab the only Nelson competitor to advance to the quarter finals event where he then met second seed Jamie Garbett from Christchurch. Zohrab put up a great fight but Garbett advanced through to the semi winning the match 6-4, 6-3. Garbett then went on to win the final beating the top seed Harrison Darling
5-7, 6-2, 10-8. The 12's plate final was an all local matchup between Rohan Trill and Luke Meehan. Trill's consistency wore Meehan down with Trill taking out the final 9-5. The 12's girls best performer was local Jordan Berry seeded 6th find the form she has been looking for when up against 3rd seed Caroline Murdoch in the quarter final. Saturday afternoon had Berry one set up and 4-1 up in the second set when play was washed out. Turning up first thing Sunday morning to complete the match saw Murdoch claw back and take the second set. Berry gained composure and won the tie-break 3rd set and the match 6-3, 4-6, 10-2. Berry then met 2nd seed Annie Coates in the semi's but lost the match 6-3, 6-0. Coates went on to win the final over fellow Cantabrian Charlotte Lee 6-4, 0-1 retired. Out of towners Taylor Nelson beat Sean Howson 7-6, 6-3 in the 14's boys final, however local competitor Oscar Symonds won the plate final against Samein Ferguson 9-3. The 14's girls singles was a draw with plenty of locals competing however it was the one out of town entry of Abby Hogg seeded top that took out the final 6-2, 6-3 over local Lauryne Ashby. Frances Clark of Golden Bay beat Nelson's Holly Mace 9-4 in the plate final. The 16's boys went on seedings with top seed Sean Zumbraegel beat local Sam Edens 6-1, 6-1 in the semi-final, whilst the other semi final with second seed local Elliot Le Petit beat Ben Petley 6-0, 6-2. Zubraegel was too strong for Le Petit winning the final 6-2, 6-1. The plate final saw locals Aidan MacKenzie and Zak Lyttle battle it out but MacKenzie won the match 9-5.

Stoke fade against table toppers Stoke are eyeing up the competitions new boys for its first win of the season after a second half blow out saw it lose to Wanderers on Saturday. In its first Car Company division one rugby game against Waimea Old Boys, Accessman Stoke made a slow start before roaring back into the game and almost sealing the unlikeliest of wins. On Saturday and on its home track – a sodden Greenmeadows – Stoke got out to a solid start, leading Wanderers 6-0 at half time and looking likely to break down the visitors defence which leaked 19 points in its first up win the week before against Nelson. But, like it did the week before, Stoke allowed Wanderers to score four tries and ended up losing the game 26-13. Coach Willem Van Niekerk says he was happy with the lift in intensity from his players but tactical errors let them down. “Small things can change a big game in rugby and we made some

errors at the breakdown and in the collision areas and they countered on that. But the players gave it their all and I’m proud of them. Wanderers are, in my view, a very balanced side but not unbeatable, definitely not unbeatable.” Stoke will once again play host this weekend when Kahurangi – a combination of Huia and Riwaka – come to town and Willem says it is a game his side is targeting for a victory. “We want to target every game for a win, but the whole level of this competition has gone up. So no game will be easy, the game on the weekend was played at a heck of a pace. But we want to win this game, I will target this one.” Galbraith Nelson had the bye over the weekend after its opening loss to Wanderers and will travel to play Waimea at Jubilee Park this Saturday. Both games will kick off at 3pm.

Nelson Netball
After several trials held throughout Nelson, local clubs have selected their teams for the oncoming 2013 season and colleges are in the throes of trials as they wait for summer sporting commitments to be completed. For anyone who wants to get on the court this season and is perhaps new to the area, or has been unable to trial, the first port of call should be the Nelson Netball Centre website www.nelsonnetball.co.nz simply go to the Club contact page to make your enquiry. The season tips off with the Geraldine Hodgson Tournament which is to be held at the Saxton Courts on Saturday and Sunday April 20 and 21. The tournament is a great opportunity for coaches to try combinations and
generally use the time on court to gel their team. Often it is the final “trial” for college teams if they have chosen to run a squad before naming their school’s elite team. This year the GH Tournament, as the tournament is fondly known, named so for Nelson Netball’s Patron Geraldine Hodgson, will be run slightly different after a request from one of the clubs. Previously played over three grades, this year the tournament will be played in four grades. The A grade will have two sections of five, which will play a round robin on Saturday before going into crossovers on Sunday. As a first, there will be a break during the day for players, coaches and umpires alike to catch their breath and fuel
