Two saved by ‘heroic’ bystanders Four men are being hailed as heroes after jumping into a chilly creek to rescue two people from a submerged car. One women, Janice (Jan) Anne Fa’avae, aged 68, died in the incident at lunchtime on Saturday when the car she was driving with her husband and two year old grandson, went from Wildman Ave, over QEII Dr and into the creek. She was the mother of multi-sport champion Nathan Fa’avae. But the efforts of several members of the public are being hailed as “heroic” and emergency services say they saved two lives. “They’ve got to take the credit for their bravery and just getting in and doing it. It wouldn’t happen in every town in New Zealand or every place in the world. I think Nelson really has to stand up and be proud there,” says Nelson Fire station officer Craig Davies. “Jumping into a murky creek like

that, not knowing what was in there and what they’re going to find in the car is an enormous task on any day. Imagine diving in that cold water and not being able to see? Even though the tragedy of the situation meant that one died, two have been saved.” Paua diver Philip Walker, 53, told the New Zealand Herald that several attempts were needed to free Mrs Fa’avae, who was caught in the crashed car by her seatbelt. Bitterly cold water and panic forced him to resurface several times. “I was panicking and holding my breath and not doing it long enough and trying to get someone out before it was too late. “You sort of think about what I

Muddy way to end school term

On a day when most sane people were rugged up in jackets, hats and scarves, students of Nayland College were braving mud and bitterly cold water. The annual mud run was just one part of the mid winter event that is held on the last day of the second term. Year 10 student Julia Burrough, pictured above, was one of around 50 students that took part in the mud run.

“I think adding more clearway would just depress the area even more in terms of shopping and amenities.”

“I think we need to keep easy access to the shops, so it probably isn’t a good idea to extend them.”

“I think they should be extended and there should be no parking between the hours of 7am and 8pm.”

I’d prefer it to stay as it is, I certainly don’t think more parking should be removed. A lot of elderly aren’t able to walk long distances.”

Two of the other rescuers were Nelson’s Gary Miller and Brightwater’s Kyle Paki Paki. Sergeant Matt Elliott, of Nelson, says the efforts of the men were heroic and they had risked their own safety in attempting to rescue the family. “I have no doubt their actions have saved the lives of a man and a young

child.” The two year old boy, Ali Fa’avae-Mika, was flown to Starship Hospital in Auckland and the man, Filemoni (Phil) Fa’avae, remains in Nelson Hospital. The incident has been referred to the coroner. Craig says Nelson should be proud of the four men. “I can’t say enough about their actions and what they did. We’re professionals and trained to deal with that sort of situation but for them to go in off their own bat takes a lot of courage. It’s good to know there’s people like that The car driven from Wildman Ave, over QEII Dr and into the creek near the around.” Trafalgar Centre on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Tahuna business owners to protest “Stop ripping our community apart.” That’s the plea from Tahunanui Business Association member John Gilbertson who says business owners are now so fed up they’re ready to march in protest at a shelved report from New Zealand Transport Agency into the best option for traffic at the Tahunanui lights. At a meeting last week – initially planned to discuss the findings of the report – the business association says it came up with a simple solution to the problems with the clearways at the lights – get rid of them. John says businesses along the strip opposite KFC have noticed a drop in business since clearways were put in when the lights were established several years ago. Their solution would be to get rid of the clearways and return the intersection to just one lane each way. “They [NZTA] say they can’t finish the report until the results of the Rocks Rd study is finished so we are just stuck with it the way it is until then,” says John. “But we are saying enough is enough, this is destroying our community and

Our solution will also ensure the viability of the businesses and services that are currently under threat.” The business association, along with the Tahuna Community Centre, were unanimous in their decision to protest the inaction from NZTA and John says the community is being ripped apart by the traffic on the road. He supports the proposed southern link being built but says that’s not what this action is about. Businesses just want their car parking restored and if that means more of a wait for commuters then tough luck, he says.

“They say traffic will be held up by an extra four minutes at peak times without the clearways. But four minutes is nothing, especially when you’ve got the nice view off Rocks Rd to look at while you wait, it’s hardly a chore is it?” says John. The association says Tahunanui will not continue to be Nelson’s “Cinderella community” and a protest march will be held on August 9. “Tahunanui has one of the most beautiful city beaches in the country. Access and enjoyment of this gem continues to be eroded by the increasing presence of heavy freight, which is also tearing the heart out of our community and threatening the future of our local businesses,” he says.

Nelson’s newest art festival launched on Thursday night with lanterns and the wishes of local children setting sail across the pond at Queens Gardens. Hundreds of children from around the region took part in the Float A Wish event, the opening of the Light Nelson festival which will take place this weekend. The event saw children of all ages construct and float biodegradable lanterns in the pond, with each holding a “wish” for their community. Organiser Clint Fern says he was “absolutely delighted” with the event and that he never expected it to be so successful. “It was everything we could have hoped for, it was fantastic. It was great to have such a huge involvment from the community.” Students from Tasman School, Hira School and Nelson Central School were invited to participate. They used materials such as flax, branches, paper and string to build their lanterns. Julie Vlugter brought her daughter along to the event and says she thought it was “really great”. “It’s been really nice, it would be a good thing to have every year.” Light Nelson will run this weekend between July 19 and 21 with free light installations and light exhibitions by local artists to be held between the hours of 5.30pm and 9.30pm at Queens Gardens.

Eight new ‘affordable homes’ built Eight new homes to be rented to low income families will be officially opened in Nelson on Thursday. The homes are part of an affordable housing development by the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, built on St Lawrence St, near Victory. The trust says the opening marks the end of the development’s first stage and the two and three bedroom homes will be rented at 80 per cent of the market value. Trust director Keith Preston says affordable housing is one of the pressing social issues of our time. “These homes are warm, dry and affordable and contribute to our strategy of building a portfolio of quality homes for low to mid income families living in the Nelson, Tasman and West Coast regions.” A $1 million grant from the Social Housing Fund made up 46 per cent of the scheme cost and the trust raised a mortgage to cover the balance of the costs. Nelson City Council contributed to the scheme

by waiving the development contributions. The development is one of the first to be funded through the Social Housing Fund. Michael Pead, director of the government’s Social Housing Unit, says it’s great to see the trust responding so positively to the need for quality affordable housing in the region. “The government is pleased to partner with the trust to help deliver more affordable homes for New Zealanders in need”. The trust was established in 2004 and already owns 36 houses at a value of more than $10 million. It offers secure tenancies to local people and families who do not qualify for state housing and who find it difficult to access the private rented sector but can afford to pay up to 50 per cent of their income on rent. The homes were built by Jennian Homes and will be officially opened by Nelson MP and housing minister Nick Smith.

Up against 30 other stylists from the Nelson and Marlborough region, Lauren's long-hair-up -style beat out the competition. She describes the winning look as a "forward focussed, fresh,

"It’s all about leading by example, I could say 'oh no, I'm a trainer I don't need to participate' but it's about leading the team by example and being involved in these sorts of competitions. The awards will be held in Nelson next year.

Three police chases in one night A man was put in hospital after a stolen ute occupied by two 16 year olds crashed into him early Sunday. The crash was during a police chase that started after they tried to stop the vehicle in Richmond. The youths continued along Whakatu Dr to Waimea Rd and then to Main Rd Stoke where the

driver lost control and crashed into a car coming the other way. The boys were taken into custody after the crash and are assisting police with their enquiries. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. In other, unrelated, incidents two Nelson men will face a raft of driving related charges after

police pursuits in the region on Saturday evening. In the first incident, at about 8.20pm, a Nissan car was “clocked” travelling in excess of 150 kilometres per hour on the state highway through Brightwater and subsequently failed to stop for police. A short pursuit followed but was

abandoned due to the risk to public safety before the vehicles got to Richmond. The second pursuit on Nayland Rd, Stoke at 9pm again involved excessive speed and the pursuit was abandoned after the driver turned off his headlights to avoid detection. On both occasions police carried out enquires

immediately after the abandoned pursuits which led to the drivers being identified, the cars impounded, and charges being laid. “It’s incredibly disappointing to see drivers taking such risks that have a potential to end in disaster”, says Sergeant Shane Miles, of Nelson.

When Kevin Greenfield was a young man all he wanted was a Ford Zephyr – now he has two. The Atawhai man has restored both cars himself and has taken them around the country visiting towns, cities and Ford conventions. He says owning the car is everything he thought it would be when he was younger. “I used to be into boats but as you get older you get over the swaying so this was what I wanted to get into and it’s nice to be able to pop out for a drive whenever I want.” Kevin’s 1959 Zephyr Mark

two is just one of around two dozen Fords expected at the Classic Ford Club’s annual get-together at Rabbit Island. The date is organised to coincide with Ford founder, Henry Ford’s birthday. Kevin says the get together will be on Sunday July 28 from 11am onwards and he encourages all Ford owners and members of the public to come out and have a look at the cars. “We usually get a good turn out and even pick up the odd new member out there so it’s something we enjoy each year.”

Art expo draws close to 5000 people Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz More than $100,000 worth of local art went out the door of the Trafalgar Centre during Art Expo Nelson. The three day expo saw more than 120 artists exhibit work with around 120 pieces selling. It was the second year the expo has been held and organiser Louise Allan says it was bigger than last year and was a "huge success". "Last year we had about 3500 people and this year was more than 4500 so we're really happy with how it went." The expo opened on Friday – a day earlier than last year – but Louise says Sunday was the most popular day with a lot of art sold. "A lot of people came in on the Friday or Saturday and came back to buy the piece they wanted on Sunday, so that was really good." She says a lot of people came from Blenheim, Picton, Christchurch and Wellington with a couple from Canada even buying art to send home. The expo aims to give local artists a platform to sell their work and attract buyers from Nelson as well as from around New Zealand. It is the biggest art expo in the South Island and Louise says the organisers worked hard to attract visitors from outside the region and she says it worked. "Nelson City Council deserves credit for helping us with that and it was great to see people from all over New Zealand buying art."

Grandma’s ring goes missing Win a free Sinead Ogilvie

weekend to Wellington

Reporter

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz The loss of her grandmother’s ring couldn’t be more devastating for LeeAnne Weenink, who has worn the family heirloom for 12 years straight without ever taking it off -- until one recent Sunday. While volunteering at Nelson Musical Theatre painting sets for their Peter Pan show, she took off the ring and placed it in her purse to avoid getting paint on it and hasn’t seen it since. Lee-Anne doesn’t believe it was stolen because both her iPhone and some cash in her purse were still there, so she thinks it must have dropped out of her purse either outside the theatre or dropping her child to Nelson Central School the next day. She says she felt pure “horror” when she realised it was missing, as it was the last link that her family has with her grandfather, who died when Lee-Anne was just seven years old. “My grandfather proposed to my grandmother with it, I wouldn’t get upset if it was just any ring, it’s not the value of the ring itself that’s upsetting, it’s how much it means to my family.” The loss of the ring comes as a double blow to Lee-Anne who says she specifically made a point of wearing it everywhere because the matching

Kids still marbles over old-school classic game Remember bombers? How about queenies, steelies and kingies? Hit one get them all? Well it’s marble season and from the first day of term, hundreds of Hampden St School students will be taking part in the traditional game. Hampden St School kids lose their marbles over the game every year and it just doesn’t seem to die out says deputy principal Katherine Barris. She says marble season snowballs in popularity and she expects it to do the same this year, with the beginning of the season announced at a school assembly on Friday. “Normally on the first day you’ll have two or three groups playing, then all of a sudden we’ll have the whole

school out there playing marbles.” She says in spite of more technologically advanced toys available to kids, the old school game continues to maintain its popularity among students. “They love it. It’s a simple, basic toy that is affordable for everybody.” Prinicipal Don McLean says marble season is “part of the fabric of the school” and is mostly self-governed by the students, with guidance from teachers. “It’s a fun activity that most kids can access easily. It also teaches children about winning and losing.”

Hampden St kids aren’t alone, with long time Henley School teacher and deputy principal Eric Gardner saying he can’t remember a time during his spell at the school where students didn’t play marbles. Because marble season for the school includes just the last week of each term, Eric believes they are a bit of a novelty which has aided in the longevity of the game. “It’s a novelty, they’re like a collectable and it’s fun, it’s different, it involves everyone. There are juniors right through to seniors all playing marbles together. "I would say on a good day you’d have half the school playing and in our school there are over 500 students.”

brought to you by

Tahuna police station to be closed: I am writing this concerning your headline of July 9, in which the police mentioned comprehensive policing. Recently our neighbour and friend was woken and discovered a person in her bedroom. Bravely she grappled with the intruder and at the same time tried to contact the police. The intruder made their escape when our friend could hold on no longer. The police duly arrived some 25

minutes later. Their reason for the delay was there were only two officers on duty in the Nelson area. Our friend could have been fighting for her life! So much for comprehensive policing. Lately our area has been used as a race track by what the police fondly call boy racers. We tend to think of them as idiots whose IQ shrinks in direct proportion to the size and noise of their exhaust pipes. One of our friends remarked that maybe it was not just their IQ that was reflected but also their sexual prowess. A very concerned resident, Bob English.

Not sure that would be of any use. maybe planning to strengthen the structure incase of an earthquake would work better than a sign tell us that it may fall if there is one!! And if it is that dangerous then it should not be in use. Chris Williams. Does Tahuna and Stoke need a bit of a upgrade? The roller skating rink is a hidden treasure (well, it was until the gardens were cleaned-up yesterday - you can now see the rink from the road - yeah). It would be great if we could find some benefactors to help us get new skates, revamp the facilities and encourage more people to take up roller sports (especially roller derby). Debra Jane. I live in Tahuna and the slide/entertainment area is in such a state

- so so depressing! Tear it down and start again, with a state of the art indoor-outdoor pool/slides/crazy golf/lazertag year round place to go! Am sure it would help the Natureland zoo as well, with a bit of effort made to the area it would be such a draw card. Rachel Yerbury-Wilson. Nelson needs a water-theme park in Tahuna, more places for teenagers. The Stoke shopping centre needs to be modernized and the car park area changed. The land next to Mitre 10 Mega needs a purpose. We need some new excitement in Nelson, been here 10 years and starting to get bored of looking at the same four walls, ie beach, city, mountains, hills. The sun is not enough anymore. Bonita Wilkinson. That's why Stoke is such a treasure. The NCC haven't ruined it yet. Oh no, the only good parts they have ruined by trying to put in walkways where not needed and wasting money on ticking boxes. Saxton is a gem and they ruined that by not putting enough seating in. NCC track record isn't great. Perhaps sub committees of each area would really help. Jay Park. The modellers pond needs to be maintained better and there could be some exciting things put at sides of the railway track and the bridges and tunnels given additional features. This area is a wonderful asset and the railway people are to be commended for all they do. Carol Stewart.

Try a Saturday workshop During the winter term many of you may like to attend a day time workshop so we are offering several Saturday classes. Belly Dancing (no bellies will be exposed!) is a fun and elegant form of exercise. Perfect pastry (yes, every time) and Simply Indian (fragrantly, mouth-watering) from our college kitchen. Weaving – dust off your old table loom or borrow one and have a go. What is EFT? Come along and find out in our Energy and EFT workshop. Oral Storytelling – Everyone has stories to tell – develop your skills and keep children spellbound. Get creative in our Stylish Pots workshop or learn how to make sports gear and play games to keep your family active in Creating Junkyard Sports. We welcome six new tutors to Waimea College Community

Education. Marijke Lups will teach wonderful methods to get the Shabby Chic French/Italian interior design look. Will Taylor will help you create great Pewter Jewellery. Savita Prasad will share her love of Indian cuisine. Bernadette van Dalen will take you on a journey with Printmaking the Monoprint way. Annabelle Laing, a flute teacher, is offering beginner classes plus the chance to play in a flute ensemble and Diane Hodgson will inspire you with weaving. You may prefer not to sit and watch TV at night so join us and other likeminded people in our nice, warm classrooms for all our evening classes. Bring a friend, you’ll enjoy yourselves. The Holy Trinity Church in Richmond is set to hold it’s seventh annual book fair this weekend with a great turnout expected says coordinator Shiona Frengley. The church holds the event each year in order to make books accessbile to people from all walks of life, and if they can fundraise for the church at the same time it’s even better says Shiona. “It’s not about making money, but making books available to people at a knocked down price.” She says over the years the fair has been “very well supported” and welcomes the public to either donate books to the cause Shiona Frengley, coordinator of the Holy Trinity Church book or come along to the event, to fair with just some of the titles that will be up for grabs this be held this Saturday between weekend. TUESDAY 16 July 2013

r y h P a o r w a t T

When it comes to party time, it’s easy for parents to get stressed, blow the budget and vow to never do it “that way” again. Throwing a birthday party should be fun and a semi-homemade birthday party might just be the ticket for finding time to let your creativity run free. • How about a Dr Seuss themed party. One fish, two fish, red fish blue fish. Add red and blue food colouring to tuna and spread between bread. • If you have a soccer fanatic, make cute placemats from artificial lawn turf and use white electrical tape to make the markings of a field. Cupcakes can be made into soccer

cupcakes by adding green food colouring to coconut and sprinkling on the icing to make pretend grass. Then add eatable soccer balls on the top. • For little girls a fairy party will be sure to please. Buy cheap tulle and glitter and fake flowers and the girls can make their own tutus or crowns. Be sure to invite Faerie Lou! •Dinosaur theme - play Tyrannosaurus Says, Pin the Horn on the Tr i c e r a t o p s , and kids could make their own dinosaur masks. Parcel up some easter eggs and label them “dinosaur eggs” for the kids to take home as party bags.

Faerie Lou Children’s Entertainer

For a pony lover’s birthday tie ribbon around chairs and make pony tails out of string.

Make your own fairy crowns:

• Cut the wire to the desired head circumference and twist together the ends to make a circle. • Next, wrap the wire in green floral tape. • When you wrap the tape around the second time add in the flowers and leaves. You can buy flowers from Spotlight or Piggy Bank Busters. • Add your favorite ribbon and use a metre of it for each headpiece. • Finally, tie your ribbon in a loop knot to attach it to the crown.

Party games: Balloon Sandwich 1. Begin by choosing partners and lining them up back to back at a starting line. Place a balloon between their backs so that they must hold it there and not let it fall to the ground (emphasize no hands!). 2. At the sound of a whistle, the pairs must take off in this position, shuffling their way toward a finish line. If the balloon pops or drops, they must return to the starting line for a replacement. 3. The first sandwich to cross the line wins.

Shrinking Island 1. Before play begins, place a few old towels on

Wood burner issues for Grey Power ever the music is playing. When the music stops, each player scrambles to stand on a towel (several players might be able to fit on one towel, depending on its size). Players are allowed to clutch onto a friend so that they can squeeze onto an island. Any player who can’t stand with both feet on an island is out. 3. After each round, an island is folded (to reduce the available standing room) or removed entirely. You may want to switch to a hand towel or a washcloth for the final rounds. The last person standing on an island wins.

The reasonable price and convenience of home delivery makes it perfect for busy families or elderly garden enthusiasts, with the added benefit of supporting a great, community orientated cause. Sparkle White

How safe is teeth whitening? I have been through stringent training and can assure you that Sparklewhite’s procedure is safe, painless and FDA-approved. Sparklewhite is a member of the New Zealand Cosmetic Teeth Whitening Association, which is your assurance that you’re dealing with a trained, qualified and safe cosmetic teeth whitening practitioner who takes pride in the quality of their service and care. Sparklewhite has gone the extra mile by being the first company to introduce the EURO non-peroxide teeth whitening system which is the safest product in the world when it comes to Teeth Whitening. Plus it meets all FDA and CE requirements.

How does the Sparklewhite procedure work? Gums are protected with a gum wax and a special whitening gel is applied to the teeth. A patented blue light is shone on the teeth which starts the oxidisation process. The procedure is very simple and the treatment takes between 40 and 90 minutes depending on the original tooth colour.

How much whiter will my teeth be? Teeth can become two to eight shades brighter, depending on their original colour and level of staining. The procedure will not harm dental work but will work to remove stains and make dentures, crowns and veneers less noticeable.

1hr Cosmetic Whitening was $299, now $169* Thought you couldn’t afford it? Well now you can *When booked before 31 July.

What causes dry skin? Dry skin can be temporary or a lifelong concern. Dry skin can be genetically determined or can be a product of an increasingly stressful lifestyle coupled with continual exposure to the sun, wind and chemicals in the environment. It can also be caused when incorrect products are used on the skin. Dry skin can be characterised by irritation, inflammation and itchiness, a feeling of tightness, a rough, dull look or feel, slight to severe flaking and scaling, fine lines and signs of ageing. What products would you recommend? Dermalogica’s super rich repair is a superconcentrated, heavyweight cream

What kind of services do Dent Magician offer? Dent Magician fix and remove any small dents in your car, such as those caused by a shopping trolley or a car door opening onto a panel and leaving a dent (you know, those really annoying little dents), without the use of paint, bog or filler. They deliver the best possible dent repair for your vehicle, at a fraction of the cost of a regular paint and panel workshop. No paint, bog or filler? What are the advantages of this? Richard Treadgold, a local certified technician, has over 15 years experience on skill based dent repair. No machine is

used, so he is able to repair dents without filling or bogging, and without the need for repainting the area. This means there is no risk of mismatched paint and the car remains original, keeping the same value. Why should I choose Dent Magician? Dent Magician offer an onsite mobile service. It is quick with repairs often taking only 30 minutes so you will not be without your car for days like when you visit a conventional panel and painter. It is also a lot cheaper due to the small amount of time it takes to do the job. Where can I find Dent Magician? Phone Richard Treadgold your local Dent Magician on 027 279 5605.

When is the best time to service my vehicle. At 5,000 or 10,000kms? For older model cars it is recommended to carry out a service every 6 months or 10,000kms. For cars made in 1998 onwards this can be stretched to 15,000kms or annually. Services will vary from service to service, but the key is to regularly service your vehicle. We will build up a history file on your car so we know what to look for, what needs attention next time, and what can be put into your service schedule further down the track. This service history is a great asset to the value of your car.

What is happening with the changes to the WOF inspections? Nothing as yet, but the changes may be coming as soon as October. The proposed changes at the moment will mean that any car manufactured after 2000 will have an annual WOF inspection rather than a 6 monthly one. For people that use the WOF inspection as a "service checkup" we recommend that they also use our service packages like the Service Lite (see our website for details) - specifically designed for vehicles outside of warranty and a fixed price, no surprises general maintenance option.

Rabbits retain league crown Phillip Rollo

Clues

The Richmond Rabbits are champions once again, edging the Stoke Cobras 23-16 to clinch the Shamel’s Cup for the second consecutive year. Having led 22-8 early in the second half, momentum was certainly swinging towards the Stables Richmond Rabbits with centre Callum Smith finishing off some of the big yards made by his forwards, dotting down for two tries early on. But when substitute fullback Talor Simpson-Brown crossed for the Super Cheap Auto Stoke Cobras, a comeback looked on the cards, as the side was finally able to avoid losing possession in a cheap manner. Josh Allen was next to score for the Cobras, putting his side within striking range, but it was all in vain as a late field goal to Eliot Smith was enough to push the margin to seven, securing a Rabbits win. Rabbits assistant coach Deon Charles was over the moon following the result. “It’s such an amazing feeling,” he says. “It’s all sort of thanks to the culture that has been built at the club and the group of guys that we’ve got are just outstanding individuals, not just on the

field. As long as we can keep that nucleus together and add some new blood the club is definitely in good shape.” Deon credited a staunch Rabbits defensive effort for the win. “Yeah we let in a few tries but to be fair the majority of them were out wide and we defended back-to-back sets on numerous occasions so we can be pleased with how they went.” While Callum came in for praise for

Wanderers, after beating Stoke 42-7 on Saturday, will host Nelson in Brightwater in the second semi with the winners of the two games to play each other in the final at Trafalgar Park the following week. The semi-finals for the third division are also to be held this weekend with Marist hosting Stoke at Trafalgar Park from 2.45pm and Tapawera hosting Rangers in Tapawera at 1.15pm.

bASkETbAll: The Fico Finance Nelson Giants lost the NBL final 92-81 to the Southland Sharks in Napier on Sunday night. A pedestrian first and second quarter left the Giants trailing by 24 points going into the third, a lead it could only slightly peg back, meaning the side had to settle for the runners up position for the second time in four years. Nelson MVP Josh Pace, who was the competitions most prolific scorer this season, was named in the All Star Five following the game, a small consolation after a strong season.

FC Nelson calls on Phoenix stars Phillip Rollo Wellington Phoenix stars Andrew Durante and Leo Bertos were in town on Sunday, taking a training session for FC Nelson. A group of youth players were offered the unique chance to train under the nose of the two full-time professionals who are also members of the All Whites. Martin Workman, president of the largest football club in Nelson, says the opportunity came about following talks with Phoenix player Paul Ifill who was in Nelson recently as a guest speaker for a Nelson Falcons fundraiser. While most of the FC Nelson players had to pay for the training, a select few were given funding by the Haven Sports Trust and the Canterbury Community Trust. "We had a few down here to whom money is a bit of a barrier, including a few refugee kids, so we didn't want anyone to miss out on this chance to get some training with them," he says. "They're fantastic with the kids and really down-to-earth guys." It was initially hoped that Paul would make the trip across the Cook Strait too but he had to be excused after being called up to the A-League All Stars team which will take on Manchester United this Saturday. "He was really keen to come down and

FC Nelson juniors with Wellington Phoenix players Leo Bertos and Andrew Durante at a training day. Photo: Phillip Rollo. do a session. Paul, Dura and Leo do some sessions in Wellington so we said lets do one of those in Nelson. But he obviously couldn't come because he's playing Manchester United. We couldn't really say no to that."

Some FC Nelson senior players were also involved in a separate training session. Martin believed the opportunity would boost the relationship the Wellington Phoenix had with other regions around New Zealand, including Nelson.

Heartbreak again for Stoke

"They're keen to build the football development around the country and they're keen to come back by the sounds of it. They're the only professional team in New Zealand and we want our top kids to aspire to the top level."

For the third year in a row Stoke's womens rugby team has fallen just short of a Nelson Bays title and for the third year it was the same team in their way. Waimea Old Boys were crowned champions again on Saturday, stellar defence in the dying stages giving the home side a hat trick of titles. For the final ten minutes, down 15-11, it was Stoke making all the play with wave upon wave of Stoke attack thwarted by some desprate defence. Even when awarded a penalty on their own line, Waimea were only able to make ten metres on the kick to touch and were forced to continue their tackling spree after losing the line out. Waimea coach Kane Hart had nothing but praise for his players after the final whistle.

"Defence mate, defence, we're rapt. For the last three finals I've been a part of, they've been very, very close. Stoke are always a formidable side and although we beat them during the season, that counted for nothing today." Stoke coach Cyril Collier was happy with the efforts of his players but says Waimea played a smart game. "She was a tough battle. We had to get it wide to get over the line and that wasn't happening. Their defence was superb, their backline was up really quickly and that left us with no room to move." Cyril says while there were "obvious emotions" in the changing rooms the players deserve to hold their heads high. "Well done to Waimea, they played a smart game but big ups to our girls for making a really tight, tough contest."

The planned trip to D’urville Island last weekend was cancelled a few days out with, 3m swells and 30 knot plus winds predicted. Nelson College prepare for promotion game Nelson College for Girls A threw out a challenge as the top contenders in Grade 1 when they beat Taylors Wanderers on Thursday night with a convincing win. The game was brought forward to bring Grade 1 and the Premier grade into alignment for the promotion /relegation game. Nelson Girls made every post a winning one as they set out to crush Taylors Wanderers being up 12-3 at the first break. There was no let up in the second quarter taking it 11-4. The sizeable margin enabled coach, Kathryn Orange to rest some key players as they are heading to the New Zealand Age Group in Wellington. The intensity was maintained to take out the game 37-23. With Taylors Wanderers squeezing past rival Cougars 31-30 earlier on Saturday, the result of the Nelson College and Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro game was elementary as regardless of the outcome the college team could not be overtaken at the top of the table. Nelson College were slow to start against sixth seed Richmond, they struggled for flow through court and appeared tentative on the release particularly in their offensive third. They were without their regular centre Nicole Drummond and while young Paige Woodall got the ball away from the centre pass it was second phase where it broke down. The teams were tied at 6 all at the first break. Wing attack, Ellie Bell and Paige switched bibs for the second quarter and the change paid immediate dividends. Ellie was dynamic through court, but more importantly she hit the circle edge for the optimum feed. Nelson increased their lead to 16-12 at the major break. Young shooters Abbey Franklin and Danielle Kerwin come in for some close attention

Carol Cook

Netball Reporter editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz from experienced Richmond defenders Janelle McGregor and Jenelle Strickland, however once they found their rhythm and settled into their work rate they became a force to be reckoned with. Nelson’s defensive duo of Merekara McGuinnetty and Rosa Edwards were a formidable unit, they have formed a splendid understanding of one another’s play which enables Merekara to go out hunting. Their work was made easier by the work done on the outside of the circle by their wing defence - Kea McGuinnetty in the first half and Alice Hazlett in the second. Kea also impressed when she replaced her sister at goal keep for the final stanza. Richmond coach, Deb Vincent made a number of changes for the third quarter with the introduction of Jess Whinui at goal defence and moving Jenelle Strickland from keeper to the goal shoot. The blue team were up to the challenge defensively when they restricted their more experienced opposition to only eight goals in the second half. Nelson’s shooters Abbey and Danielle were on top of their game as they rotated the circle to return commendable statistics. Nelson College will now face Prices Pharmacy A in the promotion / relegation game on Sunday 28 July Club netball takes a break this week with the Nelson Under 19 team competing at the New Zealand Age Group Tournament in Wellington.

Zoe hopes to extend stay with Tactix Phillip Rollo

FC Nelson Sprig & Fern's Nigel Hale controlls the ball in front of a Richmond Athletic defender during the side's 1-1 draw at Jubilee Park on Saturday. The result means FC Nelson remains in second place in the Nelson Bays Football first division with Nelson College in third and Richmond on top, but both FC Nelson and Nelson College have two games in hand. Photo: Andrew Board.

The curtain has only just closed on the 2013 ANZ Championship but Nelson’s Zoe Walker has already pledged her future to the EasiYo Tactix – well, informally anyway. The former Waimea College student was a regular in the Canterbury side during her inaugural season but is now off contract. Despite this, Zoe hopes her first year efforts were enough to cement a spot in the squad long term. “I really loved being in the team this year so Canterbury is somewhere I definitely want to stick around,” she says. “There were a lot of players in the team that were in their first year so if we keep the bulk of us together then it could be something exciting in the future.” Thrown in the deep end on debut, Zoe was marking Silver Fern sharpshooter Irene Van Dyk at the Trafalgar Centre. While the Tactix received a heavy defeat in that game, Zoe put in a credible shift, highlighted by an impressive block on the 211 cap international. With two games played in Nelson this season, you would assume Zoe would have revelled with the hometown crowd cheering her name, but the 19 year old admits it probably made her even more nervous. “I don’t know if I’d say it made it easier, I was petrified but it was cool to have the first game in Nelson.” After playing 13 games, including ten starts, Zoe was clearly pleased with the faith shown in her by coach Leigh Gibbs, even though she was the youngest member of the squad. “I thought I’d just get a quarter here, a quarter there but to get the amount of court time I did was quite surprising. I was very lucky.” And as for the Tactix record of two wins and 11 losses, Zoe admits it was a tough season for the team. “Obviously the disappointment is some-

Zoe Walker in action for Canterbury Tactix this season. Photo: Phillip Rollo. thing that you don’t like to get used to. Even though there were so many challenging times we stuck together as a group really well, supported each other and I think that’s what kept us going. It was definitely challenging, frustrating but you just have to learn from it.” But overall, looking back to where she was last year, struggling to contain the tall timber in an under-21 international against Australia, Zoe believes she has come a long way. “The amount I’ve learnt this year I’m going to benefit from hugely. I went down to watch the Waimea College girls last week and it’s kind of weird thinking that this was me just a couple of years ago. It feels like a lifetime ago that I was playing for school but this has just happened so fast and you don’t really get time to look back at it.” Zoe will now look towards the World Under-21 Netball Championship in Scotland in August. With a few niggling injuries, she has decided to pull out of a national under-23 competition to focus solely on getting to Glasgow.

Many of you will know about my intention to open a school for disadvantaged children. Planning is well underway. My last day of trading at the Wakatau Mini Mart in Hardy Street will be Wednesday 31st July. From Monday 21nd July I will be cooking a curry or dhal and rice meal and Masala Dosa every day at lunchtime. I hope you can all come in to say ‘ bye for now’. All I ask is a donation (about $5) which will go towards financing the school. I also have a growing list of people who have put their names in the book at the front of the shop with a view to visiting the school in India as volunteers.
