A spike in robbery from cars has forced police to walk the streets and check car doors, knocking on the homes of owners who haven’t locked their vehicles. Over the past month Nelson Police has seen a rise in the number of robberies from vehicles, especially around Stoke. But senior sergeant John Price says the majority of those vehicles burgled were unlocked. “People seem to think they can leave their cars unlocked and they will be fine, unfortunately they are not,” he says. Dozens of theft-from-vehicle incidents were recorded by police in the past month so John says police have taken to the street, checking cars parked on the road. “We check them and if they are unlocked we’ll knock on the door of the house its outside and tell the

owner they should think about locking their car if they want to still have their possessions in the morning.” When the policy was announced on the Nelson Police Facebook page last week though, some were not happy with the idea. “Do I have the right to not lock my car door?” wrote Facebook user Richid Whiting. Another, Regan Woodford, posted: “What a waste of time. Why not do something productive with their time instead of worrying about people not locking doors. Idiotic management.” Many of the comments were supportive of police efforts though with Richard Pollard responding to Richid’s post: “Sure you have Richid, just like you have the right not to call the cops when it gets nicked. Or claim on insurance.”

“It’s a sensible public service, but I think what is in the car should stay private.”

“It’s probably a good thing, people leaving their cars unlocked is a bit irresponsible.”

“I think it is a good idea, and probably a good wake up call to people. You can’t complain about having your car burgled if it’s unlocked.”

“If they knocked on my door I’d say it would be a waste of police time, but if people took the precaution to lock their cars, they wouldn’t have to.”

Legal concerns halt NCC policy The haunting ghost of Nelson City Council’s failed gambling policy still lingers with the council pulling its current consultation on issue’s over legal concerns. The council announced last week that its 2012 Gambling Policy has been “discontinued” following legal concerns about the statement of proposal. NCC faced a reversal of its earlier policy after a court ruled in favour of the Nelson Gambling Taskforce which argued the council did not consult with the local community. Since then, pokie machines at the suburb’s only bar have been removed. The proposal will be reviewed and a different version making it clearer what is being consulted on is expected to be re-advertised for consultation in the New Year. Acting CEO Richard Johnson says the council’s decision is to ensure that it is clear what’s being consulted upon and that the statement of proposal is in accordance with the requirements of the Local Government Act 2002, as stated in the High

FROM PAGE 1 John Price says the idea will be beneficial if it gets people to lock their cars more often and rejected any notion that it was a waste of police time. “It’s about prevention, not attending crime. We are much better to spend our time trying to reduce opportunities for crime, that’s a lot more productive. The simple message is people need to care for their property, they shouldn’t leave anything of value in their vehicles and they should lock them.”

Court decision given last year in relation to the council’s 2010 review of its Gambling Policy. “The council believes the current statement of proposal creates sufficient uncertainty over the extent of the proposed amendments that could expose the council to the risk of legal challenge,” he says. The 2012 draft Gambling Policy contained two proposed changes. One, a sinking lid on the number of pokie machines allowed in the city, and two, shifting the TAB policy into another separate policy. Mayor Aldo Miccio says although it would be open to the council continuing with its existing consultation process, the decision to withdraw the current statement of proposal was the appropriate course of action in light of the legal advice received. “Anyone who has submitted to the current consultation will be contacted, giving ample time for submissions to be made. The council apologises to those who have made the effort to have their say, but it’s important the council gets this process right,” says Aldo.

Low turnout for welfare protest

A handful of protesters gathered outside the Work and Income office in Nelson yesterday morning to protest the restructuring of welfare benefits and what they say are “the most radical welfare reforms in recent times”. The Social Security (Benefit Categories and Work Focus) Amendment Bill was introduced in Parliament last month, and includes changes that will require beneficiaries to be drug tested, and move mothers back into the workforce when their second child turns a year old. Kieran Kelly of Upper Moutere says although he was not currently a beneficiary, he was “standing up in solidarity” to back those who he believes will be adversely affected by the changes. “I’m here to protest against reforms that are attacking the victims of society, which will continue a National policy of creating an underclass

in New Zealand.” The protestors held signs that read “Stop the war on the poor” and “Arguing women’s rights is not archaic.” He says although the turnout for the protest was low, he still believes people are willing to stand up for themselves. “People have had enough now, and they are in a mood to fight back.” Spokesperson for the Nelson Civics Education Action Group Sharyn Black says changes to welfare requirements will see beneficiaries margainalised as a criminal liability. “The women’s gender argument is not archaic, and the drive for all to be in employment is in total conflict with the reality of the workplace, the government’s inability to retain industry and employ people in New Zealand and our concept of work.”

Local lifts Bathurst trophy Andrew Board Pulling into a Sydney airport car park last week Nelson’s Bruce Monro thought his weekend’s Bathurst motor racing adventure was over. But then he noticed the bloke in the car next to him looked rather like the race car champion that had won the Great Race less than 24 hours earlier. “I got as close as I could during the prize giving ceremony at Bathurst,” says Bruce. “I never thought a few hours later I’d be shaking his hand and holding the damn thing. It was just magic. The whole weekend was magic.” Bruce, who works at McNaughton’s Furniture, and his wife Sandra attended the 30th Bathurst 1000 in 1992 and he says he’d spoken for years about going back for the 50th edition of the V8 Supercar race, dubbed the Great Race. He says there was a pretty big difference between this year and last time he went. “They are so much faster, so much nosier, a much larger crowd. But the atmosphere is still the same and the rivalry is still the same.” Bruce – who once owned a rally car and has helped with local races for years – wasn’t cheering for either Holden or Ford, he was hoping the Kiwi drivers would do well, no matter what car they drove. Unfortunately the Kiwi drivers failed to fire and Australian’s Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell won the race. The Monros left Bathurst early the day after the race to avoid the crowds and made

Freeview problems ‘minor’ Your Community Newspaper

Andrew Board

It hasn’t been smooth sailing for many local television viewers who have recently switched to the digital Freeview system with electrical problems, fade outs and retuning by networks keeping some viewers without a picture at all, much less a clear picture. Warren Harding, of Johnston Dick and Associates, which manages the transmitters in Nelson on behalf of the government admitted there had been some “minor” issues with the new system but insisted most users probably wouldn’t have noticed. At least two local viewers have though, contacting Nelson Weekly complaining about the fade outs and lack of communication around retuning. One user, who did not want to be named, says he was told by Mediaworks – owners of TV3 and C4 – that a technical upgrade three weeks ago did not go according to plan. It meant that those on the Freeview aerial network needed to retune their televisions to see the channels. But the message informing users was displayed on the bottom of TV3 and C4 programming – not able to be seen by those that needed to retune. The problems do not affect Freeview users with a satellite dish,

Sky TV users or those on the old analogue network. Darren Richards of Nelson TV and Video says he has had some complaints over the past few weeks over a range of issues. “Most certainly there has been a variety of issues lately. It seems to be a bit of a fickle system here in Nelson,” he says. “It’s especially bad if it’s during Coronation St, we get plenty of phone calls if that happens.” Other issues have been fade out of the signal which comes across from Blenheim and power outages at the Mt Campbell tower, the largest transmitter in the region. But Warren says those issues are being addressed. “There were a couple of significant power failures at Mt Campbell about two or three weeks ago and that was a prolonged outage. So that was something people would have noticed but work on getting more power to that site is happening now.” Warren and Darren both said users need to come to grips with the new technology, especially learning how to retune it. “The main advice for people is to get used to the idea that TVs are computers now and anyone who’s had a computer knows that you need to reboot them from time to time,” says Warren.

Nelson ready for masked parade Police and organisers of Friday night’s More FM Carnivale and Sonic Live Zone in Trafalgar St are sending a strong message to young people to respect the alcohol ban. Nelson Arts Festival director Sophie Kelly says her team is working closely with Nelson Police and other services like St John, Hype and private security to ensure people can enjoy themselves in a fun, friendly and safe environment. “Services supporting the event won’t be shy in turning people away if they’re caught drinking or behaving badly,” says Sophie. “We ask that people respect the fact that this event is for the whole community to enjoy. If there are any problems, it could jeopardise any future events. “This is Nelson’s biggest community event that for one day each year allows people of all ages to come together to celebrate on the streets of Nelson. It’s critical we keep everyone safe.” Nelson Bays area commander inspector Steve Greally says police would have a significant presence at the event, with zero tolerance to liquor ban breaches. He says Youth Aid, community constables and traffic police had been brought in to assist and the crime control cameras would be monitored. “We’ll also be working closely with Maori wardens and community patrols. This is a family event and we want people to be

safe and have a good time. If anyone is behaving in a disruptive way they will be swiftly dealt with.” Inspector Greally encouraged parents to ensure they knew where their kids were. The More FM Carnivale starts at about 6.30pm with street-entertainment, food stalls and free live bands until 11pm. From 5.30pm, the Masked Parade winds its way around the inner city from Montgomery Square along Bridge St, Trafalgar Street, Hardy St, Morrison St, Selwyn Pl and Church St. Event organiser Michaela Blackman urges spectators watching from the sidelines to throw on a mask and get into the spirit of the event. “Our volunteer marshals will be interacting with the crowd and may even do a little Irish jig with selected individuals. Don’t be shy. Go for it,” she says. After the parade, people can take on Giants players’ Sam Dempster and Bronson Beri at a basketball game in Trafalgar St, organised by Nelson’s newest recreation service The Truck. If there is wet weather, the Masked Parade will be held the next day on Saturday 20 October at 5.30pm and the Carnivale will be cancelled. The Masked Parade and More FM Carnivale are part of the Nelson Arts Festival, which is running until 28 October. For the full programme of events, visit www. nelsonartsfestival.co.nz.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: My friend suggested I get a boarder, because I am struggling to pay my rent and bills as a single parent. Is it a good idea or will it cost me more? A: If you have a room available, a boarder can better your financial situation, because they will share the costs of rental, power, food, phone and water. You can have two boarders paying less than $247 per week each, without their income affecting your benefit, tax or family assistance. Here are some tips for a successful boarding agreement:  Get your landlords approval  Check out your boarders references to ensure they will be safe with your children  Work out a reasonable rate for room, power, water, internet, phone and food. I suggest between $160 and $220 per week  Write up an agreement between you and your boarder. Check the tenancy tribunal website: http://www.dbh.govt.nz/tenancy-tribunal for a copy of a flat/house sharing agreement. Include cost of board, frequency of payment (weekly or fortnightly), bond required, what they will get for their money  Take a bond of at least two week’s board and deposit it with the Tenancy Tribunal We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Local students take centre stage Nelson’s best student musicians will hit the stage this week to showcase their talents. Schools from all over the region have put forward their best acts to perform at 1903 Square on Stage One, a special stage designated to student performances during The Arts Festival. The array of talent ranges from Kapa Haka groups to rock bands, and the kids have put a huge amount of practice in to prepare says Stoke school choir teacher Kirstin Groomes. “We’ve put two terms of practice in, it’s an awesome opportunity for the kids to perform in front of a crowd outside of the school community. It’s great to have an

event where they can perform on a stage and feel that it’s the real deal” Hampton St School principal Don McLean says the stage is “a great celebration of what kids can do. The talent is excellent and it’s great to show the community the music curriculum in schools.” Wakefield school student Finn De Hamel was nervously waiting to play in his school band ‘Red Hot Eagles’ and said he was excited to play in front of a crowd and it was “really cool to represent my school.” The event will run through to Friday the October 19 with daily performances to the public from different schools including Lower Moutere, Hira and Waimea College.

Retired teacher still learning at 87 Sinead Ogilvie

After 40 years at the blackboard most teachers would be ready to put away the books and call it a day, but 87 year old Gladys Kelly of Nelson is far from ready to retire. Gladys has taught in and outside of the classroom since she was 17 and is now dedicating the latest chapter of her life to teaching. After spending years in schools as a specialist primary teacher for children with learning difficulties and offering home teaching lessons, Gladys is continuing her passion for children and adults with literacy issues by writing and publishing her own books. The books are published with large print and bright colours and are based on fun and simple subjects such as motorbikes, and rescue helicopters. Gladys visits local places like fire stations, and motorcycle shops to get her inspiration and learn about the topics before she writes her stories. On a trip to the Nel-

son fire station last week Gladys inspected the jaws of life tool used for cutting open cars, and learnt about the breathing apparatus fire fighters use, all things that children are fascinated with and would like to read about she says. Taking photos and seeing things in a real environment helps her understand the subject of her books, and she says the local businesses are happy to have her visit. Gladys says she wants to use her years of teaching to help others, and says her books would particularly help children who struggle with reading. “It is a common difficulty, and a bit of extra support would help their self esteem.” Gladys says she hopes to provide an affordable service and teach students from her home. “Not everybody can afford $40 an hour lessons, I just want to be able to help those with disabilities who cannot read.” Gladys prints and publishes the books herself and with the help of a friend.

Huge support for breast cancer Locals rallied to make sure pink was not only in fashion last Thursday night, but that it also raised plenty for the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust. The spotlight was shone on breast cancer while women spent the night pouring over collections of clothing and makeup, drinking bubbles and showing their support for the Pink is InFashion fundraiser last week. Local businesses Shine, Cardells and many others donated products and vouchers to the evening’s auction, and spot prizes were given out throughout the course of the night. The event was held at Jays Fashions on Bridge St, and owner Karen Jordan says hosting the fundraiser was fantastic and she was impressed with the turnout. “I think there are around 70 here, it’s a huge turnout, hosting it here at the shop just gets the cause out in the open, and it’s great to see local’s showing their support.” Around $2220 was raised from

Car Company and co rattle buckets for refuge

Andrew Board

Staff from the Car Company were joined by two Makos and volunteers from Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge last week in raising more than $1000 for the nonprofit organisation. During the month of October the Car Company is doing everything it can to raise money and profile for the women’s refuge and the work it does in the Nelson community. That pledge went to the streets last week as staff rounded up a couple of Tasman Makos and took to the streets with buckets. Organiser Tracey Black says she was “astounded” with the response. “The people of Nelson just blew me away. I couldn’t believe how giving they were. Some started to walk past and as soon as the heard the women’s refuge bit, the number that actually stopped and came back and donated was really good. One lady said to me that she’d gladly donate because she wished the women’s refuge had been around for her mum.” The Car Company has also organised a quiz night, other street collections this Wednesday in Trafalgar St and Thursday

its support of sport but wanted to show it does much more in the community than just sport sponsorship. “We are passionate about sport but for a long time Shane [Drummond, Car Compnay owner] has also supported all of these other groups and doesn’t really tell anyone about it. So we wanted to work with one organisation and really make a difference for them. The women’s refuge operates on a shoestring budget and being ex-police I’ve seen first-hand what they do and I really think, sadly, it’s an organisation that works with so many in our community and in every suburb pretty much.” She says Vernon Fredericks and Bryce Heem from the Tasman Makos were fantastic and even went into shops to seek donations. “We were blown away by how great they were, we even had shop managers tell us how great they were.” Trudie Brand from the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge Service says the support from the Car Company is fantastic. “I was pretty gobsmacked actually when I heard the total raised. It is awesome that people were so generous and that the Car Company has got behind us.”

which will bring in the Christmas season with fun and festivity on Sunday December 2. With vibrant floats and entertainment this year’s parade looks to be another huge success and organiser Huup Waagen says he is planning some exciting aspects and prizes for the public to look forward to. “It’s always a beautiful parade, it’s a great community day, this year I hope to have as many animals involved as possible, and there are heaps of spot prizes to be won.” The parade will take off at the same time as previous years, at 1pm from the Cathedral steps and follow a route down Trafalgar St to Founders Park, where the Christmas Carnival will be held afterwards. This year’s prizes for parade floats will be awarded to best effort, and most creative and those interested in entering a float need to register by November 20 to ensure a good spot in the lineup. The parade is put on by the Nelson Santa Parade charitable trust and attracted thousands of people last year.

Whitebaiters are the ‘biggest liars’ Phillip Rollo Forget fishermen exaggerating the size of their catch, the region’s whitebaiters hide theirs in the car so what they have caught remains a mystery – even to the Department of Conservation. A Brightwater man caught a whole season’s worth of whitebait in just six days and says he had the “best September ever” during what has been a “phenomenal season”, just two months after DOC said whitebait was declining across the region. Trevor Timpson, who has been fishing for whitebait in Golden Bay for 15 years, has kept records during the past eight and believes whitebait are certainly not on a decline and he is not the only one with similar comments. Trevor says he does not know where DOC got its initial facts and figures from after catching 54.5 kilograms of whitebait in less than a week – up to 16kg more than he usually catches during 27 days. “They’re certainly not getting them from whitebaiters because whitebaiters lie through their teeth anyway,” says Trevor. “I’ve fished in the same spot on the same days every year and my tallies have never altered.” Trevor’s thoughts were [it’s been the] echoed by another whitebest September baiter, at Rough Island, ever. who did not want to be named. The man, who – local whitebaiter. has been whitebaiting for most of his life, says the current season is right up there with 2010. He went on to say that it was no surprise that DOC was under the wrong impression because “whitebaiters are the biggest liars.” He knew of some whitebaiters that would hide whitebait in buckets in their cars so people would think there was nothing around and the river banks would remain unpopulated. The unnamed man caught 11kg of whitebait on Thursday and word was quick to get around with 12 different whitebaiters lining the banks of Rough Island at high tide on Friday. Sharon Rogers, of Stoke, goes fishing for whitebait twice a week near Rabbit Island but says her biggest catch of the season was just one pound and a half. “Just enough to feed the family and give them a pattie each,” she says. Sharon labelled whitebaiting as “just luck of the draw”. Gina Anderson, who lives in The Brook, was out whitebaiting for just the second time this season and was unaware how others had fared. Gina says Nelson whitebaiters have their own “possies” and it was hard to claim better spots. “Down there it was just first in, first served and the younger ones looked out for their elders.” The whitebait season closes on November 30.

Entrance ready in a fortnight Motorists driving north will have easier access to Saxton Field in two week’s time when a second entrance is officially completed. The new entrance will allow better traffic flow into, through and out of Saxton Field. At peak times on a Saturday, Saxton Field can become an extremely busy facility. By opening another entrance, it is hoped all users will benefit during those busy periods.

The cost of the new entrance is $850,000 and is jointly funded by both councils. The current 50km/h speed zone on Main Rd Stoke will continue until the work by Higgins Nelson Contractors is finished on October 26. A third entrance on Champion Rd is currently recognised on the Saxton Field Development Plan but funding is not currently included in Nelson City Council’s Long Term Plan.

Coupland’s has recipe for success

WHEELIE FUN: Eise Tijsen, 5, of Nelson gets help from his father during the obstacle course at the Wheelie Fun Day at Saxton Field. The Wheelie Fun day was visited by hundreds of kids who got their first opportunity to be part of the Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle Festival. The Wheelie Fun day was not restricted to bicycles with some children bringing scooters and skateboards while there were also segways and blokarts available for use. It was hosted by Sport Tasman. Coupland’s Bakeries Nelson is a small team that punches well above its weight, says store manager Vicki Palmer. “Since 1997, we have been providing the community with great tasting, fresh food,” she says. “We’ve got a massive range in store including fresh bread, pies, gateaux, biscuits and everything you need to cater your next party. “Keeping in the party theme, our huge Christmas range is due in store any day. Alongside a great assortment of all the traditional favourites, there are some exciting new additions to the range such as gift tins and hampers. With everything that’s on the go at the moment, Coupland’s Nelson is definitely not your average bakery.” Vicky says the team is passionate about providing the freshest, great tasting bread around. “Our loaves are baked and delivered fresh to the store daily.” There are now five ranges available in store, including a value daily range, 700g premium range, delicious eurograin and hearty southern plains varieties. “If that’s not enough, we’ve just recently launched a new artisan range which includes delicious meatlovers and hawaiian pizza breads. We’re popular because our customers know that we offer delicious food along with great value,” she says. The community can expect a

warm welcome and first rate, personal service every time they shop with Vicki and the team. “We enjoy our customers, they come in and we take the time to chat with them. It’s their store really”. Police on cannabis hunt

Police are hoping for a little help from the public as the annual hunt for cannabis plants ramps up this month. Detective sergeant Brett Greer says police were out gathering intelligence on growers and had already stymied one grower’s plans in Marlborough. He says police were asking rural property owners and those who were out tramping, hunt-

ing or fishing to keep an eye out and report any suspicious activity. “We know the growers are now heading out to get their crops established so we’re asking for the public to assist by letting us know if they see anything. Apple entrance for airport visitors Waiting for loved ones to arrive at Nelson Airport just got a little sweeter. The airport, along with Waimea Nurseries, last week planted fruit trees near the cycle and walking paths around the airport for people to enjoy as part of its Nelson Airport cycleway enhancement. Nelson Airport Ltd installed cycle assembly clamps in its baggage claim area and planted fruit trees so that cycling and walking visitors can join locals and “graze as they go”. The project has seen nearly 50 fruit trees planted along the airport cycleway. The trees include several varieties of apple, pear, plum, feijoa and even nectarines. Nelson Airport CEO Kaye McNabb says Waimea Nurseries provided advice while planters included staff from Nelson Airport Security, the cafe, the rescue fire service and the Nelson Airport Ltd office along with family members. “It was a great mix of people from children to the semi retired all pitching in and then gathering for the drink and a bite to eat at the fire station,” says Kaye. Nelson Airport Ltd is a Heart of Biking partner with the Nelson Tasman Cycleway Trust.

Having recently performed with rock band “The Adults” and iconic NZ rock front man Jon Toogood, they are now rehearsing for their annual Christmas candle light chapel concerts. They are truly “living the life” and embracing their versatility. “La Vida means L i f e - t h a t ’s us!!” For more information about their up coming performances or to book them for your personal celebration, visit them at www. lavidaquartet.co.nz or follow them on FaceBook.

If you missed out last time, get ready for a weekend of swinging and grooving with The Flaming Mudcats this weekend. The Auckland band will perform at the Play House this weekend and are set to bring their special blend of blues and funk back to Nelson for what they “guarantee to be an exhilarating weekend of blues bliss.” Bassist Sean McCarthy says they are excited to join forces with special guests and local Nelson band “Boogie Train” saying “There wasn’t much blues to be heard when I lived in Nelson a few years back in the mid 90s, it’s great to see bands like Boogie Train down here performing and taking it to the people.” The Flaming Mudcats performed to an enthusiastic crowd at the 2011 Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival, and are pleased to return to the Nelson region says Sean. The band will be performing hits from their debut album ‘Gave You What You Wanted’, and will

also perform new work from their upcoming album which is due for release later this year. After touring the South Pacific and New Zealand last year, the band earned rave reviews with a recent write up on muzic.net.nz dubbing the band “up there with some of the late greats of 1950’s American Blues” and are self described as “equally at home in down-home shuffles, New Orleans funk, spacious minor blues, west coast swing, pounding four-on-the-floor and rollicking Texas shuffles.” Sean says the band “shares a deep passion for blues music in all its forms” and stands out from the crowd with its “massive range of influences, and the sheer virtuosity of the musicians.” The Flaming Mudcats are giving away four tickets to their show and have CDs up for grabs to readers of the Waimea Weekly and Nelson Weekly. The Harbour Master’s • Whilst on leave I learnt of considerable activity at the port. I returned briefly for the arrival of the Maersk Olivia, a 238m container vessel that set a new LOA (length over all) precedent for Port Nelson. • During the last fortnight seven container vessels, a log ship, a fertiliser ship, the usual cement ships, two tankers, one fuel and one methanol, a car carrier, the supply vessel Go Enif departed, twenty seven fishing vessel movements occurred, the tug Kuratai arrived for repairs, Port Nelson’s two tugs were repaired on the slipway and repainted as required. The tug Ngahue from Wellington filled in whilst either tug was on the slip. A very busy and successful time for the port and its community. • Now here is a true story you wouldn’t want happen to you. Beware of expired flares. A good friend of mine decided to demonstrate how to set off a parachute flare, somehow he thought it was a good idea to do so in conjunction with other fireworks going off at the time. Well, there is the first offence - it is true it is an offence to set off safety flares without permission and proper co-ordination. However it got worse for my mate. Sure he was his usually meticulously careful self and asked the kids to “move back a bit”. He peeled off the plastic wrapping – always a good idea, stood with his back to the wind, in order for the flare to reach maximum elevation, and pulled the toggle release. Disaster, the six year old flare fizzled and exploded in his hand. The parachute part flew thirty metres maybe and started burning a hole in the neighbour's roof. Emergency department for the hand and serious gunpowder burns, emergency action for the neighbour's roof. I think the story speaks for itself - if your flares have expired, RFD will both replace them and take care of the old ones for you. Don’t let them off unless in an emergency! • Experience, what is it worth? To some people it’s the lessons they have learned the hard way and they can then help others avoid the process. For others it’s an excuse to keep pushing boundaries. It’s just what others are remembering from last year when the outboard broke down AGAIN, without the service between seasons As the weather continues to be unsettled and unpredictable be careful out there.

Readers push for Weekly puzzle This week we’ve launched a new feature to our newspaper – puzzles. Since we started Nelson Weekly more than two years ago we’ve fielded dozens of requests for a crossword and sudoku and while we’re far too busy for such fun we’ve yielded to reader demand and included a new puzzle section. We understand that most of you like to take your time reading Nelson Weekly and that you see the time reading us as quality time. So we think the addition of a crossword and sudoku will enhance that experience. We would also like your feedback

on our puzzles. Do you like them, would you prefer another puzzle and what you would change? Adding these puzzles to your local newspaper is about reacting to reader demand so we want to make sure you actually like them. Don't blame us if you can't finish them though. It is intended that there will be a quick crossword each week and sudokus will rotate from easy, medium and hard every three weeks. Any feedback would be appreciated and can be sent to editorial@nelson weekly.co.nz. Thanks, good luck and have fun. - Editor.

Solution to last week’s puzzle

In her 50s, after decades of smoking and with two hip replacements Robyn Scherer doesn’t have the kind of credentials you would expect for a gym junkie, but she reckons she doesn’t use a normal gym. The office worker says she was in trouble, her health was poor and mobility in between hip operations was tough going, but Robyn's found her ticket to good health and says it comes in a piece of equipment that is only found in one other place in all of Australasia. TRX sounds like a spaceship or a dinosaur more than the jungle gym Robyn describes, but the mix of boxing and working the suspension system where you use your own body weight to do a range of exercises, and keeping a good diet, has worked Quick wonders Clues for her. “I’m relatively young to have both hips replaced Across but1I had severe (6) arthritis and I was given the opAbscond portunity to have(8) the operations fairly quickly 4 Aubergine via9theDistinguished Public Health(2,4) system. change my lifestyle and joined the gym. I also gave up smoking after the second hip operation – after 40 years of being a pack a day smoker.” Not only did she join the gym but Robyn took on a personal trainer, Jason Hulena. After three years working out with Jason, she says she is fitter, more mobile and healthier than she's ever been. She is currently doing the Fat Attack Challenge at the Wairua Body Coaching Systems, which is a mix of boxing and working out on a TRX. Jason and his brother-in-law Greg set up Wairua about 8 months ago and they have just installed the Synrgy System. It’s one of only two of its kind in Australasia and Greg says he and Jason are excited about the equipment and the results they are getting. "We get people from all backgrounds, all shapes, all sizes and everyone can use it. It's a great workout." Robyn certainly agrees. "It's the best thing I've ever done. I feel great and I feel fitter than I ever have."

Dun Run done by the rain The “weather gods” have been kind to Nelson Events over the last twenty years with only two of its 100 plus trailrunning events being seriously affected by inclement weather and an alternative on the day course needing to be implemented. Saturday’s Subway Dun Run became the third event to suffer that fate. With 200mm of rain forecast to fall in the Nelson Ranges, right in the territory where running action was to happen, a decision had to be made, as any rescue operation if needed in Nelsons “backwoods” could have been more than testing. Instead an approximatley 13km route from the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary to Third House and return became the substitute. While some “whimped out”, 83 took up the challenge to get their early

morning endorphin fix and make it to the finish line. Kim Hogarth was there first, with both he and Luke Vaughan (Christchurch) breaking the hour while Simon Leaning was 52 ticks over. Anne Rose (Titahi Bay), who has Golden Bay parentage, was the women’s pacesetter having just over a minutes advantage over Shelley Holmes when she crossed the line, Tabitha Dickson (ChCh) a few seconds adrift. With its 2012 trailrunning calendar now complete, Nelson Events now put their energies into next month’s RunMahana which already has over 500 on the startline. Full results or for more information on RunMahana, visit www. nelsonevents.co.nz.

Injury concerns cloud semi-final appearance

Phillip Rollo The Tasman Makos will be forced to head south with a depleted squad for its ITM Cup Championship semi-final against Otago, with Robbie Malneek the most notable casualty. The Nelson stalwart, who recently celebrated his 100th appearance at a provincial level, has played his final game of the season and could be sidelined for the next 15 weeks after coming off the field during Saturday’s 42-10 loss to North Harbour at Trafalgar Park. Prop Campbell Johnstone and fullback Tom Marshall were also under an injury cloud but a decision would be made on the pair later in the week. Tasman has made two trips to Forsyth Barr Stadium already this year with mixed results. The Makos scorched the Razorbacks in preseason before a poor second half display saw them lose 39-13 in round nine, despite starting with a hiss and a roar. Assistant coach Leon MacDonald says the side has got to be confident heading to Dunedin. “At the beginning of the season we set the goal of winning the championship and we’re in a position where we still have that opportunity, so we’re happy to still be in the fight.” There are some similarities within both squads with off-field financial issues restricting Otago

to picking a team solely of local club players. Tasman went through a similar rebuilding phase two years ago but was now reaping the rewards with players like Shane Christie penning a Super Rugby contract with the Crusaders and prop Sam Prattley pushing closely for his first professional gig. “Otago and Tasman can be pretty proud of the seasons that we’ve had but we definitely won’t be patting them on the back. This is a big game for us and half the reason they’re playing with such passion is that at the start of the year they didn’t know if they would be playing or not.” The squad has reviewed the tapes from Saturday’s upset loss. Leon says it was a combination of thinking a week too far forward, knowing they were already into the semi-finals, and a lot of poor individual performances. “We have a lot of tired, wounded players so it’s nice to have a six day turnaround, but seven or eight days would have been better. Let’s hope the motivation of playing in a semi-final can make those injuries heal a bit quicker.” If Tasman can win the match against Otago, it would then play the winner of Counties Manukau and Southland for a shot at being promoted into the premiership tier of the ITM Cup. The match in Dunedin kicks off at 7:35pm on Friday.

The Stoke Eagles will look to fly high at the NBS Labour Weekend Men's Fastpitch Open while the competition's only other home-town softball team will have different objectives as it looks to upset its neighbours in the opening fixture. The tournament kicks off on Friday evening with the Eagles and the United Titans set to clash in the first round robin game. The fastpitch tournament has been hosted by the Eagles for the past three years and draws a number of the country's top clubs to Saxton Ballpark. There are expected to be around ten to 15 current Black Sox playing over the four days. Nelson Softball chief executive Derryn French, who is also in the Eagles' squad says his youthful side should hold its own against teams featuring some New Zealand representatives. He was targeting five wins as a gauge of success. "We've got a very young side and I expect in some instances we will struggle while in others we should do pretty well," he says. "A lot of it comes down to the pitching and how Brandon Peck who is in from Vancouver will go. If he steps up and starts to dominate then certainly we will be in the mix." The Titans are a little more "unknown," according to Derryn. "Part of their agenda will be the fact they are competing and they're getting amongst it." Jeremy McIlroy and Giuseppe Lagrutta add some quality to the squad and if the team's pitching can be consistent they should not be taken lightly. The all-Nelson clash is current-

Poneke Kilbirnie will be one of the favourites to take the top honours, having been in the top four of the New Zealand club national championship in as many years. PK have five Black Sox in its roster. Parklands Christchurch United will have Regan Manly on the mound, strong hitter Gareth Cook and Daniel Milne -- all three are part of the New Zealand set-up. Sunday night will also feature a home run derby where two players from each team will

slog it out. That is scheduled for 5pm. Derryn is hoping to entice local softball fans to check out what is the top annual tournament to hit the town. "The calibre you're going to see is definitely up there and it's a pretty good tournament." The final will be held on Monday at 2pm. Nelson Softball was also able to confirm that it would be hosting a Black Sox internal tour on November 14 and 15, prior to the world championship in Auckland in March. The Black Sox are likely to play a South Island selection and will do some coaching in local schools.

William Rush from Nelson-Hinemoa Croquet Club competes at the 74th NZ Golf & Silver Mallets tournament held at the Richmond Croquet Club on Sunday. The winner of the gold mallet was Dennis Bulloch of the Nelson-Hinemoa Club with Geoff Duckett of United Croquet Club Christchurch claiming the silver mallet. Over the years this tournament has been held in high regard and has some bearing on selections for representative teams. The next competition is the Golf Croquet Labour Weekend Handicap Tournament. Jumping success There were no signs of winter cobwebs as a 70-strong group of local show jumpers took to Marchwood Park in Motueka with plenty of speed, style and accuracy on Sunday. Participation-wise, this was the largest opening competition in a number of years for the Nelson Area Show Jumping Group with numbers high in all 17 classes. Classes were spread between horses and ponies and then separated by the height of the obstacles. The best of the local registered riders were youngster Emily Hamer of Hope in the

registered pony classes riding She’s Spot On and Moonwalker the Grey; Pamela Milliken of Brightwater largely dominated the show hunter classes on Z Final Straw and Viking SL, placing in each class she competed in. Nelson Area Show Jumping Ground spokesperson Linda Cotton, who also won two classes on Sunday, says she was stoked with the turnout, with competition running until 6pm to cater for the large amount of entries. “There are heaps of good riders in Nelson but yesterday they all came out of the woodwork,” she says.

The Nelson Royal 10th grade football team are the South Island champions with three other local teams making finals on the weekend. The results capped off another successful tournament held at Saxton Field with more than 450 young footballers taking part. Nelson hosted the 10th grade and 11th grade tournaments with the 12th grade competition being held in Blenheim. The 11th grade tournament, which is known as the Jack McKnight Tournament, featured 17 teams from across the island. Blessed with fine weather over the first two days, Nelson Bays Football CEO Clive Beaumont says the

tournament went well and continues to grow. “There were certainly no complaints. Every match was refereed and I couldn’t tell you how many matches were played because there were an awful lot. The weather on Saturday morning was a challenge but the pitches held up well and each team played in good spirits.” The Nelson Royal team beat Nelson White in the 10th grade final; before a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat saw the Nelson Royal 11th grade team lose its final against Canterbury, having tied 1-1 at full time. The Nelson Royal 12th grade team also made a South Island final, losing 4-1 to Can-

terbury Red in Blenheim. Nelson Royal 11th grade coach Nick Brooks says his side was drained after two consecutive matches featuring extra time. “The boys worked incredibly hard to get there and I think by the end there was just nothing left. I’m really, really proud of the way the boys played, they gave everything they had.” Nick was unsure why Nelson Bays Football was so strong at a junior level but says it was probably due to the high participation levels and the good coaching on offer amongst the grades.
