A spike in robbery from cars has forced police to walk the streets and check car doors, knocking on the homes of owners who haven’t locked their vehicles. Over the past month Nelson Police has seen a rise in the number of robberies from vehicles, especially around Stoke. But senior sergeant John Price says the majority of those vehicles burgled were unlocked. “People seem to think they can leave their cars unlocked and they will be fine, unfortunately they are not,” he says. Dozens of theft-from-vehicle incidents were recorded by police in the past month so John says police have taken to the street, checking cars parked on the road. “We check them and if they are unlocked we’ll knock on the door of the house its outside and tell the
owner they should think about locking their car if they want to still have their possessions in the morning.” When the policy was announced on the Nelson Police Facebook page last week though, some were not happy with the idea. “Do I have the right to not lock my car door?” wrote Facebook user Richid Whiting. Another, Regan Woodford, posted: “What a waste of time. Why not do something productive with their time instead of worrying about people not locking doors. Idiotic management.” Many of the comments were supportive of police efforts though with Richard Pollard responding to Richid’s post: “Sure you have Richid, just like you have the right not to call the cops when it gets nicked. Or claim on insurance.”
