Graffiti attacks hit ratepayers We pay two-and-a-half times more than Wellington residents Andrew Board Cleaning up graffiti costs each Nelsonian $2.38 a year, more than double the cost to Wellingtonians. Alec Louverdis of Nelson City Council says the cost of fixing graffiti in the city has risen steadily over the past five years and is now at an all-time high. It costs ratepayers around $100,000 per year to clean up graffiti and another $100,000 to fix vandalism. The figures come as the city counts the cost of another attack last week in Tahunanui. The culprit has not been caught say Nelson Police and the owners of fences along Tahunanui Dr and Annesbrook Dr say they are fed up with having to clean up the mess left by others. wheelchairs mobility scooters walker/canes electric beds ands hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

In February Alec reported to council the impact continued vandalism to council-owned parks, toilets and fences was having on costs. He says the cost to rectify vandalism is 65 per cent of the council’s entire repair bill. In Wellington graffiti costs each of its residents around $1 a year, in Dunedin resident’s fork out just 15 cents each year but in our biggest city, Aucklanders pay about $3.20 for the repair work. Police say they receive around 150 reports of graffiti each year with that figure peaking in 2008 at 259. In the first quarter of this year 24 cases have been reported, compared with last year’s 22. WWII vet a Poppy Day vet too After 40 years of selling poppies from the exact same spot you wouldn’t be surprised if Nelson man Alan Griffiths was ready to retire – but you would be wrong. Alan says he loves setting up his stall outside Fresh Choice Nelson and selling the poppies for the Nelson RSA. The World War II veteran says

he gets to meet all sorts of people from his stand and he hears all sorts of stories. “People come up to me and say ‘oh my dad fought here or did this’. It’s great.” Poppy Day is held this Friday with all the funds collected staying here in the Nelson region for the returned servicemen medical fund. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont

says there will be 24 stands out in the Nelson region on Friday, from Stoke to Nelson. Alan says he has been at the same site since the late 70s and wouldn’t give it up. “It’s nice and sunny and I get to have a chat with people. It’s good and the girls here have got to know me and bring me out a coffee as well.”

He died at the scene. BEST BEACHES: The Abel Tasman National Park has been nominated as Leading Beach Destination in Australasia in the World Travel Awards. It will compete for the title against such icons as the Far North’s Ninety Mile Beach, Aitutaki in the Cook Islands and Bondi Beach in Sydney. BIRDS HALT FLIGHTS: Unsettled birds from neighbouring Sand Island caused flight disruption at Nelson Airport over the Easter weekend. CEO Kaye McNabb reported that two incidents of people disturbing large numbers of oyster catchers from the Sand Island to the west of the airport. The disturbed bird population swirled over and landed on the airfield making conditions temporarily unsafe for aircraft. Both incidents were man made, the first involving a kayaker going ashore, the second involving two people with a small dog arriving from a small outboard.

Women turn out in force for expo Nelson’s Women’s Lifestyle Expo was the perfect excuse for a girl’s day out, a chance for women to enjoy and pamper themselves, while taking in the latest trends and styles, say organisers. Trafalgar Centre was transformed last weekend into a women’s wonderland. From the moment you walked through the doors there was a feast of interactive sites, showcasing the latest products or cutting edge fashion. There were new hairstyles to be had, makeovers and manicures. A wellness group doing massage was also one of the many companies doing seminars and you know it’s a success when the organisers and Expo staff are putting the demonstrations into practice. “The girls in the office

went to a seminar to learn Indian head massage, and we have all been treating each other in the office,” says Christine Woodhouse, the event organiser. “It was such a lovely weekend. Lots of people from Nelson came and had a fantastic time at the expo. It was very well attended, and I think the numbers were up a little bit on last year, because the weather was great and people came out and thoroughly enjoyed it,” says Christine. The goal of the expo was to inform women about some new products and trends coming out. “It was about creating a nice environment for women to have a girl’s day out and just thoroughly enjoy themselves,” says Christine.

Q: I asked to put a gift on layby at a local shop. The assistant asked me to sign a receipt and said I would be charged a layby fee. I told her that I thought that layby did not incur fees. I was assured that this was normal. What do you think? A: When you ask to put an item on layby, an agreement is made between you and the retailer. You will be required to pay 10-15% deposit, and agree to pay a certain amount every week until the item is paid off and you can take the item away from the shop. There is no fee for this. The retailer can ask to charge storage if the item is large but must ask you first. You can ask the retailer to reimburse this fee.

Voting feels good, because then you can forget about it It stuck out like a sore thumb. I knew what it was straight away and after two weeks of ignoring it on the kitchen table I finally opened the envelope and cast my amalgamation vote. Frankly, I’m sick of hearing about amalgamation, sick of the TDC v NCC hate and sick of the pettiness surrounding it. I mean pulling out billboards? Illegal flyers? Public spats between elected officials? It just goes on and I think most of us are over it. I can’t count how many stories I’ve written, edited or read on the subject so when the envelope arrived I couldn’t be bothered, I’d had enough, amalgamation it was now invading my home!

Despite my tardiness, I never really contemplated not voting but I just didn’t want to face it, not then anyway. But the – err, let’s call it passion – the passion shown by the aforementioned officials meant I could not live with myself if I didn’t. Call me a weirdo, but the effort both the pro and anti camps put in to the whole thing couldn’t be ignored, it would be cruel if we were all so apathetic that none of us bothered to vote after all that effort. Through my job I’ve spent a fair bit of time with most of the players in the amalgamation debate and seen a new side to a few

LETTERS

TO THE EDITOR

The Nelson City Council once again intends to use “smoothing loans” to artificially keep the lone rate increase at an “average” of 4.6 per cent. This will add $18 million to the council’s debt for just the first year of the proposed ten year council plan. Councillors are congratulating themselves on this 4.6 per cent increase which is a slap in the face for the Government who signalled rates increases need to be kept at or below the inflation rate. In fact many people’s rates will increase well above this so-called average. Nelson rates have increased faster than anywhere else in New Zealand over the last ten years, an average of 13 per cent a year. Reckless spending on non essential cosmetic projects are going to push many ratepayers out of their homes. There is no reason why we cannot have a zero per cent increase, its just a matter of the council living within its (our) means. Stop raiding our pockets. Errol Millar, Nelson. The Nelson City Council agenda for April 3 notes that the “smoothing loan” council proposes to keep the next financial year’s rate increase at an “average” of 4.6 per cent will add $18 million to the council’s debt for just the first year of the ten year council plan. Councillors are patting each other on the back for bringing down the rate increase. In fact many people’s rates will increase well above the socalled average. Nelson rates have increased faster than anywhere else in New Zealand over the last ten years, an average of 13 per cent a year. This is unsustainable for most ratepayers. Ratepayers must make clear to councillors and the mayor that the increase in expenditure must stop. Reckless spending on vested interests is going to push many ratepayers out of their homes. There is no reason why we cannot have a 0% increase the next financial year. Dan McGuire, Nelson.

of them. Who would have thought Richard Kempthorne could be so fierce? Who would have thought Aldo Miccio could stand not being liked? Who would have thought Tim King could get so angry and who would have thought Judene Edgar could be so feisty? (oh, we already knew that one). The thing I like about their efforts – for right or wrong – is their passion for our region. I don’t believe those against it are so because they think they would lose their job just like I don’t think those for it are trying to somehow steal Tasman’s resources.

I think it’s great we have people who care about our future, whether you agree with their vision or not. So I voted. I voted because I also care. Good on Aldo for sticking his neck out there for what he believes in and good on Richard for sticking up for what he believes in. Now it’s time to grab that envelope and vote for what you think will be best for our region. Whatever way you go, you’d no doubt be as glad as I am that it’s over and we can finally find out if we will merge or not. Voting closes this Friday. No time for hospital, dad delivers daughter at home

Rene and Amelia, owner operators at Café in the Vineyard are pictured with their children Mika, Conner and Zoe. Rene and Amelia from Café in the Vineyard are celebrating their second anniversary at the local café and they’re still loving every day. When they took over at the cafe in the midst of a recession, they realised that to make the venture a success would require plenty of hard work backed up with consistently great service and outstanding food. This recipe for success worked well and they have been busy with happy customers coming through the doors, many of who return on a regular basis. Rene and his team in the kitchen topped it all off by winning a 2012 NZ Beef and Lamb Award, the fifth time Rene has been recognised in these awards. Rene and Amelia acknowledge that running a successful business is definitely a team

effort and they’d like to thank their fantastic full time staff – Wendy, Greg, Tom, Courtney and Hannah, together with a wonderful team of casual staff, for their dedication. “We’ve also had tremendous support from our suppliers and the winery who have constantly offered great advice and shown great patience over our first two years,” says Rene. The Café is ideal for private dinner functions such as business meetings, private functions and weddings and offers a choice of set menu or buffet meals. Their lunch menu is available daily from 11-30am to 2-30pm with popular platters available until 4pm. Organic fair trade Sublime coffee, award winning Waimea Wines and Sprig and Fern Beer on tap are available all day.

Mia Redwood was born in safe hands last week – her father’s. James Redwood can go one further than the majority of other dads, delivering his own daughter at his Richmond home. When his wife Sarah Redwood started getting contractions at 5:40am last Saturday morning, it was decided that she’d better get to the hospital immediately. James called the midwife and said to meet at the Nelson Hospital. But then everything seemed to happen in fast forward for the Redwoods as Sarah went into labour just moments later, before they could make it out of the house. The baby was coming and it was coming now. James was going to have to deliver his new baby daughter himself under James and Sarah Redwood with their two daughters Ava, 2, and his own roof. SPCA brings desexing bus to town An animal desexing bus is coming to the Nelson SPCA, targeting low or no income pet owners. The SPCA Mobile Clinic offers free desexing operations to animal owners, so it can prevent unwanted animal births. SPCA centres all around New Zealand work hard to prevent unwanted births by desexing all incoming animals before they are adopted out. For members of the public whose pets did not come

through the SPCA and as a result are not desexed, the mobile clinic offers a free option. This will be the fourth time the caravan has come to the Nelson region. It did not visit last year. SPCA Nelson manager Donna Walzl says any low income earners that are interested must apply now because spots are filling up fast. “We just want to reduce the number of unwanted animals that come into the centre. It

gets more expensive for them and it certainly doesn’t help us,’ she says.” The majority of dog spaces had already filled up, but there are plenty of opportunities for cat owners to apply. The mobile clinic will target crossbreeds only. The mobile clinic will be in Nelson from May 3 to 22, operating six days a week. To book your spot at the mobile clinic, please contact the SPCA on 547 7171.

BIZARRE BAZAAR: Altrusa International Inc of Nelson members Anne White, left, and Judith Wastney are preparing for the Bizarre Bazaar at the Stoke Memorial Hall this Saturday. The bazaar is an opportunity for crafts people to sell their accumulated and surplus goods used for quilt making, dressmaking, toymaking and other crafts. Handmade items will also be on sale during the fundraiser for Magic Mums, a project run by Altrusa to give mothers of special needs children a weekend break. The award-winning project is held every second year by the service group and will take place later this year. The bazaar is open from 10am to 3pm this Saturday. Photo: Andrew Board.

Voting set to close The poll on amalgamating the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils is set to close this Friday. The official result of the election is due to be announced on Saturday. Voting packs were sent to registered voters in Nelson and Tasman with a fifty per cent majority needed in both regions for the proposal by the

Local Government Commission to go ahead. Nelson mayor and the man who started the process, Aldo Miccio, says he believes the vote will be close and is unsure on how it will fall. Those who haven’t sent their vote back yet are urged to get it in the post by Thursday. If voters choose to amalgamate the two councils a new election will be held in October.

Local people with local knowledge Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory. As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born. Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens showroom in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.

When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen. Ask our friendly staff for details.

Inspiration aplenty for young film makers

Young Nelson film makers taking part in a workshop hosted by Guy Ryan (second from right) at the Victory Community Centre last week. Photo: Andrew Board.

Hospital needs gear back Nelson Hospital is desperately seeking the return of therapy equipment loaned to patients when they leave hospital. Short-term loan equipment is identified by a handwritten number and included shower stools, toilet frames or commodes, bed loops, and crutches. Clinical Service Support Directorate, service manager Allied Health, Hilary Exton says the equipment is

usually loaned out to people for six to eight weeks. “We have a distinct shortage of items in our store at present and ask the community to help us get these items back into circulation for other patients to benefit from them.” Equipment can be dropped off to the Allied Health Store on Braemar Campus between 8am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.

Six young Nelson film makers got tips by one of the best in the business last week. Guy Ryan is an award winning documentary maker and now runs the Inspiring Stories Trust, aiming to inspire the next generation of film makers. His teachings are about more than just making a movie though, his aim is to encourage people to make the world a better place and how film can be an effective way to do that. His workshop will travel to two dozen centres throughout the

country but started at the Victory Community Centre in Nelson last week. Guy says this is the second year he has run the workshops and the results from last year prompted him to run it again. "It was so awesome to see how inspired they got and what they then went on to do. We had one girl from Murchison in particular who was so excited and has since entered her film into a film festival. It's exciting seeing the excitement in these young people."

All about timing Each week leading up to the Nelson Wedding Show in early May Nelson Weekly is printing the nine finalists of the Jens Hansen Love Story competition. This week we have Tim and Nicky's story.

For some reason one day I bought a bridal magazine, just like that, out of the blue. I was standing in the supermarket and it just seemed to be calling my name…so I bought it. Tim and I hadn’t been together that long and even though we’d talked about getting engaged and married I didn’t think it was going to be happening any time soon. We were lying in bed that night and I just had to say – “Babe, I bought something today”, and I pulled out the magazine to show him. Awkward! Then he replied – “Well, I bought something too’, and he reached

into his bedside drawer and pulled out a small box…with a ring in it! WHAT?!?! He had been waiting for the right time to propose, and the weekend to Wellington hadn’t worked out quite the way he had planned - in fact everything went awry! The weekend to Golden Bay didn’t work out either - saying I was a little tired and grumpy is an understatement. Little had I known he had been carrying the ring around for a few weeks waiting for the right moment. And that moment was then. It was perfect. It would also explain why my Dad kept asking if I had any news! We are now happily married and have just got back from our much anticipated, but slightly belated honeymoon to Antarctica.

It’s lights camera and all action as Dramatix Theatre Development Trust’s ‘Lest We Forget’ ANZAC Commemoration is shooting into the short film genre. “Auditions are complete, key crew positions filled, the storyboard is finalised and filming is in full swing,” say organisers. In three years the niche theatre group has given over seven thousand Nelsonians the opportunity to experience a unique, fully interactive event that educates, informs, and inspires. This year’s edition of the award winning production is titled Life in the Trenches, 1917, but it won’t be like a silver screen production about guns and glory. “Lest We Forget does not seek to glorify war, its purpose is remind us why we live in peace,” says the team. Dramatix Theatre Development Trust was established in 2000 to provide an environment to encourage, produce and promote quality local theatre, to make theatre works accessible to a wide selection of the community and to challenge

and encourage participation at all levels of theatrical endeavour. The flagship production of the Lest We Forget series won the Wakatu Incorporation award for Heritage culture at the 2011 Environment Awards. ‘Life in the Trenches, 1917’ uses characters from TJ Ramsay’s ‘Passchendaele, 1917’ a SOUNDZ commission winning musical drama, first performed in 2009 during Nelson’s now iconic ‘Lest We Forget’ event, and many of the Passchendaele cast are now in the film. “I’m very impressed already by the skills being shown by our now expanded theatre family in adapting to this new medium. It proves again, just what anyone can do when offered a new opportunity.” says TJ Ramsay writer and director. The set is housed in Founders Park Energy Centre with filming already underway. The set will take on a double life as the 2012 Lest We Forget event ‘The Nelson Pine Industries Theatre of War Trench Experience’ for the public during April 21, 22 and 25.

The Harbour Master’s

diary

• Last week saw three container vessels and a general cargo carrier, a car carrier, a fuel tanker, a methanol tanker, the cement ship, a super yacht Platinum, seven fishing vessels keep the port busy. • Happy Easter – the fish were biting and I managed to catch one- and that’s where it started to go wrong. With the teenagers complaining after ten minutes they hadn’t caught anything I was distracted by trying to ensure they could when the wind came out of nowhere. It changed in the space of a few moments from a 15 knot westerly to 30knots from the south and a nasty short sharp sea. Whilst I knew

this probably wouldn’t last long it was long enough to frighten my son and daughter and cause the mal-de-mer for them both. The engine was faltering, the halyards were caught up the mast, not too proud to ask for help, I did and we were back inside the shelter within an hour with two grateful, tired teenagers. There’s several points to this confession – watch the weather, wear lifejackets, call for help early before real trouble starts. Give yourself the surety of enjoying your sailing, fishing another day. If in doubt – don’t go out

The Johnnys off to USA The world’s first and only all-girl Johnny Cash band, Nelson-based The Johnnys, are off to California to the fourth annual Johnny Cash Music Festival in Ventura in June. Vocalist and lead guitarist Suzi Fray (aka Johnny) says the last few weeks have been like a dream. “I’ve spoken on the phone to Johnny Cash’s daughter Cindy who said she was honoured to have The Johnnys playing her dad’s music and keeping it alive,” she says. “I still can’t believe we could be on the same stage as Wanda Jackson, this year’s headline act, often referred to as the Queen of Rockabilly and the first woman of Rock and Roll.” Their hard driving Cash covers with their unique female (but not girly) sound have won them a reputation at Nelson venues, with shows now invariably selling out to capacity crowds. Suzi says there’s just one hitch about getting to California and that’s cost. “The Johnny Cash Music Festival is a fundraiser for the Coalition to End Family Violence and Food Share, Ventura’s food bank, so performers are donating their time,” she says. “If we want to accept this amazing invitation, gain some in-

P&M Fireplaces Innovating to produce cleaner, more efficient wood fires has been a successful strategy for New Zealand’s largest wood fire manufacturer, Metro fires. The latest is a fire that can heat a 220 square metre home, deliver hot water via a wetback, and achieve emissions less than a third of the national environmental standard – using renewable resources and at a lower cost per kilowatt than most alternatives. “Energy efficiency is a key concern among consumers, and wood delivers clean, renewable heat at around a third the cost of fuels like gas or electricity,” says Murray Sinclair from P&M Fireplaces. The Ambie Plus is also Metro’s cleanest burning wood fire, achieving a tested emission of under 0.5 grams of particulate per kilogram of fuel burnt – with a wetback fitted. The national environmental standard is 1.5g/ kg. “Firewood is a very cost effective fuel, and thanks to Kiwi ingenuity, it’s more efficient than ever before. And as well as the aesthetic pleasure of a wood fire in the home, they provide added security in the event of power cuts or other events, says Murray.

TIP #2: Installing motion sensors in areas of your house where lights can be frequently left on e.g. hallways, toilets, kitchens. TIP #3: Existing recessed down lights in your ceiling can now be replaced with more energy efficient lights and some can even be covered by insulation. TIP #4: By installing a grid-tie solar power system you can reduce your power bills and even sell excess power back to the power companies. TIP #5: Make sure your hot water cylinder has an insulating blanket around it (especially for older cylinders),. This can be installed yourself. Bright start for FC Nelson

FC Nelson Sprig & Fern’s Davi Maciel attempts a shot at goal against Richmond Athletic. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

FC Nelson’s two teams took maximum points in the opening round of the Nelson Pine Industries men’s division one, setting up a mouth-watering clash in round two, when the two teams from the same club face each other. The Steve Bignall-coached FC Nelson Sprig & Fern found some late rhythm to claim a 3-0 victory over Richmond Athletic at Jubilee Park. Brazilian winger Davi Maciel opened the scoring in the second half, after dictating the majority of the away side’s attacking plays. Nathan Halford caught Richmond napping when he scored the second not long after, when a Richmond player was deemed offside when he found himself on one on one with the keeper. Solomon Island Under-23 representative Moffat Kilifia then sank the killer blow, nabbing a goal before the full-time hooter. Nayland College’s Bjorn Van Ginkel was one of the standouts for the youthful looking Richmond Athletic side, along with captain Michael Campbell. FC Nelson Fuji Xerox won the round’s only other game 4-1 against AMI Nelson Suburbs first XI. Nelson College had the bye. Only five teams will challenge for the Nelson Pine Industries men’s division one title this season after the Marlborough Mariners withdrew from the competition. A host of players heading overseas and work commitments for their head coach were believed to be behind the decision. FC Nelson’s teams will face off at Guppy Park this Saturday from 3pm.

All White Jeremy Brockie attended a holiday programme at Richmond Athletic during his week in Nelson. He is pictured above with Logan van Deegest, 11, Scott Morris, 11, Jamie Wilson, 10 and Zoe Sharp, 10. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Brockie has plenty to ponder The United States has been revealed as a possible destination for out-of-contract footballer Jeremy Brockie. The All White forward, who will become a free agent next month after completing a two-year spell with the Newcastle Jets, was back in his hometown of Nelson this week for his stag do. Jeremy has two offers on the table from current A-League clubs and there is some interest from Asia. There is also interest from

While he remains tight-lipped on who exactly that franchise is, Jeremy says his next career move will revolve around the 2016 FIFA World Cup. “I’m going to be factoring my decision around still wanting to be in a league that is going to help to stay in the All White fold.” Jeremy attended a holiday programme at Richmond Athletic during his week.

WEDNESDAY 18 April TUESDAY 17 April 2012 2012

Nelson Tasman Netball 2012 Teams have been formed and players are set to take their positions on the courts for another action packed season of Netball for 2012. Players, coaches, umpires and supporters will be cheering on over 200 teams who have been registered through the Nelson Netball Centre to compete at Saxton Fields, both at the sports complex and on the indoor courts at the Stadium. The action began for the season at the Geraldine Hodgson preseason club tournament, the perfect opportunity for players to dust off their shoes, clip their nails and get back into competitive play in preparation to hit the courts for the 2012 season. Thirty-seven teams competed in three grades. Prices Pharmacy Men swept the top position in A Grade, winning all of their six games, while Nelson College for Girls Senior Squad took out B grade and Garin

College triumphed in C Grade. Opening night for the premier grade will be at Saxton Field on Thursday 26 April from 6pm, with the top teams from our region playing every Thursday following. Family, friends and netball fanatics can take the opportunity to see the top netballers in Nelson take to the courts and battle it out. The whistle blows for Saturday netball on 28 April, signalling the beginning of the senior, collegiate and junior teams’ season, which continues through until mid-September. For the up-and-coming netball stars, Future Ferns Netball nurtures the skills and passion of children aged 8 to 10 years old. The emphasis is placed on participation and enjoyment, motivating the players to be involved and learn safety and team skills appropriate to their age and ability. play on Saturday, with their season beginning on May 12, while years 4 and 5 begin on May 16, playing their season on a Wednesday night. Even before joining the Future Ferns, youngsters can be involved with the Fun Ferns. The name says it all; open to both boys and girls, the programme is run to get kids excited and interested by playing fun games and teaching basic netball skills. Children between the ages of 4 and 8 are welcome and at just $2 per week attended, it’s the perfect way for them to meet new friends and be given encouragement to be active and social. Fun Ferns runs Tuesdays 3.30 to 4.30 beginning May 29. Trish Lowe has held the position of Development Manager for Nelson Netball Centre for the past nine years and over that time she has assisted, mentored and inspired countless of our youngsters and their coaches. Trish encourages some of our younger netball players to take up umpiring positions and provides them with the support and training necessary to advance in the position, with many still active in umpiring games at a higher level.

Nelson Tasman Netball 2012 Trish is available to help with training sessions at all levels, providing assistance with skills training and support for coaches. If you are currently coaching a team and would like a bit of advice or assistance, don’t hesitate to call her at the Nelson Netball Centre. There are many ways to be involved with netball, whether you’re interested in playing at a high competitive level, are doing it with friends as a social activity, or are taking a supportive role for a friend or family member. The Mixed Social League runs alongside the Premier grade season, with games held on Thursday nights at Saxton Stadium. This is a great way to get fit and active with your friends, or a perfect opportunity to meet new people and have fun as you do. The mixed social league is open to men and women from age 13 up. Thursday night is also when the Masters League is played, a perfect way for women over 35 to retain the fitness and vibrancy that team sport encourages. Like all organisations, Nelson Netball has a huge number of people and groups who volunteer behind the scenes to make every season a great one. The groups include Nelson Netball Coaches Club, which aims to provide all coaches at the centre with development oppor-

tunities and running workshops for coaches. It’s a rewarding way to be involved and support players in your family or community. If you are interested in becoming involved in coaching, contact Trish. Those who are happy remaining in a spectator position can consider becoming a bench official. Pathways are provided by The Bench Officials group to take a position which involves time and score keeping and statistics at local premier level all the way up to national and international level. The Nelson Netball Umpires committee actively promotes and develops umpires and anyone interested in umpiring can contact them through Nelson Netball. Nelson Netball is privileged to have the use of Saxton Fields to train and play. Over the last few years the facilities have been upgraded, providing well surfaced and fenced courts, and sufficient indoor courts to allow for games to be played regardless of weather. Saxton Stadium boasts five courts that are of a national standard and is the venue of choice for any national level games played in our region. The entire facility is smoke free for the comfort of players and spectators. For any information about local netball, visit www.nelsonnetball. co.nz or contact the Nelson Netball Centre on 547 4450.

Hard-working Stoke falls short against table-toppers

Nelson's Robbie Malneek gets the ball away before the Stoke defence gets to him. Photos: Jonathan McKeown.

Stoke division two halfback Motoi Yokoama clears Stoke division two prop Lindsay McPhillips the ball from the base of a Stoke ruck. dots down after stepping several players.

Scratching for a front row against Nelson an hour before kickoff is not the ideal build up, but Stoke's senior A side still managed to put in a strong performance against the season's early favourites. The evergreen and sprightly Ron Walker once again fronted up to provide a cornerstone to one side of the scrum, and turned on his usual solid performance. Ray Packer moved to the unaccustomed position on the loose head and foraged with some surging runs. Jon Sharpe completed the front row after being taped together, but this certainly didn’t affect an outstanding performance in the number 2 shirt. Stoke were always under pressure especially at scrum time, but Jarrod Aberhart at number 8 was equal to the pressure securing the ball on the back foot and giving the Stoke pack some go forward. Stoke took on Nelson up front early on, with great effect putting Nelson under some real pressure. Nelson called on their outstanding individual ball players Robbie Malneck and Mitchell Scott who both provide a touch of class to cross the white line. Nelson then scored again to lead Stoke 19 – 3 at the break. An unfortunate penalty after half time put Stoke back under pressure and Nelson scored again. Stoke showed some real resilience and composure during the next period to string together phase after phase before crossing the line, with a well deserved try to Jarrod, closing the gap to 10 – 24. Nelson scored twice again to take the final score out to 34 -10. Stoke coach Gary Alsop says his side worked hard throughout the game. "We showed some genuine

team spirit and grit. At times we demonstrated some constructive phases of continuity, creating space for the outside backs," he says. Brenton Connell and Phil Asi were strong with ball in hand. Talor Simpson Brown and Chris Little looked for work. Matt Fallon produced a solid game at full back. Jacob Beleski was accurate with boot and provide some fine touches. Matt Gaines worked relentlessly behind the pack. Ben Douglas and Steve Kerr were tireless in providing a solid platform Lofi Ula arrived at the 60 minute mark to make some inroads into the Nelson defence and Stu Tunnicliff led from the front and defended relentlessly. In the curtain raiser Stoke's senior B side played Murchison on Saturday. Stoke started well in the first half and things were looking good for an easy victory, but after scoring three great tries in the first half stoke started to tire and Murchison scored right on the stroke of half time. The second half started as the first half finished. Murchison played to its strengths in the forwards and scored three tries in the second half. All were pick and drives from inside the five metre line. Stoke displayed great defence at times but the visitors were relentless. Stoke kept its nose in front with the help of two penalties to Ant Holder until in the final seconds of the match when Murchison struck the lethal blow by scoring in the corner to put them two points up. Tries went to captain Lindsey McPhillips, Ant Holder and Alex McCarthy. Ant also kicked two penalty goals and three conversions. Aaron Dempster was voted MVP.
