Graffiti attacks hit ratepayers We pay two-and-a-half times more than Wellington residents Andrew Board Cleaning up graffiti costs each Nelsonian $2.38 a year, more than double the cost to Wellingtonians. Alec Louverdis of Nelson City Council says the cost of fixing graffiti in the city has risen steadily over the past five years and is now at an all-time high. It costs ratepayers around $100,000 per year to clean up graffiti and another $100,000 to fix vandalism. The figures come as the city counts the cost of another attack last week in Tahunanui. The culprit has not been caught say Nelson Police and the owners of fences along Tahunanui Dr and Annesbrook Dr say they are fed up with having to clean up the mess left by others. wheelchairs mobility scooters walker/canes electric beds ands hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

In February Alec reported to council the impact continued vandalism to council-owned parks, toilets and fences was having on costs. He says the cost to rectify vandalism is 65 per cent of the council’s entire repair bill. In Wellington graffiti costs each of its residents around $1 a year, in Dunedin resident’s fork out just 15 cents each year but in our biggest city, Aucklanders pay about $3.20 for the repair work. Police say they receive around 150 reports of graffiti each year with that figure peaking in 2008 at 259. In the first quarter of this year 24 cases have been reported, compared with last year’s 22. WWII vet a Poppy Day vet too After 40 years of selling poppies from the exact same spot you wouldn’t be surprised if Nelson man Alan Griffiths was ready to retire – but you would be wrong. Alan says he loves setting up his stall outside Fresh Choice Nelson and selling the poppies for the Nelson RSA. The World War II veteran says

he gets to meet all sorts of people from his stand and he hears all sorts of stories. “People come up to me and say ‘oh my dad fought here or did this’. It’s great.” Poppy Day is held this Friday with all the funds collected staying here in the Nelson region for the returned servicemen medical fund. Nelson RSA president Barry Pont

says there will be 24 stands out in the Nelson region on Friday, from Stoke to Nelson. Alan says he has been at the same site since the late 70s and wouldn’t give it up. “It’s nice and sunny and I get to have a chat with people. It’s good and the girls here have got to know me and bring me out a coffee as well.”
