Happy runners celebrate happy Christmas
Almost 200 runners, scooter riders and walkers dressed in their best Christmas costume and took part in the annual Jingle Bell Jog. The event was held on Sunday morning and saw the crowd of mostly families make their way from the Trafalgar Centre to Tahunanui Beach, along Rocks Rd. The Hampson family and Costley family won the joint top prize for best costumes and others came dressed as super heroes, plum puddings and plenty arrived dressed as Santa. Organiser Averil West, of Nelson Events, says the jog was not about athletes but about families and the entry fee was a donation to the Heart Foundation. She says $700 was raised in total from the entry fees. “It’s just a great fun day and the costumes were brilliant.”
Trafalgar Centre closed, now what?
A damning engineering report could spell the end for Nelson’s only major indoor events centre, but the city’s mayor is adamant if it does go it will be replaced. Nelson City Council announced on Friday that the Trafalgar Centre would close immediately after a report it commissioned stated the loss of life in the centre would be “high” if there was a moderate earthquake. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese says that left wheelchairs mobility scooters walkers/canes electric bed/hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

the council with little option but to close the centre. “The risk of loss of life is high. The only appropriate response to managing this risk is to close the centre to public use immediately.” Now the immediate focus for the community is: where to from here? A decision on the future of the centre, which was built in the early 1970s, and received a $7 million upgrade in 2009, will

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz be made early next year with the council to discuss it as early as this Thursday at an urgent meeting. The options are to strengthen the centre at varying costs depending on the strength, or pulling it down and
rebuilding a new centre at a new location. Rachel confirmed it would be highly unlikely for a new centre to be built on the existing land if they made the call for the Trafalgar Centre to come down. That is because if it did come down part of the reason would be due to the land being prone to liquefaction in the event of an earthquake.

FROM PAGE 1 But she said there is still a long way to go before any decisions about the centre’s future will be made. “There’s been a significant investment in the building over the past ten years so to walk away from that would be a pretty hard call. We’d have to have some sound engineering reasons to do that and another location [to build on] because we have to have an events centre in central Nelson in my view, it’s essential.” The cost to strengthen the Trafalgar Centre could range from $2 million to $30 million. The centre over the past year has hosted music concerts, basketball, netball and volleyball games, expos, dinners, trade shows and conferences. It is the only venue in Nelson able to accommodate many of those activities. Rachel says the decision means event organisers have some certainty and the council will work with groups who have booked the cen-

The Nelson Giants – which has been based at the Trafalgar Centre since the 1980s – says it will relocate to Saxton Stadium for the 2014 season, which will need to set up some temporary seating. The closure is also likely to spell the end of the proposed Joseph Parker boxing fight that
was scheduled for March next year and could force trade shows and expos to other venues or out of the city. The Canterbury Tactix netball team was also due to play two games in the Trafalgar Centre next year and the popular Mayors’ Christmas Dinner has now been moved to the Nelson College Hall. Although the impact of the closure will be huge on the community, Rachel says deciding what to do next will be more “challenging”. “My personal view is that the events centre needs to be in central Nelson. It’s absolutely critical that it remains in the vicinity of the Trafalgar Centre or if not, closer to the CBD. Saxton Stadium is an interim option only.” She says there are other earthquake prone buildings in Nelson that don’t need to close but the fact the Trafalgar Centre has a large span, is sitting on land prone to liquefaction and has a capacity of just under 4000 people made its “risk profile” unique, which meant the council had to act.

Tahuna wins its fight against double lanes After protesting down Tahunanui Drive earlier this year, the local community has won its battle to have the clearway outside four businesses removed. The layout of the intersection on State Highway 6 has been a major issue for business owners and residents who said the clearways at the traffic lights raised significant safety concerns and made access to shops difficult. Last week the New Zealand Transport Agency and Nelson City Council agreed to a moratorium of four years on the use of the southbound clearway meaning it will become full time car parking until revisited in 2017. It has also made the decision to make the north side, which operated as a part-time clearway in peak hours and car parking at all other hours, a left turn only lane. Concerns were made in August during a mass protest, calling for the authorities to relook at the intersection. They have been addressed by both NZTA and NCC, who say the clearway was originally introduced to assist with the ongoing traffic issue at the intersection during afternoon peak travel times, however they now ac-

Mayor Rachel Reese, who supported the community’s concerns prior to being elected, says she is pleased with the agreement because safety issues have been a high priority. “Tahunanui residents and customers of the local shops have expressed concerns about safety for some time and I’ve been troubled about the configuration of the highway at this junction and how it’s used by motorists and pedestrians. The moratorium is a good solution that gives everyone a chance to take a break and reflect on what will be best for the local community and for commuters for the long-term.” Tahunanui Community Centre spokesperson Judy Robinson says the community

Photo: now believes they have “been heard” by the council and NZ Transport Agency following the community march and public forum held earlier this year. “We are delighted to know people will soon have a safer intersection and have safer access to essential services.” Harley’s Pharmacy owner Andrew Harley says the removal of the clearway has made a major difference and his customers are particularly happy, especially the elderly. “The major problem was always safety. People were using the clearway as the race track of Tahunanui.” He says he’s noticed a few people ignoring the arrow but said the quick response from all involved was fantastic. Nelson City Council will be working on a long-term parking solution for the Tahunanui commercial area.

Crusaders ‘the perfect gift’ HUb To bE pUllED DoWn: The former Hub building on New St will be pulled down towards the end of February, confirmed the Nelson City Council last week. The building was deemed earthquake prone during the council’s testing of the buildings it owns. Once the building is removed, the site will be used for car parking but could be used for other purposes in the long term.
A ticket to the biggest game of rugby in Nelson this summer sounds like the perfect Christmas gift to Shane Drummond and he’s hoping a few others are thinking the same way. The Crusaders are playing the Highlanders in a Super 15 pre-season game in Motueka this Waitangi weekend and tickets for the big game went on sale last week. Organiser for the event, Shane Drummond, says buying for fathers and husbands can be tough and he’s sure this will
go down a treat. “It’s a really useful gift that will get people excited, better than a pair of socks,” he says. He says the game – which has been held in Motueka twice before – is a family event and he’s hoping plenty of kids will also be getting a ticket or two for Christmas. “It’s a huge event and right on our door step, I know of one guy who went and bought tickets for all his grandparents for Christmas.”
Tickets are expected to sell out for the game, especially those in the covered grand stand. Shane urges everyone to get in quick to secure their tickets for what will be an entertaining game. Tickets are available from Nelson School of Music, Theatre Royal, Nelson i-Site, New World Nelson, Richmond Mall, Hampden Hotel Murchison or online at www.makos.co.nz or phone TicketDirect on 0800 224 224.
nEW HomE ExEmpTion: The mortgage lending restrictions implemented by the Reserve Bank has caused a dramatic reduction in enquiry for new houses since coming into effect in October this year. However the RBNZ last week announced a move to exempt new home builds from the rules. Jennian Homes director Simon Collett says the exemption is a welcome move. SUTEr UpgrADE confirmED: As the long awaited redevelopment of the Suter Gallery approaches, Nelson City Council has committed to joint project management of the Suter redevelopment construction phase. The $12 million redevelopment is being equally and jointly-funded between the council and the Bishop Suter Trust and is due to begin next year.

No love for interactive ‘love’ panel I love Nelson because… “of the views”, “it’s cool”, “I just love it” and “it is not Auckland”. Those were some of the responses to the “I love Nelson...” interactive board at Lions Playground behind Tahuna beach. But it wasn’t all good. Random swear words, genitalia and other offensive drawings have shown some Nelsonians also love to vandalise, which has seen it removed less than three months after it was erected. The interactive blackboard gave passersby the chance to finish off the sentence ‘I love Nelson because…’ by writing what was intended to be positive answers in chalk obtained from Mr Whippy. However, the result was sometimes the opposite, and one of the region’s most popular summer destinations was fronted with a sign covered in offensive language until it was rubbed out by offended members of the public. Last week it, and the art work on the other side which was done by school students, was removed after what Nelson City Council called a “trial basis”. “Unfortunately the ‘I love Nelson’ blackboard was repeatedly vandalised with graffiti including offensive messages and has now

The blackboard had been attacked with paint and this can happen in areas where the public is not present during evenings.” Nelson City Council would not reveal what words they found offensive, citing that “due to the offensive nature of the material we will not be repeating it”. “It was only a minority [though]. Families were enjoying it.” The Urban Art Board project cost $835 and the material was designed to be recycled. The boards are currently in storage.

City’s wood burner policy to be reviewed
Elsa Balantyne, Norma Miller and Pat Wycliff celebrating at the Stoke Seniors Christmas function on Wednesday. More than 150 members of the senior social club attended the traditional Christmas dinner, which is held each year by the organisation to celebrate the end of the year with ‘fun, food and fellowship’. Wood burner rules could be relaxed in Nelson city by next winter says the man charged with reviewing the current rules, but he is adamant that it will not be at the expense of air quality. Nelson City councillor Brian McGurk, who chairs the council’s planning and regulatory committee, says a review of the city’s wood burner standards will be conducted next year and while a relaxing of the current rules may come into place there needs to be a good hard look at the plan first. “Basically what we want to do is have a look at the science and check the pollution levels, where they are and what they are and what’s damaging the air quality. There were assumptions made at the time [when the policy was introduced a decade ago] about the science so we just need to check that.” He says investigations around low emission wood burners, air shed
boundaries and people who have missed out on having a wood burner because of the passed deadline, are all issues that will be looked at. “[But] we don’t want to roll back the gains we’ve made in air quality. You only have to look at other cities and towns to see how far Nelson has come in the past ten years. There’s been a big improvement,” he says. While work on the review will start in the new year, Brian says he is unsure if any changes will be made before next winter. “We want a really clear direction well before winter but I wouldn’t like to put a timeline on it. I know there’s a huge amount of interest and I’ve already been bombarded with people making submissions so I’d imagine there’ll be a huge amount of public interest so we want to get it right. It certainly was a hot topic in winter.” The council will be calling on submissions to the review next year.

Drunk driver had baby on board Fifteen people were caught driving above the legal breath alcohol limit on the weekend, but police are concerned that a “large number more” were above the reduced limit to be implemented next year. Police across the region, and Marlborough, West Coast, breath tested close to 7000 drivers on Friday and Saturday nights. One of the 15 drivers that were above the legal breath alcohol level was driving a 15 month old baby, while another was double the legal limit.
Operation commander inspector Jenni Richardson says it is concerning to note that a large number of people were detected driving in excess of 250 mcg, which is the new breath alcohol level proposed to be introduced next year. Those drivers were all warned of the consequences when the law change comes into effect. The Australasian Operation Unite was combined in Tasman with another road policing operation focussed on country roads. The operation targeted all alcohol-
related offending and police paid particular attention to licensed premises. Across the district 91 compliance checks were made on bars and off licences, along with a further 65 controlled purchase operations to check whether licensees would sell alcohol to a minor. Four on licences failed the controlled purchase operation. Seven people were arrested for breaching liquor bans and a further 22 people were arrested for violence and public order offences.
Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Steve Greally says close to 20 people were arrested for disorder, fighting or low level assaults. He says early intervention in Nelson also prevented things escalating further with police are investigating one assault at Malbas bar. He says breaches of the liquor ban were now well down on where they were two years ago and he was relatively pleased with the results for the city.
Fresh berries at their best for summer
A mild winter and warm sunny spring and early summer have given berry growers around the Tasman district a perfect start to the season. “We are just starting but it’s looking really good,” Waiwest Horticulture operations general manger Alan Dobbie said last week. “The fruit are big and the brix (sugar levels) are high.” Wai-West grows 40 hectares of boysenberries on the Waimea Plains and Alan says they expect to be harvesting through until January 15. Berrylands Peter and Steph Kristofski are also enjoying
a flying start to the season which Peter says started about 10 days earlier than usual. “We had a mild winter and spring temperatures were up so we kicked off really early.” The good start to the season has also been good news for students around the district with Berrylands employing 30 to 50 casual staff to pick and pack the berries. However, both Alan and Peter say there is a long way to go before the season ends and they are hoping the sun keeps shining. “You can’t count your berries until they are in the box,” Alan says.

Bruce McLaren’s Austin 7 restored A “little piece of New Zealand’s history” is currently being restored in a Richmond garage. The 1929 Austin 7 is what motorsport icon Bruce McLaren is believed to have learnt to drive in and it has been at Richard Anderson’s place since July 2011, where it is being transformed from a rust bucket back to mint condition. A member of the local Austin 7 group, Richard took on the job no one else seemed to want after the Bruce McLaren Trust sought Nelson engineers to get it going again in the hope it could go on display in a museum. “They sent the car here to Nelson because we are like the mecca for Austin 7s but it was mostly rejected because it was in a terrible, terrible state. It had been left on the beach and had rotted out,” says Richard. “It was put out to various commercial guys but it was excessive, like $30,000 to $100,000 to do it. I said ‘come on guys lets get it going’ and the car ended up here.” Bruce McLaren, who died in 1970, is one of New Zealand’s most famous sons of motorsport, having won four Formula 1 races. His legacy lives on with the current Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team – one of the most successful in the championship’s history. Richard had only agreed to do the chassis, front end, back end, the diff and the wheels initially. But no one else “came to the party” to help with the body – mainly because it was an unpaid project – so he ended up with the rest of the work to do
Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz himself, and on the odd occasion with help from friends who had also sought parts. “Projects like this are always much bigger than you anticipate,” he says, thinking back to the hundreds of hours spent in the garage. “It was definitely the toughest project just because the bodywork was so badly rusted.” He reckons 75 per cent of the original Austin 7 is still intact, but photos of the car’s condition show how much work went into getting it up and running again. Richard says the fact the car belonged to the McLaren family had no significance to him, it was just a way to “give back” in his retirement as it’s likely to be used at displays for crippled children – Bruce McLaren was diagnosed with a degenerative disease of the hip joint when he was 10 years old. “When they approached us they said they wanted it to be a promotional vehicle, promoting the McLaren thing, but also to help the crippled children societies and to show them what can be achieved as he was effectively crippled as a child. I’m no good at singing carols, so I decided this was something I could do to give back to the community.” There are no photos of Bruce driving the Austin 7, which was described as a “work-

shop hack”, but his sister Jan had told Richard it was owned by their father Les and that Bruce definitely learnt to drive in it, which is why they had hoped to get it running again and be part of the family collection.
Richard described the 750cc Austin 7 as a “car for the millions” and the British equivalent to Ford Model T. “They were cheap to run and devised as a means of transport for the young men coming back from the First World War. “ The final stage of the restoration project will be putting the motor back in and Richard believes it should only take a month to do so. Once completed, he will drive it around before a trader comes to take it back to the family trust in Auckland where it will sit alongside some of his former racecars.

LOTR: Jens Hansen manager Amanda Wearing during a presentation to a Hobbit tour group during the weekend. Seventy five diehard Lord of the Rings fans from all over the world stopped by the jewellers on Saturday as part of a 14 day tour around the Hobbit filming locations. The experience was aimed at giving the group a taste of what being in middle earth feels like and saw the group visit several places that were used in the film including the Pelorus Bridge. They took a scenic helicopter flight to Mt Olympus to take in the views seen in the movie and visited Jens Hansen for an interactive talk about how the legendary ring used in the movie was created. With Christmas almost upon us I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Nelson Bays for the support they have shown their local Police over the last year. I always say that Police cannot do an effective job without your support - after all we simply can’t be everywhere all of the time and we rely on responsible members of the community let us know when things are going on. Our operating model over the past year and a half has been focussed on prevention preventing crimes, crashes and most of all victimisation. If we can stop crime before it happens and we can teach people some simple ways to help keep themselves and their property safe then we will reduce the number of people who become victims. At this time of year a lot of people are out socialising and I can’t stress enough the need to take care of yourself and your mates. People who are intoxicated become easy targets for the criminally minded. It always pays to make a plan before you got out partying and that plan should be all about having fun and living to tell a good story the next day. If you decide in advance how much you are going to drink and how you are going to get home you’re much more likely to have a safe outcome than if you leave those important decisions to chance. While you’re all relaxing and enjoying the summer break remember that my staff will still be working 24 hours a day, seven days a week. From all of the Nelson Bays Police I’d like to wish you a very happy Christmas and a safe new year.

Midwife retires after 47 years Most midwives have seen it all before, but after 47 years on the job, Norma Affleck has seen it all and then some. Her baby catching days have seen her work in Papua New Guinea, Saudi Arabia and spend thirty years at Nelson Hospital. She’s delivered thousands of babies but despite her longevity in the field she says she gets just as excited about a birth today as she did when she first started. “What can I say? Every baby is different and time goes fast when you’re having fun. I come from a family of ten, so maternal and child health, going on my mother’s example, was always going to be what I'd enjoy.” Norma graduated from midwifery in 1966 in Christchurch and in her time in the profession has seen a bit of a contrast in the way things are done. “The most dramatic change I’ve seen was in the first twenty years, husbands weren’t allowed anywhere near during delivery. Now of course we want to know why they aren’t there if not. It’s a complete
turnaround.” She says while “babies still come in exactly the same way”, the change she has seen in mothers has been significant. “They are more overweight and less active. They don’t walk, they drive to the supermarket, buy readymade food and are eating and drinking the wrong foods. “Today a lot of the solo parents see it as a career and see having another child as a rise in pay. There have been plenty of occasions where I have feared for the child because of the lack of maternal care and maturity I’ve seen. And that doesn’t mean because the mother is young - I’ve seen wonderful 14, 15 and 16 year olds mothers who are prepared to put their children first. And so many adults who don’t.” Norma was also around to see one of the biggest steps forward for midwives around the country. “Before midwives got autonomy only doctors were allowed to deliver, even though midwives were clearly doing the work that the doc-

That autonomy has meant better care.” Norma says she’s never taken for granted the privilege of attending a birth and says she will miss it dearly. “The term midwife means ‘with women’. I love teaching new mums the tricks of babyhood. The female body is the
most wonderful machine that knows exactly what it's doing. I will miss it but with friends and colleagues I plan to wean myself off it." As for her retirement, after years of shift work Norma plans to take some time out and get her body clock back to normal.

New lab for Cawthron's oyster research A new purpose-built laboratory at Nelson's Cawthron Aquaculture Park is aiming to help get the country's oyster industry back on its feet. Three years ago a virus devastated New Zealand's oyster industry, wiping out most of the country's Pacific oyster stocks and Cawthron has since been working towards breeding Pacific oysters resilient to the virus. Cawthron's cultured shellfish programme leader, Nick King, says the new laboratory solely dedicated to oyster virus research will help its scientists identify the best performers of their oyster families, which can then be made available for industry production in 2015. Cawthron aquaculture group manager, Dr Jacquie Reed, says supporting the New Zealand oyster industry’s aim of $100 million in exports by 2025 is a major focus for Cawthron. “We see the next two to five years being a key focus on Pacific oysters to help them achieve that goal”. The crisis in 2010 led to job losses, factory closures and saw an overall drop in production of 50 to 60 per cent.

Three generations working together The Nelson freezing works has had a long tradition of families working at the plant with the Hart family, John, Allan, Wally, Ian and Murray, leading the way accumulating 125 years of service. William Scowen and his sons Doug, Warwick and Graham and daughter Lorraine were another prominent freezing works family while Phil Lusty, one of the carpenters who helped build the original works in 1908, was followed by his son Phil in 1941 and grandson, Tony Dyer, who still works at the plant today. But when Richmond’s Sean Gill joined his father Shane and grandfather Norm at the Alliance Group’s Nelson freezing works last month it created history with the Gills being the first family to have three generations working at the plant at the same time. “I’ve been here 42 years and I can’t remember any families having three generations at the same time,” Norm says. “There’s been a lot of families with fathers, grandfathers, sons and uncles all working here but I think our situation is unique.” Norm, who started as a labourer in the old plant before moving to the beef house and then into the cutting room where he is a leading hand and trainer today, says he’s stayed there all these years because it’s been “a steady job that pays well”. He has also enjoyed the challenges of adapting to changes in the industry including learning how to run the computer-controlled weighing and

Now we’re all wearing white gear and hairnets and we’re processing all the sheep into cuts. “So much has changed since I started. If someone had told me I would have to wear a hairnet 40 years ago I would have laughed at them.” Shane says he has stayed at the freezing works because it’s been a good steady job during times when work has not always been easy to find. The pay is also an attraction although he says “it’s not as good as it was when he started”. “It’s still good money but you have to work harder for it these days. I suppose
that’s the same in most jobs though - it’s a sign of the times.” Although Sean, 16, is only a student working there during his school holidays he’s likely to become a more permanent fixture once he leaves Waimea College. “I’ll be going back to school next year but I’ll probably come and work here full-time when I leave,” Sean says. “It’s hard work but I’m enjoying it.” And that’s made Norm very proud because not everyone can handle the long hours and physically demanding work. “We get a lot of young guys through here and they don’t stay on. Sean’s working six days a week in the freezer so he’s doing very well to stick it out - it’s hard work in there.”

Eco-friendly school earns award When it comes to being eco-friendly, Tahunanui School is tops - and they have the award to prove it. Tahunanui School students or the “Green Ninjas” as they prefer to be called, accepted a Bronze Enviroschools award on Thursday for their efforts at being environmentally aware and making their school more sustainable.
Deputy mayor Paul Matheson was at the school to present the award on Thursday and says he is a firm supporter of the Enviroschools scheme. “It's great, it teaches the kids how to be sustainable, how to look after and grow a garden and eventually enjoy the fruits of their labour.” Tahunanui School's Eniroschools coordinator Heidi Newlands says the
students had worked hard all year on environmental initiatives including the implementation of a water tank for the plants in their vege garden, and the nurturing of mandarin and apple trees. Next year they hope to introduce a pack in, pack out initiative for lunchbox rubbish, which will see the school have no bins on site.

Origin Dance Crew have finished in second place at an international invite-only competition in Hawaii. The Car Company Nelson Origin, who are Meila Wilkins, Hana Morris, Ashley Belk, Mikaela Cooper, Hayley Barnett, Jorgia Marsh, Olivia de Thierry and represent Mad Beat Hip Hop, were invited to World of Dance after appearing on New Zealand’s Got Talent. In Hawaii, Origin competed against crews from the United States and Canada, with some having 35 dancers on stage at once. The event was judged by Mos Wanted, who were made famous through MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. Speaking from Hawaii in an email, coach Gemma Laing says Origin had planned to showcase their “power, swag and good technique” as well as continuing to be original. Meila did all of the choreography for the group, who were hugely grateful to The Car Company, Integrity Care Group and all of their other sponsors, without whose support the trip wouldn’t have been possible.

Helicopter pilot Matt Gibb drops a power pole above Rocks Rd last week. Photo: Evan Barnes.
Heli of a job
Replacing a power pole on the hills above Rocks Rd is the “strangest” job Delta’s Dave Morley has ever encountered. The new power pole was needed to go in to replace a 50 year old concrete pole but the land was badly affected by the floods two years ago so the Delta team had to be careful not to dig into the land. The council and residents were also keen to protect the trees around the pole and Dave says they couldn’t get a digger, crane or truck anywhere near it. So Dave came up with a clever idea, fly it in. Helicopter pilot Matt Gibb was called on and last Thursday he dropped the new pole onto its new site, between houses and wires on the hill, and lifted the old pole out. He says it went to plan. “It was good really, worked to plan and I’m sure a few people would have been wondering what on earth was going on as they drove around Rocks Rd last week.”

Community garden turns over new leaf Nelson’s community garden has turned over a new leaf and the message to locals is “come and join us” says garden manager Helen Lynch. After a recent shakeup of the board of trustees, the Waimarama Brook Community Gardens is open to one and all, and for the first time is run by all local trustees. Helen is encouraging anyone who is interested in gardening and getting to know new people to help the group turn the gardens into a new community hub. The garden, which has been at its current site for 13 years, has demonstrative planting gardens, produce, compost and liquid fertilisers, all thanks to the hard work of around a dozen volunteers but there is plenty of room for more says new trustee Sally Rees, “It’s open to anyone in the community who love gardening, being creative and wants a bit of produce in return – not just the Brook community.” Helen says the group hopes to focus on getting the community more involved, not just in the garden but in events that she hopes will be

The idea is to bring people together here in the gardens, the dream is that it will become a community centre
eventually.” The first of such events will be held this Saturday. A market will be held featuring produce from the gardens, which can be bought for a donation with proceeds going straight back into running the gardens.

Crusaders coming to town: Nope not a rugby fan but great for Nelson economy should bring lots of visitors to town. Aleisha Brunell. Yip, got the tickets already. Greg N Debbie Harvie.
Positive news for retailers: Thanks to the Nelson Weekly for bringing its readers some positive news as we head into Christmas. Too often we read only the negative stories and it’s amazing how even positive things can be turned into negative stories by the media. This then creates a perception that things are not doing too well, when in fact Nelson is doing pretty well economically. Paymark data over the past six months has shown that Nelson is batting well above its weight and has consistently matched or out-performed the national average in terms of economic growth. We live in one of the greatest little cities in the world and sometimes we just need reminding how lucky we are to live here. Thanks again for Nelson Weekly’s positive attitude to our great city! Well done NCC, invest a few million dollars on a building that is unsafe. Did any of our council know any of the builders and renovators at all? Lee M Griff.
how it had so many million put into it, for what? On the inside its hardly changed from what I can tell. And now its closed. NCC needs to spend money where its actually needed. Sherri Diack.
Really! After how much money was spent on it! Sarah Davis.
Tahuna lights reduced to one lane: Oh no congestion will be worse won't it? Kristyn Musson.
Seasons Greetings
Saxton should have been built with spectator seating to start with, crazy. Maree Dohmen.
Looking for that unusual Christmas Gift? Want a special present to give on New Years Eve?
Trafalgar Centre closed: How bloody stupid!!! In the last few years it just got done up!!!! What a waste of our money... Hope Rogers.
Would be good to know the total cost of the recent work done on the stadium and then to look at the cost to now bring it up to standard. One would think the work would have been to standard. What is the cost to rebuild? Who will pay for this? Us as tax payers or should the building company who did the job be paying "if it was" their work that was not up to standard? Might be a convenient way for the council to shut it down and move every sporting event to Saxon Stadium. Do we as rate payers get to see a copy of the earthquake report? Lots of endless questions for the Nelson City Council. Maybe the council will allow it to be a home for Lewis Stanton and his frail horse Barny. Glen James Tomlinson.
Where are the Giants going to play now? Tyler Mcconchie.
NCC sure do know how to waste money. It was only just done up a few years ago and advertised everywhere

Great idea back to one lane..to many idiots try to overtake dangerously. Ruth Rodley. Fantastic! Obviously Nelsonians can't seem to grasp the concept of the extra lane - it was designed to keep the traffic moving! No-ones seems to have heard of the 'merge like a zip' road rule! Hayley Selwood. Good on ya mate fordable, casual and family friendly, it’s little wonder the Speight’s Ale House boosts such a great reputation. Gareth has great feedback on the menu and says it was important to him from the start to make it stand up against the best. “Food is very important to us; we really pride ourselves on serving high quality food, sourced locally where possible. I feel we’ve achieved that.” But the main ingredient that has seen the Speight’s Ale House stand out from the crowd is undoubtedly the friendly team’s customer focus. It’s what keeps the customers coming back and why they’ve managed to be so successful says Gareth. “Hospitality is a very competitive industry, so to keep people returning, you need to be on the top of your game all of the time. That is something we have put a lot of work into.” “We try to have really top line service, food and work hard at creating an atmosphere that people love. RICHMOND POUND DOGS NEED HOMES These dogs at the Tasman Council Pound on Beach Road have not been claimed and are now looking for new homes. They are happy healthy dogs, who will come vaccinated and microchipped, and as needed desexed as well.
REX - This a is a goofy character full of bounding energy! Rex is good-hearted and affectionate, and always looks on the bright side. His exuberance makes him more suited to an active family who can appreciate his happy, sharing enthusiasm. MARLEY -
Marley appears to be a pure Labrador Retriever and is around two and a half years old. He’s been a family dog and is used to kids, he also seems to get on well with the other Pound dogs. Marley needs a new home with fences, secure gates and no chickens next door.
WEE GANDALF -
Wee Gandalf is around six months old, and we’ve called him Gandalf not only because he’s grey but because he’s a bright young wizard of a dog. He sits nicely, walks on lead well and just loves the ball. He should be great at agility and flyball as he’s clever and very eager to please, two qualities that don’t always go together.
Contact the Tasman Pound on 03 5443207 if you would like to interview Rex or Marley. If you are interested in Gandalf e-mail secondchancetasman@gmail.com. Web: www.tasmanrichmonddogpound.co.nz Facebook: www.facebook.com/secondchancetasman

Guitar tutor hangs up his strings For decades Mike Gough has been teaching his love of string instruments to Nelsonians, but last week he taught his last class. Mike was a guitar teacher at the Nelson School of Music for ten years in the 90s, where he taught “hundreds, if not thousands” of students, both children and adults. In 2000 he re-trained as a secondary school teacher and landed a
job at Nayland College teaching maths. But his love of music stirred and shortly he was teaching guitar again, via Nayland’s community education classes for night students. He even continued teaching guitar and ukeleke after he retired as a school teacher four years ago. Over the ten years he was at Nayland he taught roughly 1000 adult students. He says he’s loved doing it but is look-

ing forward to finding new challenges. “I have enjoyed it right to the very end and I’m still actively playing music.” Mike is a double bass player in the Nelson Big Jazz Band and mainly plays that and ukulele after RSI in his arm muscles left him in agony when playing the guitar, an instrument he first picked up as a 15 year old. “So I was looking for other things to do and I discovered I could play double bass because it was close to my body and same with ukulele. “Different muscles… phew,” he says. The response Mike got from his students was always positive says Kathryn Slater of Nayland’s community education programme and he will be missed. Some student comments from his most recent class highlight what his students thought of him and his class. “Mike is a great teacher - makes everyone feel comfortable, really enjoyable,” wrote one. “Mike is a great tutor makes it a happy fun night that we all look forward, to a good old fashioned sing along. I had no real expectations and was delighted to find a great bunch of people and an enthusiastic teacher,” said another. “The tutor is excellent! The course has a lovely relaxed atmosphere and Mike gauges the abilities within the group and adjusts accordingly.” Mike says he will continue to play in the Nelson Big Jazz Band and may join the choir next year too. “Who knows?” he says.

Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: My partner and I are always
fighting about money. My partner hates the idea of having a budget, but I think it is a good way to plan for bills. What are some other good reasons for having a budget? A: Having a budget is just about knowing how you are going to spend your money. Here are some reasons why having a plan for your money is a good idea: Agreeing on a spending plan together will significantly reduce the financial stress in your relationship Bills are not stressful. There will be money set aside for the things that you have to pay for: (rent/ mortgage, power, food, utilities, loans etc) You will become more aware of the things you are spending your money on- Is it what you really want? You will be more likely to achieve your financial goals (saving for a house deposit, buying car, going on holiday, going to study etc) You will have some money set aside for entertainment / hobbies You will be more financially prepared for the unexpected (redundancy, illness, accidents etc.) You will be more likely to become debt free and avoid bad debt
A budget is different for each person because everyone has different priorities and different incomes. People affected by Typhoon Haiyan will be better off thanks to a crowd that turned out to support a local community fundraiser held on Sunday. Helping Hands Nelson organised the fun day held at Auckland Point School to raise funds for those affected in the Phillipines, by what was the largest recorded storm to hit anywhere on earth. Haiyan left massive destruction and a large death toll in the Philippines and the cleanup in the aftermath is still ongoing. Around 800,000 have been displaced with those affected left with no homes and in need of fresh water, food, clothing and shelter. Event organiser Craig Barton says he was pleased to see people make an effort to attend the event but says he was hoping for more support. "It was a success on small scale. It was a bit of a hard day as we didn't have alot of people through but we were taking a gamble with time of year. "Although we didn't get a lot of people through no matter what we raised awareness and funds. We were really happy with what happened in the end. Poachers cause fear amongst farmers Fear of retribution, shot stock and damaged property – it’s an issue for rural landowners who are being troubled by poachers and trespassers. While the message from police this summer is to report it – one local man feels there is nothing he can do to stop it. The Dovedale man, who did not want to be named, says that all of his neighbours are aware of one particular man, who frequently trespasses on forestry land and crosses the boundary onto private property while pig hunting. He says while he hasn’t damaged anything yet, security was a “big worry“ and the fact of the matter is he shouldn’t be hunting there in the first place. “There is forestry all around the boundary to my property. Occasionally pig hunters and their dogs will end up on my property and they are usually all right. But this one particular guy, all the neighbours are moaning about him. He comes at all hours of the day and we see him at least a few times a week. I’ve confronted him about it but he just says he can do what he likes.” Unfortunately, this is a problem that is getting worse every year says rural sergeant Rob Crawford. “It is very common, the rural sector is complaining about it all the time. Particularly at this time of year when there are hunters around.” He says while police are prosecuting at least a dozen people for unlawful hunting and trespass type offences annually, he’s amazed at just how often it is happening and going unreported. “People are seeing them, catching them on their property and we are not being told. We need people to stand up and say I’ve had enough of
this and follow through. “It’s not just poaching either. These poachers cross people’s property, there is a lot of theft, gates are damaged, locks are cut. Forestry owners and security also have issues.” Gavin O’Donnell, president Federated Farmers Provincial says the fear of retribution is what’s keeping locals from coming forward and he thinks it’s brilliant that police are so approachable on the matter. “People feel exposed in a rural area, there is a natural reluctance to put their hand up and come forward. Farms aren’t easy things to lock up like a building and there is that fear there. But people should report it because they might not realise how important it is in the bigger picture.” Rory Cobb, technical manager for Action Forests Management says poaching and trespassing is “a pain in the backside" for forest owners and for those who earn their living in the forest, as they are for all those who make their living from the land. "Access is frequently attempted by those wishing to hunt illegally or grow cannabis and poaching is particularly frustrating.” With poachers determined to go wherever they please, Rob says landowners are turning to security cameras to deter people from crossing the boundary. “Up Baton Valley near Motueka, locals got together and organised a security camera. That apprehended one person and word has got round. Since then there have been no issues.” Rob says local hunters who are poaching on private property will have their firearms licence revoked, as well as being charged.

SPORT Dragons survive comeback to seal title Your Community Newspaper
www.shuttersport.co.nz
The unbeaten Eagles have gone down 7-5 to the United Dragons in Saturday’s Under-13 softball final, and the match wasn’t short of drama. A score complication eventually saw United awarded the victory, although the Eagles had claims for a 5-all draw. The Dragons, who had lost to the Eagles in round three, started the better of the two finalists in the Rookie Sox League for Year 7 and 8s, but a Ben Adlington home run with loaded bases saw the Marty Grant-coached Eagles swoop back into contention late in the game. Dragons coach Dave Morel says the first two innings were definitely going his team’s way, but admits things got intense in the third. “They ended up scoring the five runs and then we went into the fourth innings before we ran out of time so it converted back to the third innings score of 7-5,” he says. Dave says the boys were “absolutely rapt” with the win. “Our other junior
team the Rangers won their very first game yesterday and that means they came third, so it was a United victory all around on Saturday.” The United Dragons comprise of mainly Broadgreen Intermediate School students with two from Tapawera Area School. By winning Saturday’s final, United now qualify for a South Island tournament in Christchurch which they won last season.

Nelson South hosts club championship
The Nelson South Swimming Club had another hit out before the New Year with its annual club championship coming to its conclusion on Saturday. Parents and friends of the club were treated to three sessions of action at Hampden St Pool with the long distance events held last weekend and the shorter events split between Saturday morning and evening. An increase in the club’s membership over the last year meant that all age groups were strongly contested, in particular the nine year-old and under boys and girls trophies. Head coach Tim Loach praised the increase, and says it’s wonderful for the club to see so many new and younger kids taking part and enjoying themselves. “We’ve seen some great swimming today and all of the kids did well,”
he says. “It’s a sign that the club is in good health.” The winner of each age group will be awarded with a trophy at the club’s prize giving at the end of the summer season and all participants will receive certificates for their achievements. While full results had yet to be finalized, top contenders for some of the age groups are likely to be Rueben Lile in the nine years and under boys, and Finella Gibbs-Beal in the nine years and under girls categories. Caitlyn Huhu swam extremely well in the ten year old girls grade while Georgie Trengrove swam strongly in all events for the 13 years girls. Eddie Neill, who had numerous wins on Saturday, was likely to be the winner of the 16 and over boys grade. Club captain, Nigel Rukuwai says the championship was “fantastic”.

Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club December has generally been a month of a few missed fishing weekends due to windy weather which is typical for this time of year. The weekend just gone was a stunner and hopefully the weather will start to generally improve as Christmas fast approaches and looking at the long range forecast for this weekend, fine with light winds, boat ramps around the region should see plenty of action. The water temperature is on the rise in Tasman Bay with some snapper spawning now and on the increase over the next few weeks. There have been good snapper caught in the middle of the bay and once more fish spawn the slightly bigger fish will move in closer to shore, just in time for the holidays. There are heaps of pannies about down both the Boulder Bank and Rabbit Island. Large schools of kahawai have been seen in the cut this week, and it would be well worth while to start trolling the Boulder Bank for kingfish from now on. Kenepuru has produced some large snapper in the last 2 weeks but fishing is still quite patchy. The Marlborough Sounds Area opens this month for blue cod on December the 20th. Below are rules pertaining to this area that everyone should be aware of when fishing there. Marlborough Sounds Area: > This area will be closed to blue cod fishing from 1 September until 19 December (inclusive) each year to protect the core spawning season. > Within this area, fishers can only take or possess 2 blue cod per fisher
DBFC stalwart Ron Prestage with a couple of nice Tasman Bay snapper caught on a longline. at any one time. This applies even if you caught the fish over more than one day, fished outside the Marlborough Sounds Area, or you are transporting the fish through the area. > You can only have blue cod between 30cm and 35cm long. > You must not fillet blue cod unless you eat them immediately. Any blue cod eaten form part of your daily limit. > You must not use more than 2 hooks per fishing line when fishing for any finfish species (excluding longlines). > Fishers staying in baches or living aboard vessels are not exempt from these regulations and may only land or transport by sea 2 whole or gutted blue cod on any one day. Maud Island > No finfish of any species can be taken. For more information on the new rules and how they protect blue cod for future generations to enjoy, go to fish.govt.nz.

Commonwealth champ at 75 Bernard Sanders first started working out in the gym as a 13 year old boxer. More than 60 years later he’s still pumping iron and is so good at it he won a Commonwealth gold for his bench press last week. Bernard lives in Monaco and travelled to the Commonwealth and Oceania championships in Auckland last week with a team of other Nelson powerlifters. There he won gold for his bench press, lifting a “raw” 102.5kg, matching the New Zealand record he set last month. He says he only got into power lifting around six years ago and now competes around three times a year. But at 75, Bernard has been fit most of his life, starting as a boxer when he was only 13. From there he went on to finish runner up in the Mr Ireland body building competition. He then got into road cycling, squash, back to body building and now power lifting. He says winning a gold at the competition was a “huge achievement”. “I’m so stoked, you can’t believe how amazing it is to represent your country and wear the silver fern and to win.” Bernard won gold in the Masters 4 category for people aged over 70 at the event that featured lifters from Canada, Eng-

He says he was full of nerves before the event. “I was so nervous that I lost 2kg in two and a half days, just from sheer nerves but everybody was nice and the venue was great.” While the gym is his “second home” and holding the New Zealand record for both “raw” and “equipped” for the bench press in his age category, Bernard says it was still a huge sense of achievement winning gold. “You feel humbled and elated and you look at the big boys and you see them lifting these massive weights and I think ‘I’d like to lift that’. But
then I say to myself ‘you’re 75 years old, you’re doing alright’.” Power Angels Celia McMillan and Aimee Hayes had a very successful competition with Celia taking out the Commonwealth Championship for the squat, benchpress and deadlift combination. She was entered in the under 52kg weight class and lifted 137.5kg for squat, 95kg in benchpress and 152.5kg for her deadlift, making a Commonwealth record combined weight of 385kg. Aimee was second in the under 63kg weight class and lifted 167.5kg for squat, 67.5kg for bench and 142.5kg for deadlift making a combined total of 377.5kg.

Tahuna tennis club on the money It's been a stellar few months for the Tahuna Tennis Club, leading five of the region's tennis competitions and now attracting a new sponsor. Club coach Kenta Naka says the club has been performing well in interclub competitions and is currently leading five of the eight they have teams in, including the top three. "We're leading Nelson's top men’s, women’s and doubles competitions so it's been a great start to the season for us." The club, based on Tahunanui Dr, has also just signed a new sponsorship deal with the Speight's Ale House and its owner Gareth Caldwell. Kenta says the partnership will help the club grow and already has them looking better with
new shirts for the club's top players. "Gareth's been great to us and it's really good to have a local business looking after a local club like us." Gareth says his bar and restaurant is keen to support the community and he was keen to get in behind the tennis club because it was local and filled with great people. "I see this as a long term deal and I want to be involved for a while. They're good people and by the sounds of it, doing really well this year," he says. Kenta says the club is in a great position now and is looking forward to seeing some silverware come to Tahuna at the end of the season.

Nelson’s first ODI close to sellout
West Indies stars Chris Gayle and Kieran Pollard have been ruled out of the ODI series, but cricket fans have still been quick to snap up tickets to Nelson’s first ever cricket international match. The Black Caps will host West Indies on January 4 – the first time both teams have ever played an international here. The significance of the match, played at the peak of the summer holidays and featuring the highest profile New Zealand sports team to ever play in Nelson, has made it the
hottest ticket in town and already “72 per cent” of them have been sold, according to New Zealand Cricket. Temporary seating has increased the capacity of Saxton Oval to 5500 and match manager Neville Male says the stands are selling well. “And certainly the general admission ticket sales are also indicating there is sufficient interest and what we’re hoping for is a sellout,” he says. “As much as we’ve had Super Rugby games, this would have to be the most important sporting
occasion we’ve had in Nelson and that’s significant in its own right.” New Zealand and West Indies are currently two tests through their ANZ International Series and the Nelson match will be the fourth of five one day internationals. Saxton Oval was granted international accreditation just months ago, following the announcement it would be a host venue for the Cricket World Cup in 2015. Tickets went on sale early last week at an affordable price, and not too dissimilar to
what first class domestic prices were when the Central Stags have come to town. Nelson Cricket Association chairman David Leonard says he will be surprised if it’s anything short of a sell out as this is the biggest sporting event to ever be played in our sunny city. “With the capacity we’ve got we’d be confident this will sellout. This is massive. It’s the beginning of a new era for Nelson Cricket.” Tickets for the match can be bought at www. ticketek.co.nz.
