Covid vaccine plans for our region Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Plans are in place for local port workers and their direct household workers to receive the Pfizer vaccine. The vaccine has been approved and workers at New Zealand’s bigger ports will be vac-

cinated first followed by smaller ports like Nelson, according to Nelson Bays Primary Health Organisation’s Immunisation Facilitator Jen Cederman. However, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH) website, if at any time there is widespread community transmission of covid-19, the priority of who will be

vaccinated first would change. This would see over-65s, those living in long term residential care facilitites, and those with underlying conditions and disabilities going to the top of the queue. Jen Cederman said that the Pfizer vaccine will be stored in Christchurch as it must be kept at -70 degrees. Once it leaves the

facility, it will be kept at 2 to 8 degrees, and must be given within four to five days. “Logistically it is tight planning and ordering based on who is going to receive it,” she says. She said there were 400 plus Port workers and contacts in the Nelson Tasman region who would be vaccinated, but exact numbers of

household contacts aren’t known. If the numbers at the clinics don’t exactly meet the doses available, healthcare workers may be vaccinated so that no vaccine is not wasted. The PHO will order the vaccine and run the clinic in conjunction

It’s absolutely brilliant. Acknowledging the past and celebrating history is something to be proud of as a country.

To officially have a day to reflect on how all people came to New Zealand is important and I’m glad that’s been marked in this way.

It’s a blessing and a curse. I can’t help but wonder how it will affect all those small businesses.

It’s my birthday two days before, so I’m looking forward to always getting a long weekend off!

People needed for tree harvesting

Jacqui Rawson

A marketing initiative, called The Pick Nelson Tasman campaign, is underway to attract fruit harvesting workers from within our borders. The campaign is part of Project Kōkiri, the Nelson Tasman economic development collaboration, which was set up to navigate through the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The project involves both Councils, iwi, Mana Whenua, Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce, and the Nelson Regional Development Agency. Project Kōkiri spokesman Johny O’Donnell said while the region was renowned for growing some of the world’s best produce, some estimates suggested Nelson/Tasman’s horticulture industry was facing a shortfall of more than 1600 workers.

The campaign is offering a one-off incentive payment for employees that remain working for a total of six weeks. There is also the possibility of financial assistance for relocation costs. Daily travel costs, work gear, and payment of accommodation costs are also part of the payment which comes from part of the government’s New Zealand Seasonal Work Scheme. Growers usually hire people from

overseas as part of the recognised seasonal employers (RSEs) scheme. This helps to bridge the gap between the number of New Zealanders available and keen to do the work and the numbers that are required for the season. Without the workers, the produce will go to waste and that will have an impact on the region’s economy. Johny says the impact could be in the tens of millions of dollars.

“But it’s more than the jobs we’re promoting,” says Johny. He says the campaign is also promoting the opportunity to explore our stunning, diverse region. Once they’ve finished filling their bins, they can fill their boots with a huge range of activities and attractions.” For more information, visit picknelsontasman.nz where you can apply and get matched with a recruitment coordinator.

Two houses removed from Lower Queen Street are making way for an operating theatre and endoscopy unit. The new venture is the driving force of health professionals that include the Lower Queen Street Health Centre. A two-storey building with additional parking will sit on the piece of land. The new service will be one of a kind in the Richmond area and consist of a day-stay theatre which will provide procedures for patients expected to recover within a day. An endoscopy unit will also allow specialists to do internal examinations via the throat. The completion of the building is scheduled for April 2022. Photo: Steve Page.

New Countdown Richmond puts focus on environment Jacob Page Richmond is set to be the home of one of the most environmentally-friendly supermarkets in the country. Countdown’s latest project on a corner site of Champion and Salisbury Road is set to be completed by the middle of this year. It will be the first Green Star supermarket in New Zealand. The new 3450sqm Countdown Richmond will create around 120 jobs in the local area, and also feature an online Drive Thru for Pick up, a Countdown Pharmacy, a focus on accessibility, a cafe and other retail space. The store has been designed,

and will be built and operated, in a way that reduces negative impact on the environment and the people using it. As part of aiming for the internationally renowned Green Star rating, the store will include trans critical refrigeration, LED lighting throughout, solar energy, energy and water metering, connection to an energy management system, a focus on sustainable procurement and materials, and water conservation measures. While many of the green features in the new store will be invisible to the everyday customer once the store is open, the Green Star scorecard also measures things like the quality of the indoor environment

and sustainable transport options. Countdown has taken into account in the design with a focus on visual and audio comfort (glare, lighting, internal noise levels etc), EV parking and a bus stop right outside. “We’ve worked with the local council on the roundabout upgrade and will continue to support the project to help create a safer local environment for cyclists and pedestrians around the store. We’re really excited to create a supermarket and surrounding area that is best suited to the Richmond community,” says Countdown’s Acting General Manager Property, Matt Grainger.

Turning left is back Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The left turn, off Salisbury Road, is back at the Champion Road roundabout. Customers wanting to support the businesses located at the roundabout will no doubt be pleased to hear they can take an easy left again when approaching the roundabout from Richmond.

This is a great result for customers to get back and show their support for the businesses affected in that area like the Richmond Aquatic Centre. The centre wants to let everyone know they are back into full swing for the school term. They encourage everyone to dive on in and enjoy all that their community recreation facility has to offer. They have their Kids Build-

ing Champions fitness classes, SwimMagic lessons, Friday night Wave Raves and After School Child Care on offer, and also have an exciting new Girls Teen Fitness programme launching. They’re also continuing their ongoing fitness and aqua classes with over 70 classes per week ensuring there are plenty of time options to suit everyone along with some fantastic offers on memberships.

The gym, pools, spas and sauna are open every day of the week and they say it has been fantastic seeing the community continue to show their support. Find out more about all the fun things happening and stay updated by following them on Facebook or by checking out the facilities website. They’re just one of the many businessess saying thanks for your support.

Covid vaccine plans for our region from page 1 with the regular swabbing clinics. There are two general practices in the Nelson Tasman region that will be involved with these clinics and the Richmond Health Hub may also be involved if a Richmond site is needed. Looking to when vaccina-

tions are available to the public, it is unlikely that there will be any Pfizer vaccine left. The quantity available to New Zealand will be taken up by the port workers, managed isolation and quarantine workers, airline staff and close contacts. Vaccines other than the Pfizer one, don’t require storing at -70 degrees are more likely

to be used. Jen Cederman said that the Ministry of Health is still working on a plan but it is likely that it will involve both GPs and separate vaccination centres, much like the centres for covid swabbing. “We don’t want to overrun GPs and their ability to respond to normal business,” she says.

Some GPs have indicated they have capacity to vaccinate large numbers, others are already at capacity. There will be evening and weekend options to make the vaccination accessible outside usual hours. According to the MOH website, vaccinations are due to begin this month.

Nelson Matters Labour began the year last week rushing a law change through Parliament under urgency that removes communities having a vote on whether their council has separate Maori seats. The NZ Herald described it as law making at its worst and reeking of arrogance. I want our councils to be representative and diverse, but I do not support separate Maori seats. I welcome that more

Maori, woman and young people are being elected to councils. Maori now make up 14% of Councillors nationwide, in line with their 14% of population. Exclusive seats for Maori or anyone else is inconsistent with the basic democratic principle of all voters being treated equally. All Councillors should serve all in their community. Separate seats encourages division. The Treaty

of Waitangi does not require separate seats. Article 3 specifies that Maori have the full rights of British subjects, not additional rights. The electoral system belongs to electors, not the elected. That is why referendums decide whether Parliament is elected by FPP or MMP. A referendum is provided for if Councils want to change to STV. The Clark Labour Government wrote the law providing for

referendum on separate Maori seats in 2002 but Labour now says its “racist”. The truth is that Labour does not like voters’ decisions. 21 communities have voted against separate Maori seats including Nelson in 2012, when we voted 12,387 against, to 3,192 for. Government officials have criticised the process saying electoral changes require thorough public consultation. Submissions opened last

Wednesday but closed the next day. Usually it is 20 days. Select committees normally get six months to consider a bill whereas Labour reduced it to six days. Committee members like me cannot read the 12,500 submissions (78% were against) in this time. It is disappointing that Nelson’s Mayor and MP have endorsed the Bill and process. Nelson deserves better on decisions about how we are governed. Advert.

Changes in the driving seat Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Ben Brownie started selling cars when he was 18 years old. He’s now put his career into top gear by taking on the General Manager role for both The Richmond and Nelson Car Companies. This comes about as the two businesses behind the separate car yards have merged into one. “Ben has earnt the right from his performance and commitment,” says Managing Director of The Car Company, Shane Drummond. The career runs in Ben’s family, with his dad being a car salesman too. Ben says being a car salesman isn’t something

you think about doing because it’s taught. Rather, he believes that you fall into it because it’s in the family or someone suggests that you should give it a try. Shane says operationally he has his eggs in quite a few baskets and that he needed to slow down after 36 years in the game. “Ben has a bit more energy,” says Shane. The merger has meant some staff changes and movement between the different dealerships. With a bigger staff base in Nelson, part of this means Ben being based in the Nelson office but is still regularly at the Richmond dealership. Part of Ben’s role is the group’s buyer, which in the current climate is a more difficult role

than it used to be. Ben says they have good supply systems in place in Japan but currently, rather than flying there to meet suppliers, Ben spends hours early in the morning for late in the day making bids via computer. Timeframes are longer and a lot of the cars being imported are already presold. “We’re no longer buying 40 or 50 vehicles a week based on one trip a month to Japan,” says Ben. The Car Company has other parts to its overarching model which include the Tahunanui dealership which remains solely with Shane. There are also the mechanical side and the grooming bay but the busiest of all is The Car Company of which Ben will be managing.

Bringing qualified hope to students Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Mike King and Tai Tupou from support group I Am Hope. Photo: Supplied.

Tai Tupou wants to let local students know that it’s ok to be dealing with mental health issues. After all, he knows firsthand what it’s like. Tai, who is the youth programme development manager for I Am Hope, is speaking at events organised with schools to share his story and let the students know that there is always support. “By having these events in schools our mission is to create the conversation to normalise issues,” says Tai. I am Hope, the youth and community focused support group is run by The Key to Life Charitable Trust, started by Mike King. “We talk to the kids about their inner critic, the way we all talk to ourselves in horrible ways,” says Tai. He says, kids look up to adults thinking they are perfect, but the reality is nobody has all their stuff together. “Me doing what I do, coming and talking with the students lets them know that adults are not perfect, and that they, the kids, don’t need to be either.” He says, we’re brought up to look up to our elders, to respect them but that can put pressure on ourselves to

always be trying to please them. To continually seek to win over approval and respect can leave kids feeling unsupported. Since 2013 Tai and Mike have been to schools all over New Zealand and spoken to around 250,000. “We focus on the young as they are the country’s future and the future audience,” says Tai. After any session with a group of students, around 30 or 40 of them will approach Tai and youth ambassadors that travel with him. Tai says the students grab the opportunity of having someone to listen to them and to share the issues they are facing. Both Mike and Tai give out their personal phone numbers at every school so the students can still reach out after the event. They listen and then Mike and Tai put them on the path to someone who can help them going forward. “I wanted to be a journalist,” says Tai. “But I quit university after two months because I didn’t have the confidence to communicate. “It took me 10 years to finally take education seriously after I left school and now, I have a Bachelor of Social Services majoring in mental health. After I got therapy, the world was my oyster, and my life had a complete turnaround,” he says.

Rachel Boyack MP for Nelson

Last week in Parliament I delivered my maiden statement, where I talked about my journey to Parliament, and what I hope to achieve while I am privileged to represent the people of Nelson. While Nelson is the best place in New Zealand to live, we have some complex issues that we need to tackle. Nelson is one of the most unaffordable places in the country to rent or buy a home. This is what I want to change. A warm, stable, affordable home is the basic building block needed for families and communities to thrive. I am firmly of the view that if we can improve people’s housing, we can improve other outcomes for them; in health, mental health, employment, education and household income. We also need to solve some of our transport issues using modern transport solutions that promote active transport like walking and cycling, and lifting wages and conditions for workers across our region. These are the issues I will focus on while I am privileged to represent the people of Nelson in Parliament.

Help Snowden’s reach their target Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

The team behind Brightwater’s Snowden’s Bush Trust have just nine months to find the final $47k required of their $350k target to save land in front of Snowden’s Bush Scenic Reserve and prevent it from being turned into housing. Waimea Weekly is backing the campaign to save the land, which is home to ancient tōtara trees, some of which are several hundred years old, and other native plants and wildlife, such as tui, bellbirds and kereru. Set up by local resident Janice Gibbs, the trust aims to buy the land from the Anglican Diocese and gift it to the Department of Conservation so it can be integrated into the reserve and enjoyed by the community for generations to come. Amazingly, $302k has been raised so far and the trust was recently granted a ninemonth extension to find the rest, as their original deadline was this month. Founder, Janice, says, “The extension now means we have until 1 November 2021

Snowden’s Bush 100th Birthday and Family Fun Day to be rained off last year, the team have rescheduled for Sunday 21 March at 1pm4pm. The free event is a thank you to the local community for their effort so far in helping to raise funds. With live entertainment, food and market stalls, the area on Waimea Road West will come alive with community spirit. “It’s more of a thank you to locals,” says Snowden’s Bush Trust chairman, Jerry Cameron. “We are hoping to raise awareness for our project as we are tantalisingly close to reaching our goal. Every contribution people can make at this point will make a huge difference.” “Come along and show your support,” says Janice. “We are also planning a series of fundraising events in the future from a charity concert to an auction. Richmond Baptist Church moves into its 170th year Robyn Parkes This year marks the 170th anniversary of Richmond Baptist Church but its origins go further back. Early attempts by James Poppleton Horne to gather together believers with the intention the group be recognised publicly as a Baptist Church, were unsuccessful. Despite the earlier issues, Richmond Baptist Church came into being when a small group of 15 settlers met in November of 1851 to hold a meeting where the following was recorded. “be remembered that on Sunday the second day of November in the year of our Lord 1851, the members were united in church fellowship at the school room at Richmond by Mr Decimus Dolamore”.

The Richmond Baptist Church in 1900. Photo: Supplied. Three years later they built their own chapel at a cost of £117.17 shillings becoming the first Baptist Church built in New Zealand. The early years of the church were difficult. Roads little more than tracks, settlers were scattered, and travel was often on

horseback, bullock or by foot. There were stories of having to ford rivers, walk long distances by foot and sometimes horses bogged down in mud. For many years church events were determined by whether there was a full moon as settlers needed moonlight to travel by.

SALISBURY / CHAMPION ROAD ROUNDABOUT UPGRADE

From the week starting 22 February, we’ll be moving traffic onto the other side of the roundabout as work starts on Section Three, the corner in front of the supermarket construction site. Check the diagram for the layout of Section Three.

WHAT WE ARE DOING • Putting extra lanes on the roundabout to cater for increased traffic as our region grows.

• A temporary roundabout at Templemore / Salisbury for traffic detoured from Champion Road, via Kareti and Templemore Drives. • A new road to Champion Road West – left turn only from Richmond Deviation (SH6) – to access the businesses in this area (Active Explorers, Caltex, Crossbow Coffee Roasters, Eddyline, Hubbers Flooring, Jennian Homes, Moxini, Premier Services, Raeward Fresh, Richmond Aquatic Centre, Zink) who are all open as usual. See our website, tasman.govt.nz/ projects for diagrams showing the easiest way to access the businesses from each direction.

The Lane family were among a group of cyclists who joined in the Go By Bike movement held across the country last week in a bid to ditch the car for a day and cycle instead. Laura, Toby, Jemima and mum Anna were rewarded for their efforts with a free breakfast and hot chocolate at Richmond’s Sundial Square. “We love cycling and the fact it’s good for the environment too is even better,” says Anna. Moutere festival a huge success Jo Kent This month’s Sarau Festival drew the biggest crowd in the history of the event with well over 5,000 people attending the one-day show. The festival is entirely volunteer run, with any profit going back into the community via the Sarau Community Trust. It’s hoped that this year’s major project will be to assist with the walkway/cycleway that the Moutere Residents Association are planning in order to make access safer between the Moutere Village and the Moutere Hills Community Centre. Since the Trust was started in 2008, over $200,000 has been shared with the community – from

the local fire brigade, kindergarten, the Kai Collective food bank, lots of sports and cultural teams, as well as individual scholarships to help local talented people reach for their aims. The Moutere Hills Community Centre has been a major recipient of funds through the years to upgrade and enhance the facility and is the site of the annual festival. Geaneen Hayes, event organiser, says, “Thank you to the volunteers, stallholders, entertainers and authors who made Sarau a huge success. Our community will benefit from the funds raised and we can’t wait to start planning for 2022!” Visit saraufestival.co.nz for more.

Swap Meet & Bazaar Come and find ‘treasures’ at Swapmeet People of all ages are encouraged to come along to the 2021 Nelson Vintage Car Club Swapmeet and Bazaar, which is taking place this Saturday 20 February at the Speedway, Lansdowne Road. Now in its 7th year, the event

began as an opportunity for people to swap car, motorbike and truck parts, and has evolved into a ‘fun day out for everyone’ with stalls selling anything from bric-a-brac and antique radios to old books and records. “There’s a growing desire for people to buy and sell car parts, and being a bazaar,

Local VCC club members, people who belong to other clubs, and members of the public are encouraged to bring their cars (old or new) to the Swapmeet and ‘show off.’

people like to sell other stuff too; things you would typically see at a flea market,” says VCC committee member/editor of Crankcase, Ray Robertson. The annual VCC Swapmeet and Bazaar draws a steady crowd from all over New Zealand each year, with similar numbers expected this weekend. “The event will go ahead rain or shine. People come with their trailer or ute full of parts and simply get their

raincoats out if the weather isn’t great.” Do come along because the Swapmeet might hold some treasure for you, and there’s a range of food and drink stalls onsite, to keep you ‘fuelled up’ throughout the day. “It’s very much the same format as previous years – site-holders can move onto their site from 7am and the public are welcome from 8am.” The club’s new online booking system for site reg-

istrations has been working really well. “Lloyd Ewing of Ewing Poultry came up with the idea – it’s similar to the kind used by accommodation providers and is saving our committee a lot of time because people are doing their own bookings online.” Support VCC’s annual fundraiser The main purpose for having the event is fundraising for the

Free skate lessons

Swap Meet & Bazaar

Jo Kent

Saturday 20 February 2021

Skateboarding just got easier for teenage girls in Richmond with free lessons every Wednesday at the skate park on Gladstone Road. The initiative thought up by Sport Tasman has an emphasis on fun, confidence, empowerment and socialising and the skate sessions are the latest offering by the company to help girls develop their skills. “None of the girls knew each other before coming along so it’s a great way to meet new friends and learn something fun,” says Sport Tasman co-ordinator Ash Cowper. branch itself. Throughout the year, they do lots of fundraising for other organisations, but the Swapmeet is to help keep their own premises going. “The club is in really good shape. We have over 300 members, which is awesome, and we get new members monthly. We’re seeing a few younger members joining, and we always welcome more.” Ray owns a 1978 Mercedes and a 1923 Gray an American car which is 98 years old. “I will be bringing them to the Swapmeet. We encourage as many people as possible to come along, park their car on the bank and show them off.” Ray says it’s always great to gather people from other car clubs or members of the public. “It adds flavour and colour to the event.” The Vintage Car Club would like to thank its sponsors – Speedy Print, Ewing Poultry, Nelson Building Society and Ian McCully Builders. This year’s Swapmeet is a fantastic opportunity to come and support a club which itself sup-

runs Skate School Nelson, has been skating herself for 33 years and was a volunteer coach for over a decade. “I love teaching kids to skate and it also helps girls gain and build confidence too,” she says. The first event ran last year and already the numbers have doubled for 2021. “It’s a free event which means it’s accessible to everyone,” says Ash. “We never know how many girls will turn up but that’s the beauty of it.” The course is open to girls aged 1218 and runs every Wednesday until 3 March at 4.30pm-5.30pm at Richmond skate park. For more info, go to facebook.com/kohinemaia.

Everyone is welcome to come along this Saturday. The event usually attracts around 1200 people each year. Here’s some really exciting news in Port Nelson – Baby on the Move Nelson is under new ownership, with born and bred Nelsonians Marianne Hart Biggs and Glen Biggs now at the helm. Marianne also owns The Black Cab Company and previously provided wedding transport around Nelson/Tasman. Glen is currently self-employed with Hope Mechanical Services, and the couple’s two young children Cece (9) and Alfie (7) have already been spotted helping at the store in the school holidays. Marianne and Glen were delighted to retain the existing team of staff including their Store Manager, Rachel Cooper along with Ruby O’Sullivan and Meg Brookman. Locally owned and employing local staff, Marianne and Glen are also proud to be part of a New Zealand-owned franchise. “We are all one big family and love visits from little people in our recently renovated store.” With a huge knowledge base, the team at Baby on the Move Nelson make child restraints simple. “We are the only baby retail store with qualified and experienced Child Restraint Technicians in the Top of the South. Selecting a child restraint doesn’t need to be overwhelming; we guide customers through our vast selection, focusing on what is the best fit for their child and vehicle, and mostly importantly, to ensure parents are able to use the restraint in a compliant manner.” When you purchase a child restraint, one

of our knowledgeable team members will educate you on how to use it and install it to meet the manufacturers requirements. Plus, you will be given two additional free installations. “We also offer free harness checks for the life of the purchased child restraint,” says Marianne. “Our child restraint technicians are also available to install child restraints purchased elsewhere, from $35. We also offer a ‘three across’ trial consultation to ensure the safety and best fit when dealing with multiple restraints in a vehicle.” Located in a picturesque spot overlooking the Nelson Marina on Akersten Street, Baby On The Move Nelson is open 6 days a week (Monday to Saturday) and onsite parking is available. There are also instore facilities including a bathroom with change table and a private feeding area. Rental items include child restraints for all ages, buggies, bassinets, portacots, highchairs and baby bouncers. You will be impressed by the huge range of baby gear available instore. “We provide solutions for sleeping – cots, linen, sleep suits and more; toilet time – items such as reusable nappies and potties; feeding products; items for playtime like wooden and John Deere toys; teethers, soft toys, giftware, face masks ; and everything you need for baby’s bath time. With its spectacular coastal scenery and untamed wilderness, its fascinating museums and boutique shops, its cool cafés and fabulous art galleries, the West Coast is the ideal spot for weekend getaways, and is just a short scenic drive for Tasman locals.

Blackball was initially a base for transitory gold seekers, but from 1893 a more settled community developed with the coal mines opening. Built in 1910, Formerly the Blackball Hilton has a fascinating history. This ‘old school’ style pub is an historic hotel which has been kept close to its original condition, so you can experience staying in a hotel with its original flair. You will able to meet the locals and other visitors, get lost in the history, and enjoy your favourite drink. Its central location makes it an ideal base to explore the rest of the Coast. The hotel has comfortable twin rooms, double rooms, family rooms and group rooms available plus powered motorhome sites. During your stay, you could visit places like the famous Blackball Salami Shop and the Working Class History Museum. They don’t serve any old pub-grub at Formerly the Blackball Hilton; their chefs pride themselves on à la carte dining using the best ingredients the West Coast provides. Visit www.blackballhilton. co.nz. Shantytown Heritage Park has been an international icon since 1971, offering 50 years of

experience in preserving the West Coast’s pioneer history from the 19th century. The park is an ideal place to spend a few hours with your family. You’ll gain an understanding of the wider environment and mind-set that sculpts what we know as ‘Coasters’ to this day. With the discovery of gold in 1864, settlers soon flooded the rivers and creeks of ‘The Coast’ faster than a downpour of that famous rain ever could. Various nationalities merging over their shared mineral pursuit. This in turn led to the demand of timber for building infrastructure. In order to claim these resources and survive, you had to be hardy through and through. If you choose to visit Shantytown, be sure to take the heritage train ride and pan for your piece of West Coast gold from up at their gold claim. While riding on the train is leisurely, getting the knack of a gold pan isn’t quite as straight forward. Patience will pay dividends. Ross Beach TOP 10 Holiday Park is a boutique, funky,

couple-friendly retreat with upcycled quirky shipping containers for accommodation. Like no other TOP10 – this boutique park is right on the shoreline of the Tasman Sea, set in 6 acres of lush landscaped native flax. There are 11 quirky units available called Apartment Pods or Sleeper Pods; individually designed, offering a great night’s sleep and fully self-contained. There are 16 powered sites; spacious, offering peace and privacy, with areas of grass for small tents. If you like camping, or want to pop the kids in the tent whilst you Glamp it up in the Pod, there’s some familyfriendly options. Cycling the West Coast Wilderness Trail? Located nearby, Ross Beach Top 10 Holiday Park offers secure car storage, are licenced to relocate your vehicle, and can shuttle you between accommodations. Or maybe display your talents by entering an exhibit in one of the shed or hobby classes: handcrafts, vegetables, flowers, domestic produce, farm animals, pets or photography? The iconic Murchison A&P Show is gearing up to be another fun day all out for all the family on Saturday, 20 February. “Last year we celebrated the show’s 100th anniversary which was extremely successful,” says president, Allan James. “It was a big show, we had a big number of entries and a large number of people attended. We couldn’t have wished for anything better.” Although this year’s show will be smaller, it still has the

same number of horse entries. “Murchison is a popular place for equestrian events because it’s so central in the Top of the South.” While other entries are down slightly for the 101st show, Allan says there’s still quite a bit of enthusiasm for the event. “We will still see a decent number of participants in the shearing circuit and wood chopping is an annual feature.” Allan says ‘the blocks are already on the ground, ready to go.’ Tug-Of-War is always a

Murchison A&P Show Saturday 20 February

The equestrian section, which will take place on both Saturday and Sunday at this year’s Murchison A&P Show, has attracted the same number of entries as previous years. The ever-popular shearing and woodchopping sections are back this year and a newly-introduced ‘Almighty Mutt Dog Show.’ introduced Murchsion’s ‘Almighty Mutt Dog Show’ which is a new event for 2021. This is open to anyone with a dog, large or small, any breed. You can enter on the day, from 10.30am, start time is 11am behind the War Memorial. Classes include ‘Best Dressed Doggo,’ ‘Fetch Fido,’ and ‘Clever Dog (show us your trick).’ Allan, who is currently still the show’s president, says they have a very small but enthusiastic team of people who work hard to make it all happen each year,

and he has really enjoyed being involved in such an iconic annual event. However, after this year he will be stepping down from his role and is hoping that the ‘younger generation will step up and take over.’ “I was very keen to see the centenary come because my granddaughter rode side saddle in the 100th anniversary and she is a 5th generation of James’s to ride in the Murchison show. “That was pretty special to me,” he says. The 101st Murchison A&P

Show will be held on Saturday 20 February at the Murchison Sport, Recreation and Cultural Centre, 34 Hampden Street, Murchison, from 8.30am until early evening. Adults $10, Children (under 15) $5, Under-5s free, $20 per family. NB: The equestrian events will take place on the Saturday and Sunday (20 and 21 February). Just a thought... Pastor David Jensen Richmond Baptist Church “…Set them apart by the truth; Your word is truth…” The prayer of Jesus. John 17:17 Back in 2006 I spent a month traveling around Egypt, Sinai and Israel with a friend. While staying in Sinai we decided we would climb Mount Sinai, extremely early in the morning, and watch the sunrise. So, we purchased two small torches and then made our way up the windy path. It was dark, so dark in fact that we were only able to see just a few feet ahead. I was grateful for that light, knowing we would probably stumble, fall, or get lost without it. So, as we walked up Mount Sinai (where Moses received God’s word) with our little torches I remembered the words of King David recorded in Psalm 119 where he declared to God “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). Jesus made it clear too that He also treasured the Old Testament (OT) Scripture speaking of it as “the word of God” (John 10:35, Mk 7:13, John 17:17 etc.). As we look through the gospels, we see that often as Jesus taught, He referred to the OT’s authoritative direction in various mat-

ters (e.g., like marriage Matthew 19 etc.). Jesus also made clear that its preeminent role was that it prophetically foretold about His coming, suffering, death, and resurrection (Lk 24:25-27,44-48, John 5:39,46 etc.). The Apostles, that Jesus sent forth as His own unique ‘eyewitness’ representatives, also reminded the church that the OT Scripture was “God breathed” and therefore, they concluded, it must play a vital role in the lives of those who follow Jesus (2 Tim 3:15-17, 4:2-3, 1 Cor 10:11, Rom 15:4). In God’s Providence Holy Scripture was extended (and completed) by Jesus and the apostles He sent out as eyewitnesses to share the Good news (Act 1:2122, 1 John 1:1-5, 2 Pet 1:16-21 etc.). These apostles not only proclaimed the Good news about what Jesus did for us (through His death and resurrection) but they also taught followers of Jesus “to obey” everything that Jesus had commanded them (Matthew 28:19-20). The end result is we now have the Bible, Old Testament and New Testament. I’m truly grateful that God has provided a lamp for our feet and light to our path. How about you? What place does God’s word, the Bible, have in your life?

Church, but not as we know it

Jenny Nicholson

Traditionally churches have met together on Sunday mornings but with covid-19, a new way of meeting was necessary and online churches increased in number and popularity. After covid-19 some people continued with online church, feeling it fitted their lifestyle better than attending a local church. For some, virtual church is a safe place and they are comfortable continuing watching online. For others it is a place they can look at before choosing to engage with others from the church. Cherie found her church home online. At a low point she said to God, “This isn’t what you have promised life would be like, joy, hope and peace. You need to do something.”

The next day an invitation to join a women’s group appeared on the work computer. She decided to give it a go and connected straight away with Hannah, one of the Pastors. Hannah texted the next day, met her for coffee as soon as time allowed and met her at the door of church the first time she attended. For Cherie connecting online was the first step in the process but she found it a challenge not actually knowing the people. The first week she arrived at church people said to her, “Oh, you are the one we’ve seen on Zoom.” Church is family to Cherie. When she had to be away recently, having the opportunity to livestream the service made her feel she was still connected. “It’s a great opportunity for people with no church background to check church out from the safety of their

Hydroplanes set to roar on Lake Rotoiti Jacob Page Raymond Hart is proving even after decades racing power boats, he still has new tricks up his sleeve. The veteran will be one of the main contenders in the blueriband class which will run alongside the 2021 NZ Power Boat Association New Zealand Championships on March 13 and 14. Hart is racing his new Hydroplane Miss New Zealand which is capable of going 280kph. “We’re coming along good

with it, the engine is reliable, and the boat handles really well. “Miss NZ flies along the water and it corners well so the G forces are quite a lot stronger when you’re three quarters of the way through the corner. “You can’t hold your head up it’s that powerful. “We do laps in 35 to 40 seconds but unlike racing a car, each lap can be different depending on what the water is doing and that’s what I love most about the challenge of racing these boats.”

Jack Burson won the junior section of the ministocks at Rotorua, Eddy Frans defended his South Island Production Saloon title in Greymouth, while Jonti Austin picked up his first TQ feature win in Nelson. It was a busy weekend at the Nelson track with several classes racing for club championships. The Greymouth track was in top order, with multiple race lines. The top three drivers in New Zealand all attended, making it a tough meeting to win, Geoff Watson got the Nelson drivers off to a good start, winning the opening heat, there was plenty of bumping throughout the event. Dave Leitch, Zoe Connelly and Fee Frans needed a heap of panel work afterwards. The final race had Frans off the front with the ex-national champion Brad Johnson, but it was Frans that got the lead early. Vaughan Cornelius started to make his way up the field, battling with 3NZ Vaughan Fairbairn from Canterbury for many laps with Frans defending his title. Cornelius making it a Nelson 1-2-4-5 with Fairbairn third. Jordan Gillespie finishing fourth and Fee Frans made it a huge family day by coming in fifth overall.
