Stranded passengers fume
Air New Zealand passengers flying from Auckland to Nelson were left “fuming” after being told the flight was cancelled because of bad weather, only to see other planes fly out without a problem. Several passengers on flight 5253 contacted Nelson Weekly about the experience that left them feeling “ignored” and “frustrated”. Many of the passengers had flown to Auckland for the Eagles concert, while wheelchairs mobility scooters walkers/canes electric bed/hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

others were travelling back to Nelson after a holiday abroad. Passengers say they were originally told the flight was delayed due to an “engineering fault”, the reason was later changed to poor weather in Auckland. That was despite all but one other flight departing Auckland without problem. The stranded passengers were later flown to Wellington, not Nelson, because there was no accommodation available in Auck-

Nelson passengers who helped her get a flight to Wellington and then to Nelson on Monday. One of the passengers who helped her, didn’t want to be named, but did say “this pretty much sums up where Air New Zealand are at the moment – nowhere.” Nelson’s Erin Silke-Atkins says she was frustrated at the “lack of customer service”.

“Trying to get out of the Gobi desert, back to Nelson. It took 14 hours with a taxi driver who didn’t know where he was going and couldn’t speak English.”
“Got stuck in Hong Kong on the runway, the aircraft had fuel trouble. We went back into the terminal and sat there for six and a half hours.”
“We missed our flight to Manchester as we had to wait an hour and a half on the plane for the stairs. It was humid ‘cause they turned the air con off.”
“I spent 11 hours on an airport marble floor. Spanish air traffic controllers were on strike so the flights got backed up.”
Muddy Buddy another success Passengers ‘frustrated’ Jessie Johnston
What started out as a fun run ended up more like a mud bath, as participants waded, crawled and stumbled through the Sport Tasman 2015 Muddy Buddy. The sixth annual event was first thought up by Jodie and Nathan Fa’avae and is now the main fundraising activity for Tasman School. Despite changes to this year’s course, things went fantastically says Tasman School principal, Pip Wells. “We had nothing but praise, so everybody who entered had an absolute ball. They thought that the course was the best ever and it had a few challenges, so that was really cool.”
TDC councillor Judene Edgar was amongst those getting stuck into the Muddy Buddy, having taken part in every event since it was started. “It’s family fun, you’ve got to let your hair down, you’ve got to have a bit of fun and laugh at yourself, and being covered in mud is a great way to do that.” With the new resource consent, the school will be able to host the event for the next ten years, using the same course people encountered on Sunday. Part of the ten year plan will also see the students of the school monitoring the estuary and the impact people have on it before and after the Muddy Buddy. A final total hasn’t been worked out yet but the school hopes to have raised around $12,000.

The council’s communications manager, Paul Shattock, says they’re going to look into the concerns but reiterated that it isn’t a council problem. “Often the bedding material gets washed away by a high pressure leak, though we have asked Nelmac to investigate this matter on our behalf. If there is no evidence of bedding material then we will need to talk to the developer and their expert for an explanation,” he says. Paul says the council does feel for the residents. “We do feel sorry for them,
and hope they can work through this matter so they don’t have issues moving forward.” Pete says the pipes burst in different places each time and when they do they get a “nasty” letter from the council to fix it quickly or they’ll be fined. “Thousands of litres of water have gone down the storm water drain over the past few days. It’s just becoming a bit tiresome, the whole thing,” he says. Pete says in an ideal world the whole cul-de-sac would be pulled up and new pipe laid, but he doesn’t see why the residents should be left with the bill.

SUPER YACHT ARRIVES AT PORT: News that the super yacht “The Hemisphere”, arrived in town got people talking on Nelson Live. As did the weekly rental price, a whopping US$280,000 a week. The super yacht arrived on Saturday and left again on Sunday, it can hold 12 guests and eight crew. Comments were mostly jokes along the same lines, like this from Michelle Sinclair, “OMG, I see a girl’s week coming on! I’m sure if we all put in we could rent it for a week.” MOBILITY SCOOTER ON ROAD: A photo of an elderly man driving his mobility scooter on a Nelson road was described as “dangerous” and “frustrating”by a Nelson Live reader. The photo was sent to Nelson Live and shows a man driving his mobility scooter on the road, which is against the law. The photo sparked plenty of discussion ranging from frustration to sympathy for the riders due to the state of the footpaths. SPCA overwhelmed by stray cats Monique Bergman The Nelson SPCA is being overwhelmed by stray cats and kittens with almost 100 now being cared for at their Waimea Road shelter. Nelson SPCA general manager, Donna Walz, says the number of cats is comparable to last year, however the difference is that no one is coming in to adopt and take them home. “Quite a few kittens have gone to new homes, which is great, but it is their lovely mothers who just seem to be forgotten and left behind,” says Donna. As an incentive, the SPCA is offering free starter packs for the first ten adult cat adoptions. The packs include a box to transport the cats home in, litter trays and food. The process of adopting a cat or kitten involves matching the right animal with the right family and home. Before the cat is put up for adoption, they go through a health check and are microchipped, vaccinated and temperament tested. There will be an adoption fee which helps to recover the costs of their rescue, rehabilitation and healthcare. Cats and kittens available are

Plenty of thrills and spills at derby Jacob Chandler
A few tumbles can always be expected when dealing with trolleys, but organisers say Saturday’s Mike Pero Nelson Trolley Derby was one of the safest they’ve ever had. Event organiser Tim Bayley says there were definitely some scrapes but nobody was seriously hurt. “It was quite a quiet day for the crash crew and the ambulance. Nothing more than just a few good thrills and spills.” He puts this down to a change in the way the trolleys were tested. “In past years we just started, turned the timer on and told them that we were timing all the races. This year we emphasised that it was just practise and there was no time being taken,” he says. A number of new technologies were tested in this year’s event, including a new, motorised start gate and wireless RFID tracking on the trolleys to catch the winning times. Tim says the start gate worked flawlessly, but there were some software issues with the RFID timings and they had to revert to manual timings. “There were a few issues but they should be ironed out by next year.” Wheels, aerodynamics and good driving are what Tim says matter the most when racing a trolley. He says the variety in the designs was spectacular considering they’re all made to do the same thing.

Everyone is faced with the same problems, gravity and driving the course. You have to have the nerve to hold your line and stay on course. Some didn’t do that this year, in the final they were all squeezed onto one side of the course. Five trolleys on the left hand side and one on the right by himself. “Things get a bit interesting when the trolleys start to touch halfway down the course at 65kmh.” Sam Perkins took out the fastest time in the 6-10 aged Zoomers class, Morgan Dacombe won the 11-17 Sprinters class
and Jack Lovell came first in the 18 and over Rockets class. Once again Stefano’s took out the fastest corporate driver, a section that, along with sponsorship, hire their trolleys to help fund the event. Gordon Dacombe entered a number of trolleys in the event with his grandchildren and was kind enough to attach a Nelson Live camera to his trolley, which gives a great view of what it’s like to race the derby.

the competition three times in a row. Team member Oliver McPherson netted a single snapper weighing just over 9kg. Troy says a lot of it can just come down to luck. “There is luck and skill on the day, not all teams weighed in four fish so their team total was down. The one that got second only weighed in three fish. Had they had a fourth fish they may have won." Another notable catch was a kingfish weighing in around 15kg. The event was delayed a week due to the bad weather and Troy says he was glad he made that decision. He says the change in date didn’t suit some people but he also managed to get more signed up with the extra time. "We lost a few, but we also picked a few up." He says he couldn’t have run the event and raised the money without the generosity of his sponsors, notably Simrad, Big Blue, Totally Boating, Nelson Weekly and the Speights Ale House.

January a record month for tourism Simon Bloomberg
The “good news” continues for the NelsonTasman tourism industry with the latest figures showing a record number of visitors stayed in commercial accommodation in the region in January. Last year, Nelson had 1.25million guest nights, which was the second-highest number since records started in 2000. And the strong performance has continued this year with the latest figures showing that January was a record month with guest nights increasing 9.8 per cent on last year to 286,921. “The results are very pleasing
and on track with what we were expecting,” Nelson Tasman Tourism chief executive Lynda Keene says. “I’ve been keeping my fingers crossed that the January results would produce what we secretly thought could be achieved, and they have. “I’m absolutely delighted we have hit new records of total guest nights and international guest nights since records were kept in 2000. The 2007-2008 year produced the highest total guest nights of 1,271,567 and I knew, if the feedback from operators was correct, we were going to have a great season.” Lynda says the international guest nights
with Jessie Johnston
Kiwi Air, Tuesday, March 10: The country’s newest airline, Kiwi Regional Airlines, will start flying out of Nelson as early as September, offering seven-day a week flights between Nelson and Queenstown, Palmerston North, Hamilton, Auckland and Tauranga. Nelson is first in line for the new flights which will be offered by two twin engine Saab 340A planes. A third aircraft is planned as soon as the two initial routes are operational. The planes will include full in-flight service with discounts available for multi-fare tickets.
contributed a 5.5 per cent increase while domestic guest nights jumped 11.4 per cent. Nelson compared favourably with the national average increases for January of 2.5 per cent for international and 4.6 per cent for domestic guest nights. Tourists also stayed in Nelson for longer in January with the length-of-stay averaging a record 3.05 nights. Although Lynda says that’s pleasing, she remains concerned that Nelson-Tasman still experiences the biggest drop of guest nights in winter. “The region has the fourth highest lengthof-stay on an annual basis but does experience the biggest drop of guest nights
in winter. This is why it’s critical the region invests in infrastructure and marketing that will produce increased visitation during May-September.” Lynda attributed the record guest nights to a combination of factors, including the continued development of cycle tourism, associated and promotion of the region’s wineries, restaurants, arts and sports events. Lynda says Nelson Tasman Tourism’s “very selective” marketing has also helped produce positive results that either tracked or exceeded national trends, particularly in the high season.

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS: Team “Tune Belt”, Harri Saunders, Seth Kingsbury, Justin Hasche and Michael Morgoun. Photo: Andrew Board.
Nayland teams go head-to-head in business challenge Ten teams of Nayland College students got a crash course in running a business at the BP Business Challenge last week. The teams had to come up with a product, do some market research for it, and figure out where to manufacture it and how to pay for it. The team of Harri Saunders, Seth Kingsbury, Justin Hasche and Michael Morgoun won the competition for their “Tune Belt”, a rubber belt that allowed swimmers to listen to music while in the water. They were closely followed by “Flexi Fit”, who made little rubber socks to slip over the end of your headphones for phone chargers so they don’t break. The winners were given certificates from Nelson MP Nick Smith and the compliments of the judges. Michael, the CEO of the winning team, was shocked when his team was announced as the winners. “I can’t believe it.” Other ideas included, skin-coloured head phones without a lead that would allow students and workers to wear them undetected from “teachers and bosses” and a travel device that would give tourists a commentary of where they were driving or cycling via a GPS unit. Judge Melissa Hutcheson, from the Nelson EDA, said all the teams did well. “There was a lot of creativity and the CEO’s all did a great job for their businesses.”

ments the chair is a titular position and not an executive position. In other words the president has no executive powers. It is the committee and only the committee that has the power to make and take all executive decisions. The committee does not have to seize power; it already has power. It is the chair that has no power, and therefore must be the one regarded as attempting to seize power from the committee, and not the other way around. The quorum voice of the committee is the organisation’s voice and position. It then follows that the president’s voice is the one that must be regarded as dissident. While members may constitutionally requisition a special meeting, it is still the committee who must approve, arrange, and execute that demand. Grey Power must return to being run according to proper constitutional procedure, according to Hoyle and not Male. Dan McGuire. Kiwi Air coming to Nelson first: About time Air NZ had some competition. Their prices for these routes are ridiculous! Jannine Krammer. Good luck:) hoping this works for ya! Caroline Mew. Thank goodness, Air New Zealand needs some competition, especially in Nelson. Eleanor Hamlin. Air New Zealand will run it out of town as they do with any airline
that tries to compete directly with them. The Commerce Commission don't seem willing to take Air NZ on over their tactics. John Sauer. Great if it is affordable. Barb Grant Sounds too good to be true, because it is. Hate to be cynical, but I am. Linda Bridgland. The guy running it doesn't have a great track record. Don't hold your breath! Nigel Thompson. Be great it if comes together... But in reality, if it does it won't last... Like Origin Pacific. Kate Eggers. About time, now we have a choice, sick of Air New Zealand. Things got bad once the Origin Pacific had gone under. Air New Zealand has enjoyed the monopoly that it has for way too long. Virgin and Jetstar were only ever competition for Auckland/Wellington and Christchurch. The time that Origin Pacific went under, and the fact that Virgin were coming in to New Zealand around the same time, was strange timing, to say the least. Nayland Pools have busiest month ever Andrew Board
Nayland Pools set a new record for the greatest number of swimmers in a month, with 13,137 people jumping into the pools in January. It broke the previous record, that stood since January 2008, of 11,781. Dave McKenzie, the manager of the pools, says its been a fantastic year for the facility, with plenty of sun keeping locals hungry for a cool swimming pool. “We now also hold the record for the most to an outdoor wave rave with 175 attendees, so it’s been a great summer for the facility.” Dave says the pools usually see about 32,000 people through in a season but he’s hoping for more this year. “The weather’s been the main reason for the increase but we’ve also had swimming camps from Wellington and Christchurch here which helped increase the numbers.” The pools close to humans this Friday, March 20, but the following day it’s over to the dogs, with the complex being opened up to man’s best friend. The “Dog’s Splash” will be held on Saturday and Dave says dogs are invited to come along and enjoy the pools for free. “We’ll have lifeguards and tennis balls for the dogs so it should be fun.” Dave says it’s the first time they’ve done a dog’s splash but other pools around New Zealand do it and it could become a regular at Nayland as well. The dog’s splash is open from 10am to 12noon and all sociable, registered and clean dogs are invited.

Mayor Rachel Reese overlooked the parade on Trafalgar St, along with presidents of both the New Zealand and Australian pipe band associations. Event organiser, Helen Gilchrist, says the mayor was delighted with the results and the council is supportive of a bid to run the National Contest again in two years’ time. With Nelson Weekly editor Andrew 'Bad News' Board
It’s now just over a fortnight. Two and a half weeks until the 20 dopes who put their hand up to get inside a boxing ring face off against each other for the Fight 4 Victory. The range of emotions has been pretty extreme over the past three weeks or so. I’ve gone from wanting to find a cold dark room to curl up in, and hope the whole thing passes me by without anyone noticing that I didn’t actually turn up, to pure and genuine excitement about the fight. It’s a funny thing, our emotions, but the reality has definitely hit home and there has been a change in atmosphere at the gym. Turning up to boxing training used to be fun. We’d all laugh and joke and think about what a great thing we’re all doing. Now it’s different. Now it’s serious. Now we’re talking about black eyes and bloody noses… not as much fun.
As we head into the final few weeks, every training session has more of an edge now. I can’t sleep because I can’t stop thinking about it. I can’t wait until it’s over, not because I’ll be able to celebrate finishing this massive challenge. Because I’ll be able to close my eyes and not think about ducking punches. I asked some of my team mates in the blue corner how they were feeling: “Excited”, “nervous”, “twitchy” were just some of the responses. Funnily enough, I feel all those emotions and more. I can’t wait until the fight and I can’t wait until it’s over. Fight 4 Victory is a charity boxing event at Saxton Stadium on April 4. Ten fights, each for three rounds, will be held. All money raised from the event will go to the Victory Boxing Charitable Trust. To buy tickets see www. ticketdirect.co.nz.

Aquafiness is also fantastic for people recovering from injuries or surgery— it allows you to strengthen muscles and maintain fitness without stressing vulnerable joints. It also helps balance out muscle groups that may have become uneven through repetitive actions; working out in water provides equal resistance throughout your full range of motion. But It’s not just your heart and muscles that stand to benefit from an Aquafitness class. Working out in water is also fantastic for your internal organs and lymphatic system. Hydrostatic pressure, turbulence and buoyancy assist in venous return (the flow of blood back to the heart) and lymphatic drainage. These extra benefits help explain why participants feel so good after a class—the body is refreshed rather than exhausted! For more information on any of our aquafitness classes, call Jo on 5463221 or email jop@clmnz.co.nz.

Last of the harvest ready for 'summer fare' Monique Bergman

One of the biggest events of the year, the popular Sprig and Fern Summer Harvest Fare, returns to Richmond this Friday. The street party signifies the end of summer and celebrates the harvest of local food, wine and beer. Around 25 food and beverage stalls, featuring six local wineries and Sprig and Fern beer, will be on offer. Around 4,000 people attended last year’s community event and it is one of the last in the region before daylight savings ends. Major sponsor, Sprig & Fern
Brewery, has been a part of the fare for a number of years and owner Tracy Banner says they are very proud to be involved. “We are a big part of the Richmond community, it is such a good event and it is great to see people having something to eat and drink and catching up with friends, it is most enjoyable to be involved in it,” says Tracy. This year’s entertainment will feature local covers band Urban, along with performer Craig Lee. There will also be something for the children, with face painting, balloons and a bouncy castle from 6pm to 8pm.
Organiser Kim Quint from Richmond Unlimited, has been working on the event for over four months and says she is looking forward to people having a good time and enjoying the music. To encourage responsible drinking, they will be providing the N-Bus as a free service, dropping passengers off at designated stops in Stoke, Bishopdale, Nelson and Tahunanui. It departs from the Queen St end of Sundial Square at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm. The Sprig and Fern Summer Harvest Fare is on Friday, March 20, from 5.30pm to 10pm. It is a free event for the whole family.

Two forms of Communication: Its recommended that anyone going boating carries two forms of communication. That could be flares and a cell phone, radio and cell phone, flares and radio- I am sure you get the picture. You can also imagine the Harbour Master's mirth when he picks up a couple of likely lads speeding through the marina because they had forgotten to put the bung in. Out of the water quickly and the day was saved. “Do you have lifejackets? “ “Yeah man, they are on the back seat”…….. Oops Do you know the speed limit here is 3 knots? “Yeah man, it's just that we were sinking” The faint glimmer of a smile begins Do you guys have two forms of communication if the vessel had sunk? “Yeah man – he’s got a cell phone and I’ve got a cell phone” Enough said. Well, I was too busy chuckling to say anything more. The likely lads were soon underway again, wearing their lifejackets with both forms of communication securely tucked in their pockets. Remember 5 Golden Rules on the Water:Wear your Lifejacket Be a Responsible Skipper Take two forms of communication Check the Weather Forecast Avoid Alcohol Have a great week boating. Stay safe. Rainbow Rage celebrates 20 years On Boxing Day in 1995, Mike Gane and Barry Chamberlain mountainbiked from St Arnaud through the old stock-driving route to Hanmer Springs. When they were sitting in the pub afterwards, enjoying "the best pie and pint we'd ever had", Mike says they agreed the ride would be "a bloody good idea for an event". The following year, the "bloody good idea" became a reality when Mike organised the first Rainbow Rage mountainbike race from St Arnaud to Hanmer Springs. Sixty-six riders competed in the 106km race and although it was cold and wet with a bone-chilling head wind, the riders raved about it and entries increased dramatically to a peak of 1604 in 2001. Although numbers have fluctuated since then it still remains extremely popular, with many riders notching up 10 or more Rainbow Rages and around 500 riders expected at this year's 20th edition. "At the prize-giving last year, I asked riders who had done 10 or more Rainbow Rages to put up their hands and I was surprised at how many there were," Mike says. "We even had one rider, Ian Gabites, who had done it 15 times. There's also been quite a few families doing it together. Last year, the fastest woman, Olivia Miller, was racing against her father, Tim." Of course, there have always been some riders who have needed more of a challenge than simply riding 106 kilometres. 'high quality' hops keep growers busy monique Bergman
Beer lovers can lick their lips because the quality of this year's hop harvest is "very high", says the industry's top man. New Zealand Hops Limited chief executive, Doug Donelan, says, despite a very cold spring start and extended dry spells, this season’s hops harvest is of a very high quality. All New Zealand hops are grown in the Tasman District and it is estimated around 760 tonnes will be harvested this season. It starts with plants emerging from the ground in early spring and finishes with the harvest during late February and March. Hops were first planted in the
Nelson region over 150 years ago, where they thrived in the long hours of sunshine. There are now 18 growers throughout Riwaka, Tadmor, Moutere and Waimea areas, supplying hops through the cooperativelyowned NZ Hops Limited. “The level of dedication from our hop growers is great, they work very hard and it is an absolute credit to them, they really do a good job,” says Doug. Fifteen per cent of the hops produced here are used within the domestic market, with the remaining exported to the USA, United Kingdom, Europe, Japan and Australia. Speciality varieties grown in our region, such as Nelson Sauvin and Motueka, are in high demand
within the international market because of their big aromas. “Our product is unique in the fact that our hops are grown without the use of fungicides or pesticides and our hops have no diseases, which we are recognised internationally for,” says Doug. Fourth generation hop farmer, Peter Lines from Totara Brewing Co, grows 12 varieties of hops on his property in Wakefield. His client base has increased over the past ten years due to the worldwide explosion of both small and large craft beer breweries. His harvesting machine is working seven hours a day and it is expected his 12 staff will harvest around 27 tonne this season.

NelsoN Rugby Football Club Nelson Rugby Club has a new motto this year, you don’t just play, support or volunteer – You Belong. It’s a mantra the club is keen to flow through the whole organisation and by the turn-out of senior players at training last week, and junior registrations on Saturday, it’s having an impact. Last year the senior A team struggled to pull numbers together for a few of its games but coaches Kade Heke and Andrew Goodman presided over a full squad at training last week and on Saturday around 300 kids confirmed their registra-
tion to play rugby at Nelson this year. Club president Shane Graham says the club is in a great position. “We’ve got a big, strong non-playing membership who are keen to be involved, one of the biggest JAB clubs in the union and this year we’ll be launching our 150th celebrations which will be a big deal. “There’s a lot of energy and people are really keen. Most of our people are volunteers, it’s a community organisation.” The club is the country’s oldest, and was famously involved in the first game of rugby to be played in New Zealand, against Nel-
son College. Next year it will celebrate 150 years since it was founded. But the immediate focus is on this weekend, where the Car Company Nelson Bays division one club rugby competition kicks off. Nelson will host Stoke at Trafalgar Park from 1pm and coach Kade Heke is confident they’ll be more of a force than last year, when they failed to make the semifinals. “We’re in much better shape than we were this time last year. Last year we had college boys filling gaps in the backs but hopefully
we won’t have to do that this year.” Nelson has recruited several young stars from last year’s Press Cup competition, including lock Quentin Strange and full back Denvour Kiel from Nelson College and first five TC Campbell from Marlborough Boys College. Also back for his second season of division one rugby is Ethan Blackadder who last week was selected in the New Zealand under 20 squad. Kade says those young players will have plenty of experience to rub shoulders with. “Our pack’s looking as good as it has looked for a few years probably.

NelsoN Rugby Football Club "We have a few experienced guys that are also keen to any of the other teams. The other big game for us this year is the help out, the likes of Shane Grieve and Craig Moore and Noel Barton trophy, [played against current holders Waimea Old Boys] that’s massive for us.” Dan Climo.” Nelson has lost several of its star backs from last year The division two team is also looking at a top four finish this with David Havilli and Mitchell Scott playing Super year. Coach Chris Pugh says his young squad is brimming with Rugby, Ben Tyler moving out of the region and James talent and enthusiasm. “It’s exciting times. We have some really Lash moving to Waimea Old Boys. But it will have Rob- good club men in this team and they will help the young talent bie Malneek back, once he returns from playing rugby in coming through.” The division two team also starts its season this Saturday against Sri Lanka next month and a host of young players. The backline will be coached by former Makos captain Stoke at Neale Park, with a 4pm kick off. Andrew Goodman, who has spent the past few years playing for Leinster in Ireland and in Japan. He says he hopes to pass some of that experience on. “I was lucky enough to be able to travel and experience different cultures and be able to do what I ® love. There were some pretty outstanding coaches that I learnt a lot off, especially in Ireland, so hopefully I’ll be able to pass that on.” He says he’s enjoying the “different challenge” of coaching but still hopes to get out on the field in “June or July” after recovering from a knee injury. Kade says the team's goal is to reach the semi-finals and try to push on from there. “Every season the goal is to get as far as other Store locations you can. I’d love for us to make the semis Motueka – Takaka – Greymouth – Havelock and I think on their day any team can roll

Hayley won the 60m, 80m and 100m sprint treble as well as the long jump to win her title, while older brother Ben won the 60m and 100m sprints and long jump. Hayley and Ben were two of the four Athletics Nelson competitors to win Tasman championships that were decided on the number of points gained in all the events. Abby Morris won four events to take out the 7 girls title, Jordan StirlingRowling won four events to win the 12 boys. Many of the athletes at the championships, which also featured competitors from Marlborough, Richmond, Motueka and Takaka, will be in action at Saxton Field again this Sunday when Tasman takes on Canterbury in a team's competition.

For Nelson sisters Isabel and Georgia Norriss, ballet is not just an art, it is a passion and a way of life. Waimea College student Isabel, was accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance, as a classical major in the associates programme after auditioning in September last year. At 13 years old, she attends four weekends of tuition throughout the year at the prestigious dance school in Wellington. The Associates Programme identifies ballet and contemporary dance students who have the talent for a career in dance and places are strictly limited. Isabel is in a class of 12 dancers from around the country, who are assessed regularly and can only progress to the next level of the programme by invitation. “It was really exciting to be accepted, dancing makes me feel happy and I really want to get into the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Royal Ballet in London one day,” says Isabel. Her younger sister, 11 year old Georgia, has been dancing for six years and is as equally talented as her older sibling. She was accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance in the Scholars programme after

The programme provides training for classical ballet students from the age of 10 with dancers from the lower North Island invited to attend. Under special circumstances, students from other regions are invited and Georgia was approached to attend. Both sisters have been dancing for more than half of their young lives and study ballet at Nelson’s Rebecca Bignall Academy of Dance. They train seven days a week, which includes ballet classes, pilates, body conditioning and strengthen-
ing, and practicing routines. The talent doesn’t stop with the girls. Their mother Amanda represented New Zealand in Gymnastics and appreciates the high level of dedication required to compete at top level. Both girls will also perform in front of international judges at the highly regarded Alana Haines Australasian Awards, in Wellington at Easter. The dance event, which runs over four days, is the largest in Australasia, with over 430 entries and over $300,000 worth of awards and international training scholarships.
