Hailing from the deep south, Nelson Marlborough Health’s (NMH) Chief Executive Lexie

O’Shea comes to the position with experience having been chief operating officer and deputy chief executive of Southland’s hospitals during Invercargill Hospital’s rebuild. Plans to rebuild Nelson Hospi-

tal have been in the pipeline for more than a decade but are now supposed to get underway this term of government. Lexie says the rebuild is exciting and she is committed to working to the timeframe set by the Minister

of Health. “The hospital rebuild is important but it’s not a twoyear event,” says Lexie. “So we are looking at changes in the interim. It’s amazing how creative and cost effective we can be. Administration offices are being re-

located creating space for clinical services.” Lexie is passionate about health promotion and preventing the need for hospital care where

New boss, new healthcare initiatives from PAGE 1 possible. For personal health she walks or runs most days and encourages walking meetings with staff. For the region’s healthcare it means delivering care in a contemporary way. Lessons learned during lockdown have been valuable with telehealth now available in various departments, including oncology. Patients can access care from the comfort of home, surrounded by support rather than battling for a carpark and catching a shuttle. Lexie says the hospital is only a small part of health services, but it is an expensive part. “Hospitals are there for complex and episodic-type cares, and the rest is in the community.” One of her major focuses is better health outcomes for the more vulnerable in the community.

There is discussion around delivering care to families rather than to individuals, providing healthcare outside the typical 8am to 5pm model and teams going to where vulnerable people are, rather than asking them to access health services. “Think whanau, not just a broken arm,” she says. Lexie is very aware of the high number of over 65s in the community and sees it as very important to support community initiatives that help keep them fit and healthy. The introduction of ‘swoop teams’ who go to patients and deliver early intervention help keep people in their own homes and out of hospital where possible. They also support rest homes to ensure residents can avoid hospital admittance unless needed. Elective surgery waiting lists are met with a national scoring tool.

Chief Executive Lexie o’Shea outside her current office. Photo: Jenny Nicholson. While she admits the tool isn’t perfect, Lexie is proud of how NMH has performed, achieving 110 per cent of the Government’s target in 2019-2020.

For hip replacements, the goal is for a patient to be seen within 100 days of referral and to have had surgery within another 100 days. “We have a superb team of peo-

ple going above and beyond. The admin team are the glue and it’s a big team effort. Lockdown was a blip in the timeframes, but we are working hard to be back on track in 18 months to two years,” she says. Alongside keeping quality care central, staff well-being and health is a priority. She says healthcare is evolving with patient portals like Manage My Health giving people the ability to communicate with their GP without being seen every time they need something. “We want to move from ‘what can we do’ to ‘what matters to you?’” says Lexie. She welcomes discussion, knowing that good ideas come from different people seeing the world in different ways. “We can’t always change things but we can always talk it through,” she says.

Seatbelts should be saving lives on farms Jenny Nicholson Nearly half the vehicle-related fatalities occuring on farms could be avoided if a seatbelt was used, according to WorkSafe. Nelson Federated Farmers President Martin O’Connor says familiarity and tiredness are factors in not using seatbelts. “People can make mistakes when tired and that’s a big problem. Some have farmed for a long time and haven’t got into the habit of taking precautions,” says Martin. WorkSafe figures show fatatlities on farms are consistently highest in the 60 to 65 years

age group. “Putting your seatbelt on is the simplest task and one we do on

open roads. Doing the same on the farm would save lives,” says WorkSafe’s Al McCone.

(TDC) has formally asked the Nelson City Council to double its contribution to the Waimea Community Dam to $10.5 million. The Tasman District Council is awaiting a formal response to that request.

Lifestyle magazine Wild Tomato has ceased trading after 15 years. The title, which covers the Top of the South, had been for sale since last year, but the publication has now made the decision to close its doors for good.

Crashes spoil race for George

The Paris-Nice race was cyclist George Bennet’s first opportunity to wear his recently-won National jersey. A crash on day two resulted in a broken helmet and George initially feeling a bit groggy, but he was cleared by the race doctor to continue. With 33 km remaining in the race, he rejoined the peloton before the finish line.

Structures are rising in Richmond West Jacqui Rawson It’s not only houses rising like mushrooms out of the meadows in Richmond West. New pathways, a bridge and a shopping complex are all underway as part of The Meadows’ rapidly growing development. A multiscreen cinema is also being built as part of the Berryfields Crossing development situated

Overcome financial stress

just off Lower Queen Street. Cinema chain Silky Otter is due to open the still-to-bebuilt complex by the end of the year. The pouring of a concrete floor for The Meadows’ commercial area, called Central Park, was completed last week. The vertical superstructure will house an array of facilities. Jo Taylor, general manager for The Meadows, says, “Central Park will have a café, bar and restaurant, dairy, hairdresser and an early childhood learning centre.”

The plan is to have some or all of the facilities open by October this year. “Things are really starting to take shape and each week so much more has been developed,” says Jo. In addition to those plans, a new two-lane, 70m-long vehicle bridge had one of its four piers poured with 20m3 of concrete recently with further in ground foundations for all other piers expected to be completed last week. It crosses the Borck Creek along Berryfield Drive which

will connect the two halves of the development at a cost of $1.9 million. Contractors have also been constructing a large section of shared path along the Borck Creek reserve. This shared pathway is part of a project to build a 750-metre path for cycling and walking. Two bridges over Borck Creek have already been completed. Eventually, it will extend to the Great Taste Trail, but first another section through the Eastern Hills drain will have to be built.

Negative found in bathroom renovation 10th March 2021

Ivan Stevens has had the mystery of the wedding party negative found in his bathroom wall explained. Jim Hill rang Ivan after seeing the article in the paper, saying he grew up with the men in the photo in Waimangaroa,

near Westport, but that unfortunately all are now deceased. The church the wedding party is standing in front of is St. Canices in Westport. Jim visited Ivan’s house when it belonged to the groom from the photo, he thinks in the 1980s. Coincidentally, the bathroom was going through renovations at the time of his visit and may account for why the negative ended up inside the bathroom wall. Megan Leslie emailed Ivan and said she believes it’s her mum that is chief bridesmaid and that the wedding took place in February 1957.

Nelson Matters New Zealand should take up Australia’s offer of opening up a Trans-Tasman bubble allowing families to reunite, skilled workers in and to boost our ailing tourism sector. We are a year into the Covid pandemic. I was totally supportive of the blunt boarder closure last year and the lockdown, but we now need a more sophisticated approach. Australia, like New Zealand,

has mostly eliminated Covid. Cities like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth have had fewer recent cases than Auckland and longer periods with no community cases. It makes no sense to have the same 14 day quarantine rules for people coming from Australia, as for people coming from countries like the US, UK and India where Covid is rampant. We know from the

MIQ Covid testing that we are getting lots of cases out of these countries but not out of Australia. We should still require travellers from Australia to have a test before boarding a plane. We can isolate a region or state where needed if there were localised reoccurrences. A Trans-Tasman bubble would make a huge difference to thousands of families and businesses. I have dozens of heart

breaking stories from Nelsonians of family members dying alone, people seriously unwell and families desperate to be reunited. We have many tourism businesses on the brink of bankruptcy in places like Queenstown and Franz Josef but also here in Nelson and Tasman. Thousands of jobs are at risk. The Government cannot go on borrowing to bail them out and

nor should they when there is a safe way to re-open tourism with Australia. We know a lot more about Covid than a year ago and we have many more tools to manage it. We need to get on with saliva testing, vaccine passports and risk rate our border controls. It is time to take a smarter approach. Advert.

Maggy’s international win Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Maggy Johnston’s creativity and willingness to share her knowledge with others has led to two recent wins, one local and one international. She is part of the local business, NZ Textile Experiences, who won the Best Creative Experience at the World Creative Tourism Awards held in Barcelona. “We are interested in creating unique hands-on textile experiences for both locals and visitors to the region. Our focus on sustainability and community involvement got a big tick from the judges and contributed to our win,” says workshops coordinator Colleen Plank. She said Maggy’s creations and workshops are both unconventional and unique. One of these creations is a crocheted ball made of 1001 unwanted garments, which Maggy thinks weighs around 300kg. She would like to make a statement and raise awareness of the fashion industry’s waste by rolling the ball through town. Maggy makes use of materials others may not have thought of. When a friend saw solenoids from a church’s organ about to be thrown out, he thought of her, and the tiny wires resulted in a gossamer fine costume based on her

Having recently been the recipient of life-saving care at Nelson Public Hospital, may I utilise your newspaper to convey my appreciation to those involved. I am deeply indebted to Dr Carmen Ruiz, ably assisted by Dr Ros Pochin and their specialised theatre crew, for the skilful diagnosis and subsequent surgery. Although words seem hopelessly inadequate, ‘thank you, thank you, for your persistence and expertise’. To all those other carers who played an important part in my recuperation, from senior nursing staff to those with seemingly more menial duties, please accept my gratitude for your patience and attention. fRoM PAGE 1 Whether they are orienteering, cycling or kayaking, team 604060’s training will always end at a coffee house. Pip Little (66), Lee McMurtrie (67) and Ariana Walker (41) form the adventure racing team who competed in the all-women Summer Challenge last weekend. The name is a nod to the women’s ages, with Pip and Lee both taking up the sport in their 60s. With her daughter-in-law

Ariana already involved, Pip and Lee opted to put their hands up. “We just saw the fun they were having, and we thought we should have a go. I am just lucky to have a daughter-in-law who doesn’t mind running around with two oldies.” After finishing their first Spring Challenge in 2017, the trio has been slowly building towards this weekend’s 24km multi-race. This has meant up to five training sessions per week, often starting as early

as 7am. Saturday’s race saw more than 750 women compete in teams with no more than 50 metres separating them at any time. Team 604060 raced in the ‘super veterans’ category. The three women say they each bring their individual strengths to the table. “You all have a discipline as your favoured one - Lee is amazing at running downhill, mine is probably the bike while Ari is good at everything,” says Pip. Ari says they complement

each other nicely. “Right down to the coffee orders.” The women say the event is incredibly empowering. “To see 700-plus women out there doing what they enjoy, it’s very rewarding.” Lee says it doesn’t matter your age or fitness level or background, everyone just jumps in together. “I have never felt too old, they embrace everyone.” The Summer Challenge was founded by adventure racing couple Nathan and Jodie Fa’avae, after the popularity of the Spring Challenge.

The children at Waimea Kindergarten welcomed Tasman Mayor, Tim King, along to share a morning tea and celebrate their Silver Reflection Award from the Enviroschool Programme last week. The kindy received the award as they have incorporated the Enviroschools policies into all aspects of teaching, including a butterfly house, which has reared and released over 50 monarchs, sunflower growing, a worm farm, and a community food garden complete with bug hotel and weta house. “It’s important to teach kids the basics when it comes to looking after the environment they live in,” says Tim. “We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful area, so if we can teach children at this age to respect and care for nature, all the better.” Photo: Jo Kent.

Nominate a neighbour Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Do you live next door to someone who deserves recognition? Or maybe down the road from a great neighbour who is always putting themselves out for others? Well, now is the time to get them noticed. Neighbourhood Support NZ is running awards for people who have demonstrated excellence in supporting the principles of safety, resilience and connectedness within their local community. There are three separate categories that they can be nominated for. The first is ‘Champions’, which is for NS individuals who go above and beyond. Then there is ‘Projects’ which are run by local NS organisations within the Tasman District, and lastly, ‘Partners’ which rewards emergen-

cy services and community organisations who have positively supported NS in the community. The awards acknowledge work undertaken between 2018 and 2020. Nominations close on Friday 26th March. To make a nomination, go to tsns.org.nz, become a member (it’s free) and email admin@tsns. org.nz. Nominations will be considered by the Tasman Awards Committee who will select one winner for each category. The three winners will then progress to judging at national level by NSNZ, competing against other winners from around the country. There were no national winners from the Nelson Tasman region last year, so Neighbourhood Support Coordinator Aniquah Stevenson says, “Get your nominations in as it would be great to get our local heroes recognised.”

Home Expo in Motueka. The following one, although not yet confirmed, is earmarked for the 28th March, at the Richmond Aquatic Centre’s Family Fun Day. For more information, or if you know of an event or organisation in the Tasman District that would like a visit from the pop-up library, contact Lucy at lucy.carver@tasman.co.nz, or contact the library on 03 543 8500.

The Tasman District Library is heading outdoors by showing up in various locations around the region. From the pop-up library, the public are able to sign up for and renew memberships, borrow books from the pop-up collection and get help accessing the free library e-resources. It’s also a place where people learn about the free services and events that are on offer at Tasman District Library branches, such as the Book a Librarian service and the various children’s and young adults’ programmes. “We’re looking forward to surprising people with the quirky pop-up stand in places they do not traditionally expect to see a library,” says community engagement and outreach specialist Lucy Carver. Showcasing dancing talent Jacqui Rawson Dance production Soar will be a 45-minute celebration of a diverse selection of local dance talent, come April. Forty advanced level dancers from six studios across the Nelson Tasman region will be unveiling their talent along with two professional dancers from Auckland. “You don’t have to be a dancer to be captivated

and appreciate the performance,” says show producer, Gemma Laing. As well as being a chance for the community to experience local talent it’s a chance for the mostly teenage dancers to experience being in a semi-professional show. Gemma has engaged two professional dancers, Kayla Paige and Andrew Cesan from Momentum Produc-

tions in Auckland. The pair, renowned on the New Zealand dance scene, are working with the students and will perform a piece as part of the show. The show will showcase a broad range of dances from tap to hiphop and is geared to the wider community. The shows are on 9th and 10th April. Tickets from trybooking.co.nz/GMP (search keyword Soar).

In a dramatic turn of events, the team at Snowden’s Bush Trust have received almost all of their $350k target, with generous donations last week pushing the total amount raised to $340k. “The end is in sight and SAVE it’s all thanks to the ’ help and support of SNOWDEN S the local community,” say Karen Wheeler, a trustee. “We just want to say how grateful we are.” The news couldn’t have come at a better time, as this Sunday is the free Snowden’s Bush Family Fun Day from 1pm-4pm in Brightwater. With live music from acoustic duo Kramit, along with 40 stalls and food carts, and kids’ entertainment, it’s not to be missed. “We’ve been waiting for this day since last November when it was rained off,” says Karen. “The free event is our way of saying thank you. It will remind everyone just how essential this green space is in our community.” The land the event takes place on - which is home to ancient tōtara trees, some of which are several hundred years old, and other native plants and wildlife, such as tui, bellbirds and kereru - was being sold for housing development until locals decided to step in and raise the money to buy it themselves and gift it back to the Department of Conservation keeping it in the public domain forever. The group have until November this year to raise the final $10k. If you would like a stall at the event, contact Karen on 021 0267 1940 or email wheelerkl@hotmail.com. Or to make a donation, visit snowdensbushtrust.nz.

The early history of Richmond Park Kirstan Robinson Richmond Park, located on Lower Queen Street has a long and interesting history. There is much more to Richmond Park than just horse racing, woodchopping, Ferris wheels and candyfloss. The story of Richmond Park begins with Francis Otterson (c.1797-1854) a long-standing proponent of Agricultural Shows in the region who was the first to own the two sections that make up the 100 acres of Richmond Park. The first Crown Grant was issued to him in October 1851 for section 218 and the following year one was issued for section 219. These sections were

part of his large farm where his homestead ‘Rostrevor’, named by him after his home village in Ireland, stood. The lone gigantic gum tree stump at the corner of the Park is evidence of Mr Otterson’s early work on the land. He planted this gum, along with others, around 1853. The gum trees would be an iconic and contentious feature of Lower Queen Street for over 150 years with the last tree, now the lone stump, felled in October 2005. After Otterson’s death the land remained in the family until 1870 when it was purchased by Mr G. William McRae. McRae’s daughter had married Mr Charles Canning and they took over the land as well as Francis’s

the land in 1876, as well as their 1876 and 1877 Shows, instead of at the Richmond Cattle Fairgrounds which they had used previously. In 1884 when Charles returned to England, the Nelson Jockey

and Trotting Clubs purchased the 100 acres. However, in 1895, the Nelson Jockey Club defaulted on the mortgage and the ownership of the Park was returned to the McRae family in June 1896. Despite this, the Nelson Jockey and Trotting Clubs continued to run their activities by leasing the use of the Park and eventually buying their own adjoining land. In 1918 Premier, the Hon. Richard Seddon provided a $800 subsidy which was reclassed as a ‘gift’ by the Government as the result of ‘special legislation’ which enabled the Association to be able to raise a mortgage so they could rebuild the grandstand that had been destroyed in 1917 by fire.

Well, what a week! When the alert level change came through, it was all go, phone calls, meeting etc, to get procedures/plans in place to carry on with the dart tournament Once this was all approved and the go ahead given by Clubs NZ, Clubs NZ Darts Association, Club Waimea, local Police, it was all go. Massive thank you to everyone that was involved. Club Waimea

and Phil’s Place management and staff went above and beyond to make smooth running for the dart players under the restrictions. All the wonderful volunteers throughout the week, working hard, making the tournament a great experience for SI dart players. Thank you to our sponsors, Nite n Day Richmond, Club Waimea housie ladies, Mac Automotive,

Dianne and Kathy, The Bodyshop, Patons Rock Beach Villas, Adventure Inn Marahau, Quality Automotive also thank you to Waimea Print. Very proud of our club and the dart players were very thankful and appreciative to be able to play. Some amazing darts were thrown over the week; our own players performed well. I don’t have all the results but here are some: La-

dies Singles Main Round, Nicole Mears made 9th equal, Tara and Shannon 16th equal and were selected for the S.I ladies’ team. Well done. In the plate round Jo Ealam made the final and was runner up – awesome darts! In the Ladies’ Pairs main round, Shannon and Tara were 3rd equal, and in the plate round Karen and Barbara also came 3rd equal. In the mixed pairs main round, Steven and Shannon got 5th equal

and Kelvin and Nicole, John and Tara came 16th equal. In the Mens’ Singles main round, Tony Mac, Steven C and Sam T came 17th equal. In the plate round, John McIlroy took in out winning the plate. Well done John. Wayne was presented with the personality trophy for Club Waimea and a cup to acknowledge great work hosting the tournament. Once again, thank you all.

Club Waimea members get to enjoy the many benefits of club membership with lots of fun, laughter and a wide variety of activities to be part of, including regular housie sessions, a gaming room and entertainment and line dancing classes which are always well attended. There are also lots of sporting opportunities such as darts, pool, squash and bowls.

Clubs & aCtivities

Have you thought about becoming a member of Club Waimea and joining one or more of our many sports sections?

Fortunately the 53rd South Island Darts Tournament 2021 was able to go ahead at Club Waimea recently. The organisers and volunteers worked really hard, making the tournament a great experience for S.I dart players. Club Waimea’s own players performed well in various ladies’ and men’s rounds and in the plate round, John Mcllory took home the winning plate.

Manager’s Snippett’s Wayne Williams Hi everyone, what a strange couple of weeks it has been. Suddenly along came another Covid -19 Alert Level change, right on top of hosting the South Island Darts Champs, but through a lot of planning and cooperation the event was able to go ahead, as you can read in the Darts article. On top of that, Club Waimea Golf Section, along with Greenacres Golf Club, were to host the Clubs NZ Men’s Pairs Golf, but this was unfortunately cancelled, BUT half of the field decided that they would come to Nelson anyway, play golf, and enjoy themselves, so the week turned out to be one of laughter and enjoyment. I wish to thank all our members who were able to come along under the heavy restrictions, to support the dart players, or con-

versely stayed away to enable darts supporters and partners the opportunity to attend. Totally awesome from my point of view. See the picture of our new van, yet to be sign written but watch this space. Our Courtesy Van is available Thursday thru Saturday, and for whatever reasons, is only patronised by a small number of people. I think our new van will be more appealing, as it is far easier to get in and out of and has far more room in it. So, come on members, make use of a great resource, ably manned by volunteers, so your cost is merely a donation. By the time I write my next snippet, I am hoping that I will be able to report on another Gaming Upgrade, with some new machines on their way, and a solid update on the new carparking facility, which is slowly progressing.

Volunteer Fire Fighters Awareness Fire Safety Checklist

Buying a smoke alarm

To avoid a fire in your home, there is a comprehensive checklist available on the Fire and Emergency New Zealand website, which includes things like: making sure there are smoke alarms installed in every bedroom, living area and hallway, keeping your stovetop free of any spilled fats or burnt food, making sure flammable liquids in sheds are stored in appropriate containers, and making sure your fireplace has a proper screen/ fireguard. Outside your property, recommendations include removing overhanging branches, cleaning all dead leaves from your roof and gutters and clearing thick vegetation within 10 metres of windows.

Hard-wired or battery operated? Wherever possible, Fire and Emergency New Zealand recommend that hard-wired and interconnected smoke alarms are installed. If your alarms cannot be hard-wired, they recommend long-life photoelectric smoke alarms that rely on long-life lithium batteries. Inbuilt longlife lithium batteries last as long as the smoke alarm so you don’t need to worry about replacing them every year – you simply replace the entire smoke alarm unit once every 10 years. There are several specialised smoke alarms available for people who are deaf or hearing impaired. You can find out more on the the Fire and Emergency New Zealand website: www.fireandemergency.nz. Photoelectric vs. Ionisation? Smoke alarms use either photoelectric or ionisation sensors to detect smoke. Some have both types of sensor (“dual” models).

Fire and Emergency New Zealand recommends longlife photoelectric smoke alarms Photoelectric smoke alarms are typically more effective at detecting slow smouldering fires, which burn for hours before bursting into flame. Ionisation smoke alarms are typically more effective at detecting fast flaming fires, which burn and spread quickly.

Unsure which type you have? Ionisation models require a tiny amount of radioactive material to make them work. You can identify one by the radiation symbol found on the plastic body. The Residential Tenancy Act requires landlords to install and replace expired smoke alarms with long-life battery photoelectric smoke alarms. Further information can be found at: https:// www.tenancy.govt.nz/maintenance-and-inspections/smokealarms/ Do not install a smoke alarm in your kitchen. Smoke and heat from cooking and the toaster can set off the alarm. Don’t install them in the bathroom, laundry or garage either. You can buy heat alarms for these areas. How many do I need? Smoke alarms cannot detect smoke through a closed door. Therefore, it’s recommended that you install a smoke alarm in every bedroom, hallway and living area. NB: The New Zealand Building Code requires an approved smoke alarm to be fitted in every escape route (hallway) and within three metres of every sleeping space (bedroom) door. Smoke alarms are available for purchase at most major supermarkets and hardware stores across New Zealand. Prices range from $6 - $75. For more information, visit www. fireandemergency.nz.

The site for the new Appleby Fire Station is coming along in leaps and bounds. Site foreman, Gavin Tietjens of Scott Construction says there was a couple of weeks where it looks like nothing is happening. This is when the ground that had been dug out and levelled has a chance to settle into its final position. They’re currently in the process of preparing everything ready for the concrete to be poured next Monday. After that, the structural steel will start to go up and it will begin to take on the look of a building. The new building will be on the corner of the Moutere Highway and Redwood Valley Road. It will provide easier access, more room for vehicles and be in closer proximity to emergency civil defence equipment than the current Appleby Fire Station on the Appleby Highway. The new location is due for completion in July this year. “The new building will also provide a great central community facility,” says Appleby Fire Station deputy controller, Bella Clark-Melchers.

It’s St Patrick’s Day today. So what? You may ask. Who was St Patrick anyway and why is his life celebrated over 1500 years after his death? Despite its Irish Catholic origin, the day has become more a cultural celebration than a religious celebration. St Patrick’s Day has become a full day of revelry and street parades with hundreds of thousands participating and millions watching. To get a local opinion I asked local Catholic priest, Father Seph Pijfers for his thoughts about St Patrick, St Patrick’s Day and sainthood. St Patrick was the son of a privileged family who, when he was 16 was kidnapped by slave traders and taken to Ireland where he was sold as a slave. It was during his captivity as a prisoner in a foreign land, he was lonely, isolated, suffered hunger almost died, but he had a life-changing

edged as being a true Saint and honoured with the title after his death, because of his radical love for God and for others, having lived a life of extraordinary influence through humble service, sacrifice and suffering, even though he was not like many Saints who were martyred for their beliefs. My conclusion is that St Patrick is deserving of honour and St Patrick’s Day should be celebrated, because even as a young man his life was shaped by great suffering and great love and rather than becoming bitter he became better. I think immediately of Joseph who was sold into slavery by his brothers, yet he was able to tell them “what you intended for evil, God intended for GOOD” and of Jesus who was able to say about all who were responsible for his death: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” A challenge for us all is to allow our pain and suffering to transform us rather than transmitting it to others.

encounter with God. After six years he escaped and made his way miraculously across land and sea back to his home and family in Wales and yet, despite his traumatic experiences he resolved to return to Ireland and after years of study he returned as an ordained priest and was hugely influential in the conversion of Ireland from paganism to Christianity. Although much of his life remains a mystery, he is recognised as the foremost Patron Saint of Ireland with some even calling him the Father of Christianity in Ireland. Several miracles have been attributed to him and, as well, legend has it that he used the national flower of Ireland, the shamrock or three leafed clover to explain the doctrine of the Holy Trinity, that God is ONE, but three persons Father, Son and Holy Spirit. A hit - tennis hot shots

Jacqui Rawson

The Tennis Hot Shots Summer Series is making the game more accessible and kidfriendly to children in the region and is proving popular. The court size has been adapted and the balls and racquets are more suitable for kids, making it easier for age five upwards to have fun while introducing them to the tennis experience. “The events give the kids the

opportunity to play together, meet friends and get to know the local club and coach,” says event organiser, Nelson Bays Regional Coordinator, Muriel Ronen. Local primary schools have hopped on board with the Nelson Bays Tennis Association, local tennis clubs and their tennis coaches to provide a pathway from school, to social and club play. The culmination of the introductory lessons in school is

the Tennis Hot Shots Summer Series which is a themed competition made up of a series of 11 events. Each event is held at a different tennis club locally. The ‘Super Hero Slam’ was held on 13th March at the Stoke Tennis Club. The next Hot Shots event, the ‘Easter Hop’ will be on 27th March at the Mapua Club. For more details about the programme, contact the Nelson Bays Tennis Association or your local tennis club.

WEDNESDAY 17 March 2021

Action-packed two days on Lake Rotoiti Joe Blakiston Organisers of The ENZED Rotoiti Power boat club were rewarded with a perfect result over the weekend with an outstanding event held over two days. ‘Organise it and they will come.’ This certainly seems to be true of any Tasman event in post Covid New Zealand, says event organiser Joe Blakiston. Joe could not be happier with the way the two days turned out.

“The National regatta was held last Saturday and we got through an ambitious programme of 37 races from the powerful GP hydroplanes right through to the entertaining clubman racers. Close racing was provided all day,” he says. Local driver Julian Stilwell retained his Formula 1 national title driving his Johnston Associates craft. However, his Sunday racing ended with engine issues. Likewise, Formula 3 was taken out by local driver Jason Stewart in his reli-

s t n e d n e p e d n i e h t Last of

able craft The Ghost who raced consistently over the two days. All other events had close results with Blenheim driver, Nigel Wiblin, proving reliability is the key with his 40-year-old boat, Tammatha, securing 2nd place in two very competitive classes in a boat that never missed a beat all weekend. The Grand National Hydroplane title was won by Invercargill driver Shane Harvey in his boat Renegade. Continuing what was a great South Island regatta. The crowd favourite was the massive field of nine. The GP Hydroplanes who raced fiercely over the two days with Waverley driver Ken Lupton continuing his recent dominance

with the National GP title. He also did well by winning the four round Hydro Thunder Series with a masterful drive from the least-favoured pole six position on the start line. The sight of six V8 powered craft approaching turn one at close to 200 km p/h was heart stopping for those on the shore. It’s also the reason behind many spectators coming back year on year. The event was not without incidents however, with several spectacular crashes testing event safety procedures and rescue crews who all performed with absolute distinction. Joe said the crowds gathered, were the biggest in years and

positive feedback was very encouraging especially in relation to the standard of commentary, the consistent racing and the lunchtime warbird flyover from the Blenheim-based Yak 3 Full Noise. “We have a few things to work on for next year to make it even better than it was this time around, but the sunshine and perfect lake conditions absolutely sealed the event’s success,” says Joe. As always the club was thankful for the many volunteers who helped put on an impressive event as well as DOC, rescue teams and local community groups who all contribute to a great outcome. Roll on 2022.

Marchfest is a celebration of craft beer, music, and food. Dubbed ‘NZ’s Big Little Craft Beer Festival,’ Marchfest is celebrating its 14th year. Rain or shine, the event will take place this Saturday, 20 March from noon until 9.30pm at Founders Heritage Park. Nelson being New Zealand’s sole hop growing area, Marchfest is positioned right amongst the abundant hop harvest season. The 15 selected craft breweries from around the country have crafted brand new brews specifically for the festival. With beer of course goes music, with ten live bands featuring headliner Racing, The Eastern, Hoody Time, DJ Tunesifter, Sonoraw, Tim Allen & The Two, Rocket Zombie and more. The ever-popular Cryer Malt Brew Zone is back this year. It’s your chance to learn everything you need to know about making your own great craft beer at home. Festival-goers can also pop into the dedicated FlexiTenz Tasting Bar. Marchfest is not just all about beer. It’s also

about local wines, ciders and juices, and there will be over 15 artisan food vendors to satisfy all tastes. A fun day out for the whole family, the GK Events Kid’s Zone will be packed with activities. Marchfest is a zero waste event, with recycling options and compost bins provided. The festival will also be promoting responsible drinking and is making safe transport options available. These include a free courtesy van which travel to Founders Park from Nelson I-site every 30 minutes from

11:45am to 6:00pm. A free bus will run from Founders Park to town every 30 minutes from 6:00pm to 10:30pm. The event is free for under 18’s and they must be accompanied by parent or guardian. Marchfest 2021 is gearing up to be an awesome family-friendly event - see you there!
