Nelson has cup fever
From the calm waters of Nelson Haven on Sunday morning to the choppy San Francisco Bay, Nelsonians are excited about the America’s Cup and the possibility of it being in Kiwi hands by tomorrow morning. On Sunday, local sailor Rohan O’Neill-Stevens, 13, (pictured right) tried to emulate his Emirates Team New Zealand heroes, going for a sail with friend Rebecca Newnham, 12, just hours after watching the races at home and a week before the local season starts at the Nelson Yacht Club. In San Francisco, Nelsonians there say watching Team New Zealand race is once in a lifetime moment and they can’t wait for Dean Barker to get his hands on the cup. Former Nayland College teacher Andrew Marshall, who has been teaching in San Francisco for a year, told Nelson Weekly the atmosphere

Natureland saved again Natureland doesn’t have any cats in its zoo, but it shares their ability to use up a fair few of their allocated lives. “I think it is a really good idea. A lot of petrol theft has been going on lately.”
“I probably wouldn’t care, they should have made it prepay from the start.”
“I don’t want to prepay because I always fill my car up. It would be very inconvenient so I’d go elsewhere.”
“It sounds fair enough. They are just protecting their business from theft. They can’t afford to lose money, especially nowadays.”

Stolen petrol forces 24 hour pre pay policy Andrew Board

A new type of fuel theft has forced the owners of two local petrol stations into a new pre pay policy. John and Maureen Gifkins own Mobil Tahuanui and Mobil Stoke and introduced the 24 hour pre pay policy about a month ago. They say it was in response to some customers who would put petrol in their cars and then come in to pay, knowing their eftpos cards would decline. John says they do that because once they “attempt” to pay it’s no longer seen as a fuel theft but a civil matter, so police don’t get involved. That leaves him trying to get his money back and he says it’s been happening more and more recently so they’ve had to act. “Pre pay happens up north in the big cities and I believe it’s happening down south as well in Christchurch and other places. We didn’t want to be the first ones in Nelson to do it but we need to make a living, that’s what it’s all about.” Police confirmed stolen petrol is an issue but don’t have figures because a lot of stations

Mobil in Tahunanui is one of two petrol stations that have introduced a 24 hour pre pay policy to stop fuel theft. deal with it themselves. John says enough is enough. “It leaves us out of pocket and we can’t keep going like that or we won’t be able to pay our bills or pay our staff. It’s like any business.” The new policy means that customers drive up and pay for the petrol inside before pumping it into their cars. Once the petrol is in they simply drive off. Maureen says the policy did have an impact on their staff when it was first introduced as some customers became abusive but it has been getting much better as people get used to the policy. “Initially we took a bit of verbal from people that were not happy about it or unsure about it. But it’s getting
better and now people understand why.” They say they expect other service stations in Nelson to follow suit but aren’t concerned if they do or not. “This isn’t about anyone else, this is what we need to do for our business. It hasn’t been easy but we’re sticking to our guns on this, we need to.” John wouldn’t say how much money is owed to the company from theft, or those unable to pay, but says he is successful in chasing some of the money himself, but not enough to carry on as he was. “People that owe us money will still come in to buy petrol and when we hit them up about it they say ‘na, it was my friend in my car’. What can we do?”

Waterfront plans unveiled The first plans for a potential waterfront development on council-owned land were unveiled on Friday night and mayor Aldo Miccio says it will fill in the missing link between the city and Tahunanui beach. Around 150 people gathered in the Theatre Royal to see the plans and hear a presentation from its architects about the development on land around the Reliance Engineering building and the Custom House Hotel. Aldo – who hosted the event with councillor Pete Rainey – says the plans show room for retail space and hospitality venues with a walking cycleway running through it. He says it could connect with the proposed walking cycle promenade on Rocks Rd and the walking cycleway from Rutherford Park, which will be built up to the Reliance building. “It’s the missing link between the beach and the city and if it goes ahead it will provide a cycle walkway from the city to the beach which is what the city needs.” The plans and design will to go out for tender, with the council hoping a developer will come in and take over the project, meaning the cost to ratepayers would be zero.“Developers will put in a

ON AS POSSIBLE. NOTE THAT ANY ALTERATIONS ED BY OUR MATERIAL DEADLINE. A fundraising effort by the Car Company is vital to the survival of the women’s and children’s refuge, says its manager Trudie Brand. For the month of September, the Car Company is taking to the streets to raise money for the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge. On September 27 they will host a quiz evening at the Suburban Club, with all proceeds going to the Nelson refuge. It’s the second year the Nelson business has got in behind the cause, last year raising $18,000. Trudie says the refuge runs on a shoestring budget and the money raised is used to help keep the service alive. “Without the money raised by the Car Company we wouldn’t be able to provide the service we do. If we didn’t have the money we’d be back where we were in the 70s and 80s. We wouldn’t have a community office, we’d rely solely on volunteers and our women and children wouldn’t be as safe.” So far there has been two street collections with another to be held at Sundial Square in Richmond tomorrow. There will
be a collection at the Tasman Makos game at Trafalgar Park on Sunday and another on Trafalgar St next Wednesday. Trudie says she’s grateful for Nelson refuge the support of manager locals who have Trudi Brand. reached in their pockets to donate. “This is an issue that affects everybody, every neighbourhood in Nelson is affected. Wealthy people, lower social economic communities, middle class people, everyone. It’s across the board, it’s everywhere so it’s great that people donate to help us continue to do our work. It means a lot to those we help,” she says. If you’d like to donate money to the refuge or an item to be auctioned at the quiz night, or would like to book a table at the quiz night on Friday, September 27, simply call Belinda Koloamatangi at the Car Company on 546 6550 ext. 7 or call 027 323 7105.

Birth rate lowest in 5 years 24 hour gym Sinead Ogilvie
Nelson has recorded the lowest number of births in five years according to new figures released by Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. There were 875 babies born in Nelson in the year ending 2012, down on the 1011 the year before, contributing to the lowest number of births for the top of the south since 2008. David Weston says Snap Fitness will open in Gloucester St in October but the international franchisee began its membership drive in Nelson yesterday. He says there are a group of owners that will run the Nelson gym with the hope of opening another in Richmond next year. He says Snap is an international brand with gyms all over the world and its success is in its ease of use. Members are given swipe cards which allows them to access the gym any time of day or night and no contracts mean members just need to give 30 days’ notice to give up their membership. Another strike against pest butterfly A busy week for council candidates A team of 25 Department of Conservation workers will search every property in the Nelson region for a second time, as it intensifies the strike against the great white butterfly. DOC has set up a dedicated team to carry out concentrated searches of gardens to look for and remove the pest butterfly caterpillars and eggs because it poses a major threat to home and commercial brassica crops and endangered native cresses. Project manager Bruce Vander Lee says knocking back the pest butterfly’s breeding spikes in spring and autumn was critical to achieving its eradication, which is why another 20 people had joined the team after a quiet winter. “We put in an intensive effort against a great white butterfly in the autumn breeding spurt, searching out and removing infestations and we are hoping as a result there will be fewer butterflies to set off its spring breeding burst,” he says. “But that will be determined in how many infestations our field staff find and the public report to us in coming weeks. With many Nelson and Tasman residents out in their gardens, tending to plants at this time of the year, Bruce is asking them to keep watch for the caterpillars and eggs, and says leaves that

however, infestations were also found in Richmond last summer. DOC launched the great white butterfly eradication programme in November last year. Agencies supporting it include MPI, Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Vegetables NZ. The project has carried out more than 28,000 garden searches since it started and 850 butterfly infestations have been found and removed since it was first discovered in a Nelson city garden in 2010.

RACHEL REESE FOR YOUR NELSON MAYOR Authorised by RJ Harden, 137 Milton Street, Nelson 7010
With voting papers due in residents’ letter boxes this Friday, candidates standing for council and the mayor’s office will have to face the music at several “meet the candidate” events. There have already been some, the latest a “meet the female candidate’ evening held by the Nelson Council of Women Nelson Branch last week and the “market day” event held at the Nelson Suburban Club last weekend. Tonight the Nelson Residents Association is hosting a meet the candidate evening at the Trafalgar Centre. Each candidate will have two minutes on the podium to address the public, followed by questions from the audience. All Nelson ratepayers are invited to attend. On Thursday night, Grey Power is hosting a meet the candidate forum at the Suburban Club from 7pm. Attendees must be Grey Power members and will need to bring their cards to get in the door. Next Monday, September 23, Sport Tasman is hosting a mayoral debate at Sports House at Saxton Field, dubbed “thought on sport”. Voting opens for the election on Friday and closes on October 12. All ratepayers will have the opportunity to vote for the mayor and councillors they would like to see represent them over the next three years. But traditionally only about 50 per cent of people take the time to send their voting packs back. Secretary of the Nelson Residents Association, Ken Meredith, says the evenings have been successful in the past. "We want people to be informed before voting in the elections on October 12. [Tonight] the public can hear the new applicants and those seeking re-election state their views. There will be opportunities to ask questions about rates, the neighbourhood and the city's future." President of Grey Power Nelson, Neville Male, says the meetings are a great way for people to get to know what the candidates are all about. "Most ratepayers do not have a good knowledge of how well sitting councillors have performed and for new candidates it is equally perplexing. Hopefully coming along to one of these evening will help."

Boy recovering after he was hit by bus A 7 year old boy is said to be recovering well after he was hit by a school bus last week. Police are investigating the incident at Atawhai Crescent and Sergeant Blair Hall said it appears the boy “shot out” in front of the bus, picking up students for Garin College.
Clifton Terrace School principal Rob Wemyss says he has visited the boy and he hopes to have him back at school soon. It is the second time a young student has been run over at the intersection in the past three years. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the council needs to act quickly to make sure
it doesn’t happen again by installing a pedestrian crossing so children can cross the road safely. “This is the second accident I’m aware of in recent times at this location and it’s important we ensure something like this or the previous incident does not occur again. It was very fortunate the incident
was not more serious and we need to act quickly now”. Rob says he fully supports moves to put in a new crossing. “It’s important that we improve the safety of all our students as they travel to and from school and we welcome this initiative for a pedestrian crossing.”
A cuppa for a memorable cause Having a cuppa could help a worthy cause this week, with local cafes lending a hand to support Alzheimers Society Nelson. Cafes across the region will be donating 50 cents for every tea or coffee they sell in order to support the cause and lend a hand to the not for proft organisation. The event will coincide with World Alzheimers Awareness Day which is this Saturday and has been organised by the society as part of their annual awareness month. Alzheimers Society Nelson field worker and team manager, Heather Lackner, says the fundraiser has been organised to bring dementia into a public arena. A similar event held by supporters of the society last Wednesdsay was a huge success and she says it was a “great start” to their annual appeal. You can support Cuppa for a Cause by heading along to the Boathouse Cafe or Vanilla Cafe this Friday, or by visiting Cafe Affair, WOW Café or Crusoe’s on Saturday. All funds raised through ‘Cuppa for a Cause’ will be used locally to help the group provide support to those affected by dementia.

Family expo a hit
with Sinead Ogilvie
Tuesday, September 3 The Nelson Cancer Society are extremely happy at the generous donations they received for Daffodil Day this year. More than 200 collectors were out in force supporting the cause and society manager Linda Lucre says donations were more than on par with previous years. The official count is yet to be announced but she says this year they targeted industrial areas so people who normally don’t get a chance to donate had the opportunity to do so. As a result $900 was collected from just one Stoke based street on the day. Tuesday, August 20 While 14th birthday celebrations for Tahunanui business Hair Craft were ruined by a break in and the theft of scissors, hair straighteners and products totalling $4000, owner Dianne MacMorland has been blown away by the support shown to her by her loyal clients after appearing in the Nelson Weekly. Some brought in chocolates, wine, cards and for a laugh, a pair of gardening shears and sewing scissors.
More than 1000 locals flocked to the Parent and Child Expo on Saturday for a chance to explore local products and talk to local experts in babies and children. This is the third annual Parent and Child Expo that has been held in Nelson, and the event has grown out of previous venues prompting this year’s to be held at the Trafalgar Centre for the first time. Organiser Prue Fothergill says she was pleased to fill the venue with huge crowds of expo goers who came through the doors steadily during the day. Feedback from the some of the 60 exhibitors she has spoken to has been extremely positive, with all impressed with the organisation and turnout.

Tuesday, August 13 The pig that was running amok in Richmond’s CBD has proven to be an elusive sow, who has no intention of giving up the wild life. John Bergman, animal control officer for the Tasman District Council told Nelson Weekly the sow lasted a few weeks in a stock pen at the pound, being fed bread, carrots and other vegetables before escaping into the bushes at Rabbit Island, where she hasn’t been spotted since.

Maths lesson turns into money maker

comparing apples with apples
Room 15 pupils of Hampden St School used their maths skills to help raise almost $400 for charity. The project started when teacher Petra Carruthers was showing her students how to use repeated addition to work out multiplication problems. To help make her point, Petra used marshmallow kebabs and while keeping them inspired, she says it led the students down a different path. “It kept them really motivated on the topic and when we made the kebabs they started talking about how they could make a whole bunch of them.” That started a debate about fundraising and after voting on which charity to raise money for, the stu-
dents took pre orders from other classes and last Tuesday set up a production in their class room. The students raised $383 from the kebab making and a representative of the Make a Wish Foundation will be presented with a cheque for that amount at the school’s assembly this Friday. Petra says she was really happy with how the project turned out but is unsure if she’ll do it again. “Maybe something similar, it was really just taking that teachable moment and going with it. The children were excited about it though and felt good that they were doing something for other people as well as learning the maths.”

Is your pool fence safe? Is there a swimming pool or spa pool where you live? Do you know your obligations under the Fencing of Swimming Pools legislation? This legislation is in place to protect children from drowning. Sadly it seems in Nelson that a large number of pools do not comply with the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987, raising huge safety concerns. However, there are many issues that would be very quick and easy to fix in order to meet the requirements. Here are the main problems that have been discovered and how to fix them. 1. Gates that don’t self close and latch from 150 mm - Most pool gates have springs or spring loaded hinges but they’re not working properly. Just increase the tension on the spring, add some lubricant and it should self close and latch again. 2. Fences with gaps greater than 100 mm Adding a paling, a covering to a fence (such as shade cloth) or some landscaping rocks may be all that is needed to get rid of those gaps. 3. Trees and shrubs planted close to the pool barrier - If pruning is neglected the branches can become strong enough to climb on. You can’t have climbable objects closer than 1.2 metres to the outside of the pool fence so be careful where you plant and make sure you prune regularly. Other issues These include doors from the house that lead to the pool area, spa pools without fencing and
backflow prevention. 1. Doors on to pool areas must self close and latch from 150 mm – You either need to install self closing and latching devices or if that won’t work, apply for an exemption to the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 or install a compliant barrier between the house and pool. 2. Unfenced spa pools - Spa pools are bound by the same legislation as swimming pools and must have compliant fencing or have an exemption to the Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987. 3. Lack of backflow preventers - When a pool is filled by a tap with a hose attached, that tap must have a backflow preventer fitted to reduce risk of contaminating the water supply in case of a pressure drop. These are readily available from hardware, plumbing and some pool supply stores. Take responsibility Not taking swimming pool fencing seriously can have deadly consequences. Everyone with a pool should know their obligations. You can get the information you need on the Council website, www.nelsoncitycouncil.co.nz and search on swimming pool consents. Or call into the Council office in Trafalgar Street, collect a brochure, then take a walk around your pool area and see what needs attention. If you need help, please call the Pool Compliance Officer on 546 0200. Business Update. Adv.

Boot camp back for breast cancer
It’s time to “get pink” for breast cancer awareness month. Registrations for this year’s Boot Camp for Breast Cancer, an annual fundraiser organised by the Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust, has now opened. The trust has already confirmed corporate sponsorship for the event to the value of $7000 thanks to local businesses, and expects to raise further funds through registration fees ($15 per person) and personal sponsorship from participants. Trustee Kim Miccio says the goal is to have 250 people take part in the event, which would raise $3750 in registration fees. “We’re encouraging people to register for the event and then raise as much as they can in personal sponsorship, with a grand prize draw for all those who raise over $100.” Local trainer, Greg Witika, owner of Wairua Body Coaching
Tom Marshall with members of a team at the Boot Camp for Breast Cancer last year. Systems, runs the event on behalf of the trust. He says it’s always a great morning out and suitable for all fitness levels. “It’s definitely not a hard core boot camp, the emphasis is very much on having fun and dressing in pink.” The event, will be at Nelson College for Girls on October 19. Crafty brewers swap their beer Aroma, appearance, flavour and mouth feel. Having a beer was a serious business for local home brewers who took part in The Kung Fu of Home Brew competition held on Saturday. The contest, organised by the Nelson branch of SOBA - the Society of Beer Advocates - attracted more than 40 entries, from IPA, to pilsner, stout, all from local home brewers who were keen for a taste of criticism and competition. The peer-judged contest caters for those in the local home brewing scene that may not have the confidence to enter the bigger national competitions, but still want to compete on a casual basis says organiser Bill Fennell. "We came up with the idea to host local casual contests at different venues around Nelson. This is the fifth one we've held and it's our biggest yet." Co-organiser Peter Mayes says the competitions was held to encourage home brewers to continue on, in the face of larger breweries who mass produce "the same bland beers". "Around 20 per cent of New Zealand’s breweries are based in the top of the south, craft brewing is definitely on the rise," he says. Guy Coddington, a local Upper Moutere home brewer and hop grower says he entered the competition to spend a Saturday in the sun, sample other local beers and take on a bit of feedback, as he is still learning. "So far I've tasted one distinctively average beer and one that rocked. I think the revival in craft beer is fantastic. With a bit of luck the big breweries will soon be on their way out." The winner of the competition was Gareth Kerr and Matt Hoddy with their Red IPA.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Well it has been an interesting few weeks with the spring winds increasing as expected. The cold southerlies though have put a frosty edge to a day out on the boat. Yet still I get calls about people doing silly things. • There was the traffic stopping kayaker who kept falling out of his kayak and then began drifting along Rocks Rd. Let’s talk about what was right with this incident. The first time I saw him fall out I thought he was simply training, the second, third and fourth time however his re-entry into the kayak or surf ski became slower and less coordinated. It was then I realised this guy was out in conditions that he shouldn’t have been. • Nothing right so far. The paddler then, recognising he was getting tired, cold and possibly hypothermic decided to stay with his kayak as he could see he was drifting from near the inner beacon towards the Boat Shed restaurant. A good decision. This guy had obviously dressed for the cold as he appeared to be wearing thermals or a wet suit and a personal floatation device, right on! • When he saw he was closing in a moored boat I saw him attempt to use it as a support to get into the kayak, eventually he failed and in doing so drifted from the boat toward the shore again. Staying with the kayak (another good decision). • Many thanks to Sail Nelson that eventually rescued the kayaker and helped him ashore. come the public to join them. Even before their official creation, the church steps were a significant meeting place. The hilltop overlooking Whakatu, where the Cathedral is now based, was long known to Maori as Pikimai. Because of its natural vantage point, the hilltop was the perfect site for a sentinel pa. If security was threatened, it offered a retreat with views of Whakatu to the north, the Whakapuaka and Maungatapu trails to the east and the Waimea trail to the west. However, Maori weren’t the only ones to see the value of the hill-
The heart and soul of Nelson’s community can be found on or at the base of the iconic Cawthron steps. The landmark granite staircase has long been a meeting point for the city; its residents gathering there for commemorations, receptions, meetings and marches, for events social, formal and historic. It’s been 100 years since local philanthropist and founder of the Cawthron Institute, Thomas Cawthron, donated the church steps to the community. In doing so, he set in stone the formation of Nelson’s social history. The centennial of the church steps is an opportunity to take a look back at and celebrate the steps for their defining role in shaping Nelson and Nelsonians. An official access way didn’t exist at the time, but the hilltop became a central place of operations and it wasn’t long before it was a hive of activity with people climbing dirt paths to reach the summit. The first church service before there was ever an official cathedral was held atop the hill in February 1842 – albeit in a surveyors hut. In 1843 lives were lost over land disputes between Europeans and Maori – during a battle

And so the steps were in 1912 on the six flights of stairs, sep born. Three flights of wooden steps were built over the dirt path in 1858 and it did not take long for the day-to-day gatherings of the hilltop to be mirrored at the bottom. In 1863, Nelson marked the marriage of Edward, Prince of Wales to Princess Alexandra of Denmark with a celebration at the bottom of the steps. In 1877 the successful rescue of passengers and crew of the wreck of immigrant ship, the Queen Bee, was commemorated. The steps were now a place of mass celebration. The Church steps saw a jovial 8000 strong crowd celebrate the 50th jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887 and the city farewelled and welcomed back local troops from the Boer War in that same year. The steps were setting the scene for important local gatherings, but as the turn of the century came and went concerns were raised about the safety of them. They became dangerously slippery in wet weather, were rotting and in a general state of disrepair; but what could be done with them? How could they be fixed? Continuing calls for the steps to be replaced with permanent materials ensued and amongst the debate during 1911, Thomas Cawthron stepped in. A well known local philanthropist, Thomas offered to cover the costs involved with replacing the steps and donate them to the city. At the same time he helped fund the continuation of the stanchions and chains along Rocks Rd. His offer was gratefully accepted and Thomas set about The Cawthron steps at the base of the Cathedral making plans for the ‘Cawthron steps’. “A real good job, massive and ornamental”, this was the look Thomas had in his sights for the steps and so he selected work was carried out daily by local la strong granite as the material for the project. Nelson, William Lock, and his gift was recorded on the first landing by way of a plaque reading “These steps were presented to the city by Thomas Cawthron ESq. A.D 1913”. What makes the steps the focal point of Nelson? Although ownership was transferred to the Nelson City Council in 1922, they have always belonged to the people of Nelson, as Thomas Cawthron intended when he first made the donation. The city continues to claim them as their own through public activities, meetings, and ceremonies and since their construction a number of significant events have taken place at their base. Over the years the Church steps have seen many a special occasion. Nelson waved goodbye to troops on their way to World War I, held war effort fundraisers, welcomed back returned servicemen and even held their first Anzac Day service there. Any time a send off, official ceremony or procession was in order; the steps have been the go-to venue. Highlights have included the 1920 tour by Edward, Prince of Wales and in 1927 another royal visit from the Duke and Duchess of York - George VI and Queen Elizabeth I. A Victoria Cross was awarded to Sgt Alfred Hulme in 1942 in front of a large crowd, and VJ (Victory over Japan) Day was celebrated in 1945. Undeniably though, one of the most memorable sights the Cawthron steps have seen was the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Phillip, the Duke of Edinburough who attended a service at the cathedral before de-

• That blasted great white butterfly has upset my gardening plans. Why? Because I can’t grow nasturtiums anymore. Close to our kitchen window, we have a lovely Moorepark apricot tree. The blossom is a treat, and it is a delight to pick warm apricots for a quick snack. Under this tree I had casually thrown a packet of mixed nasturtium seeds which equally casually grew about here and there, and gave a lovely display of brilliantly coloured trumpet shaped flowers. All the colours of the rainbow and even more. Some a fascinating amber and even brown. I proudly called this my “Monet Garden”. But now that blasted great white butterfly has ruined all that, because he loves to feed off my beloved nasturtiums. • So. If you should find any G W B in your garden, please notify the Department of Conservation immediately. Free phone 0800 80 99 66 and they will be around like a shot to deal with the pesky thing. • The blasted [my word there] great white butterfly looks similar to the small variety, but is twice as big. The eggs and caterpillars can be found in clusters whereas those of the small white butterfly caterpillars are mostly found singly. The great white butterfly can fly long distances which is a worry for commercial and home grown veg-

etable crops. The caterpillars feed lustily on host plants like your lovely cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, swedes, brussel sprouts and turnips, and will rapidly reduce the plant to a skeleton, before moving on to the next, and the next, and the next, and so on. Do you get the message? • Now let’s talk about something much nicer. I was delighted to see a lovely monarch butterfly today. It swooped and dipped about in all its delightful elegance. Monarch butterflies should be cherished in my opinion. So if you are fortunate to be host to any in your garden, be sure to have a good supply of swan plants in your garden for their survival. Monarch butterflies have a special place in my heart. At a time when I was waiting to have a very serious operation, I used to spend a lot of time quietly sitting in my garden. The butterflies would visit each day always with a close approach, but never touching me. They seemed to bring a special message. “Don’t worry, it will be alright.” So I didn’t, and it was. • Do get the potatoes in as soon as you can. It’s getting a bit late. Not so, for tender veges like tomatoes, pumpkins, beans. Planting now, is no better for the early idea. The same veges will catch up and even pass the earlier planted plants. Hasten slowly is the order of the day at present.

Charities benefit from rebrand
Over a dozen local charities and community groups have benefited from Nelson accounting, audit and business advisory firm Crowe Horwath changing its name. The firm, which until recently was called WHK, asked for applications for their surplus WHK branded jandals, torches, shirts and bags in a story that appeared in Nelson Weekly. Crowe Horwath managing principal, Darren Mark, says they were happy to be able to allocate the hundreds of items to worthy recipients including Refugee Services Nelson, Aotearoa New Zealand, the Maori wardens as well as many scout, guide and sporting groups. Over a hundred pairs of jandals were given to Refugee Services. "We hope these items will be useful for a charity and while it’s only a small gesture, we’d like to feel that it might be helpful to people in our own community.”

Redwood Valley couple Craig and Sue Davies are now co-owners of Waimea Weekly. The Davies join Richmond’s Steve Page and Jenny Bates as owners of the Weekly, maintaining its 100 per cent locally owned status. Waimea Weekly is sister paper to the Nelson Weekly, which is also 100 per cent locally owned. Sue has worked at the Weekly for five years before a six month break earlier this year but is back after buying into the business. Craig is a professional fireman, based at the Nelson Fire Station and they have three children, the youngest at Waimea College. Sue says it was an exciting opportunity to be involved in a well-known and successful local busi-
ness. “I’ve worked for the Weekly for years and am very passionate about it. I love working with local business owners and community groups and I’m really excited to be back.” She says the opportunity to buy part of the business was too great for her and Craig. “It was a really great opportunity and we look forward to helping Waimea Weekly grow even further.” Waimea Weekly publisher Steve Page says it’s great to have Sue back on board to help the business continue its growth. “We are getting great feedback from advertisers and readers and are taking on more and more staff so we are really looking forward to the future.”

The devastation at Anatoki Salmon Farm following a flash flood in June.
Congratulations with the re-opening of Anatoki. We wish you a busy season! Ruud & Dorien and the Team at Staete Landt Proud makers of your favourite wine with Anatoki Salmon!

On June 16 of this year Anatoki Salmon Farm was forced to close due to devastating flooding and a large landslide. A flash flood filled the salmon lake and the breeding ponds with mud and debris, water levels rose causing the lake and ponds to overflow and more than 35,000 fish died or escaped into the river. It was a nightmare experience for owners Jan and Gerda, who have built their life on the farm and an enormous clean up was required. But after hard work and efforts from generous volunteers, they are back in business and celebrating their reopening - plus some exciting new features. “Like the phoenix rises from the ashes, we rose
from the mud and have become even better. The public will notice improvements around our pristine site, which include a new shelter, new seats, a new house style, signage, website and much, much more.” It was incredibly important to Jan and Gerda to get Anatoki Salmon Farm back open for business despite the huge cleanup ahead of them. Besides Christmas Day, they never take a day off. The successful tourist attraction is open 364 days a year and caters to 25,000 visitors annually– so they were committed to returning it to its former glory. “After the landslide it seemed like it was all for

Kaiteriteri upgrade will ‘improve experience’ for visitors
Tasman’s most iconic summer destination could be set for a makeover. The Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve Board has just lodged a consent application with Tasman District Council so it can proceed with its long-term development plan – a project it hopes will result in improved experiences for visitors and residents of the seaside town. The project will see enhancements to the
commercial area, including replacing the general store, providing additional accommodation and a café courtyard; improved recreational and visitor facilities on either side of the road; extensive planting of native trees and shrubs and construction of a boardwalk around the estuary edge. Brian Gibb, who is chairman of the board, says Kaiteriteri needs better facilities that are well-linked. “Ensuring the town is at-
tractive, has good facilities and is in tune with its natural setting is also important to the commercial operators who contribute to the area’s value as a recreation destination,” he says. Interested parties, including the local community, iwi and regular visitors, have had constructive input into the planning, and the board was confident it would ensure better utilisation of the land as well
as decreasing congestion, as it is visited by 9000 people a day in the height of summer. “Kaiteriteri has a great reputation as a safe, family-friendly outdoor recreation destination in a stunning natural setting. But as a small seaside town that has grown quite rapidly to support a much larger surrounding and seasonal community, it has tended to spread along the beachfront rather than develop in a more coherent way.”

John Ellis likes a good yarn and he thinks he’s alright at telling them too, embellishments included of course. And that self-acknowledged statement is probably why the Kohatu man has just released his first ever book – Tall Tales and True from Kohatu and Beyond. The book, which it’s fair to say, is more targeted at mature minds who can handle a rude joke or ten, covers bizarre and hysterically funny scenarios John has found himself in. Most of which have occurred since moving from Australia to outside Tapawera. “It’s full of sex, drugs and rock and roll, plus a lot of violent but only in a very cheeky way. There’s even a bit of reverse bestiality but it’s all good fun,” he explains of the book, cackling a laugh in his Australian accent. “It’s a collection of stories from my childhood, early working life and latter working life.” John has been engaged in river works
on the radio, it’s experiences I’ve had and with a bit of embellishment, they’re quite funny.” The humorous scenarios and experiences are not in any particular order, and include tales such as the possum in the women’s toilets, which ended up not being a possum at all, only something just as hairy; and the awkward moment when the site foreman left work and never returned, so a large group of forestry workers had to squeeze onto the same tractor together. “There’s another when there was a fight here at the pub and it’s still hilarious, particularly when the two protagonists removed their false teeth and mixed them up at the end of the fight.” But without releasing any more spoilers, John says the book is a guaranteed laugh, and he even admits there was one experience that was just too rude to publish – it may have included walking in on “a lonely farmer” naked in a shed of cows. Tall Tales and True from Kohatu and Beyond will soon be available from Page & Blackmore in Nelson. John has planned to pen a second book before Christmas.

Dun run just a month away The Subway Dun Run has been on the Nelson running scene since 1995 and has always received solid support from the local fitness fraternity. The nineteenth edition, on October 12, will be no exception with numbers already nearing 100, boosted by support from those aspiring to attain medals in the South Island Masters Games. What started as a rugged demanding uphill section from the Maitai Dam to the Dun Mountain Saddle has now had most of the “mongrel” taken out.
Gone are the technical riverbeds as they are not conductive to the “fat tyre tribe” mountainbikers who now frequent what was once a tramper’s domain. But that has had its upside as trailrunners and walkers now have sure footing as they ascend, plus legs are left less tired to enjoy the stretch down the nation’s first railway line to finish at The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. Total distance of the race is 22km and registration qualification is completing a half marathon equivalent in 2.45 hours which enables and encourages

walkers to have a go. Entries close October 5. A year before the Dun Run began it was the Abel Tasman Coastal Classic’s turn and this iconic event celebrates its 20th anniversary on September 28. The 350-plus field has been sold out for months and competitors are in for a special repeat journey of the original route from two decades ago. But it will be in reverse from the 1994 original as to the start point will be from Totaranui, ending 40kms later or thereabouts at Marahau. Full details on both events at nelsonevents.co.nz.

FC Nelson add more silverware to trophy cabinet
FC Nelson defender Sam Miller puts a pass through during his side's Price Charity Cup final win over Richmond on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Winning the Price Charity Cup turned a good season into a great season, and with two trophies in the bag, FC Nelson Sprig & Fern coach Robbie Hansen wants his side to push for Mainland Premier League promotion in 12 months time. Having beaten Richmond Athletic 3-1 in the Price Charity Cup – which is a knockout tournament for division one teams only – FC Nelson Sprig & Fern made up for a disappointing Top of the South campaign and Robbie firmly believes the Mainland Premier League should be the next goal for the side, which also won the league. “If we have the right people involved on and off the pitch then I think that should be the next step. There’s not much more we can do in the first division so that’s what we should be aiming for,” says Robbie. “It’s going to be hard to top this season but everything is going well for pushing for Mainland League [promotion]. Hopefully we can hold onto the next guys coming through to fill those gaps of the guys who

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz might retire or move down to the lower divisions.” In order to gain promotion into the 2015 Mainland Premier League season, FC Nelson would need to indicate its desire to Mainland Football before next season – then of course win the division one and beat the winner of Christchurch’s second tier competition in the playoff promotion. Four FC Nelson players from last year – Sean Parkes, Johnathan Gough, Davi Maciel and Neil Connell – shifted clubs to Nelson Suburbs in order to play in the Mainland Premier League this season. The quartet played integral parts in the second placing, behind New Zealand’s top club Cashmere Technical, but Robbie believes they might have stayed had FC Nelson also been in that league.

Ellie stabilised the college team, both on attack and defence with great timing. She played with maturity, pulling in a number of well-timed intercepts and put in precision, stress free feeds to her shooters Abbey Franklin and Danielle Kerwan. Nelson held a 10-7 lead at the first break and doubled it to see the score board read 20-14 at the major break. Wanderers lifted the bar in the third period with goal defence Jordan Webby gaining valuable ball, while Kayla Cross increased her load at goal attack, along with Kayla Fry at goal shoot outscored Nelson 10-8. With only ten minutes to play the defending champions knew they only had to score off their own to see their name on the trophy once again. Although there was considerable ball turned over, the college girls kept their heads to take the game 34-28. Alice Hazlett could be well pleased with her effort at

The curtain came down on the 2013 season for Nelson Netball at Saxton Courts on Saturday. The season was a challenging one considering that fact that Saxton Stadium was out of action on account of the April 21 floods. Local netballers had the use of the stadium for the pre-season Geraldine Hodgson Tournament and were forced outside for the season proper. At times the elements proved testing with a number of wet days, however playing outside helped prepare the local college teams for their South Island Secondary Schools Tournament which was played outdoors at Hagley Courts in Christchurch at the beginning of the month. Nelson College for Girls A finished 13th at SISS and knew they were to go into their semi-final without key players Rosa Edwards and Nicole Drummond who had been selected in the New Zealand Touch Team. To their credit the girls stepped up to the task and had the belief in one another to defeat Jacks Drainmax in the semi to book their berth in the final. Taylors Wanderers A won the other spot in the final by defeating Rival Cougars. Wanderers centre Pip Lee looked to stamp her authori-
boxing: Nelson’s Natalie Stuart has had her first two fights in Germany, losing both on decision. Natalie, who featured in Nelson Weekly last month, is in Europe as part of the New Zealand team and fought German champion Carlotta Hansen in her first fight, losing on majority decision. Her second fight, against the same opponent, was lost on split decision. Her coach Alan Dickey says she was unlucky not to get the decision against the 140 fight veteran. Natalie, who has now had 15 fights, is in Poland for an international tournament before returning to New Zealand for nationals.
