Retailers set for Xmas rush Sinead Ogilvie Retailers are preparing for the onslaught of last minute shoppers as they head towards the busiest week of the year. Paymark figures released on Friday show $20.5 million was spent in Nelson last week and this figure looks set to snowball as people begin their last minute Christmas spending. Ailsa Cowan, owner of Crackerjack Toys says the busiest time of year has well and truly begun for her store and she expects sales to increase steadily over the week ahead. “It’s a good time of year for us. We are expecting some extremely busy periods this week as it has been mayhem over the last few days.” Fashion Island manager Susan Matz says Christmas celebrations have rubbed off on customers with stores tracking well and up on last year’s fig-
ures, something which she expects will continue on through Christmas. “The stores are doing really well, we are now starting our Christmas countdown. It’s definitely our busiest time of year.” Local retailers have seen a huge spike in the number of voucher sales and Susan says vouchers are a top seller and “incredibly popular” at this time of year. Dave Waine, owner of Urban Beach says his store is expecting great numbers through the doors this week and has noticed customers are supporting New Zealand designers when purchasing. Jewel Beetle owner Yvon Smits says she is already seeing more sales than last year and this week will be the busiest time of year for her jewellery store.

Thousands of dollars, hours and light bulbs have gone into brightening up this year’s Harcourts Light Up Nelson competition with a total of 17 houses participating. Nelson Weekly spoke with four homeowners that have entered
again this year, in the lead up to the Christmas period, which is of course their busiest time. Graham and Keitha Holdaway won the competition four years ago when they first decked out their Panorama Drive home with thousands of Christmas lights. Graham took a break when he

FROM PAGE 1 has always been an integral part. “For me it makes the lights come alive,” says Graham. While they are hopeful that their home would win again this year, Keitha says they just enter for the enjoyment. Arlene Armstrong is back in the competition following the death of her husband. The two started lighting up their Kauri St home in Stoke in 2001. She decided not to enter without him. Having won in 2009, her husband passed away just before Christmas in 2010. “I didn’t feel like doing it that year and I still didn’t feel like doing it the next year,” says Arlene. “But this year the kids said why don’t we do it, the lights are all there.” She says it has been an emotional time being back in the competition but “was glad to see people appreciate it”. Chris Hollis has only entered his ArborLea Ave home for two years and worked on

Their home won best new entrant last year and its main feature includes a merry-go-round that the children can ride on. Chris “doesn’t like setting fire to money,” so decided to purchase Christmas lights instead of fireworks and the obsession grew from there. He, like most entrants, says the cost of running the lights is very low. For a full list of entrants visit www.lightupnelson.co.nz.
“We have been a lot busier already and I think we’ll see more people in over the last few days before Christmas.” With the arrival of Nelson’s cycle trails, local business owner Mike Anderson has seen a lift in bike sales at Stoke Cycle Centre and says Christmas time is always a busy time for him, although he feels like customers are leaving it later each year. “My feeling is people have less money so like to hold off until the last minute to do their shopping.” Mums have been doing the majority of the shopping this year says Susan but with Christmas falling on Tuesday, she is expecting to see some Dads doing their last minute shopping this weekend with the family.

24 hour gym for Nelson A new 24 hour gym will open its doors in Tahunanui next year. Snap Fitness is a US-based company, with its New Zealand gyms owned by franchisees and will operate from a new building next to the Speight’s Ale House and Mitre 10 Mega. No one from the company was able to confirm the move to Nelson Weekly but its website lists “Nelson Supa Centa” as one of its gyms, followed
by “coming soon”, while neighbouring businesses have known about the move for some time. The business was founded in the United States in 2003 and now has more than 2000 gyms worldwide with more than 20 now in New Zealand. Customers can access the Snap gym 24-hours a day with a swipe card. The site is a couple of hundred metres from the region’s biggest gym, City Fitness.

Dozens of Santa Claus-clad runners made their way from town to the beach on Sunday for the annual Jingle Bells Jog and Santa Walk. The event, held by Nelson Events, is a charity day with all of the proceeds going to the Nelson branch of the Heart Foundation. The 4.7km race was open to joggers, walkers, skaters and scooters with everyone being encouraged to wear Christmas costumes or carry a ringing bell. There were prizes for the most ringing bells, best costume, best themed family and a special award for the best dressed dog. There was plenty of tooting as drivers passed the trail of Santas around Rocks Rd with many of them observing the unique event. Organiser Averil West was “really happy” with the turnout and highlighted the fact that more people had dressed up this year.

Hot start for ice rink Tahunanui’s new ice skating rink saw hundreds of people don a pair of skates over the weekend as the Ice World New Zealand facility opened for business on Saturday. The $250,000 portable project is now open at the Tahunanui Beach domain and will remain for the summer holidays, providing people with a chance to hit the ice. Robert Ah Chee event manager for Ice World New Zealand says the idea behind bringing ice skating to town was to offer a unique experience that many Nelsonians would not have ever had the chance to try before. “It’s a great chance for people to have a go at something different. Not everyone will have tried ice skating before and now it’s right in their backyard.” Robert says he has seen people young and old out on the ice having a go and hopes to see the community making the most of the rink while it is in town. “It’s great for kids or adults who might not have experienced something like this Eden Henbrey, 13 and Wren Van Derleij, 12, of Nelson at the before or have tried it and new iceskating rink at Tahunanui. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. loved it. You’re never too old
to ice skate.” Ice World New Zealand has set up similar temporary rinks around New Zealand but this will be the first of it’s kind in Nelson. Robert says one of the reasons they chose to bring ice skating to the region is because it was “so out of the blue.” “It’s so hot in Nelson and being right alongside the beach makes it a really unique experience.” Local Mike Forrest took his daughter Ana along to try it out and says it was great to be able to ice skate in Nelson. “It’s our chance for a white Christmas isn’t it? It’s a really nice treat to be able to do something like this here. It’s not always going to be here and it’s not something you often get the chance to do,” he says. Plans to create a festival environment with food stalls alongside the rink won’t go ahead with other local businesses already providing a service in the area says Robert. The rink will stay until the end of January and is open from 9am to 10pm daily.

Sick kids get surprise gifts Your Community Newspaper
Andrew Board
Felicity Watson holds onto the Christmas card and Richmond Mall voucher given to her by an anonymous man for her sick son Decklyn at Nelson Hospital. Photo: Andrew Board.
A young man’s gift to 30 sick children at Nelson Hospital has reduced many of their mothers to tears. The anonymous man, described by staff at Nelson Hospital to be in his early 20s, sold his car and with the money it raised bought Christmas cards and $20 vouchers to the Richmond Mall. He visited the children’s ward at the hospital about three weeks ago and asked the staff on reception to give them to 30 families. Hospital receptionist Sherryl Cole says he wanted no thank you and would not even give his surname. “I think everyone’s been quite overwhelmed by it, particularly when people are in here with sick kids, to know that someone out there, a young guy, cared so much is just fantastic.” But Nelson Weekly was able to track down the man who said he just wanted to do something nice. Each card was handwritten by the man and read: “Merry Christmas, get well soon” and was signed “Shayne”. Stoke mother Felicity Watson says the gift brought her to tears. “It’s such a stressful time when you’re in hospital with a young baby, and when the nurse came in with this, I just burst into tears straight away. It’s so nice, such a nice thing for someone to do.” She says she is planning to use the voucher to buy something that her son Decklyn will be able to keep for a number of years. “When he grows up I want him to be able to look at it and know that someone cared about him when he was so young.”
Sherryl says most of the mothers had a similar reaction to Felicity. “Most were really overwhelmed, it meant a lot to the families.” The man says he came up with the idea while selling an old car on Trademe. He said that the money raised would go to charity and decided to give it to sick children after hearing about the paediatric ward from a friend who is a trainee nurse. The car was bought for $300 and he then went to see Richmond Mall manager David Hill and told him what he wanted to do. “I said I’m going to split this up into vouchers and give it to the kids and he just said he’d match me dollar for dollar.” So the $300 worth of vouchers turned into $600. Sherryl says staff at the hospital would like to say thank you to the man and let him know he made a difference this Christmas. “He’s restored our faith in humanity, especially for a guy his age. Young men get a lot of bad press but this was just great.” Felicity says the man is like a “Christmas angel”. “I want to say thank you to him, I asked the nurse if he gave an address so I could write to him but he didn’t so hopefully he’ll read this and realise how much it meant to us.” When told of the reaction from the mothers, the man says it was what he was hoping for. “That’s definitely the sort of happiness that I wanted to get out of it. It was $20 for the kids for Christmas and hopefully they’ll get some enjoyment out of it.” He says he still wants to remain anonymous. “It’s something someone has done as a random act of kindness. If people know who it is they think they sort of owe you for it,” he says.

Sprig & Fern opens in Tahuna The newest Sprig & Fern will open in Tahunanui tomorrow. Owners Ben and Holly Douglas say they’re excited about the launch after hosting a shout for trade workers on the site and friends and family over the weekend. “It’s been a lot of sleepless nights and long days working but we’ve all put in the hard work to make it successful. Everyone’s been really passionate about it and we couldn’t have done it without Tracy [Banner] and Dave [Barrett] from the brewery,” says Holly. “It’s been as much their project as ours.”
It is the sixth Sprig & Fern-styled bar to open and the fifth in Nelson, with one now set up in Wellington. Holly says the move happened fairly quickly but she’s looking forward to welcoming locals to the old Amigo’s site, across the road from the Tahuna playing fields. “We can’t wait to serve real customers now and we think they’ll like it. We had no negative feedback from our two practice nights, it looks like a Sprig & Fern, it feels like a Sprig & Fern and we’re really happy with how it’s turned out.”

Tasman Auto Electrics are over the moon with the response they got from a Christmas promotion, which saw thousands of dollars worth of presents donated to the Salvation Army. The Richmond business ran a Christmas Cracker competition where Nelson Weekly readers could cut out an entry form from the paper and take it in along with a nonperishable food item or a new toy to leave under the tree. One lucky entrant was then drawn out of a hat to win $1000 cash while each week someone won a $100 restaurant voucher.
Co-owner Dawn Rameka decided to run the competition because she wanted to support a worthy cause. “We wanted to do a promotion and wanted to combine it with the collection,” she says. Salvation Army major Jill Knight says the organisation was particularly pleased with the number of food items dropped off as their current stock had just run out. “We couldn’t do it without this amazing community and people like Tasman Auto Electrics are just making all of the difference.” The winner of the $1000 was Richmond woman Robyn Cliff.

Lantern celebration as popular as ever Around 2500 children and their families let their lanterns guide them down the Centre of New Zealand on Saturday night. The annual Lantern Celebration was held at the Botanical Reserve and saw the community make the trip up to the Centre of New Zealand, with wacky, magical installations and performances greeting them along the way. Organiser Sophie Kelly says the
celebration is a “lovely and gentle” community event that provides people with an opportunity to visit the Centre of New Zealand and enjoy a fun family event. “It’s about the community gathering together and enjoying the journey through a creative space.” During the celebration children attended a workshop to create their own lanterns using torches, milk bottles, glue and coloured vinyl.

Kmart coming City’s CEO gets to work to Richmond
Kmart has all but confirmed it is coming to Richmond in a move that is sure to bring more shoppers into the town. The move will make it the first major business to sign onto the Gibbon’s Construction development project at the former Placemakers site on Queen St. A spokesperson from the Australian retail giant said “Kmart is close to finalising an agreement with a developer regarding the site at 184 – 186 Queen Street, Richmond. Kmart would like to bring its great everyday low prices closer to the Nelson and Tasman communities.” Gibbons refused to comment on the statement and both parties say further details were likely to be announced in the coming weeks. Richmond Unlimited chairman David Hill says any new development, especially at its proposed site, is going to be good for Richmond. “One of the keys to Richmond’s success is its concentration of businesses within the central business district.”
Nelson City Council's new chief exeuctive started her first day on job yesterday. Clare Hadley was appointed in early November and comes to Nelson from Rangitikei District Council in Marton, near Palmerston North. She wasn't avalible for media interviews on Monday but earlier stated her keenness to get started and make Nelson her
home. “I feel privileged to be able to serve the residents of Nelson and to work alongside a council that has great vision for the city’s future. “There is clear alignment Clare between the vision to make Hadley. Nelson a better place and the achievements the council has made
in recent years. Plans for the city’s future are also well in line with continuing to see Nelson grow and thrive. It’s clear Nelson knows where it wants to go and its leaders are working hard to get it there. Clare prevailed over a field of 56 applicants with a wide range of experience who hailed from both national and international locations.
Checking out Christmas in style Marianne Hart Biggs is used to driving excited people around Nelson, but it's usually on their wedding day not to see some Christmas lights. This year Marianne is offering to take groups of up to six on a tour of the houses taking part in this year's Harcourts Light Up Nelson Christmas light competition. She decided to do the idea to help raise some money for the Nelson Hospice after a man enquired about hiring the old London taxi to take his kids on the Light Up Nelson tour. Marianne says she can take groups of up to six and will donate half of the $200 fee to the hospice. For more information call her on 021 110 4078. Photo: Andrew Board.

Riverside jumps in to help women’s refuge A push by the women’s refuge to make Christmas a bit better for dozens of Nelson families has been met with enthusiasm from a number of local businesses, including Riverside Pool. Each year the refuge sends out around 40 letters to businesses to see if they can help provide food or gifts for their hampers which are delivered to around 60 families who have been clients of the refuge over the past year. Refuge manager Trudie Brand says they usually get a good response from churches and businesses with some like CrackerJack Toys making special parcels each year and supermarkets and butchers donating food. Riverside says when it got a letter from the refuge it decided to go all out and attempt to really get in behind the cause.
“We thought we’d do the tree as well so people could see what it’s actually about and it’s a great opportunity to get behind them,” says Lisa Bergman. Regular swimmers to the pool and parents of children in the swim school have been donating presents to go under the Christmas tree and the children have been writing Christmas wishes to help decorate the tree. Swim Magic swim school has also donated a ‘gift of life’, or a school term’s worth of swimming lessons. Centre manager Dave McKenzie says anyone is welcome to come and donate a non-perishable food item or gift to put under the tree. “It would be great to get a really good response from the people of Nelson for this. Hopefully it will help make Christmas special for some families.”

show off their skills and what they’ve learnt over the year. “They love the chance to perform so any chance to get on the stage they enjoy and being at the Theatre Royal will make it even more special.” Tickets for the concert are almost sold out but some may be on sale at the ticket office of the Theatre Royal. All of the students received merit or distinction as part of their studies via Trinity College in London.

Q: My children have been sick often this last winter and I have built up quite a debt at our doctors. I have been told that I need to pay the bill if we want to see the doctor again. Can a doctor refuse to see us if we are sick? A: If there is an arrangement in place to pay arrears, the doctor should not refuse to see you and your family. Your doctor and medical practice provide a service that you pay for. When you enroll with a medical practice, you sign a contract and agree to certain conditions of payment: to pay after a visit with the doctor or nurse and to keep any debt below a certain level. If you have not been able to pay, it is expected that you will talk to the practice manager about paying the debt off regularly. They will provide you with an automatic payment form and encourage you to keep up with payments, so you end up in credit. As in any situation when you break a payment contract, communication is the key! We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Cycle trail earns praise: This week, like many other cyclists, I took full advantage of the now open bridge over the Waimea River on the Great Taste Cycle Trail. Congratulations and thanks must go to TDC, with government assistance, for getting this segment of the cycle trail completed before Christmas. for Christmas this year. Seems to be getting smaller and smaller. :( Salisbury School to stay open: Huge news!!!!! Full credit to Salisbury school board and supporter’s bloody ripper. Gary Brown. Congratulations to all the staff and BOT at Salisbury school. You have all worked so hard and have been now rewarded for doing so. The minister should resign from her position as clearly she has no understanding of the needs of these children. What a wonderful Christmas treat for you all! Glenda Lovell. The only logical decision. Thank goodness for the young women who this facility helps. Dave Trigg. It is good news, but I suspect that it will only be kept open as long as it takes for a new law to be put in place to cover its permanent closure. But here's hoping for a flip-flop of the Ministry's earlier decision and that the school can remain as an educational/residential school and that enrolments will continue to happen. Congratulations to the BOT for taking this matter to court and succeeding. Carol Stewart.
I know that school has helped so many young women so that is awesome. Tony Garry. I'd suggest that this particular minister has lurched from cockup to cock-up. A resignation would be in order? Nigel Thompson. Skater mum gets a new skateboard: Awesome Sharee!!! You so deserve this!!! And you look so stoked ...cute:) Lauren Bermingham. Guy thanks Nelson audience: Thank you very much to everyone in Nelson who came! (I think everyone in Nelson actually came)(It was quite a racist audience). Guy Williams. Naked swimmer not easy on eye: I want to get this guy next door who keeps swimming naked in his swimming pool to stop! I mean it's ugly and he keeps flexing his puku as well. He thinks we can't see but we can I tells ya! Thanks for all the great feedback, keep it coming. Editor.

Butterflies a ‘major threat’ to Nelson
Nelsonians are being called on to help rid the city of a butterfly that, according to the department of conservation, poses major threats to the region’s economy and environment. A multi-agency attempt is being made to eradicate the great white butterfly in Nelson city in a bid to clear New Zealand of the introduced pest. The caterpillars can be readily identified by feeding in groups on plants they favour, including brassica vegetables, particularly cabbages and broccoli, and nasturtiums and honesty. The caterpillars are speckled black and greyish-green with three yellow lines along their bodies. The great white butterfly was discovered in a Nelson garden in 2010 and so far is only known to be in the city. Great white butterfly caterIt is a threat to pillars are found in groups New Zealand on plants they like. commercial and home brassica vegetable crops and to native cresses, including some at risk of extinction. The Department of Conservation is leading the eradication attempt in conjunction with Vegetables New Zealand, the Ministry for Primary Industries, Tasman District Council, and Nelson City Council. DOC Motueka Area Manager Martin Rodd says the department had decided to attempt to eradicate the great white butterfly, with the other agencies’ support, because it could have serious consequences for the survival of many native cress species. The help of Nelson Tasman residents is being called on as it will be vital to achieving eradication. Householders are being asked to search their gardens for the pest butterfly’s caterpillars and report sightings to the Ministry of Primary Industries hotline 0800 80 99 66.

Gr wing Things
With Robyn Hollis
By the time you read this column the last stages of panic will have set in. Have I bought enough ham? Did anyone order the turkey? Have you seen the decorations? You invited how many from work to join us because they were going to be on their own… Of course this does not happen in real life – just thought I would stir you up a little. In our little family things seem to be going along almost too smoothly, I keep waiting for something or someone to come out of the woodwork and really turn things upside down! I guess this Christmas will be mainly centred around a certain, just over one year old, little person, as it will be his first. The tree this year, is up at a much higher level than normal – hopefully it will stay put and yes, the lights are attached so little fingers cannot pull them off! All decorations are placed well out of reach but there will be plenty of wrapped things down at Benjamin level for him to tear into on the day. We will have four generations at our Christmas table which in itself, is very special, and we are all looking forward to some fun family time. We will also be thinking of our family in Ukraine and will Skype them on Christmas day. If you are stuck for some gift ideas you still have time to pop to the garden centre and buy a pot or two to fill with basil, chives etc. These make a great gift – things do not have to cost the earth – a pot with one geranium or a large grade petunia will bloom and look good for many weeks – a bit of colourful gift wrap and you’re done. Another idea is a pot stuffed with gloves, seeds, plant food and gardeners soap or hand lotion etc. Homemade shortbread always goes down a treat or jars of sea salt flavoured with rosemary, lemon zest, dill etc and tied with a pretty ribbon make a lovely gift. Homemade pestos are always good gifts and I have a recipe here for broad bean pesto which I found in an old gardening magazine and thought I would share

• If you are going away and don’t have a neighbour who can water for you – invest in a timer so you do not come back to a sad and sorry garden. • Pots and tubs that can be moved should go into a shady part of the garden to conserve moisture – or again, a good neighbour always helps. • Keep picking flowers and harvesting veges for a continuous supply – keep sowing lettuce, beans, carrots, eggplants, corn, cucumbers, zucchini etc and

mulch the vege garden with pea straw or compost to keep in the moisture. • Try to keep water off the leaves of the tomatoes-just water from the base if possible. • Keep picking and using your herbs so the fresh leaves keep coming as they have the best flavour.
Q& A Q: I had a query from Julie who wants to know when is the best time to re-pot and divide her Cymbidium orchids. A: Cymbidium orchids are the toughest of the orchid family but still need some regular maintenance to keep them flowering and looking their best. They should be divided and re-potted every 2-4 years as soon as they have finished flowering. Cymbidiums get very full and tight in their pots so that they are literally bursting out! ‘Tis the season to be jolly…stay safe, be happy and have a wonderful Christmas. Best Regards to you all,
Robyn

Despair for Stoke/ Nayland
Stoke/Nayland bowler Dylan Eginton throws his hands in despair as an edge falls just wide of close in fielder Ben Homan during the weekend's two day cricket final at Saxton Field. Photo: Phillip Rollo. Phillip Rollo They say big players step up in big games and no one stood higher than Greg Hay, as the Waimea Toi Toi United batsman hit an unbeaten 138 runs to gift the Tigers their second twoday title in as many years. Car Company Stoke/Nayland had two heroes of their own with seamers Marty King and Darius Skeaping claiming all nine wickets between them as they shouldered most of the bowling work. At tea on the second day, the match was all but resigned to just one innings each. But Greg, who now claims the Vonda Edwards Trophy for the competition’s most prolific batsman, was unstoppable as last year’s champions held on for a famous victory, surpassing Stoke/Nayland’s 245 in the 89th over with just one wicket to spare. Stoke/Nayland captain Ryan Edwards says his side was “abso-
lutely gutted” to lose the match before acknowledging Greg’s innings on the second day. “He was just superb that’s the best innings I think I’ve seen,” he says. Ryan believed his side’s 245 all out was “about par”, as he top scored with 47. Marty reached 42 runs while Dylan Eginton and Ben Homan also made key contributions with the bat. With Harrington’s Beer Café WTTU down six wickets at lunch on Sunday, Stoke/Nayland remained firmly in the hunt. “The way that Marty and Darius bowled was just superb and although Greg Hay gets a lot of the accolades if we had won the game then their efforts would have been just as large as his.” Both sides now take a break over Christmas before the twenty20 season begins on January 5. Ryan is hoping that Stoke/ Nayland can go one better than last year when they were beaten by ACOB in the final.

The Harbour Master’s
diary
• Four container vessels, a log ship departed, the cement ship, a tanker with the Christmas supply of fuel, and seventeen large fishing vessel movements occurred around the port • It is very rewarding to hear from the patrol boat that after eight hours of patrolling there were no issues of note. Congratulations to you all and many thanks from us for your responsible behaviour. • We did hear from one source how a fisherman in a small dinghy narrowly averted being run down by a larger launch because he was very poorly lit and in the mainstream of the harbour as everyone went out to fish. Given the resources available today it is only someone with an inbuilt desire to go for a forced swim with a major headache that would go to sea without a bright light to let others know where he is. Think about all the fish lost. • We have also heard that there have been jelly fish about. The recommendation is to wear a full length rash suit, especially your young ones as they can have a nasty sting. If stung get off to the doctor or emergency department to get appropriate antibiotics or antihistamines and some good advice as to comfort and recovery. • There were many events on the water on the weekend and it was great to see them all managed well and safely. • Don’t forget the new by-laws are in place and ignorance of the law is no excuse. You can find them and the current conditions in the harbour by referring to Port Nelson web site and looking under the Shipping Info tab. Have a great summer and stay safe,
Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Fresh bid for national league
Nelson has entered a fresh bid for a full national league team days after its youth league team played together for the first time. The group behind the Nelson Falcons youth team, which won two of its preseason games over the weekend, entered the bid with New Zealand Football on Monday. It is hoped that the team will be able to play in next season’s competition. Committee member Aldo Miccio says it’s important to have a “flagship” senior team in the national competition. “New Zealand Football invited us to resubmit our bid for next year so we’ve sent that away and we’re confident, all things
going well, that next year we’ll have a senior men’s team in the ASB premiership. It’s important to have that team that youth can aspire to and be inspired by.” He says the Falcons proved over the weekend that the region has the talent and with the governance and structure set up for the youth league team, he is confident Nelson will foot it with the best in the country next season. Meanwhile on the field, coach Davor Tavich believes the Nelson Falcons have got what it takes to play at ASB Youth League level after a reasonably successful spell of pre-season matches over the weekend.
Despite picking up an injury to goal keeper Coey Turipa during Friday’s 2-0 win over Team Wellington, the Falcons fought bravely losing 1-2 against YoungHeart Manawatu and 2-3 against Hawke’s Bay United in a small Aldo Miccio. pre-season tournament. Captain Mark Johnston and Waimea College’s Dion Keetley were forced to share the keeping duties in Coey’s absence before the former New Zealand Under 20 rep returned for the follow-
ing day’s action. Nelson lost again to Hawke’s Bay on the Sunday, going down 1-2 before ending the trip on a high with a 2-1 win over Manawatu. Blenheim’s Tore Waaetcher scored his third of the weekend while Furkan Kokcu, back from the Ole Academy in Wellington, took his first goal in a Falcons jersey. The squad will be without Ross McPhie and Cory Brown who have been called into the New Zealand Under-17’s 30-man squad that will also compete in the ASB Youth League. The Falcons’ first game in the competition is at Trafalgar Park against Canterbury United on January 13.
Nelson drivers take series lead Ian Burson and Shane Carey remain well in the hunt despite Christchurch’s Mark Osborne running away with victory in Saturday’s ELF Super Cup 25lap feature race. What seems like a travelling circus, showcasing the South Island’s quickest super saloons, the ELF Super Cup started brightly in Blenheim the two of Nelson’s top drivers with Ian and Shane sitting pretty perched at the top of the standings. The two drivers have now swapped spots on the overall

standings and will head into the third round with a small points advantage of a number of out of town drivers, including Mark, who collected an impressive 265 points on Saturday. Despite finishing second in the feature race in Nelson, Ian was the third highest point taker on Saturday with 222. Drivers accumulate points depending on their overall position and for how many cars they overtake. National Championships this season and Nelson competitors have been working hard to ensure they will not just represent the club with pride but also have a more than great chance of success. Whether you are one of the many competitors preparing to travel off to compete at the National Championships or one of the thousands of supporters looking forward to the racing at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway, this summer is shaping up to be one of the best. The summer programme begins with the Xmas Extravaganza meeting on Saturday 29 December and features the Superstock and Sidecar Club Championships and round two of the Three Quarter Midget Club Champs. Also scheduled to race are the Youth Ministocks, Midgets and Streetstocks. As a late Christmas prezzy the club is giving away a brand new bike to one lucky child in the crowd. There will also be secret Santa gifts and the chance to win a free pass to the qualifying at the New Zealand Home
Loans NZ Superstock Champs. This will be the last chance for our Superstocks to have a home track run prior to their National title on January 11 and 12 and you can be sure that with the Club Championship on the line as well the pace will be super quick and super exciting. Superstocks are the heavyweights of Speedway, they are purpose built for both speed and full contact. The New Zealand Superstock Championship is the premier event on the NZ Speedway calander and Nelson has an unequalled reputation for hosting top quality championship events so this is truly a not to be missed event. The support we have received from New Zealand Home Loans has made it possible for us to offer great prize money which has helped to entice a number of former New Zealand, Grand Prix, North and South Island Championship place getters on to the entry list. Anyone watching Superstock racing for the first time is left open mouthed at the hard hitting full on racing these guys dish up week to
