Brothers memory runs on With the memory of his recently deceased brother running through his head and his feet planted in the shoes his sibling was to wear at these South Island Masters Games, Brett Thornalley was a man possessed with grief, pride and determination. This wasn’t enough to win him the race, or even lift him from the back of the field. But when Brett finished the 800 metre race that his older brother Carl entered earlier this year, he was a happy man. “It was just about him today and we’re just proud to do it for him,” says Brett. As Carl Thornalley passed away just months short of competing in the South Island Master’s Games, Brett took it upon himself to run in his honour and alongside his 70 year-old father Brian. Brett picked up a bronze medal in the 30-44 year-old 800m and Brian claimed a national record for his 9.38 second time in the 60m sprint, and speaking to them at Saxton Oval on Saturday, the pair say it was a proud moment to compete in Carl’s honour. Carl was a fine athlete, says Brian, and was training for the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m at the Masters Games. Carl was going to run alongside his father, who was targeting the 60m 70-75 year old record. But when Carl passed away in June, aged just 41 years old, Brian says he couldn’t race anymore. “I just lost all interest in doing anything, but Brett said well we’ve gotta do it for Carl because that’s what he wanted,” he says. The day Carl’s brand new Adidas running shoes arrived from the United

Brothers memory runs on at Games FROM PAGE 1 States he was excited, looking forward to trying them out. Tragically, it was only hours later than Carl received news that he had terminal cancer. “The shoes never came out of the box, and he was dead three months later,” says Brett. But Carl was adamant that he was going to compete and was training for the six weeks up until he passed away. “He was getting slowly weaker and in the last few weeks it just tortured him. It was just so rapid,” says Brian. Carl left behind a wife and a three year-old child. Brian and Brett both wore yellow wristbands from Carl’s funeral in the race.

Running in Carl’s shoes, Brett took an early lead in the 800m, before slowly falling behind. But he says the results were secondary on the day, despite picking up a bronze medal for his efforts. “It was good. It was hard and it was a battle all the way, but I always had someone I was trying to catch. It was purely running for my brother and that was it. But if I could beat someone or get a medal then that’s just a bonus.” Brian started the morning off with a bang claiming gold in the 60m sprint, before blowing his hamstring in the 100m. A group of friends and family were there to support the Thornalleys at the athletics track.

A lone Australian fan shows his support in a packed Fanzone in central Nelson on Sunday night. He didn’t have much to cheer about though, as the All Blacks won the match and will now play in the final this Sunday Night. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
Nelson to join final party FROM PAGE 1 about rugby and now I support the All Blacks,” he says. Local supporter Hannah Soper says she had a great time in the Fanzone and was surprised by the amount of people who turned up and the noise they produced. “It was heaps of fun, I’m really impressed with it.” If the All Blacks were to win this Sunday it would be just their second world crown, the first famously coming 24 years ago against the same opposition as this year’s finale. It also comes after a year of tragedy for the country. First the Pike River mine disaster, then the
Canterbury earthquakes, and now the oil spill. A world cup win for New Zealand’s favourite sports team, in our national sport and on home turf, would be an apt way to lift spirits. Susan says the Nelson Fanzone can take 5000 people; as long as the weather holds out, she is expecting a big crowd. “We saw a lot of families come out on Sunday, and with Monday being a public holiday I hope there will be even more families this weekend.” Kickoff for the game is 9pm but pre-match entertainment, including a live band, will start at 7pm. The Fanzone is an alcohol-free zone but drinkers can watch the big screen television from the outdoor areas of the bars on upper Trafalgar St.

That’s a (w)rap for new video Police bring back ‘zero tolerance’ for long weekend Gentlemen start your engines, Paul Williams is back with a vengeance. The teenage hip-hop star released a brand new song this week and despite relocating to the country’s capital, it’s clear he still has Nelson on his mind. Paul’s latest track ‘Nelson On My Mind’ hit YouTube this weekend and has already accumulated more than 1000 views, and although the song is “another Nelson classic to add to the list,” the former Nelson College student says it’s good to get more music online after slowing down in the past year. The 19 year-old rapper has made a name for himself on YouTube with hit tracks like Night ‘n’ Day, Nelson State of Mind, Slice of Paul and more recently, Chicken, gaining a combined total of more than 330,000 views. Nelson On My Mind sees Paul back on the piano and he says the song was inspired by his time away from the sunshine city. Paul is currently studying music theatre at the Whitereia School of Performing Arts. “I doubt anyone in Wellington will enjoy it that much. But it’s just getting back to my roots, my Nelson roots,” says Paul. “I miss it quite a bit, and that’s a little bit what this song is about.” But the song was only created when his latest project was put on the backburner. Paul has created another song which he hopes will be played on television, but is waiting for friend Jack Tippler to finish working on the set

of the Hobbit in order for the filming to commence. “I was getting a bit impatient, so I was making some more songs and I just decided to make this one myself, just go budget and borrow the school camera.” Paul says he has a few more songs in the pipeline that discover unchartered territory, bouncing his many different influences together. “A lot of my previous stuff is either a remix of an already existing song or something that fits in to the hip-hop genre. Now I’m trying something else. Blurring the line between genres is what I’m trying to do now.”
The reason behind the transformation isn’t so mysterious, with Paul being a known fan of musical theatre, choir singing, jazz, and well, all kinds of music. In fact, Paul’s other goal, aside from becoming a rapper, is singing on Broadway. And he hopes to follow in a certain Daniel Radcliffe’s magical footsteps. “Recently Harry Potter has been on broadway in a musical. So I figure that if you’re famous enough you just get in. So I’m going to work my way in backwards.” Paul is planning on releasing another mixture later in the year.
Police are hoping for a safe weekend on the roads this Labour Weekend and are reminding drivers of their lowered speed tolerance of 4km/h. Lowering the tolerance has made a real difference to the number of deaths on the roads over previous holiday periods since it was introduced last year. Tasman District’s Road Policing Manager Inspector Jenni Richardson said drivers could expect roads to be busy with the holiday coinciding with the final Rugby World Cup 2011 game and other events across the district. “There are large number of tourists driving around the country who may be unfamiliar with our roads and our unique driving conditions. Along with the increase in holiday traffic drivers can expect to see an increase in road policing as well. Inspector Richardson said all of the road policing staff in Tasman will be on duty for the long weekend. “If you break a traffic law you will have a high chance of being apprehended. I’m hoping that the high visibility policing and the public education around lowered speed tolerance will have an impact on infringements and crashes on our roads.” The lowered speed tolerance was introduced last Queen’s Birthday after a disastrous Easter when 12 people died on the roads. Police now implement the lowered tolerance for all holiday periods and have recorded a corresponding reduction in deaths on the roads during holiday periods. “We know it has made a real difference,” said Inspector Richardson.

Fashion designers take their sheets to ‘fun way’
Project Funway contestant Gracie Anne Nelson’s design takes center stage on the runway as spectators admire the design aesthetic. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
Fashion Island shopping centre was transformed into a runway and spectator gallery as Project Funway unleashed Nelson’s design creativity on Saturday. Designers were supplied with a plain white king sized bed sheet, as their canvas and the rest was up to the imagination and inspiration of the participants. The outcome was a snapshot of Nelson’s inventiveness with designs ranging from grunge-punk inspired outfits to chic, tailored gowns. “We were very impressed with the creativity of all the contestants, says Fashion Island centre manager Susan Matz. “From the primary school-aged contestants through to those in the open category, we were just totally amazed with their work.” In an update to the format, from a single winner in the inaugural event last year, this year there were three categories with a winner in each; primary/intermediate; secondary to 18 years and open. The change was mainly due to there being so much talent throughout the spectrum of participants. “We wanted the little children who are amazing
as well, to be able come first in their own right,” says Susan. There were three awards given out per category, with first prize in each section receiving $500 dollars worth of Fashion Island vouchers and $250 going to second place. Award recipients featured Orrin Croft (primary), with a work titled ‘Day and Night’ that converted from a summery daytime outfit to an evening dress. Celia Kent (secondary) decorated her little black dress with finely woven fabric roses. Kathryn Furniss won the open category, with inspiration straight from your grandmother’s china cabinet. Blue and white were the tones with a stunning print of swallows in the Staffordshire Blue Willow pattern. With many of the designers and models walking the runway for the first time, the butterflies must have been fluttering, but the fashion aficionados showed their support. “There was loud applause, cheering and whistling, which were perfect because the contestants were pretty nervous,” says Susan.

Local artist inspired landscapes win approval
NICE VIEW: Nelson landscape artist Michelle Bellamy is currently exhibiting at the Rutherford Gallery. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
One Retirement Village Cottage and One Standalone Retirement Dwelling - Now Available
Being from Nelson, a great artistic talent is always going to have a head start on their contemporaries. For Michelle Bellamy, putting those inspiring regional qualities into words is done as with the same expertise as a brush stroke. “The coast is a big influence, and the colour. The colour is very saturated here it’s very blue sky, very Kiwi and coastal and bright.” You can see the region in Michelle’s paintings, quite literally, as she draws from the most prominent features for her work. “I’ve been haunting the boulder bank baches for quite a few years, it’s so beautiful on a calm, sunny day,” Michelle reflects. The multi-talented artist is recognized as one of this country’s leading landscape artists, exhibiting her work at the Rutherford Gallery since she was 14. Michelle’s collection of boulder bank bach paintings is currently on show at Rutherford Gallery as part of the Arts Festival. Having had success at such a young age, Michelle may give you the impression that breaking into the art scene is a bit of a breeze, however this is not the
case. “To be successful it takes a lot of hard, hard work, I mean I worked 15 hours yesterday. It’s not just doodling away, it’s digging in and getting the hard work done when you need to.” Being mostly self-taught, Michelle’s parents played a big part shaping her artistic views. “They are the best critiques, it’s the best thing really, it makes you better and I don’t get enough of it” adds Michelle. Michelle is well travelled, as you may expect, but her visits to Europe, Canada and the US were by no means art excursions. “I actually did it for mountain biking, yeah I mountain biked over there and raced competitively.” That’s right, Michelle is a world-class cross-country mountain biker competing at the world championships. Michelle’s advice for any other young artists in the region, is to fully commit to your work; work hard and don’t give up. “Everyone starts from the same place, I mean just a few years ago I was driving around with paintings in my boot, knocking down gallery doors. It’s just what it takes.”

Knitting our Open Home wooly heroes All Black fans all over the country are showing their support ahead of this weekend’s world cup final – even with wool. Nelson’s Betty Batchelor, 83, has been knitting woollen toys since she was 10 years-old and sells them from her Vanguard St home. She says her latest creations have been inspired by the current crop of All Blacks, despite not being the biggest fan. “My dad used to play for Waimea but I’m not really into it so I thought I’d get involved this way.” The dolls have been selling like hot cakes. It takes Betty several days to knit one and already she has sold more than 15 since the start of the tournament. “I’ve been very busy, I had one chap come in and buy six of them.” Betty is well-known around Nelson for knitting the dolls and earlier this year knitted the entire wedding party from the royal wedding. That too has since been sold. Sounds like success for Nelson brass band members The heartbeat of brass music in this country resides right here in Nelson and that beat will be accompanied this week by 40 of New Zealand’s top young brass players. The Secondary Schools Brass Band of New Zealand is assembling in Nelson this week, under the direction of Nick Sharpe, a man credited with transforming the genre in this city. Also being selected in the band is four Nelson Vivace Youth Band members. Danielle McQuinn, of Nayland College, Madeleine Burton and Fenella Deans, both of Nayland College, and Ben Wotherspoon, of Waimea College, fought off tough competition to get seats on 2nd cornet, solo horn, bass trombone, and 2nd horn respectively. The band will meet up this Thursday at Teapot Valley to work on new songs over the weekend before taking their talents to local schools and hosting a concert at Nelson’s Theatre Royal. Nick, who is in charge of the band for his second year, says it is always an exciting time when they get together again and he is expecting great things. “Last year I gave them a very difficult piece first up and they nailed it, so I’m expecting that high standard to continue this year.” Evan Sayer, executive member of the National Brass Band Association, says Nelson is becoming quite a centre for brass music. “This is the second year it has been held in Nelson and it’s a great venue for a course of this nature. We are looking forward to the good weather, supportive musical community and the good facilities available to us. There is some wonderful brass teaching going on in the local schools and community and it’s a reflection of the quality of that teaching that a number of members in this year’s band actually come from Nelson.”

Danielle McQuinn was a member of the band last year and says she is looking forward to catching up with her peers. “It’s always fun when we get together and we have a good time but it’s also pretty cool to play the music we do, it is an amazing experience to be involved in such high level of music making.” Nick says brass band music in Nelson is still getting stronger and he would like to see more locals in the band in the coming years. “We had a plan, way back in 2007
and it’s coming to fruition. Nelson is a real hub for brass bands in New Zealand and hopefully we will continue to produce very strong players.” The band will give a concert at the Nelson Theatre Royal on Monday October 24 at 7.30 (adults $10, children $5, family $35, door sales) under the baton of Nick Sharpe. The concert will feature a wide variety of music from early to modern, with a few surprises thrown in. Groups from the band will also visit schools around the region on Tuesday and Wednesday 25 and 26 October.

Forced into the Army 50 years on Imagine watching Lotto, but instead of the numbers shooting out and potentially winning you millions, they won you a place in the Army. That was exactly the fate for 20 year-old Lindsay Jukes and 18 year-old Malcolm Melven around 50 years ago. The pair were drafted into the National Service Training, a compulsory military training scheme that was in place in New Zealand during the 1950’s, and after a short break, again in the 1960’s. They, along with other locals who were a part of the compulsory military training, are hosting a national reunion in Nelson to celebrate 50 years of the National Service. For Malcolm, he was drafted into the CMT – or compulsory military training – that was in force in the 1950’s to help build up a strong list of trained men in the decade after World War 2. He says the 14 week initial training and then yearly refreshers were “fun” and he enjoyed the experience. “It wasn’t an option so you didn’t think about it, you had to go and had to behave so we did. The punishment of acting up wasn’t worth it,” he says. He recalls several of his fellow draftees having to scrub rocks with toothbrushes and dig holes, only to then fill then in again. “It was pretty demoralising for them so the easiest thing was to keep your trap shut.” CMT was closed down in 1958, but when Keith Holyoke entered parliament four years later the Vietnam War was back in full force and he brought back the military training under the new name National Service. Draftees were selected by a national ballot, using the balls from the game show Golden Kiwi, comparative to the modern Lotto. If your birthday date was drawn, you had to go into the military. Lindsay Jukes entered several years after Malcolm, when it was called National Service, and says the mammoth journey from Southland to Waiouru in the North Island was an adventure for him. “I was 20 and had never been to the North Island, so I looked forward to it. I caught the train to Christchurch, the boat from Lyttleton to Wellington and then the train again, it was a hellava long way.” He says he made plenty of mates there, some he is still in contact with, and is expecting people from all over New Zealand, and even some from Australia, to attend the reunion in Nelson next April. Any locals that would like to be involved can send him an email on ljukes@vodafone.net.nz or call 544 5749.

Spending an afternoon with Nelson’s homeless may not be in most school curriculums, but for Nelson College student Doug Colling it will help him gain legitimate NCEA credits this year. Doug talked to the city’s famous street person Hone Ma Heke as part of a documentary on the man and his story for the Briefs Film Festival – a student film festival that media studies students around the region are working towards. The film festival is held each year at the Suter Theatre, it involves around 40 year 12 and 13 students from high schools all over the region. Students have worked on their documentary and drama films for most of the third term and they range in time from approximately four to eight minutes. Doug Colling says interviewing Hone Ma Heke while homeless was an interesting experience. “It was like interviewing a freelance politician, protester and magician all in one,” he says. His first attempt to produce a documentary this
year for the curriculum had him realise that “it’s hard making documentaries,” but is looking forward to seeing other student projects. Another student, Dominique Donaghy from Nelson College for Girls, produced a documentary on Kapa Haka in New Zealand and says she wanted to highlight the hard work that goes into it. “It’s often seen but not talked about.” This year’s media studies project has allowed Dominique to produce what she feels is a better idea, based on her experiences, and she has also improved in film and editing techniques from last year’s drama film, she says. The Briefs film festival will feature a range of other topics including a take on the horrors of NCEA as an entry from Motueka, the bright and colourful Q-Youth and teenage perceptions of Ngawhatu. The festival is open to the public to showcase and celebrate student films that the public rarely get to see. It is being held on October 26, with tickets on sale that day at Nelson College for Girls for $6.

Nelson banker wins Sing a song and gain plenty more, says tutor Dream of singing? Dream no more, the past singing experience where they were yourself – you’re just enjoying the moultimate prize Beginners Singers course via Nayland told to either mouth the words, not sing ment – that’s when the pleasant surprisAdult Continuing Education aims to get at all, or worst yet, that they couldn’t es happen.
Bill Monk will manage to tick off one thing on his wife’s bucket list this weekend, as he jets off to the Rugby World Cup final. The banker was the recipient of an internal ANZ/ National Group prize pool that saw him win two tickets to the final along with flights and accommodation all paid for. Close to 3000 staff members entered the competition, which included five Rugby World Cup based questions, and Bill’s name was pulled out of the hat. “I rang my wife and I was like ‘put some wine in the fridge for dinner because I’m coming home early. I’ve won something better than money.’ And I came and said I had won two tickets to the Rugby World Cup and flights and accommodation for three nights in Auckland,” he says. Bill says going to a Rugby World Cup was on his wife’s bucket list, which was made two years ago. “It was a bit of a dream really. We always wanted to go. It’s just unbelievable.” With three rugby-mad sons, it was always going to be his wife Nerida who came on the trip. And while there’s no doubt Bill will be expecting a New Zealand win, the Richmond man said he would not have minded if the All Blacks hadn’t reached the final from a spectacle point of view. “The chance to go up there and experience the atmosphere, even it had been two neutral sides, will be awesome. Some of my friends had been to the quarter finals and said we wouldn’t believe it.” The feedback from his work mates had been very positive and they were all pleased that he won. “There’s been a lot of banter, and I’m pretty chuffed that they’ve all said good on you.” Bill is also hoping to meet plenty of overseas fans and get a taste of how they support rugby. “Going up there is not just about the rugby for me. I want to sit down and talk to the rest of the other nations and mingle with those people. I want to learn from their experiences and show New Zealand can be good hosts. They’re all human at the end of the day.”

anyone singing without worrying about who’s listening. Often people have a secret desire to sing but a lot of fear of what others will think of them and their voice says course tutor Barbara Ann Grant. “No wonder, when talent quests are everywhere but opportunities for people to sing without having your talent judged are hard to come by.” Barbara Ann says the benefits of singing are so fantastic. “I get a lot of ‘casualties’ who’ve had some
sing. “That’s a crime that this course is here to fix. Given the right environment most everyone can shine at singing.” The adult education course aims to create a space where people don’t feel judged to try. Course content involves low stress, fun games to get people relaxed and enjoying themselves, then looks at singing basics like posture, breath, resonance, pitch, rhythm and harmony. The goal is to get really engaged with what you’re doing so you’re not judging
Barbara Ann says the most rewarding thing for her is when a student, who in the first lesson stands in the doorway, for fear of actually coming in the room and by the end of the sixth weeks sings a solo to the whole group. “Their sense of pride in their achievement brought tears to their and the classes eyes. That’s huge.” The course is open to anyone, for more info contact Kathryn Schlater on 547 9769 or email kathryns@nayland. school.nz

“A million shades of green……..” Cruze took me for a walk the other day, (anyone who sees us while out and about on our walks will attest to the fact that this is true!) He is only 22 months old but at 40 odd kilos he does tend to be in charge at least some of the time. We were wending our way up the Marsden Valley and it just looked so beautiful up on the hills with all the different shades of green – there must have been hundreds. The trees in this area are well established and many beautiful species are flowering and leafing up at this, my favourite time of the year. Flowering cherries dotted the hill with spots of pink and white while the large Rhododendrons are looking fabulous, with their bright flowers making a truly lovely coloured
canopy. Elms, oak, chestnuts and willows are all starting to move with beautiful fresh green leaves and of course the Kowhai stands proudly, fairly dripping with golden flowers. They are looking particularly good this season. The photo this edition is another of my favourite trees. This is the simply fabulous Cornus “Cloud 9”. It is a C.florida X C.nuttallii hybrid and is one of the earliest to set those lovely flowering bracts. They are not petals as such, but they cover the fairly insignificant flowers that are set right in the middle of the bloom. I look at this lovely tree from my dining room window. Cornus florida (Flowering Dogwoods) are native to north eastern USA and can grow to 8 metres or more in their original form. The hybrids that we are able to buy here are some of the most attractive and smaller growing varieties – look for Cornus “Pink Flame” and “Cherokee Chief ” Great range of as well as Florida • Herbs • Vegetables variegata. Another popular Cornus seen around Nelson – some beautiful specimens are growing outside the Stoke Medical Centre Independent Kerb & Concrete on Waimea Rd – is Cornus “EdSpecialising in hand-made dies White Wonder,” and he repavers, driveways, patios and ally is! He will be flowering in the general concrete work. next week or two so look out as you drive by. We could go on for hours about the varieties Northern Hemisphere Cornus, as there are hundreds, but for me “Eddie” and “Cloud 9 “are my pick! They like a good fertile soil – neutral to acid ph, and will do well in sun or semi – shade. Did I mention that they also have really vi-
brant autumn colour, from orange to deep red, which makes them a real winner in any garden setting.

Now, back to work, and I was going to talk about lawn care and maintenance. This is the last month to do this as it will soon be too hot….I hope! Every 3 years or so it is a good idea to scarify your lawn. You do this by using a scarifying rake which has a twisted tine so it cuts through the grass and rakes up a lot of the old thatch that gathers over time. It is this build-up of old grass that stops the water getting through to the roots of the lawn and you really notice a difference if this is done every now and then. Your lawn will look as though it is having a “bad hair day” and the neighbours will think you are taking housekeeping to a whole other level, but your lawn will thank you. Next step aerate – you can do this by hiring a roller with pikes all over it, by strapping spikes to bottom of your shoes (yes – you can buy these I believe) and jumping about all over the grass, or my preferred method is getting the man who digs holes to go over the lawn with the garden fork, in straight rows of course, while you make a cup of tea! Once this is done you can then spread your preferred fertiliser and in most cases you will either have to water it in, or as the cost of water is fairly steep in Nelson, you could wait for rain. Don’t worry, after you have done all of the above the neighbours won’t turn a hair when they see you out in the rain throwing little white pellets everywhere. There are various lawn foods on the market. Quick fix feed for instant results is probably a granular uncoated fertiliser
which has to be spread evenly – so you don’t end up with a striped lawn – and this must be watered in well so as not to burn the grass. Scotts products are my preference. They have a range of coated fertilisers, some with weed killers (read the instructions), some with a wetting agent (good for water saving), and the good old Lawn Builder. If you want to feed a lawn that is less than 12 months old, Scotts have a Starter and Repair fertiliser which can be used safely without burning tender young grass.
Q& A Pleased to say we have a question from our first column. Evan from Motueka wants to know how to get rid of whitefly. Well Evan – the short answer to this is “with great difficulty”! They are really clever dudes who lay their eggs right in and under leaves which makes the spraying difficult. The adults will just fly off when you approach and land again when you go. You have been using Target which is a translaminar contact spray working through the leaf from one side to the other so it should do the trick. You must get to the underside of the leaves where the eggs and nymphs are to be effective. Here are some other suggestions: Confidor, which is a systemic spray and has not been around as long as Target, so a change might be good. I don’t like sprays which are harmful to bees and other good things, so would suggest “Beat a Bug” which is a spray and food in one, and is garlic and chilli based with natural pyrethrins. It also contains a fixative which may give you better adherence. It will still kill bees when wet and should be sprayed in the evening and not in full sun. I have also been told that a good squirt with the hose under the leaves will deter them as they do not lay eggs on a wet surface….good luck!

than 1,500 spectators, making it one of the largest participation events in the South Island. This is the first time the games have been held in Nelson, utilising the region’s world-class Saxton Field complex for the games administration and sporting events. Athletes will compete in traditional Olympic sports such as Shooting, Cycling, Swimming and Athletics, along with a huge array of team events such as Netball, Volleyball, Basketball and Touch. For the talented, but perhaps not-so-active, there is Pool, Snooker, Mini-golf and even cards, with Euchre and Cribbage also available. Adding to the excitement of the games, new events such as Disc Golf, Ultimate, Motocross, Kart Racing and the Ocean Swim have been included. The Games is more than a sporting event, it is a cultural event with a major social element; there is a range of entertainment, including dancing, live performances and music. Participants come to party, network, and test themselves, all in the interests of mental and physical wellbeing. The Games helps promote the ‘Masters movement,’ aiming to get more people participating in sports. The South Island Masters Games has received sponsorship this year from the Nelson Events Marketing & Development Programme, which is funded by the Nelson City Council. Masters Games President, John Allan, feels that it is a great thing for the district; “I think this will bring more in to the economy of the area than the Rugby World Cup.” The games will now alternate each year between Nelson and Timaru.

Three New Zealand Masters 10km track walk records have been broken at the opening athletics event at the NZCT South Island Masters Games in Nelson today. The NZCT South Island Masters Games 2011, supported by the Nelson City Council and the NZ Community Trust, is being held in Nelson for the first time from 15 – 23 October. Three thousand athletes aged over 30 years old will compete across 50 sports in-front of more than 1,500 spectators, making it one of the largest participation events in the South Island. In perfect Spring conditions, three Nelson walkers broke their respective age group 10 km Track Walk records this morning at the Saxton Field Athletics Track.
Wendy Healy smashed the 35-39 year old age group record (72 19.0) by 16 minutes, which had been held by Katie Tahere since 2009. Wendy’s time was 56 16.97. Wendy says she felt really great the whole way. “I was feeling really good - it was just like going out for a Sunday walk,” Healy says. “My goal was to achieve under 57 minutes and I did that, which is great. This week I am also doing the 5km and 10km events and the Half Marathon, so I am going to enjoy a night off tonight and then focus on tomorrow and the rest of the week.” Nyle Sunderland completed the 10km walk this morning in 56 34.65, breaking Gillian MacDougall’s record (57 38.0) in the 40-44 year old age group by 1 min and 4 secs. Gillian had held the record since 2003. Nyle says she is absolutely ecstatic. “I am really rapt that I have done so well this morning,” Sunderland says. “My coach said to pick a pace today and stay with it, so I had 57 minutes in my mind, and I was under that pace the whole way round. My next personal goal is a 20km trial walk in two weeks time, so this was a great training walk.” Neroli Amyes broke the 55 -59 year old age group record (60 00.35) achieved last year by Sue Hoskin. Her time was 57 30.72. She says she went a lot faster than expected. “Time for me was a bit of an unknown factor because I haven’t raced for so long, so I am really pleased with how I did,” Amyes says. “There was a lot of support Jean Walker of Nelson playing tennis at the South Island Mason the track and I kept really ters Games over the weekend.

focused because we are closely judged in walk races.” Athletics event organiser Derek Shaw says having three records broken by Nelsonians was a great way to mark Nelson’s first ever South Island Masters Games. “We had 12 walkers compete in the 3000m, then Wendy, Nyle and Neroli continued on to complete 10km and break the New Zealand Masters records,” Shaw says. “For much of it Wendy and Nyle were neck in neck, which made it very exciting. We knew early on in the race that they were making really good time, so it was just fantastic. Well done to all the athletes.” Meanwhile, the following walkers won the 3000m race: 60-64 year old Women: Rosalind Dagnilli from Nelson. 65-69 year old Women: Marion McIntosh from Nelson. 55-59 year old Men: Ross Mitchell from Nelson. 60-64 year old Men: Keith Rutherford from
Rakaia. 65-69 year old Men: Murray Williams from Nelson. There is likely to be plenty more records tumble over the next five days so get out there Nelson and watch some of the great action and if you are in the region for the games, good luck and have a great time. What’s behind the whale door? The mystery of what lies behind the door inside the whale has been unlocked – too bad the door hasn’t. The whale, which sits beached on the Lions Playground in Tahunanui, holds a door to what many locals questioned could be treasure, or even the whale’s stomach. But the fact of the matter is the door holds nothing and it hasn’t for more than ten years. When the Lions Playground was built in XXXXX, the whale was used as storage unit for the tools and timber. Once the playground was completed the door was rarely opened, and after ten long years, rust has kept the door shut, needing a blowtorch to get in. And while Lions Playground member Peter Vining insists there is no treasure, he remains certain that there still isn’t any use for the door or its storage unit, and it will continue to stay shut as the years pass. “In the early stages when it was being built we needed somewhere to store our tools and we actually had power in here too. We had long lengths of timber in there,” says Paul. “But it was always constructed as a whale.” During the construction, the whale was broken into. But that appears a lot more difficult now with more rigorous locking and years of rust keeping the door shut. “That was a problem. We had padlocks on it, and of course the padlocks got broken off and people got in to it. But other than our tools, there was never anything of value in there. But we’ve got the castle now that we can store things in.” Paul says the mystery of the whale had always fascinated locals. “You do get kiddies coming in and saying ‘what’s behind the door?’ And I think they want to see the whale’s insides.” But with the mystery finally unveiled, the rumours can finally be put to the sea bed.

Table note leads to WW2 mystery iPhone theft leads to A set of tables bought in a second hand store in Petone has provided a blast from the past for a local RSA, with a note explaining how the original owner came about the tables, on VE Day. Richmond RSA president Terry Richardson received a letter from the manager of Te Omanga Hospice in Lower Hutt, explaining the table purchase and the hidden note which read: “Theresa and Anthony, this nest of tables has quite a history. On VE Day, 9th May 1945 (Victory over Europe) we had HUGE celebrations in Nelson and my Dad was the president of the Richmond RSA and they held a big ball in Richmond to which we all went. My Dad asked me to help sell raffle tickets for it and he bought me a ticket and lo and behold I won this nest of tables!” Further investigation by current president Terry uncovered that the president at the time was H E Stratford, but the association doesn’t have much more information. Terry says he would love to find out more about the tables, Mr Stratford, and his daughter who wrote the note. “It was amazing really, to get something like this in the mail. The lady who won the tables is quite possibly still alive and perhaps has some relatives in Nelson that could shed some more light on them and her father. It’s pretty unreal that these tables have such a close link with our RSA.” Terry says he isn’t interested in getting the tables back in Richmond because they “obviously use them a real deal,” but would love to get as much information as possible. If you know anything more about the table, contact Terry via the Nelson Weekly at 548 4949 or editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz.

Sailing action heats up with Extension winning handicap race
Dream comes true
Twenty six boats in two divisions lined up for race three of the Wednesday night spring series in a light northeast breeze. The 15 division one boats were lead out the harbour by Redline (Stuart Morgan) but by the top mark Wild Oats (Robert Greenwood) had taken the lead, which they increased on the spinnaker run home, to finish 12 minutes ahead of the GBE catamaran (Hilton Grant) and third across the line was Extension (Mar-
tin Stratford & David Pluck). It was the Extension crew’s best race since missing most of last season, due to a broken mast early in the season. Extension was first on handicap. The 11 division two boats, sailing a shorter course than division one was lead from start to finish by John Cotton’s South Seas Clipper, second home was Otnip (Mark Bishop) third Nattai (Lee Nixon & Marijke Boers). Excitement is at an all time high for Wellington Tornadoes footballer Ross McPhie, now that he has raised all the cash needed for his tour of the United States. Ross, 14, was selected for the Wellington side after his coach read about his goal scoring Chatham Cup debut in the Nelson Weekly. The Nelson Suburbs midfielder will compete in the US for a month during December and January and says a quiz night was the main benefactor in helping him raise the $9000 needed. “It went pretty well. Guy [Smith, the team’s coach] supported us really well by coming down,” says Ross. “There was so much support there. When the auctions started, people were going over the actual price which was pretty amazing.” Ross admits that when he was first selected, he

thought it would be near impossible to raise all the money that he did. “But it feels pretty amazing now. Everything has all worked out.” The Tornadoes will compete in the Disney Soccer Showcase, a tournament played in front of 800 different college scouts, as well as in friendly matches against the academies of Major League Soccer franchises. All the players will visit US colleges and get in insight into how the scholarship system works. “I just want to go over there and see what the quality is like overseas compared to here.” Ross is currently attending the latest National Training Centre, hosted by New Zealand Football to indentify and develop players for future FIFA Under-17 World Cups, but says he would like to thank everyone who helped him with his fundraising.

Saloon driver Ian Burson with his freshly-painted car, ready for the start of the Speedway season next week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Speedway season revs up Ian Burson has taken to his new super saloon like a duck to water. Freshly sign painted, Ian now is ready to hit the track ahead of the Top of the South Speedway season and has his eyes firmly set on the New Zealand Championship, which he hopes will book him with another visit to the sign-writers. But whether it's 1NZ or 21n, Ian is confident that his new car has enough horse power to see him reach career best times in 2011/12. Ian's new saloon is based on a C6 Corvette and was built in Tauranga while the Chevrolet engine was constructed in Auckland. Ian is a former New Zealand Super Saloon Grand Prix winner but will be competing in search of the New Zealand Championship on home soil come January, following the announcement that Nelson will be hosting the championship on January 13 and 14. Ian says after five years of impressive results, he needed to upgrade in order to catch the top tier of drivers. "Last year we were struggling on the longer tracks to keep up with the other guys," says Ian. "There was only two or three of them, but
those are the two or three that you've gotta beat to be a New Zealand champion." His new car unleashes a lot more horse power and Ian says the modern technology makes driving it feel like you're sitting on a Lazy Boy. "It just makes the car so much more responsive. Instead of me working really hard, I just sit back and drive it." The speedway season begins with fireworks on October 29, but Ian will have to wait for his chance to unleash some fireworks of his own as the night is one of the mandatory stand-down nights for the super saloon class. But with three practices already under his belt, Ian will be heading off to Christchurch this weekend. He says the chance to host the New Zealand Championship will go a long way in his bid to become the New Zealand champion. "When other drivers come to Nelson they really struggle. But for us, if you can drive here then you can drive anywhere in the country. It's so small and it's so fast. It's our ultimate goal. We will get there one day, it's just a matter of when."
Now is the time for athletes to register for the coming Athletics Nelson track and field season. And with the Saxton Oval pavilion now finished, Athletics Nelson head coach Greg Lautenslager is tipping a new dawn for the sport in the region. The best chance for aspiring athletes to sign up for the 2011/12 season is at the Athletics Nelson Open Night on Wednesday October 26 at the Sports House at Saxton Stadium. The evening will feature talks from New Zealand athletes Alex Jordan and Waimea College long jumper Brendon Barnett, and is a key opportunity to get all the information about the season. The Open Night starts at 5:30pm and there will be free food and drink as well as highlights from
the IAAF World Athletics Championship. The new season will also be highlighted by the new Saxton Oval pavilion which is now open. The pavilion will enable better viewing and seats for spectators as well as top class facilities for athletes including changing rooms, The biggest event on the calendar for the coming season will be the Harold Nelson Classic. The event is already attracting huge interest throughout the country and New Zealand Mens-19 hurdle record holder Mike Cochrane has thrown his name in to the hat alongside Alex and Brendon. Mike is likely to race in the 100m and 200m sprints.

Top women’s cricketer left out of local teams Andrew Board
Otago rep cricketer Victoria Abbott lives in Nelson but can’t find a team to play for this summer. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Otago Sparks all-rounder Victoria Abbott has played cricket every year since she was just eight years-old. But the 23 year-old is in danger of missing the 2011/12 season in Nelson because she can’t find a team that will take her. Victoria competes in the State League, the premier women’s competition in New Zealand Cricket, and last year she featured in the Waimea College boys’ second division side. But with Waimea College folding as a senior first division team, players’ numbers have been condensed into two teams, so Victoria has been on the lookout for a new team, with little success. She says the major factor has been squads already featuring a full roster, but hopes that gender hasn’t played a part in her non-selection. Victoria is so keen to get out on the pitch she’s willing to just field if it helps her get picked up by a club. “I’m getting that feeling that because I’m the only woman cricketer here that they think I’m not up to their level, but I still feel it would be good for my game. I wouldn’t mind if I got in to a team and just fielded. I just love being out there.” Victoria didn’t even know of another woman
cricketer in the region, apart from one whom she played alongside at Waimea. Victoria was born in Amberely but shifted to Dunedin for university. It was there she was selected in to the Otago Sparks squad as middle order batswoman and right in-swinging bowler, and despite moving to Nelson, she has kept loyal with the side. Otago fly her down for matches, she is just responsible for her own training, which she feels is seriously lacking game time. “Ideally I need to be playing for a club. They give me ideas on training and help me out though,” says Victoria. “This year there are a lot of senior players that have stepped down or retired, so it’s my chance to step up.” With the majority of her friends based down south, Victoria is happy to remain with Otago instead of joining Central Districts Hinds, the side that covers the Nelson region. “They’re so good at looking after me and putting the effort in, so I don’t really see myself changing any time soon.” She says she would be pretty gutted to miss out on playing the sport she loves. “I’ve played every weekend since I was eight. Sure I love my weekends, but I’m crazy about sport and cricket is my number one.”

Local volleyball coaches to steer national teams New Zealand volleyball teams are taking note of the talent coming from our region and attempting to get their hands on the reason why Nelson teams perform so well – its coaches. Neil Anderson and Josh Ovsenek have been selected to coach the NZ under 20 junior men’s and under 19 men’s teams, respectively. While Broadgreen Intermediate sports coordinator Helen Bywater will manage the NZ under 17 girls team rounding out an impressive haul of Nelson people in management positions. NZ under 20 junior men’s coach, Neil, is no stranger to a national posting, having previously coached the same team at under 19 level. His squad features four Nelson players and he says the team is hoping to attend the Asian championships next year. This year his team lost a series against Australia 2-1 but he is confident of a strong year in 2012. “Most of the guys I’ve got in the team this year are available next year and there are a few other guys I’ve got my eye on so we should be a very

This year he coached the Tasman under 19 men’s and women’s sides to national glory and he lead the Waimea College girl's side to this years secondary school final. Josh says he’s excited about the appointment and having an opportunity to coach at the international level. “I’m excited, this is a big opportunity for me; it’s a big deal when you get selected for your country.
