Nelson’s power under threat as owners fight Andrew Board Nelson’s power supply is relying on 50 year-old equipment that one of its owners refuses to upgrade, casting major doubt on security of the city’s supply. Network Tasman, a consumer-owned electricity lines company and half owner of Nelson Electricity Limited [NEL], is refusing to spend money on NEL’s substation at St Vincent St, despite the other owner, Marlborough Lines, saying an upgrade is desperately needed. Its refusal to spend money on the upgrade
comes just months after it spent an esti- work Tasman into a multi-million dolmated hundreds of thousands of dollars lar upgrade and says it should go ahead brawling in court with straight away. “We are not prepared to NEL, over the ownership of power lines in Stoke. take risks for the supply NEL supplies power to We don’t really underof Nelson, so our view Nelson City and was is, regardless of a whole stand the reluctance owned by the Nelson lot of other things, aged to get on with things. equipment should be reCity Council until it was sold to Network Tasman placed and we should get – David Dew, Marlborough and Marlborough Lines on with it. board member, David Dew. A power cut, caused by a failure to the city’s substation, could put Nelson into darkness for as long as a week he says. Nelson business leaders say a power cut of that size could cause millions of dollars in damage to Nelson businesses. “I have to say, given the experiences of places like Auckland and elsewhere, our view is that we don’t see any benefit in delaying upgrades,” says Mr Dew. Power to Nelson comes through Network Tasman, based in Hope, it is then sent to Continued on page 3.
Hunt for Nelson’s top team is on Could you be a part of Nelson’ s top team? That is what organisers are asking as they finalise team lists for the second Top Team competition at Saxton Field. Top Team runs on a simular format to the television show, Top Town, by giving teams a range of challenges and events. There are three heats, Motueka, Saxton Field and Murchison, with top qualifers battlling it out in the final at the Moutere Hills Centre in early December. Organiser Hayden Bryant says the event was hugely succesful last year and he is hoping for a simular turn out this year. “We had 14 teams last year and it looks as if we will get that again. Top Team is for anyone who likes a good time and a bit of a challenge, it isn’t for pro’s either, it’s for everyone really.” Nelson team the Vylel Ani Maulz say they are looking forward to the event. “We’re defintley excited, it will be awesome,” says team member Dan Hawke. The Saxton Field heat is being held on Sunday 31, October. Entry forms are avalible from The Vylel Ani Maulz gearing up for the Top Team event at Saxton Field next weekend. Messages to the Nelson campus by Nelson Weekly were not returned but it was confirmed that the University was looking at closing the site. It is expected that there will be some resistance to the move. The Nelson site offers degrees and diplomas in teaching for preschool, primary and secondary. • Nelson city businesses are getting into the spirit of the Nelson Art Festival with ‘Art in Windows’, an initiative from Uniquely Nelson and the Nelson Arts Council. Nelson power: owners fight Continued from page 1. the Stoke substation before going to St Vincent St and distributed to Nelson homes and businesses from there. According to NEL’s 2010 asset management plan, some parts of its substation are more than 50 years old and the independent chairman of NEL, Paul LeGros, would not comment on whether the substation was good enough to guarantee supply, as well as it should, to a city of Nelson’s size. Ian Kearney, chair of Network Tasman, would not comment on the situation as it was a “board matter and it should be kept within the board.” This latest feud between NEL and Network Tasman comes less than a year after a legal dispute, that cost both companies, owned by the people of Nelson and Tasman, hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to a Nelson Weekly source. Legal opinions from Queen’s Counsel’s were obtained by both companies which did not give either the comfort of who owned the disputed lines in Stoke, says Mr LeGros. So, in March 2008, Network Tasman issued proceedings against NEL to have the matter decided in the High Court. “Various settlement conferences were held with
Queen’s Counsel’s representing both parties, which enabled an agreement as to the ownership and use of those lines,” says Mr LeGros. “The dispute was resolved in late 2009 and documented in an agreement in early 2010.” Mr Kearney would not comment on how much was spent on the dispute, but did say the money spent was worth it as the issue had been a long one, stretching back 50 years. While that costly fight is now resolved, Network Tasman is now holding off an upgrade to the ageing substation, prompting Nelson’s mayor-elect, Aldo Miccio to seek answers. “I’m going will follow up with the council chief executive to see if he has been briefed and will be looking to get an explaintion from Network Tasman. Nelson needs to know that its power supply is safe, businesses need to know that.” Mr Dew says the board of Marlborough Lines finds some humour in the situation. “I have to say, we find it highly unusual to be in a position where we are, in that we are from over this side of the hill [in Blenheim] and we are having to push the issue. We don’t really understand the reluctance to get on with things.”

Auckland Point School, along with the Nelson Kindergarten Association, has achieved a Nelson first by having a kindergarten and school on the same grounds, providing a pathway for children. The Kindergarten is licensed for 40 children, six months to five years, including a special area for 10 children under two years, but is starting with just 20 children. The kindergarden opened last week.
Street art is alive and kicking at Founders Heritage Park after a weekend of mad, creative fury. Oi You! is the newest addition to the Nelson Arts Festival and is the brainchild of George Shaw and his “offsider” Nic Foster. The festival started last week and over the weekend 20 selected artists went about creating their masterpieces. Oi You! is an urban art competition with two sections, open and youth. George says there are amazing works from Nelson artists as well as some from Wellington, Christchurch and one from a Dubai artist currently living in Brazil. “They have really captured the street art concept,” he says. Nayland College student Hayden has used an image from a wood carving he did as the inspiration behind his piece. “This image is off my art board at school; my idea is about school shootings. I’m not against guns, just the effects they have on people in the wrong hands.” This Saturday, 23 Oct at 6 to 8pm, Seventeen year old Hayden Gundry of Nayland College creating his piece of art which the urban art works will be aucis part of Oi You! a street art show that’s the newest addition to the Nelson Arts Festitioned off, with comedian Te Raval. Ash Millar loves fish. He loves to catch fish, eat fish and, most recently, mount them on his wall. Ash has just won first prize in the hobby section of the national taxidermist awards in Taupo last month, his second in as many years. His first dip into the world of taxidermist came three years ago after finally deciding to give it a go, seeing it for the first time as a youngster. “I’ve fished all my life, I love it, it’s my main thing. So it’s keeping a hold of your big catches and the art aspect
of it as well. Recreating it and seeing the end product gives me a lot of satisfaction.” Although Ash had been keen to have a crack at it, the world of taxidermistary is a rather secretive one. “It’s one of those things, where do you start? About ten or fifteen years ago I saw that they did a course on it at the polytech here, so I rang up about that and it just so happened that it was the last course because there was no interest in it. So it was put on the backburner again.” About three years ago Ash decided, “nah I’m
just going to give it a go” and put a plan together on how to best get a mold of the fish and spray-paint the mold. Since then, Ash has won two national first places at the annual awards in Taupo, the latest coming just three weeks ago. He says he would like to make a full-time career from his hobby but for now is on the hunt for a big brown trout to immortalize. “In Taupo it is all about trout, I’d love to go up there and beat them at their own game with a nice big South Island trout,” he says.

Fundraiser is all about women
Penelope Butler, Anne Biggs and Sue Sweeny are organising an evening just for women titled “It’s all about you” at the Victory School Hall next month. Photo: Andrew Board.
November 6 will be a night to remember for Nelson women. After a tough year, three local women are organising an evening to celebrate womanhood and get to know one another. The night, It’s All About You, will have a guest speaker, nibbles and plenty of opportunities to meet new people and perhaps forge friendships, say the trio. The evening is being held at the Victory School Hall, but Penelope Butler says she would like to see women from all walks of life attend. “It’s a great opportunity to leave the kids with dad, boyfriend or friends and come down to enjoy yourself.” A ticket costs $10 per person with all proceeds going to Camp Quality, a charity for children living with cancer. “We’ve had amazing support from businesses as well, we have had a lot of giveaways donated, so hopefully quite a few women will go home with something special,” says Penelope. For more information call Penelope on 548 4135, Anne Biggs on 545 0734 or Sue Sweeny on 544 8550.

Put Your Best Foot Forward This Spring! If you suffer from cracked heels, corns, ingrown toenails, calluses or dead skin – it’s nice to know that there is someone who can take care of them all. Eniko (Anni) Fekete is a European Chiropodist and Beautician, trained in Budapest and with 17 years experience. Anni can have your feet looking and feeling great. ‘Cracked heels, corns and ingrown toenails can look unsightly and cause considerable pain, and if not treated, can sometimes lead to infection. ‘I specialise in relieving the painful symptoms, treat the underlying problems and make your feet look great, ready for those summer sandals,’ Anni Eniko Fekete promises Anni. ‘I use a warm foot bath and specialised products that will make your treatments less like a clinical procedure and more like a pampering session. I concentrate on callus and dead skin removal until the soles of your feet are entirely smooth, corn and ingrown nail removal, nail and cuticle care, followed by massage and topped off with your favourite nail colour.’ Reflexology is another area Anni is passionate about. This treatment works on the whole body so that all of the interrelated parts function together in harmony. In particular reflexology can help with concentration, lower back pain, bowel disorders, digestive difficulties, sore throats, help boost self confidence, help you breathe easier, increases heart and liver function and can improve fertility. Anni offers all of the treatments you would expect from a beautician – facials, waxing, eyelash tints, manicures and pedicures. Particularly popular is the Galvanic non-surgical face-lift. It helps to lift, tone and firm ageing facial tissue with low frequency settings to allow stimulation of the epidermis, improving the appearance, condition and texture of the skin. Anni operates from Fitness Zone in McIndoe Place, Richmond. Call her to arrange a consultation and take advantage of her spring specials.
Riverside Health and Fitness manager Dave McKenzie pumping up a tyre on one of the new bikes now avalible for hire at Riverside. Photo: Andrew Board.
Riverside pulls cyclists to its new service Riverside is known for its pool and gym but this summer it may be the hub for another activity – biking. Riverside Health and Fitness manager Dave McKenzie says he decided to introduce bikes to the centre to widen its range and because he loves mountain biking and saw a demand for tourists, and locals, wanting a spin. He says Riverside is the only pool in the country offering the service.
“We’ve got a great supply here of mountain bikes and even tandem’s and we’ve had quite a few people come in and hire them for a few hours. We had a couple of tourists who had been driving around in a camper, hire some bikes just to cycle to Tahuna beach for a few hours. We include maps, safety gear and other ideas on where to go as well.” The bikes are avalable at Riversides front counter. For more information call 546 3221.

Sonic live zone a hit
Once the Masked Parade finished, the party was just beginning for many locals, as a handful of Nelson’s top young acts took center stage at the Sonic Live Zone, hosted by Te Awanui Reeder from Nesian Mystik. Headlined by National Smokefree Rockquest runners up, the Peasants of Eden, the Sonic Live Zone was a hit for young and old last Friday night. The lineup also included heavy metalers Musgrave, party punk band Recommended by Your Mom, and crowd favourite Paul Williams. The concert was a huge success say partygoers, and showed encouraging signs for an annual concluNelson hip hop star Paul Williams plays at the Son- sion to the Masked ic live zone on Friday night. Volunteers dig deep for community house Phillip Rollo In 1995, Abbeyfield Tahunanui was just an idea, 15 years on it’s now a reality. Through volunteer work and funding, Abbeyfield Tahunanui was able to gain the required $970,000, and is now fully functional for elderly people who were seeking independence, companionship and safety. “If it wasn’t for the volunteers, if it wasn’t for the sponsors, and the people that have given their time and money, this building wouldn’t be here today,” says chairman Barry Miles. “Administration, arranging finance, and all the landscaping has been done by volunteers. We’ve had a tremendous response from the businesses in Nelson and Richmond, which we’re really grateful for.” The last coat of paint went on the building in Mata Close on August 13, and two days later the 11 residents were welcomed in to the house, which was offically opened on the weekend and is now valued at $2.2million.
Abbeyfield is often referred to as “flatting for seniors” with a community based lifestyle. “We don’t have nursing care, so everyone has to be independent, which they are. You can see people who do the garden, ride their bikes, they’re not very often in the house.” The residents have all enjoyed the first two months in the house. “It’s very good. The food, the people. You can do whatever you want to do, within reason.” says Shirley Varley. While Arthur Cahusac says he enjoys the independence. “I feel very free and easy.” With the opening out of the way, Barry says the administration will now take over and he will start looking at the possibility of an Abbeyfield situated in Richmond. “This really is the final cog in the whole wheel. The residents are all invited to the meetings, so they can have their say, and the executive take on board their feelings and act accordingly. Once this is settled down, we’ll probably be thinking of the Richmond area, it’s a fantastic way of living.”

community. Through the store transformation we’re investing in building a great working environment for our staff, delivering a superior dining experience to our customers and creating a thriving business that local suppliers can benefit from,” he says. “It is especially exciting that as part of this refurbishment we have created 14 new jobs – additional to the 27 existing positions – which have been filled by keen locals. Things are still tight out there so it’s great that KFC Nelson is proactively creating new jobs and opportunities for the local community.” KFC Nelson Store Manager Donna Cook says she has received great support and interest from the local community during the refurbishment. “KFC Nelson has been part of this area for 32 years since we first opened back in 1978 so is well and truly part of the community. “There’s a lot of interest around the development and people have supported us since we reopened. We’ve been very, very busy,” she says. Local building firm Scott Construction lead the team in completing the new KFC in a matter of months. Quantity surveyor Lisette Nelson says it was a real team effort to get it finished by deadline. “It was quite amazing, we had a 15 week contract to get it finished and the guys really stepped up the challenge and produced a really quality job.”

Being part of a strong group with over 120 stores nationwide and now with three in Nelson, Richmond and Motueka, it gives you better buying power and a tried and tested business model that provides convenience, a good range of product options and competitive prices.” And if they don’t have something you want you only have to ask and they will get it in for you. Voyce wins Dun Run Saturday’s 16th Subway Dun Run’s revised course got the ‘thumbs up’ from 112 finishers, with Trevor Voyce first home in 1 hour 39 minutes 49 seconds. However that wasn’t enough for Nelson’s leading multisporter, as after some quick refreshments he was back on the road and another 12kms up to the Maitai Dam to collect his vehicle. Planned though in readiness for a longer distance event next month. Fluer Lattimore also had a good run, probably preferring the old gnarly sections of the track, however that will be reinstated for ‘Classic’ celebrations and the 20th anniversary in 2014. Robin Reid was second man, 70 seconds behind Voyce while Luke Vaughtan of Christchurch couldn’t match the Nelsonians on their home territory. Nelson Events switch to the roads next up with RunMahana on November 27. Healthy numbers are signing up with already well over 400 heading to Woollaston Estates for the half marathon, 10km or 5km option. Visit www. nelsonevents.co.nz for full details plus results of the Subway Dun Run.

Dun Run winner Trevor Voyce crosses the finish line.
College Metro suffered a 3-1 loss to Richmond Athletic in the Price Charity first division knockout final at Guppy Park on Saturday despite playing some sharp football after long layoff. “I think we came off the back of a really good performance in the semi final, when we beat [Nelson] Suburbs 4-1. But unfortunately we had a break, and we lost that cohesion in defense, and I think that showed in the first half,” says College Metro coach Dave Shaw. College showed plenty of fluidity on attack, with Jono Drew, George Kaikui, and Yuki Takahashi constantly threatening the Rich-
mond defense, they just lacked a genuine goal scorer leading the line. As soon as there was pressure on their defense, they conceded a free kick and a penalty, both leading to goals by Jordan Yong and Darren Cunningham. “One or two mistakes in defense cost us those goals. The second half we changed the formation a wee bit, and tried to play more attacking.” Central defender Adam Leckey stood out for College in the second spell, winning every header that came his way, and frustrated first division top goal scorer Wesley Olea. After dominating possession throughout
the game, College finally got their goal when the ball fell to Yuki on the outside of the box, and he smashed the ball past Richmond keeper Karl Numan. But any hope of a comeback was short lived as another lapse in defense was picked up by Nick Gibson who chipped stand-in keeper Jono Ball to score and seal the victory for Richmond. Dave says he’s looking forward to next year to avenge their loss, and to try take the first division title. “We’ve got some young exciting players to come through, so we’ll look to do it all again next year.”

Clubs combine for summer soccer comp Football is hitting the city this summer. Nelson Bays Football is running a new summer soccer competition at Neale Park in association with Metro AFC, Nelson City AFC, and Nelson United AFC. The tournament commences on Tuesday November 9 at 6pm, and will run every Tuesday and Thursday depending on the weather. “I think it’ll just give a chance to give people who want to play football in the summer to do so in the city,” says Metro President Jonathan Jones. “There will be competitive competitions, and if families want to play, friends want to play, women, girls, then we’ll find competitions for them.” The tournament will be six-a-side, but squads can’t include more than ten players. The team entry fee is $150, and will run over 12 weeks with a break for Christmas. Registrations need to be in by October 22nd, and you can pick them up from Nelson Bays Football. A half century by number eight Peter Younghusband saved some rather red blushes for Stoke/Nayland in its top-of-the-table clash with Waimea Toi Toi United on Saturday. Stoke/Nayland, playing at home, were in all sorts of trouble at 40 for 6 until Peter and Darius Skeaping combined for an eight wicket stand approaching 80 runs. It lifted the home side to a total of 139. WTTU also had some batting woes,
finishing the day at 109 for 8, leaving the match evenly poised heading into the second day at the Marsden Recreation Ground this Saturday. Stoke/Nayland skipper Ryan Edwards says the combination of strong bowling and poor batting was the major reason 18 wickets fell on the first day of the two day match. “When we arrived we actually though the pitch looked pretty good and I still think there was nothing wrong with it, it
was just some decent bowling.” Stoke/Nayland and WTTU are both sitting on top of the Car Company two-day table and Ryan says gaining first innings points is a priority for his side. “They’re a good team so getting first innings is definitely our goal, wrap up the last two wickets and put on a decent total for them to chase.” The last day of the game starts at lunchtime this Saturday.

Nelson teams are masters of South Island football Nelson’s men’s and women’s football teams have both come home from the South Island masters games with gold. The annual games, which are coming to Nelson in 2011, feature a range of sports, but it was football that the Nelson contingent wanted to talk about, winning both competitions. The tournament didn’t start as planned for the Nelson men’s team, featuring players from the Richmond, Suburbs and Metro clubs, going down early in its first game. It scrapped into the semi finals with the unflattering record of one win and two draws after coming from behind in all but one of its pool matches. Nelson’s inability to start well continued to plauge them in the knockout stage, going down 2-0 before the halftime break.
They fought back though, scoring twice to send the match to extra time and eventually penalties, which they won 3-2. In the final, against Rollywood, from Rollaston, Nelson again went down early conseeding a goal within the first few minutes. But a composed fightback saw Nelson win the game 2-1 and along with it, the gold medal. The only blight, a broken ankle to Nathan Jeffree after a tackle in the final. The women’s side were far more dominate in claiming its gold medal, winning all seven games it played scoring an incredible 31 goals and conceding just one during the whole tournament. The women’s tournement is played in a seven-a-side format and the Nelson team played teams mainly from Timaru and Christchurch.

The Hester Shield was formerly a rival competition consisting of Nelson and Marlborough, but with the latter providing minimal athletes in the past seasons, the newly named Hester Shield Classic will now be open to competitors from all over the country. “Thats a big one. Basketballers topple big centres at nationals Nelson representative basketballers have continued the city’s strong showing in the sport, finishing extremely well at various national
tournaments last week. The Nelson under 15 and under 13 girls representative teams both finished in sixth position at their respec-
tive tournaments in Porirua and Christchurch. Both sides took some big scalps during the events with the under 15 side beating
Wellington, Harbour and the host sides, Porirua. The under 13 side swept past Auckland, New Plymouth and Waikato.
Motocross training camp up-skills 50 riders Motocross coach Dan Shallcrass says the school holiday camps he runs are the complete A to Z. “We don’t only teach how to ride properly and how to improve by explaining the basics to start, which is where you should begin in any sport, and proper techniques, but we teach all aspects of safety, machine care and maintenance and discuss right attitudes which affect
enjoyment and performance.” Dan stresses that motocross is a family affair and as with any recreation or activity, if the parents get involved with their kids everybody is going to enjoy the fun of the event with the benefit of social interaction with family and friends. The latest camp at 88 Valley attracted 50 riders over two days and Dan was pleased so many participants were part of family
groups. “We instruct at all levels according to individual stages of competence and development. There’s something for the absolute beginner and something for the pro rider at our camps,” says Dan. The next camp will be on October 31 and anyone wanting to register or wanting more information should phone or txt Dan on 027 277 6035.
