Gay men told to leave bar Andrew Board

A gay couple were kicked out of a Nelson nightclub on Saturday, told “this isn’t a gay bar” says an upset and angry friend of the couple. The two men, who wish to remain unnamed, were on the dance floor at Malbas Bar on Saturday night when a bouncer told them to leave. Their friend Letizia Beyer-Rieger says they were shocked when approached by the security staff. “We were having a dance, doing our own thing, then one of them kissed the other. As soon as that happened the bouncer came over, went nuts and said ‘sorry you’re not welcome here, you have to leave’. When we got to the door we asked why we were getting kicked

out and he told us “Malbas isn’t a gay bar, go find somewhere else”. General manager of the bar, Anja Nicholson, apologised for the incident on the bar’s Facebook page but was unable to be contacted on Monday. “I would like to extend my sincere apology to both people who were removed last night in this incident. And to all those who were offended by this,” she wrote. “When I heard of this, I was quick to talk to the bouncer involved and of course allowed the guy back in. The opinions and views of any of the staff are not in direct relation to the opinions and views of our establishment, please do not allow this to taint your opinion of Malbas

One of Nelson’s most popular music events ended on a high note on Saturday with thousands of people spread out on their picnic blankets for a night of entertainment. With a star studded line up of top musicians from around New Zealand – including Nelson’s own Trudi Wilson – Opera in the Park took over Trafalgar Park for the biennial event. Organisers are still collating ticket numbers but say the are close to 8000. “I’m really proud Nelson City Council delivered such a top class event and with such a large crowd we know that it continues to be a ‘must-see’ in Nelson’s events calendar.” says Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio. “Events like the opera showcase our vibrant city and help put Nelson on the map.” Jane Hilson says she and her children thoroughly enjoyed the show. “It’s a great family event, it’s an opportunity to get a bit of culture. It would be great if we could have it back every year.” Local man Adrian Secker says he too thought the event was great. “It’s magic. Glorious music, a lovely day, what’s not to like.”

“For a young family like mine it’s hard to come up with the deposit needed for Nelson’s price range.”

“I think it’s affordable if you have a good job and you’re good at saving. Kiwisaver should be explored too.”

Burnout comp will be back Sinead Ogilvie

While the future of the Nelson Car Show burnout competition may have reached a dead end at its venue next to the Speights Ale House, organisers say it won’t stop the event from going ahead. Resource consent for the site has now run out, but organiser Steve Steele says because of future development plans for the site, the venue had always been a short term solution. “The event will still go ahead, we’ll find somewhere. The venue was never a long term solution.” While Steve has a few ideas as to how to go about organising the event, he says it is a difficult process to find a suitable site because any spare land close to the city is probably earmarked for future development

too and he would like the event to have a more permanent home. One idea was to have portable custommade concrete slabs, so organisers could virtually take the Steve Steele. event anywhere, but Steve says that would be an expensive option. “When you are running an event off the smell of an oily rag you have to look at keeping the costs down.” Steve says he hopes that when the Tapawera Motorsport Park comes to fruition the event could be held there. “That is going to be great and will be a world class motor sport venue. In terms of cars versus population Nelson has the biggest number of

classic cars in the country, but at the moment we don’t have a facility to be able to enjoy them.” Steve says the burnout competition is about letting the motor sport community get out and have some fun in a safe environment, keeping them from doing the activity illegally on public roads. Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne says he “absolutely agrees” with Steve and says he would welcome the event saying the future Tapawera Motorsport Park would be perfect. Nelson city mayor Aldo Miccio says he would love to see the event stay in the city. “I’d most definitely want to see it stay, it’s a fantastic event that attracts many people. The key would be to find that balance, have it in an appropriate place while still keeping it near the city, close to amenities.”

Gay men told to leave bar FROM PAGE 1 itself. Please take my word that this matter will not be ignored.” Letizia says she has no malice against the bar’s manager. “She was great, the situation would have been a lot worse if she wasn’t there. But it’s not right and we were all pretty disgusted.” Jeanette Swift of Hospitality NZ says venues have a right to tell anyone they’re not allowed in their premises, except when it breaches the Human Rights Act.

Housing trust gets government grant crUiSY viSiT: Around 100 cruise ship passengers stepped into Nelson last week after the luxury German liner MV Europa came to town. The ship is one of two cruise ships to visit Nelson this summer – as first reported by Nelson Weekly back in September – with another one confirmed for next summer. Passengers visited Abel Tasman National park, the WOW Museum, the Suter Art Gallery and Hoglund Art Glass.

TASTE nElSon: After a 10 year hiatus Taste Nelson is back with a fresh and unique approach from all other festivals on offer. The focus is on celebrating what is great about our region with entertainment, wines, beers and our best cuisine. Prebooked tickets via Ticket Direct are only $10 each and family tickets are $25. Taste Nelson is on Saturday March 2 at Founders Heritage Park. moDEl A FinAliST: A Nelson student has been named one of seven New Zealanders with the most ‘specs appeal’ in a nationwide modelling competition. Holly Parkes, 22, was selected as a finalist in the Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year competition by judges after hundreds of bespectacled Kiwis uploaded their images on Specsavers’ Facebook page.

The Nelson Tasman Housing Trust was one of three housing trusts in the country to receive government funding to build affordable homes. Housing minister Nick Smith last week announced that grants of $3.11 million have been given to help build 26

new social housing units in Auckland, Nelson and Canterbury. “These are the first grants from the government’s new $104 million Social Housing Fund to assist families with acute housing needs,” he says. “It is part of a deliberate strategy to expand the community provision of

social housing to complement that provided by Housing New Zealand. These 26 units are targeted at people on low incomes and those with special needs.” The three trusts will also contribute $3.87 million of their own money, towards the projects.

New venue, same result for car show Nick Appelman’s custom ’54 Behemoth is hard to miss and for the second year running it has taken out the Nelson Car Show’s top prize. The Nelson man describes custom cars as “doing what the factory should have done with it.” “You come together with a plan, which I drew up in 1993 and it’s finally at the stage now. It rides as good as a new car,” he says. Bought as a four-door sedan in the 80s, Nick decided he wanted a convertible instead. Hundreds of hours later and he can drive something which draws a lot of attention. “During the final stages I was working 16 hours a week on it, and that was on top of my full-time job. I take it out every weekend. The front is covered in stone chips but it’s made to be driven, not to be hidden.” But while the result was the same, the venue was different for 2013 with the Nelson Car Show moving to the Tahuna Holiday Park after being based near the World of Wearable Art and Classic Car Museum. Steve Steele, who is on the or-

It was great,” he says.

Steve says the highlight was the calibre of prizes that were on offer, which included a 2000 Ford Falcon. Around 6000 people visited the event over the two days and there were 307 registered cars on show. The number of out-of-town visitors was also up for 2013.

Bob’s breakfast back in stock Phillip Rollo The British version of Marmite will be back on the shelves at English Bob’s Emporium this week, ending a 10-month breakfast war that saw Sanitarium demand the Richmond retailer stop selling any Weetabix or Ma’amite. Bob Wren had hoped to sell the English breakfast spread late last year but his 120 jars of Ma’amite never made it through customs because Sanitarium claimed that selling it in New Zealand would be a breach of a copyright. The Ma’amite was imported by Christchurch resident Rob Savage who had set aside a portion of his shipment to the Richmond retailer.

A date at the High Court in Christchurch between Rob and Sanitarium never eventuated with the two parties agreeing that the spread could be sold if the labels were covered up. The announcement came just days after Sanitarium confirmed its own Marmite will go back on sale in March after the Christchurch plant was forced to shut down because of earthquake damage suffered in September 2011. When contacted by the Nelson Weekly to get his reaction to the news he will finally be able to stock the Ma’amite, alongside the Weetabix he continued to sell, Bob reiterated his opinion that Sanitarium are bullies and that the English version was very different to what was produced by

“English” Bob Wren. Sanitarium. “What was the point in the first place? They’ve shot themselves in the foot and just looked a bit stupid,” he says. Last April, the Weekly reported that Sanitarium representatives walked into English Bob’s Emporium and demanded that all Weetabix and Ma’amite be taken off the shelf otherwise the company would take Bob to court. It also demanded the

phone numbers of every customer that bought the products. But Sanitarium never followed up its threats and he continued to stock both items until they were stopped at the port in Lyttleton. “I just got on with my business. I’m not relieved. I’m happy. But I wasn’t worried about it anyway. We’re not here to put them out of business, we’re here to sell English products to English people.” Bob says the local community had been really supportive during the 10-month ordeal. “They kept saying ‘stick to your guns’ and ‘good on you’. People I didn’t even know came in and said they had read about it. Since the first article you wrote that support has just carried on and on.”

School ‘houses’ rock Nayland

A day of colour and school spirit was topped with rousing chants on Nayland College’s back field last Friday, the second of its annual house days. Each of the schools 1150 pupils dressed in the colour of their house – named Phoenix, Aquila, Draco or Pegasus – and competed in a number of events including challenges in the pool, making bunting, making up chants and art. Deputy principal Richard Wilkins says the day was a huge success and students enjoyed getting

in the spirit, with Phoenix winning the day. “It was a fantastic day, a highly successful follow up to the inaugural house day last year. It’s good because it’s an opportunity for those vertical form classes to work together on a project and it’s a great opportunity for students who want to be leaders to work on those skills.” The day is the first of various house events throughout the year at Nayland, with an overall winner picked at the end of the year. The next big one is the school’s winter house day.

Cawthron aquaculture to expand

One of New Zealand’s largest seafood companies will soon become the newest addition to the Cawthron Aquaculture Park. Cawthron Institute and Aotearoa Fisheries Limited (AFL) have signed an agreement which will see AFL take over and expand Cawthron Institute’s commercial oyster nursery and spat growing operation at the Cawthron Aquaculture Park at Glenduan, north of Nelson. Cawthron Institute will continue to produce and supply oyster larvae to industry. “Cawthron Institute has developed a scientific selective breeding programme for oysters over the last ten years,” says Cawthron’s chairman Ian Kearney. “Three years ago we established the outdoor nursery to grow and supply increased volumes of selectively bred spat to the industry.” “It is now appropriate to allow our industry partners to take over this expanding spat production activity and for Cawthron Institute to focus its expertise on scientific research for the aquaculture industry.” The new agreement means that from March this year, both New Zealand’s largest pacific oyster (AFL) and greenshell mussel (SPATnz) hatchery operations will be based at the Cawthron Aquaculture Park. AFL owns New Zealand’s largest oyster export companies, Pacific Marine Farms and Kia Ora Seafoods. Its aquaculture general manager Don Collier says AFL has plans to significantly expand the existing facility. It has already employed additional staff to work at the Cawthron Aquaculture Park.

Postie and friends cycle for charity Andrew Board Nelson postie Chris Scott will this Friday line up for his 10th Coast to Post charity cycle ride, which has now raised more than $240,000 for the Child Cancer House in Christchurch. Chris will be joined on the 250km ride from Greymouth to Christchurch by his wife Sheila and friends Kevin Mead, Angee Edridge and Jacqui Douglas and says he’s excited to get back on the bike and raise some more cash for the charity. “Last year, being the 25th year of the ride, we had quite a group there to welcome us in Christchurch and ride the last few kilometres with us. That really hits home when you see those kids at the end, it shows you that it’s been worthwhile.” Chris says 25 riders have entered this year’s ride – including the five from Nelson – which is made up of NZ Post workers and their families. Last year the group raised $22,500, with $1400 of that coming from Chris and Sheila’s fundraising efforts. The group will take two days to cycle the majority of the journey with the last few kilometres cycled on the third day. Chris says he hopes the kids will be there to greet them again and the more cash they raise the better. “I must admit, we had a lot of people say to us that they had

Last week Nelson Weekly overheard several locals enjoying a coffee at the bottom of the steps asking each other why the bells were ringing at 11.40am. Tracy Alexander, who works at the coffee cart on upper Trafalgar St, says people often talk about them and why they are ringing. “It is a topic of conversation, people like them but just don’t get why they ring at random times.” So the Weekly contacted the Cathedral office where Raewyn Wiseman says the bells are rung before each service daily at 12.15pm and at 10am on Wednesday’s. On Sundays they are rung at

7.45am, 9.45 and at 4.45pm, or 15 minutes before each service. Raewyn says the bells are to call people to worship. “That is their main purpose but on Friday, for example, they will be rung between 2 and 3pm as we have a wedding and that is part of the package deal with couples, if they want the bells to ring as they come out of the church.” She says if people hear the bells ring at strange times throughout the day it could be because a visitor just wanted to have a go. “Sometimes people come in and they want to see the bells and have a few tolls,” she says. There are nine bells in the bell tower of the Cathedral, all were built by John Taylor Bellfounders Ltd in Loughborough, England in 1965 and then shipped to Nelson and hung by a local contractor.

Good yarns 'aren't for press' Each week photos from the Nelson Provincial Museum’s “glass plate” collection will run in Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly. Left: Master R Nairn. Nelson Provincial Museum, Isaacs & Clark Collection: 8209. Below: Mrs Macmanaway. Nelson Provincial Museum, F G Gibbs Collection: 323925. Can you tell us more about these photos? Email details to: history@ museumnp.org.nz.

Former patrons of the Prince Albert Hotel joined together for a beer and a chance to yarn about the good times at the 124 year old pub on Saturday, but everyone spoken to by Nelson Weekly joked that the stories “aren’t for the press”. Rose Round, who organised the reunion after missing the centenary, worked at the Prince Albert Hotel during the 1980s, and says the majority of people that turned up for the event were “punters” that used to drink there while the rest consisted of staff that worked under former owners Bob and June Walling. “Bob and June were great hosts and ran a very good pub and there was never any trouble. It was a great place to work and drink,” she says. Most of the pub-goers back in the day came from the Brook area and from the neighbouring Griffins factory. “I remember Thursday was pay day and so June would go play golf and come back and everything would just kick off. She’d say ‘Rosie turn the bloody music up!’ and we’d have Kenny Rogers cranked up on the stereo. They were really good days.” Bob Findlayson, who worked part-time at the

Prince Albert Hotel from 1978 to 1986 and then again in 1989, says it was a fantastic bar. “The people and the hospitality really made it and when we met up again today we’re still all great friends, which is the best thing about it.” Don Fowler, who was publican in 1974 to 1979, says June was a great cook and invited all of the regulars back for a Christmas party every year. “She put on lovely food because she was a bloody outstanding cook, she really was.” He says the Prince Albert Hotel was successful because all of the people in the area supported it. “You finished work, came here for a beer and went home.” The Prince Albert Hotel is now a backpackers with a bar, and its new owners Michael Walker and Naiane Denardin are hoping Nelson residents will mix with the tourists that come through the doors. “We looked all around the place but this ticked all of the boxes. It had a pub, it had a good community atmosphere, it had little bits of Nelson,” says Michael. “It always had accommodation but we’re trying to push getting the backpackers up and running.”

Mayor to woo call centres to Nelson Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio is trying to lure Australian call centres – and more jobs – to Nelson in a joint initiative with Hastings mayor Lawrence Yule. The mayors of both regions have been working with Wellington technology entrepreneur Rod Drury on his suggestion to design a package that will be used to attract technology call centres to be based regionally. The region’s mayors announced last week that, along with their economic development agencies, they will now work on a strategy to bundle together services and

promote these to Australian businesses, like finance and insurance companies, highlighting the advantages of locating high value contact centres in regional New Zealand. The aim is to create highly skilled jobs in some of New Zealand’s smaller centres says Aldo and Nelson is perfectly placed for that. “We know the Nelson region has so much to offer as a great base to live and work. We want to challenge the idea that all the work is in Auckland. We want to start a revolution and change the way people think

Tuesday February 12: Over 450 people took advantage of the offer of free breakfast when they took part in Nelson’s annual Go By Bike Day last week. Cyclists from all over the Nelson Tasman region called into their local cycle shop on their way to work for free food and spot prizes as a reward for getting out on their bikes. Tuesday February 5: The Tug of Peace fundraiser held in Nelson saw $1500 raised for the Nelson Regional Hospice Trust. online product experts becoming a stimulating career that is location independent. New Zealand staff are under 60 per cent of the cost of Australian equivalents. If we can package our regional towns as high value contact centres there is a fantastic opportunity to create modern regional jobs.” Aldo says the opportunity to bring more jobs to Nelson means the idea is worthwhile pursuing and isn’t about selling cheap Nelson labour. “This will be bringing more jobs and more money into Nelson and high-skilled, well-paying jobs as well. This is exciting for Nelson.”

Tuesday February 12: People affected by the forest gate key changes conducted by Action Forest Management now have another option for recreational riding. A Kaimanawa horse sanctuary in the Lee Valley has opened its forest solely for horse riders giving access to over 300 acres of property. The forest is available to use for all people with their own horse and features swimming holes, a musterers hut available for overnight stays, guided tours and will soon be home to a cross country course. The fee to use the sanctuary is $10 per day or $30 for a month. Contact Olivia for more information on 03 9700206 or 0211557876. Group hands out first grant o t S The Soroptimist International of Waimea group has found the recipient of its first education grant, a Nelson woman studying to be a counsellor. Sarah Baldwin says she is in the final year of her studies and says the grant will allow her to give up a part time job she worked to help her pay for her studies. “I’m so grateful and so humbled that I was actually picked. It’s really, really nice and validating that they thought I was worthy of it,” she says. The group launched the

grant at the end of last year and a story on it featured in a November issue of Nelson Weekly. Soroptimist Helen Bywater says 45 people applied for the grant, which was whittled down to the final six, who were all interviewed. “We were really impressed with the number of applicants we had and the quality but Sarah stood out and really fitted the bill for the kind of person we were looking to help.” Sarah says when she got the email confirming she was the successful applicant she

Nelson man Ted Knight says the photo published in last week's Nelson Weekly from the Nelson Provincial Museum's Glass Plate collection brought back memories of the car races at the "Sands", or Tahuna Beach. He wasn't sure exactly when they were but estimated they were in the 1950s or 60s. "It was fairly regular at that time, people used to come from down south and all around to have a go. It was quite a big deal. Quite a few locals had cars that went into it. “I can remember Halsey Logan racing there a few times, he had a garage opposite the Post Boy Hotel and the joker [Brian] Mabey was killed down

Stock prices pressure farmers

Phillip Rollo

The weather is fine but stock prices are dropping, says the president of Federated Farmers Nelson. Gavin O’Donnell says while the region has been blessed with sunshine throughout the summer months, the weather has only resulted in a “traditional” season for local farmers who are used to the fine spells at this time of the year. At the same time that the far north is experiencing extremely dry conditions, the most concerning factor across Nelson-Tasman has been a 30 per cent reduction in lamb prices after what was

a record high year in 2012, says Gavin. “The weather certainly hasn’t had the same impact as it has in the north of the North Island or in the East Coast regions,” he says. “The prices paid last year [for stock] were probably higher than they should have been so all the major meat processing companies made substantial losses.” Gavin labelled last season as “one of the best we ever had” because of good rainfall, good levels of feed and historically high stock prices. “There is quite a change this year. The indications are that some farmers might be struggling. Pressure will be on budgets, there is no doubt about it.”

The government is handing iPhones to more than 100 local police officers, with another half of them getting iPads as well. The new technology should save 22,935 hours of police time in the Tasman District each year, according to National MP Chris Auchinvole, who says the Government’s priority for this time is delivering better public services. “Making sure our police have the tools they need to spend more time on crime prevention, and less time on paperwork is vital Inspector Ross Lienert with one of the to achieving this,” he says. iPhones that all front line police officers From April, 115 police ofwill receive. Victory's mad hats

The children of Victory will have the opportunity to stamp their unique mark on the upcoming Little Day Out, with a mad hatters' workshop being held this weekend. The workshop will allow children to make their own “mad hat” to wear to the Little Day Out at Victory Square in early March. Joanna Clouston says the workshop will be great fun. “It’s good for kids to have participation and therefore ownership of the event.” The workshops are this Friday from 3 to 5pm at the Victory Community Joanna Clouston will be running a mad hatters' hat making Centre and again on Saturday from workshop this weekend. Group hands out first grant The Soroptimist International of Waimea group has found the recipient of its first education grant, a Nelson woman studying to be a counsellor.

Sarah Baldwin, left, with Helen Bywater. was elated. “I kind of wish I had taped it. I can’t think of another moment in my life where I’ve had that reaction. I’ve had other amazing things

happen, like the birth of my son, but that’s quite different. I was very elated. I saw the email when I got home and it was quite surreal, I was overwhelmed.” Helen says the Soroptimists will issue another grant next year and hope to carry it on, depending on funds. “I think this showed there is a need and all of the applicants were very worthy. What stood out was that they had all been on quite a journey and from our view point it was quite humbling.”

Museum photo recognised Nelson man Ted Knight says the photo published in last week's Nelson Weekly from the Nelson Provincial Museum's Glass Plate collection brought back memories of the car races at the "Sands", or Tahuna Beach.

Record figures for airport The good times keep flying in for Nelson airport with an all-time record number of passengers coming through for the month of January. Passenger numbers flying into Nelson was at an all-time high for the month, with 32,912 coming through its doors. The news comes just months after the airport won an award for best in the country. Airport CEO Kaye McNabb says it’s the second big month in a row with 36,000 passengers landing in Nelson in December. She says the increase is part of a wider trend, which is helped by airlines pushing cheap flights. “Airlines do a lot of work with advertising and grab-a-seat, those sorts of things to get people travelling by air. But we have a continuing flight increase

in actual passengers. While we have fewer flights, like when Origin were Kaye flying there McNabb. were more flights but smaller aircraft, now we are getting fewer flights but they take more people and the actual number of passengers that is landing is more.” The all-time high since records began in 1999 was in December 2011 when 37,872 passengers landed in Nelson. Kaye says it’s great news for everyone. “The airport has been very busy, great to see more people coming. It’s better for the economy, better for businesses, better for everything and I hope they’re all enjoying our lovely weather.”

Reaction to burn outs: the event was advertised for weeks, the people in the area that don't like this event could have planned to go maybe the beach or to council supporting consented places with fattening food that is bad for you. Fast food outlets like McDonald's who got consent to build and serve bad unhealthy food for our kids, but yet people complain of air smells a bit like rubber. (Via text). While I can see Steve Saul, aka Mr Sicko’s, point in this week’s issue about providing drivers with a burnout competition venue, I can’t tell you how relieved I was to read that the Nelson City Council has not renewed consent for this annual weekend I have come to dread. Here’s an example why: late last Saturday morning I biked along the Railway Reserve in Stoke enjoying the perfect day and tranquil beauty around me – even foraged a few apples – and thought again what a fantastic job the council has done in providing and maintaining the reserve. All that was ruined, however, as I came to Bledisloe Reserve near my home and heard the screaming of tyres, smelt the acrid stink of burning rubber and saw its grey haze settle over the reserve. How ludicrous to watch cyclists bike through this pollution for the next few hours. Once home, despite shutting all windows, that dreadful stench still seeped in and there was no escaping the screaming tyres or loud speaker voice that boomed out almost constantly. A crucial line of Mr Sicko’s praise of Christchurch City Council’s approach to

organised burnout competitions was that they were ‘done at a speedway’, not near an increasingly built-up residential area. Well done Nelson City Council. J Paviell, Annesbrook. Its one day a year, what's there to complain about? Get a grip. Nikole Berkett. Opera in the Park: Loved, loved, loved Opera in the Park. Great show. (Via text). It was fabulous. The venue is magic. the artists incredible, Wellington Orchestra supreme and the weather stunning. I loved it and so too did the friends with me. Mary Saxon. I had a BALL!!!!! xx Trudi Wilson. Awesome weather, primo music, the orchestra was amazing! I loved it, even the kids loved it. Up dancing or being mesmerised by the opera singers. I did hear the big screen was a bit lower than usual so people at the back could only see the top half of the screen. The Tava sisters were awesome only 12 and 13, they were talked about a lot around the crowd saying how much talent they have. I think we are very lucky to have such an event for the whole family at such an affordable price. Not to mention your allowed to take a cheeky bottle of wine in. Thanks Nelson City Council and organisers! My first time was wicked!

With Robyn Hollis

What a great start we have had to February weather wise…some rain, many lovely sunny days and pretty high temperatures so far. This all combines to keep our gardens blooming and producing at a rapid rate. I popped down to Christchurch over the weekend to have a “Nana fix” and catch up on proceedings family-wise. It was lovely and very hot – great for a stroll (I should amend that as Benjamin is now running everywhere…..!) in the beautiful Botanic Gardens and the ducks are now no longer just to be looked at and fed, they are also great fun to chase. The facilities provided in these gardens are just excellent for families with two large playgrounds and the super paddling pools. It was a really lovely morning. When I left we were down to three large tomatoes in a bowl as I had made soup and some spaghetti sauce from the lovely Capri tomatoes, so I thought I would be fairly safe to take off. Came home to three large bowls of tomatoes and 8-9 zucchinis….I had only been gone 48 hours. Guess what will be happening today. Last season I spoke about the Capri tomato seed that I had been given to me by Vince who grows tomatoes in the Wood area,

and I promised an update on the growing of this meaty, pink red tomato. It has been amazing! Strong plants, hardly an insect, no dieback or rust and heaps of fruit. The one plant that I had which had been grafted onto a stock to make it more resistant to pests and diseases has also been a real success with heaps of fruit and Tim from Nelmac in the tree. very healthy growth. that make your vegetables home. • Sow spinach where your beans were growing – it appreciates the nitrogen that legumes leave behind. • Plant rosemary in a corner of the vege patch as it deters white butterflies. They also do not like sage thyme or mint. I have a thriving rosemary bush near my broccoli and cabbage plants and so far I have hardly seen a white butterfly or any eggs but Derris Dust is always an alternative. • Large zucchinis can always go in the compost bin if you are really over run with them. Give away and preserve what you can – recipe next week…but the rest will benefit the soil next season. The photo this week is Tim from Nelmac really high up in our huge old Albizia julibrissin. The cicadas had done some major damage over the years to one large branch of this dear old tree and we did not want to have any chance of this damage setting up a rot in the rest of the trunk, so down it came. Tim and Robbie did an excellent job and also cut up the limb into firewood size pieces. The health of the tree overall is very good so that was great news, and the way they took out the limb has not detracted from the overall shape. It really does pay to get expert knowledge when cutting into old trees, this one is over 37 years old which is a good age for a silk tree so I am told. Hopefully we will have its shade and lovely blossoms, for a good many years yet. Keep watering, harvesting, and enjoying the best of the season in your garden and I hope you had a very happy Valentine’s Day. Thank goodness there was a rose still looking good on my Dublin Bay!! Till next time,

Robyn

Sirens after 'fresh meat' 3NZ stays Sinead Ogilvie

Sirens of Smash members Dave White 'Rudeboy Red' and Roxy Blackheart,'Roxy Smashhearts'. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie.

Nelson's own roller derby team is kicking off another season of play and is on the hunt for new players and helpers. The Sirens of Smash are issuing a call out for ‘fresh meat’ and offering a new training course that they say is a sure fire way to get new recruits ready for action. Team spokeswoman Tara Forde says Roller Derby is a fast growing New Zealand sport with over 20 clubs nationwide and after two years of operating as the only roller derby team in the region, it's time to get together another bunch of keen chicks and form a second team. Tara says the 32 week course is a great way for local women who have heard about roller derby and want to give it a go or simply want to try out a new sport. “It’s a really awesome way to get fit, learn to skate and have a great time doing a new sport amongst a new group of friends.” Tara encourages anybody to give it a go and says you don't have to be an expert skater to join the team. "A lot of the current members hadn't picked up their skates since they were kids before they started, it's easy to learn and heaps of fun." The team is also seeking other new members to join as referees and non-skating officials for the upcoming season. The beginners classes will start towards March 11 and will be held at the Tahunanui Skate Rink once a week, on a week night. Those interested in joining as a player, referee or as a non-skating official can head down to the rink to see what it's all about or email shamelessshenanigans@ gmail.com. For further information you can also view www. sirensofsmash.co.nz or check out the teams facebook page at www. facebook.com/Sirens.of.smash.

The 3NZ sticker will remain in Nelson for another year with Ian Burson finishing third place at the New Zealand Super Saloon Championship, although last year's podium placer Mark Carey finished well outside the top ten. Ian, who went into the final race on Saturday night at Woodford Glen Speedway with a top two finish out of his reach, finished between Christchurch duo Mark Osborne and Richie Taylor to complete a South Island trifecta. While the current South Island champion admits he was chasing 1NZ, he was pleased to finally reach the top three, especially after last year's performance at home when his race was ended by a puncture. "1NZ would have been great but any of those three numbers is a big achievement and to be third, well I'm just astounded really," he says. "To be third place behind those other two [is an impressive feat]. The plan was to get 1NZ in the South Island one way or another but to get 2NZ and 3NZ as well was extra special." Ian had a near perfect start to the event, finishing top of his heat courtesy of two first placings and a fourth. But he admits there were some problems with the car set-up on the second night. "We just missed the boat really with the set-up and we were chasing hard all night just to get third. Everyone had big expectations because we had run so well in Christchurch. We wanted the 1NZ but it just wasn't our weekend. The other guys beat us fair and square." Going into the final race, Ian knew he could only finish third at best. But when he crossed the finish line he knew he had done enough to seal the podium spot. His tactic throughout the race was to follow the driver sitting behind him on points. "Every car that he passed, I made sure I passed them too so we didn't have a car between us. I was pretty positive that I had done enough but we were in full flight so there was no time to think until I seen that chequered flag." Ian currently leads the ELF Super Cup which has two more rounds to go, and with the New Zealand Super Saloon Grand Prix also coming up, he is hoping to add some more silverware to the trophy cabinet.

Dog socialisation and fun play. Dog exercise and stimulation. An end to the frustrated barking / digging / destruction. Another way for your dog to act like a true canine and interact in a pack situation. An end to being a frustrated owner trying to find the time to take your ‘best friend’ out for a walk every day. Great for those who are struggling to walk their dog.

If this sounds like you then call (03) 542 3856 and talk to Steph or Leanne about booking your dog in for a fun filled day at Doggy Daycare.

Quilts & Quilting MECHANICAL FITTER

We currently have a role available for a mechanical fitter. Predominately working in the fuel industry you will need to have proven mechanical experience with an eye for detail. The role requires regular “out of town” travel and therefore you will need to be self-managing with the ability to manage subcontractors at times. Your approach to HSE must be exemplary and focused to provide quality work to our clients. While fuel experience is not essential it would be desirable, as skills from similar trades can be easily transferred into the cutting edge requirements of the fuel industry. Please forward your Letter of Introduction and CV to:
