Kids rip off elderly parents Sons and daughters are draining the bank accounts of their elderly parents, says Age Concern, with around 50 reported cases in Nelson this year. Age Concern came forward with its concerns around elder abuse in Nelson and Tasman after reading the new chief medical officer’s comments about the region’s ageing population in last week’s Nelson Weekly. Age Concern Nelson manager Sue Tilby says Dr Nick Baker is spot on to highlight the issue and they are disturbed and concerned about the increasing number of abuse cases they are working on. This year alone the organisation has 65 proven cases of abuse in Nelson and Tasman, 14 of those for self-neglect, the rest by carers ripping off older people. “We see a huge amount of financial abuse here in Nelson, a huge amount,” says Sue. “It mainly comes from family members, in

fact 77 per cent is from sons and daughters ripping off their parents.” She says others befriend older people with an ulterior motive to rip them off. She says it’s hard to get the money back and in two separate cases this year they’ve seen one woman befriend a lonely elderly lady only to have massive cheques written for her. Because the woman signed the cheque they can’t get the money back. Another case was a carer who was given an elderly woman’s credit card and pin number. She used it to withdraw $25,000 for herself. Because the woman supplied her with her pin number, no charges were laid and the bank refused to
It’s bombs away at Nayland Park Pool. After a summer without access to the dive well, the opening of the new season welcomed its return with hundreds of people pin dropping, bombing, flipping and diving back into the most popular pool. Last year the dive well had to be closed due to leaks. Pipes were replaced and “a lot of work was done over the winter” according to facility manager Dave Mckenzie. Dave admits it was frustrating having to close the pool over that period. “We lost some of our clientele. The dive pool is a big pool for the teenagers,” he says. “But it’s all they want to use now. For the teenagers it’s [popular because] they’re jumping in the air, doing the classic bombs and plenty of tricks.” Nayland Park Pool is open seven days a week on Nayland Rd, Stoke.

try to recover the money. She says sometimes they can press charges on the abusers, through police, if the victim will give them permission to investigate. Often they can’t. Other major issues are family members not putting elderly parents into homes because they don’t want them to spend their money, or stealing their money once they are in the homes. “People know the care is costly if they’re not entitled to a subsidy and they see it as their money, their right disappearing far too early and people don’t want their parents to spend their money. We’ve seen an older parent live in appalling basement conditions in a son and daughter’s house because they want to keep that person there because of the money side of it. It’s awful,” she says. “On the other side of the coin, one that pops
up quite frequently is we’ll get a call from a rest home saying that a person there has no money and then they find out that the family member managing their money has taken it.” Age Concern’s Jess Breeze says self-neglect is also a big issue and of the 14 cases this year she has seen some horrible living conditions. “There have been several really bad cases this year but one of the worst was coming across a client who had very advanced dementia and he wasn’t able to live in his home because there was no space to walk and there was rotting food and rodents and things. It was squalor.” She says the best way to help those people is for neighbours and family to report any concerns they may have. “We had quite a successful incident recently where a man was living alone in not the greatest environment but we had a neighbourhood that was really connected and I had several calls of concern from the neigh-
bours so it was good to know that his neighbours were looking out for him. If you see something that doesn’t look right, make a call. It’s better to be over-cautious than not say anything at all,” she says. Age Concern has just three staff with a fourth likely to join soon, as the workload continues to increase. Age Concern’s main role is to provide support, advice and advocacy information but it also provides education around elder abuse and organises a volunteer visitor service. Sue says she was thrilled to read Dr Nick Baker’s comments in the Weekly last week, where he stated the growing population of elderly in Nelson was a “major concern”. “We’ve done a bit of research around Nelson and we’re going to have a higher than average older person ratio in Nelson. Everyone’s scrambling and trying to keep on top of it but if we don’t act now it could turn into a huge crisis.”

Forget slow loading webpages or lagging online videos, if a group of tech savvy locals have their way Nelson will become the next “Gigatown” - with the fastest internet speed in the Southern Hemisphere. A national competition is set to determine which New Zealand town will become the first on this side of the globe to receive one-gigabyte per second broadband speeds – up to 100 times faster than most cities around the world. The competition, being coordinated and delivered by telecommunications company Chorus, will see towns all over the country battle it out to become Gigatown. And Nelson is already making its mark says David Brydon, who is spearheading the project. Along with other keen individuals, he’s already got the ball rolling and Nelson is currently ranked 15th in the competition which ends next year and is judged on community involvment via social media. “The title ‘Gigatown’ implies that you are a forward thinking technology hub and that is a major in terms of what it could do for

He says winning the competition will bring more interest from technology companies and attract larger investments to Nelson. “High speed broadband is a major drawcard. It will bring more businesses, including more small businesses to town. Nelson also has a huge number of contractors that work over the internet and service the world. I know a number of people who are working with people around the world.” Winning the competition would drive business and innovation in Nelson he says but it was also about the kudos that would come along with winning the title too.

Local game writer Edwin McRae who relies on the internet for his career says he is in constant contact with game developers both nationally and internationally and says he would love to see Nelson become a Gigatown. “If we did win it would certainly make life for a digital nomad like me much easier. The better the broadband the easier it is. Just having a high res skype conversation would be nice.” David and Edwin are urging anyone who is interested in helping Nelson become the next Gigatown to come along to a meeting at the Bridge St Collective next Thursday, November 21, at 5pm.

Blow out leads to scrap between two car shows Andrew Board Editor
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
A scrap has broken out between the committee of the Nelson Car Show and one of its former members, who is the organiser of the new Nelson Motor Show. Last week the committee of the Nelson Car Show issued a statement that they were in no way associated with the new show and claimed that its organiser Steve Steele stole their dates and location for the 2014 show, which will be its tenth. Steve was a committee member of the Nelson Car Show and helped organise it for a number of years. He and fellow committee member Rik Thomas left the committee in September and told the remaining committee members they were starting a new show. “[Mr Steele advised] us that he was starting a new event, using our previously confirmed venue and dates,” wrote the remaining car show commit-

Photo: Phillip Rollo. tee members, Karl Tompson, Justin Radford, Graeme and Wendy Blincoe. “This event… has been given a very similar name to the original Nelson Car Show, and Mr Steele continues to make statements implying that his event is a continuation of the Nelson Car Show. This is untrue. The Nelson Car Show is no longer in any way affiliated with Steve Steele or his recently formed event.” But Steve says he left because organisation of the Nelson Car Show Trust was shambolic and he didn’t want to be a part of it. He says the 2014 event was canned by the committee so
he left to start his own show. “They shut the show down and then they reopened it, in the meantime I’ve changed what I do and now I’m Nelson Motor Show. I went and got all the sponsors and kept the event going. The reason they shut down is because they were having in-house problems. “So I said I’m outta here, I’m not putting my name to that.” Steve says his new show is far from just cars and he already has planes, gyro-copters, boats and even a bus joining the hundreds of cars. He says the new show is registered with IRD and has already attracted a grant from

the Canterbury Community Trust. The Nelson Motor Show will be held on February 14-16 at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, dates and a location that Steve says he booked under his name, not Nelson Car Show. He says his move wasn’t disloyal and he worked hard for the Nelson Car Show, doing “most of the work” and the committee wanted to go in a different direction, “so I left them to it”. The Nelson Car Show committee says their tenth show will be held the weekend before the motor show at Tahuna beach and it will be free. “We find ourselves once again facing hurdles due to circumstances beyond our control. [But] the show will go on.” It will be reduced to a one day event and stripped back from many of the other attractions at this year’s Nelson Car Show. It says it will not accept any donations for the show because it doesn’t want to be the “target of rumours claiming monetary profit”.

Nelson musos Nott too far behind Lorde “Is Broods New Zealand’s next pop wonder?” – that’s the headline US website Billboard decided to throw on top of their interview with Nelson musos Georgia and Caleb Nott, who have attracted plenty of interest since releasing their debut single “Bridges” last month. The former Garin College students, who were members of The Peasants when they were at high school, were praised by Billboard – one of the world’s premier music magazines. Billboard’s contributing author Jason Lipshutz was, like many other journalists, quick to point out the ties Broods have with Lorde who currently tops the Billboard Hot 100 – the American music industry standard singles popularity chart. Georgia, 19, and Caleb, 21, have been working closely with Joel Little who produced Lorde’s debut album “Pure Heroine”, and of course, Broods and Lorde are young New Zealanders, so for international media it’s easy to draw comparisons. “The associations with Lorde are natural – and like ‘Royals,’ Broods’ ‘Bridges’ is a startling single that yearns to be heard again and again,” Billboard wrote. “‘Bridges’, the debut single by the brother-sister duo Broods, freezes the listener in his or her tracks from the opening second.” And even though Georgia told Billboard that “we have to build our own identity outside of Lorde and the rest of New Zealand music”, the early connection has no doubt boosted their exposure. “Bridges” has already been played more than 200,000 times since

Nelson’s own garden show continues to flourish with an incredibly busy event this year says Nelson Growables Garden Fair event manager Jo Reilly. The fair, now in it’s fifth year, attracted thousands of green thumbs who were keen to pick the brains of local gardeners and growers, who had plants, produce and flowers on display and up for sale. “We were very happy with how it worked out. It was really fabulous to see how many people were buying trees and plants, there was a relaxed atmoshpere and an educational, garden focus.” More than 80 stands representing local gardening products and services, gardening hardware and
accessories, alongside garden arts and crafts were perused by the crowds who also enjoyed workshops, demonstrations and interactive learning opportunities. Jo says the highlight of the event was seeing “trees grow legs” and leaving the event, with people keen to take something home to plant straight away. “The food growing revolution that we’ve been seeing over the past few years is very much continuing. The health benefits, the budget benefits are all there when you grow your own food. Even if you are only growing tomatoes and lettuce, you will notice the difference in the taste and the quality.”
being uploaded to the band’s Sound Cloud page last month and multiple YouTube channels are already posting the audio. Georgia has often been praised for her stunning vocals. At the time of winning National Smokefreerockquest, judge and NZ on Air repertoire executive Tania Dean said it was “totally different from any other New Zealand singer,” and labelled it “powerful, emotional and dynamic”. “She actually left me speechless.” Industrial Warehouse and office and retail New premium multi-storey Caleb played guitar in the band Huge range 49-51 Halifax Street, Nelson CBD Associated Office when they were known as The Industrial Warehouse and Associated Office 74 Road Industrial Park (Units 4&6) 74Quarantine Quarantine Road Industrial Park (Units 4&6) Peasants of Eden and came second in the 2010 edition of the Property type: Commercial offices and retail. Buxton toilet makeover takeover
Sinead Ogilvie
Plans for a new and improved Buxton Square toilet block have not been completely flushed down the loo, despite a takeover from the Nelson City Council says project coordinator Lee Woodman. A group of volunteers were still very much involved in the project over the weekend, despite the council taking back control to ensure the makeover is completed in time and is legally compliant. Nelmac, contracted by NCC, will carry out the remainder of the project as of this week. It was hoped to be a community run development. Les says while the group attracted many great volunteers it struggled to

“At the end of the day it will still receive a great makeover at a third of the price of what it could have cost.”

Wakapuaka finally gets cell reception It’s taken a while, but residents of Wakapuaka and Hira have finally come into reception and will now be able to send and receive phone calls and messages to their Vodafone cell phones. Despite being just ten minutes out of Nelson, the surrounding hilly terrain has meant residents have been unable to get reception to their cell phones – until last Tuesday. A 30 metre lattice tower installed in Hira will provide mobile coverage and wireless broadband for the first time to over 190 households in the area. Vodafone will also upgrade its site at Atawhai, improving coverage and capacity. Under the government’s five year Rural Broadband Initiative Hira was identified by Vodafone as needing a new tower to improve coverage and is just one of 54 new towers it will install in rural areas all over New Zealand. The tower will be of benefit not only to residents of Hira in terms of convenience, but in dealing with emergencies, transport logistics,

road safety and other circumstances previously hampered by limited coverage. Hira School Principal Kevin Ward says he’s pleased with the move and labels it as “all good progress in moving forward”. He says he wasn’t aware it had come “online” until his cell phone started ringing. “I thought ‘hang on, that doesn’t normally happen’.” He says having tradesmen and parents able to contact them at any time is a definite plus and the school was already connected to wireless broadband. A spokesperson for Vodafone says the new tower at Hira has been planned for quite some time and was part of their goal to achieve government community coverage targets. “Locals will be able to use it straight away but can also find out if coverage from the new tower at Hira extends to their address online or by calling.”

Burnt house was growing cannabis A house that burnt down in Stoke on Friday has since been found to have been housing a commercial cannabis growing operation. Police say they, along with the Fire Service, are still working to find the cause and the origin of the fire in Manson Ave but it was
through those investigations that they found the growing operation. “While attending the scene police discovered the house was set up as a commercial cannabis growing operation,” says detective senior sergeant Wayne McCoy. “A quantity of cannabis plants was
recovered and police have spoken to the tenant.” He says charges are likely. Wayne says no one was home when the fire broke out, but all bedrooms in the house were dedicated to the cannabis operation so it was doubtful anyone was actually
living in the house. He said indoor cannabis cultivation was becoming increasingly common in Nelson he estimated police were uncovering one indoor grow room a week. Police also took time to praise the quick actions of the fire service.
Life guards ready for another summer on Tahunanui beach
Ed Steenbergen of the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club outside the new premises in the Tahunanui Beach car park. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
“No one has ever drowned between the flags,” Ed Steenbergen simply says, just two weeks before he and 34 others will start patrolling Tahunanui Beach for summer. Ed, who was named Lifeguard of the Year at the 2013 South Island regional Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence earlier this year, is proud to say his club is in a good place right now. Volunteer numbers are at an all-time high and they’ve just acquired a new site at the beach which will include a first aid room, lunch room and space to put rescue equipment. The Nelson Surf Life Saving Club recently moved into the new premises across the Tahunanui Beach car park. The building was previously vacated by the police. “Ideally we’d like to be on that side of the car park,” he says, pointing at the beach. “But this is the closest to it.” Currently there are 35 volunteer
lifeguards with another six in training. The ages range from 14 to 45 and the reason for the strong numbers can be put down to the new nipper programme for children up to 13 years old. There are 60 kids involved in that programme. “We only had ten members four years ago.” Ten lifeguards have pagers that are linked to the police and can be on call at any time of the week. Ed says Tahunanui Beach “looks nice and safe” but there are still dangers, including water currents and wind. “Most of our rescues are of kite surfers who get blown or sucked out into Tasman Bay. It’s a reasonably safe place but you only need an inch of water to drown in so it doesn’t take much to create an emergency.” Injuries needing first aid, such as cut feet, is also a common occurrence, along with the odd-tsunami warning.

Locals upset about 1080 drop around Nelson Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

dropped out of a helicopter at a rate of two kilograms per hectare. While the bait is toxic to possums, it is also poisonous to other species such as predators to native birdlife like rats and stoats but also deer, wild pigs, dogs and goats – and it’s these that have locals put out. Due to the toxic nature of 1080, local deer and pig hunters, horse riders and dog walkers will be unable to access areas being baited under the operation. Claudia Manderson, a Brooklyn Valley resident and landowner, says she will be significantly put out by a dropping zone less than a kilometre away from her home and wishes it wasn’t going ahead. She says she believes the operation near her home is completely unnecessary. “I don’t see any point in going ahead with this operation. There are hardly any possums found here. The area could have been managed by increased ground control for this season, which would have spared

A 1080 aerial drop and ground operation around Nelson and Tasman hills has locals up in arms over their access to local forestry for hunting and walking. While sodium fluoroacetate – known in pesticide form as 1080 – is always a controversial issue, a current operation involving aerial application of bait across 22,600 hectares of Kahurangi National Park and adjacent forestry blocks has some local landowners and users of affected areas upset. The TBfree New Zealand programme, managed by the Animal Health Board, is doing aerial possum control operations in a bid to stop the spread of bovine tuberculosis (TB), a highly-infectious disease affecting farmed cattle and deer. TB has been found in possums, cattle and wild pigs in various areas bordering Kahurangi National Park, which is known as a major reservoir for the disease. Adjacent forestry blocks and areas from Upper Takaka and the Barron area across to the lower Flora Steam, Mt Campbell and upper Riwaka will all be affected. The operation will see cereal baits

Deerstalkers Association vice president Bill O'Leary says 1080 use should stop around Nelson. Photo: Sinead Ogilvie. us from the aerial drop. “ She believes the operation, being conducted ahead of the tourist season is a mistake. “How does it look when tourists pass signs with skeleton and crossbones while looking for a relaxing healthy holiday?” Nelson resident and Deerstalkers Association vice-president Bill O’Leary says he opposes the use of 1080 because it is an “indiscriminate killer” and he believes the current operation will take out a number of other species. “It takes out game animals such as deer and from a hunters point of view that is my
principal concern. We hunt all year round and we’ve got some real issues as far as deer goes. They are very susceptible and die a horrible death, in agony. “ He says another concern is the withholding period because dogs, when used for pig hunting, are extremely susceptible to 1080. “People who are pig hunters will find they cannot use the area for a long period of time.” Local pig hunter Gray Parkinson says he has more questions than answers when it comes to the dangers of 1080, but says he doesn’t see why they need to aerially bait areas. “There are other ways of controlling possums. You can’t take your dogs in because
if they kill a pig or eat a possum that’s been poisoned it will kill them.” He adds that there is no doubt other animals will suffer from the drop. “If it doesn’t kill other animals then it wouldn’t be working. All I know is I have been in places that have been 1080’d and it’s just quiet. There is no birdlife, no sound.” In contrast, one local organisation is pleased the drop is going ahead. Forest and Bird supports the use of the poison as the only way of protecting native birdlife from predators such as stoats and rats, says Nelson Tasman branch secretary Gillian Pollock. “Bird, lizard and insect life does come back in abundance after 1080 is used, it is noticeable after the following breeding season. Although some kea have eaten 1080 and died, overall their population also benefits because their eggs and chicks are ravaged by stoats, possums and rats. Where kea numbers are low it is because of these pests. All ground nesting birds are particularly vulnerable to pests.” Pre-baiting for the operation was completed at the start of the month and the remainder of the project will go ahead from last week to December 5. Recreational users of forestry will be alerted to 1080 drop zones and baited areas via signs at each entry way and in some cases, people will be stationed to inform the public.

Alcohol licensing changes hands The members of a new alcohol licensing committee have been confirmed with the new regional body to take control in a month. The Nelson City Council District Licensing Committee replaces the district licensing authority and will make decisions on applications for renewed liquor licenses and managers certificates. It will also consider more criteria when deciding whether to grant an application for special event licenses.
These include how the proposed event will impact the good order and amenity of an area, any local alcohol policy, and the design and layout of the area for the proposed event. The new committee is dominated by councillors or former councillors but will be chaired by retired district court judge E.O.K (Oke) Blaikie with councillor Ian Barker as his deputy. Other members are mayor Rachel Reese, deputy mayor Paul Matheson, councillor Kate Fulton
and “community members” and former councillors Derek Shaw and Gail Collingwood. The Sale and Supply of Liquor Act 2012 comes into full effect on 18 December and, under this Act, the DLC will be the decision making body for all liquor license applications. Rachel says members of the DLC are required under legislation to have experience relevant to alcohol licensing matters.
“There’s a very strong pool of community and decision-making experience in the appointments here and that’s important as the community can now have greater input into local alcohol issues under the new Act,” she says. The appoointments coincide with work to the Local Alcohol Policy which has been open for public consultation. The council is due to hear submissions before making any changes to the draft policy and adopting it.
Crowds welcome the Lord Nelson Nelsonians gave a warm welcome to the tall ship Lord Nelson as it entered the harbour for the first time over the weekend. Crowds of people lined Rocks Rd, Sunderland Memorial Pier and Wakefield Quay to watch as the ship made it’s way through the cut on Saturday afternoon. The ship was built in 1986 and is designed for able bodied and disabled crew. It is on its first visit to New Zealand. Welcome coordinator Milo Colden of the TS Talisman Sea Cadets, says the welcome was “an
amazing opportunity” to connect with our namesake. “Admiral Lord Nelson was a huge naval hero and was one of the greatest seamen and leaders of all time. We have streets named after his ships, the battles he fought in and the officers who served after him so it’s a big connection for this city.” The Lord Nelson will be berthing at Port Nelson’s coastal berth, but will not be able to hold an open day due to crew changes and work projects preparing for a voyage to South America.

Motorcycles ready for ‘dice run’ Police
report with Area Commander
Steve Greally
This week I want to let you know about the change that’s about to take place to the law in relation to anyone supplying alcohol to people under 18 years of age. At present it is an offence to buy alcohol for a minor, unless you are their parent or guardian or you supply the alcohol at a private gathering. New rules being introduced from 18 December will place more restrictions around who can legally supply alcohol to a minor and in what conditions. These new conditions are all about ensuring anyone who is supplying alcohol to a minor is doing so in a safe and responsible way. It means is that if you choose to supply your teenager with alcohol you will be required to supervise the consumption of that alcohol. “Responsible supply” of alcohol to teenagers includes ensuring food and non-alcoholic drinks are also available, making sure safe transport is provided and being responsible about the quantity and strength of the alcohol supplied. The intention of this law change is to ensure parents and guardians who supply alcohol to teenagers use a bit of common sense and continue to take responsibility for their welfare during and after the drinking taking place. All too often my staff deal with drunken teenagers and out of control parties where parents have bought alcohol for their kids then let them go off out with their mates. To be honest, it astonishes me how many parents regularly do this sort of thing and more often than not it ends in tears. With this law change, those parents or guardians will now have to step up and take full responsibility for their actions. Failure to do so could result in you being fined up to $2000. We all know teenagers aren’t great judges of what is safe or unsafe at the best of times. Add to that mix a belly full of alcohol and we create extremely vulnerable people. Their decision making will be compromised and they become easy targets for criminals. This law simply aims to keep kids safe by preventing offending and victimisation. I think it sends a pretty clear message to parents that they need to be a whole lot more responsible about what they’re allowing their kids to do. If not, they will be held to account.
All motorcyclists are being encouraged to get out for the Route 6 motorcycle club Dice Run. This Saturday, more than 100 motorcyclists are expected to take part in the mystery 160km round trip, which starts in Richmond and finishes at the Abbey. Participants can sign up for $15 from the Stables Richmond car park before 10:30am. From 11am sharp the riders will then head into Tasman stopping off at five pubs along the way, where they will get to roll the dice at each
stop. The rider with the highest total at the end of the day will get a cash prize and there are plenty of other spot prizes on offer too. Club captain Richard Eddington says the event, now in its third year, has been popular and all motorcyclists are welcomed. At each pub the publican will hand a bottle of spirits to the owner of his or her favourite motorcycle. All of the prizes will be dished out at the Abbey, where there will also be a free barbeque. The event will go ahead no matter the weather.

Fly fishing charity gets down to business The goal was simple: “To get kids fishing again”. And having seen the smiles on children’s faces as a result of hooking their first ever rainbow trout, trustees of the Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust believe it is working. Just four years ago the trustees were looking at “bare land”, says Richard Boyden. Now they fish alongside children at three functional fishing ponds filled with hundreds of rainbow trout, some up to 4kg in weight, adjacent to the Waimea River. The trust schedules kids fishing days where children between the ages of six and 16 are taught how to catch a trout. Volunteers, who have a background in fishing, are on hand with a net for those lucky enough to land one. Once the fish is caught, the child picks up a rock, smashes it on the fish’s head and takes it over to be weighed, cleaned and gutted. Richard is a member of the Nelson Trout Fishing Club and says young people just aren’t joining anymore.
Adam McDonald Ball, 13, with Richard Boyden of the Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust on Sunday. Photo: Phillip Rollo. “We need more kids off the street, off the computer and fishing,” he explains, helping out at the second to last kids fishing day of the year. When asked if it had exceeded expectations, Richard believed it had. “We’re all very pleased and very much hap-
py with the whole thing. Seeing the smiles on the parents, the photos taken, the kids are loving it and they want to come back.” The Sport Fishing for Youth Charitable Trust this year took out the supreme title at the Trustpower Nelson Tasman Community Awards.
Representatives for the trust will next year attend the national awards ceremony, but reflecting on the win, Richard says in some ways it has worked against the charity. “All the funding people they get lots of applications and they probably figure anyone with a supreme award will probably be right [without it]. So we’ve lost out on about half of it.” It costs $5000 to purchase 336 rainbow trout from the Canterbury Fish Hatchery, and Richard estimates another injection of fish will be needed come-February. Because of the huge costs, he says the mission for the trust is to get more funding, perhaps from a big corporate sponsor. “But we’re accomplishing what we want and that’s the main thing.” The next kids fishing day will be held on December 15 and anyone looking for their children to participate can book in at Fish & Game on Champion Rd. Richard says helpers, who need to have a passion in fishing, are also needed.

A great turnout to the Hampden St School gala on Friday evening has seen more than $20,000 raised. The annual event is incredibly successful each year says principal Don McLean, so it came as no suprise to see the huge crowd that came to support it this year. “The crowd would have been well into the thousands, we were really thrilled with the turnout.” While parents and supporters of Hampden St School turned out in full force, it wasn't unusual that a great number from other areas made the effort to support the event too. “That is really important to us. It is really good to see people from outside the community, share in our community.” Peter Gould of Stoke and his family attended because “it's a great way to help them raise money for their school”.

Stoke teen to design Hollywood films
NCC snaps up Anchor building on water front
out of school working full time at New World Stoke while also working full time on his entrance portfolio. He’s also been drawing pet portraits and doing some art commissions but he says unless he can raise the remaining $50,000, of which he has almost half, he won’t be able to accept the place in the school. “It’s the number one industrial design school in the world. My major will be entertainment design, designing things for movies and games so working alongside a movie director to design the movie. You get the script and then design everything from the character costumes to the environment, architecture, transport, props.” He says it’s as much of a science degree as an arts one. “There was one guy who was studying a train wreck in the snow so he had to know when the carriages fell off, how the oil would sit in the snow and how the tracks would bend under heat and pressure so there’s heaps more that goes into it.” If you’d like to donate towards Liam’s dream, you can donate online at givealittle.co.nz and search “Liam MacDonald” or email him at liammacd6@ gmail.com.
A Stoke teenager has become the first New Zealander to be accepted to the prestigious Art Centre College of Design in Los Angeles – a stepping stone to working on Hollywood movies. Liam MacDonald has been working towards entry to the school for the past four years after a chance encounter with the university’s then chair of entertainment design in Nelson. That meeting gave Liam a goal after first picking up a pencil as a four year old and hardly putting it down since. His love of drawing and art was then channelled into entertainment design, or designing the look of movies and video games. The course is extremely difficult to get into but Liam has already been to the school twice, once in the school’s summer school class, which gave him a taste of the work load. He says he’s thrilled to be accepted but the course costs $80,000 a year and despite $30,000 in scholarships, he’s still trying to raise enough money so he can get his US visa. Once he raises enough money for the first year, his Stoke teenager Liam MacDonald is hoping to travel to the US four year visa will be granted. next month to take up a scholarship. Nelson City Council has spent $1.4 million on land and buildings near Wakefield Quay as part of a plan to create “stronger linkages” from the city to the sea. The council last week announced the purchase of the Anchor Building and land as well as the land where the Custom House is. The Custom House building and business is owned independently. In August the council resolved to purchase the properties and agreed to pay $1 million and $460,000 respectively for the Anchor Building and land, and the Custom House land. It took possession of the Anchor Building and land on October 31 and anticipates taking possession in February of the Custom House land. The rating valuation for the Anchor Building and land was $611,000, though the independent valuation obtained by the council was $1.10 million. Rating valuation for the Custom House land was $270,000, though the independent valuation obtained by the council was $455,000. This land, combined with the council’s previous purchase of the former 4 Seasons and Reliance Engineering buildings and land, now create a significant land holding says the council.

Country Club to host shearing comp Dogs get put Andrew Board Editor down after candidate bite andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
The Nelson North Country Club is gearing up for one of its biggest nights of the year when it will host its sixth annual Speed Shear. The night starts with competitors across four divisions shearing sheep on a stage in the club, a fleece throwing competition and ends in a team’s competition that has as much to do with humour as it does competition. President of the Wakapuaka-based club, John Taylor, says it’s a great night for the community and says visitors from around the region are encouraged to come along and enjoy a great night. “It’s a good activity that suits this area but it’s also a chance for people in town who’ve never seen anything like this before to come in and have a look,” he says. “People that do come sit here and they’re glued to it. They really enjoy it and the more the merrier.” The Speed Shear is held to coincide with the Nelson A&P Show as some of the country’s top shearers are in town. Club member and former winner John Hawley says around 30 shearers will compete and it’s impressive to watch.
Nelson North Country Club members John Taylor, Dean Hawley, John Hawley and Mark Anderson are gearing up for the Speed Shear event at the club this Saturday night. Photo: Andrew Board. “We’ve had the top shearers in New Zealand here, they’re generally doing the show circuit so they’re pretty good, they can polish off a sheep in 24 seconds so it’s not bad is it?” The fastest shear of all time is just 14.6 seconds. All money collected via entry fees go back to the shearers as prizes but the club benefits from meal and drink sales. While the top local and visiting shearing are the top attraction the teams

event at the end of the night is often the most talked about. It involves a team of four, one of whom must be a woman and one a shearer, doing one task each. One has to shear, one wind an old fashioned shearing machine, one drink a beer and the other eat something that can’t be digested easily, like Weetbix or a cold pie. The Speed Shear is being held this Saturday at 7pm at the Nelson North Country Club in Wakapuaka.
Two dogs at the centre of a battle between their owners and Nelson City Council have been put down. Last week the council reached a settlement with the owners of three dogs involved in an attack on then-mayoral candidate Brian McGurk in September while he was door-knocking in Tahunanui. The owners of the dogs Paris, Honey Bee and Bella have taken responsibility for the actions of their dogs, says Nelson City Council, and voluntarily agreed to euthanize Paris and Bella. In return the council has dropped charges against owner Leah McQuillan as a result of this negotiated outcome. It has also waived the fees to impound and euthanize both animals. Honey Bee, which the investigation indicated did not pose a threat during the attack, was returned to her owner. The Dog Control Act 1996 requires the council to handle reported attacks through an investigative process, and negotiated settlements are possible as long as community safety is not risked. Information discovered during the investigation prompted an order to seize the dogs, which were impounded.

your questions
Q: Christmas is coming and I don’t want my children to miss out. Should I just buy everything using my store card and pay it off? A: Plan your Christmas so you can spoil the kids without spoiling the year paying off Christmas debt (at high interest!). Here are some suggestions: Have Christmas at the beach: A picnic, beach cricket and sandcastles will give the kids a day to remember. Plan activities and days out that are fun and free. Children will remember the fun they had and the time you spent with them– not the expensive gift. Create your owns gifts: make vouchers, grow pot-plants, make cards, sweets or biscuits. Find some other great ideas here- http:// familycrafts.about.com/od/giftstomake/tp/ HomeMadeGiftIdeas.htm Thoughtful or creative gifts are better than expensive ones. Don’t get manipulated by marketing hype. Give yourself permission to have the Christmas you can afford. Contact us for help planning your Christmas. We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Building saved by history ‘romantic’ An historic Nelson building has been saved by its owner who says he couldn’t live with himself if he were to pull it down as Nelson’s architecture has already gone from looking “important” to looking like a “toon town”. Robbert Steigenberger bought the former church manse, bikie headquarters, restaurant and health centre at 144 Collingwood St last year and says he found out pretty quick that he had to do something to stop it losing money. The ideal solution would be to pull the circa-1876 building down and build four town houses on the property but he refused to go down that route. “Economically it would have been better to pull this down but I’m probably too romantic for that, I couldn’t do it. I’ve seen so much pulled down in Nelson, it’s bloody awful and then they build crap in its place.” He says it’s a shame to see the old stone, concrete and brick facades of Trafalgar St go and he was determined that his building wouldn’t go the same way. “Trafalgar St looked important 100 years ago. It looks like a Toon Town now.” The former health centre was on the market for two years before Robbert bought it and he says in that time a number of health businesses that leased a room in the building had moved on. He held a meeting with the remaining tenants when he bought it to say it would continue as a health centre and he unsuccessfully tried to lure some of

the old tenants back from the newer purpose-built facilities that have popped up around town. He says he lost $45,000 in the first year and the second year was going the same way. “So I thought ‘no, we’ve got to do something’.” So Robbert is giving the building – which is across the road from the Nelson School of Music and in front of Marsden House Funeral Homes – enough work that he hopes will see it survive for another 137 years. “We’re stripping it back as much as possible, trying to save what we can. We’re spending $200,000 to do it right.” He says the building will go out for lease once the work is finished at the
end of the year and he’s hoping to secure a tenant as soon as he can. He’s also after some history of the building. “There are no records or plans at the council, nothing. We haven’t seen any photos, if anyone has any information we’d be really happy to hear it.” Robbert says he first entered the building in the 1980s when it was a restaurant named the Dead Priest. He fell in love with it that night and says he’s still in love and is thrilled to be able to restore it and own it. “I fell in love with the building, it’s never been to make money out of. I don’t like speculating with property,” he says. “But it has become a bigger job than I thought it would be.”

Nelson Airport has been helping people take off for 75 years – a huge milestone for a town that every year sees more people touch down at its airport every year than the region’s entire population. Nelson’s aviation history started with the landing of an Avro 504 in 1921 and has since seen the town flourish to become one of the busiest centres for scheduled flights in the country. To celebrate the significant anniversary, people are invited to a free community open day at the airport, Saturday November 30, between 10am and 4pm. Nelson has come a long way in aviation since that first plane landing, which was actually bound for Brightwater but ran short of fuel prompting a stop at Marsden paddock in Stoke. The town’s isolation by mountains and sea meant that travel by air was met with enthusiasm by the entire community and was grabbed with both hands by the Harbour Board, who spearheaded plans to bring a functioning commercial airfield to the region. to expand the area available for general aviation parking. “And the next development people should expect to see over the next 12 months is a complete revamp of the parking and traffic access to the airport, followed very closely by a terminal expansion.” The anniversary of Nelson Airport will be celebrated on Saturday November 30 with a free entry, open to the public event. Crowds well into the thousands are expected to gather at what Kaye describes as a true community airport. “We very much think of ourselves as a part of the community. We want to celebrate this milestone with everyone in the region.” The event will coincide with the launch of The Story of Nelson Aviation, a book co written by historian and ex Nelsonian Richard Waugh QSM and local aviation enthusiast Graeme McConnell. The Air Nelson hangar will be open with a full
day of entertainment lined up for the event. The open day will showcase the region's aviation history, there will be 22 different aircraft on display, including a number of classic aircraft. The RNZAF will attend including the Air Force band, TV weatherman Jim Hickey will be there as MC and to meet the public and there will be a flyover by classic fighters including Nanchangs and the only known Avro Anson still flying . Along with DC3 and helicopter rides available for purchase, there will be plenty of things to see and do for the whole family. “This is going to be a very big celebration of Nelson Airport for the people of Nelson. We invite everyone along to enjoy the day out and to help us celebrate the 75th anniversary.” Free parking is available if you follow parking officials on the day and the fun kicks off at 10am and wraps up at 4pm.

Nelson batsmen fail to fire in rep friendly The good news was watching a young 16 year old spinner take his first ever rep wicket for Nelson, the bad was watching the visitors from Canterbury Country take far too many of their own. Nelson failed to fire with the bat in its two day representative “friendly” at the Marsden Rec on Sunday. After losing the toss, Nelson had battled well in the field with Waimea Toi Toi United youngster Sam Field celebrating his first rep wicket and Nelson holding the visitors to just 243. The main star of the Nelson bowling effort was fast bowler Joe O'Connor who grabbed a five-for. Captain Ryan Edwards says he was impressed with the side's effort in the field. “I thought the bowling was outstanding, all the seamers and all the spinners bowled particularly well. We stuck to the plans, we never gave up, we didn't bowl loosely, we put the balls in the right areas. We had to be patient and wait for things to happen and we did that and I would have taken the total we bowled them out for.” He says it was a nice moment for Sam, taking his first rep wicket and he was thrilled with his work at the crease. “He was class, he was brilliant. As soon as we chucked him the ball he knew what field he wanted, there were no nerves. It was like he's played rep cricket for 15 years,” he says.

“You've probably got three spinners in front of the pecking order at the moment but it's nice to know that if we lose a spinner we have depth and we wouldn't think twice about playing Sammy.” After bowling the visitors out, Ryan says he was happy with how the game was progressing but then a horror hour struck, just before the end of the day's play. “We knew it was an important hour, we spoke about it but we weren't quite up to scratch with the bat.” He says to lose four wickets before the end of play was disappointing and that put Nelson on the back foot heading into the second day of play on Sunday. Nelson was bowled out for just 166 with Ricky Edwards top scoring with 45. Ryan says despite the loss it was good to get a game under their belts. “We don't play a lot of two day competitive cricket as a unit. I guess if you want to have a batting collapse you want to do it when there are no Hawke Cup points up for grabs. You never want to do it but the one shining light was that we didn't lose any Hawke Cup points. Hopefully we can address our issues and move forward.” The next competitive game for Nelson is against Buller in the Hawke Cup at Saxton Oval on January 11 and 12 before games against Marlborough and Canterbury Country.

Nelson's sea swim series open for another year The Port Nelson Summer Sea Swim series continues to ride a wave of popularity with a record 174 swimmers taking the plunge on the opening night of the series last Thursday. That's a big increase on the handful of swimmers that lined up in the series when it started 25 years ago and one of the organisers Dick Bennison says he's not surprised at the growth. Sea swimming is becoming increasingly popular all around the country and Dick says the Port Nelson series is no exception. "It started as a small group of triathletes getting together for a swim and when I joined up 15 years ago we only had about 30 swimmers. It's been growing steadily over the last three or four years and now we are up to 170 and we're still getting registrations coming in." Dick says there are a number of reasons for the popularity of sea swimming nationally including the fact that it is gaining a higher profile in the media and is the perfect low-impact sport for ageing athletes. The Port Nelson series has also benefited from the decisions to aim the series at swimmers of all abilities with a long and short course option and make it more user friendly by starting the swimmers in three waves to minimise the washing machine effect. "A lot of people were telling us that they found the starts intimidating and so we decided to start the races in three waves to make it a friendlier environment. Now people see it as a very achievable event." Dick says the Nelson Triathlon and Multisport Club which runs the series is also fortunate to have a good sponsor in Port Nelson and a harbour with benign sea condi-

tions. The harbour is also highly visible to the public which helps raise the profile of the series and attract new swimmers. However, the growth has presented the organisers with a number of challenges including getting enough safety boats to keep an eye on swimmers and volunteers to manage the registration and timing. Dick says the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club and Nelson Kayak Club have been doing a fantastic job of providing safety craft while a team of volunteers ensure starts and timing goes smoothly. "The safety plan is crucial to the swims and we take it very seriously. We have the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club's inflatable rescue boat manned by three crew and six kayakers from the kayak club as well as a trained on-shore resuscitator." For the record, Fraser Neill was the fastest male over the long course completing the 650 metres in 7 minutes 38 seconds with Amy Coulton the fastest female in 8min 28 sec. Although the teenagers set the pace last Thursday there is still a big contingent of super-fast masters with Kerry Mathison (9min 30sec) and Simon Kneebone (8min 18sec) the quickest of the 40-something swimmers. Ireland Steenbergen was the fastest swimmer over the short course finishing in 4min 46sec. Mandy Medcalf-Stephens was second in 4min 49sec. The series is held at the Nelson Yacht Club every Thursday at 6.15pm over the summer. There will also be the four-race Clements Endurance a long distance series starting on December 1.
Locals perform well at tennis open The Nelson Senior Open was played in Richmond over the weekend with the local players winning a fair share of the silverware. Nelson men's pair of Andre Van Rooyen and David Averill beat two Canterbury players to win the doubles title. In the men's singles final top Nelson player Kenta Naka fell to Christchurch's Jamie Poole but local player Melle Van Duijn won the men's singles plate convincingly 6-0, 6-1 over Oscar Symonds. In the women's draw, the singles final was won by Leanne Greep of the Tasman Tennis Club, beating Jacinta Morgan from Christchurch, 6-1, 6-2.

Fishing with
Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club The last couple of weeks have produced some stunning fishing days and the Saturday just gone was proof with a temperature in the mid 20’s. Because of the lovely warm weather and little rain, the water temperature has also shot up accordingly and is near enough to that magical snapper figure of 18 degrees. The first snapper will be starting to spawn and from now on they will tend to be a bit more tentative in their feeding habits. This will mean a slight change of tactics may be required to entice the snapper on the bite. Smaller baits will probably work in your favour on flasher rigs with smaller hooks when fishing on the rods. The setline will still be a good option as a backup using small squid baits. The snapper this season seem to be generally larger than last season averaging around the 35-45cm and are absolutely the perfect size for the dinner table. Although there have been reports of plenty of fish over 10kg and some closer to 15kg. These big fish can strike any time and you need to make sure your rod, reel, nylon and tackle are up for the challenge. Last weekend on our boat, we dropped the setline in 20 metres of water. We stray lined a pilchard from the back of the boat as we drifted away from the setline and landed a 6kg snapper within 5 minutes of fishing. Several other big fish
hit this same rig within 5 minutes of each other but dropped the bait after feeling the weight come on and that was it for the next 2 hours as the tide changed. Some smaller fish did come back on the bite and were landed on the rods. The carpet sharks are still in abundance, but so are the large schools of 2 kilo plus kahawai. Last week the large school of kahawai and associated birdlife that have been seen outside the cut by boaties over the last few weeks, came in close to Fifeshire Rock and Rocks Road. This activity saw land based anglers flocking down to get amongst the action. Heaps of kahawai were caught and it was great to see all the kids out their enjoying the occasion with the bigger kids as well. With all the kahawai around the kingfish will be following closely behind. The Boulder Bank and the spat farm must be due to go off very soon. Kenepuru has still been a bit patchy with a 10kg fish taken recently, but the 7 gillers are still there to make life a bit harder. The weather is predicted to be reasonably good during the week and into the following week, so get all the chores done asap. The fishing will only get better leading up to Christmas so get out there while you can. As always, come and see us at the Dawnbreakers Fishing club for all the latest news on what’s working and where the action is.

Tigers roar in opener A one, two finish has seen the Nelson Tigers cruise past the Canterbury Glen Eagles in a relatively tame superstock teams race on Saturday night. Shane Harwood took the checkered flag with usual blocker Blair Cunningham making the most of a rare running role to finish second place ahead of Canterbury’s Malcolm Ngatai. The race plan saw two drivers, Shane and Blair, drag the Canterbury drivers through the 12 laps while Dale Ewers and Jared Gray were given the blocking duties. Malcolm was the quickest driver out of the starting blocks, but was eventually mown down by the Tigers duo after just three laps. “It was pretty easy in the end. It all went to plan,” says team selector Wayne Martin. “The Christchurch car was winning but we knew if we just sat behind him that our blockers would sort him out. Shane and Blair then ran through after about the third lap.” Blair’s running role may have caught the Glen Eagles by surprise, as he’s generally a blocker. Wayne says that decision was made to compen-
sate for the heavy workload, with three races in three weeks, and to keep the opposition guessing. “Blair’s car is on the pace in his tank so we have no problems with them racing. We just pin your ears back and go.” While the win means Nelson holds onto the McCall Trophy for another year, Wayne says the focus now turns to Palmerston North for this weekend’s annual Challenge Cup clash with the Panthers. “It’ll get a bit tougher against Palmy. It’s good for us to get up there and race them before the Teams Champs later in the year. Especially if we’re taking [new driver] Ben Taylor up.” Ben was the unused driver on the weekend, and if even if stands down again on Saturday, Wayne says it will be a good experience for him travelling with the team and racing in the cash races. Last year Nelson lost the Challenge Cup to Palmerston North here at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway. Two of the drivers were put in the back of a St John ambulance, including Carey Harwood who has not returned to the track since.

The latest in combat fun has arrived in Nelson in time for summer. ProKarts in Tahuna has brought Pro Combat Laser Tag to its business in the hope of attracting fans of combat games that won't have to worry about the mess and bruises from paintball. Pro Combat Laser Tag owner Nick Fowler says he first came across the idea when trying to find ways to expand his business and laser tag fitted the bill because of its popularity overseas and because he can run it right next to his go-kart track. "I didn't want to do an indoor version. I wanted to be able to do something here at the ProKarts site. I saw a few outdoors ones and thought that could work and just started re-
Nick Fowler and Tom Griffin with the new laser tag guns that are now being used in Tahunanui. Photo: Andrew Board. searching it from there." The laser tag will be run on the council-owned reserve opposite the skating rink and will also be able to be used at school fairs and galas. "The good thing with laser tag
is that the ground doesn't get ripped up or anything, whereas with paintball you're spraying paint everywhere and making a mess." To find out more visit www. prokarts.co.nz

Entries needed for charity golf tournament After 29 years and $330,000, the region’s most successful charity golf tournament is ready to celebrate its 30th in style. The Nelson Host Lions South Pine Charity Golf Tournament is held over two days on November 23 and 24 and will see players play the first day at the Nelson Golf Club and the second at Greenacres Golf Course in Richmond. Each year the tournament attracts golfers from all over the region, including some of the very best and some of the very social. South Pine’s Jud Hadfield says the tournament is popular because of the great prizes, its uniqueness in
playing over two courses and that it’s a great community event. There are prizes for overall net (max 24 handicap) and then prizes for net, gross and stableford for overall, Grade A, Grade B and ladies. There is also a social prize and lots of novelty prizes. This year money raised from the tournament will be going to help renovate a cottage at the hospital that will be used by mothers whose babies need hospital care. To enter into the tournament or for more information call Jud on 547 9629 or 021 449 352. Payment can be made on the day and is $50 for the two days.

Waka Ama crews from around the country came to Kaiteriteri to take part in the two day Waka Te Tasman event, including two from Nelson and the host club, Motueka. The Maitahi club secured several first placings in various events and several third placings as well. The club's president, Peter Bywater, says it was a great weekend on the water and particularly good to test themselves against some of the best crews in the country and come out on top. If you missed out last time, get ready for a weekend of swinging and grooving with The Flaming Mudcats. The Auckland band are set to bring their special blend of blues and funk back to Nelson for what they “guarantee to be an exhilarating weekend of blues.” They will perform at the Boathouse in Nelson on Friday 22 November and The Mussel Inn in Onekaka, Golden Bay on Saturday 23 November. Bassist Sean McCarthy says they are excited to be back in Nelson. “There wasn’t much blues to be heard when I lived in Nelson a few years back in the mid 90s, but it’s great to see local bands like Boogie Train down here performing well and taking it to the people.” The Flaming Mudcats performed to an enthusiastic crowd at the 2011 Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival, and at The Playhouse in 2012. The band will be playing tunes from
their debut album ‘Gave You What You Wanted’, and will also perform new work from their upcoming album which is due for release early in 2014. After a whirlwind tour of the USA, where they played in Chicago and opened the inaugural ‘Field of Blues Festival’ in Rockford, Illinois, the band earned rave reviews with a recent write up on muzic.net.nz dubbing the band “up there with some of the late greats of 1950’s American Blues” and are selfdescribed as “equally at home in down-home shuffles, New Orleans funk, spacious minor blues, west coast swing, pounding four-onthe-floor and rollicking Texas shuffles”. The Flaming Mudcats are giving away four tickets to their show and have CDs up for grabs to readers of the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly. To be in the draw to win email sue@waimeaweekly.co.nz
