Locals take center stage The Nelson Winter Music Festival is in its last week with plenty of variety yet to come. Nelson School of Music manager Frances McElhinney says she is really pleased with the way the festival is going, in terms of ticket sales and the response to shows. “The Nelson Symphony Orchestra performance on Saturday night was the fifth show to reach sell out status, with solo violinist Jenny Banks wowing the audience with her mastery of the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto,” she says. “I really encourage people to become part of the buzz - there are still tickets to Michael Endres playing Schubert on our new Steinway on Thursday night, to the Saguaro Trio on Saturday afternoon and to Tic Tic, Paul Barrett’s funny but touching walk through his own experience with Tourette’s on Saturday night.” The Lizard Kings’ tribute to The Doors has sold out but will be back for two repeat concerts in September, and the Dave Dobbyn finale is also sold out. The Nelson Winter Music Festival runs until July 24, and has received sponsorship from the Nelson Events Marketing and Development Programme, funded by the Nelson City Council. The programme’s objective is to stimulate Nelson city’s economy in the shoulder and off-peak season by bringing visitors to Nelson for events.

Unwanted dogs are being dropped off at the SPCA. One of the reasons given is the “high cost” of keeping them. Do you find it expensive to own a pet?

“I don’t have any pets at home. Cost isn’t the issue. We’ve had cats in the past, but over them now.”
“I have two alpacas that we’ve spent a lot on. I’d spend more money one one of them because you benefit from it a lot more.”

NEWS IN BRIEF
Heartbreak for SPCA FROM PAGE 1
• New Zealand artist Terry Stringer has been chosen to design a sculpture for the Northern gateway to Nelson city. The 2009 Regional Arts Strategy and subsequent Nelson Arts Policy prioritised public art to mark important gateways, particularly along QEII Dr. It was agreed that a sculpture near the intersection of QEII Dr and Trafalgar St would heighten the sense of arrival to the city and link the city to the sea. The design, called “Dance to the music of time”, is a three faceted piece which will stand 5.5 metres tall. To see the artists impression visit our facebook page.
GETTING A TASTE FOR THE HOLIDAYS: Jared Clarke, 8, Lillyanne Perez, 10, Javid Hamilton, 8, and Jake Harper, 12, cooked their own lunch on the first day of the Awesome Atahwai Activities’ holiday programme. is trying to think outside the square to attract new owners because it has exhausted its current market. “I think everyone who wants a dog has got one so we have to start looking at other options.” Asked if euthanasia was an option Donna says she didn’t want to go down that track yet. “We will do all we can to avoid that, in my time here we have never put a dog down because of overcrowding and I wouldn’t want to start. We don’t want to go down the death row track just yet.” While the high cost of dog registrations is often given as a reason owners can’t afford to keep their pets, Donna says the biggest problem is unwanted puppies and she would rather see an incentive for owners to de-sex their dogs as opposed to cheaper registration fees. “If we can get dogs desexed that will go a long way to helping solve this heartbreaking problem we are facing right now.” • If you would like to adopt a puppy or dog, visit the SPCA or give them a call on 547 7171.

Nelsonians gladly left their umbrella’s and coats in the cupboard over the weekend as our best friend, the sun, came out to play. The city was filled with people cycling, walking, fishing, shopping and generally stretching their legs after several weekends of rain. Nelson man Les Asplet, above, says he headed down to the wharf for a spot of fishing. “It’s such a beautiful day and such beautiful scenery, why not come down here and take it all in.” Photo: Andrew Board.
Traffic group ‘confident’ ahead report With the report on what to do with the city’s heavy traffic due tomorrow, the lobby group aiming to “save the waterfront” says it is confident of a positive result. The arterial traffic study has been an 18 month process to look at the best options for traffic from the city to the Annesbrook Dr roundabout. It has been delayed several times but the final report by Nelson City Council and New Zealand Transport Authority will be announced tomorrow morning at 11.30am. It is expected the building of a new road, from St Vincent St through the railway reserve to the

Annesbrook Dr roundabout will be favoured but with little spare government funding available, will be put on hold for some years. Jeremy Matthews, of the Save the Waterfront group, says the decision is “critical” for the region and he hopes council will commit to building the highly controversial Southern Motorway. “That mile of coastline [Rocks Rd] is among the best in the world and we have trucks roaring through it all day. We need to take our waterfront back and allow people to use it.” News of the result will be posted on the Nelson Weekly facebook page as soon as it’s announced.

The smallest show in town The show may be the smallest around but it’s big on details, fun and drawing in a crowd. The Nelson Miniatures Club is hosting its fifth annual Dollshouses and Miniatures Exhibition at the Stoke Memorial Hall this weekend and show convenor Jeanette Dungan says it will be a blast. The exhibition will feature dozens of locally made items and workshops, where people young and old can have a go at making miniatures. The exhibition is open from 10am to 4pm on
Saturday and Sunday with a small entry fee. “It can be an inexpensive hobby, using items normally thrown away, such as bottle-tops and small containers, or it can be very expensive if you buy miniature items made by master craftsmen.” Members from the Garden City Miniatures Club in Christchurch and the Lower Hutt Miniatures Club are also bringing items to display. Again, there will be raffles — a full-sized table lamp with a miniature scene inside, and other special items. Natureland ‘has a future’ as a part of Nelson For 20 years Gail Sutton has ridden the Natureland rollercoaster and despite a close call in 2008 and the current troubles facing its owner, says she is surer than ever that the zoo has a future in the city. “In the time I’ve been here we’ve been through three or four different times when we’ve basically been on skid row. It’s always been tough here, always run on a very tight budget. But we are still here and still moving forward and developing,” she says. Gail started working at Natureland as a volunteer in 1981 and three years later joined the staff as a paid member. She now holds the post of manager and says while the industry has become a tough one to operate in recent years, the future looks a lot brighter than several years ago. In 2008 it was announced that Natureland, at the Tahunanui Beach reserve since the 1960’s, was to close. Declining visitors meant there was not enough money to continue running the park. But a last minute reprieve from the Orana Wildlife Trust, which manages Christchurch’s largest zoo Orana Park, saved Natureland. However, just as the ink was drying on expansion and development plans for the Nelson zoo the Christchurch earthquake struck, slashing visitor numbers at Orana Park. It has been recently forced to cut some of its staff and told Natureland it will not be able to cover any losses, like it did last year. “We can’t make a loss this year or we will be right back in the firing line,” says Gail. Despite this, the park continues to operate well and is still attracting thousands of visitors each year. Natureland currently has around 500 animals and has expanded its core business to include an educator who takes programmes to lo-

It also works with the Department of Conservation on rescue and release programmes and provides work experience and practical skills for distance students. Gail says the zoo is run on community spirit. “There is definitely a big future at Natureland, it is a big part of Nelson and it can offer so much. We have a band of volunteers that want to come in and we get great support from the community. Our food bill for the animals is about $20,000
a year and we are really grateful to all the Nelsonians who drop in their excess spray-free vegetables and other big organisations like Countdown, which gives us three pick ups a week and that fills out little chiller each week with fresh fruit and vegetables and keeps that cost down.” And with the majority of its 30,000 annual visitors coming from Nelson, Gail says she is hoping locals continue to get out and support the zoo and make sure it sticks around for some time yet.

diary
• Four Container ships, seven large fishing vessel movements and several small ones, the cement ship arrived twice due to a schedule disrupted by weather; the Purse Seiner Cape Breton went for sea trials after a successful major refit. • Another purpose built fruit carrier left with kiwifruit, two large logs ships were loaded and departed, another supply vessel came in to port for crew change, a seismic survey vessel came for crew change and fuel, another large fishing vessel Western Pacific has arrived for ongoing maintenance. • Congratulations to the marine team and stevedores that were able to work many vessels despite the weather conditions. • It was the weather in other parts of the country that highlighted the advantage of the Tasman Bay for sheltered conditions. At the height of the recent storms 15 vessels were in the bay including a large drill ship. Many took the opportunity to change crews and resupply whilst here. • Last night whilst piloting I observed some waka people out after dark without lights. Guys and girls you become a danger to shipping and yourselves when you can’t be seen. It is an offence to be out 30 minutes before sunset without proper lighting. If in doubt – don’t go out Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.
Looking for great neighbours in Victory and Tahunanui By entries alone, it would seem Stoke and Nelson city are the two places you’d find the region’s best neighbours. Organiser of the Good Neighbour Awards, Kim MacDonald hopes a flood of entries from Victory and Tahunanui will change that. “I know there are great neighbours all over Nelson but for some reason people in Victory and Tahunanui aren’t telling us their stories.” Entries for the Good Neighbour Awards close at the end of the
month. The awards recognise neighbours who have gone out of their way to help, welcome, assist or just be a friendly face to their neighbour. If you have a great neighbour and would like to nominate them for an award send your entry to nsupport@xtra. co.nz or post your entry to Neighbourhood Support, PO Box 2101, Stoke, Nelson 7041. Include their name and address and why they are a good neighbour. If you have any photos please attach them to the e-mail.
Ford fans set to roar for founder’s birthday Like any good rural New Zealand lad, Colin Tippett grew up owning, driving and sometimes even crashing a variety of cars we now call classics. In 2007 he was browsing the internet and stumbled across a 1955 Mark1 Zephyr for sale in Marlborough, a car that brought back found memories of his childhood. It had been sitting in a shed, unused for several years. That’s until, to his wife’s disgust, Colin bought the car. It’s now a highlight on his Sunday, driving the classic. If you, like Colin, love your Ford, then you are encourage to join the Nelson Classic Ford Club for it’s fun day at Rabbit Island on July 31 to celebrate Henry Ford’s birthday. Sick Nelsonians fill hospital earlier than normal Chief medical officer Dr Heather McPherson says people in Nelson need to see their GP before illness gets so severe it requires a hospital visit. Beggs has been bringing music to Nelson for nearly 110 years. The men at Beggs of course are not 110 years old but do have more than 110 years of combined musical experience between them. That means that when you come into Beggs MusicWorks you will get great advice based on real world experience from guys who have been there and done that. Whether you are looking for your first instrument to get started or you are an experienced player, the men at Beggs can help you find the right instrument for the job. You may have seen Neville on the bass, Phil on the guitar and Warren playing the drums around the bars of Nelson. As part of the MusicWorks group, the combined buying power of 33 stores NZ wide means you get the best deals on the world’s best brands. If it is Hifi or Home Theatre you are after Beggs brings world leading brands like Yamaha, Denon, NAD, Loewe, Energy, Mirage and Dynaudio to Nelson. So come in and see the free gifts on offer from Yamaha this month, and the men at Beggs, Neville, Phil, Warren and Tim not really men at work –more like men at play.
For a generation Don Harris has worked his magic, repairing shoes and boots for Nelson folk and making plenty of friends along the way. Don has been making and fixing footwear for 50 years and along with his son Scott, operates Topz Shoe Repairs at the Trafalgar St entrance to Wakatu car park at 5 Wakatu Lane. He has seen thousands of shoes and says getting shoes or boots repaired sooner rather than later can give owners another season out of them. “You can save a lot of money by repairing or altering footwear to get more wear out of them, before you throw them away come and talk to us,” Don says. But Don and Scott’s skills aren’t confined to just shoes, they also repair zips and handbags, straps and sandals, missing heel covers, broken straps or buckles, boots that are a bit too tight (or too loose), soles worn or starting to separate and stitching that has come apart. In fact there isn’t much Don and Scott can’t fix. So don’t throw those expensive shoes or boots away, save money, make your shoes more comfortable and last longer by popping in and seeing Don, Nelson’s friendly shoe repairer.
They may want you to “show ‘em your crack” but be assured the good blokes at Novus are all business. In fact if it moves and has glass, they can fix it. Novus Auto Glass is locally owned and operated by Francis Lagrutta and he heads up a hard working team with more than 50 years in the auto glazing industry. That team now includes three newer members, Ben, Gary and Rhys. Ben is a marine industry specialist, he joined Novus this year and as a builder by trade, specialises in flat glass. Gary repairs and replaces windscreens in the Motueka area, and Rhys has 14 years experience in the trucking industry and understands how important a clean, clear windscreen is to driver safety. Novus is a 24 hour service and they can fix that chip in your windscreen, remove graffiti on glass so the whole sheet doesn’t need replacing and can fit a new windscreen if needed. Integrity and honesty are their values say Francis. They are customer focused, reliable, trustworthy, efficient, take pride in their work and have a great reputation. They will treat your pride and joy like it’s their own. No job too big or small. If you have any queries or just want some advice, drop into 84 Vanguard St or give them a call on 539 4170. Rival slows College’s hopes of netball promotion IN BRIEF ATHLETICS: Nelson racewalker Nyle Sunderland has claimed in third gold medal at the world masters track and field championships in Sacramento. Nyle added first place in the 20km roadrace to her golds in 5000m and 10km events in the women’s 40-years division. NETBALL: Nelson is hosting the New Zealand under-19 and under-21 age-group championships, which will see some of the best young players in the country battle for national honours. Zoe Walker will captain the under-19 side which features Nelson College for Girls’ Shevaun Collier, Rebecca Reidie, Ruth Swaney, Stoke’s Emily Stalker and Michaela Matenga of Nayland College, from the Nelson area. FOOTBALL: Defending champions Nayland College were defeated 3-1 in the grand final of the Southern Skies football tournament in Brisbane during the week. Nayland striker Gagame Feni will miss a trial with ASB Premiership side Waitakere United this week due to injury. ATHLETICS: Alex Jordan charged through to fifth place in stormy conditions of the senior men 400m at the KBC Night of Athletics in Heusden, Belgium over the weekend. Alex completed the race in 47.53 seconds, despite a heavy head wind on the home straight. RUGBY: Taylor’s Wanderers are the division two rugby champions after a come-from-behind win over Murchison at Brightwater on Saturday. Wanderers won the game 16-12 after beating defending champions Marist the week before.

Competition was keen at Saxton Courts on Saturday with the final round of the second round being played. As teams are regraded at the end of each complete round it was the final opportunity for teams to push for promotion. Competing in Senior 4, Nelson College for Girls 10A were pushing for promotion after playing some enterprising netball over the previous four rounds. As Nelson was without three of their starting line up in their match up against Rival Jade, coach Ani Waitai was forced to experiment with different combinations particularly in the defensive third. Shooter, Courtney Robinson was missed in the offensive circle however she could be more than happy with her performance with the GK bib on. Tyla Rangi was totally out of her comfort zone when she was asked to forfeit her wing attack bib for the unaccustomed position of goal defence, however she handled it with aplomb. Tyla gained several deflections and was a handy rebounder. Nelson led for the majority of the first half, however Rival pegged back the lead and went on to overtake the college team. Nelson came back, however a few unforced errors proved to be costly and they could not bridge the gap to claim the win. Nelson worked hard to create the turnover however they were not always successful in converting it. Although disappointed with the 23 – 26 loss, Nelson is still able to gain promotion to Grade 3 as Garin Senior A defeated Richmond Sleepers 39 – 33. Nelson College along with their Waimea College, Garin and Nayland College will travel to Christchurch to compete in the South Island Junior Tournament from Monday through to Wednesday. In the Grade 1 top of table clash Wanderers Taylors A proved to have too much in reserve as they accounted for Rival Cougars 36 – 24 as so gain promotion to Premier Grade.

Nelson ‘keeper lines up another World Cup Coey Turipa’s Junior All Whites’ selection may have come as a “huge shock” but the former Nelson Suburbs goalkeeper will be out to prove coach Chris Milicich has made the right choice when the FIFA Under-20 World Cup rolls along in two weeks. The shot-stopper was a notable addition to the recently named New Zealand squad for the World Cup in Colombia on July 29, after missing out on selection for the qualifying stages. “I couldn’t believe I had made the squad at the start. It was a shock call, but it’s a great opportunity,” says Coey. With James McPeake struck down with injury, Coey and Young All Whites’ standout Scott Basalaj have been included, and will compete with incumbent Stefan Marinovic for the starting gloves. Coey is currently on the books of Brisbane Wolves FC.

Young Garin footballer off to score US scholarship Phillip Rollo It’s called the land of opportunity, and Garin College footballer Erik Panzer is hoping to grab every opportunity the United States holds when he jets off for college trials this week. The 18 year-old Nelson Suburbs midfielder will be taking a three-game break from his Robbie’s Premier League duties as he chases a scholarship with training camps at NCAA division one colleges Temple University in Philadelphia and Northwestern University in Chicago. With his final year at Garin College close to concluding, the school’s captain of sport says combining academic studies partnered with football development makes the US college system the most appealing option. “If I get injured and can’t play football again in my life I need something to fall back on,” says Erik. “I think it’s just going to be the best opportunity for me to increase my football skills and develop myself as a better footballer. There are better opportunities over there than staying here in New Zealand.” But Erik admits it’s a “complete unknown” without any knowledge on the standard of football at both colleges. “I’ll just play my heart out for eight days and if they like me, they like me.” Erik is the first Garin College player to make the

Erik has also made the odd appearance for the Garin College first XV rugby team in the past, but a busier football schedule has seen the headgear remain in the cupboard for 2011. But over the summer, Erik captains the first XI cricket team and is a member of the Senior A volleyball team. He also coaches the year nine boys football team, who have been promoted in to the 14th grade first division midway through the season. Erik is also targeting a Canterbury United ASB Youth League spot for the summer, after hopefully securing a scholarship for next August. “Hopefully Slotsy will offer me that chance this year. It’s been a goal of mine and this year there’s not many under 19 year-olds that are starting every week in Mainland football.” With Nelson Suburbs sitting in second place, Erik is hoping they continue to push league leaders Ferrymead Bays to set up a potential “grand final” final round fixture.

Tennis Scholarship takes young player overseas Breanne Johnson, one of Nelson’s top junior tennis players is heading overseas, thanks to a Tennis Scholarship. On 19 August, Breanne heads to Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, a long way from her home in Richmond. A former pupil of Waimea College, Breanne finished Year 13 at the end of 2010 and has been coaching tennis in Nelson and Marlborough since. During her tennis career she has represented both the Nelson Junior and Senior Tennis teams.
With an initial contract for one year, Breanne says she hopes this will be extended to four and says she is feeling really excited. Nelson Bays Tennis Development Officer, Lynnie Nevin says Breanne’s scholarship is exciting for tennis in Nelson. “There are a number of juniors in the next couple of years that will be looking at following in Breanne’s footsteps in applying for scholarships to the USA College system.” While Breanne may have been awarded a Tennis Scholarship,
it will not be all tennis while she’s away; she has some serious studies ahead of her on criminal justice, her chosen subject at University. “I’ve always been interested in the police and I think this will be a great opportunity to study law while overseas.” Breanne is the first Nelson junior to head to the States on a Scholarship since Siobhan Cavan, who left Nelson for Auckland as a teenager and is now in her 4th year at the University of Oregan.

TUESDAY 19 July 2011
Shawn’s back and begging for more After a year in the rugby wilderness, Shawn Begg made his anticipated provincial rugby return on Saturday night with 16 minutes off the bench, and now he’s begging for more game-time as the Tasman Makos take on North Harbour in Albany tonight. The Stoke captain nearly sparked a late comeback in the side’s 19-9 opening round loss to Northland in Whangarei, although when his pass off the back of the ruck found Jonathan Poff, he was skillfully held up over the line by Rene Ranger and Bryce Heem. But the 25 year-old halfback says “it’s good” to be back, and with a quick turn around - 13 games condensed in to eight demanding weeks - he knows his opportunities will arise this season. “It’s going to be a really compact season so they’ll try to keep everyone as fresh as possible without making too much changes that it’s a problem,” says Shawn. Shawn was one of a number of second half substitutions as coach Kieran Keane rung the changes with one eye on the North Harbour clash. Shawn made six appearances for the country’s newest franchise in 2009 before missing out on selection the following year with the coaches instead favouring Waimea Old Boys halfback Kaide Whiting. “It’s always a great honour to represent your region and your team mates and your family and everyone in the Tasman region. But after being there in 2009 but not 2010 it was a bit of a bummer. But what knocks you back
makes you stronger and it made me hungrier for this year.” Last year’s omission also gave Shawn plenty of time to complete his building his apprenticeship, with that under his belt it meant he could now focus fully on building a professional rugby career. Some strong performances from the always-competitive halfback for Accessman Stoke, gave him the nod as the replacement halfback for the Tasman Makos behind Crusaders wider training squad member Steve Alfed. But it was a hard and demanding road. Shawn wasn’t going to Tasman trainings due to a knee injury, but he still fronted up to lead an injury depleted Stoke side that struggled to find 15 players fit to play on some occassions. “I didn’t have any indication, but I thought I was pretty happy with my club performance and in the trial games I thought I played pretty good. But you never know. It was definitely a relief and I’m happy to be back representing the region.” As for his team’s performance in the opening round loss of the championship division in the ITM Cup, Shawn admits the team struggled to gel after only linking up three weeks ago. The side created opportunities, dominating possession and territory, but basic errors cost them dearly. Shawn says they had targeted the Northland clash as a must win. “We always want to start off with a good start, but things just didn’t go our way. We’re probably short of a gallop. We learnt a lot, and we’ll be better

Photo: Phillip Rollo. for it on Tuesday.” Without a team of superstars, there is plenty of competition for spaces, and with the format shortened in a Rugby World Cup year, Shawn is confident he can add to his now seven caps for his hometown. “I just want as much game time as I can get and just try to learn as much as I can off KK and Leon MacDonald.” Shawn plays to stamp his mark in 2011, to
make sure he becomes a regular, not only in the squad, but on the starting sheet. “I want to show everybody that I can perform at this level. Ever since I was little I wanted to be a professional rugby player. It’d be awesome to play Super 15, but that’s a long long way away for me. If I can have a good year here, then maybe I can make it next year. Who knows? But you’re always striving to be a better player.”
Stoke women head in to playoffs, while Reds take on league leaders The Accessman Stoke Women’s rugby team will host Wakatu Marist at Ngawhatu this Saturday in the championship’s semi-final, after finishing the round robin on top. Stoke are the team to beat this year and will be hoping to
see past Marist on route to a possible final with Stables Waimea Old Boys. The match kicks off at 1:15pm. The Super Liquour Stoke Reds remain firmly in the hunt for a home playoff as they face league leaders Waimea Old
Boys as the third division returns to the pitch this weekend. Stoke currently sit third place on 28 points, three shy of Marist. Waimea Old Boys lead the table with 42 points. The match kicks off at Jubilee Park at 2:30pm.
