As the afterglow of the Rugby World Cup eases nation-wide, Nelson leaders say the city is now starting to count the benefits of a busy off-season for the region. Figures released last week by Paymark shows a massive 36.7 per cent increase in hospitality spending in Nelson on Labour Day, the day after the Rugby World Cup final and a jump of 18.5 per cent over the four days ending on Labour Day. Nelson City Council also announced last week that six “off-season” events it funded attracted thousands of visitors to the region. The major beneficiaries of the council funding were the Oi You! Urban Art Exhibition, the NZ Italian Festival, the South Island Masters Games, Taste Nelson, the Nelson Cycle Festival and the NZ Mixed Golf Foursomes Championship. The funding, delivered through the Nelson Events Marketing and Development Programme (NEMDP), is intended to help develop distinct events that will bring economic benefits to Nelson City by attracting visitors in the shoulder and off peak seasons. “These events are great examples of the programme delivering as it was intended: developing events that are bringing visitors to Nelson and enhancing the profile of the city,” says Bill Findlater, chair of the NEMDP and CEO of Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency. “Each of these events is contributing something unique to Nelson, and has the ability to grow significantly over time and attract more and more visitors.” In addition to bringing visitors to the city, one

Thousands turn out for fleet Blessing It started with fireworks and ended under blue sky. The Blessing of the Fleet had it all this year. An estimated crowd of 4000 packed Wakefield Quay to remember those who lost their lives at sea and offer their best wishes to the current fishing fleet. There were day-time fireworks, sea rescue drills, fish, chips and scallops to enjoy. As it tends to do at sea, the weather threatened to turn sour but just af-

ter lunch the sky cleared as Bishop Richard Ellena, Reverend Jeff Cotton and Father Michael O’Dea led the blessing before the bell tolled in remembrance, a wreath was laid and doves were released into the sky. The multitude of boats present then went into procession as fog horns bellowed amid the booming fireworks. The event is usualy held in July but was delayed due to work at the quay.
