Winter line up boosts economy
As the afterglow of the Rugby World Cup eases nation-wide, Nelson leaders say the city is now starting to count the benefits of a busy off-season for the region. Figures released last week by Paymark shows a massive 36.7 per cent increase in hospitality spending in Nelson on Labour Day, the day after the Rugby World Cup final and a jump of 18.5 per cent over the four days ending on Labour Day. Nelson City Council also announced last week that six “off-season” events it funded attracted thousands of visitors to the region. The major beneficiaries of the council funding were the Oi You! Urban Art Exhibition, the NZ Italian Festival, the South Island Masters Games, Taste Nelson, the Nelson Cycle Festival and the NZ Mixed Golf Foursomes Championship. The funding, delivered through the Nelson Events Marketing and Development Programme (NEMDP), is intended to help develop distinct events that will bring economic benefits to Nelson City by attracting visitors in the shoulder and off peak seasons. “These events are great examples of the programme delivering as it was intended: developing events that are bringing visitors to Nelson and enhancing the profile of the city,” says Bill Findlater, chair of the NEMDP and CEO of Nelson Regional Economic Development Agency. “Each of these events is contributing something unique to Nelson, and has the ability to grow significantly over time and attract more and more visitors.” In addition to bringing visitors to the city, one

Thousands turn out for fleet Blessing It started with fireworks and ended under blue sky. The Blessing of the Fleet had it all this year. An estimated crowd of 4000 packed Wakefield Quay to remember those who lost their lives at sea and offer their best wishes to the current fishing fleet. There were day-time fireworks, sea rescue drills, fish, chips and scallops to enjoy. As it tends to do at sea, the weather threatened to turn sour but just af-

ter lunch the sky cleared as Bishop Richard Ellena, Reverend Jeff Cotton and Father Michael O’Dea led the blessing before the bell tolled in remembrance, a wreath was laid and doves were released into the sky. The multitude of boats present then went into procession as fog horns bellowed amid the booming fireworks. The event is usualy held in July but was delayed due to work at the quay.

In addition to bringing visitors to the city, one of the objectives of sponsoring events is raising the profile of Nelson as a destination. Three of the events received significant national media coverage. “The Programme has been operational for three years and is gaining momentum, with a steady stream of new events applying for sponsorship funding and continued support to help development of
existing events.” says Bill. “It is particularly encouraging to see start-up events benefit from the Nelson City Council sponsorship.” The positive news around the funding has capped off an exciting spring for the region as it prepares to head into its more traditional busy period over summer. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he was “thrilled” with the number of visitors to the region over the past few months.

The 34 year-old man who beat another man with a cricket bat early Saturday morning has been identified as Nathan John Ellen. The man is alledged to have waited in
the bushes for his victim to come out of a Waimea Rd pub. He then attacked him with a cricket bat, breaking his arm and knocking him unconscious. The attack only
stopped when the tavern’s owner came to the victim’s rescue and fought the attacker off. The alledged attacker has been remanded in custody with plea until Monday.
Best chips in town Victory Square Fish & Chips has the best hot chips from Timaru to the Cook Straight according to the Best Chip Shop competition. Maureen Machin and Mark Staddon’s shop has been named a regional winner in this year’s Best Chip Shop Competition for Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast and Canterbury. “We are very pleased to have won, it’s a wonderful feeling” says Maureen. But it was certainly no fluke adds Mark, “We try extremely hard to get it right, every day we do our best.” Six regional winners were selected from a pool of 18 finalists, following a “rigorous” judging process. “There was customer text voting and mystery judges and lab tests,” says Maureen. Nelson hen lays massive egg A Nelson woman has been left stunned by the egg her seven month old hen produced last week. Weighing in at a whopping 130 grams Wendy Larkin says it’s the biggest she has ever seen and she has had chickens since she was a child. The world record for a hen’s egg is miles away for the cocky Nelson hen, almost twice the size of the one it produced. Wendy says the egg was only a double-yolker but had “a heck of a lot” of white around it. She says she isn’t sure what made the hen produce the massive egg, which is at least twice the size of a regular egg, but says their diet of vegetables, seed, bugs, grass and fruit kept them healthy and that would have helped. “It’s quite extraordinary though, I’ve never seen Victory’s Wendy Larkin with her favourite hen. Water problem solved in Atawhai says NCC
Upset water users in Atawhai have been promised the high levels of chlorine detected in their water last week has been solved. Nelson City Council staff detected the high levels of chlorine residual in the water supply in Atawhai last Thursday. It advised residents not to drink the water or shower. But at least one resident called Nelson Weekly to say she was so unhappy she has vowed not to pay her water bill as she was still affected by the problem on Friday. “Why should we pay for a service we aren’t getting,” she said. NCC says the problem was solved on Friday but did not say how the water became contaminated.
Amateur artists impress teacher
ARTISTS: Sarah Brock, Deb Kunzli, Jackie MacDonald and Stephen Coote check out some of their work at the Refinery Art Gallery. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
If you venture to the Refinery Art Gallery this week you will find an exhibition featuring some of the newest talent on the Nelson art scene. For the second year artwork by the students of portrait artist Sarah Brock fills the walls with faces and figures in living colour and charcoal black. “I could see all of my students work was strong in its own right, but some people have never exhibited before and were reluctant” says Sarah. But the featured artists, who range in age from 16 to 80, have a mentor with belief and drive. “I knew the work really deserved being
in an exhibition, I really pushed to put it together and I think we have an extraordinary show,” she says. Jackie MacDonald, a well-known Dichoric Art Glass Jeweller, thinks that moving into sketching and painting is a natural progression but showing her canvased work for the first time was a new experience. “We were here at the launch with lots of people and it was quite a thrill to listen to the feedback,” she says. Stephen Coote added: “It was fantastic to just stand in the crowd and listen to people commenting on your work and looking it over.”

Port Nelson annonces $4.2M profit to shareholders Port Nelson produced another strong finanical result, turning out a $42 million profit despite “tough market conditions” for exporters. But it isn’t getting too carried away with the result and expects a tough 12 months ahead with demand for logs from China “softening” and a massive 200 percent hike in its insurance bill, due to the Canterbury earthquake. Nick says while it had been a postive year to the end of June, there were indications the demand for logs from China was now softening. He says there were other major challenges facing key port users. “The skyrocketing value of the New Zealand dollar has made life very difficult for many exporters, with the export apple industry again facing a difficult year,” he says.
Local musicans create song for Haiti
MC Kurnel Luke Epapara is the feature artist on a new song hoping to raise money for Haiti. The song features a range of New Zealand and International Musicans and was written by Minuit band member and Nelson man Paul Dodge. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
Two Nelson musicans have been joined by a host of international artists for a new song aiming to raise money for earthquake ravished Haiti. Proceeds from the track will go to Haiti charity, the Kenbe La Foundation, set up by another Nelsonian, Emily Sanson-Rejouis. Kenbe La, which means “never give up” in Haitian Creole, is the title and theme of the song created to aid work being done to rebuild schools in Haiti. Nelson-based MC Luke Epapara is the feature artist on the track and says he had no hesitation when he was asked to be a part of unique endeavour. “I do everything in my power to give my kids the best opportunities they can have, so when I was asked to do this it made perfect sense and I jumped at it,” says Luke. Emily set up the Kenbe La Foundation to help support schools for children. But while it is hoped the song will raise much needed funds, it is as much about raising awareness and hope. Former Nelsonians Paul Dodge and Ryan Beehre of Kiwi band Minuit were key elements as well, with Paul writing the music and Ryan doing the mixing. Paul also shot the video, when visiting Haiti with Emily. The track is available to download from http://kenbela. bandcamp.com as well as all digital stores and follow the story at http://kenbelafoundation.org.

Was the world cup a giant step for Nelson kind? It was a moment most Nelsonians wouldn’t have seen before – not in their own city anyway. An outburst of public affection in the most public of Nelson places. Trafalgar St was alive last Sunday night; strangers were hugging each other, families, students, young people and old. It was quite a show and I’d imagine the old Cathedral wouldn’t have seen anything like it for some time, and, even more surprising… it was for a rugby game. Believe it or not the All Blacks world cup win may have been more beneficial for the city than you might think. I will remember for the rest of my life watching the Crusaders play some team
from South Africa at Trafalgar Park about around and said: “Give it a rest, you’re in ten years ago; not for the game, but for a Nelson now, just relax”. comment I came to define as typically Nel- Everyone around seemed to react with resonian. actually celebrating. It was like another city, another country… or has Nelson just grown up a bit? I once heard Nelson Tasman Tourism chief Lynda Keane describe Nelson as a teenager who has just had their braces off. It has a beautiful smile but is just getting used to showing it off. Did we just get a bit more comfortable with our smile? I hope so; I hope we just turned a corner. The city I was born in and grew up in was so reserved that 10 years ago when I travelled overseas I couldn’t believe how excitable people were. I soon learned to join in the fun and now perhaps Nelson has too. Our Town is a fortnightly column.

LIBRARIES CLOSED: Nelson’s three libraries will be closed for three days from today. All three libraries (Nelson City, Stoke and Tahunanui) will be closed until Friday to allow new software to be installed. SEWER LEAK IN MONACO: A minor leak in the sewer rising main between Monaco and Bell Island (approximately 100m off the Monaco Peninsula) was found on Saturday and Nelson City Council says swimming and collecting shellfish in the area is banned. The leak is estimated at this stage to be around five cubic metres per day. Staff are assessing remedial works and until such time as these repairs can be put in place, the public is advised not to have any water contact around the Monaco Peninsula until further advice. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board, Public Health Service, Ministry of Fisheries, Department of Conversation, pollution control officials and local iwi have been notified of the leak.

CELLPHONE BLITZ: Nelson Police are now running a blitz on drivers using cellphones while driving, as stats show an increase in locals being caught using their phone while driving. From November 2009 until September 2010 in Tasman, offence notices were issued to 223 drivers in this district. In the current year, from November 2010 until September 2011, 269 offences have been detected. Framing the art, an art in itself Luke Dell knows art, he grew up with it. So the Tahunanui picture framer knows that finding the perfect frame for the perfect piece is an art in itself. Luke and his wife Amy run a picture framing business from their home on Tahunanui Dr and say the satisfaction of the perfect frame is a motivator for their love of the craft. Nelson has about five picture framing businesses, but for Luke, starting his own about two years ago was never a question of ‘should I?’, more ‘when I’. “My dad is a well-established Christchurch artist and he owned a picture framing business since he was young so I started doing it when I was about 14 years-old. It was about then that I knew this is what I wanted to do,” he says. Luke has had more than 12 years’ experience, after learning the trade through his parents he learnt various finishing techniques working for Ronald Mottram, one of Christchurch’s most highly regarded picture framers. When Luke and Amy decided to move their young family to Nelson he had one goal in mind. “From very early on when Amy and I were together I said we would have our own picture framing business based out of our home. It’s the perfect set-up
and when we came to Nelson we were just looking for the perfect house; we got it in Tahuna,” he says. Luke has spent the past two years building up the business and says he takes plenty of pride in doing a fantastic job. “People think ‘oh, it’s just sticking four bits of wood together,’ but you want your picture framer to have an eye for art and know what goes with what. That’s where I think I excel.” Luke says some of his frames take six days to make, spending half an hour each day to make it perfect. “Now people are realising that we are really good at what we do, especially the fine art stuff. A lot of our work is now custom hand-made frames. We run the timber locally and hand-finish to suit the piece. In fact we have one customer who just walked off the street one day, said she heard I knew what I was doing and asked me to frame several pieces of some of New Zealand’s well-known artists, they were priceless pieces. That was great fun and she still comes in with any new work she gets.” Luke says the art in picture framing is drawing attention to the piece. “As beautiful as the frame is, its job is to enhance and protect the art and make it look as the artist intended it.”
Tahunanui picture framer Luke Dell says framing the art is almost as important as the art itself. Photo: Andrew Board.

WOW Museum turns 10
Thousands of Nelsonians took part as the World of Wearable Art & Classic Cars Museum celebrated their 10th Anniversary on Sunday. The car park was jam-packed and the line stretched down the long hallway until the “full
house” sign was put up in the afternoon. “I sort of knew what to expect because I was here for the last open day, but this was almost unreal,” says marketing coordinator Jahmiel Sowman. Three thousand people flocked to see the most outrageous de-
signs ever to grace a stage and some of the prettiest pieces of metal ever to hold an engine. Entry to the museum was by gold coin donation, with the proceeds, over $3800, going to the children’s charity Purple Cake Day.
Powerful Gin blows Nelson’s socks off REVIEW Gin Wigmore strides casually out on stage at Nelson’s Theatre Royal clad in black hot pants, silver sequinned jacket, knee-high boots, face fresh devoid of the classic black kohl, and blond tussled hair tied loosely in a carefree ponytail. “Good evening ladies and gentlemen,” she says in an innocent very kiwi accent that bears no resemblance to her gravelled singing voice. “You can bite my cherry and we are gonna have a helluva good time,” with which the sell-out crowd takes their cue, erupts in cheers, and gets on with an hour and fifteen of pure home grown Gin. She leads off with a track from her new soonto-be-released album, Gravel & Wine and continues to belt out the next 18 numbers with a good balance of new material and songs from her debut album, Holy Smoke. “I promise I won’t do all my new stuff even though it’s really f****n good,” she laughs. Gin’s unique ability to pen deep meaningful songs that belie her 25 years, continues through in her new work with a beautiful melody that builds up with keyboard accompaniment re-
sembling a slight Joe Cocker flavour. She has some of the crowd dancing in the aisles during I Do, accompanying the band on ukulele, then encourages everyone to get up and dance as the music gets louder and the crowd becomes consumed in her irresistible passion and commitment. During Hey Ho, her wiry tattooed arms fling in controlled fashion in the air as she is doing what she does best. Her dance moves are nothing choreographed, but they are Gin, refreshingly unique which add to her appeal. Her new songs continue to be a mix of melody, soul and rock, supported on the night with three guitarists, keyboards, drums, brass, and Gin herself on acoustic guitar, ukulele and percussion. The six-piece all male band provide the backing vocals. With just five concerts on this current tour, we can be thankful she dared come to Nelson. Her concert delivered all the goods with utmost sincerity, like she wanted us all to leave personally satisfied. Get in quick for your tickets to her Neudorf Vineyard concerts on February 16 and 17. Tickets are available through Ticketdirect. Review by Bonnie Strawbridge.
Katherine Walker and Sarah Lauder were so inspired by the designs that they plan to put in an entry one day. “It would be a collaboration and it would be pretty radical,” says Katherine. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.

Who is the region’s top team?
Treasure trove of delights One year on, mother and daughter owners of Black Cat Vintage say they couldn’t be happier with the enthusiastic response from their customers. Black Cat Vintage was opened a year ago today after Sarah and Rachel saw the premises and thought it would be the perfect spot for their vintage shop. They totally redecorated in a vintage theme and stocked it with a treasure trove of eclectic items. It is a relatively small shop near the Black Cat Dairy, but you will be delighted at what you will find. “We like our stock to be beautifully presented and displayed – not too crowded,” says Sarah. The pair takes great pride in making sure their stock is immaculate. As well as items for the home, they also sell unique vintage clothing in-
cluding hats, shoes, retro swimwear, jewellery and accessories. Take advantage of their lay-by service and gift vouchers – great for Christmas! Rachel says, “We have wonderful, loyal customers. Many have become friends and they keep coming back to see what’s new, as our stock is always changing.” Sarah and Rachel are always looking to buy stock and encourage people to bring in any old items including jewellery, china, collectables and small furniture. They are also interested in estate sales, collections and pre-garage sale purchases. To celebrate, Sarah and Rachel are having a 1st birthday sale where everything on the pavement outside their shop is reduced by 50%. This is a chance to buy something vintage to treasure at a bargain price.
From doctors to roofers, from mates to collegues, the 2012 Bowater Motor Group Top Team will put them all to the test and only one will be crowned the region’s top team. Based on the popular television show Top Town, the local version is now in its third year. The fun event pits teams against each other in a series of challenges, mainly physical, but organiser Hayden Bryant, of Sport Tasman, says that doesn’t nessersary favour athletes. “Because the activities are things people only do at this event they aren’t trained for it so the average Joe often
does better than seasoned athletes.” Hayden says the event has two fields, school-aged and adults. The adult classes features a range of work teams, friends getting together and sports teams. The event is split into three heats, in Motueka, Murchison and at Saxton Field with the top few winners qualifing for the finals in Upper Moutere in late November. The Saxton Field heat is being held on Sunday, November 13. For more details or to enter, email haydenb@ sporttasman.org.nz or call Hayden on 923 2314.

The all-new Hyundai i40 Wagon has beaten the new Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz B class, BMW 1 series and the Mazda CX-5 to win the Golden Award at this year’s EuroCarBody Conference, held in Germany. The award is regarded as the highest international accolade for body engineering, and the winner is decided after evaluation over a three day period by the EuroCarBody Board, as well as the entire international expert audience of 500 conference delegates. “This is the first time Hyundai has entered the awards, and as a result, Hyundai also became the first Asian car manufacturer to be awarded the top prize,” says Hyundai New Zealand’s Chief Operating Officer, Tom Ruddenklau. “And with the all-new Hyundai i40 Wagon due to launch here in late January 2012, New Zealanders will be able to see for themselves what so impressed this international peer group of automotive engineers and designers.” Hosted by Automotive Circle International, an organization consisting of top automotive suppliers and manufacturers, the judges praised the advanced engineering and effective use of
materials, as well as the production efficiency of the i40 Wagon, which scored 37.98 out of a maximum 50 points. The closest competitor and second-placed car, the Audi A6, scored 35.86, with the Mercedes B-Class in third place achieving 34.66. A total of nine of Europe and Japan’s largest automotive manufacturers competed for the award. The all-new i40 Wagon was designed and engineered in Europe, and uses high strength steel and improved joins in its structure. This means the i40 Wagon’s lightweight body has high energy absorption efficiency which increases safety for occupants in the event of an accident. The Hyundai i40 Wagon recently achieved a maximum 5* ANCAP safety rating and is in the lowest insurance grouping for a mid-segment car in the UK, thanks to its innovative body structure. “The Hyundai i40 Wagon is beautifully designed but also extremely practical,” says Tom. “To have been given this endorsement by the world’s top automotive engineering experts, and to be benchmarked as the market leader for design is a fantastic achievement for Hyundai.”

Contactless card technology has arrived Business Systems Nelson and Skyzer have released the SkyPay-300 terminal – as an addition for the Ingenico 5100 EFTPOS terminals. Europe has been operating this technology for some time, and many overseas tourists were looking for the terminals during their travels. We are now able to provide these terminals to help cut queues by having a 4-5 second transaction time. For purchases less than $80.00 no PIN is needed, but should the amount be over $80.00 – you can use the system by entering your PIN.
Business Systems Nelson predicts the terminals will be ideal for the summer season, where crowds are expected to arrive at our tourist spots. They are able to demo a unit at your place, or at their office in the Stoke Mall; they will also be on dis-
play at the Nelson A & P Show later in November. The Ingenico range of EFTPOS Terminals are leading the way with new technology, and the Mobile EFTPOS terminals are popular for Market Days, Fundraising Nights and events. Business System Nelson rents these terminals for short term events and their customers find they are able to improve their sales efforts by having mobile EFGTPOS there ‘on the night’. Business Systems Nelson in conjunction with Skyzer Technologies, ASB Bank and Paymark are proving to be market leaders in the introduction of the Contactless EFTPOS technology into Nelson – give us a call to arrange a demonstration!

Gr wing Things
With Robyn Hollis
I am sitting out on the back deck with the sun shining and everything around blossoming and so blooming lovely, that I really do not know where to start!! The photo this week is of yet another of my favourite trees. This is one of the many varieties of the Japanese flowering cherry, Prunus “Shimidsu-zakura”. There are many of these in and around Nelson and all are looking great at present. This and “Shirotae – Mt Fuji” are two of my special picks as they both have a growth habit suited to the smaller garden. They have a
lovely spreading habit and create an ideal shade area for the summer. They also have vibrant autumn colour so are a double delight in the garden. We put a couple of lounge seats out under this one in the summer and solve the problems of the world with a few G & T’s – works a treat!! The blossoms are not long lived (thanks to the winds which seem to come just as they are at their best...) but the display in spring is well worth waiting for. I have under-planted this one with euphorbia “polychroma’ and hosta “gold standard” and these colours and textures seem to blend well. The bright lime green provides a stunning contrast to the delicate pink and white blooms of the cherry. The vege patch: Finally I have been able to harvest my leeks, spinach and rocket, freeing up the garden to plant other things for the season. First I deep dug the garden and added my Dolomite lime, compost, blood and bone and several bags of pelletised Sheep manure; Tui started making this product several years ago and called it Garden Galore. It is now available in many forms and all seem to work just as well. It makes such a difference to the structure of the soil – seems to lighten it up as well as adding nitrogen. I use Dolomite lime as opposed to ordinary garden lime as Dolomite has added magnesium which assists the plants to take up the nutrients they need. Mix all this together with the hoe, even out a bit and you are ready to plant. If you have a small garden area, as I do, it is good to rotate your crops. This year beans will be where tomatoes were, silverbeet and green crops where beans were and so on. Only thing left to do now is to plant tomato seedlings (but I will give them a couple of weeks yet to strengthen up), stand back and admire your work and watch them grow. I also recommend the use of a product called Seasol when planting out new seedlings, transplanting shrubs or trees or just as a treatment for established plants and lawns, (I do this quite a lot, as a garden is always a “work in progress”) This is a seaweed concentrate, and as well as stimulating root development. The garden centres have an excellent range of vege

Q& A
Ann from Stoke has asked what she can do to keep the snails and slugs off her emerging Hosta’s and vege plants? Blitzem and Baysol are two products which have been around for some time and both are effective but must be used with care. They can, I believe, kill cats and hedgehogs if ingested, although both do have an additive which should make them unpalatable to inquisitive pets and other wildlife. The best way to use these is to make a bait station using an old soft drink bottle. Cut it in half and make a hole in the side big enough for the snail to go through (remember his house has to fit as well!) Place the pellets in a heap and push the bottle down to secure it in place. This will let the snails in and keep cats etc out and also stop the rain from wetting the pellets. QUASH is a very good and much more environmentally friendly bait and the one I would normally recommend when asked. Crushed egg shells is another method – scatter these around the base or along the rows of plants to be protected. Also wool products (sheep dags or wool clippings from the floor of the woolshed) work as well. They stick to the foot of the snails and slugs so they avoid the area. Another one I have heard of but never tried is leaving saucers of stale beer out near the plants you want to protect. Being married to an Australian, stale beer is never available! Apparently they are attracted to the yeast in the beer, fall in to the container and drown – not a bad way to go…

Speedway season roars into action Phillip Rollo He might have ended the night without a bonnet and just two wheels, but Craig Boote certainly left his mark on the track as he returned to the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway fulltime. The three-time New Zealand Champion took out heat two, following a fourth place in the opening race, before tangling with Ian Clayworth in the final race of the night. Craig says he was a little overawed by the car’s power, but is confident his fourth New Zealand title is well within his grasp. After all, Huntly – where the New Zealand Super Stock Championship is being held – is where “The Boss” claimed his second national title. But getting past current 1NZ Dale Ewers may be easier said than done, according to Craig, who rates Nelson’s current crop of Super Stock drivers as the best in the country. “Once Dale gets past you or he’s in front of you, he’s just about near-impossible to catch. I’ve studied Dale’s driving and he’s far smoother and less aggressive than I am,” he says. “The pace in Nelson is the fastest in the country. If you can win, by no matter what margin, in Nelson, then you can win on any track in New
Zealand.” With all the cars Craig has owned and won championships in, this is the first time he has had a car built specifically for him. He says the lure of the project is what enticed him back to the track. “I just want to lift the bar in the class, which was always going to be a challenge, but I think we’ve achieved that.” Despite the hype, there is a mark of respect
amongst the drivers, and Craig says he is not a marked man here in Nelson. “Everybody in the class is all capable of putting each other in an ambulance. These cars are so fast now and we’re all capable of hurting each other. There’s a tremendous amount of respect for each other. We’ll have a bit of fun, we are there to entertain.” Although he admits it might be a different kettle of fish when he travels north.
Craig has only done 23 laps of Nelson’s Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway, but he has got plenty of time to get used to it before he tackles his second goal – winning the 2013 New Zealand Super Stock Championship in Nelson, with 1NZ on his body. The next Speedway meet at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park track is Saturday, November 12.

Scorching times at season’s first athletics meet Phillip Rollo
onds, a time that shaved 14 seconds off his previous time from the start of last season. His focus this season is putting in strong performances to attract interest from US colleges, and his sprint finish was encouraging, he says. “I got a big kick which I haven’t had for a long time.” Despite his strong start in the 1000m, Craig will be focussing on the 3000m and 5000m throughout the season. Jess Martin, running in one of her first track meets, also put in one of the performances of the night, leading the women’s 1000m from start to finish. She held off team-mates Pip Dalley and Emma Dallison coming in to the final bend, and her time of 3min 11.40sec missed the Tasman Centre record by nine-tenths of a second. Hannah Shepard won the women’s 60m, 100m, 200m and long jump. The next Twilight Series meet will be held at Saxon Oval this Friday night at 6pm.
The Athletics Nelson Twilight Series began with a bang and ended with ended with a flurry of top season-opening performances. Four of the region’s premier athletes have already stamped their mark on the 2011/12 season and against the biggest number of competitors the sport has seen in years, at Saxton Oval on Friday night. New Zealand’s fastest man over 200m and 400m, Alex Jordan, blitzed the 100m field in just 10.88 seconds - his third fastest recorded 100m. He then followed up his pursuit on the track with a 21.46 second 200m, just outside of his personal best. Alex was surprised to start the season with such ferocity, but is eager to see what he will do in the coming months. “It felt good [to be back on the track] and gave me a boost. I’m definitely looking forward to racing on this track again in the future,” says Alex. While quietly confident after his performance, Alex remained humble about his season goals. “As long as I can better my times from last season I’ll be over the moon, whether it’s by one second or by .01 of a second.” Dale Pritchard surpassed his Tasman and Athletics Nelson records with his 13.86m in the shot put and 45.14m in the discuss, while long jumper Brendon Barnett leaped out to 7.01m. Brendon says the focus now will be consistently jumping over the seven meter barrier, something he has struggled to do in his young career. “It’s pretty promising considering my jumps at the start of last season were about 6.20m,” he says. His jump was despite only training a small portion in the past weeks. “It’s probably the work I’ve been doing in the gym. I’m running a lot quicker than what I was last season and now I’ve got that strength to handle it off the board.” Craig Lautenslager outsprinted early pace setter Cameron Murdoch leads the packs during the 1500 metre race Cameron Murdoch, to finish at Saxton Field on Friday night. It was the season’s first offical the 1000m in 2min 34.99 sec- twlight meet. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The under 14 representative tennis trophy has been held by Nelson for a number of years but the unavaliblity of its number one cost it the title this year. Marlborough won the tie 12 matches to 4. SAILING: Despite a wild, wet, and windy day, 23 boats in the 2 divisions lined up for the 6pm start of race 5 of the Vining Ship Brokers Spring Series last Wednesday, which by the 6pm start, conditions had settled down to overcast, with a 16 – 18 knot northerly. In division one Mrs Jones (Charlie Gallagher) led the fleet of 14 until on the homeward run back to the finish was overtaken by the catamaran G Force (Hilton Grant) finishing in a time of 1h 10m 18s, 2nd Mrs Jones 1h 12m 02s, 3rd Blackout (Noel Eichbaum) 1h 17m 25s. On handicap Velocity skippered by Adam Langbridge, won with Owen Paterson’s Forth Dimension coming second and Mrs Jones third In the second division South Seas Clipper (John Cotton) once again showed the way round the shorter division 2 course, finishing in a time of 1h 17m 23s 2nd home Dardanelle 1h 20m 29s, 3rd Wind Dancer 1h 20m 54s. With the handicap Lindsay Duff ’s Wind Dancer came in first with Mike Cotton’s Dardanelle second and Robin Smith’s Ringleader in third.
FC Nelson will play in its first tournament as a junior collective this week. FC Nelson, comprising of FC Nelson City, FC Nelson Metro, FC Nelson United and FC Tahunanui, will field a team in the 13th grade of the Taupo AFC’s McCartney Invitation Tournament - one of the top tournaments in the country for young footballers. FC Nelson will be the only squad out of the 70 competing from the South Island. The team features a handful of the Nelson 13th grade representative squad that finished second in the South Island last month. Included
in that group is striker Van Ronald Hlewceu, James Peters and Mat TodSmith. All three have been involved in New Zealand Football’s National Training Centre for potential 2015 FIFA Under-17 World Cup hopefuls. The side will compete on November 5 and 6. FC Nelson is likely to make the trip north annually, giving its players football experience from out of town. The team’s management would like to thank New Zealand Community Trust, FC Nelson and sponsor Solar City for their significant contribution in enabling the side to venture to Taupo.

Mountain biker wins school prize One of the region's only female downhill mountain bikers was the toast of Nelson College for Girls last week. Veronique Sandler claimed the Old Girl’s Rose Bowl, the secondary school's most prestigious sporting accolade, at its annual sports prize giving. Veronique's top six finish at the UCI 2011 World Mountain Bike Championships in Switzerland in September was enough to see her come out trumps over her fellow students. Veronique was clearly honoured to receive the award. “Last year, I saw a girl who was one of the sports captains that I kind of looked up to, [and she] got it. And I always thought it would be really cool, so I made sure I tried really hard,” she says. Veronique had only been in Nelson for two years, previously living in Auckland.
