Stadium to re-open after flood Saxton Stadium will re-open this Friday, almost six months after parts of it were destroyed by floods. The $12 million indoor sports stadium was officially opened in 2009 but suffered major flood damage in April this year, including to its specially-made 3800 square metre hardwood floor. The offices in Sports House, that house many of the region’s sports administrators and Sport Tasman, were also damaged, forcing staff out of the building until mid-September. The stadium will be re-opened by Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio after a new $500,000 floor was flown in from Denmark and re-laid. The opening is just in time for the South Island Masters Games that will be hosting its registration in the stadium the day after the opening and using the facility over the following week. Nelson City Council says the flooding is unlikely to happen

again as it was a “one in 500 year event” but it has completed some remedial work to Orphanage Creek to minimise overflow into the stadium area, just in case. The entire cost of the rebuild – minus the $10,000 excess – was covered by insurance. Aldo says having the stadium open again is great news for the region, after a winter where several sports, including netball, had to move venues. “Saxton Stadium is one of our most loved facilities and it will be great to see it open for people to use again.” The stadium was the biggest building affected by the April floods but many other homes and businesses were also damaged. An estimated cost of the entire clean-up has run into the millions.

After almost three months of growth, the beards and hair all came off on the forecourt of Nelson Motorhomes on Sunday afternoon, in the process raising $1658.50 for the Nelson Tasman Hospice Trust. President of the club, Gavin Hill, says it has been a huge effort and it was great to see everyone together for the big shave, done by Nathan Nukunuku of Chop City Barbers. “To me it’s a hell of a lot more than I thought we’d get. I thought we’d get between $750 and a

he wouldn’t have to wear a beard net at his factory job any more. Gavin says the social club will stay together and has moved to the Rising Sun. He says they won’t do a beard growing fundraiser again but will do something else next year, “maybe a toenail growing competition”, he joked.
The money raised for the hospice was only part of its haul over the past week. Fundraising coordinator at the hospice trust, Hamish Kennedy, says they were also contacted about a Z Halifax worker who shaved her hair off to raise money for the trust. Tania Eggers is still collecting after having her hair shaved.

‘DNA’ to prevent school theft
A new initiative to drive down the number of thefts from local schools and make it easier to trace stolen items has principals smiling. Nelson primary and intermediate schools each received a “SelectaDNA” kit last Thursday to help them keep thieves out and their valuables safe. Each kit contains an invisible solution that has a DNA sequence unique to them. It can be applied to laptops and other learning equipment such as iPads and tablets – expensive technology items that schools struggle to replace. Invisible

to the naked eye, if the item is stolen and then recovered at a later date, police can identify the school it belongs to. St Joseph’s school principal Mike Burton marked valuable items within two hours of receiving his kit last week and says the initiative is an extremely positive one for schools in the region. He says while St Joseph’s hasn’t had any particular issues with theft, there is always the risk and

the kit was much appreciated. “It’s great, I can see it is a fantastic partnership between the schools and the police. A lot of effort goes into raising the funds to buy these valuable items for our school. It’s unfortunate that people think they can come along and take them, so this is a welcome initiative.” SelectaDNA is being delivered as part of BNZ’s Safer Schools programme and the on-going battle against school property crime. St Joseph’s was part of the latest rollout that has seen 2500 schools nationwide implement the SelectaDNA idea. Mike says that it’s not just a solution to tracks down goods once they are stolen either, with his school also receiving warning posters to display on school grounds, so that wouldbe thieves are also deterred. “Any additional deterrent is fantastic. It is actually probably going to end up saving us thousands of dollars over time. We are very grateful.” Nelson Bays area commander Inspector Steve Greally has labelled the programme “a fantastic concept” and urges anyone who has heard of it to get in behind it. He says police will be following up with visits to local second-hand dealers to make sure any goods in store don’t have the SelectaDNA marking on them and if they do they will “track it right back to who dropped it off ”.

Natureland’s new owners want to re-energize zoo Sinead Ogilvie Reporter
reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz Nelsonian Michael Rutledge will return to his hometown a local hero next month as the new co-owner of Natureland. Michael, a brand manager at DB Breweries and his partner Meg Selby, a zoologist, both 29, have brought Natureland back from the brink of nonexistence. The new ownership comes after the Orana Wildlife Trust announced last year that it was stepping away from Natureland - leaving its’ ownership up in the air. While Michael and Meg missed the cut off for the formal tendering process, three other proposals from different parties that were brought to the Nelson City Council were “no goes” and Michael and Meg were able to present their case. With council approval and a lot of support from the community, Michael and Meg are rearing to go. They say they hope to build on the long standing history Natureland has in Nelson. “The fact that it’s been there for so long, since the 1960s is an asset because you

You couldn’t ask for more, stepping into that.” Mike has memories of being there as a child and Meg says the history is a reason Natureland has lasted. “People really remember connections they have with animals. We can offer that and hopefully improve on it. The location, the proximity to people, the proximity to tourists, that all just lends itself to being geographically a brilliant part of the community.” Meg says they hope to focus on native
animals but continue to introduce exotics as well, with a focus on conservation. “What really drives me is I really think that conservation has to be sold to people in a way that they understand, in a way that actually means something to them. If they can have an experience that makes it relevant to them then it becomes more meaningful. Our goal is to help make those connections with the local community so they feel involved.” Michael says he has been inundated by local support since announcing his plans to take over. “We knew that Natureland had a really strong, positive standing in the community but we’ve been blown away. It’s really humbling and encouraging for us. It’s that validation that what we are doing is absolutely worthwhile and going to work.” Joining Michael and Meg on the new Natureland Wildlife Trust is Mike Thomas, who is president of the Tahunanui Business Association; accountant and consultant Alan Hinton; and Brian Mills, who has come full circle after initially handing over the keys to the facility when it first opened for business in the 60s. The duo is set to take over the reins of the Tahunanui zoo in November.

Our port records $7.1m profit
The ratepayer-owned Port Nelson has recorded a net profit of $7.1 million and has assets worth $190.5 million, says its chairman, Nick Patterson. Nick reported to shareholders at the company’s AGM last week that the port had kept its expenses within budgeted levels despite operating in a challenging environment. “The high value of the NZ dollar against
the Japanese yen and overseas markets continue to be challenging,” he said. Container volumes and total cargo were slightly down on the previous year but revenue was up to $39.6 million from $38.8 million the year before. Port Nelson’s “non-current tangible” assets are now valued at $190.5 million, up from $104 million in 2004. “In the same period the total amount
paid back to our shareholders by way of annual dividends, special dividends and a $25 million share buy back in 2007 has amounted to more than $79 million. At an average of just under $8 million per annum over that ten year period, that is a further clear indicator of the value that this business delivers to its shareholders and the residents of our region,” reported Nick at the AGM.
Apple exports were up on the previous year, continuing the positive trend from the 2012 season. Wine volumes also continued to increase both generally and in terms of volumes handled by PNL’s Quaypack operation. Nick says he was pleased to report that PNL had retained visits from existing container vessels and had welcomed its first cruise vessel visit for some years.
Jeweller’s ‘mayor’ billboards forced to come down A Nelson jeweller has been told to pull down his “cheeky” billboards that mimic an election advertisement. Glen James erected seven billboards in various spots around Nelson last week but was quickly contacted by Nelson City Council and told they break the advertising rules around the city and must come down. Candidates are allowed to erect billboards for two months before the
election and must be pulled down the day before it closes. There are strict rules around size and placement. Because Glen’s billboards aren’t election hoardings he must have resource consent. Glen says he did it for a bit of a laugh and to grab a bit of extra attention for his business. “They were quickly onto it though,” he says. “I got a call the very day they went up, the guy wasn’t too happy.”

Nelson mother loses 50kg Andrew Board Editor
andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz
Nelson mother Julie Redwood can remember struggling to walk down the road and being in pain while tying her shoelace. She weighed close to 130kg and had recently watched her overweight mother die at the age of just 57. It may sound like a dark place to be and it was, says Julie, but without it she may not be where she is today. She’s now 50kg lighter with a diploma on the wall and is helping others lose weight and improve their lives. Julie says she was always overweight, at 15 years old she weighed 15 stone, or 97kg. She suffered from low self-esteem and confidence and had yo-yo dieted for most of her life. Shortly after she was married and had her first child Julie says her husband lost his job, making money tight. “I couldn’t even afford to go out for coffee with a friend. But one thing I could afford to do was bake so I baked and I ate and I got up to 129kg again.” That was just 1kg off the heaviest she’d ever weighed. “I was really shocked, I didn’t think I’d see that number on the scales again. Then
my mum died, I watched her die of cancer at age 57 and I didn’t want that to be a legacy for my kids. We had two more kids and when my youngest was a year old I made the decision to change my life.” Her first walk with her year old daughter was tough. “We walked up the hill and every time I stopped to catch my breath I’d lean over say ‘I promise I’ll never be this weight again and I promise I’ll never be this unfit again’. She was only a year old so didn’t really care but it was a promise to me, a commitment to myself that this is it, this is a lifestyle change.” Julie began to eat healthy food, exercised more and as she lost weight her confidence grew. In 2011 she took another big step, enrolling to study at NMIT. “When I was growing up I felt that because I was fat I must be lazy, because those two go together, and that means you’re stupid. So those were the labels I’d put on myself. So when I studied and realised that I wasn’t stupid or lazy or fat it was a real eye-opener, it was a huge change.” Julie graduated with a diploma of applied fitness, with merit, last year and is also about to complete a wellness coaching paper, studying the physiologically behind

DOC enlists bounty hunters to catch pests A $10 bounty on great white butterflies is being introduced by the Department of Conservation for the school holidays, to help eradicate the pest from the Nelson area. Conservation Minister Nick Smith announced the scheme last week and says they want the great white butterflies “dead not alive”. “They are an unwelcome pest and pose a major threat to endangered native cresses, and garden and commercial plants like cabbage and broccoli,” says Nick. The peak period for the butterflies emerging from pupae this spring coincides with the school holidays. It’s a great opportunity to involve school children in conservation, as well as earning some extra pocket money, he says. “The bounty is not limited to children. Adults are also invited to catch and kill great white
butterflies and bring them in to claim their bounty.” Butterflies should be put in a jar or sealed plastic bag and stored in the freezer so they don’t go mouldy, until they can be dropped off to DOC’s Nelson office on weekdays between Monday September 30 and Friday October 11. The bounty will not be available at other times and is only for adult butterflies. “Great white butterflies are mostly found in and around the Port Hills area of Nelson, but have been found as far out as Stoke and the Glen,” says Nick. “It can be difficult to tell great white butterflies and small white butterflies apart but it doesn’t matter if small whites are killed as they are also a garden pest. DOC is still asking people to bring in small white butterflies to double check they are not great whites.”

Women’s group aims to make a difference “This voluntary group is about more than just sitting around drinking coffee, it’s about making a difference in the community.” That’s the statement one of the Waimea Nelson Inner Wheel Club’s members, who says the newly formed group is for fun volunteers wanting to better the community they live in. “It’s for women. We’re a service organisation. What we do is raise money for the community and community projects,” says Sharon Martin. International Inner Wheel is the world’s largest voluntary women’s service organisation, with a world membership of 103,000 in 103 countries. New Zealand has 59 clubs. The Waimea Nelson charter is in some ways a merger of two groups, although the Nelson Inner Wheel Club has not been active in recent times, and its current membership includes

Inner Wheel’s membership includes women over the age of 18 who are interested in meeting new people, working together,

Lets be NZ's top voters, says councillor The contest is on for our local election candidates, but one councillor is saying there is an even bigger competition at stake – and it's one that's worth voting for. Despite being distributed a week ago, just 9.87 per cent of voting papers have been returned to the electoral office, a statistic that is not pointing towards a dramatic increase in the amount of people voting and is in fact down on this time last election. But that won't be fazing Mike Ward who is hoping that with a bit of competition added into the mix, Nelsonians will crack the top spot for having the most votes roll-in for their elections than any other city in the country. Although Nelson is already in the number three spot with 52.20 per cent of voting papers returned during the previous election, Mike says that figure just isn't good enough and is calling on more people to take action. "To me it just makes really good sense for more people to vote. We are currently third equal for the highest number of votes returned

in New Zealand but I hope we can improve on that and take out the number one spot." He says he wants Nelsonians to "be better than we have been in the past" and "beef it up a bit for these elections". With essentially only half of Nelson's population bothering to have their say at the 2010 elections, Mike is calling on locals to start thinking of their future and get their papers sent back in before the deadline. "I've been telling everyone about it, the idea of being number one just appeals and I think, why wouldn't people want to vote? It's the very least people can do, living in this community. It’s a city you live in, it’s a city you work in and bring your kids up in, why wouldn’t you want to have a say in the people running it?" Voting papers for the Nelson City Council elections close at midday on Saturday October 12.

Police target student drivers Students driving to school were the focus of a recent operation by Nelson Police. Police targeted Waimea College, Garin College, Nayland College, Nelson College, Nelson College for Girls, Motueka High School and Golden Bay High School before and after school. Officers were checking for compliance
with the conditions of graduated drivers licences, speed, seatbelts along with warrants of fitness and registration. A total of 87 infringement notices were issued. Twelve of those were for breaching the conditions of a graduated driver’s licence. Three drivers had their licences suspended and one person was caught
driving while suspended and had their vehicle impounded. About 300 vehicles were checked over the one day operation. Road Policing Manager Inspector Jenni Richardson says further operations were planned. “We are aware there are a large number
of young people who routinely ignore the conditions of their graduated licence, and in some instances parents are condoning that by allowing young drivers to carry passengers. “Young people in cars are high risk road users who are a priority in our crash prevention strategy,” she says.
Lions to renovate hospital cottage Locals teeing off for an annual fundraising golf tournament will also be helping young mums at Nelson Hospital. Each year the South Pine Nelson Host Lions Golf Tournament is played over two days at Nelson Golf Course and Greenacres Golf Course. Money raised from the tournament is then donated to a local charity and over the past 30 years the tournament has raised and donated more than $330,000. This year the tournament – which will be played on November 23 and 24 – will be raising money for the renovation of a cottage at Nelson Hospital. The house is used by families throughout the district who need to be near
a birthing facility because of complications with a pregnancy or after birth when their baby is sick or premature and receiving care in the Special Care Baby Unit. It is a most valuable asset that is constantly used as a home away from home so that mothers especially can be near their baby. Some mums spend weeks or months there. The cost of the upgrade has been estimated at around $38,000 and the Nelson Host Lions Club has called in other Lions clubs in the region, including the Nelson Lioness Club, to help them reach the total. Tuesday August 27 A local who told the Nelson Weekly that snapper happy fishermen are too greedy will be pleased with the announcement that quota will remain unchanged for the next fishing year. Commercial fisheries who had their hearts set on an increase however, will be disappointed. The 2013 - 2014 fishing year officially starts today and Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy has announced that he will leave the snapper quota in the top of the south unchanged. The total allowable commercial catch will remain at 306 tonnes for snapper area 7, and the recreational Challenger area that includes Nelson will stay the same too. This will include keeping the sub-limit of 3 snapper that can be taken from the Marlborough Sounds as it is, with no increase to a proposed quota of 5 going ahead.

As your councillor, I want to ensure: - Affordable rates. - Transparency of Council activities. - Keep Nelson a vibrant place for local business. - Ensure Nelson is an affordable place to live & bring up a family. - A fresh perspective & 100% commitment to the role. - Ensure Council’s core responsibilities are its priority. - A strong voice for Nelson citizens My burning issue promise: Fireplaces I will strongly advocate for the fair use of enclosed log burners in your home. Burning of dry wood in an efficient operating log burner is a very effective, healthy, and efficient way of heating your home. The legislation brought in 10 years ago is having a growing detrimental effect on Nelsonian’s health and financial wellbeing. Heating and cooking in your own home is a fundamental necessity. I promise to pursue to change this current restrictive legislation during my term if elected as your councillor. For more info visit www.TimSkinner.com

Larry's been cutting Les' hair for 50 years When Larry Sutherland left school at 16 to be a barber his first ever client was a boot maker from the shop right next door. Last week, and 50 years on, Larry is still cutting Les Sangster’s hair. Larry says when he started at Ted Wilkes Barber Shop on the Rutherford St end of Hardy St the barber shop was a busy place but he always remembered his first haircut. Les was in his mid-thirties and was about to buy the boot maker business he worked in off the Smith brothers. They say Nelson city was a different place back then. “There were about 50 Barbers around in those days,” says Larry. “After about ten or 15 years that went down to about half a dozen because the Beatles came out in ’63 and everyone wanted long hair and they all went to women’s hairdressers.” He says the barber shop was a meeting place for men and often there would be eight or nine men waiting for a haircut on a Friday night while their wives shopped in the city. He says for men who didn’t like to drink in the pubs, the barber

shop was a place they could meet, talk and even play pool. Les says being a boot maker was a busy business 50 years ago, making and mending shoes for people all over the district. They even made all the shoes for the hospital and had to make three shoes at a time for amputees because one shoe would wear through so much quicker than the other. Les’ haircut hasn’t changed much over the decades says Larry but the friendship has certainly developed. “We’ve talked about all sorts over the years and when I came back to being a barber 15 years ago Les was one of the first that was back in my chair. I should be able to cut his hair blindfolded by now,” he joked. Les wasn't too keen for Larry to give it a go but says he trusts him so much he doesn't even tell him want he wants, he just lets Larry go for it. He says he can't imagine having another barber. “I think I've got him for life. If I don't like what he does by now it's a bit late to say so.”

Garin wins ‘AquaBot’ comp Building robots and guiding them through underwater obstacles and completing a series of tasks could see a group of Garin Students travel to the United States for more competition, after Team Nautilus beat eight other school teams at the inaugural NZAquaBots Challenge. The winning team of Julia Froeling, Molly Inman, Finlay Langelaan, and Harry Woodyear-Smith have the option of participating in the SeaPerch National Challenge – which is where the robots originate – after winning the first competition at the ASB Aquatic Centre last weekend. Jay Inman, a teacher at Garin College, is the man behind bringing
aqua bots to New Zealand. He was involved in a similar project through SeaPerch in the States and brought some kits with him to Nelson in the hope of it kicking off here. Each team is given a kit with the same items in it. From that the students must follow a manual to construct the aqua bots. After the success of last weekend’s inter-school event, Jay is hoping to see aquabots spread around the country. “Nelson is a bit of guinea pig for us, but this is where we live and it’ll be a Ministry of Inspiration programme and the home base for NZAquaBots will definitely be in Nelson.”

Locals walk with charity Sinead Ogilvie Reporter

Local school children who spent a cold winter going without adequate footwear will soon benefit from the kindness of strangers. Walk with Us, the new local charitable trust whose mission is to provide free school and sports footwear and socks to children in need, is already garnering huge support just a few months into their project. Following discussions with local schools and teachers, the trust has eight local schools signed up to join the early pilot programme, including Victory, Richmond and Wakefield primary schools. Already local business owners and organisations have jumped on board and shown their support, including Dave and Sandy Heywood of Stirling Sports. The duo are donating generously to the Walk with Us cause, providing a great discount once the trust is in a position to begin providing funds for

The charity is currently gearing up to host their first ever fundraising event in a bid to get the ball rolling for local kids in need. They will host an auction at the end of this month with the hope of raising the money needed to make a difference. Walk with Us trustee Anne-Marie Teece says the auction is a great way to begin the fundraising journey for the trust and she is looking forward to a good turnout. The auction will feature products and services that
have been donated from local businesses and will be held on Saturday October 29, at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms in Richmond. Drinks, canapés, cash and eftpos available. The South Island Masters Games is back in Nelson and the fun kicks off this Saturday. This is a highly anticipated annual festival of sport and sports clubs from all over the region are proud to be hosting it once more. Running for nine days straight, it is a chance for athletes at all levels and abilities to compete in more than 50 different sports. Most sports have both competitive and social grades so you don't have to be a top performer or even a current competitor to enter. There are no qualification criteria - athletes don’t need to be nominated or to represent a club. Anyone can enter – as long as they are old enough. Most sports take entries from age 30 or 35 and upwards. More than 2000 sportspeople have entered into this year’s event, and half of those are from outside the Nelson region. This will be the second time Nelson has hosted the popular games and just two years ago close to 3000 athletes competed, making it one of the biggest sporting events in the country. New for this year is the Masters Games Village marquee. The organisers have taken previous feedback on board and this year all social functions will be held at the Games Village at Saxton Field. Besides the sporting activities, which usually take place during the day, you'll get an unforgettable party atmosphere. The social programme will cater for all tastes with themed entertainment nights featuring live perfor-

Go Live ‘Real Time’ is about to become the reality for our Container Yard and Stevedoring Services. These areas have been the last at the port still waging the ‘paper war’, but that’s about to change. Port Logistics Manager Digby Kynaston says it’s a big step and one that has not been taken lightly.
Tasman welcomes the Masters Games athletes “We are very keen to move to real time for our tracking of container movements, but it has taken a lot of and their support crews. Relax and enjoy planning, visits to other ports and close liaison with our Jade software suppliers to get it just right,” he says. “There will be big gains in efficiency - we’ll be able to significantly reduce unproductive container the very best our District moves, get the best use out of plant, improve yard planning, complete reports for customers faster, has to offer. produce progress reports and reduce administration time.” With the planning that has gone in, plus staff training, Digby is confident the transition as we ‘Go Live’ will be seamless. Christopher Allen and Ann Wells look forward to having a ‘hand-held’ to read from on a wet and windy night rather than a sheaf of papers.

A unique concept in Community Education and Welfare Ph 0800 843 635 www.thenelsonark.co.nz The Nelson Ark is turning five, an amazing achievement for such a unique concept in community education and welfare – that is all about second chances. Recognising the healing power of contact with animals, the Nelson Ark delivers educational, rehabilitative programmes to youth at risk of losing their way. Paired with rescued, unwanted and abused dogs, the youth complete a programme that every step of the way slowly heals their heart, as well as their canine companion. Co-founder Karen Howieson says the success of the APART programme is hugely rewarding and the highlight over the years has been watching the change in each young person who completes it. “It is actually really nice to reflect. Seeing the way it has changed the lives of these young people and the dogs involved is incredible.” To date 95 at risk youth have completed the course alongside 95 dogs. That is 95 young members of the Nelson community who are no longer lost, scared, Professional Dog Training Instructor anxious with no hopes or aspirations for the future, but

are now confident, self respecting, happy, and have come out the other side. And that goes for the dogs too. The dogs are trained in readiness for a forever home by Sue Walsh and Jo Turton, assistant dog trainer and co-facilitator ‘Healing Species’ - a proven and effective programme based on compassion and empathy. The end of this month will see another Nelson ARK graduation, where each of the currently participating youth will receive their accolades for completing APART. Their canines will each be adopted out to a loving, caring home. Up until a year ago the trust had no formal home, making achieving their big dreams for the organisation tough. But 12 months ago Suzanne and Laurence Max, the owners of Stonehurst Farm offered the perfect setting. Spacious, rural and fitting with their vision to eventually rehabilitate different animals and introduce them to the APART programme, it was the perfect solution. Throughout the journey, Karen has been amazed at the local support given and the

• Peter and I have an idyllic lifestyle. For exactly half of each week we live in sunny Nelson. We are renting a sunny flat, overlooking the Matai River, where we enjoy watching dogs of all shapes and sizes, taking their faithful owners for a walk or run, whatever the case may be. We are enjoying the steady weather, and love the contours of the land in the province. And believe it or not we don’t have to do any gardening around the flat. For the other half of the week, we live in our hometown of Blenheim, in a house that is surrounded by a large garden, that I have developed over the past 20 years. • The first thing that I do, on our arrival home, is to take a walk in the garden. It is always interesting to see how the garden changes during our absences. This last week it has been magical. I love my garden and the way it has “growed” itself over the years. I don’t continually rush about trimming things left right and centre, but prefer to let the plants decide for themselves how they would like to grow. As a result of this cunning idea, shrubs tend to link leaves and branches together, thus creating an easy care garden that is always good to look at and enjoy. • So when I made my recent visitation it was a delight. The flowering cherries are in full flower and sometimes drop a shower of bridal petals on the pathways. The Loropetalums of which there is a good collection [I collect plants instead of stamps] are performing well, showing off their display of foliage ranging from soft greens to deep reds and even purple. Unusual spidery flowers ranging from cream through to pink and red depending on the variety are liberally dotted through the leaves.
• Michelias are in full flag, creating a contrast of flower shapes to compliment the fine blossom of the cherries. Michelias usually flower in creams and whites but I have one called Patons Pink with lovely pink blooms. They are most suitable for the small garden and fragrant too. • Viburnums are starting to produce lovely cream and pink flower bracts. When in full force, they are a sight to behold. Some flower in the style of a lacecap hydrangea, and others follow the mopcap shape. • Underneath all of this, grow Solomon's Seal [Polygonatum] with white dangling blobs on arching stems. And Dicentra spectabilis [Ladies Locket] both pink and white forms. And here is a little trick you might like to use, if you have just bought one. Leave the plant in the pot. Dig a whole where you want the plant to grow. Place the plant still in the pot, in the hole, cover with soil, and there you are! Later on, you can go back and do the job properly when the plant has finished flowering. A bit of cheating yes. This is OK in the garden, but never, never on water! • Violets do a grand job acting as a ground cover but look better if cleared around the base of trees and shrubs. And Lilly of the Valley, both pink and white are pushing through nicely, and sit nicely with red and white trilliums. • If you haven’t got your potatoes in, then you had better get a wriggle on! Time is running out. And get the vege garden ready for a big splurge in October. Fork the bed over, and work in organic matter or compost to give substance for the plants. There is a busy time ahead, and very rewarding as well. Catch you later.

Nelson South swimmers make history Phillip Rollo Reporter
editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz On the back of a hugely successful winter swimming season, the Nelson South Swimming Club is sending its largest team to the Short Course National Swimming Championships being held in Wellington this week. Twelve swimmers from Nelson South have qualified to swim at the prestigious swimming event which marks the end of the national winter swimming calendar. This is the largest squad the club has ever sent to a national event and makes up more than half of the Nelson Marlborough representative team. Many of the country’s elite swimmers will be representing their clubs during the five day event. The Nelson South team comprises a squad of dedicated teenagers who have been training and competing hard throughout the winter months, and many have high hopes for the event. Ellie Rukuwai, 15, who has been swimming at a national level since the age of 10 hopes to medal in her specialist breaststroke and medley events. Pip Dwyer, 15, has qualified for eight events and is an up and coming middle distance freestyler. She

Photo: Phillip Rollo. is ranked second for the 200m free and third for 400m free so is a strong medal contender for these events. Both Ellie and Pip have also been honoured by being selected to represent the Southern Zone in the NZ Interzonal Competition being held after the National Short Course meet. The duo will be joined by Sam McKenzie of the Nelson Swimming Club at that event. Sam Trevurza, 14, is hoping for a repeat performance of last year when she won a
bronze in the 50m backstroke event, Clara Foster, 14, finished fourth in the 50m and 100m breaststroke events at the Long Course Nationals earlier in the year and is aiming to finish on the podium. Amy Coulton, 15, is a long distance specialist who finished fifth in the 800m at Long Course this year and has also qualified for the 200m and 400m freestyle events, Bailee Spriggs, 15, and Luke Kelly, 16, will both be swimming at their first top tier national event and are excited to have the oppor-
tunity to swim with the best in their age groups. Also of particular note are the Neill siblings, Fraser, Eddie and Libby, all three of whom will be swimming at this event. Fraser, 17, has qualified for nine events and will be concentrating on 200m freestyle. This is also his last national meet before heading to university. Eddie, 16, is aiming for top ten placings in four of his nine events, the 400m and 200m medley as well as the 400m and 1500m freestyle. Libby, 14, will be joining her brothers in what is her first top level national event. Georgie Trengrove, at 13 years old, is the club’s youngest qualifier, but due to prior commitments is unable to make the meet while Grace Woodall, the oldest squad member in her last year as an age group swimmer, has an illness that has kept her out of the pool. At a final pre-meet training session at Riverside Pool, coach Tim Loach labelled the rise in national competitors as a "great achievement" for the club. “We are a small club with very limited water space and resources, yet we consistently punch above our weight," he says. "We're lucky that we've got 35 kids in this club that are very competitive and very focussed. They've got good support from their families and enjoy the atmosphere we have in our club."

Makos odds on for Blenheim semi
If the Tasman Makos beat Waikato tomorrow night, the chances of hosting an ITM Cup Championship semi-final will be all but sealed. The only problem is a potential semi-final will be held in Blenheim, meaning the only way Nelson fans will see another Makos match at Trafalgar Park beyond this Wednesday's fixture is if they can ensure a home final – fortunately that is becoming a real possibility. The Makos have been playing so well this season that they are on top of the ITM Cup Championship standings by two points and still have one more game in hand. They are also the bookie's favourites to win the competition, the TAB has them at $2.25 with Southland and Otago back on $5. And don't forget the Super 15 champions the Chiefs are snapping up our stars with flanker Liam Squire the latest to earn a full-time professional gig, joining Tom Marshall in Hamilton. Currently sitting on 22 points after seven games with just two losses against their name, Tasman could move out to 26 points if they win, or 27 if they win with a bonus point, against a Waikato side perched on just 12 points in the Premiership. While the numbers may confuse some, as does the midweek fixtures, Tasman certainly has the easiest run in to the playoffs out of

the Championship contenders, and whether they are on 22 points or 26 points at 9:30pm on Wednesday night, they will still be on top at the end of round seven. Winnable games against Taranaki in New Plymouth and Manawatu in Blenheim then follow, and there's no reason to suggest Tasman can't win all three, which would be a huge confidence booster going into a playoff series against teams they had already beaten. The other teams gunning for a semi-final spot are Hawke's Bay (20 points), Southland (20 points), Otago (16 points with a game in hand), and Manawatu (10 points.) Hawke's Bay and Southland play on Thursday night while the Magpies end the regular season against top of the Premiership Wellington. Southland, on the other hand, have an in-form Counties Manakau to contest in a Ranfurly Shield clash. Otago, whose average season could be hidden by a short Shield stint, still have three games to play but their inconsistency means matches against the far north trio of North Harbour, Northland and Auckland are no guarantees. Tomorrow's game kicks off at 7:35pm at Trafalgar Park.

Bringing America’s favourite sport to Nelson Mark Rais isn’t here to convert. In fact, he will happily admit that he loves rugby too. But his grand plan is to get Nelson youth into his favourite sport – American football. Often regarded as a physical, brutal sport – just look at the protection they wear – Mark is bringing the Junior Rippa Gridiron League to Saxton Field, bypassing the high contact from where it gets its reputation. “This is just like rippa rugby,” Mark, the competition’s head coach explains. “There’s no physical tackling. You use the belts and pull off the flag which indicates the person is down.” While most winter sports have now concluded, Mark believes it is the perfect time to start the competition, as it will give

Congratulations to Warren at Made for Men on your new look store
6 McGlashen Ave, Richmond Ph 544 6746 or 0800 226 228 Locally owned and operated
The team at Made for Men on Queen St from left Lyn Guyton, Warren Ludemann and Mary McClelland. Get ready for summer, update your wardrobe and call in to congratulate Warren Ludemann, Lyn Guyton and Mary McLellan on the brand new look at Made for Men in Queen Street , Richmond . Things couldn’t be better at Made for Men at the moment. Flood damage from April has finally been repaired, new season stock is arriving thick and fast and a fresh new look has been unveiled at the store. Extensive flood damage to the floors and some of the walls has been repaired and despite the obvious downside, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Warren had been entertaining the idea of changing the look of the store but hadn’t fully committed to it until the opportunity arose to start afresh. The spring summer range is currently being unpacked and you will need to get in quick to get the best of the selection. From basics, casuals, business or play, you will only need to shop at Made for men this summer. From short sleeve, cotton casual shirts, bright colours
in short and long sleeves, paisley prints, stripes, checks and more the selection is a mixed bag with something to suit each individual. New suits, leather belts and contemporary and classic ties and a brand new underwear range are also available. Gone are the days when fashion was limited to what was on trend. Warren says the variety he consistently stocks in store is one of the reasons his customers leave so well dressed. Warren also has a great collection of formal wear and suit hire, a great choice for school balls, weddings or any black tie dress code. Warren offers tailoring options if you need to make a few adjustments to your purchase and is also the local agent for Master Valet Drycleaners and Laundry. Check out Made for Men’s new look and let them help you with yours. They are open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5.30 pm and Saturday from 9am to 1pm.
