New Orleans-style party band to rock Riwaka Hotel

Aotearoa’s first and finest New Orleans second-line band Richter City Rebels are on the road again for their annual summer tour through the Top of the South, with the Riwaka Hotel their destination this Thursday, 21 January.

Revellers will be able to enjoy the band’s signature beats and feelgood vibe. The Richter City Rebels music is heavy and soulful. Blending RnB, soul, hip-hop, jazz and funk, it grooves deeply and pulsates with pound-

ing bass and searing bass.

Catchy vocal and chants draw the crowd into the party and the rolling, infectious sound is punctuated by the fierce crack of drums and percussion. The music has the soul and charisma of James Brown, mixed with the effortless swagger of Big Daddy Kane. When it hits you, you can’t help but dance!

Despite being pretty spoiled for choice over summer they come out and have a huge enthusiasm for the music. Rebels have been doing this tour since 2015 and we have some diehard fans in the region now,” says Jake.

Incorporating stylish

original melodies and shouts, funked-up pop tunes and bouncing hip-hop, the Rebels sound embodies the musical melting pot of Louisiana.

Their energetic show has headlined at events including the Wellington Jazz Festival, Taranaki Arts Festival and the National Jazz Festival.

Each month crowds line up for their monthly residency at popular Wellington venues Havana and The Rogue and Vagabond and at many other venues they visit nationwide.

With energy, entertainment and musicianship of the highest quality The Richter City Rebels guarantee a rousing New Orleans experience, so prepare yourself for a big joyful and juicy plate of strong, rich New Orleans fire.

Nelson Suter Art Society award for ex-MHS student

With 2020 proving to be an extraordinary year, the 12 final year Bachelor of Arts and Media students at NMIT (Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology) were in a race against time to complete their projects for the end of year exhibition and their graduation.

Motueka’s Georgia Elliston was among the students who had all their hard work pay off when tutors, students, family and friends came together on Friday, 11 December to celebrate the exhibition’s opening and witness the awards. “We are very proud of what our students have achieved in a year that no one could’ve predicted.

As ever, our students have delivered a unique and diverse range of art including

a cookbook from a book designer, digital illustrations, packaging design, paintings, prints and a number of art installations using a range of modalities,” says NMIT Senior Studio Coordinator, Catharine Salmon.

Announced on the evening were the winners of three distinction awards for studio practice and Georgia was “shocked” to learn that together with sculptor Andy Robertson she’d scooped the Nelson Suter Art Society Award.

“I am so grateful, to be recognised for a means of expression so important to me is an experience unlike any other,” says Georgia. “It’s a mix of relief and sadness when coming to the end of a three-year degree, so to have been given the oppor-

tunity to make the move from study into the world and reflect on some of what I’ve been working on over the years has made this process easier, as much as I want to view the glass as half full, the practicality of an arts degree in the real world is limited, so this opportunity is priceless in itself.”

Citing the course’s “amazing” opportunities leading to opportunities for further growth, Georgia says the exhibition was a chance to experience a real world critique.

“Eclectic and unique are words I heard a lot from viewers during the course of the exhibition, not to say these are positive or negative but they hold certain connotations that don’t gel so well with mainstream art, so in regards to this I was

surprised at how well received they were.”

It’s the freedom and creativity of painting that Georgia relishes and she says she personally puts it down to an experience exclusively between painter and painting.

Constantly finding herself inspired her phone gallery is filled with screenshots of imagery she intends to explore in future works. “I guess that’s the 21st century version of mood boards and brainstorming. I also get inspiration from people, literature and other works.”

Georgia’s degree was made possible after she received the McKee Scholarship from Motueka High School and she says she’s “full of gratitude” to anybody who may have been responsible for her nomination.

Mid-summer quilts in Motueka

The popular midsummer quilt exhibition returns this week with a wide-variety of quilts on display in St Thomas’s Anglican Church Auditorium from Thursday through to Saturday.

Up to 80 quilts and wall-hangings of various sizes made by quilters from the topof-the-south will be accompanied by those of guest exhibitor Juliet Fitness.

In the 1960’s and 70’s Juliet dabbled in English paper-piercing, but her real quilting life started in 1983 in Auckland when she found a book on machine piercing. Her first quilt was a Log cabin and she still enjoys that block. While mostly selftaught from books, Juliet attended two pivotal workshops –Afro-American quilts with Sue Weston (1994) and paperfoundation piecing the New York Beauty block with Donna Ward (2000). Two very different techniques but both have been a big influence on her quilting life. She prefers piecing to quilting, doing all of the latter

with a walking foot. Juliet mostly makes wall-hangings as she prefers working small. She loves bright colours, black, the “wonderful” New Zealand fabrics and has a reputation for collecting and using fabric selvedges – a true recycler! Juliet enjoys making traditional, or traditional with a twist wall-hangings, but also innovative or arty ones, often attaching art quilts to artists’ canvases.

A quilt competition junkie for the past 30 years, who particularly likes using a challenge fabric and the ensuing challenges, Juliet works best to a deadline. She has lost track of how many competitions she’s entered, well over 100, with numerous entries in the Hoffman Challenge (winner Best Contemporary 2010, plus 3 Merit Prizes), World Quilt and Textile in the States, the last seven Symposium Exhibitions, Quilts Aotearoa and NANZQ/ Aotearoa Quilters’ challenges, NZ National Traditional Design Quilt Challenge, plus several wearable art

competitions, winning prizes in quite a few.

Juliet has been honoured to be a judge at Auckland Quilt Guild’s Calico Christmas (now Festival of Quilts), Braided Ribbons mini symposium and twice at Waikato Guild’s Calling All Quilts. Also exhibiting will be award-winning Nelson artist, Ronnie

Martin. She is a textile and mixed media artist working in our region and between 2006 and 2018 she was part of an executive committee of Arts Council Nelson which is responsible for promoting the arts in Nelson and the wider area.

Challenge pieces from the Marlborough

Quilters 2020 show will also be on display.

Motueka Library to host candid poet

On Wednesday, 27 January at 6pm Jess Fiebig (pictured right) will visit the Motueka Library to read her poetry, discuss her book, ‘My Honest Poem’, and host a Q & A session.

Jess’s poetry is a candid collection of her experiences with family and domestic violence, issues of abandonment, anxiety, sex, love and dislocation.

The collection of poems is often graphic and heart-breaking following her recovery from a tough upbringing.

“Writing poetry has helped me with healing. When you write about the experiences you take the power back and reframe them,” says Jess.

A nationally-recognised poet her writing has featured in journals such as Aotearotica, Best

New Zealand Poems, Catalyst, Landfall, takahe, Turbine, Poetry New Zealand Yearbook and in 2019 she was runner-up in the 2019 Sarah Broom Poetry Prize.

My Honest Poem was published by Auckland University Press in August 2020.

“These poems are undeniably personal and often deeply painful: childhood neglect, abuse, alcoholism, physical hurt, depression and self-harm are their subject matter. But – through linguistic skill and sheer intelligence – Fiebig crafts a lyrical beauty from unpromising material.

You finish reading her work feeling uplifted by the writer’s courage and honesty,” says reviewer, Fiona Farrell.

Jess will have copies of her book available for $25 cash.

Police Report

Hi All,

Hope the Christmas and New Year treated you all well. Great that there are a lot of NZ tourists around our district – long may that last! In the last couple of weeks there have been four burglaries of houses and a shed both in Motueka and rural. There have unfortunately been several drink drivers apprehended – people sometimes refuse to accept responsibility for planning ahead when they are drinking which is crazy. It is very irresponsible and dangerous when driving. We also had a spate of shoplifting – quite a bit of it by one person who has been arrested for stealing many hundreds of dollars’ worth of goods. Recently traffic staff did a speed operation in the Queen Victoria Street and King Edward Street area early morning about 6am. One day 11 tickets were issued for doing speeds well over the posted speed limit of 50 km/hr. The big lesson here is don’t speed around town even when there is no other traffic around. Take care out there and enjoy the summer.

Nelson Tasman’s got more of this!

Bigger and better than last time, the Nelson Tasman Summer Adventure Challenge is back, and it’s all about doing something new, supporting local businesses and exploring the region over the Summer break.

The first challenge in September was played by over 800 people in the region, with almost 5,000 challenges completed. Everyone who plays the Adventure Challenge is eligible to win one of the many fantastic prizes along with the main prize package, which was won by Kelly from Nelson who completed 38 of 50 challenges over the September/ October school holidays in a team with her two kids.

The updated Nelson Tasman Summer Adventure Challenge focuses on encouraging players to explore new places, try new things and discover the regions’ hidden gems – as well as re-visit some old favourites. This time there are 100 different challenges designed for all kinds of explorers. Whether they are completed as part of a team or individually there are over $7,000 worth of epic prizes up for grabs and more than one chance to win.

The Nelson Tasman Summer Adventure Challenge has been supported by over 40 local businesses who have provided prizes and gives exposure to many more through the range of activities suggested such as browsing the markets, attending an event, taking a scenic tour, visiting boutique shops, eating out and making a picnic with local products etc. There is even a challenge to see the natural flames that burn eternally on the forest floor in Murchison!

While Nelson Tasman is a popular visitor destination during summer, this is an opportunity for locals to use the Nelson Tasman Summer Adventure Challenge to rediscover the region and become a visitor in their own town.

“The last Adventure Challenge saw an incredible uptake, with the majority of challenges completed by

locals. Some people included their visiting family and friends as a chance to show off the region. We’re assuming that a lot of locals will stay put this summer, and the Nelson Tasman Summer Adventure Challenge allows them to experience new things in their own backyard,” says campaign project lead Ali Boswijk. “Why would we want to be anywhere else this summer when our region has wonderful weather, so many great things to do, cafes and restaurants, and stunning places to enjoy!”

The Nelson Tasman Summer Adventure Challenge went live at midday on Thursday, 17 December 2020 and will run for an extended timeframe of 10 weeks until 11pm on Sunday, 28 February 2021, giving players the opportunity to tick even more challenges off! All prizes will be drawn on Monday, 1 March 2021.

The updated Summer Adventure Challenge follows the same rules where every challenge you complete earns you entries into the draw for the main $2,500 prize. There are also over $4,500 worth of additional spot prizes up for grabs for those who complete individual challenges.

You don’t have to complete all of them to be in the running, but the more challenges you tick off, the more points you’ll earn (and the more fun you’ll have!).

How to get involved in the updated Nelson Tasman Adventure Challenge:

1. Download the Goosechase App on your phone and create an account.

2. Enter the unique game code B5ZR9E to join the challenge.

3. Create your team - or select your team from the list if it’s already been created. If you’re playing individually, just enter your name.

4. After joining the game, you’ll be taken to the challenge list.

5. Now the fun begins - start completing challenges and earning points!

Big Tiny House EXPO -2021

Interest is sky high in this first event of its kind!!

Mayor Tim King will be opening the eight week EXPO on Saturday, 6 February at a lunch-time ceremony. Open for eight weeks over the summer, free to the public (koha welcome). Family friendly fun from 10am to 7.30pm daily.

Try a Tiny on for size and learn about the benefits of living with a lighter more sustainable footprint on the land.

A chance to see homes and innovative, sustainable technologies in action. Waterless toilets, turning waste into BioGas for cooking and heating and much more aimed at reducing our impact on natural resources and our dependence on already stretched public infrastructure systems.

Energy sponsor GridShare, is providing an on-site independent system, powering the entire event completely off-grid and primary sponsor Stopdigging Ltd will be demonstrating their eco-friendly screw piers.

A Hui Centre is the heart of the event, bringing together voices from all sectors of the Tiny Home industry and the community. Hosting speakers, public meetings and workshops on a range of topics; from sustainable land use to providing an affordable legal path to home sites to rent.

Attracting home builders, design pioneers and longtime campaigners for the Tiny House movement. Meet Bryce Langston of You Tube fame. “Living Big In a Tiny House”. https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCoNTMWgGuXtGPLv9UeJZwBw

Largely community driven, organised by a few dedicated volunteers, the event has grown rapidly and the organisers are now in need of more volunteers on-site.

“If you are interested in Tiny Homes and able to help for a half a day or for the duration, we need help to spread the load a little - from muscles to help raise the Hui Centre first week February, to dust monitors, parking supervisors, and hosts for the Hui Centre and visitor welcome desk.”

World famous right here in Motueka

It’s officially been a decade since renowned local family business Tasman Canvas set up their workshop in Motueka. From their origins of Rowan creating tents in his back yard to becoming an international award winning business it’s been quite a journey. We sat down with Rowan’s wife Monique, Manager and co-owner of Tasman Canvas to find out more about their unique story.

Rowan started sewing in 1989 and continued on to gain a Diploma in Tailoring and Design. In 1999 he drew on this valuable skill set to transition into tent making. Rowan went on to set up Origin Tents Ltd, manufacturing unique canvas tents for festivals and events. His incredible creations proved extremely popular.

Monique with her background in environmental science, management and education joined forces with Rowan in 2011. The hard working couple then made the move into Motueka town to set up their specialised workshop before transitioning to their current location on the corner of Poole Street and High Street.

In 2013 they received an Award of Excellence from the Outdoor Fabric Products Association of New Zealand (OFPANZ). As well as an International Achievement Award from IFAI for their council approved semi-permanent dwelling based on the Mongolian yurt or ger.

2017 saw more awards with recognition by OFPANZ of their bespoke Tussock Bell tent for a glamping site in Southland.

Both Rowan and Monique actively encourage people to explore the possibility of joining the industry and are happy to visit local schools to give talks about their craft. Should you be interested in textile work, drop into Tasman Canvas and have a chat to find out more.

They would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank-you to the Tasman region for supporting their start-up business, from being brave enough to give them a go in the beginning phases in the old sheds that stood where the NPD does now, through to 10 years on as the majority of their product is custom made for the local community.

Locals supporting locals!

Monique and Rowan, owner/operators of Tasman Canvas

Meet the team

Tasman Canvas has a core team of five impressive individuals all with their own unique capabilities, let’s find out a bit more about the team.

Rowan – Co-founder of Tasman Canvas, Rowan is an extraordinary tent designer and crafter. He describes his work as a cross between engineering and sewing and thoroughly enjoys coming up with new designs and products. Rowan knowledge and input spans the whole business but his main manufacturing focus is tent making and boat work.

“This is the area that utilises Rowans skill set the best,” explains Monique.

“Boat covers are custom made, each boat requires a different pattern to ensure the perfect fit. Rowan with his tailoring and design abilities uses his transferable skills to create long lasting professional results.”

Monique – Co-owner Monique takes care of managing Tasman Canvas alongside Rowan. She is well versed in organisation and keeps everything in order, making life easier for both customers and staff. Monique has a genuine passion for the environment and currently takes a day a week whenever possible to work on a wetland restoration project. Giving back to the community is important to Monique and Rowan who donate textile off-cut’s to preschools, MOTEC and Motueka High School.

Phoenix – Your first point of contact at Tasman Canvas is Phoenix. Phoenix has been with the team for almost two years and has a background in hospitality so she really knows how to look after people. She’s a friendly individual whose knowledge of the products and textiles at Tasman Canvas continues to grow.

Harley – With a background as a machinist in the fashion industry Harley knows what it takes to create high quality workmanship. This talented machinist does a lot of squab work, crafting indoor and outdoor comfort across the region. What is trust? With Anisy’s it is knowing that from the time you make that initial phone call and speak with Val, Val is the only person you deal with consistently. All the way through your time of need you deal with the owner and operator of this small personalised funeral and cremation service. You can trust that you don’t have to deal with whoever is on duty over that period.

Val prides herself that in a lot of cases, she is the person who “is met as a stranger and walks out as a friend”. She is frequently invited for a coffee & chat with future and past families. Val chooses not to advertise a lot using referrals and recommendations with her care and service as her advertising.

Being semi-retired Val chooses to continue helping families because of her love of helping people through loss. Since Val started she has retained her prices and not undercut pricing (and service) to attract business.

You can trust this is a local company that doesn’t operate under different names and isn’t an overseas chain. Trust Val - Sure Can!

Keep an eye out for Black & Orange catering at local events or go and visit them today at 20 Aranui Road in Mapua and discover for yourself what makes their food both exceptional and delicious.

Find out more online, at blackandorange-catering.nz

If you’ve attended a festival, A&P Show or other large event recently no doubt you would have noticed the distinctive Black & Orange Catering food trucks in attendance. Local couple Darius and Manuela have combined their skills to offer our region the very best of their talents. And the best news, you don’t have to wait for the next local event to enjoy their cuisine. Make your way to 20 Aranui Rd in Mapua and you’ll find their delicious smoked meats among other choices, waiting to be devoured.

Darius is a skilled builder and Manuela a chef, together they run Black and Orange Catering, one of the largest mobile caterers in the Top of the South. With his love for timber Darius used his skills to craft their impressive food trucks.

Their passion for BBQ and Manuela’s culinary talents are fast becoming legendary in our district using the freshest local ingredients to create a wide range of mouth-watering treats. From rolled ice cream to delicious beef brisket and pulled pork there is something for everyone. But it’s their smoked meats that is creating much interest and satisfying hungry tummies across our region.

Black Forest smoked ham

Manuela has drawn on her German background to perfect the art of creating Black Forest smoked ham which

literally melts in your mouth. For those unfamiliar with Black Forest smoked ham, it’s a very special involved technique.

Traditionally made in the Black Forest region of Germany raw ham is salted and seasoned with garlic, coriander, pepper, juniper berries and other spices. After curing for a few weeks, the salt is removed and the ham aged. The meat is then cold-smoked for several days. As a result Black Forest ham has a distinctive dark coloured rind.

To get your hands on this delectable product, head to 20 Aranui Road in Mapua and pick up a vacuum packed package of Black Forest ham to enjoy at your convenience.

Catering for all occasions

Whether it is a simple meeting, a big festival, a festive occasion, wedding or a BBQ, Black & Orange have all of the equipment, a flexible selection of mobile food carts, great staff and great food that has made Black & Orange legendary. Their extensive menu of global cuisine will please even the most discerning clients.

Let the team at Black & Orange help organise a menu for your next event. They allow you the option of having prepared food delivered to your function or have their food trucks in attendance to make your event particularly memorable.

Smart improvements to freshen up your living space and add value to your home

Planning home improvements can help you create a more comfortable and appealing living space, while also increasing space and efficiency. Along with enhancing your lifestyle, simple home upgrades can also boost your property’s value and help you maximize your return if you decide to sell. The New Year is the ideal time to complete home upgrades and freshen up living space. Listed below are some smart home improvements to consider this year.

Modernise your kitchen

The kitchen is one of the most popular areas of the home to renovate. This is because it is the room where most families spend the majority of their time together cooking or eating meals. A major kitchen remodel may be outside of your budget, but there are many affordable ways to modernize your kitchen.

A fast way to freshen up an outdated kitchen is by replacing your flooring. Replacing your flooring can have a huge impact and help you create a more functional and stylish kitchen. If you have the budget available, then replacing old cabinets and countertops can be a great way to modernize your kitchen. Although, you can achieve a similar effect using budget-friendly backsplash tiles or vinyl wrapping.

At the same time, you may wish to consider replacing old kitchen appliances with newer, more energy-efficiency models. This will improve the overall appeal of your kitchen and save you money on energy bills.

g uardian the 22 WEDNESDAY 20 JANUARY 2021

Install outdoor decking

Don’t forget about the outside of your home when you’re planning renovations. Improving your outdoor space can have a big impact on your lifestyle through encouraging your family to spend more time outside. Installing outdoor decking is a popular home improvement that will add aesthetic appeal to your home exterior and create a comfortable outdoor space to entertain family and friends.

Renovate your attic or basement

If you’re up for a major renovation project, you may want to consider converting your attic or basement. There are multiple ways you can renovate attics and basements to fulfil their potential.

For entertainment purposes, contemplate building a games room, maybe a home cinema or perhaps a workspace for a budding artist or home crafter. A renovated attic can become an additional bedroom, perfect for a teenager or when guests come to stay.

Energy-Efficient home improvements

If you are looking to reduce your electricity bills while increasing your home value, there are a few small-scale improvements you can make, as well as some large scale ones. These projects can vary in scope and price. For instance, updating your lighting from incandescent light bulbs to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs is a cheap project that will only require a few minutes of your time.

On the other hand, replacing old appliances with energy-efficient ones may be a bit more expensive, but

doing so will be well worth it. For example, dishwashers that are more than 20 years old waste litres of water during each cycle. By purchasing a newer model, you can conserve water and save money on your water bills. You’ll reap similar benefits by purchasing other Energy Star appliances like washing machines and fridges, too. More substantial updates may cost a bit more upfront but definitely add the most value. Solar panels are one such update.

Install bi-fold doors

Installing bi-fold doors provides a stunning contemporary environment which you can enjoy alone or with friends. Unlike traditional patio doors that slide one behind the other, bi-fold doors collapse in onto itself, completely opening up the wall and creating more spac. Bi-fold doors create a seamless connection between the interior of your home and the garden. The most popular choices are to extend the kitchen to create an outdoor dining area or to extend the living room with an outdoor space.

Lake trail run to sell out again

Not many running events sell out annually but the Alpine Lodge Loop the Lake continues to buck this trend and is on track to do it again on Saturday, 17 April.

With over 200 already registered and a capacity of 400, Nelson Events, Abbe West expects to post the “Sold Out Sign” soon for the enticing 25km lap of pristine Lake Rotoiti.

It’s an ideal introduction for those wanting to foot it in

an off-road race with the prime requisite being able train adequately and line up confidently on Event Day.

The bulk of the field take between 3-4 hours to complete their journey so a weekly run leading up to this “time on feet” is necessary if one wants to finish comfortably and to enjoy the journey.

Teen scoops gold in javelin

Motueka High School’s 14-year-old Ruby Donnelly has always enjoyed athletic endeavours so halfway through 2020 she asked her school’s year-9 Dean if she could join the sports class with highly-respected coach Tony Aikenhead.

“I like everything about sport, it’s fun and I’m really competitive,” says Ruby.

When two of her friends were throwing the javelin and encouraged her to give it a go, she had no idea it’d lead her on a path to a gold medal.

“The first time I threw the javelin it only went 15 metres and was very wobbly.”

Under the tutelage of Tony Aikenhead, Ruby was taught “lots of tips” during the class’s thrice weekly trainings that would put her in good stead for her first championships as her natural ability for the sport was quickly realised.

“You’ve got to get the right technique and keep it straight. You’ve also got to take the wind into account,” says Ruby.

Within six months of that initial throw Ruby was competing for her first time at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletic Association 2020 Championships in Tauranga from 11-13 December.

Competing in the Under-16 girls javelin throw with around 20 fellow competitors from the length and breadth of the country, Ruby was one of only two

year 9’s. Consistently throwing around 33 metres, Ruby was hoping to throw her personal best of 34 + metres but it would be her longest throw of 33.60 metres that was enough for her to secure the gold medal.

“I didn’t know I was going

to come first! But I was really happy to win it, I couldn’t stop smiling, I was so shocked.”

With the second-place getter throwing 33.07 metres it was a close competition that she won wearing an “old” pair of shoes that had also been worn by

Tony’s daughter when she won.

“Everyone had flash as equipment and it was embarrassing having old shoes but it obviously didn’t matter. I also think I threw so well because of the Weetbix I ate that morning.”

Taking out the top podium

spot also saw her feature on Sky Sport and she’s inspired to continue following her love of sport, which includes netball and touch.

“I want to try and break the national javelin record for my age group.”
