Brightwater is blooming Jacqui Rawson Reporter

jacqui@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Arch is joining other flower enthusiasts this coming weekend when they put their summer creations on display in Brightwater. The bright blooms of summer will be on display at the Brightwater Hall as part of the Brightwater Summer Flower Show, a chance for the public to enjoy the marvel of flowers. “I started my love of flowers as a kid,” says dahlia grower Arch Crerar. Arch and his siblings would wander around what, as kids, seemed like a huge garden filled with flowers that towered above their heads. Gardening was part of the school curriculum in those days when students learnt how to grow flowers and vegetables for their tables.

Serial arsonist suspected after Waimea College blaze Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

A fire that broke out at Waimea College on Saturday has prompted talk of a serial arsonist after a spate of similar foliage fires were reported over the last month.

The alarm was raised at 5.07pm by scaffolders working on site at the time. Flames were seen reaching over 20ft as the blaze took hold of pine trees and undergrowth by one of the college buildings. Caretaker for Waimea College, Richard Powley, rushed to the scene and helped the scaffolders

try to prevent the fire spreading. “I heard a lot of commotion so came out and was confronted by the fire and several tradies trying to put it out. I ran inside to get some fire extinguishers which helped dampen the undergrowth, but the flames were going up higher than the roof, so we were

all relieved to hear the fire truck siren in the distance.” Craig Clayworth, Senior Station Officer for the Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade, says, “Fires like this tend to spread quickly, especially at this time of year when things are dry, so it was lucky the alarm was raised swiftly.” The fire

Brightwater is Serial arsonist suspected after blaze blooming FROM PAGE 1 Institutions like the Brightwater Horticultural Society, which is putting on the flower show, are dying across the country, says Arch, and he hopes to have a younger generation coming through with the interest of growing and displaying flowers. “It’s a great group of people but we need some younger ones to breathe some life into it again,” says Arch. Anyone is welcome and it’s a place of support especially for anyone new. A chance to mix with like-minded people and get some advice on how to improve on next year’s blooms. “It’s very laid back and the baking is pretty good as well,” says

Arch, “some excel in cooking as well as flowers.” Arch’s focus is dahlias, he says it’s because of the abundance of colour and sizes along with the fact their season is long, running from December until the first frost. New exhibitors are welcome for the weekend’s show as are the public, to enjoy the impressive flower displays. There will also be raffles, morning teas, a plant stall, and a baking stall to check if Arch’s thoughts on the quality of the baking are accurate. The one day only show will be happening at the Brightwater Hall this Saturday, 23rd January, from 9.00 am until 3.45 pm. The cost is $4 for adults.

Jenny Nicholson Colin Franklin Gibbs has been awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to agriculture and the community after more than 50 years of service in various farming, sporting and community organisations. “I wasn’t a great achiever academically, I didn’t even get School Cert, but it doesn’t always follow that if you are not academically brilliant you can’t do things in the community and in life,” Colin says. Having been in Waimea Col-

lege’s first fifteen for rugby and first eleven for cricket, it was a natural fit for him to volunteer at the Wakefield Cricket Club. He organised the team, mowed the domain and prepared the cricket wicket. He also served on the Young Farmers committee where he learned meeting procedures which gave him a good grounding for service later in life. “You need support from family to be able to do all I did,” says Colin. He credits both his wife Mari-

lyn and his parents for that support. Serving the community was something Colin had seen in his parents and grandparents all his life. His father Philip was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to agriculture and the community, 25 years ago, His grandfather was president of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association in 1933, his father in 1963, and Colin in 1979 and 1980. While proud to be acknowledged, Colin says helping others is just something you do.

FROM PAGE 1 on anything which may help the police enquiry,” says Craig. Detective Nick Parlane of Nelson Police says, “We are treating the fire as suspicious. There have been five other foliage fires in the area recently. Kids talk to other

kids, who then talk to parents, so please, pass on any information regarding those responsible.” There were three fence and hedge fires on nearby Templemore Drive between 20 and 30 December, one on Hill Street on 11 December, and another on Heron Grove on 30 December. Enquiries are on-

going, but it’s possible the fire at Waimea College is linked. “I’ve been here for 37 years,” says Richard, “and the trees have always been there. Now we’ll have to dig them out and start again.” Call 105 if you have any info about these fires or see anyone acting suspiciously or lighting fires.

Local comedian gets big break in America Jo Kent Reporter

jo@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Nelsonian comedian Nick Rado, who also happens to be the head writer for satirical TV show 7 Days, is taking his comedy set to America without even setting foot in the country. After spending lockdown in Richmond with his family, the opportunity to produce a comedy album for America’s largest independent comedy production and distribution company, Comedy Dynamics, came up and he recorded his set at The Playhouse in Mapua last week in front of a sell-out crowd. “It’s a great way for me to have exposure in America without going over there and getting Covid,” says Nick. “My aim is to get my album to number one in the comedy album charts in the US when it’s released later this year.” The album was recorded over two nights last week to an audience of over 100 locals at Mapua’s Playhouse, a venue Nick chose to perform at himself. “The best thing is that people from Nelson and Tasman were in the crowd to add laughs and it will be broadcast across America,”

says Nick. The point of difference for Nick is that his set is full of clean Kiwi humour which is comedy gold overseas. “The album is tried and tested stuff that’s worked all over the world... there’ll be a few things I have to change or roll out a few jokes I used to do when I was performing overseas – gags about me being from New Zealand and such – and I’ll have to say things like grocery store, garbage and ‘aloominim’.” His album is thought to be the first internationally-distributed comedy special to be recorded in Tasman. Kiwis can get their hands on a copy of the album through Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Music and several other digital platforms. “When the album is released around March or April time, I will be calling on all Tasman and Nelsonians to buy the album to help get me to that top spot in the US charts,” says Nick. “It would be very funny to see and hear Americans try to pronounce Mapua.” Dad to two kids under five, Nick and his wife Sophie, a yoga teacher, currently live in Nelson. Teaching together for 40 years Jenny Nicholson Reporter

jenny@waimeaweekly.co.nz

Jo Hillerby and Jeanette Booth started their teaching careers on the same day at the same school, Tapawera Area School. And now they have retired the same day too. Students at their farewell spoke of the huge impact both have had on the lives of many students. One student said they were extremely supportive ‘whether it was fixing young students uniforms or fixing the tears of teenagers.’ Jeanette and Jo’s careers were full of variety they say comes from working in an area school. “Tapawera is such a great oppor-

tunity. You get to teach 5 year to 18-year-olds,” says Jeanette. They trained as primary teachers but ended up teaching all age groups and enjoyed the flexibility and the small class sizes of 7 to 12 students. “We didn’t retrain, just learned on the job. As the need arises people just take the opportunities,” says Jeanette. She says she isn’t a good cook and doesn’t do it for pleasure but enjoyed teaching home economics. “When people are very good at something, they may not be very good at teaching it because they want to take over when it’s done the wrong way,” she says. She remembers her first day as scary but says starting with five

and six-year-olds made it easier. Jeanette and Jo moved to Tapawera when they married local men. Jo has fond memories of musicals where she helped backstage with costuming. She also appreciated those who had left school still acknowledging her when they see her. Her career included teaching new entrants, intermediate students, home economics, reading recovery, careers advising, health education and looking after the trade’s academy at Tapawera. “It kept it interesting,” she says. Jo and Jeanette didn’t plan to retire together but had acknowledged they were thinking about it. They are looking forward to time with grandchildren.

New police patrol cars

Senior Sergeant Hamish Chapman with his current Holden. Photo: Jo Kent. It’s a new year and with it comes a new fleet of police cars which are being rolled out across the country, including our Nelson Tasman stations. After General Motors announced it was pulling Holden out of the Australasian market, the decision was made to use Skoda Superb as the new frontline patrol car. The more environmentally-friendly Skoda will become the primary response vehicle, with the first models expected on roads as early as April. Tasman currently has about 144 cars and light commercial vehicles. The Skodas will be deployed to districts as and when needed, based on when vehicles in the current fleet reach the end of their useful life. Generally, police cars are considered for replacement at an average age of six to seven years or once they clock up 120,000km, whichever comes first. When

they get retired from the fleet, they are sold off through Turners Auctions. Senior Sergeant Hamish Chapman of Nelson Bays Police says, “We aren’t in any hurry to get rid of the old cars, but it will be nice to get some new vehicles eventually.” Police tested electric and hybrid vehicles, but due to limitations including power efficiency as well as the overall ownership cost they were not the preferred option. However, the evaluation gave police some real experience with them and provided practical learnings for their future implementation. At present, it’s not clear which local squad will get to try out the cars first, but Hamish is staying pretty low-key about it. “I’m not too bothered really, so long as it gets me from A to B, that’s the main thing,” he says.

Local history writers required

Jacqui Rawson

Are you keen to research and produce some history articles? Photo: Supplied

For the past 12 months, the Waimea Weekly has been providing history stories regularly and feedback from readers is to keep the stories coming. We’re keen to continue providing what our readers are keen for and we’re looking for a group of people interested in helping us out with that task.

Free Skincare Trial Program

If you’re a budding history buff, a researcher, or someone who enjoys sharing facts and would like to share local history with our readers on a regular basis, then please get in touch. We don’t require an expert in history or writing. Instead, someone who has an interest in history and is happy to do the research to cobble together the basis of an article. The paper can provide support as

required to finalise the articles for the paper and you’ll join a group of like-minded history buffs. The information gathered as a result of the research is sought after by many and successful individuals will be helping to ensure that the local history continues to be passed onto our 12,000 readers. A fee will also be paid. Please email: editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz with your interest.

The Positive Ageing Expo is back in April this year, showcasing the recreational, health and social services available in Nelson Tasman to make ageing a positive experience. It’s happening on Friday 16 April 2021 from 10.00 am – 3.00 pm at the Headingly Centre, Richmond. You need to make sure that you register to be a stallholder by Sunday 21 March 2021.

Tasman’s Freedom Camping Ambassadors are out and about again this summer. Their role is to visit the popular freedom camping sites around the region and help holidaymakers to understand our rules and restrictions and to camp responsibly. Thanks to a grant from the central government Responsible Camping Funding, the Ambassadors will be working more hours per week and will be available right through until the end of March. While carrying out their role, which includes promoting caring for the environment, helping campers to find appropriate camping sites, and explaining the rules around freedom camping in our District, the Ambassadors get to meet a wide variety of visitors to our region.

If you are a community group, agency or organisation that can make a positive impact on our ageing population, register for a stall now and make your presence felt at the Positive Ageing Expo.

The majority are committed to doing the right thing and looking after our beautiful environment. For more information about responsible camping, visit the website tasman.govt.nz.

I was delighted at the recent funding announcement of $6 million for our region through the Government’s Freshwater Improvement Fund, which will help to restore our natural environment and create new jobs in our region to accelerate our recovery from the impact of COVID-19. Our region will receive $1.3 million towards the Wakapuaka Enhancement Project, along with funding $4.75 million for two projects, which are led by the Tasman District Council to improve water quality and fish diversity throughout the region. All three projects are expected to create more than 50 new jobs. This builds on the $5.3 million announced in 2020 towards cleaning up the Maitai River and Waimea Inlet. The investment into these projects across Nelson and Tasman affirms the Government’s commitment to our environment, as well as creating new jobs and investing in our local economy.

Kick-start your career with NMIT while you’re at school Whether planning to complete your Year 13 studies or leave school early there are plenty of opportunities for you with NMIT. Year 11 students or above, you can get a head start on your career with either a Taster or a Secondary Tertiary Alignment Resource (STAR) course. Taster courses are designed to be an introduction to a study area and includes hands-on practical activities with no assessments. STAR courses are similar to a Taster course but may include a unit standard assessment. If you are looking to prepare yourself for tertiary study outside of school, take a look at our Foundation Skills Level 1 and 2. Both programmes provide a supported pathway into further study and employment with an aim to provide young people with the skills and confidence needed to go on into further study at NMIT from level 3 or into entry level employment. For more information about our Taster, STAR and Foundation Skills courses visit nmit.ac.nz/school-students.

Hills and wine named after Richmond pioneer Dianne Scott Charles Bigg Wither was born in Manydon Park, a manor in Hampshire, England, on 27 April 1822. He was the youngest son of Harris Bigg Wither, Lord of the Manor from 1813 to 1833, and his wife Ann Frith. Harris is famous for having proposed to Jane Austen, his advances being rejected. Charles was educated at Winchester and at Edinburgh University. In 1843 he migrated to New Zealand aboard the ship Ursula, which touched first at Wellington and then came on to Nelson, arriving on 6 August. After the excitement of the Wairau massacre had subsided, Charles took up a sheep run (run no 14) in the Wairau district in 1848. This run was about 15,000 acres. During the next few years Charles purchased from various owners five or six

of the surveyed sections between the run and Alabama Road, making his holding about 16,000 acres. He also had as free-hold as much as he could of the original run. The Maori name of the hills hugging the southern boundary of Blenheim had already been lost and it wasn’t long before they took the name of this colourful English man. He sold this land in 1867. Wither bought and sold several properties in Waimea, Nelson and Tua Marina, but lived himself on his farm at Richmond. In April 1850, Charles married Eleanor Burn, born 1831 in Kent, England. They married in Nelson. His stately home in Richmond was built by Walter Moore. It stood well back from the road, almost opposite the cemetery, down a driveway lined with gum trees. That house burned down, but it appears this was rebuilt. It was in this

problems. Their politics has become too partisan and tribal between Republicans and Democrats. The US media are too politically aligned, feeding the divisions. college football team for the first match ever played in Nelson. Charles died at Wensley Hill in Richmond on 28 June 1894, and is buried at the Richmond Cemetery, opposite his former home. He left a large family, and the nine sons, who distinguished themselves at Nelson College, all settled in the colony. The Honourable (named after Charles’s brief stint in Parliament) is Wither Hills Estates’ finest pinot noir – named in 2014 in tribute to the Honourable Charles Bigg Wither, one of the pioneering farmers of the region. In homage to his legacy and the hills that bear his name, the Honourable is chosen only in special vintages that craft super-premium Marlborough pinot noir, selling at $75 dollars a bottle. A fitting tribute to an early pioneer.

Nelson Matters My hope this week is for a peaceful inauguration of new US President Joe Biden. It matters because America is the oldest, largest and most powerful democracy in the world. It is so important after the thuggery of last week when Trump supporters rampaged through Congress attempting to overturn their Election outcome. We need to learn from America’s

home that they raised their 12 children. In 1856 Charles became one of the first governors for the Nelson College and is mentioned in the 1858 deed of foundation. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace and in 1859 he became a JP, resigning that post in November 1862. During 1863, he became a member of both the Legislative Council and the Nelson Provincial Council. Victoria University writes that although appointed a member of the Legislative Council, he resigned during the same year without taking this seat. By 1865, Charles had become one of the first breeders of deer in New Zealand, these being raised on his Aniseed Valley Property. He was also a member of the Nelson Acclimatisation Society and the Richmond Institute. His son Fred captained the

China’s recent action in Hong Kong and with the Uighur people and Russia’s poisoning and the arrest of opposition leader Alexei Navalny are wrong and we must say so. SPEEDWAY This weekend the Milestone Homes Top of the South speedway are hosting the Capelli Hair Salon New Zealand Streetstock Grand Prix. Around fifty cars have entered this major event from all over New Zealand so qualifying will be tough and with only twenty-six heading to the finals the drivers will need to be on their A game. Entered is the current 1nz of Darrel Richards and 3nz of Levi Van Lieshout while there is a good mix of Christchurch, Dunedin, and Gisborne cars to keep them all honest. Some names to watch out for are the Gooch brothers Cody, Sean and Brendon from Gisborne who are always competitive and who also can decide on who wins a championship or not while the large amount for Christchurch cars that are fronting are well known to work together to secure a championship as well. The lone Wanganui driver 31V Simon Bland is no stranger to racing here in Nelson as he has been a regular visitor here and can turn some quick laps while the experienced drivers 62c David McSherry, 27c Paul Leslie and 54c Kirk Aldridge from Woodford Glen speedway in Christchurch would be within the favourites to take out this Grand Prix event. Local driver numbers have been on the increase this season with a handful of drivers such as

Also on the cards for this weekend is the open club championship for Stockcars and the Mark Thorn Memorial for Sidecars while the Historic Stockcars make another visit to our track. Due to the big number of entries for the Streetstock GP the racing will be starting half an hour earlier than normal so we will be kicking off the show at 5.30pm. Serviced apartments, the best of both worlds

Peter Gibbs With many of Nelson's top swimmers off to Taupo for Swimming NZ's open water championships and the Epic swims, some of the older competitors must have thought they were in with a chance at Thursday's weekly Port Nelson Swim Series event. Terry Bone (48), Ben Marshall (35) and Hamish Neill (57) had the lead in the 1200m race, when a non-wetsuited figure shot past and took the win by 14 seconds. Alec Swan had kept a low profile at the start, possibly saving himself for Taupo, but he was impressive in the sprint to the finish line. Keeping it in the family, 14-yearold Brooke Swan was up near the front, taking the second women's spot behind Isabella Thurlow. Flossie Van Dyke was close behind to place third in the women's field. At the halfway point in the season,

Competition fierce in Nelson swims

the points table is starting to take shape with many swimmers using the tough local competition to prepare themselves for national swims. Christina Harris hasn't missed a Nelson swim all season and is leading the overall series here. She also leads the national ocean swim series in the F55-59 age group after her win in Takapuna late last year. With the 3.3km Capital Classic coming up in Wellington on January 31 and the 5km Akaroa swim in February, she's in a good position to consolidate that lead. Oxford Bayley and Terry Bone are in a tie for second overall in the Nelson series, both having missed a swim or two. However, both will be chasing gold in Wellington, with Bayley seeking to avenge his Takapuna loss to the ageless Auckland swimmer Brent Foster (now in his fifties) with an overall win, while Bone will be aiming for a top

ten finish along with top honours in M45-49. It's worth noting that Nelson has a good history in the Wellington swim, with Luke Kelly having won it twice in the last three years, only bowing to Foster two years ago. Abbey Smale is having a run of good results. Unbeaten nationally all last season in open water swims, she won the women's section of the Takapuna race and will be chasing her second consecutive win in Wellington on January 31. Other age groupers with high hopes of success in Wellington include Ben Marshal (M35-39), Ruth Thomas (F40-44), Hamish Neil (M55-59), Denis Cooper (M60-64), Maggy Johnston (F6569), Ben Van Dyke and Stuart Hebberd (M70-74) and Derek Eaton (M75-79). In Thursday’s 600m event, Noah Brehaut won in a sprint from Emily Chadderton.
