Council flats get new look $1.17M spent on 39 Stoke flats Thirty nine Nelson City Council-owned flats in Stoke have been upgraded with new kitchens, insulation and windows. The $1.17 million upgrade was done with Housing New Zealand money – as long as the council maintains ownership of them. Residents of the flats were treated to a thank you afternoon tea last Friday after months of disruption during the building process.

The flats have been renewed with larger double glazed windows, insulation and modern, open plan kitchens. Many of them have also been extended to allow for a bedroom where they were previously bedsits. Mayor Aldo Miccio says the project would not have been possible without the generous support of HNZ’s Housing Innovation Fund. He also thanked tenants for moving out while the work was completed, and generally “making do” during construction. “This was immensely appreciated and we hope you are enjoying your cosy new homes,” he said.
