Kids injected with dud vaccine The district health board has apologised after 87 children were injected with a dud vaccine which had been exposed to cold temperatures, rending it ineffective.

Vaccines should be stored at temperatures between two and eight degrees but some were stored in a chilly bin that went below zero on a journey to the schools, says Nelson Marlborough medical officer of health,

Dr Ed Kiddle. “This was identified when the full temperature data was able to be downloaded from the data loggers on return to the hospital base.

“We have contacted parents and apologised for this incident and based on external expert advice, recommended revaccination to ensure the children have received the appropriate levels of immunisation

The school-based programme was temporarily put on hold while the incidents were investigated and solutions were intro-

duced to stop it happening again. He says the children were not exposed to any risks from the dud vaccines.

The DHB has now introduced laptops and software, so information about the temperature can be seen before the vaccinations begin. The vaccines were an HPV (to prevent cervical cancer), booster for diptheria, tetanus and pertussis.

Shannon Mcilroy reckons he plays pretty well if his wife Amy is watching, so her inclusion in the New Zealand lawn bowls squad for the Commonwealth Games might just be his secret advantage.

“I always look over and she does a sign or starts giggling. She’ll do something to make me get an extra five or ten per cent,” he says.

Both Shannon and Amy will be competing in Glasgow, the first time the husband and wife duo have gone together to a major event, after Shannon represented New Zealand in Delhi in 2010.

“It’ll be pretty cool if I’m playing on a green and Amy is playing on the other and I can look over and see how she’s going,” he says.

down at the same time when announcing the team for Glasgow, and Shannon and Amy say that was the biggest giveaway that they would both be going. “Well, it was either we’re both going or neither of us are,” says Amy. She says it seems “unreal”, considering they both met through lawn bowls years ago. “Now we’re married and going to the Commonwealth Games, I did not picture that happening at all.”

Shannon, who plays for the Stoke Bowling Club, has been selected in the singles and triples. In the latter he will be joined by Ali Forsyth, who is originally from Nelson, and Tony Grantham.

stoked with how things are going. Ali is a bit of a class act. If he’s on form you’re in with a chance of winning.”

Amy, who plays for the United Bowling Club, will be in the triples and fours. At 23 years old she is the “old duck” in the triples, and will play alongside Nelson’s Val Smith in the fours.

Amy says she’d love to hear the national anthem playing at the Commonwealth Games, which is just an alternative way of saying she wants to win a gold medal.

But Shannon admits the competition is going to be tough for them both. “We’re going into

unknown territory really. If the Commonwealth Games was here in New Zealand we’d be a realistic chance of winning gold but now, if we play well, we’ll be an outside chance of medalling.”

When asked what she was looking forward to most in Glasgow, Amy says she just wants to make her family proud, and would be thinking of her late uncle and poppa when competing with the silver fern on. “My biggest thing is definitely doing this for my family, and my mum and dad are coming over to watch.”

Even though they’re husband and wife, there will be no rooming together in the athletes’ village. “We’re not allowed. We’re there to play bowls, not hugs and cuddles,” says Shannon.

Images from the Rising Sun’s CCTV footage show a man minutes before a fire was lit out the back of the Waimea Rd pub. Police are appealing for information on the man.

Images of the man suspected of setting fire to the Rising Sun Tavern at least once have been released by police, and the manager of the pub says someone must know him.

The grainy images captured on CCTV footage from the back on the Rising Sun in the early hours of Monday morning, April 14, show the man walking towards the back of the tavern and less than two minutes later walking away as smoke and a glow from the fire can be seen in the corner of the security footage.

Police say the man is the centre of their investigations but they have been unable to identify him and are hoping someone will come forward with details of him.

Rising Sun general manager, Sam Cotton, says they want the man caught and after six arsons or attempted arsons in the past year, they’re sick of the worry that comes with constantly being targeted.

“If he isn’t caught he will kill someone. We have people who live upstairs and all it takes is for one of these fires to get up-

stairs and people will die.”

The first arson attack last year meant the pub was closed for nine months while it was fixed.

Since then there have been another five arson attempts from late last year to early this year.

The latest was in April and was when the footage was captured.

Sam says he doesn’t recognise the man and has no idea why someone would want to target the bar.

He says staff and the Christchurch-based owners are at their wits-end and he just wants the man caught.

A smoke alarm is being hailed as saving a family home and nine of its members who were sleeping inside.

A dishwasher in the Nile St home caught fire around 3am on Sunday morning.

Fortunately, the home’s smoke alarm sounded, waking up the family before they ran outside and called 111.

says the family did the right thing and the fire was only minutes away from becoming “a major”.

“It was only another three or four minutes from the rest of the kitchen catching alight and major damage. So they did all the right things and the damage was minimal in the end.”

The fire service was there for about an

hour putting out the fire and cleaning it up.

Craig says the family had to find somewhere else to stay for the rest of the night but credited the smoke alarms for saving the day once again. “It’s a pretty opportune time to remind people to check their alarms and if they need assistance, to give the station a call.”

The idea came about when a member of the rotary club was given an estate lot of records. “We had been holding them in storage for a while but didn’t know what to do with them,” says Jan. “Once word got out we had them, we ended up with a whole collection from around Nelson. Motorsport park takes next step Locally Owned and Operated

The backers of a proposed motorsports and adventure park near Tapawera are holding a meeting in Nelson next month, to present their plans for the park and form a working group to “facilitate the project”.

The New Zealand Central Motorsports and Adventure Park was granted resource management planning permission by the Environment Court last month. The park will be constructed on a 203 hectare property at Stanley Brook owned by Nelson motorsport enthusiast Garry Adcock who, initiated the project with his former busi-

ness partner Gary Donaldson in 2011.

Now project manager Dave McLeod says the next step is to form a group to start the second stage of the project. Dave says they have already been approached by a number of people interested in being involved in the park’s development and will form a working group or committee after next month’s meeting. “The project has been in the planning stages for a long time but we haven’t been comfortable about going out and seeking support until we got the resource consent,” Dave says. “Now we have

that it’s time to take that next step.”

Garry says the key to the venture’s success will be to develop a site that caters for a wide range of activities. Although the park will be centred around a complex of motorsport tracks and facilities it will also include a conference centre, accommodation, a camping ground, mountainbike park and tracks, commercial premises and a variety of recreational activities.

Dave says the project had been estimated to cost around $26 million, although the final figure was likely to be considerably

less because they could make significant savings on constructing the sealed racing circuit. “We thought it would cost around $12 to $14 million to build the track and then we found out the (Highlands Motorsport Park) Cromwell track only cost $4 million. They saved a lot of money by doing the preliminary earthworks themselves so we can probably do the same thing.”

The meeting will be held at the Honest Lawyer on June 26 starting at 7pm. Anyone interested in the project is welcome to attend.

With young musical talent belting out well-crafted original tunes for three hours on Friday night, it seemed the judges might have had a hard time finding just ten finalists for the Smokefreerockquest regional finals.

Thirty acts representing every secondary school from Nelson through to Golden Bay took part in the 26th year of Smokefreerockquest, and have

been whittled down to just ten for the regional finals this Friday night. Music ranged from altpop synths, death core screams, soulful vocals and mind melting guitar solos giving the sold-out Theatre Royal audience an array of entertainment. The Nelson final is at the Theatre Royal this Friday starting at 7pm. Tickets are $10 for students and $20 for adults from Ticket Direct or at the venue.

Every Friday and Saturday night Nelson’s streets are being watched and patrolled, not just by local police but also by the city’s community patrol.

And now they’re after a few more members to help keep an eye on our city.

The Nelson Community Patrol, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in January, assists police on Friday and Saturday nights, with two members patrolling the streets and acting as “eyes and ears” for the police.

A third member of the patrol also mans the CCTV footage of the city, in the police command centre for the two nights.

Chair of the group, John Wyllie, says its interaction with police has increased over recent years and is now firmly a part of the police strategy each weekend.

He says natural attrition means the group looks for around five or six new members each year and he believes it’s a great first step for those looking to join the police.

“Those people who are maybe looking for a career in the police, they can volunteer their services for 12 months and they can see how it works from

“We’ve just had two from our group start at the police college, which is fantastic.”

Community constable Ray Clapp says the way of policing has changed with more of a focus on prevention and the community patrol plays a big part in that.

Members of the community patrol are expected to give up one night a month to patrol, but timing is flexible. Work can range from picking up a discarded stolen bicycle to being the first on the scene of a car accident or drunken fight. The patrol has its own dedicated ve-

hicle and is linked to police via a police radio.

While anyone who has relevant skills and a willingness to help their community is welcome, John and Ray say those thinking about a career with the police should be the first to sign up as it provides practical experience for them.

Stoke couple win NZ’s highest rose award For 50 years Norm and Letty Thawley have shared a passion for roses, and earlier this month their life-long efforts were rewarded with the county’s highest rose society honour – the Frank Penn Award.

It was the first time the award has been given to a couple and the Thawley’s say it was a huge shock, in front of the “bigwigs” of the New Zealand Rose Society at its AGM in Christchurch. “We had not the slightest inkling whatsoever.

It was a huge bombshell to us.

The people we went with knew what was coming up and they insisted we went,” says Letty.

Norm, who is hard of hearing, says he didn’t even know what was happening until Letty told him to stand up and join her on stage. “I gathered they were talking about Letty but didn’t know until we got up there what it was all about. I was absolutely blown away,” he says.

Visitors to Stoke possibly wonder just how the locality came to receive its name and why roads came to be called Nayland Road, Polstead Road, Songer Street and, a little further afield, Torlesse Street. The name of Stoke was given by William Songer who was the first settler here. He came from Stoke-by-Nayland in Suffolk (in the sheep country of East Anglia).

Polstead was a nearby village.

When the New Zealand Company’s Second Settlement (Nelson) Expedition ships were leaving England the farewell sermon was preached by the Vicar of Stoke-by-Nayland, the Rev. C. M. Torlesse. Charles Torlesse, brother of Harriet Bridges, went to Stoke in 1823. His wife, Catherine Gurney (born 1793), was the eldest child of Edward Wakefield and so was a sister of the Wakefields who founded the New Zealand Company settlements. Their eldest son, also Charles, came out with the Nelson Expedition and later was a surveyor, more notably in Canterbury.

William Songer who had been the gardener at Stoke-by-Nayland came out as a personal attendant upon Captain Wakefield, while his wife, who had been the nurse who brought up (he Torlesse family, came out as a matron on one of the emigrant ships.

Mrs Torlesse owned land in New Zealand which was cared for by Songer and she used to send out seeds for him to plant. It is reasonable to believe that some of the old trees in the area owe their origin to this source.

Have a Go! Stepping Out is an event for the whole family, no matter how young or old, there is something for everyone to get involved in. The model train will be running at Tahunanui Beach, which is a treat for young ones. Anyone can put some skates on and check out the awesome indoor skating rink that caters for all abilities, as well as the Sport Tasman Activity Trailer for the younger kids, featuring a variety of activities such as balance beams. Adults won’t miss

out either with sports such as Golf, Tai Chi, and Aikido on offer.

Stoke volunteer firefighter Mark Janssen achieved his goal of improving his time in the Sky Tower Stair Challenge in Auckland on Saturday racing up 51 floors and 1103 stairs wearing 25 kilograms of fire fighting equipment in 13 minutes 19 seconds.

That was almost two minutes faster than the last time he completed the challenge, which is a fundraiser for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, in 2011. Mark was one of 700 firefighters from around New Zealand and Australia to compete in Saturday’s event which is aiming to raise $1 million for the charity.

Mark says he recorded a faster time because he trained a lot harder and, with the help of ASB Aquatic and Fitness centre trainer Andrew Kennedy, a lot smarter for this year’s event. But Mark concedes no amount of training could prepare him for the 13 minutes and 19 seconds of leg and lung-burning agony he endured on Saturday.

“I’ve been training with Andrew since February and he’s been pushing me really hard. I’ve been doing beach training, interval training and running up stairs but that was nothing compared to racing up the Sky Tower - I was absolutely ruined when I got to the top,” Mark says.

Although Mark finished over three minutes behind the winner of the masters' section, Melbourne’s Scott McGraw, and more than four minutes behind overall winner Otara’s John Harrison, who clocked 8 minutes 36 seconds, he received plenty of accolades for being the top fundraiser.

Mark says he had amazing support from businesses and individuals around the NelsonTasman region and on the West Coast and that

helped him raise $13,208 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Mark’s efforts were recognised at the awards function held in Sky City on Saturday night when he was presented with a trophy.

“I just want to say a huge thanks to everyone who was part of the Nelson fundraising campaign. To be awarded the trophy for raising the most funds was amazing but the trophy doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to the Nelson community.

“Everyone who I approached was so positive and generous. Total Oil, Hydraulink and Ewing Poultry were really generous but so many more gave $100 or $200 or whatever they could.”

Mark says he also received great support from his partner Nyanne Graf, a policewoman, and the Nelson and Mapua fire brigades. Nyanne, a former member of the Mapua Voluntary Fire Brigade, often trained with Mark while the Mapua brigade’s deputy chief, Alby Wyatt, helped arrange the donation from Total Oil. Mark says another highlight of the weekend was meeting three young cancer sufferers for a photo shoot at the Auckland Fire Station. The photo will go on the back of the next Firefighters’ Calendar which is a fundraiser for Child Cancer.

“I was selected for this year’s Firefighters’ Calendar and they gave all of us some of the proceeds to travel to competitions like the Sky Tower Challenge. But I gave all the money to Child Cancer and when we finished the photo shoot the youngest boy came up to me and hugged my leg and said thanks - it was so emotional.”

Mark is keen to have a third attempt at the Sky Tower Stair Challenge and also wants to try and organise a Tasman team for the event.

The Tasman Rugby Union believes there is still a place for school teams in its age grade rugby competitions, despite more representation from clubs this year.

Stoke, Marist, Nelson and Waimea Old Boys all have teams entered in age grade rugby competitions, where they compete with other schools from Nelson and Marlborough.

All of the Garin College teams play under the Marist banner and Nayland College do the same with Stoke, while Nelson has one team entered in the Under-14 grade and Waimea Old Boys (who call themselves Waimea College Old Boys) play in the Under-18 competition.

A change of name and date and more variety are planned for the fifth edition of Nelson’s annual bike festival in an attempt to boost the event’s popularity.

The Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle Festival has traditionally been held during October but this year the newly-named Bikefest Nelson has been scheduled to run from January 31 to February 15. It will incorporate a number of highprofile events that already take place during that period as as well as most of the “tried and true” festival events and activities.

The Top Gun, Lakes to Sea, Santa Cruz Coppermine and national Go By Bike Day are just some of the existing cycling events that will

become part of Bikefest Nelson. The festival will also include its iconic Urban Cross-country race through the grounds and buildings of Nelson College and the popular guided mountainbike tours.

Tasman Wheelers races, BMX racing, an AvantiPlus Richmond sponsored bike ride to the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival and Village Cycles bunch and coffee rides will also be part of Bikefest Nelson.

Event coordinator Belinda Crisp says they have also introduced some exciting new concepts aimed at widening the appeal of the festival. These included a bikeart competition and Carnivelo at Trafalgar Park. Bikefest Nelson starts on January 31.

It was a homecoming for Nelson Netball when the first games of the season were played indoors at Saxton Stadium on Saturday.

While opening day was last week, the games were played outside as the stadium was prepared for the Tactix v Pulse game on Sunday.

In the Grade 1 game encounter, it was a case of the youth of Garin College up against the experience and wile of Jacks Red. Garin had registered a 29-23 win over Nayland College in the opening round, while Jacks were pipped at the post 25-27

by Prices Pharmacy Silver.

The teams traded goals to convert their own centre pass, until Garin scored five unanswered goals and went on to be 10-6 up at the first break, courtesy of perfect shooting by goal shoot, Olivia Nott.

Jacks Red shooter Erika Newport, was just finding her rhythm when an injury forced her from the court early in the second quarter. The injury caused a reshuffle with the introduction of Robyn Leonard at centre and Ange Scoble moving into the goal circle.

Mr Jones is a New Zealand European who is 175 cm tall and has a distinctive birthmark on his left cheek.
