Missing money still not found Andrew Board Around $100,000 in levy payments are unaccounted for say residents of Waimea Village and they’re preparing for a court battle with the owners of the village, Michael and Carolyn Wright, to find out where it is. Residents committee chair Jerry Rowland says a 2011 decision by an anonymous arbitrator required a percentage of the lease to go to a repair and maintenance

fund, which should by now have around $100,000 in it. As of June this year the committee say they were told the money is not there and Michael Wright refuses to tell them where it is. TDC councillor Kit Maling was at the meeting and was firmly on the side of the residents. He told the Nelson Weekly that the residents have valid concerns, chief among them is the missing money in the repair and replacement fund.

“They’ve paid approximately $100,000 into it and they don’t know where that is. That’s the biggest concern. We can’t say he’s stolen it, but there are certainly some questions to be answered.” Nelson Weekly asked Michael if the money was in the repair and maintenance fund as required by the arbitrator, he declined to comment. legal battle with the owners of the village as disputes over lease payments get set to stretch into a third year. Last week a new arbitrator released his levy decision on the levy increase for 2012, raising the monthly fees from $125 to $182.75. Michael and Carolyn had wanted $284. It is the second year in a row an arbitrator has stepped into the dispute, with the fees

Fair helps grow gardening trend Local garden-variety green thumbs will be getting stuck into their gardens after a busy weekend saw around three thousand avid gardeners turning out for the annual Growables Garden Fair on Sunday. Organised by the Nelson Growables Charitable Trust and held at Founders Park in full bloom, the fair featured Nelson’s best growers of trees, shrubs, roses, peonies, nuts and even cactus to promote all things growable. More and more Nelsonians are turning to a homegrown way of life says organiser event manager Jo Reilly. “Growing your own food is becoming so much more important, not just for the health benefits but the financial benefits too. Starting a garden from scratch and anything to do with growing your own produce is supported.” The fair is an annual event.

“Actually yes I have, I am doing quite well. I’ve always been organised.”

Missing money still not found, say residents FROM PAGE 1 rising from $80 to $125 last year. Michael has said previously that he would continue to take residents to arbitration every year until he got the amount he wanted. But on Monday he told Nelson Weekly that the levy fees for 2013 would be unlikely to rise but “there are other mechanisms in place in the lease for the recovery of excess costs”. He would not elaborate. But the residents are refusing to pay more than the $125 per month they do currently, citing the missing money and a belief that the Wrights are lying to them about the figure needed to run the village. At the meeting at the village hall on Sunday afternoon an over capacity crowd from the 172 properties, many having to stand outside, told the village’s residents committee they would pay no more. It was later found out that the Wrights had a recording of the

meeting. Instead, the decision to raise money – from supporters outside the village – and fight the Wrights in court was met with cheers and clapping. Residents pay the levy on top of owning their own home and paying normal council rates and other bills. The arbitrator’s decision dates back to January 1 this year, meaning every resident is required to pay the Wrights $635 ten days before Christmas and up their levy payments from December 1. But the residents committee lawyer Warwick Heal has advised the residents not to pay it to the Wrights, according to Jerry. “Warwick’s deepest concern is with the repairs and replacement fund. Right now there should be about $100,000 in that account,” he told the residents. “In June, a year and a half after that award was made, we got a letter saying this year’s increase will implement that account. It should have already been implemented.

“We can’t prove where [the money] is, we don’t know where it is. It’s gone into Michael and Carolyn’s bank account, there’s nothing to stop them for using it from other purposes. Our lawyer has made it clear to us that he’s recommending that we establish a separate bank account and the difference between the $125 you’re now paying and the $182.75 they want, take the difference and put it in this separate account for just repairs and maintenance.” But other residents disagreed and said they shouldn’t pay any more then they do now. Nelson Weekly understands it is quite common practice in this situation for the repair and maintenance fund to belong to the venue as opposed to the landlord and the funds stay with the venue if sold. That is not the case with Waimea Village. Jerry said the residents were up for the fight. “It might be their business, but damn it it’s our home.”

The prime minister spent time touring one of the laboratories and chatting to staff members about their jobs, and said the Cawthron Institute was a world class leader in science innovation, with some of the best scientists conducting cutting edge research that was hugely benefitial to New Zealand’s primary industry. “If we can sell new and creative products to the world we are going to be successful.” Although he’d never fed sea slugs until that day, he says he admired their taste in food as he enjoyed mussels too. Before leaving to his next engagement, the PM talked running with a group of Cawthron employees ‘The CawthRun tribe’ who run together during their lunch break three to four times a week. He then attended the opening a $1 million afterhours healthcare facility at Nelson Hospital, a facility designed to take the burden off the town’s Emergency Department. Earlier in teh day he had attended the announcement of an advanced pilot training school that will open at Helicopter New Zealand in Nelson.

It’s not every day you get hand-fed by the Prime Minister and it was smiles all round for not only a tank of sea slugs who were treated to a lunch of mussels by John Key, but the researchers and scientists at the Cawthron Institute who received news of a $26 million investment towards their research. The groundbreaking research conducted by the Cawthron Institute has been recognised by the government with the Ministry for Primary Industries and Spatnz signing a contract that will see mussel spat selectively bred at the Cawthron Aquaculture Park in Nelson over the next seven years. At a ceremony to unveil the sign for a new $5 million laboratory on Thursday, John Key spoke highly of the staff at the Cawthron Institute saying he was “highly supportive” of the facility and their “world class research.” Cawthron Institute chief executive Professor Charles Eason has called the investment “possibly the most exciting thing to happen in the mussel industry for decades”.

Top teams fight it out for top spot Phillip Rollo It was three from three for The Lakers at the Bowater Motor Group Top Team finals with the St Arnaud eight adding to their previous two titles. The Lakers, who finished with 890 points, more than 120 higher than runners-up, The Sharks, also claimed maximum points in five of the 12 games. Freeman Roofing finished third place with 768 points, just one below The Sharks. Organiser Katrina McLean, of the Moutere Hills Community Centre, says The Lakers “cleaned up” having won by just the sole point last year. “They’ve got great team work and individually they’re all fantastic performers.” The number of points varied per game, so it was very unlikely to see teams finish so close together, despite this year’s second and third place getters being separated by just one point and the same thing

happening when The Lakers won last year. The Silly Billies of Waimea Intermediate School took out the junior section with 638 points, with The Supa Doolies coming second with 526 points. Some of the games and activities had changed for the 2012 edition with the Filco Farm and Sport quad bike pull being one of the more entertaining challenges, while the Mapua Plumbing Stop the Leak and the Nelson Alarms Bombs Away were favourites amongst some event-goers. The Super Sized Sack Race appeared to be the most difficult though, with teams having to put members into a large sack and race around the course. Some teams did not even complete one lap. “Some teams were really struggling in that one. I’d say it was the toughest challenge on the day.” Katrina says the experienced teams added more competition to the event and was hoping they would all return next year.

Black plane will improve service Nelson got its first look at a new black plane last week but it won’t be the last. Air New Zealand flew a brand new ATR72600 into Nelson last week, the first of seven that has been bought by the national airline carrier, to be run by Mt Cook Airlines. The 68-seat planes will cost around $270 million and will add to the current fleet of regional planes, including those operated by Air Nelson. The planes are painted black with a large silver fern on the side and is the first of its kind for Air New Zealand. Mount Cook general manager Sarah Williamson says the new ATRs will allow the airline to further expand its domestic op-

New Plymouth in addition to the ports where the ATR 72-500 currently flies. Nelson and New Plymouth have both demonstrated recent growth and we’re respond-

ing by upgrading some services to the larger ATR aircraft. “The flow-on effect of having additional ATR aircraft in Air New Zealand’s domestic fleet means we will have the flexibility to upgrade some Bombardier Q300 and Beech operated routes, as more capacity is required over the coming years, and further stimulate demand in these regions,” she says. The new-generation ATR72-600 is the most efficient aircraft in its class and features a new cabin layout in Air New Zealand’s latest interior colour palette of chalk and ink, larger overhead bins, and advanced cockpit technology.

Nelson’s new art

TUESDAY 20 November 2012

Locals hunt for safety Andrew Board

Debbie Daniel-Smith, of Nelson City Council, and sculptor Terry Stringer with the new sculpture last Thursday. Photo: Tim Cuff and Nelson City Council. Nelson’s newest piece of public art received a mixed reception amongst those visiting it last week but Nelson City Council says the piece is an exciting addition to the city. The sculpture Dance to the Music of Time, was commissioned by the council at a cost of $200,000. Sculptor Terry Stringer was at the unveiling of the plaque on the sculpture last Thursday. The

piece is at Kinzett Terrace opposite the QE II roundabout. Reaction was mixed when Nelson Weekly visited the sculpture last week. Passers-by said the piece was too small and didn’t have enough impact but others said it was “beautiful” and “nice for Nelson”. The sculpture stands 5.5 metres tall and represents the four seasons and references the bounty of the sea, the land and

the people. It stands atop a two metre plinth which reflects the shape and form of the Cathedral and Trafalgar bridge which acts as a landmark linking sea to city. Deputy mayor, Ali Boswijk says it’s exciting to have it in place. “High quality public art is a key part of creating a vital, exciting city. I’m very pleased with how it looks and think it’s great to have it in place.”

More Nelson hunters are joining local clubs in an effort to stay safe says the president of a deer stalkers club. Morgan Rogers of the Nelson branch of the New Zealand Deer Stalkers Association says his club has more than 500 members, making it the second biggest in the country and has seen a 25 per cent rise in the numbers in the past two years. Membership has spiked on the back of several hunting accidents throughout the country and Morgan says more hunters are safety conscious and wanting to learn how to hunt safely. “There’s definitely been an increase [of members] and people wanting to know what to wear, what not to wear, what to take, how to improve their technique, all that kind of thing,” he says. Since 2002, there have been 15 hunting deaths in New Zealand, the latest just last month in the North Island. Morgan says every death

rocks the hunting community and as a result hunters are keen to make sure there isn’t another one. “All of the cases that have happened recently could have been avoided. The number one rule is that you have to identify your target and you haven’t identified your target if you’ve shot someone. That’s the long and short of it.” The Nelson club runs safety courses for its members and distributes safety information in its monthly newsletter and Morgan says with more and more people heading into the bush he expects the rise in membership to continue. “I’d like to see a lot more people joining up to groups like us to learn more and get more aware. Just because you have your gun licence it doesn’t mean you’re a hunter and that’s the problem. People buy a rifle and head to the bush and can cause some damage.” He says much of the increase has come from young people as the sport’s been seen as the “cool thing to do” recently.

School galas raise more than ever More than $200,000 has been raised by local schools during the spring gala season, money to spend on “extras” that are not funded by the Ministry of Education. The funds to provide extra experiences and resources for students have been labelled "crucial" and "imperative" by our region's principals, and they say the money needed to run their schools successfully comes laregly from the generous community around them. The Nelson area has hosted around seven school galas, with St Josephs School raising a total of $29,000 for their twilight gala held earlier this month, and principal Mike Burton says the success of the school gala is paramount to the school's day to day running. The school gala is the biggest and only major fundraising event for most schools says Mike and while the government touts free education the reality is most schools would only just get by on the government operational grant. “It barely covers what is needed to run a school. Education is an expensive business. I think our community recognises this as they are always incredibly generous to schools in the region.” Enner Glynn school also did well out of their school gala with principal Isaac Day saying it saw an increase in money raised on last year and the $26,500 will go towards funding a new school playground. He agrees that schools heavily rely on the school gala to see them over the line with funding. “The school gala is crucial to our school, we have a terrific community and we really appreciate the generosity.” Isaac puts the success of the gala down

Auckland Point principal Sonya Hockley says it was their major fundraiser for the year, and that in order to keep up with changing technologies, fund fun and safety compliant play equipment and subsidise school trips, the gala was an imperative event on the school calendar. The funding supplied by the government could run the school if it was careful she says, but in the struggle to enhance learning and provide tools for “21st century learners”, they relied heavily on

The school board has recently decided to shift the time of year the gala is held to ease the pressure off “kind and generous businesses” that sponsor the school galas, with the spring time events often falling around the same time each year. Hampden St School took in around $21,000 profit from their event last year, and held their twilight gala on Friday night, and although the final figures from Friday aren't yet known. Principal Don McLean says the turnout of around 3000 people looked promising and would mean that planned redevelopment of senior classrooms can go ahead. He says the

gala is always a well organised and looked forward to event. As the principal’s association Nelson chairman Don says it is fantastic that schools can fundraise themselves through galas, with community support, enough money to pay for new ICT equipment, upgrades to infrastructure and in one case, partially pay a teacher’s salary. “These enable schools to get the extra iPads, the extra programmes for children in classes, extra library books and all. We’re pretty lucky in Nelson, they’re well supported by their communities.” Don attended a conference in Auckland last week where he visited some schools that do not fundraise at all. “Two of them didn’t do any. That’s none. In Nelson I guess it’s that provincial New Zealand type view that schools are the hearts of communities.” Nelson Christian Academy raised $9000 from their debut gala held back in September and principal Chris George says that the school achieved a fantastic amount of support through sponsors, parents and the community to "continue offering the great curriculum that we have here." Birchwood Primary hold their gala every couple of years and Nayland Primary hold other community events instead of a gala. Officially, Appleby School has raised more money than any school in the Nelson and Tasman region making a record $41,000 from its four hour long annual country fair. Wakefield School and Upper Moutere raised more than $25,000 each and Hope School raised $33,000.

Labour scheme to build more Nelson homes news in BRIEF Labour’s new affordable housing policy is proposing to build 100,000 basic homes over 10 years - a scheme Labour’s leader David Shearer says will create jobs as well as give first home buyers in areas of high house prices such as Nelson the chance to buy a home. The leader of the opposition set out the

details of the ‘KiwiBuild’ policy in his keynote speech at the party’s annual conference in Auckland on Sunday. He says it would be the largest public building programme in 50 years and as well as addressing the problem of housing affordability for first home buyers, it would create jobs.

The scheme would work with the private sector and community housing groups with two thirds of the homes built in the first five years to be in “unaffordable centres”. That includes Auckland, Christchurch, Tauranga, Wellington, Queenstown and Nelson.

A&P ShoW: The Golden Edge Nelson A&P Show is on this weekend in Richmond. The annual show will be held on Saturday and Sunday with a range of events including live entertainment, livestock competitions, shearing, wood-chopping, agricultural demonstrations and displays, carnival rides, side shows and a fantastic range of trade exhibitors.

jUbilEE mArkED WiTh roSES: A plaque to mark a rose bed planted with the variety Diamond Jubilee will be unveiled as part of the annual Rose Day celebrations at Broadgreen on Sunday. The roses were planted to celebrate the 60 years Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne and the plaque will be unveiled from 2pm. The public is welcome to attend.

They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and this rang true for Margaret and David Winnington of Nelson and their children Grace, Tommy, Elizabeth and Sophie on Saturday. Around 2000 people trawled through the second hand goods on offer at the annual Garage Sale held at the Trafalgar Centre, and all proceeds went straight back to non-profit organisations such as Lifeline, Save the Children and The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary. Each group set up a stall and sold off donated goods to fundraise for their cause, while members of the public grabbed a bargain, filling bags and boxes with clothes books and bric a brac. NElSoN To hoST Nzgq: Nelson will host the New Zealand premier of Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto Andaluz for Four Guitars and Orchestra. After a whirlwind 2011 tour schedule of nearly 20 concerts across the length of the country, the NZGQ is quickly developing a following with invitations to perform both locally and overseas. NZGQ played at the Adam Chamber Music Festival earlier this year and 15 concerts nationwide through Chamber Music New Zealand. This Saturday’s concert is at the Nelson School of Music from 8:00pm. Tickets are available at the school of music or from ticketdirect.

Nelson pair head off-road in USA

Nelson adventurers Joe Moreton, left, and John Clifton back in Nelson after their journey through the back trails of America. Photo: Andrew Board.

In fact the temperature was so high it was reaching up to 65 degrees Celsius and 48 in the shade says Joe. It finally took its toll with Joe needed to recoup for three days in a small town motel, fighting heat exhaustion. “It was just such a shock, I’ve never been in a situation like that before, it was desperate. But it got better, we learnt to pace ourselves a little and we were constantly soaking ourselves with water,” says Joe. After that the pair would soak their clothes in cold water each morning before putting them on. As they got higher in Colorado the riding got easier but the views were just as spectacular. “Every day there was something that was just amazing,” says John. “Everything from the Grand Canyon to acres and acres of oil fields where we ended up one day and everywhere you looked all you could see was these little oil heads. The scenery got really dramatic when we got to Utah and the rock formations there. It was incredible.” John, who had never been to America before, says the people were a highlight for him. “They were very polite, friendly and helpful and very respectful. The real America is sandwiched between the little strip on the east coast and the little strip on the west coast. And small town America is really struggling. A lot were very poor. The centre of a town we went to was boarded up and tumbleweed blowing down the street. But they were very happy to see us and to have our business.” With the journey over they say they’ve been “bitten” and already have large scale plans for future trips. Australia is the start but Asia and South America are also on the wish list. “It’s an amazing way to see a country and a very fun way to do it as well,” says John.

The long, paved highways of the United States were built to make long distance travel between its states bearable. But when two Nelson men were plotting their month-long trip across the country the highways were the furthest thing from their minds. Joe Moreton and John Clifton took their offroad motorbikes and travelled from Los Angeles to Colorado and back to Oregon – across six states – on dirt tracks, desert sand and mountain passes. They say it is the best way to see the country and are already planning their next off-road adventure, to Australia. The friends loosely followed an off road track called the Trans America Trail that extends across the country but decided to miss the long "boring" parts in the flat American midwest and picked it up on the eastern edge of Colorado. But first they had to get there from California. They say their first real day off road they decided to follow an old Indian trial in Nevada that John had found, it was not part of the cross country trail. "We set off on this track and by 7.30 in the morning it was over 30 degrees and the sand was getting deeper and deeper and we thought ‘no, on the first day this is not a sensible thing to do’ so we retraced our steps and that was a 250 kilometre aborted loop. I’m glad we did because I think we would have been a vulture’s supper if we continued down that track,” says John. But it wasn't just the dodgy tracks that took their toll on the pair. Joe says the heat was their biggest challenge. "Our first day was the hottest day in July, their hottest month of the year and it was the hottest July since records began. So there we were on the hottest day, of the hottest month in Death Valley, the hottest place on earth."

Cycle trail Primary schools take on kapa haka ‘already a huge success’ Brightwater retailers are praising the Great Taste Cycle Trail, saying it has boosted business in the region, despite being only partially completed. Sprig & Fern Brightwater co-owner Kevin Gear says his business has had to “beef up” the staff and has altered trading hours to cope with the new demand from cyclists on the weekend. He says staff were actively handing out flyers to people on weekends, hoping to make the most of the town’s new visitors. “On Saturdays and Sundays there is definitely a large number of people in the Brightwater area just because they’ve been on the cycle trail,” says Kevin. “We already had bike stands but we probably need more.” Rose Timpson of Brightwater bar and cafe HQ says turnover has increased directly because of the cycle trail. She says a lot of customers use it as a “destination” and cycle all of the way from Nelson for a coffee and a bite to eat. “It is very much weather dependent but going on coffees we could probably do 250 to 300 in one weekend,” she says. Initially, the owners of HQ had not taken the cycle trail’s potential into consideration when opening on the site last year. Kevin expected his business to benefit but says he is surprised at the number of cyclists that have actually used it, despite only having small segments of the trail completed. When the full loop is completed, Kevin believes there will be more cyclists from out-oftown coming through Brightwater. He would be “amazed” if other townships such as Mapua and Wakefield did not benefit once the trail was completed and believed it was a good time for businesses to embrace it. “Businesses should think about how they can meet the requirements on the trail,” he says. Rose says there was huge opportunity for people to open accommodation as Brightwater looks to become even more of a destination.

A collaborative effort of children singing, dancing and sharing food saw around 150 students take part in the first ever Stoke cluster kapa haka Minifest on Thursday night, Broadgreen Intermediate played host to the evening, and with the support of around 200 family members in the audience, each school took to the stage to share their kapa haka performances. With the great show of support from parents and supporters, and an enthusiastic effort from each school the night was a huge success that exceeded all expectations says Broadgreen Intermediate principal Derek Lucic, “We want to build on social, academic and cultural aspirations together, and do better by our Maori community so this is the start of that conversation. “The Minifest is about showcasing our individual character through kapa haka while enjoying a shared experience.” The highlight for the students says Derek, is not only the chance to perform in front of other students but also to appreciate what the other local schools had to offer. “All of the students are just full of energy and excited, it’s a great way for the kids to have a bit of exposure to performing, and to share in what one another are doing,” he says. I have been overwhelmed by the tremendous support of the press and the public in helping me achieve my fundraising goal for the Nelson Regional Hospice. The generosity of all concerned has been heartwarming for this so worthy cause. There will be few of us who have not known loved ones, friend or family who have needed their services, and we can all help to ensure that the Hospice with their wonderful staff is still there in the future. $100,000 is a large sum of money so I give grateful thanks to you all but please never stop giving, whether it's the Pearly Queen collecting or someone else. I shall still be around but perhaps not quite so often. Remember, every coin counts! Shirley Miles (Pearly Queen), Stoke.

I enjoyed your story on George Bennett and really hope what he says is true and he isn't just being naive. • Three container ships and a general carrier, two deliveries of fertiliser, a log ship, a cement ship, and nine large fishing vessel movements kept the port busy this week • The “Wally of the Week” was how it was described to me when the HM staff reported on a jet skier who had no idea of harbour regulations, five knots or two hundred metres from shore. It is unfortunate that guys like this spoil things for all others. Between Haulashore Island and Rocks road there is a 5 knot restriction. This is for the safety of all boaties as there are vessels moored near there, there are frequently swimmers in this area, it is a main thorough fare for yachts, kayaks and paddle boarders. The Harbour Master's office takes a dim view of the ignorance demonstrated by some speedsters as they travel through this way. To that end we will stringently police this speed limit this summer with a view to prosecuting any person who stupidly endangers others by speeding. • I am informed that two guys had a lucky escape this weekend from their overturned dinghy. Luckier than the two who drowned in Auckland from a tragic fishing trip. Always wear your lifejacket, it only takes a moment for the untoward to occur and then you may not be able to get to one.

Funny Guy brings show to Nelson NCC won’t take Guy Williams is embarking on a nation-wide tour and he’s bringing his girlfriend along for the ride. It will be the first time that the former Nelson College student, who claimed the Billy T Award earlier this year, has performed his stand-up routine in his hometown. Guy has become a household name since featuring on TV3’s Jono and Ben at Ten, formerly The Jono Project. His girlfriend, Rose Matafeo, is a host of TVNZ’s U Live show and is a twotime Billy T Award finalist. The pair will be performing their stand-up comedy routines at the Nelson School of Music on Thursday December 13. “My personal dream has always been to drive from small town to small town doing gigs. So we’ve booked what I’d describe as an overly ambitious national tour. We’ve still had zero interest in Rotorua but we’ve had stunning interest in other areas so it’s been pretty good all things considered,” says Guy. Guy says coming back to Nelson is the ultimate dream and was hopeful that it could spark more interest in the comedy industry. While it was scheduled for the Nelson School of Music, the number of preconfirmed bookings will dictate whether the show is in the main auditorium or in the 78-seat Balling Theatre. “Behind the two major centres, Nelson has been our third most successful venue. Maybe if I tell enough relatives about it we can sell that place out,” he jokes. The tour will include 13 shows between Auckland and Christchurch.

part in leaky homes package

Nelson City Council will not take part in the government’s “leaky home package” after it decided the current system was working. The council’s audit, risk and finance committee resolved that the council won’t become a participating territorial authority to the Leaky Homes Financial Assistance Package under the Weather-tight Homes Resolutions Services Amendment Act. The Leaky Homes Financial Assistance Package is a Government initiative aimed at giving homeowners of leaky residential buildings an option to repair their homes without going through the often protracted legal or mediation process. It has been developed collaboratively between the Government and local authorities, represented by Local Government New Zealand and the four most impacted metropolitan councils. Chair of the audit, risk and finance committee, councillor Ian Barker says the committee discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the package. “As we’ve had a very small number of claims related to leaky homes in comparison to the large numbers in other parts of the country, the committee felt the best option was to retain the status quo and assess claims on a case by case basis. However, we have agreed to reassess the option of joining the Leaky Homes Financial Assistance Package following the Governmentled review of the Scheme in 2014.”

Former journo pens new book

Best Island resident Arch Barclay has released a biography on famous gold prospector George Fairweather Moonlight. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Arch Barclay’s life consists of many entertaining stories, but rather than writing about his own, he has gone about penning the life of a famous Murchison gold prospector. The Best Island resident spent many years gathering information on George Fairweather Moonlight, for the biography entitled ‘the Moonlight Legacy.’ Besides his prospecting skills, George Moonlight became the uncrowned “king” of Murchison (Hampden) in the 1870s, as hotelier, storekeeper, postmaster, gold banker and unofficial mediator, says Arch, who has never published a book of this size before. It was 1976 when Arch was first interested in George Moonlight’s life. Arch was working as a newspaper reporter at the time and had to conduct a series of interviews for the Murchison centenary. Having been involved in theatre for most of his life, Arch, along with six or eight other Nelson residents, decided to take part in a show for the occasion. “In the process I heard about Moonlight and I wrote a song

about him, which I sang in the review,” says Arch. “It was a folk song that told his life in song.” But the song wasn’t enough Arch, who spent many years working as a broadcaster and reporter before retiring, went about obtaining more information on the life of George Moonlight, which is now published in the Moonlight Legacy. A lot of the material was produced by the Murchison Museum, including his bankruptcy and court hearings. “Gradually I came across enough information to compile a book out of. I always had the opportunity to correct a few errors that have been constantly repeated along the way,” he says. This is the largest book Arch had ever published and will be officially launched at the Richmond Library on Thursday at 6pm. George Moonlight’s great-grandson Ian Moonlight and his wife Andrea are expected to be present. Copies of the Moonlight Legacy can be bought by emailing Arch at saltgrass@clear.net.nz.

A: As in any social situation, children and adults can get caught up with doing what everyone else does. In this case this choice may be expensive and unhealthy. You are the adult; therefore you are in control of what food you provide for your children. Here are some tips for healthy inexpensive lunches:  Regularly buy ingredients for healthy lunches so there is always food available to prepare.  Help each child write lists of their favourite healthy food  Encourage your children to help you prepare their lunches  Teach your children to bake.  If they are tired of sandwiches, try: - Small wraps filled with meat, or cheese and salad. - Baked potatoes stuffed or plain - Boiled eggs - Chopped up veges and a pottle of savoury dip - Cheese on toast or slice of pizza - Corn on the cob - Home-made pop-corn - Dried fruit, seeds and nuts - Home baking Your children’s friends will soon be asking to have some their lunches! We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

With Robyn Hollis

Wow!! What a busy time of the year it is for us gardeners. Only just managed to get some time to head away to Garden Marlborough last weekend. I do hope some of you got to see this also. John and I loaded the two Mums into the truck and off we went. Due to a hiccup with my health I did not get to any workshops this year but the lovely day we all had on Sunday more than made up for it. The photo says it all really – lots of colour, people, food, music and of course all things garden, from clothes, to frames, to gloves and tools, plants and more plants, furniture and a huge array of yummy honey products and soaps galore!! I also found a new vanilla product and couldn’t resist the beautiful vanilla extract and also a very fragrant vanilla paste. This is made from the pods of the vanilla bean, finely crushed and mixed with oil it is a real flavour burst when using vanilla in cooking. I don’t know about you but the first stop for me is always food!! Chris Fortune was making delicious omelettes just inside the gate, so that was the start, followed by some exquisite “pain de chocolat”. This is a light as air croissant type roll with two (or more) sticks of dark sweet chocolate in the centre – just to die for, and this set us up for a most enjoyable 3 hours or so. I had the strength to buy several plants, some lovely cottage perennials, vege plants and the most delightful hybrid clematis called Gypsy Queen. A gorgeous deep purple lady, she will look great climbing up my wisteria by the deck. Back in the vege garden all is looking fine. The tomatoes are in as are the zucchini (or courgettes), broccoli is nearly harvested and a second lot is underway, beans are up and the lettuces are being cut and given away as I have a few too many. The coriander is bolting so I have cut it back and turned this first pick into coriander pesto.

This is very easy to do and is made with oil, pinenuts, parmesan cheese and garlic just as you make the basil pesto. Not one to measure, I simply fill the food processor bowl with packed coriander leaves and stems. Add approx 1 cup of pinenuts, 3-4 cloves of garlic, 1 cup of good grated parmesan cheese and then blitz. Slowly add a good quality olive oil ( I recommend Supplejack or Moutere Gold ) and blend until it is the desired thickness. Add a pinch of Maldon sea salt and a grind of black pepper and you’re done! This keeps in the fridge for several weeks or you can freeze it in containers for later use. Great in spaghetti sauces, in dressings, on bruschetta, in Asian recipes etc. If you plan to put in a second crop of coriander it is a good idea to put it in a shady spot or perhaps grow it in a pot so you can move it under shade as from now on some of the soft herbs will “bolt” (go to seed) as the temperatures start to warm up. Rocket and some of the mesclun salad greens can also succumb to high temperatures, making them bitter and a little tough. They are really best grown in the spring and autumn.

Tips

• Strawberries should be starting to ripen now so protect them with bird netting. Check for any grey mould forming on the fruit (botrytis) and remove this to the rubbish. The spores can infect good fruit if left lying around. Try to keep the fruit and foliage as dry as possible by lifting it onto pea straw and only watering in the morning. • Polyanthus that have finished flowering should be lifted, divided if necessary and replanted in a shady spot for the summer. • Lift tulips when the leaves have yellowed off. Clean off the soil, leaves and roots and store in a netting bag in a cool dry place. A

The scene at Garden Marlborough last week. dusting with flowers of sulphur is always good. • Remove the old flower heads and seed capsules from azaleas and rhododendrons to stop energy going into seed formation instead of new growth. Just pinch them out carefully so as not to break off the new leaf formation. You can also give them a slight trim at this time. • Prune deciduous magnolias now if necessary. The new shoots that grow this summer will carry next spring’s display. • Roses are now in full swing – they need a feed in November with a good rose fertiliser, also keep deadheading to encourage new blooms and collect any leaves that may have fallen due to blackspot to stop this infection spreading to other plants.

“not a lot”, however the research tells me the following: The Amaryllis is native to South Africa and the Hippeastrum to South America but the genus Amaryllis once contained many species, including Hippeastrums. Now, however, the Amaryllis belladonna is considered to be the only true Amaryllis and the other species have been reclassified ie: hippeastrum. These have been widely hybridised and it is these cultivars which are mainly grown by home gardeners. The Belladonna lily is hardier to frost than the Hippeastrum, which is best grown in pots or in a glass house. I hope that helps! See you next time and happy gardening….

New futsal league ready for action If the Fulton Hogan Basketball League is for the winter months, then the FAV Mobile Solutions Futsal League is for summer. A new futsal league kicked on Sunday at Saxton Stadium and those involved are confident it will be as successful as the very popular and almost iconic Fulton Hogan basketball league. The Inclusive Sports Trust has partnered up with Nelson Bays Futsal and thanks to funding from the Kiwisport Fund and the Lion Foundation along with generous sponsorship from

FAV Mobile Solutions, is able to provide this opportunity for people with supported learning needs to participate in this relatively new sport to Nelson. The Inclusive Sport Trust is a recently formed entity established to promote ability and opportunity through sport. Primarily all members will have the opportunity to participate alongside their peers; to enjoy playing sport at their ability level; to be welcome and to belong as rightful members of the community. Don Martin and Heather Walker from

The Inclusive Sport Trust have every confidence that the new league will be a hit as they know firsthand the value of what is on offer. Having seen the growth of the Fulton Hogan Basketball League from small beginnings to where it is today, 16 teams, 2 grades and involving 120 participants. This is the recipe for success that is being rolled out with the Futsal league. The plan is to begin the Futsal league with intensive coaching provided by Nelson Bays Futsal. Initially games will be played to

enhance skill development. Already there is significant interest but there is always room for anyone to come along and have a go. The FAV Mobile Solutions League is played on a Sunday afternoon. There is a junior programme called ‘Junior Kickers’ which runs on Tuesday afternoons and is all about coaching through fun games and skills and drills to build confidence and ability. This is a similar programme to the successful ‘Junior Jammers’ which was delivered throughout the basketball season.

Junior tennis stars battle it out The region’s top tennis juniors under the age of nine were invited to participate at Friday’s Grasshoppers 8under Invitational Tournament. This event, which was hosted by the Tasman Tennis Centre, is held twice a year and helps identify the top tennis juniors across the district. The boys draw saw top seed Kvido Tayerle of the Stoke Tennis Club in a league of his own, dominating each opponent he faced with ease. Kvido

went the entire tournament without dropping more than two points in each match. Nelson Bays Tennis development officer Lynnie Nevin says Kvido showed mature composure and will be a name to look out for in the future. Second place went to Sam Trice of Upper Moutere. Despite a 16-0 loss to Kvido in one of the earlier matches, Sam went the rest of the tournament unbeaten. The fair play award went to Max Frontiera of

Wakapuaka Tennis Club. In the girls draw, Claudia Miccio of the Stoke Tennis Club won all her matches and showed great control and strength during the tournament. Runner-up was Hannah Young, also of Stoke, who won all her matches except for the 11-4 loss to Claudia. The fair play award went to Holly Watson of Tasman Tennis Club. The next 8under invitational tournament will be held in March next year.

Oh so close for local footballers The QSP Tasman Thistle masters football team were just four minutes away from glory on the Gold Coast. The team featuring players from Richmond Athletic and FC Nelson were up 1-0 against the Beenleigh Lions in the final of the Gold Coast Pan Pacific Games 35 years and over division. Player-coach Andy Morris says the side was looking good until the Beenleigh Lions scored an equaliser in the 86th minute. “It was the last thing we wanted after playing six games straight in the Gold Coast heat,” he says. But Beenleigh wasn’t finished and managed to score the winner in extra time, handing the silver medal to the Tasman Thistle side. “Naturally we are disappointed not to win the gold. It was a hard fought battle as all of the games were played at a very high level. The team performed very well, drawing the first game then winning the next four to be the top qualifier from our pool.” Tasman Thistle was struck down with two key injuries during the tournament with goal keeper Lutz Gerwin breaking his arm and Gary Calderbank picking up a foot injury. Richmond New Life offers alternative church experience Imagine it’s late Sunday afternoon, you are walking into a café, live music is playing, you order a latte, sit down, relate to someone nearby and listen to a short spoken presentation. The topic is relevant to your everyday living, you ask questions and share your opinions and insights on the topic. You contribute and learn at the same time. And you call this going to church. This is what is happening at Richmond New Life every Sunday in a bold new initiative called New Life@5. “We centre our experience around some key words” said Pastor Steve King. “The key words are Word, Worship, Community, Authenticity, Interactive and Empowerment, these are what we are about.” Here at New Life@5, we believe in an experience which we consider to be different rather than better. It’s not ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to

church.” Steve, who has decades of church experience as a Pastor, sees the need to have a unique type of service as people are unique. “Jesus constantly interacted with people, and we see this as a key in today’s world. We have thought about this for some years and now it is a great experience to be doing it. I just love this and so do the people” says Steve.” We have had great feedback from a large number of people attending, comments ranging from the benefit of interaction and discussion, the open and relaxed atmosphere allowing connection, a place for all to have a voice, great Biblical teaching and the expectation of seeing miracles unravel. We love the feedback we are getting and it is obviously meeting a need in our community. It seems that people are finding this to be a safe place where they can explore and do faith and life together.”

The format of New Life@5 is fluid, has variety and every week is different in structure.” We enjoy diverse expressions of music and worship and we love exploring relevant topics from a Christian perspective” says Steve. Jono Martin, Senior Pastor of Richmond New Life, said that this is a strategic development for us as a church. This new idea of one church with two expressions is one we are very excited about and allows us to cater to a greater range of people, flavours and needs. We welcome you to join with us and experience New Life@5 for yourself. You will find us every Sunday at 5pm in the Richmond New Life cafe, 85 Wensley Road, Richmond. For more information please phone 544 1094.

This Sunday’s Classic Hits RunMahana has become a “magnet” for anyone in the region who owns a pair of running or walking shoes. Close to 950 are heading to Woollaston Estates to circuit the undulating countryside course in Nelson’s largest athletic event. Over 500 have chosen the single lap 10km way up on last year’s numbers while the Half Marathon also has a healthy response with 200 doing the double circuit. Children haven’t been forgotten as

they get their chance in the midday BlueBerry IT Mahana Mile with parents allowed to accompany them in their course through the vineyards. All get to relax at the finish listening to Nayland College musician Marley Richards showing off his talents while all wait for prizegiving in what must be one of the most majestic settings in the Moutere valley. TUESDAY 20 November 2012 Births

Broadgreen Intermediate student Luke Morel, 12, pitches a ball to Black Sox pitcher Kurt Schollum during a visit by the national softball team to Nelson last week. Photo: Andrew Board.

Youngsters get tips from Black Sox After playing two games at the Saxton Ballpark and visiting half a dozen schools in Nelson the manager of the national men's softball team had some encouraging words for the sport in Nelson. Eddie Kohlhase took 11 of his squad on a national tour and last week they stopped in Nelson for two days. He says he was impressed with what Nelson has to offer. "You have the best facilities in the country and the talent is very strong. Nelson has a huge softball history and the future looks bright too," he told Nelson Weekly. The Black Sox beat a Nelson invitation team 4-1 on Wednesday night and 8-0 on Thursday night. Both games were played in front of strong crowds.

The team also visited a number of schools in Nelson and Richmond, including two primary schools, Broadgreen and Nelson intermediates and Nelson College. Eddie says his players have enjoyed being on the road. “We don’t play in New Zealand enough, we have to travel to get games so the public doesn’t see a lot of the Black Sox but connecting with the grass roots of the sport like this has been great and the guys have all really enjoyed it. We’ve got a great group men in this team," he says. Nelson Softball CEO Derryn French says the visit was a success for the region and he’d love to see them back playing an international at Saxton Field.
