Today is the day Rugby World Cup at our doorstep
Here we go. For three years Nelson has counted down to the moment we would be thrust on the world stage and host a match at the 2011 Rugby World Cup – the third largest global sporting event in the world. And today it all kicks off with a truly unique event at the Botanics Reserve followed by the debut of our second team, Italy, at Trafalgar Park, when they take on the might of the Russian Bears. That game will be broadcast to millions around the world. But first is a day action-packed with events. The most talked about – and for good reason – is the Re-enactment match at the Bontanics. This event is a fantastic point-of-difference for Nelson and will see dozens of international reporters in attendance says Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio. It will start at 12noon today with a mass haka at the Church Steps; most of the school’s 1200 students will be involved. Spectators will then be encouraged to walk the same route as the students to the Bontantics where a host of activities are planned, including a Victorian dressup competition. At 1pm, the re-enactment of the first game of rugby to be played in New Zealand, between Nelson College and Nelson Rugby Football Club kicks off. Fans will then have a few hours to relax and soak in the atmosphere around the city before the Italian game kicks off at 7.30pm. Organisers are urging ticket holders to get to the ground early and take advantage of the pre-match entertainment, while those without tickets still have the opportunity to buy them at the gate before kickoff. The game is not sold out but will be very close if the expected walk up crowd eventuates. Rugby World Cup in Nelson is not just about today though, events are happening all over the region over the next fortnight, so get out there, get involved and Nelson College’s Danny Rupupere will help lead the school in a mass-haka involving 1200 students at the Church enjoy the biggest event that our city has ever hosted. Steps today at 12noon which will help kick off Rugby World Cup celebrations in Nelson. Photo: Phillip Rollo. wheelchairs mobility scooters walker/canes

When Nelson College and Nelson Rugby Club compete in the Re-enactment of the First Game of Rugby in New Zealand at the Botanics Reserve today, it will not just be the replica uniforms that date back to 1870. The rules and format of play will be based on rugby laws from 1862 which have been interpreted and modified by rugby historian John Goodman and Blair Simpson from Nelson College. With fewer technical rules to follow, the game will appear less structured than modern rugby. With 18 players per side and ten forwards, a highly physical game can be expected. Scrummages feature a minimum of ten players per side and are likely to form into enormous rolling mauls as additional players join in. Don’t expect to see much passing of the ball though, as in 1870 this was considered a cowardly act to avoid contact with an opponent. Another physical aspect from 1870 is “hacking”, where it was acceptable to trip up an opponent and kick them in the shins. Although allowed in early games, this is one of the rules from 1870 that won’t be used in the Re-enactment game. Kicking will form a prominent part of the game, as in 1870 points were scored by kicking the ball over the cross bar, with one point awarded for a drop-kick, conversion or penalty-kick. To earn the opportunity for a conversion, a player had to cross the goal line and ground the ball (“running in”). This act in itself did not earn the team any points, but gave the team a “try” at kicking a goal. Although in 1870 the game was controlled by the captains of both teams rather than a referee. Blair Simpson will act as referee in the Re-enactment game, complete with bowler hat and booming voice as no whistle would have been used in the first game. In 1870, teams would swap ends after each successful kick at goal and games often continued for 3-5 days until two goals were scored to settle the winner. The Re-enactment game, however, will follow a more typical format of a game of two halves of 20 minutes each way. Although Nelson Rugby Football Club holds the honour of winning the first game of rugby in New Zealand, 2-0, either team could come out on top at this re-match 141 years later.

Italians will have too much to Bear Ahead of tonight’s first ever Rugby World Cup game in our city, Nelson Weekly reporter Jonathan McKeown went in search for what spectators can expect from the Italy v Russia clash at Trafalgar Park. When the Russian Bears and the USA Eagles squared-off in New Plymouth last week, one team was certainly watching with avid interest. At their base in Nelson the Italian team studied their upcoming opponents, as Russia faced a five day turnaround before the action at Trafalgar Park tonight. In their Rugby World Cup debut Russia went down to the USA by 13-6, the lowest scoring match at any RWC since 1991. The Azzuri will have high hopes for a rousing victory, with the possibility of backline flair being added to the traditional forward based game-plan employed by Italian coach and former Springbok charge Nick Mallet. Italy has a strong World Cup pedigree and the two-time quarterfinalists are full of professionals playing for the top European clubs. They have genuine world-class players including power-house tight-head prop Martin Castrogiovanni, renowned scrum destroyer and Italy’s top try scorer in the 2008 Six Nations. Mauro Bergamasco’s supreme skills have seen the quality
loose-forward play international games at halfback and on the wing. In contrast, Russia are almost all amateurs apart from Australian-born lock Adam Byrnes, who may be familiar to Super 15 fans after playing for the recently-formed Melbourne Rebels. A strong second-row includes lock Kirill Kulemin who ply’s his trade in the French Top 14 for Castres Olympique. Pacey winger Vasily Artemyev recently signed with the North Hampton Saints and is set to become the first Russian to play in The Italian rugby team during a Captain’s Run on Trafalgar Park on Monthe Aviva English Premiership. The last meeting between the continental neigh- day, ahead of their clash with Russia. Photo: Blair Hall/Photoaction. bors in 2006 was a bath, the Italians cruising to a 67-7 victory over the Bears in Moscow. Since that 2007 Rugby World Cup qualifier howEnjoy the GAMES ever, Russian rugby has gone from strength to at home strength with a National Rugby Academy established in 2006 and the growth of Russian Sevens, highlighted by Moscow winning the hosting rights to the Sevens World Cup in 2013. Italy has made a host of changes from the side that lost 32-6 to the Wallabies. Mallet swung the axe in search of tries after Australia’s thrilling loss to Ireland made securing a bonus-point vital. The five points are now essential if the Italians hope to progress beyond the group stage. On paper, Italy have this one in the bag, Russia are ranked 19th in the IRB world rankings eight below Italy – but on the day rankings count for nothing, a fact Kiwis know all too well.

Nelson now a two-team town
Take the bus says NCC
You may see flags, jerseys and supporters from other nations around the city but locals have thrown their support behind two teams – the All Blacks and Italy. Italy has enjoyed huge support from locals since touching down three weeks ago and they have been equally giving, taking time to sign autographs and chat with local fans. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he always hoped Nelson would get behind the Italians and he is thrilled with the support they have got so far. Of course the All Blacks remain local’s number one team but if the hype so far is anything to go by, the Azzuri can expect huge support from Nelson at Trafalgar Park tonight. “I hope Nelson will rock tonight,” says Aldo. “It should be huge.”
A
Nelson City Council is urging rugby fans to take the bus and get to the game early ahead of Nelson’s three Rugby World Cup pool games. Nelson is hosting three Rugby World Cup games starting with the Italy versus Russia game on September 20. NCC Rugby World Cup 2011 communications advisor Angela Ricker says the city will not have the same transport issues that Auckland faced on the opening night, as Nelson is a lot smaller scale, and a traffic management plan has been put in place since the start of the year and signed off by Rugby World Cup 2011 New Zealand. “We have no concerns that it will be a nightmare. We’ve managed matches of 10,000 at the D parkCbefore and while this is a 18,000 match, we think we’ve got ourselves in control,” she says. However Angela is strongly encouraging people to get to the game early to avoid a late rush and the public transport systems are the best ways to do that, she says. “Obviously the public transport is convenient, it’s easy, you get dropped off right outside. It’s cheap and it’s there for people.” Spectator parking will be available in Wakatu, Montgomery and Buxton Squares, at Neale Park (not available if we’ve had heavy rain) and at Akersten St. Grove St is the designated Taxi/Shuttle bus drop off point. There are private vehicles drop off areas on Collingwood St north of Elliot St and on Halifax St outside the Library. A Park and Ride bus service will be operating between Richmond and Nelson, dropping spectators off in Millers Acre Car Park. Buses will run from Richmond to Nelson via Waimea Rd every 15 minutes between 5.15 pm and 6.15pm and from Haven Stoke to Nelson every Nelson 15 minutes via Tahunanui from 5.15 to 6.15pm for the September 20 and 27 matches. The buses will stop at the normal bus stops. Return journeys will take place after the game until approximately 10.15pm A charge of $4, from Richmond, and $3, from Stoke, each way will apply.

Ro-guish art attack Andrew Board
Nelson was the victim, or perhaps the benefactor, of an urban art attack co-ordinated over the weekend by a mysterious local artist. Art was plastered on walls at Fashion Island, Bridge St, Montgomery car park and other locations around the city on Saturday evening and Sunday. “Ro Guish”, the local artist behind the unofficial redesign of the Nelson sign on Atawhai Dr, led the weekend raid, which included urban art being plastered on walls. Owners of the buildings did not know about the raid, which was designed to give the town a positive facelift ahead of the Rugby World Cup today. A series of local artists completed the work but welcomed the guest appearance of renowned art forger “Goldie” who came to town especially to take part in the action. Reaction was mostly positive with one retailer calling Nelson Weekly on Monday morning wanting to know who did it. “It’s great, I think they should do more of it.” Fashion Island manager Susan Matz says she liked the art but wishes they got in touch with her. “I can’t condone it because they didn’t ask, but I like it and if they had of asked I would have supplied some canvass for them to do it on.” The art was put on newsprint and was pasted on walls. In an email to Nelson Weekly by “Ro Guish” before the raid was tantalisingly vague but did say: “Soon we’ll be bombarded with tourists/rugby cup nutters, and we need to doll-up our wee city with works of the amazin’ artists and creative folk we have livin’ here! There’s a wee loop-hole in the
TRELISE
NEW ART: Fashion Island manager Susan Matz, checks to see how well stuck on the urban art is that appeared on her wall over the weekend. Insert: more “urban art” on the walls of Fashion Island. Photo: Andrew Board. council’s policy for ‘urban’ art – and there’s an opportunity for us arty buccaneers to have a bit o’ fun! Frazzle them scurvy council bureaucrats, bloody oath yes!” It is understood one of the artists got themselves in trouble on Saturday, after the owner of the Mid-City Lodge caught them writing a poem on their wall.
Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says he heard of the attack on Monday morning and says having Australiasia’s largest urban art exhibition [the Oi You! festival] is going to attract urban artists to the region. “So far all the urban art around the region has been positive and well-received.” Ro then sent a congratulatory email to
the artists on Monday: “Ahoy you lot! Ye art looks great! Does Nelson proud. And hopefully no-one got arrested…” Nelson police say they are reviewing CCTV footage of two men “in their 50’s or 60’s,” who were caught writing their poem on the wall of the Mid City Lodge as a complaint by its owner.

Men of Nelson, learn the haka Ever watched the begining of an All Blacks game and tried to do the haka? Or perhaps watched someone butcher it? Fashion Island wants to help you not only look good, but know what you’re doing. Fashion Island manager Susan Matz says the centre is bringing in haka expert Madson Elkington to teach fathers and sons of Nelson the haka, while the women of the home enjoy some shopping and lunch in a cafe. “Men and sons of Nelson, men from other lands, this is your opportunity to learn our heritage and be part of an amazing event at Fashion Island,” says Susan. The event is called, “Learn to do the Haka – Spirit of Life” and will be held at the central courtyard of Fashion Island from 10am this Saturday.

EXCITED: Auckland Point School students with their MDF rugby players amongst the daffodils on Haven Rd. Photo: Jonathan McKeown.
Schools get into cup spirit For twelve years the students in Vincent class at Auckland Point School have been installing their own brand of street art in Nelson. From sheep to pink flamingoes, but this year it took on a rather rugby twist. For the 2011 exhibition the students decided to put up rugby players from Italy, Russia, USA and Australia to reflect the schools support for the four teams playing in Nelson during the Rugby World Cup, says student Samantha Wilson. And like any good artist keen for exposure Samantha revealed that they put their rugby players out in the daffodils because it’s on a main road and lots of people will see them. In the past the class had used cardboard cut-outs, that don’t mix to well with water. The children thought that was a recipe for “piles of soggy weet-bix,” says teacher Judi Hansen.

So this year varnished MDF board was in use. The process started by sketching action figures on paper with older pupils used as models in action poses, they then sketched them on MDF board which some skillful parents helped to cut out with the jig-saw, then screwed into tomato plant steaks. Vincent class then painted the players in the team’s national colours, with Nelson artist Sandy Haywood helping with the finer details. The children thoroughly enjoyed making the artworks and were enthusiastic when rugby was chosen as the theme. “There is certainly rugby fever at the moment,” says Judi. If you’re driving along Haven Road you may notice something “a little cheeky” hidden among the players, a Kiwi dressed in all black holding a golden trophy.

Suffrage day celebrated in Nelson
FREE iPad 2 *
On September 19, 1893 the Governor of New Zealand, Lord Glasgow, signed a new Electoral Act into law. As a result of this ground-breaking legislation, New Zealand became the first country in the world to grant all women the right to vote, and our fierce suffragists seized their place in history. September 19 is Suffrage Day, and besides recognising the courage, determination and foresight of the 19th century women, in 2011 it serves to mark “the significant and diverse” contribution women make to New Zealand society today, says Gay Northcott, president of the Nelson branch of the national council of
women. In celebration of the occasion NCW Nelson held a ‘blast from the past’ event complete with 1890 era memorabilia. Speeches from the leading suffragists of the day weren’t just read, they were retold by animated enthusiasts dressed in the fashion of the era when they were first heard. Often distressing, but ultimately successful, the personal stories were told of the leaders who went on to found the National Council for Women of NZ who continued to challenge for equal pay, equal sharing of matrimonial property, women on juries and in parliament.

Advertorial.
Spirit of Adventure gets boost from Hyundai The Spirit of Adventure, the sailing programme developing young New Zealanders, is now backed by Hyundai. And this weekend, Auckland Anniversary, Kiwis can share the spirit. The rapidly growing and increasingly iconic car brand has announced an on-going sponsorship with the Spirit of Adventure Trust, with a weekend-long celebration at Princes Wharf. “A journey on The Spirit of New Zealand is one of the most incredible experiences any young person can have, and this is the opportunity for people to learn more about it. At Hyundai New Zealand, we love the spirit of adventure.” The Spirit of Adventure is a unique sailing programme started in the 1960s which has now given more than 75,000 young New Zealanders fun access to a character development programme, giving them the opportunity to explore and grow. They don’t simply get shown how to sail a ship, they learn to be self-reliant, to get on with complete strangers, to take responsibility and to communicate. And then they return to shore to surprise their
family and friends. In those few days at sea they seem to have become taller, braver and more confident. They’ve also built bonds that will last a lifetime. “It’s a perfect fit with Hyundai,” says Mr Ruddenklau. “Just as ‘Spirit of Adventure’ takes on a meaning beyond a sailing programme, so Hyundai represents more than just vehicles. We become part of the lives of everyday New Zealanders, both through our highly advanced range of vehicles and through the Hyundai New Zealand network which is one hundred percent locally owned and operated at national and local dealership level. We share that wider Kiwi trait to live adventurous and meaningful lives as part of our community – to try new things, to look forward, with the right kind of energy. “Hyundai is most excited to be part of this amazing, life-changing Spirit of Adventure Trust, which is building up the next generation, filling these young people with confidence, giving them experiences and friends which will last a lifetime,” says Mr Ruddenklau.

Nelson’s Peasants win Smokefreerockquest Phillip Rollo Nelson band The Peasants have set themselves up for stardom after becoming just the second Nelson band to take out the national final of Smokefreerockquest. The seven-piece Garin College band -- comprising of Georgia Nott, siblings Chris and Abbey Phillips, Joseph Corban-Banks, Clark Hinton, Rupert Wockner and Holly Tippler -- went one better than their second place from last year at the Claudelands Arena in Hamilton on Saturday, bringing New Zealand music’s most prestigious prize for secondary school students back to Nelson for the first time since the Exploding Poppies won in 1992. Georgia says she was lost for words and “nearly broke down crying” when the group was announced winners for 2011. “I’m not even joking I think there’s a tear on the envelope that holds our certificates,” says the lead vocalist. The band had discussed who they thought was going to win at the conclusion of all six performances, and when Whakatane High School’s Attics Sky’s were named third and Sacred Heart’s Massard picked up second, the cameras focussed on The Peasants. “There was like ten cameras just on us, so that was a bit of a giveaway,” says Clark, the band’s lead guitarist. “We were thinking well it’s either first place or nothing.”
There was pressure on the band to better last year’s placing but Georgia says they all went on the stage confident in what they could achieve. “I think we were more nervous waiting for the results.” The prize package for first place will give The Peasants a helping hand into the New Zealand music industry. The package includes a NZ On Air new recording and music video grant worth $10,000, a place on the NZ On Air Kiwi Hit Disc, musical gear to the value of $10,000 from the Rockshop, recording time and radio promotional support for a single. “It’ll be all over C4, plus we’ll get air time on the Edge, so we’re pretty set,” says Chris. The music video is likely to be for the song Giants. “We haven’t quite discussed it yet, but it is looking like Giants. We’ve worked on that the most so far.” So what’s next for The Peasants? Recording happens this weekend and the music video will be shot the following one. “After that we’ll do some more writing and play some more gigs.” Previous winners have gone on to form such bands as Kids of 88, Die! Die! Die! Goodnight Nurse, The Black Seeds and Opshop. “Smokefreerockquest is the best thing you can do at school if you’re a musician. The whole experience, even if you don’t get first in a regional final or a national final, it’s still the experience of playing on stage, it’s awesome.”

Eyeing up retired life
Stoke optometrist Graham Elder ends his long career, most recently at the Visique Harrington Eyecare in Stoke, at the end of the month. Photo: Andrew Board.
Graham Elder got in the optometry business to help people with their eyes, so imagine his shock when at his first job, about 40 years ago, a woman came rushing in with handfuls of human hair and demanded he buy it. “I was a bit taken a back, but figured out that she was selling hair and thought optometrists were in the business of buying hair,” he says. “It didn’t take long to convince her otherwise, fortunately.” Also, perhaps fortunately, that incident on Auckland’s infamous “K Road” was the strangest moment of Graham’s long career that this month will come to an end. Graham, who has spent the last 14 years working from Stoke, will retire at the end of September. He says he will leave with “mixed feelings”, including sadness at leaving his loyal staff and clients behind, some of whom are known to travel some distance just to see him. Graham is a former owner of the Visique

Harrington Eyecare, or Stoke Eyecare as it was known under his ownership, before selling to Tim Harrington and Richard Newson in 2004. He continued to work in the practice until now and says he is looking forward to spending more time in the garden, travelling, climbing and doing Tai Chi. He says the industry has changed a lot over the years, especially with the introduction of new technology, but the basics are still the same. “People still come to us if they are having problems with their eyes and it is still our job to help them.” When owner of Stoke Eyecare, Graham says the business grew tremendously and he did as much as he could to support the local community, donating to local schools and clubs. While Graham may not see much of his long-time customers anymore, he says he will visit his former work mates as often as possible.
NEWS IN BRIEF • A dawn ceremony is being held at Anzac Park this Saturday for the unveiling of the 28th Māori Battalion Waharoa, a tribute to veterans of World War II who have passed away and enlisted in or have whakapapa to Te Tau Ihu. Whakatū (Nelson) will welcome Lieutenant General The Right Honourable Sir Jerry Mateparae, New Zealand’s 20th Governor General, to take part in the ceremony. The waharoa, or gateway, is the first memorial of its kind in the region to acknowledge Māori soldiers’ contribution to the New Zealand war effort. The memorial is being unveiled in conjunction with the visiting Italy Rugby Team here for Rugby World Cup 2011. Members of the 28th Battalion fought side by side with Italian soldiers during the war. Representatives from the Italy Rugby Team will attend the ceremony. The dawn ceremony begins at 5am. • Bells will ring for peace in Nelson on Wednesday 21 September – the United Nation’s International Day of Peace. The cathedral bells will ring at 12.30pm, followed by St Mary’s Church at 12.40. Be part of the day by ringing a bell or pausing to reflect on how individuals can help to create a more peaceful world. • The HMNZS Rotoiti and HMNZS Taupo will be berthed at Port Nelson this weekend.

After spending a day as a photographer at the Nelson Weekly, 15 year-old Chelcie Phillips had acted well above her age – until she sat down for her end-of-day interview and was asked the best part of her day: “ohmygod, meeting the Italian rugby team, I can’t wait to tell my friends,” she squealed. Chelcie was at Nelson Weekly as part of Waimea College’s work watch scheme where students in Year 10 have the opportunity to work a day at a local business before deciding on what subjects to take next year. Chelcie says photography is one subject she is interested in because her mum is a wedding photographer. During her day at the Weekly she took photos for an advertising feature, street talk, file photos and, of course, the Italian rugby team when they met students at St Joseph’s School (see page 4 of our rugby wrap for photo). Chelcie says using the professional cameras and seeing how the office worked were also highlights for the day. “It was fun, I really enjoyed seeing how it worked and what it’s like to work for a newspaper.”

Gift from playful Lions now a Nelson icon In 1964 the newly-formed Nelson Lions Club took on the task of turning a “bit of scrub” into a Nelson icon. And 47 years later some of the original items still survive – including the train, castle, whale and turtles – and generations of Nelson children have enjoyed playing in the area. Three of the original Lions that spent many Saturday’s working on the playground say they are thrilled it has become a part of Nelson, if not a little perplexed as to why some of their
items have since been pulled out by council and OSH for “safety reasons”. But they are proud to see the legacy they created still full with local kids enjoying themselves. Warwick Marshall, Peter Vining and Mick Harte are three Lions that were a part of the original planning of the playground and say when they first decided to build it, Nelson City Council were more than obliging. “They were delighted because this was just a wasteland, a bit of scrub really and they were happy that a bunch of blokes were willing to come in and do the
hard yards to fix it up. We didn’t have to worry about consents back then; we just got on and did it.” That meant the club held a community petticoat auction to raise money – 500 pounds in the first year – and went about organising working bees every Saturday to clear the land and build the playground. Warwick says the camaraderie amongst the men was fantastic at the working bees. “A few beers at the end of the day was always an incentive. The ladies would bring down morning tea and at the end of the day we would go and get some beers from across the road.” But after a hard day’s work a swim in the nearby ocean was not a temptation say the men: “Bugger that, we didn’t want to waste our time, we wanted the grog,” they joked.
Since those early days the playground has continued to be developed piece-by-piece to keep it current and up-to-date. Peter says it is rewarding to see generations of people using the playground. “You could see the benefit of the place and that was good to see, there were kids all over the place and it has become one of the icons of Nelson.” Warwick remembers some opposition amongst the community when the idea was first mooted, “in typical Nelson fashion”. “One of the mayors classic remarks was ‘we don’t want this beach turning into another Napier’s Marine Parade’.” But the project got the green light and because of that and the hard work of the Lions, Tahunanui beach will forever be associated with the Lions Playground.

Good Neighbour loves street spirit Cherie Johansson loves her street so much not even a hill slipping into her back door can sway her against it. Cherie won a Good Neighbour of the Year award, with several of her neighbours nominating her. She says the award was a nice surprise but it could have been given to any number of neighbours on Fountain Pl. Cherie is the fifth and final Good Neighbour winner that Nelson Weekly has profiled after the awards last month. Her neighbours say Cherie is a huge asset to the street, organising street parties (which often end up on her deck), trimming trees, sharing meals, opening her house to visiting families and friends of her neighbours, keeping an eye out for other neighbours, feeding pets and offering rides to those in the street who can no longer drive. Another neighbour says she has “cemented the communication between all neighbours” and another that she is an “outstanding networker”. The neighbour who lost the land was due to leave for communities, I wish to nominate Cherie as the best a three month overseas holiday so Cherie took over ever neighbour one could wish for.” Cherie says she is already getting her list sorted for all dealings with EQC and a “creeping slip” since. Her chief nominator, Lynly Selby-Neal, says the win next year’s awards. “There are so many people on this will hopefully give back to Cherie some of what she street that deserve this, it’s a street award really.”

Hunt on for top tenant Time to mow the lawns, give the house a spring clean and be extra nice to the landlord, because nominations are now being accepted to see who is the city’s top tenant. Nelson Property Investors Association announced it is holding a Tenant of The Year Competition last week with nominations open as from today. The New Zealand Property Investors Federation, to which the Nelson PIA is affiliated hold an annual competition to recognise the Landlord of the Year, however there is no national recognition of tenants. Nelson PIA has therefore decided to hold a local competition to recognise good tenancy in the region. “This is the first year of the competition and it is designed to celebrate good tenants and recognises the importance of tenants for property owners,” says Nelson PIA president Godfrey Watson. “Too often we hear of the negative aspects of the tenant/ landlord relationship. Whilst a small portion of tenants do cause problems they are in fact very much in the minority. Unfortunately the small number causing problems usually
grab the headlines. We want to change that negative focus and recognise the positive contribution tenants make. Most tenants are good people, taking good care of a rental property and paying their rent on time.” The Nelson PIA aims to encourage best practice amongst landlords through education and support of its members. Part of that process is to encourage a healthy relationship with tenants and recognition of the vital part they play in the business of property investment. Although the competition is being run by the Nelson PIA, a tenant can be nominated by any landlord in the Nelson and Richmond area. Entrants will be judged on five criteria - relationship between tenant and landlord, care of the rental property, care of the grounds, relationship with neighbours, rent paid on time. Landlords are encouraged to nominate their tenants with judging will take place in November with winners announced on November 30. Entry forms can be obtained by going to www.nelson.nzpif. org.nz

Most Nelsonians would have never heard of the ‘Grand Ole Opry’, but for a couple of the regions most talented young singers, performing at the home of country music in Nashville, Tennessee tops their list of goals. The much-treasured American genre doesn’t have a huge following in New Zealand, but right here in Nelson we have some prodigious talent with big dreams and lofty ambitions. Arianne Baker, 20, and Rebecca Scholfield, 15, already have a long list of achievements on their resume. Both were recipients of the Camerata Country Music Scholarship, won in different years as only one New Zealand recipient is chosen each year to attend the respected music course in Tamworth Australia. In June, Arianne picked up the Senior Overall prize at the Golden Valley Country Music Awards with Rebecca taking out the Intermediate Overall. Janet Waever of the Nelson Country Music Club says Nelson has even more of these “up and coming” stars, there is also Abbey Hahn and Laura Lowe who have been winners of sections they have entered at various awards around New Zealand. Youth culture has a strong current and country music is not immediately associated with a popular movement, so it would be tough for younger person to swim against the tide. Rebecca says her friends at Nelson College for Girls have been really supportive, “At first they didn’t understand, now they think it’s kind of cool that I’ve got my own thing”.
For Rebecca it’s the simple things about country music that make it so appealing. “I love country music so much because the lyrics and melody are so easy to relate to and there is always a story told within the lyrics”. Arianne believes the traditional stereotypes of cowboy hats and line dancing are being broken down. “There’s a lot more to it than Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers. I definitely think it’s getting better and a lot of thanks goes to Taylor Swift [the young American artist who’s 2008 album ‘Fearless’ won the Grammy for best album].” However, there is certainly room for the classics, Arianne is inspired by legends like Chris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash, and you can hear those influences in “Honey & Wine”, the duo she recently formed with Russell Mead. For both the girls it is their families who have been their true role-models and nurtured their talents, Arianne started singing country music at about nine years-old, it was “always played at home since I was little”. Rebecca got into country music because her grandmother, a life member of the Nelson Country Music Club, has been singing country music for over 40 years. Arianne encourages anyone who is interested in country music, music or singing in general to come along to the Nelson Country Music Club at the Suburban Club, “They do so much to help and encourage anyone who is starting off.” That’s where these two started, and it seems they are destined for Grand Ole things.

Car vs Bus?

Q: My Dad wants to give me a car
to get to work. I told him I thought a car would cost me more than the bus. What do you think? A: The overall cost of owning and running a car can be as much as $70.00 a week including $30 fuel. Calculate car costs first as yearly costs and then divide into weekly costs: Maintenance – $5 to $20 a week Petrol - calculate a weekly amount based on past use Warrant of fitness - $2 a week Registration - $6 to $10 a week Insurance – varies, between $2 and $15 a week for 3rd party or between $7 and $50 a week for full insurance Parking costs Road user charges - for a diesel vehicle Add all weekly amounts up and compare the total to the weekly cost of taking public transport. I think owning and running a car would be more expensive. You have to weigh up the convenience against the cost.

IN BRIEF RUGBY LEAGUE: The Tasman Titans claimed their second win of the season with a 46-28 result over the Southland Rams in Invercargill. The Titans face Otago this week. FOOTBALL: Nayland College footballer Gagame Feni has scored a contract with ASB Premiership champions Waitakere United and has his eyes firmly set on a possible future date with Barcelona. While the second best side in New Zealand - only behind professional outfit the Wellington Phoenix - will not compete against the European champions anytime this year, a win in this coming O-League would book the West Auckland side a spot at the coveted FIFA World Club Championship for 2012, something the Nayland College first XI captain says made the move north an obvious one. “This is another level for me to carry on,” Gagame says. “This is a big step up for me and I can see training already is quite difficult, and it’s going to be a big year for me and my future.” RUGBY SEVENS: Entries are now open for the Tasman Invitational Sevens tournament in Richmond this month. Bringing back A(C)OB BACK WITH THE OLD BOYS: Athletic College Old Boys president Matt Toynbee has help resurrect the cricket club after it folded in 2005. Photo: Jonathan McKeown. Jonathan McKeown Winning doesn’t always mean success and after having to fold for financial reasons in 2005, the same year they won the Nelson senior cricket championship, Athletic Old Boys cricket club is proof of that. But just six years later, thanks to the hard work of a few and the support of many, A.O.B. will return to the crease for another innings as Athletic College Old Boys, and they are aiming to win back their title. “We would like to win and I’m confident we are doing a lot of things right,” says club president Matt Toynbee. “One of the positive aspects about starting anew is having the opportunity to set systems up properly and start as we mean to carry on.” That’s where having a top draw coach comes in handy, and if A.C.O.B.’s acquisition of a coach is anything to go by, they have already started ahead of the pack. Gary MacDonald is pretty well known in cricketing circles; he was the Canterbury first class coach for many seasons and was responsible for overseeing the development of many of New Zealand’s top test stars like Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle, Chris Cairns, Craig McMillan and Shane Bond. “He is one of the top three coaches in the country,” says Matt, “he is certainly a great asset to, not only the club but also to Nelson cricket full stop.” AOB will take the place of Waimea College in the senior competition and will play against other Nelson teams Wakatu, Stoke/Nayland, Waimea Toi Toi United, Wanderers and Motueka. Matt has been the main mover and shaker in getting the club back together again, and being a former captain of New Zea-

land age grade sides, he knows leadership. A major goal of the club is to have a strong brand of coaching in the club and to take that out into the community, including coaching in schools. The evidence is already there to back this up, the special relationship ACOB has with Nelson College allowed the duo to collectively secure the services of Gary, who is already into his work at the college. “We’re calling ourselves A.C.O.B, because we want to acknowledge the relationship we have with college and hopefully bring those players through our system and club,” says Matt. Of course Matt is not alone in reigniting the club, a couple of “old A.O.B. boys” who shared his passion for the club – including John Gully, Hugh Gully, John Baumfield and Collin Hosking – jumped on board and have been the main drivers. But there have also been young players keen to be involved like Gregg Chitty, and Luke Toynbee. Matt’s hope is to bring Luke and Gregg through the administration system, he says the older guys’ interest was always to get the club up and going again, but then to encourage other guys to step up when they are comfortable and take the club forward once a few systems are in place. One arrangement that has already been made is for the club to return to their traditional home ground at the Botanic Reserve, Matt reckons it’s quite a special home venue. “It has to be one of the best club grounds in New Zealand, it’s got a lovely setting and on a Saturday afternoon people out walking the centre of New Zealand can sit down on the boundary with some lunch and watch a bit of action.” AOB’s first competitive match will be in about three weeks when the senior cricket competition begins.

Touch at Tahunanui has become an institution in Nelson over the past decade and this weekend is your opportunity to be a part of the action this summer. This Sunday, Nelson Touch is hosting its registration day at the Turf Hotel, this is the best way to register your team for touch. The registration day is the only one Nelson Touch will be hosting this year, so the only chance to make sure you get your team involved. Whether it's a work team, school team or a group of mates, Nelson Touch module manager Aleisha Hart says she is keen to see as many people as possible involved this year. "Touch is so huge now and we get pretty close to filling the module, so the sooner people sign up the more likely they will get to play this year. There is nothing worse than having to turn teams away because they forgot to register." The registration is at the Turf Hotel garden bar this Sunday from 3 to 6pm. The competition starts on October 13 and will once again run on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the Tahunanui Playing Fields.

Dancealott’s Leah Tinetti, 17, Jared Neame, 18, Zara Gillespie, 15, Liam Reid, 16, Victoia Hillman, 16, Jayden Lilley, 16, Nathan Tonk, 13, and Chelsea Harvey, 13 are off to compete at the Australian Championship in December. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Ballroom dancers off to take on Aussies An eight-strong group of young ballroom and latin dancers are off to Australia on December 7, ready to tackle the best of both sides of the Tasman at Australian Championship. Leah Tinetti, 17, and Jared Neame, 18, are Dancealott’s best hope for a top three finish, after two fourth places in as many years for Leah, says dance teacher June Alexander. “It’s a new partnership, and there are many new partnerships in here, but of course we will go over there to win it. I’d put them in the top six in the South Island definitely,” she says. “Everyone is going to get a placing.” The dancers practice in five hour sessions and their experience varies. Leah, Jared, Zara
Gillespie, 15, Liam Reid, 16, Victoria Hillman, 16, and Jayden Lilley, 16, all will compete in the youth grade while Nathan Tonk, and Chelsea Harvey, both 13, will compete in the junior grade. But as well as ages, each dancer competes against others in the same “level” as them. Leah and Jared are level 4-5, while the rest are all 1-2. The Dancealott dancers are hosting a fundraising comedy hypnotist evening at the Stoke Memorial Hall on Friday October 14 and Saturday October 15 to help ease the costs of their trip. The evening will be performed by the hypnotist Gerard V, and tickets can be bought from Hogeys Surf, Just Costumes, Queen St Fruit & Veg, Angelica Flowers, Moutere Motors and Whitwells Menswear.

Golf club sizing up kids
Nelson Golf Club will have a youthful streak this Sunday, as part of the Get in the Game programme being run by New Zealand Golf. The day is to encourage children to pick up a club and give golf a go says Tasman golf development manager, Chris Pugh. “Often kids only get into golf because they have a family association. Their parents or grandparents play, but we want to change that, we have great facilities here and it is not expensive for children to play golf.” The free open day is being held this Sunday at the Nelson Golf Club from 1pm. Chris says junior beginner membership is only $41 a year with professional coaching available on top of that. “We want to make these juniors feel welcome, a golf club can be an imposing environment but we want to give them a hand and get them excited about the sport.” The open day is being held at the same time as Glyn Delany’s golf expo at the club but Chris says Glyn and trainee professional Sean Riordan will be available to help teach kids some shots and the best golf technique.
Registration Day Nelson Golf Club head professional Glyn Delany and trainee professional Sean Riordan will be on hand to show youngesters a golf tip or two at the Get in the Game golf open day for children this Sunday from 1pm. Photo: Andrew Board.

Mixed Open, Mixed Social, ON THE HOP: Runners pound the Tonga Beach sand during the Abel Tasman Coastal Classic on Saturday. Photo: Paul Webster Photography.
Nelson’s Costley win Classic Phil Costley needed a long run before next month’s Auckland Marathon and what better place could he pick in his own backyard than Saturday’s 18th Abel Tasman Coastal Classic. The 36km from Awaroa Lodge to Marahau is testing, the equivalent of a 42.2km marathon, with it’s more than a few undulations as the course along the coastline transcends from the beach to the native lands above. From the airstrip it was all Costley though as he charged to bhe front, taking control from whoever wanted to take up the chase. Nelson’s other most notable athletic find, Graeme Taylor, was like Costley, in the 40-49 age group ranks and
& Sausage Sizzle
he put in an admirable performance (2.31.50), which on any other day would have guaranteed him a win. But the ‘Master’ himself was already warmed down and watered - 2.22.50 was the time Costley stopped the clock, 41 seconds slower than his reverse route run back in 2002 but fast enough to ‘destroy’ Colin Rolfe’s age group record by over twenty minutes and likely to now last for an eternity, unless he gives it another ‘nudge’ next year. The three event ‘surviviors’, Colin Rolfe, Chris Gates and Owen Rowse all performed admirably. Colin, 2 ‘ticks’ over 3 hours to win the Men’s 50-59 grade with Gates second while Rowse also made the podium as Men’s 60+ winner.

TUESDAY 20 September2011
Olympic legend Harold Coming Soon Nelson to be remembered Nelson’s premier track and field competition has been remodelled and named after late Olympian Harold Nelson. Harold was New Zealand’s longest living Olympian, before passing on July 1. The long distance runner had a glittering career that was highlighted by a gold medal at the 1950 British Empire Games in the 6 mile. He finished second in the 3 mile at the same games and was New Zealand team captain and flag bearer at the 1948 Olympic Games. The Harold Nelson Classic will take place at Saxton Oval, in front of a near completed brand new pavilion, on November 26 and is already attracting numerous entries from out of town as a result of the closure to QEII Stadium in Christchurch. The Harold Nelson Classic replaces the Hester Shield Classic on the Athletics Nelson calendar. The Hester Shield was an inter-club competition that ran for 75 years between Nelson and Marlborough, although its original format was altered last year following Marlborough’s failure to provide a sufficient amount of athletes. Competitors will again compete for individual accolades only, this year. “This meet has huge potential,” says Athletics
Nelson head-coach Greg Lautenslager. “One of the reasons I wanted a meet that we could open up to anyone is that we could get better competition. With the destruction of the QEII track, they don’t have an all weather track in Christchurch, which means we could see a lot of their competitors up here.” Greg says Nelson’s New Zealand 200m and 400m champion Alex Jordan has also been spreading the word and has a handful of top sprinters, hurdles and throwers interested in coming to the meet. “This could be the start of a very long and successful meet.” Athletics Nelson had originally called for the Saxton Oval track to be named the Harold Nelson Track, and while Greg says that will “eventually happen,” he thinks Harold would be proud to be named after the competition. “His family was very touched, I think he’d be very, very happy and pleased, and somewhere up there he will be at the meet with his stopwatch in his hand.” Harold shot the starting gun for the ceremonial opening lap at the Saxton Oval athletics track last season. Saxton Oval will also host the South Island Secondary School Athletics Championship on March 31, 2012.
A summer of soccer
Matt Hamilton, of FC Nelson, is running a summer soccer league at Neale Park. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Summer soccer is set to kick off in Nelson city. Registration has opened for FC Nelson's 2011-12 Summer Twilight Football Competition at Neale Park. This new competition provides an opportunity for all ages and abilities to play the beautiful game in central Nelson on a Tuesday and Thursday evening. So grab your mates and organise a team and join in the summer fun starting on November 1 through to the end of February. Catergories include social, mixed (must have three women or players under 14 years-old on the field) and family, which is Thursday only, and you must have at least four children under 13 years-old on the park at all times. The leagues will run for a period of 8 weeks prior to Christmas, with the final game on Tuesday December 20 and Thursday December 22, 2011. The games will re-commence Tuesday January 10 and Thursday January 12, 2012 and will run through until February 21 and Thursday February 23. FC Nelson is also running a primary school mini soccer competition at Neale Park during Term 4 2011 and Term 1 2012. The competition will be held on Tuesdays at 4.30-5.30 pm starting on November 1. The competition is free and open to all primary school aged children. For any queries contact Matt Hamilton 021 908 440 matt.hamilton@fcnelson.co.nz

Local players shine on international stage Beerfest kicks off Kahn Fotuali’i doesn’t need reminded about beating Australia in the build up to the Rugby World Cup. The former Tasman Makos star halfback says that result will give Samoa plenty of encouragement and belief as they tackle rivals Fiji and world champions South Africa, needing a win in both of the remaining Pool D games to qualify for the playoffs. Kahn is one of a number of players with Nelson connections involved in competing for rugby’s biggest prize including; All Black Ben Franks and his Motueka-born brother Owen, United States of America center Junior Sifa, and Samoan prop Sakaria Taulafo, while fellow Samoans Ti’i Paulo and Filipo Levi have both represented the Tasman Makos. Samoa’s rise in world rugby, including the shock 32-23 win over the Wallabies in July and the player depth the tiny nation of 180,000 has developed, gave many pundits hope that the Manu Samoa would make their way out of the pool of death, until Sunday’s 17-10 loss to Wales in Hamilton. “It was a bit gutting, but beating them [Australia] in the build up gives us plenty of confidence that we can beat those top tier teams,” says Kahn. “South Africa is another team though and we’ve got to come in with the right mindset and the right game plan and
stick to it.” But a mouth-watering clash with traditional rivals Fiji awaits before the world champions and 29 year-old says the side is strictly focussed on this Sunday in Auckland. “It will be my first time playing against the Fijians. It’s not going to be easy, this tournament is exciting and the competition is close.” After representing Nelson Bays and the Tasman Makos, Kahn went on to play for the Crusaders and switched provinces to Hawke’s Bay. But he has since signed a contract with Welsh Magners League side Ospreys and got a first hand experience of their physicality when he played against Wales on the weekend. “It’s going to be a new challenge and new adventure. I met some of the guys after the match, so that was pretty cool.” Without the same funding and sponsorship opportunities available in New Zealand, Kahn, who scored in the opening game against Namibia, says playing more tests against the world’s powerhouses is the best chance Samoa has to develop further, and there’s no better place than during the Rugby World Cup. “We’re doing what we can with the resources we have and it’s definitely going in the right place, just getting that experience and getting used to playing under pressure that will be key.”
Organisers of RugBEER HopFest event at The Free House, are “worried” there won’t be enough tickets left to meet demand from expected influx of visitors to the Nelson. “We’ve been amazed at how quickly the tickets have sold,” says co-organiser Mic Dover. The first music event, The Eastern, sold out prior to Saturday night and there are a only a handful of tickets left for events like poet Sam Hunt and singer Julia Deans. The uniquely traditional setting has sparked the interest of locals. “I suspect a lot of people want to experience the Ger say Mic. The Ger refers to a traditional Mongolian yurt, complete with felt lining that gives event goers a truly ethnic and olfactory experience. Mic reckons The Free House “offers a different flavor” to most other venues, especially with the craft beers. “We don’t have any screens in our pub as a rule” so people interested in rugby can enjoy a drink here before or after. It may also be a refuge to the few people, who aren’t too keen on the World Cup.”
Nelson player Kahn Fotuali’i has been a huge influence in the Manu Samoa Rugby World Cup team, starting both their games so far at halfback. Kahn is a former Stok, Nelson Bays and Tasman Mako player. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

But that’s not all... a week of huge events lined up If you were asked to explain the taste of Nelson, how would you describe it? Emma McCashin thinks of “the sea air ... salty with a hoppy aftertaste, well it is the Craft Brewing Capital of New Zealand.” Taste Nelson, held at Founders Park on Saturday September 24, “combines all the tastiest, and best, bits of Nelson”, food, wine, beer, seafood, fresh produce, culinary delights, arts, crafts and local performing talent. It’s a festival, fair and expo “all rolled into one.” It’s also a family-friendly event with a dedicated kids’ area so you know whilst you’re sampling the delights, they’ll have plenty to entertain themselves with too. Taste Nelson has a real family focus to it. The Railway at Founders will be running, there will be a free Ferris wheel, bouncy castle and face painting as well as lots of other fun stuff for the kids to do.
It’s an affordable, fun day out for the young and old and those with families, says Emma. “We’ve tried to keep the ticket prices affordable, getting a pre-sale means people can grab an adult ticket for $9 with children under 12 free and 12-17 are $5 or you can get a family pass for $23 which is two adults and unlimited children.” The long term vision is to make Taste Nelson an iconic event for Nelson like the Marlborough Wine & Food Festival is for Blenheim. To achieve this Emma says they need people to come along and support this event. “So if people want to keep Taste Nelson around, they should come along rain or shine.” The organisers are hoping for some fabulous Nelson sunshine but if it rains Emma rekons “just bring your gummies and umbrella and we’ll just squeeze everyone in the Grainery and GETTING A TASTE OF NELSON: Taste Nelson organisers Huup Waageen and Emma Mcin the big music marquee.” Cashin, Taste Nelson is being held at Founders Heritage Park. Teams prepare for wine competition The Italian and American contenders for the Nelson Wineart First XV wine competition have now arrived in Nelson, ready for the showdown with local wines that happens on September 25. A total of 360 bottles were flown into Nelson recently - 180 from Italy and 180 from America, and are now being held at Woollaston Estate in preparation for the judging, the Degustation Dinner held straight after the judging , followed by the Tutored Tasting the day after. The First XV Competition features 15 chosen wines (the First XV) across three varieties (Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling) from Getting excited about the upcoming First XV Wine competition are each of the three countries - New Zealand, Italy Rimu Grove Winery’s Patrick Stowe, left, Woollaston Estate’s wine- and USA, with NZ being represented by select maker Shane Munn and sales manaager for Te Mania Wines and Rich- Nelson wines. The top wine from each variety and an overall mond Plains and Italian Angela Bairati. winner will be chosen.
Nelson First XV chair Patrick Stowe of Rimu Grove Winery says now that the international wines have arrived and are in the cellar, the excitement is starting to build. “We are immensely proud of our Nelson wines and when you see our bottles lined up beside those from Italy and the United States, it’s becoming very real. I can’t wait for the judging and I’m confident our wines will surprise and delight the judges.” An independent panel of renowned international wine judges will conduct a blind tasting of the 45 wines in a closed session. Patrick says tickets to the Degustation Dinner at Woollaston Estate and the Tutored Tasting at the WoW Museum the following day are selling well and they are hoping to entice overseas visitors who are interested in wine as well as rugby to come along. To find out more and to buy tickets to the wine events you can go to www.nelsonwineart.co.nz
