Hampden St delights over school production It took as much planning as a full military operation says deputy principal Rachel Rae, but with a far happier outcome. All four hundred students of Hampden Street School combined to put on a spectacular school production titled All Aboard Our Yellow Submarine. The show was held over three sold out nights at its school hall last week and Rachel

says it was a sight to behold. “I was actually blown away with how great the kids were. They were just so clever and were fantastic actors and actresses.” The main cast comprised of 50 senior students with the show also using a school band and choir. Rachel says the school worked all term on the show and said feedback from the community was “awesome”.

“This was such a great thing to do, the children and staff had so much fun producing it.” With the production over, the dozens of masks used in the show will be reused for the Masked Parade in Nelson next month, well before the happy glow from the show disappears. “There’s no room in Nelson for another highway!”

“If they put it on Rocks Road it would stuff up all the scenery, I first thought stick it through Victory, but I do see where they’re coming from with the extra noise and stuff.”

Supporters go blue for walk Nelson’s Blue September prostate cancer awareness campaign went for its final walk on Sunday. Members of the campaign walked from Anzac Park to Tahunanui Beach in anoth-

er attempt to raise awareness of the disease. Ian Chapman says he was thrilled with the month and what the group has achieved. “We were at the Home and Garden show

over the weekend you couldn’t miss us. As far as I’m concerned it’s been a great success.” Placemakers were a major sponsor for the campaign in Nelson.

• The Nelson City Council is responding to a growing trend of natural burials, and will consider moves to allow them next week. A recommendation to make a variation to the Cemetery and Crematorium standards to include a natural burial area at Wakapuaka Cemetery will go to council on Thursday, as well as a recommendation that a further natural burial area be established at the Marsden Valley Cemetery. • Nelson is leading the country in taking advantage of the government’s Warm Up New Zealand programme. So far 1281 homes have been retrofitted with insulation under the scheme, almost three percent of homes per head of population, well ahead of the rest of New Zealand towns. It is also beneficial to the wider community as the 1281 insulation upgrades equates to around $1.4 million in government funding coming into the local economy, says Nelson City Council.

Big decisions need to be made by the city says Kerry so it can move forward. “This is big picture stuff here. I’m the reason we are doing the study, this time we are doing it properly because we need to have a plan, an answer 40 years out.” Rachel stressed the need to look at efficiency and that the city needs to get creative to secure government funding, which looks as if it will be earmarked for the country’s three major cities. But something does need to A concerned member of the pub- be done insisted people spolic with his sign asking about ken to after the forum. Port Waimea Rd’s future. Nelson is, as its catch-phrase

says, the regions gateway to the world. Most of our logged timber, treated timber, fruit, wine and other exports go via the Port and trucks need to get the produce there as quickly and as efficiently as possible. Having them tiki-tour behind the city is not an option, even going over Waimea Rd as opposed to Rocks Rd costs them for the extra distance. Aldo says his tunnel option is safe, effective and would solve Nelson safety issues. “I would also like to propose that we table the option of moving the State Highway designation off Rocks Rd and onto a new Southern Link route, with a cut and cover under Victory Square to limit disruption, as again this suggestion represents the voice of a number of communities. Building tunnels is not new, it’s done all over the world and it’s getting cheaper and more effective.”

Cherry Blossom Festival booming

AFFORDABLE PROGRESS I’m Aldo Miccio. It’s almost election time, and as your Nelson mayoral candidate I want to reaffirm my promise to represent your views – the views of all residents and ratepayers. I believe in working together across all generations, so my door will always be open. I will bring my proven business and financial experience to council to get rates in check and bring transparency and accountability to Nelson City Council. Our city needs a mayor who is passionate with a proven track record of making things happen and successfully leading teams. We need a mayor who will be an ambassador and champion for our city. Vote Miccio 4 Mayor.

A solid crowd of 700 people were treated to traditional Japanese performances during the 14th Cherry Blossom Festival at Miyazu Garden’s on Sunday. Organiser Mary Carter says the festival was once again a resounding success with activities on-going throughout the day. “We were more than happy with the day, we were overjoyed. It was so nice to see Nelson people out and enjoying themselves.” The festival is held to celebrate the 34 year sister-city relationship between Nelson and Miyazu in Japan. It is held in spring, when Japan celebrates its New Year. Mary says the Rai Jin Taiko Drum Group was a particular highlight at the Nelson City Council-funded event but she received plenty of positive feedback on other attractions including the tea ceremony, a traditional Japanese puppet show, calligraphy and the fishing for kids. More than 100 people were involved Asha White, 3, fishing at the Cherry Blossom in the festival. Festival with dad Chris on Sunday.

Breast cancer trust launches calendar A new trust is aiming to help Nelson women by raising awareness and money for breast cancer sufferers – and its first major project is generating plenty of interest. The Nelson Regional Breast Cancer Trust was established earlier this year with the aim of keeping money raised during October, Breast Cancer Awareness month, in Nelson. The group aims to organise an event each October and has organised a Boot Camp for Breast Cancer fundraiser this year with trainers from City Fitness Gym. Nelson Breast surgeon Rosalynd Pochin helped kick off the awareness campaign on Saturday morning by selling calendars made especially for the campaign and featuring City Fitness gym instructors. She says the money raised from the month will go towards a portable ultrasound ma-

chine, used to diagnose cancerous lumps. “At the moment if a women comes to see me with a lump, most of the time I diagnose it, but if it’s borderline I need to get an ultrasound done and that can take a week. That can be an horrific week for women waiting to find out if they have cancer.” A new machine costs around $30,000 and would be used around three times a week says Rosalynd. “It’s on the hospital wish-list, but that can take time. This would give a lot of peace of mind to Nelson women.” To register for the Boot Camp – which involves three 30 minute bursts of exercise and opportunities to bid on several silent auctions in between – visit bc4bc.org.nz. Calendars are available from Page and Blackmore, Booksellers, City Fitness and the Nelson Hospital gift shop.

Tahunanui school thrill crowd with folk dance Phillip Rollo

Samuel Mortiz, front, doing some folk dancing at Tahunanui School last week. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

It was boogie time at Tahunanui Primary School last Thursday as the entire junior syndicate performed a folk dance in front of their friends and family. “I saw lots of big smiles on people’s faces, on grandparents, aunties and uncles, mums and dads,” teacher Jane Tambisari says. It was old and new as the students performed a variety of dances, some their parents

would know, and others they created themselves. “There was a real good mix of those, there was some creative dance that the year ones made and an Indian dance.” Year five and six students auditioned to be leaders, and as well as helping the juniors in the folk dance, they also organise Jump Jam sessions on wet lunch times. “In the past I’ve had about 12, but I had so many good kids this year that I’ve probably got a core group

of about 25. They all share it, they’re wonderful, they give up their own time,” she says. On the day of the dance none of the children were nervous about performing, and Jane says the dance was successful, and says all the children enjoyed themselves. “I think they love it, they just so look forward to it. They always rise to the occasion and particularly enjoy doing the bird dance at the end when they bring all the parents in.”

Vote Phil Thompson

for Nelson City Council. Hello, My name is Phil Thompson, Nelson City Council Candidate. When elected, I will enthusiastically support the elevation of Nelson as “the lifestyle city of New Zealand” for all residents, across all generations. To achieve this it is clear that the council needs to make some changes that will result in greater transparency, affordable rates, better representation for the elderly, safer roads, improved community parks and positive progress. You need a smart, open and visionary council with business experience and a social conscience. This is your chance to elect council representatives who will listen and bring your views to the table. It is time for a council that delivers what you want. I’m married and have two children. Since graduating with a BA (Hons) Degree in Business and Public Administration in 1991, I’ve worked in management in construction-related industries in England and throughout New Zealand. I’ve always had a great interest in local community issues and am currently an active Trustee of Nelson’s Kahurangi Employment Trust.

Historic church gets a refurb

Hamish Baxter, pastor of Nelson Baptist Church, outside the church which is undergoing a make-over after the cladding and frame was found to be rotten. Photo: Andrew Board.

A 100 year-old church is getting an extreme makeover, one wall at a time. Nelson Baptist Church on Bridge St, has had one outer wall totally replaced after rotting cladding and frame work was discovered, and hopes to fix the other side next year. The cost is forcing the church to do the job on the historic building in pieces, as the Historic Places Trust requested that repairs leave the building looking exactly the same. To comply, the church has had timber specially milled, as they don’t make the same profile timber anymore. Pastor Hamish Baxter says the upgrade has been only been

affordable because of a generous donation by the Canterbury Community Trust. “We got a quote of $150,000 to do the whole job, the church saved $40,000 but it was a grant of $35,000 that allowed us to go ahead with one side of it and hopefully we can get a similar grant next year to do the other side.” The rotting wood arrived in the building after a plastic coat that was applied to it several decades ago began to crack and allow water in but not out. Hamish said it was important for the church to be restored. “When we first got the cost I thought, ‘wow, this money

could do a lot of good in the community’. But this church is used by a lot of people from the community every week and we felt it needed to stay here.” The church hosts a day-care programme, provides a snack and cup of tea for people waiting for their court case across the road, hosts YMCA activities and other community groups. The church was first established at the site in 1851 with the original building now the church hall. The larger building, which faces the road and is having its walls replaced, was built in 1896.

School gala a sunny success

The sun and smiles shone brightly at Auckland Point’s school gala on Sunday. After a week of unpredictable weather principal Sonya Hockley was thrilled to see the sun out as families poured into the gala. “What a great day. It’s fantastic to see so many people come along and have fun. There’s plenty going on for them.” Amongst the highlights were Caramel the cow who was the main attraction in the cow pat bingo competition; a range of bouncy castles were also a hit along with members of the Tasman Makos.

RSA brings vets together A concert to remember the Battle of Britain provided the perfect opportunity to host a luncheon for those involved in World War 2 says Nelson RSA. More than 240 people attended the lunch at the Nelson Suburban Club last Saturday before staying on for the concert, performed by the Royal New Zealand Air Force Woodbourne band. Barry Pont, of Nelson RSA, says it is the first time the RSA has held such a lunch and it went down a treat. “We thought we’d struggle to fit 200 in, but more and more wanted to come along and be a part of it and most stayed on until after the concert which was great.” The concert was also to celebrate the unveiling of a statue in London to honour New Zealand Battle of Britain hero Sir Keith Park.

Garden group grows Growing your own edible garden can have huge benefits on your health, and the Nelson Herb Society has recently reinvented itself as the Nelson Herb and Edible Garden Group in order to cater to a wider range of gardeners. “The reason for that is because just seeming to be focused on herbs seemed a bit too narrow,” member Nina Carpenter says. Nina has been a member since 1997 and says the best part about it is sharing what she’s learned, and learning new facts about the benefits herbs can be on your health. “There’s always something new you can learn about gardening and herbs. When it comes to looking after your health it’s good to be able to take control yourself. You don’t have to go to the doctor and get pills, you can grab something out of your garden that will help.” Even very common herbs can be beneficial to your health. “Dandelion provides all the Vitamin C you need. So instead of going out and buying Vitamin C, you can chew a dandelion leaf. Not only would that provide you with Vitamin C, but it can help your tooth enamel.” Members of the group get access to a library of books on herbs and gardening as well as learning new ways to improve the growth of the plants. If you’re keen on joining, the group meets on the fourth Monday of every month in the Jaycee room at Founders Park, membership is $10, and you can sign up on the night, or alternatively call president Jude Tarr on 5487944.

The Nelson SPCA has a porky new friend after a piglet, named Piggy Sue, was dropped off to it last week. SPCA is looking after the piglet, along with a range of other animals, but will soon be putting her up for adoption says centre manager Donna Walzl. “We take in around 2000 animals into our care each year and we rely on donations, bequests and our own fundraising efforts to operate.” SPCA provides animal welfare inspectors and responds to animals in distress or injured, all this is 24 hours per day 365 days of the year job. The SPCA is the only law enforcement agency in the country which is not government funded, also there is no government funding for the day-to-day running costs, wages, veterinary costs, care and substance for the animals.

Men’s Shed is one step closer to reality. The members voted this week on their preferred design option for the A&P Show grounds site, and will order the kit-set in the coming week. The preferred option for the shed is a 12x12x5.1m high heritage barn. “It’s a big shed. Men in their shed collect stuff; tools, wood, do projects, and they need space to do it,” says Jim Davis. Men’s Shed is an idea that came from ‘Tin Shed’ in Australia. Kiwi men are famous for spending countless hours pottering and tinkering in their own sheds, the inspiration for a series of ‘Blokes in Sheds’ books. But when these men move into smaller spaces - flats and retirement villages they’re often left ‘in no man’s land’ with all the expertise and know edge but without a place to work and play. There has been interest from the Mini Car Club to contribute a sig-

nificant sum in order for use of the shed. The Mini Car Club have been on the lookout for a meeting place and a storage container for some car parts, so both parties will be meeting in the coming days to see if it’s a viable option. If the Mini Car Club comes on board then the Men’s Shed would have the sufficient funds for the project. “We have to wait for a couple of things. If that money came in, we’re home and hosed.” There has been plenty of donations of tools, materials and services for the Men’s Shed, and Jim says they’d warmly welcome any more. “We’ve had fantastic support from the community. All kinds of people have offered us tools and I have those stored out in Brightwater.” If you would like to donate any tools, materials or services to the Men’s Shed, you can call Jim on 5447624.

Your Mayor for Nelson

“Kerry Marshall is a leader with a proven track record. I want him back to finish the job he’s started.”

Murray Sturgeon

Hello, I’m Kerry Marshall, your Mayor, and I’m running for office again. Your Nelson City Council has been busting a gut for you over the past three years. You may not know that, you are busy, and Council business is often under the radar. But do not doubt our commitment for one second. Your Council has achieved much on your behalf, and we are on the cusp of so much more. Yes, a number of decisions have been tough, and divisive, but we move forward together. This city is in an enviable position - and I believe continuity is the order of the day. Vote for Kerry Marshall and in the next three years we will reap the benefit of all that hard work.

A Prosperous City

This Council has courted economic development with a passion.

This council is committed to Nelson being a cultural hub. Arts Policy. We’ve never had one. Now we do, with funding that lights the way for artistic activity, adding substance to our claim as a significant arts city. Read it. (www.ncc.govt.nz - search term: Arts Policy)

Events Fund. Council has backed a number of wonderful local events to attract visitors and for growth; MarchFest, WASA Arts Festival, Nelson School of Music WinterFest etc.

Sport is Culture. Saxton Field development continues apace.

Our commitment to cycleways pays huge dividends for anyone on two wheels. The Nelson Tennis Centre junior programme is gaining national attention...

Trafalgar Park Upgrade. The Rugby World Cup is a huge opportunity for us - and Trafalgar Park is a remarkable event resource for many years to come.

The Theatre Royal. When the Trust needed support we came

Backing Winners. NCC has provided money to complete the

Performing Arts & Conference Centre. This is the only council

An Efficient City

An enormous amount of work has gone on to tranform your Council. One Stop Shop. We now have one integrated service centre, where you can access anything you need, on the spot. Independent Directors. No councillor can be a director of

Port Nelson, or any council owned business. We believe this leads to much better independent decisions.

Less Meetings. We have reduced the amount of committee

meetings - fewer meetings, less wasted time = better results.

Efficient Culture. We inherited a tired organisation. Keith

Marshall, our powerhouse CEO, has energised everybody. More motivated staff = more efficient use of ratepayer money.

Solar Saver. A first for New Zealand, and a Council sponsored initiative to save ratepayers money on their powerbills, as well as foster sustainable practices. (www.ncc.govt.nz - search term: Solar Saver) OTHER EFFICIENCY INITIATIVES

Continued infrastructure investments throughout our region, arterial traffic study to get the issue sorted once and for all.

A Cultural City

Air New Zealand Hangar. Opened in August this year, this multi-million dollar hangar creates jobs and attracts development at one of New Zealand’s busiest airports.

“Kerry Marshall is the face of Nelson. He’s open, friendly, warm and trustworthy and that’s why I want him back as Mayor.”

to have taken this project seriously, and got us close to a solution. Just because Plan A wasn’t right doesn’t mean Plan B isn’t imminent.

OTHER COUNCIL FUNDED INITIATIVES:

Free entry to Founders Park, inner city security camera funding, Nelson School of Music funding, holding community housing rents, a flourishing Sculpture Trust.

A Beautiful City

We are committed to Nelson being a stunning environment to live and work in. Heart of the City. Have you read this document? Wow. Our urban

future is exciting and imminent. In 10 years you won’t believe how wonderful Nelson is going to look. (www.ncc.govt.nz - Search term: Heart of the City)

Tahunanui Reserve. A pristine barbecue area for families,

incorporating impressive art works. This is a model of urban development and beautification that benefits everyone.

Victory Square - Community of the Year. The Council has augmented the park with two children’s playing areas and landscaping, making it a much friendlier place to be. OTHER COUNCIL FUNDED INITIATIVES: continued financial support for recycling, further investment in the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary, The Cycle Trails initiative.

VOTE KERRY MARSHALL

“This has been the most productive council team I’ve been a part of in 25 years, and Kerry’s leadership has guided that.”

Derek Shaw. “I’m voting for Kerry Marshall because I like the style of leadership and the wealth of experience he brings to Council.”

Paul Le Gros. “As our Mayor, Kerry Marshall has proven his ability to work with a wide range of people with diverse views. He’s got my tick.”

Bringing 20 years of cosmetic and appearance medicine to NELSON! After 20 years of beautifying Canterbury with his cosmetic and appearance medicine procedures, Dr Beulink is now bringing his vast knowledge, expertise and experience to Nelson. Joining forces with the team at Nelson Beauty Therapy, Dr Beulink now runs regular clinics at the Trafalgar St rooms. Bedelia Shepherd, owner of Nelson Beauty Therapy, along with therapists Carmen Brown and Monica Ecckle have a wealth of knowledge and information about skin, and are very passionate about sharing their knowledge with their clients. With an indepth understanding of skin science, they are committed to using the best available products to ensure the top class results their clients want to see. But, in this ever increasing field of cosmetic and beauty therapy, the team at Nelson Beauty Therapy wanted to give their clinic something extra while maintaining the confidentiality they share with their customers. Bedelia Shepherd explains, “We wanted to give our clients and the people of Nelson access to good cosmetic procedures that they can be confident with, and Dr Beulink is perfect for this” Since 1992, Dr Robert Beulink has strived to remain at the forefront of the cosmetic scene. Regularly attending and presenting at workshops and conferences around the world, Dr Beulink has intro-

duced and pioneered many new and innovative procedures. “There have been numerous procedures we have very much pioneered in New Zealand. They have been new on the world scene and we have helped develop them”. Being a self-confessed perfectionist with a keen eye for detail, it doesn’t take long to realise this is a doctor who is very passionate about his chosen field.

Such is his reputation, patients from all around New Zealand, and even further afield, actively seek out Dr Beulink. And why? Not only does each patient receive a personalised and comprehensive service from him, but in addition, each procedure is specifically tailored by the skills of a true craftsman. For any cosmetic procedure, the experience of the doctor is obviously very important, but it is the skill of that doctor that is paramount to produce extraordinary results, and Dr Robert Beulink has an added advantage. He has the eye of an artist – and it’s that which makes his work exceptional. Dr Beulink explains, “There is obviously a large degree of medicine and science involved but there is certainly a huge amount of artistic flair with all the facial and body sculpturing procedures I do. You can give a person a paintbrush and say, “this is how you paint”, but if they haven’t got that artistic gift ... you either have it or you don’t. With the kind of surgery I perform, I’m definitely involved in an art form. I’m sculpturing a face or a body, it’s a living medium”.

Actual after photo

Dr Beulink says cosmetic and appearance medicine is a very personal decision which he discusses carefully with his clients so he can provide options that lead to a suitable treatment plan.

“Cosmetic procedures are a lot more acceptable these days compared to the 1990’s, but people still don’t want others to know that they have had some work done,” he explains. “The secret is making sure any work that is done looks entirely natural.” Combining with the therapists at Nelson Beauty Therapy, that’s exactly what this team focuses on – giving a fresher, natural result.

“I promise results.” Dr Robert Beulink

Nelson students get first taste of new adventure trust A ten-week pilot programme encouraging kids to get off their couches, away from the TV and into the great kiwi outdoors is in progress in Nelson. The Legend Kids Adventure Trust will be launched officially in late October, but 45 kids are already sampling what it has to offer. Founder Dulkara Martig, of Nelson, said the overall aim of the trust was “to inspire local kids to embark on a life-long appreciation and love of outdoor recreation and the New Zealand wilderness.” The 9-10 year-olds have been learning a range of skills from map reading and navigation to outdoor first aid and how to use camp cookers safely. The programme culminates in overnight tramping trips in the mountains. “I was pretty sure a few people would be interested in taking part in the pilot,” says Dulkara. “But I wasn’t expecting such a huge response. The phone rang for days and it was hard telling people the programme was full.” Already working part time in a primary schools sports programme, and operating a

sports orientated after-school programme, Dulkara says she was surprised and disappointed to discover that so many kids had not visited the region’s national parks. “Children don’t seem to be getting the same experiences these days. There are many other activities that are competing for their spare time and technology dominates. It would be such a shame for kiwi kids to grow up without an appreciation for the fantastic environment we have.” Mark Brown, principal of Victory Primary School says, “This is an amazing opportunity for some of our young people to experience first-hand the wonderful outdoors with a skilled person who’s passionate about our region. Children from our school have told me they’ve had a fantastic time, especially caving and going tramping in the bush.” Legend Kids Adventure Trust will run more programmes next term and also a pilot programme for intermediate aged children. More information can be found on the Legend Kids website.

Ollie Shepherd, left, and Cam Vining, both 10, have some fun in the Nelson Lakes snow during a Legend Kids Adventure Trust outting.

A quiet week in the port this week which is not unusual at this time of the year. • A car carrier, container vessels, the regular Strait shipping ferry and the cement ships all visited the port this week along with several fishing vessels. • The Kawatiri dredge is currently in the port for the annual dredging programme. This work is essential in order for Port Nelson Ltd to keep the channels at the depths gazetted on the charts. The Kawatiri will likely be continuing her dredging programme over the next two weeks. She displays “Restricted in Ability to manoeuvre” signals so please be sure to give her a wide berth. The neap tides experienced in the port has meant that the currents have not been too strong for big or small vessels. • For information on how to read charts, tide tables and signals for the Rules of the Road don’t hesitate to contact your local Coastguard Boating Education Service provider. I encourage you to become familiar with the current local by-laws and the proposed ones, as there are some changes in the wind. Enjoy your safe boating this week,

1948 Chrysler Town & Country After

Lloyd and Graham Heyward love old cars. They love them so much that they have built a business around them. Their team repair and restore all makes and models of classic cars and no job is too large. An example of their work is a 1948 Chrysler Town & Country, as featured, which was sent to them from America along with a 1948 Chrysler Seratoga which had interchangeable components and was used as a donor car. It was a huge job as this rare and highly collectable car had been in a serious accident and was regarded by the American repairers and insurers as impossible to restore. Graham and Lloyd were asked to assess the job using photos of the smashed car and data sourced from the car manual. It was decided that the car could be restored and would be shipped to New Zealand for a complete rebuild. The American White Ash timber required for the restoration was sourced from New Zealand importers. The car was shipped back to America earlier this year and will appear in the prestigious Pebble Beach classic car auction where all of the entries have to meet an international standard. Cars restored by the Heyward Team frequently feature in prominent New Zealand car magazines. The lads work on all makes and models of classic, vintage and modern cars and are happy to call at your place and take a look at your car or discuss your project ideas.

Piloting a pleasure for harbour master Capt. Dave Duncan is getting used to steadying his seasoned sea legs on shore as Port Nelson’s harbour master and marine operations manager. He tells Nelson Weekly how he got into the job and why he loves it for our weekly series, Your People, At Work. My day usually starts around 7.30-8 o’clock, I’ve got a skilled assistant Troy who comes in at 7.30 and organises the shipping order of things for the day. I touch base with him when I get in and from there I look at what ships I’ve got the opportunity to train on as a pilot. I’m the marine operations manager and harbour master at Port Nelson equally and I’m training to be a pilot on tug boats. Piloting is a bonus pleasure for me. As I’ve only been here seven months I’m still learning but that’s an exciting thing for me at the moment. I will do between 200-250 pilots this year to get partially qualified, so if some of the guys want to take holidays I can help out. Also as harbour master I can take examinations for people who want to be pilot-exempt but I can’t do that until I’m qualified myself. Currently the two pilots do that for me, on my behalf. Tonight there is a ship coming in at 20.30 so I will meet the pilot here at 8 o’clock, we’ll go out to the ship, which will take us 25 minutes. Then we will bring it in from 8.30 to 9.30 roughly. The most important part of being harbour master I’ve found so far is working with people who use the port. I’ve got a very positive attitude to that I think, and it’s been fairly well received by the sporting people around the place. Recently we’ve made some decisions which have been beneficial to the yacht clubs and the kayak clubs. I’m a member of both the Tasman Cruising Club and the Nelson Sailing Club, they work very well with us, ensuring we can do the commercial shipping and we work with them, ensuring they can do their sailing. Sailing is something I didn’t get into until I was in my twenties but I really enjoy it. I crew on other people’s boats and I seem to be a reasonably popular crewman. Perhaps there is an obscure belief that by having the harbour master on board you can’t get into trouble. We have a lot of fun. Once I sort out which pilot jobs I can train on I spend a lot of my day in meetings, like every-

body. They are always challenging because the expectations are getting bigger now that I’ve been here for seven months so that involves more research. I spend a fair bit of my time on the computer and a fair bit of time at my desk. Like many positions this job has its stressful moments. I feel like I’m under a lot of stress a lot of the time but I’ve got a bit of a sports regime under way to help relieve it. I like music, that relaxes me and I’m learning to play the guitar, it lets the stress off as well. Other parts of the role are search and rescue and policing the port. We have to educate some boaties and for those who don’t want to be educated, we have the authority to penalise them. There are the small boats, the guys with the jet skis and the guys with the outboard motorboats. They all want to go a bit quicker so we would like make that possible for them in a new Harbour Transit lane and some zoned ski areas, the whole port is only a five knot zone from one side to the other. Very few people either know this it or obey it. I’ve also been instrumental in the new by-laws that are up for consultation at the moment, when they are adopted it will be necessary to educate people on the new by-laws - that’s not difficult as most people are very receptive. I also have businesses around the port that come in for advice, I can’t always help them, but I do my best when I can. Getting it right is the most satisfying part of the job, getting the mix right between being the harbour master, the marine operations manager and a pilot. I have some very clever staff that help me out a lot. It pays to retain a sense of humour. I had never deliberately planned to become a harbour master. I was in a wonderful relationship here and the opportunity arose to come ashore and do this job. Unfortunately the relationship didn’t last but the job has and now that I’m in the job I’m enjoying it a lot and hope to be here for quite a while, it’s a beautiful place to live, there’s nothing you can’t do in Nelson and the Port and people in it play a big part of that.

Call us about your project.

For the past two months Don and Lesley Hamilton have been perfecting their fish and chips, now they say Two Little Fish is ready to share them with the rest of Nelson. In late 2009 Don and Lesley decided it was time for a life-style change and to move back to Nelson to be closer to family. They sold their newly completed house in Rolleston and started looking at business opportunities. After looking at a number of businesses they decided on the challenge of the Nayland Road Takeaways. They moved to Nelson in May and took over the ownership of the business in June. They have rebranded the business as Two Little Fish and have spent the last couple of months upgrading the interior of the premises and perfecting their cooking skills. They believe they have come up with a winning combination, based on the comments of their customers who many claim are “the best fish and chips they have had”. As well as fresh fish and chips, Two Little Fish has a large range of gourmet burgers and Don says the next project for the shop is to upgrade the exterior of the building. Two Little Fish can cater for work group shouts, children’s birthday parties, sports group functions and currently supply meals to a number of groups, including businesses whose staff is working overtime, and the local rest homes. They have just started opening over the lunch time from 11.30 to 1.30pm with their evening hours being 4.30 to 8.00 or until the last customer leaves. Don was born in Riwaka and worked for Talley’s in Motueka

from 1987 to 1993 as general manager of their Shellfish Division before being head-hunted by Pacifica in Christchurch where he worked from 1993 to 1998 as production manager and quality controller with a staff of up to 200. He then moved to a smaller operation called Southern Seafoods which processed greenshell mussels, crayfish, paua, blue cod mainly sourced from Stewart Island and Te Anau. Lesley was born in Nelson and moved away with her family over 40 years ago. She started working life as a School dental nurse in Hawkes Bay, before moving to Wellington to work at the Treasury, then moved to Queenstown as the assistant treasurer of the Queenstown-Lakes District Council. She moved to Auckland as an accountant for a travel agency then to Christchurch and worked at Southern Seafood’s where she meet Don 10 years ago. While at Southern Seafood’s the New Zealand Food Safety Authority introduced the requirement for export premises to have a Risk Management Programme. Lesley wrote the programmes for Southern Seafood’s and three other associated companies. Don and Lesley would like to thank their customers for the loyal support and always welcome their feedback, their suppliers for their knowledge and assistance and finally to all their staff who have become a great asset to the business.

Nelson swimmer breaks Fijian national record Andrew Board Fourteen-year-old Nelson girl Skye Eden is Fiji’s fastest woman. In the water at least. Skye broke several age-group Fijian swim records last weekend, competing for Nelson South Swim Club during a winter meet in Richmond. But the big one was breaking an open record for the 400 metre freestyle with a time of 4.53.56, almost six seconds quicker than the previous record and making her the fastest Fijian women over that distance. Skye’s ten year old brother Finn was also successful, breaking four age-group records at the same meet. The Eden’s were both born and raised in Fiji, as were their parents, however greatgrandad Eden originated from Brightwater and the Eden family relocated to Nelson in 2008 and now hold dual Fijian and New Zealand citizenship. Skye says she did not know she had broken the record until she got home after the meet. “I found out when I went home after the comp, it was a huge surprise. I didn’t even think I would come close to it, because I’m so not a distance swimmer. I

was jumping around the house.” The Nelson College for Girls student is no stranger to international competition, just last month she represented Fiji at the Oceania Games in Samoa and is currently on the Fiji squad for the Pacific Games to be held in New Caledonia in August next year. She says she has more records in her sights. “I’m a just a couple of milliseconds off the 50 metre freestyle and 100 metre freestyle in the 15-16 age group. The [Nelson South Swim] club is going to Fiji this week, so I hope to beat them there.” She trains five times a week in the pool and includes one gym session to her regime. Skye and Finn, who attends St Joseph’s School, have both been swimming from a very young age and trained with the Mako Swim Club in Fiji before coming to Nelson. Finn has been swimming competitively since he was five years-old and Skye since she was eight and she says she is looking forward to a strong season this summer. “Hopefully I’ll break a few more pb’s [personal bests] this year.”

Nelson Bays comeback not enough in Tahuna

A late comeback from Nelson Bays was not quite enough to get it a result against Canterbury Colts at Tahunanui on Saturday. Late tries to Joe Yalayala, Marcos Nairiaria, Mike Tyler was not enough as Nelson Bays lost the game 32-22 after trailing 11-5 at half time.

Nelson man wins coastal classic would be enough. Enough it was as into the first checkpoint at the end of Onetahuti Beach he looked comfortable. Nathan Fa’avae looked the likely chaser, which he was for the next 30kms to finish just over six minutes behind and showing the effects of his recent adventure race in China. Behind him, Matthew Cavanaugh, a 31 year-old American, Captain and Strategist for the US Army, had his first taste of ‘Kiwi’ conditions and found those conditions enough to whet his appetite for a return in 2011 to go quicker. Colin Rolfe and Chris Gates were the other Nelson competitors to mount the podium, first and second respectively in the 5059 age group, along the way ensuring they, along with Owen Rowse, remained in the ‘1994 Survivors Club’. First three for women’s honours was very close with Wellington’s Jackie Holley having enough left in her legs to hold out Kristine Reid (Auckland) along the final causeway. Holley’s time of 3.14.33 giving her a buffer of just under a minute on Reid (3.15.29) with third placed Bridget Deverell (Cambridge) closing the gap in the final 5km finishing in 3.16.52. Nelson’s best was Eelyn Au in a time of 3.45.21. The Subway Dun Run is Nelson Event’s next trail run on Saturday October 16th. Photo: Paul Webster Photography. While most of the South Island suffered at the hands of the ‘weather gods’ someone kind offered an envelope of accommodating conditions to allow Saturday’s 17th Nelson Events Abel Tasman Coastal Classic trail run to take part. Nelson’s Simon Mardon was always in command to be first home in 2hrs 36mins 20secs and register his third victory over the 36km track. As defending champion he commented pre-race “It is the most enjoyable run that I have ever done” and feeling no pressure. He was just anxious to get on the start line to give it his all, holding nothing back and hoping that

Lesley McIntosh of Softball New Zealand, back, is helping launch Pink Zone softball for girls in Nelson this summer. With her is from left; Ella Orr, Taya Masoner, 6, and Shanae XXXX at Saxton Field.

Softball goes pink for the girls This summer girls will be aiming for pink, hopes softball’s regional development officer Lesley McIntosh. Softball New Zealand has launched Pink Zone softball, a concept to attract girls to play an exciting modified version of Softball in the hope partici-

pants will enter into the full version later. Apart from the modified rules the feature of the concept is that all equipment and materials are pink. Lesley says Pink Zone softball will start in Nelson on October 16 and she hopes to get enough interest to

develop girls-only leagues by the end of the year. Nelson is one of the first centres in the country to receive the pink equipment and it will be available for girls aged 6 to 15. For more information about signing up for pink zone softball contact dinzo@xtra.co.nz.

Welcome again to your regular golf updates, news and tips from Craig and Jonti at Sharpies Golf Nelson. Once again a wet weekend meant many golfers were resigned to chores around the house rather than walking the fairways but it cant be long till we see warmer days and longer nights! The Tour championship looms closer as the last event in the FedEx Cup with a cool 10 million up for grabs, leading contenders Matt Kuchar and Dustin Johnson will face severe tests from many players lurking not too far behind. On the local front, Totaradale has their finals of Club Champs this weekend so good luck to all those involved. Also this Sunday is the finals of Sloan trophy to be held at Motueka Golf Club with the local Motueka team currently leading by 2 points but have the bye this weekend. This means only Waahi Taakaro can beat them for the trophy but to do this they must beat Golden Downs 6-0, an exciting conclusion to the season. Tip of the week: Treat your hybrid like a 4 iron and not a 3 wood, slightly back in your stance and stand a little closer to the ball Sharpies special of the week: New Drivers and Fairways from only $99!! Current world Top 5 Players 1) Tiger Woods 2) Phil Mickelson 3) Lee Westwood 4) Steve Stricker 5) Martin Kaymer Last word: If you think it’s hard to meet new people, try picking up the wrong golf ball ! If you have any golfing news, tournaments, tips or results we’d be happy to hear them by emailing editorial@nelsonweekly.co.nz. See ya in the 19th, Craig and Jonti.
