The works on the Salisbury-Champion Road roundabout upgrade are over, with the project finishing eight weeks ahead of schedule.

Tasman District Council community relations manager Chris Choat said the roundabout is now fully functioning but there will be some minor work continuing “around the sides” with the sea of traffic cones in place for a short time longer.

The $2 million project was able to finish early thanks to a more efficient way of working, which was discovered during the upgrade.

It’s great news for local businesses affected by the major works which have been ongoing since December and have caused much disruption to and from their premises. The customer access slip road for southbound drivers on the Richmond Deviation section of SH6 will now be closed off, and congestion along Salisbury Road should ease once the temporary roundabout at Templemore Drive is removed at the end of next week.

Vaughan Hope, facility manager for Richmond Aquatic Centre, says, “The project has been managed really well, and I was actually growing quite fond of the slip road. But our customers will be happy their direct route into us is now back to normal.”

Raeward Fresh owner, Laura Caldwell, is also pleased with the early completion date. “It’s such great news to us and all who shop here,” she says. “So much so that we are having ‘roundabout special’ deals for the next few

Last weekend saw the 10,000th Covid vaccine given in the Top of the South. Included in this number were vaccines given to residents at local rest homes.

The New Zealand Aged Care Association said the roll-out across the Nelson Tasman Marlborough region was a benchmark for other areas, with many other rest homes around the country still waiting to hear from DHBs about a start date.

One resident at Stillwater Village, Colleen Lawson, has a tender arm but a smile on her face after being one of the first rest home residents in New Zealand to receive her Covid-19 vaccine. “The vaccine didn’t hurt but my arm is still a bit sore,” she says.

Colleen had mixed feelings prior to having her vaccine.

Diversional Therapist Shaz Blackburn spent time with her going over the consent form and answering her questions.

“Everyone has to sign a consent form with things on it like ‘are you pregnant’. Colleen was ruled out of pregnancy and

breast feeding,” jokes Shaz.

Around 65 residents were vaccinated and Shaz said there were no serious reactions.

“We explained before the vaccine that it feels like a dead arm and can feel heavy. But no one has grown any tails or horns.

We’re all good,” says Shaz.

The booster vaccine will be given in about three weeks, and then there will be a further three to four weeks before the residents are given the flu vaccine.

Of the 135,585 given there have been six serious reactions reported and 209 considered non serious. Three of the serious reactions were reported in the week to 13 April and two of those were considered allergic reactions and the Ministry of Health website says they were managed appropriately.

According to the website, the third serious case was a reactogenicity reaction, where the patient experienced flu-like symptoms.

The Waimea Community Dam reservoir is unlikely to be made available for public use.

“The plan at this stage is to just get the dam finished and operational,” says Chris Choat.

The New Zealand Walking Access Commission says the Tasman District Council should be planning how people can get up the Lee Valley to the dam, rather than waiting until it has been built.

Nelson Matters Two votes in Parliament last Wednesday on first responders and police dogs highlights the differences between Labour MP Rachel Boyack and myself.

The Protection for First Responders Bill is about ambulance officers, firefighters, police, nurses, doctors and corrections officers who put themselves in harm’s way to help others and keep our community safe. It is appalling when

they are assaulted doing this work and it is happening more often. St John’s plea for support for the Bill reported 950 assaults on their staff. Nurses recorded an increase of violence in A&E with 90% of staff being assaulted sometime during their career. People who assault these frontline staff deserve tougher penalties. I am pleased to have supported this Bill and am at a loss as to why Ms Boy-

ack voted against it.

I also voted for changes to the Policing Act to better protect Police dogs. 24 have been killed in the line of duty. The Justice Ministry advised that it is an anomaly that under the Animal Welfare Act a person can be sentenced to five years imprisonments for killing a pet dog, but intentionally killing a police dog is deemed of lesser value with a maximum two

years imprisonment.

The penalty is five years in Australia and Canada and 10 years in the US. The Police Association strongly supported the change. I have also heard from Nelson Police dog handlers angered that Nelson’s Labour MP voted against it.

These proposed penalties are not harsh and are maximum sentences. Judges rarely use the maximums set by Parliament.

Most sentenced prisoners only serve about half their actual sentence with parole.

We should all support those who help in emergencies and work to keep Nelson safe. The local ACT MP voted with me on both bills but both were voted down. All three of Nelson’s MPs should have voted for protecting our first responders and police dogs.

An affordable home will become a reality for three more families in the Nelson Tasman region.

The new partnership between the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) and Habitat for Humanity provides hands-on training for carpentry students, along with new houses.

“This is a great outcome for our community, with local trainees obtaining a trade through the support of local businesses who, in turn, are provided decent homes for members of the community,” says Habitat for Humanity Nelson general manager Nick Clarke.

Recipients of the houses will be selected through a vetting and criteria process by Habitat for Humanity but are geared for low to moderate income families. The three houses fall under the Habitat for Humanity Progressive Home Ownership Programme which is a rent-to-buy system.

“There is quite a rigorous selection process for the families interested in partnering with us–based on their housing need, their ability to manage the financial side of home ownership and their willingness to dedicate mahi or sweat equity to the project,” says Nick.

“Keeping the three houses the same makes it a more achievable task for the students and the trainers and it also makes it easier for removal of the completed houses to their final site,” says NMIT programme coordinator Eddie Shields.

“Securing three house builds provides real-life experience for our students. The tutors are there to support them and work alongside them, but the students get as close to a real building project as you can,” Reid says.

Once completed, the houses are relocated to their final sites and then receive a quality valuation by the local authority.

New exercise programme for men Jacqui Rawson The Richmond aquatic centre are running a new exercise programme for men living with prostate cancer.

“We’re really excited to be able now offer this programme in Nelson Tasman,” says Prost-FIT instructor Leigh Dalzell.

According to Kris Tynan from Exercise as Medicine, originators of the Prost-FIT programme research show there are significant benefits from exercise that may assist with recovery and delay advance of the disease.

The right exercise mix can reduce the side effects of common prostate cancer treatments like ADT, and exercise can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression often experienced by men with prostate cancer.

Prost-FIT sessions include strength, balance, pelvic floor, cardio, agility, flexibility, cognitive challenges, and finish with important guided relaxation.They also offer men a chance to find camaraderie and improve mental health.

There will be a free session tomorrow, Thursday 22nd April 1-2 pm, and ongoing sessions will be from 1-2 pm on Wednesdays, all at the CLM Fitness Centre. Cost is $10.

Comedy roadshow comes to town Jo Kent Reporter

This weekend’s Comedy Gold show at Room Twenty5 is the first gig of its kind in Tasman. Top kiwi comedians Andre King, Nick Rado and Pax Assadi are set to perform at the Richmond venue on Saturday with a view to making it a regular event.

Andre has recently moved to Redwood Valley with his wife and is keen to shake things up in terms of entertainment for the region.

“House prices drove me out of Auckland so I’m settled here now,” says Andre. “Other top name comedians who are usually doing a world tour have been forced back to New Zealand, unable to go anywhere. So these shows probably would never have happened had the world not been hit by a global pandemic!”

Room Twenty5 is a bespoke venue where the crowd bring their own

chairs, alcohol and even food to put on the BBQ. Owned by Geoff and Sheree Sherlock, the couple have transformed their garage into a something dreams are made of for live performers. With a stage, top-grade sound system and a professional lighting rig, they usually host bands. This will be the first time they’ve put on a comedy gig.

“We’re really excited to be trying something different,” says Geoff.

“And, as usual, the performers get all the money from the ticket sales – we don’t take a cent.”

Fans snapped up tickets for the sell-out gig in just a few days, which has convinced Andre there is huge demand for a regular comedy night outside of Nelson. “We’re thinking bi-monthly at the moment,” says Andre. “But that could become more regular once we bring in other comedians to offer even more material.”

Comedy Gold is at The Playhouse in Mapua and Room Twenty5 again later this year.

Major Douglas Alexander Dron – A Spring Grove lad Marg Farrelly Douglas Alexander Dron, the son of William and Elizabeth Dron of Spring Grove, was born in 1890.

While at Nelson College, 1904 - 1909, he spent six years in the college cadets, one of those as an officer. He also served in the Senior Cadets under the territorial scheme for 9 months while teaching in Reefton. When appointed to a teaching position in Golden Bay, he transferred to the Takaka Senior Cadets.

After completing his teaching exams and gaining his teachers license in 1911, he began teaching at Cornish Town, near the Globe Hill Mine, not far from Reefton. Resigning this position during 1912, he then

moved to a similar position at Tarakohe in Golden Bay. It was while there he joined up to fight in World War 1.

At the time of joining the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in 1914, Douglas was in the service of the Nelson Education Board as the headmaster of Tarakohe School. He was 28 years of age.

After his experience with the Territorial Cadets, he was given the rank of Lieutenant.

His service with the New Zealand Forces saw him landing on Gallipoli shortly after the first attack. While in action in the Dardenelles in June 1915, he was wounded after being hit by shrapnel. After six months, he returned to the Peninsula and was one of the last of the infantry officers to leave during the

His promotion to Captain was granted in July 1916 and he saw further action at the battle of the Somme. October that year saw him wounded

once again, and he was invalided to England. The following year, in September 1917, he led his company in the attack on Passchendaele, after which he was given the temporary rank of Major. April 1918 saw this

rank confirmed and he became second-in-command of the 4th (res) Battalion. Douglas was sent to England in March 1918 but was recalled to France, taking part in all the severe fighting until his death in action, on 8 October of that year. Just prior to his death a bullet from a German machine gun passed through his leg. While sitting up attempting to bandage the wound he was then hit in the chest by a burst of machine gun fire, dying shortly thereafter.

Douglas is buried in the Honnechy British Cemetery, Honnechy, Departement du Nord, Nord-Pas-Calais, France. His name is to be found on the marble Roll of Honour on the gateway at the entry to the Spring Grove Domain.

Fundraising on an ebike Jacqui Rawson

The first community organised ebike ride was a great success with 85 riders turning up on Saturday.

The pack, which included riders from the Nelson City Council, representatives from the Great Taste Trail as well as MP Rachel Boyack, headed off from Waimea Plains Village towards Rabbit Island along part of the Great Taste Trail.

“I had a vision to do a cool community event with fun riding, a get together and having lunch to ex-

change stories about past rides and a fundraiser for a good cause, and we ticked all boxes,” says organiser Frank Witowski.

They congregated back at the Waimea Plains Village who played host to a BBQ lunch.

Hybrid Bikes Ltd were the masterminds behind the event along with the support of Arvida Waimea Plains Village.

“There are so many community events going on and we wanted to be the first to create one that involved ebikes,” says Frank.

Local businesses supported the event, along with the donation of prizes for a fundraising raffle.

Frank wanted the fundraising side of the event to go towards a strongly respected organisation in the local community and so chose the Nelson/Tasman Hospice.

“I had a fundraising target of $1000 and we raised $1145, which was fantastic,” says Frank.

Organisers want this first-time event to continue as an annual event that provides a fun fundraising and riding community event.

Shorter days and cooler weather have decreased the water temperature slowly and in a few weeks the snapper season in the Bay will come to an end. But not yet! Before they move towards deeper waters the snapper build up reserves for the winter – and the food is abundant.

With this it is not surprising that the fishing is still excellent, we are getting reports of large numbers of snapper being caught in all areas, from barely legal to 80cm plus. Huge baitfish schools attract countless kahawai and there seem to be particularly many trevally around at the moment.

Most members of the trevally family can be found in tropical waters and have a reputation as hard fighting game fish – our variety makes no exception.

They have a similar range of food sources to snapper which means that the same methods can be used to catch them.

Burley works very well and since they have relatively small mouths, smaller hook and bait sizes are preferable. Flasher rigs and stray lines are the way to go when fishing with bait, but lures can be very productive as well.

Soft baits and small jigs will do the trick but when they are

“My favourite part was going down the big rapids and watching our instructor flying overboard,” says Baton Senior House Leader, Lacey Burnett.

The leaders were representing their different schoolhouses in

three rubber rafts, starting up the Buller River and ending at the Owen River confluence.

Students had the opportunity to learn about river safety.

“I think it is important that we learn to work with each other despite the differences we may have,” says Tadmor Senior House Leader, Tomas Girodo.

“I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and I thought it was a great way of building leadership and teamwork. It was a good day to just unwind and be ourselves no matter our differences,” says Baton senior house leader, Janette Chetham.

Or in other words “The only thing that never changes, is that everything changes”! As a general rule, most people are resistant to change, especially radical change.

However, we have seen many things change over the last year, right throughout the world.

Who could have foreseen the complete upheaval that every country has undergone because of the Covid-19 restrictions?

We have had to change our ways as to travel, social contacts, hygiene, mask wearing, and many other things, and most of us are “Over it” aren’t we?

We just wish things could go back to normal. We would like to go back into our comfort

zone and not worry about such things.

I’ve had the same car for 65 years. It was my first car, and I

still have it. It is in much better condition now than I am, even though I am 10 years younger than it. That is because I have given it much care and attention with new upholstery, paint, mechanicals, maintenance, etc. etc. so that it is now much better than when I first got it, even after half a million miles.

When I pass I trust that it will go to someone who will look

after it the same way that I have.

Likewise, when we pass from this life, we can trust that we will go into a place that will care for us as well. The Bible says in the book of Hebrews Ch. 13 v. 8 “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” . Here is something that never changes! In a world of continual change, the love of Jesus Christ is a constant. God sent His Son into the World, so that all who believe in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life (John 3:16) This is confirmed in the New testament in 1st Peter 1:4 which says that “There is an inheritance that does not fade away (does not change!) reserved in heaven for you.”

This message of God’s love is still as valid today as it was when first preached over 2000 years ago. Why not consider a change to the way that never changes?

New treatment for sun damage Jenny Nicholson It’s not just skin the local sun is harsh on. Nelson Tasman’s sun rays cause oxidation of joinery which leaves a chalky look to aluminium windows and garage doors.

New technology to fix the problem was introduced to New Zealand in 2014, and last year Richard and Karyn Hogue set up Nano-Clear to cover the Nelson Tasman, Greymouth, and Marlborough regions.

At the time the couple were living in Greymouth but shifted to Nelson this month and are enjoying

the region and being more central for the business.

“People paint their homes, and they look spic and span, but the window joinery looks awful. That’s where our product comes in,” says Richard.

He says people try all sorts to make their windows look good again, using olive oil, car wax and CRC, but that just makes things worse.

Pilot with amazing history shares his expertise After qualifying as a schoolteacher, Mark Woodhouse began his aviation career in the RNZAF in 1981. He flew Iroquois helicopters operationally, before completing the RNZAF Flying Instructors course. In 1990, Mark joined Massey University’s School of Aviation and in 1992, he was appointed manager, Flying Instruction (CFI).

Two years later, he joined Air Nelson and became a SAAB 340 Training Captain, and CRM facilitator.

“Then I joined Air New Zealand in 2004, as a Second Officer on the Boeing 747-400, then a First Officer on the Boeing 787,” says Mark. For 20 years, Mark was CFI for the annual Walsh Memorial Scout Flying School.

“Currently, I am an A Category Flying Instructor, a GA Flight Examiner, and I’m involved in numerous avia-

tion training areas, including running ground courses and writing BTK and ATPL manuals.”

Mark was awarded the Director of the New Zealand CAA Flight Instructor Award, and in 2010, he received the Honourable Company of Air Pilots Pike Trophy, an international award given to those who make an outstanding contribution to the maintenance of high standards of civil flying instruction and safety.

Patron looking forward to reunion Jenny Nicholson Waimea Old Boys patron John McKenzie’s history with the club started 50 years ago when he finished school and shifted to Tasman for a building apprenticeship.

Starting at first five eight or fullback for the junior side, he went on to play for a Waimea Old Boys senior side until a ruptured achilles finished his playing days around 1976.

He then went on to coach the club’s first junior team, Senior B team and then Senior A team where success led to him taking on the role of Nelson Bays coach.

Another financial year is over, and even with the Covid-19 restrictions we have returned a very satisfying result.

The club is moving from strength to strength, and we have a very vibrant and strong management structure. There are many different sporting and cultural sections with a growing number of new members on a weekly basis.

We will be having our AGM in June and a number of positions within our management structure will be up to be contested for. So, I Roy Tomlinson ask our members to give some serious thought as to our future and where it lies.

Major development is in the extension of our present car park and trying to develop a more manageable courtesy coach system. To this end we have purchased another vehicle.

This in turn requires a greater pool of drivers, and for anybody prepared to help, their offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thursday night is club night with our weekly club draw. This week it’s $2,000 and it must go. Hope to see you there.

Last month, Sioux Line Dance hosted their annual social weekend at Club Waimea with groups attending from all over the North and South Islands, including others from the Nelson-Tasman region. Workshop instructor Wendy Prattley from Christchurch taught a good variety of dances for all levels of line dancing.

At Easter time, Club Waimea’s 4WD section went over to Collingwood where they took some backroad detours and got to enjoy some fabulous scenery including Wharariki Beach, Labryinth Rocks, Devil’s Boot and Farewell Spit. (Devil’s Boot).

Club 4WD Section Easter rolled around, and as in past years the 4WD section headed off on another excursion.

This year it was based in Collingwood, (maybe too close to Tinky’s Pub), but hey, we covered a lot of ground; some sedate and some to test the body and nerves.

There was great scenery and some many places to visit; Wharariki Beach, Labryinth Rocks, views of Farewell Spit, Cape Farewell, Waikoropupu Springs, a guided tour by Guide Rangi (aka Speedo) to the top of his son’s farm and then off into the manuka wilderness. Many

more stops, then finally up to the Cobb Dam, not to mention a final lunch at Riwaka Pub on the way home.

A great four days of fun and laughter awesomely organised by Leanne, Mouse and Billy T, thanks team.

If the answer is yes to any of the above, this is an invitation to become a driver of the Club Waimea Courtesy Coach on a Friday or Saturday night, which I’m you will find to be a rewarding experience.

All three Taylors Wanderers rugby teams were “on the road” on Saturday, with Div 1 and Women in Marlborough and the Div 2 heading to Collingwood.

Div 1 were without Fletcher Matthews and Ryan Coxon when they travelled to Picton for the contest against Waitohi and, as in last week’s encounter, Wanderers started very slowly and conceded a converted try in the opening minutes. However, they settled quickly, and some fine continuity play eventually led to a midfield break from Jacobus de Kock who sent Sione Holani free on the left wing, and when Sione was brought down just metres from the line, De Kock was on hand to drive over to level the score at 7-7. Another break by De Kock, supported by fellow back rower Chris Haluafia resulted in a free run in to Haluafia to score and give Wanderers a fully-deserved

At Spring Creek, the Taylors Wanderers 3 Bees Women team had their first game of the season against Moutere, concedei ng a late try to lose 19-14.

New coach, Alan Davis took his Taylors Wanderers Div 2 team, off to Collingwood. In what was an extremely challenging start to the season they were beaten 4512 by the hosts.

Great night for locals Staff Reporter

The final race at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway ended in high drama as the two leading cars crashed out of the Sunshine Classic Sprint car feature while in sight of the finish line. Wellington’s Stephen Taylor had led the 25-lap feature race from the start and was just metres from claiming the victory before colliding with a spinning back marker out of the final corner, sending both himself and Cromwell’s Daniel Anderson who was in 2nd spot, upside down. It was a dramatic conclusion to an epic weekend of Sprint car racing that had produced lap records, big spills and plenty of thrills as the 2-day event decided the Dirtworks South Island Sprint car title and the inaugural “Sunshine Classic”.

The crash benefited the 3nz car of Daniel Thomas who was unstoppable on night one, winning the South Island title and breaking the lap record in the opening time trials. He had made a few errors mid-race in the night dropping back a few places after looking strong in the opening laps, however the crash put him into the lead to finish and claim the $3000 winner’s cheque and Sunshine Classic trophy. Anzac Day opening hours

Queen Street bus stop closure

All service centres will be closed for the public holiday on Monday 26 April. All our libraries will be closed on Sunday 25 April and Monday 26 April.

Usual opening hours apply otherwise. We are always here to help when needed though, call 03 543 8400 for assistance in an emergency, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Queen Street bus stops will be closed on Sunday 25 April 2021 due to a road closure in place for the Richmond Anzac Day Parade. A temporary bus stop will be set up on Talbot Street (opposite PAK’nSAVE) for the duration of the day. Alternatively, catch the bus from the Salisbury Road bus stop between Talbot and Florence Street. We apologise for any inconvenience.

There are no changes to the rubbish and recycling collections. All our Resource Recovery Centres will be open as normal.

Richmond roundabout changes The Champion/Salisbury Road roundabout upgrade is nearly finished. There are a few things you need to bear in mind as the lanes re-open and you use the roundabout as normal again: • There are raised tables on the approach to the roundabout on Champion Road and Salisbury Road.

These include zebra crossings and priority cycle lanes. » Vehicles will need to give way to pedestrians and cyclists on these crossings. » Pedestrians and cyclists need to look for approaching vehicles and make sure it’s safe to cross – never assume that drivers have seen you.

• There are two lanes out of Salisbury Road.

• There are two lanes out of Champion Road East.

• The access lane from the Richmond Deviation has been removed.

• The temporary roundabout at Templemore Drive will be removed next week.

During construction you were used to driving straight through the roundabout. As it re-opens, please remember to look for traffic and give way as usual.

Improvements on the way for Māpua Wharf Māpua's wharf precinct is now set to get even better with an upgrade starting in early May. The work will improve the look and feel of Ngāio Reserve, which is the area between the Golden Bear Brewery and the wharf. Seating and picnic tables will be added, shrubs and trees planted, a play area included, bike racks installed, and the uneven concreted areas levelled and re-sealed to tie in with existing improvements.

The upgrade has been in the planning since 2017, when the wider Māpua community and local iwi worked with us to create a master plan for the waterfront area prioritising seven of the most important actions to take. The working group gave Ngāio Reserve the highest priority for action.

Because the area is a significant archaeological site, a heritage plan is in place and ground disturbance will be kept to a minimum. The work will be carried out in stages to reduce the area closed to the public and minimise disruption for neighbouring businesses.

Rural Travel Fund applications closing soon Last chance to apply for the Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund. The Sport NZ Rural Travel Fund offers help with travel costs for rural sports clubs and rural school teams. The fund is to help young people aged 5 to 19 participate in local sports competitions. Sport NZ fully funds the Rural Travel Fund, which we administer locally on their behalf.

2020 lockdown quilt Have you seen our amazing community quilt yet?

It's at the Richmond library until Thursday 29 April and will then move to the Motueka Library. This extraordinary community project was the result of dozens of local stitchers, from school children to octogenarians, responding to the call to stitch a piece of fabric with a word or image relating to their experience of Level 4 lockdown.

Local textile artist Christine McGuigan joined all the pieces together into a gorgeous quilt.

To all who attended the Welcome to his World Memoriam Service and Last Waltz and support we thank you. He touched all of us in so many ways making his life varied, busy, and enjoyable.
