World’s fastest mini Phillip Rollo

A Nelson Mini has clocked an average speed of 235.9 kilometers per hour to etch its name into the world record books for a new land speed record in its class. Dubbed Project ‘64, the 1964 Mini Cooper S driven by Nelson Hartley, the brother of former Red Bull Formula 1 prodigy Brendon Hartley, reached a top speed of 151.087mph through a three mile short course on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah last week. It beats the previous record of 210kmh held by the Hudson Boys. To break the record, the 1964 Mini had to beat the previous time in the second and third mile of a

three mile course. It then went into “impound” for four hours, giving the crew enough time to correct any faults before taking to the salt flats for a second time. The Mini had to beat its previous speed in the second attempt and both speeds were then accumulated and calculated into an average over the mile. The Mini was competing in the I/BGCC class, which is determined by engine size, in this case up to 1000cc, supercharged and competition coupe. The entire crew included driver Nelson, who helped build the engine with his father Bryan, Nelson based race car and classic restorers

Nelson College for Girls principal Cathy Ewing is used to addressing an audience in the school’s main hall, but doing it while strutting and posing was something new. The principal was a surprise guest model at the Spring Fashion Fling at the school on Saturday night. The event was organised by the the school’s PTA as a fundraiser. Head of the PTA Brenda Holdaway says $3400 was raised from the show, which featured students and staff modelling clothes from local retailers. Brenda says she was happy with the turnout. “It was a very successful night which has set the stage for future events to be held. The students and teachers who modelled made the event the success it was just by being so fantasic on stage. The crowd loved watching them.” A huge range of spot prizes was donated by local businesses, including a car from Bowater Hyundai for a weekend to get to two nights accommodation in Hanmer Springs. The money raised from the show will be used to buy video cameras and document cameras for the classroom. Brenda says the event will happen again. “We learned a lot from that show and there are some things we will do differently next time but it was a fantastic night and it was great to see everyone up on the catwalk.” wheelchairs mobility scooters walker/canes electric beds ands hoists lift assist chairs bathroom solutions incontinence products daily living aids/products

Lean start to whitebait season

There has not been the usual rush to the Motueka River this August with poor conditions and a decline in whitebait, welcoming fishermen to the new season. The season officially opened on August 15, however, Simon Bailey of the Department of Conservation expects the banks of the local riverbeds to remain empty for the coming weeks. He says word of mouth from experienced whitebaiters has been that the fish could be at a 30 year low. “I’ve been doing patrols for seven years and there has been an overall decline,” Simon says. “There are not many people around at the moment because things haven’t kicked off that quickly.” The season closes November 30.

Guy Griffith and Garry Orton, who work out of Victory R at the World of Wearable Arts and Classic Cars Museum, Alltrax NZ’s Garry Grant and Christchurch based Mini guru Larry Mullholland of Swift Automotive. In addition to the team, 25 supporters were in Bonneville for the record attempt. Most of those supporters came from Nelson but there were a handful from Canada and other parts of New Zealand. Project spokesperson Mike Wilson says the group was “very happy” to have broken the land speed record, despite acknowledging that the Mini had potential to go faster. The crew celebrated with cheers, hugs, a nice dinner and champagne all round, the latter two courtesy of

sponsor Peter Talley. “It feels very special, especially since we achieved it with a car that really shouldn’t have been able to do it. Minis have always been known for their cornering ability but never for their straight line speed,” says Mike, speaking from Utah. “On the morning of our first qualifying run the Bonneville Speedway radio station was playing some archive tapes of Burt Munro speaking and he was talking of the fact the anyone could buy a new bike and go fast, but to break records with an old bike was a much more interesting challenge.” Next on the agenda will be plenty of sleep and spending time with their families, says Mike. There has been talk of other events such as Pikes Peak, but there could also be another return to Bonneville next year.

Ultra-fast broadband on its way One of Nelson’s oldest streets was one of the first to have ultra-fast broadband fibre installed last week with another 20,000 premises to be hooked up over the next year. Last Thursday Chorus, along with the government, announced its roll out of ultra-fast broadband to the region. A network of 150km of fibre cable is already available for businesses in the Nelson CBD but the latest announcement will see it go into four new schools, businesses and homes around the region. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the announcement is exciting for the region

and will further bring Nelson closer to the rest of the world. “This is great news for Nelson and great news for Richmond. It will make us a more effective and productive region in a more effective and productive country,” he says. The rollout is part of the government’s $1.35 billion investment in high-speed broadband nationwide. The new speed will allow speeds of 100 megabytes per second, from around the standard three mega-bytes per second currently. Communications and information technology minister Amy Adams was on hand to announce the rollout and

says that by July next year around 6000 businesses, medical premises and households in the two regions will be covered by the network, as well as four schools. “High-speed broadband will mean more students at Nelson and Richmond schools will be able to share resources like physics and IT teachers. Students will be able to take part in virtual classrooms and courses that might not be available at their own schools. They could even learn French from a teacher in Paris.” Local firms Transfield Services and Adcock and Donaldson are working on installing the new fibre cables.

Surgeons do 180 extra operations Surgeons in Nelson and Marlborough did 180 more surgeries than budgeted for over the past year, earning high praise in the process. Figures released by health minister Tony Ryall last week showed that the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board did 6209 operations, above its target of 6029. Just as impressive was the fact that not one of its patients had to wait more than six months for an operation. The DHB also provided 13,468 first specialist assessments to decide whether or not people required an operation and this was 2682 above its annual target. Dorothy McKeown, service manager for surgical services says the elective teams did a terrific job to surpass its elective target, while at the same time ensuring that no one was waiting longer than six months for their planned procedure or

their specialist assessment. “The commitment by all teams to these goals was remarkable. We were required to support this with extra resources that were not budgeted for, however we have achieved our targets, which in turn is great for our community.” Five years ago Nelson MP Nick Smith was helping locals with around 200 complaints about the health system each year, that number is down to two a year. Nick says the results are remarkable, and a real credit to the hospital staff who put in a huge effort to achieve them. “A decade ago, a large part of my constituency work was dealing with delays in the health system. Now I get very few of these cases. I congratulate the DHB staff and board members for succeeding in the challenge that our Government set around surgeries and reduced waiting times.’’

Geek Speak!

Computer caught a cold - or maybe something more serious? This week we’re looking at viruses and malware. Firstly, prevention - the top three sources of computer infection are: Malicious websites. Doesn’t have to be an XXX site. Some websites that appear innocent can be just as harmful to you. Tip: Some search engines flag risky websites when displaying results. Search the web address first. Unsolicited email. Has either an attachment to open or directs you to a website. Tip: If you’re not expecting, it don’t open it. Rolex under $100, $10 million in a Nigerian bank, Dr Uzbeki exiled dissident needing your help – none of them exist. Chain email. Whether a life affirming message or ‘hilarious’ joke your best mate just had to share with you, it could spell danger. Tip: Preview it, don’t open it. Looks suspect, delete it. So now you know what not to do, get some protection for when you do it anyway. If you want to spend money these 3 are tops: Bitdefender Plus 2012; Webroot SecureAnywhere ; Norton AV 2012 - great products, great value. LETTERS

TO THE EDITOR

Nelson council staff member Reuben Peterson should be commended for his excellent work on the inner city plan change which will soon be notified for consultation. The plan change presents a basic framework for managing noise issues in the central city. It is a great pity that the recently notified resource consent regarding noise for outdoor events was not assigned to Reuben. His oversight would have ensured that the proposal by the council was consulted

on properly. Nelson residents could have had certainty that someone of great competence and integrity was dealing with the proposal. Instead, council staff have apparently rammed through measures that will cause legal issues for years to come. After wasting upwards of a million dollars on the proposal, which not one Nelson resident supported, the council will obtain a consent that is going to cause it problems for many years unless it is radically modified. Band hoping for text support While one Nelson band awaits confirmation to see if it will contest the national Smokefreerockquest final, another is hoping to drum up enough support to open the billing. Fire Without Permit, consisting of twins Rigel and Bowyne Blanchet from Nelson College as well as Hana Tava, Jordan Harvey and Jacob King of Waimea College, was chosen as the Skinny People’s Choice band when the Nelson final was held in May. All of the regional winners in this category, who have not reached the final, are now eligible to open for the eight finalists at the national final in

Hamilton on September 22. The winning band will also get its flights and accommodation paid for. The voting process will remain the same for the nationwide competition with members of the public able to text the name of the band they would like to see reach the final. You can vote for each act by sending the band name with no spaces to 5678. Texts cost 20 cents and voting closes on September 14 at 2pm. Meanwhile, Nelson College jazz folk trio New Vinyl is one of 20 bands, consisting of regional winners and runners up, in the running to compete in the national final.

Tree planting, a good world cup hangover

From My Desk

Father’s Day is just around the corner on 2 September and Fashion Island would like to help spoil your dad. So with this in mind, I am up for a browse to find some great ideas and gifts. On Hardy St I stroll first into Rodd and Gunn. The new range of polo shirts is a great idea and the leather accessories are made in NZ. The luggage is exquisite. Even for the fisherman in the family there is a leather/ sheepskin fly wallet. Just along the road is Barkers. Adoring the new shirts that have just been unpacked, and also their selection of canvas bags. Heading back around to The Rock Box, and not focusing on what I could buy - but the guys have great choice in jeans, shirts and jackets in awesome brands. With George Clooney peering at me from the windows of Sunglass Style, the range of driving, sport and casual sunglasses is another option. The range of men’s soaps moisturisers and gift packs from The Body Shop and Lush also make an easy choice for dad’s gifts. Next stop Living and Giving, and if your dad is a genius in the kitchen, or on the BBQ, there is plenty to choose from. Just Jeans have a fantastic range of jeans like Levi, Calvin Klein, check out Jay Jays for tees, and for dad’s desk at the office-contemporary pens and pads can be found at Smiggles. Bring the family in for a brunch or lunch at Morrison Street Café or Columbus Coffee for a catch up, and make your dad, husband, or partner feel extra special.

More than 2000 native trees were planted at Wakapuaka by 38 volunteers on Saturday. The planting was part of the Living Legends project that was launched as part of the legacy to last year’s Rugby World Cup. The five year project aims to plant 170,000 trees throughout New Zealand by 2015. On Saturday 2100 trees were planted at the Wakapuaka Wildlife Reserve, in honour of Tasman legend Todd Blackadder. Each region’s planting project is dedicated to a local rugby legend. Todd Blackadder was selected as the Tasman Rugby Legend in 2011. Unfortunately Todd was unable to attend Saturday’s event but he will visit the site when he is in Nelson later this week for the Tasman vs Canterbury rugby clash this weekend. “It’s an honour for me to have been recognised as a rugby legend as part of Living Legends, I think it’s a great initiative to bring rugby and conservation together.” Living Legends has now planted a total of 7000 native trees at Wakapuaka.

Local people with local knowledge Founded in 1996 by the McKeown family, Trends Kitchens takes pride in bringing quality kitchens and joinery to South Island homes. Unlike franchise owned companies with a limited product range, Trends Kitchens can provide you a custom made kitchen produced by our own certified tradesmen, in our own factory. As the demand for this style of designer kitchen service spread around the South Island, so have Trends Kitchens showrooms and branches. Not long after we opened a branch in Nelson, we found people were coming all the way from Blenheim to see us. We were happy to create a site to accommodate our Blenheim clients, and our Renwick showroom was born. Today, you can walk into a Trends Kitchens showroom in Nelson, Blenheim, Cromwell or Christchurch, and meet with a local designer who can offer you a free measure and quote for the perfect kitchen to accompany your new home or renovation.

When you confirm your purchase with Trends Kitchens, you’re eligible for a no obligation interior design consultation from the team at ColourPlus, to compliment your new kitchen. Ask our friendly staff for details.

If you’ve been in business for a while now you will know that word-ofmouth marketing is the best and most cost effective advertising there is. With over 130 BNI chapters nationwide with more than 2500 members, BNI (Business Networking International) has become the professional referral networking organisation of choice for New Zealand business owners.

Member success stories:

When I arrived in Nelson over 5 years ago I knew absolutely no one, had no contacts, no networks, no customers, no friends. Back then there was only 1 BNI chapter in the region and I joined it immediately. Becoming a BNI member was one of the best business decisions I have made to date in my business. BNI helped me get my business

What is BNI?

BNI (Business Network International) is the world largest business and professional referral organisation with over 140,000 members in 48 countries. The organisations primary purpose is to exchange qualified business referrals and develop word-of-mouth marketing techniques. Unlike other networking groups, BNI provides its members with a structure and a plan to enable them to network in a deliberate and professional manner. As an organisation, BNI keeps track of the number of referrals passed by each chapter and encourages the members to record the dollar value of the business they receive. BNI allows only one person per business category to join a chapter ensuring that you lock out your competition when you join. If you run a small or medium sized business, or operate in a sales or marketing function in a larger business, chances are that you could build your sales revenues substantially by joining a BNI chapter. Becoming a member of BNI is a bit like instantly acquiring a new team of sales people who are looking for opportunities for your business. Astonishing results have been achieved by people from a very diverse range of businesses through involvement with BNI

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: I have got behind in my power bill, and now owe a lot of money. The power company is going to disconnect my power if I don’t pay all the arrears. They won’t let me pay the debt off weekly. What shall I do? Shall I change to another power company? A: You will have to pay your power arrears to keep your power connected. Grant, who will be judging a separate category from the one Nic is competing in, says the competition will be tough for Nic and to help him prepare he put the recipe he is cooking in the competition on the menu over the weekend. "The best way to learn is to do, so once he decided what he was doing we put it on the menu so he could get used to cooking it," says Grant. Nic competed late yesterday but the results were not in before Nelson Weekly went to print. His result will be online at nelsonweekly.co.nz tonight and the recipe that Nic cooked will be on the Mint menu until this weekend.

New trust to give $30K a year to local athletes Andrew Board A new sports trust has been set up in Nelson to assist athletes of all ages with their sporting dreams. Michele Surcouf ’s idea to set up and run a trust was given the green light by the Charities Commission this month and she isn’t wasting any time, with the first applications for the $15,000 in the kitty due by the start of September. The Sports Nelson Tasman Trust will consider applications twice a year with the minimum of $15,000 available each six months. The five trustees will decide who

The trust hopes to encourage other donors to be a part of the concept to help lift the minimum annual amount from the $30,000 that has been pledged indefinitely. Michele is also planning some fundraisers for the trust and hopes to make a “real” difference to the region's sporting talent. Tennis juniors tough it out

Nelson tennis player Henry Neas in action during Saturday's Junior Open Championship at the Tasman Tennis Centre in Richmond. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The Nelson Junior Winter Tennis Open turned into a full one day tournament with rain causing play to be abandoned on Sunday for the rest of the tournament. Wakefield’s Marshall Hore had a very successful tournament in the 10's boys beating the third seed Jenner Johnson from Canterbury 9-7 in the quarter final and then knocking out second seed Diego Quispe-King of Canterbury 9-7 in the semi-final. Marshall then met the top seed from Otago, Thomas Hartono who was too strong, winning the match 0-9. In the 10's girls Kyla Otway from Marlborough was too strong for Tasman's Kate Edens winning the

match 6-9. The 12's boy’s plate final was a close encounter between Nelson's Renze van Duijn and Harry McLauchlin. The match went down to the wire with Harry winning 9-8. Sasha Glotov won the 14's boys final over Joshua Snowdon-Poole and in the play off for third and fourth place Marlborough's Lee Harbone was too strong for Tasman's Sam Edens with Harborne taking third place 0-6, 1-6. Nelson's top junior Henry Neas had a convincing semi-final win before meeting Wellington's Pratt Keerasuntonpong who proved to be too strong for the local, winning the match 6-0, 6-1.

Semi final time for top netball sides Fifteen games each in the regular season count for nothing now as the slate is wiped clean for the semi finals of the 2012 Premier Championship which will be played at Saxton Stadium this Thursday. Jacks OPD and Richmond Robbie’s Bar & Bistro will meet in the 1 v 2 playoff with the winner booking its place in the final, the loser will play the winner of the 3 v 4 semi between Waimea College and Stoke NBS on Saturday. Jacks OPD have gone through the regular unbeaten however they did not go unscathed as Stoke NBS grabbed a hard earned bonus point (finishing within five goals) in the third round and Richmond claimed a draw last week in a proverbial nailbiter. Jacks coach Robyn Leonard, admitted her players have had a number of good wins with some convincing score lines and have not really been under pressure until the game against Stoke. To its credit, Jacks

Nelson

knuckled down and “sorted it out” to take the win. The Richmond encounter was a tight one, with Richmond holding the lead until late in the third period. Jacks moved up a gear with powerful performances by mid courters Jodi Hikuroa and Moana Forbes who ensured that prolific shooters Ani Waitai and Leanne Cook had an abundance of quality ball. Come Thursday night though, the repeat of last week’s game will have a different look about it, due to the fact that New Zealand Women's Basketball finals are being played in Dunedin. Jacks will be without playmaker Jodi Hikuroa however Richmond will be a whole lot “worse off ” with Nicky Rampton, Kat Jones and Lisa Book on basketball duty. Jacks have a few options to replace Jodi at centre – there’s Moana or Tineil Stevenson and Kirsten Powick could also pull on the C bib.

If Jacks full court defence fires and the shooters continue in the same vein as they have all season it is difficult to see them being beaten. Richmond on the other hand, have more of a headache in filling the key goal attack position. Nicky Rampton is without a doubt the top goal attack in the competition and leaves big shoes to fill – both literally and figuratively. Nicky has been Richmond’s “go–to–girl” throughout the season, she shoulders a hefty load through court and is the predominant shooter, returning commendable statistics week in, week out. Without the basketball trio, Richmond still has seven regulars on its roster, add to the mix coach Amanda Springer who adds to the defensive end and it does have players in its Grade 1 and 2 teams who have premier experience and could fit into the groove quite nicely. At the back of its mind Richmond know it will have the Hula to full roster available for the final on 30 August however it has to win one more game before it can reach the final, be it against Jacks on Thurs4 nights from $1199 day or by facing Waimea or Stoke on Saturday. per person share twin Waimea College and Stoke * Return Economy Class airfares NBS have had some great to Honolulu flying Hawaiian battles throughout the regAirlines from Auckland. ular season – Stoke won * 4 nights accommodation and the first by a solitary goal, bonuses as specified. Lynne Olsen believes it will need to be a consistent four quarters and the least amount of errors that will pave the way for the win. Waimea has an abundance of talent within its ranks with Ella Marwick and Ashley Laing providing the experience through the mid court. Shaun Aindow has proved to be the revelation at goal shoot and takes everything in her stride returning good statistics while goal attack, Kayla Cross works hard in support of Shaun. It would be reasonable to say Stoke’s season has resembled a game of snakes and ladders – some ups, some downs however it appears to be improving at the right end of the season. It has versatility within its roster, however coach Priyani De Silva-Currie has had a reasonably settled line up in the championship round and is unlikely to experiment with untested combinations. Stoke manage to create a fair amount of turnover ball however, it is guilty of not always converting the hard won ball. Goal keep, Aleisha Cederman has turned in a number of tidy performances of late, while evergreen Melissa Edmonds-Whale can be relied upon to apply pressure on the circle edge. Hilary Jones is the energetic link through court while Abbie Cook gets through a power of work to deliver quality ball to her shooters, Megan Thomson and Kelsey Whiting. Waimea and Stoke have taken it to one another during the season and Thursday’s game is another that is more than likely to go right down to the wire. At 6pm Waimea College will play Stoke NBS, while Broadgreen Oaks play Waimea Intermediate 8A for the Sue Dahlberg Trophy. Jacks OPD meet Richmond at 7pm.

Tasman 7s ranks boosted

The Tasman Rugby Union will send a women’s invitation sevens to Christchurch this weekend as the region looks to boost its ranks in one of the country's fastest growing sports. With rugby sevens set to be included in the 2016 Olympic Games, the number of registered women’s players has hit an all-time high. This was evident at the latest Women’s 7s Challenge held at Jubilee Park on Saturday with the skills on show already improving from the inaugural tournament last weekend. Stoke – led by New Zealand international Moana Forbes – went through unbeaten but the score lines were a much tighter affair. Other teams included Waimea Old Boys, Marist and Nayland College. Tasman selector Mike Kerrisk highlighted the pathway Moana has shown, along with teammate Rebecca Kersten who reached the New Zealand training squad, as a big incentive for women to join the sport. A women’s grade will also be included at the Tasman Rugby Sevens Championship at Trafalgar Park later in the year.

spring rush as it's only 8 weeks before the snapper will be back. With the cold, wet and wintry days this is the perfect time to thoroughly inspect and carry out some maintenance on your boat trailer. This will extend its life and help promote trouble-free boating. • Obvious items include checking tyre pressures; looking for signs of rust, wear and damage; checking and cleaning lights and reflectors regularly; and lubricating the tow coupling, winch bushes, gears and brake mechanisms. • Salt water and salt-laden air is a trailer’s biggest enemy, and even though your trailer is galvanised, corrosion can still occur. • Always wash your trailer after exposure to salt water and salt-laden wind. Salt deposits will shorten the life of the zinc coating and your trailer. • Periodic washing down, drying and then spraying the leaf springs will help prolong their life. • Wheel bearings should be checked and regreased at least twice a year, and replaced if worn – a DIY task. Wash your trailer on a regular basis with a solution of warm water and detergent. The inside of the chassis and cross members can be cleaned out by putting a hose into the drain holes and flushing out. This will help ensure your trailer is set to go for the start of the season.

The fishing around Nelson has been on the slow side for a while now with snapper moving to the deeper water over winter. There is still the odd big moocher hanging around for those keen enough to put the time in and will get rewarded. Good gurnard can be found in Delaware Bay and out wide in Tasman Bay now. Don’t forget to set your flounder net around the estuaries and inlets as good numbers are also showing up. For those with the bigger boats D’urville Island and around Stephens Passage are still producing good snapper and kingfish on the right day. Shimano Bottom Ships and Lucanus slow jigs have worked well lately to get some really big snapper. The kingfish are a little hit and miss at present with large numbers of boats targeting them making it hard to keep the noise down. Boats speeding around and lots of noise will make the schools break up and move away. Avoid fishing in the big packs of boats and move away to quieter waters and you should get rewarded. Scallops in Okiwi are in very poor condition and a voluntary closure is in place. With the size small and the meat not in good condition we ask every year why the season opens so early. Last thing to remember is to get your boat serviced now before the

FC Nelson Sprig & Fern was crowned champions of Nelson on Saturday, claiming the solitary point it needed from its clash with Nelson College to win the title. FC Nelson Sprig & Fern was in the box seat to claim the Nelson Pine Industries first division title over the weekend after beating club-mates FC Nelson Fuji-Xerox the week before. All it needed was a draw against a young Nelson College side on Saturday, after other results went its way, and it did enough with the match ending in a nil-all stalemate. There is one round remaining in the season for first division teams, before cup games kick in, but FC Nelson now has the trophies to the first and second division already in the bag. The new first division champions will play its final league game of the season against Nelson Suburbs at Saxton Field this Saturday. Coach Steve Bignall says they can afford to relax a little this weekend and enjoy the occasion. “I like to win every game but I’ll wait to see who’s available and maybe give one or two youngsters a game. On the weekend we had four players away so I played three young lads and they did well, a couple of 14 year olds and a 13 year old. It wasn’t pretty but we got a draw, I think they had a couple more chances than we did but they didn’t finish and our keeper had a good game. So all-in-all it was a good day.” In the other first division game, QSP Richmond Athletic beat FC Nelson Fuji Xerox 4-2.

diary

• Five container vessels including one 222m long, two general carriers, one tanker, a car carrier, the cement ships, a log ship, six big fishing vessels and 11 movements of smaller ones and a dredge departed for Tauranga. A busy week for the port. • What do you do when you see five men in a small launch with little freeboard all standing up not wearing lifejackets, moving about the marina… call for the oxygen. Either I am going to need it to get my breath back or they are going to need it after they go swimming. It appears to me that we are just not getting the message across. The Harbour Master's office is very grateful for the number of calls they received from concerned citizens. Unfortunately the clowns had moved on by the time we were notified, an accident just averted. • Is the cold bothering you? Imagine spending a period of time in the sea. Earlier in August police in another town of NZ were advised that a dinghy close to the shore had capsized. Later that day a body was found and the person had not been wearing a lifejacket. A very sad event for a family, so make sure that it is not your family grieving. • Several people have been spotted in Nelson recently in dinghies without lifejackets. That’s like driving without your seatbelt on.
