Just under 775,000 passengers either took off or landed at the airport, an increase of 7 per cent on the year before for the country’s fourth busiest airport. regularly to Christchurch to work,” says Kaye. “This has had a positive effect on our passenger numbers into Christchurch, although Wellington and Auckland are still the most popular services.” Passenger statistics show the number of passengers arriving from Wellington at around 38 per cent with 37 per cent to Auckland and the rest to Christchurch. Kaye says the figures bode well for the region’s economy and tourism. “We are very pleased with this trend which is a very positive indicator on the regional economy.” Air NZ Link now operates larger aircraft into Nelson so it can take more passengers. It has also increased its scheduled hours while the other two airlines that fly into Nelson – Sounds Air and Air2there – have both increased their services to meet the extra demand at the airport.
