bomb competition and much more. Phoenix were the early winners after day one, with athletics day next on the list. Points can also be accumulated throughout the year from participation in Stage Challenge and academic challenges. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
The number of passengers flying into Nelson Airport last year was the highest ever, according to statistics released this week. Just under 775,000 passengers either took off or landed at the airport, an increase of 7 per cent on the year before for the country’s fourth busiest airport. The figures are in line with those released a fortnight ago which show Tasman and Nelson are the fastest and third fastest growing regions in the country. Nelson Airport Ltd chief executive, Kaye McNabb, says that passenger numbers for each month in 2011 exceeded any of the figures from previous years. “While higher than usual numbers were expected to travel during the Rugby World Cup, the exodus out of Christchurch after each earthquake did have an effect, there are also a significant number travelling

regularly to Christchurch to work,” says Kaye. “This has had a positive effect on our passenger numbers into Christchurch, although Wellington and Auckland are still the most popular services.” Passenger statistics show the number of passengers arriving from Wellington at around 38 per cent with 37 per cent to Auckland and the rest to Christchurch. Kaye says the figures bode well for the region’s economy and tourism. “We are very pleased with this trend which is a very positive indicator on the regional economy.” Air NZ Link now operates larger aircraft into Nelson so it can take more passengers. It has also increased its scheduled hours while the other two airlines that fly into Nelson – Sounds Air and Air2there – have both increased their services to meet the extra demand at the airport.

Current project partners are the Hillary Himalayan Trust, In Time Trust and First Steps Himalaya, all in Nepal, and the Children of Haiti Project in Haiti. In Nelson, where the event was widely celebrated in 2011, there is again significant school and community involvement. Some retailers are going purple for the whole week.

Schools, pre-schools and communities from Nepal to California and throughout New Zealand will celebrate Purple Cake Day on 1 March this year, giving a big “thumbs up” to the two year old children’s charity. Purple Cake Day, established by Nelson woman Emily Sanson-Rejouis following the loss of her husband and two of her pre-school daughters in the Haiti earthquake in 2010, has been approached by schools internationally which want to make the celebration a part of their annual calendar. Last year proceeds were sent to Haiti and Christchurch. Emily says she is “honoured, humbled and inspired” that people are supporting Purple Cake Day around the world. “We received great sup-

French film fest coming to Suter
NEWS IN BRIEF
Hold on to your berets and pack a baguette or two because for the first time Nelson will be one of the hosting centres for the French Film Festival. Running from March 14 to 25 at the Suter Cinema, organisers say movie goers should get ready to have a good laugh, shed a few tears, and experience a great deal of action and surprise. Lisa Caron, president of Alliance Française Nelson-Tasman, says to host the screenings in Nelson is “very exciting” and great timing as this year there is a big focus on attracting young people along to the films. “We are hoping schools will come along and there has been re- Andrew Divett, Anne Wheeler and Lisa Caron of the Alliance Française Nelson-Tasman ally positive feedback,” says Lisa. ahead of the French Film Festival at the Suter next month. Remembering Chch quake The anniversary of Christchurch’s deadly earthquake will be remembered with a ceremony at the Nelson Cathedral tomorrow. On February 22 last year a 6.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Canterbury, killing 185 mainly in the Christchurch central business district. Since then thousands of Cantabrians have moved to the Nelson and Tasman district
as the region continues to move on from the quakes. Nelson mayor Aldo Miccio says the ceremony will give those who were affected by the quakes an opportunity to remember. “It was such a huge tragedy for all New Zealanders so it is good the Cathedral is putting on the ceremony and giving locals an opportunity to reflect and mourn.”

To remember the quake and those who died, the Cathedral is hosting a Prayer for Christchurch. It will be held on Wednesday, February 22 at 12.15pm. There will be time for silence and a candle lighting ceremony. Other services are being held throughout the country and especially in Christchurch, where a ceremony is expected to attract thousands.

Voting for amalgamation opens on March 31 and closes on April 21. lUckY loTTo ShoP: Richmond Night ‘n Day has officially sold the second highest number of major wins in Lotto history. Photo comp for Seaweek
Jo Thompson of the Cawthron Institute is encouraging people to enter the photo competition for Seaweek, early next month. Photo: Andrew Board.
A competition to celebrate Seaweek hopes to make sure the images of the week last a lifetime. Seaweek runs from March 3 and is an annual celebration of the sea and focuses on learning from the sea. It aims to excite and inspire all New Zealanders to renew their connections with the sea. Not just for children or those involved with formal education – it’s a time for all of us to get to know our ocean, its habitats, characteristics and inhabitants better. This year the Cawthron Institute is organising a photographic competition to take place at the end of the week. The online competition is open to everyone. There are four categories: Family
Big Day Out helps fund treatment for Phoenix The Phoenix Treatment Appeal started as a Facebook page and on Friday it graduated to a Big Day Out status. Victory Square was abuzz with activity, entertainment and laughter as close to a thousand people turned out in support of the unflappable Phoenix Stafford who took all the attention in his stride. “Phoenix has always been outgoing, but when you see him at an event like the one on Friday it is just amazing to see how much energy he has to give. He’s a kingpin at the best of times,” says organiser Tamika Cross. Phoenix has a cancerous tumour in his spine and is seeking alternative treatment after radiation and chemotheraphy failed to cure him. Tamika says you’ve got to remember Phoenix is a nine year old boy and he just wants to be running round with his mates climbing on the bouncy castles and singing karaoke. Audiences were entertained by the Darnz Hip-Hop Salsa Crew and the Victory Kapa haka group and there was “absolutely gorgeous food” in abundance. The event raised more than $6000 which will go towards alternative treatment for Phoenix. “The generosity of strangers, people who don’t even know us, is humbling,” says Tamika.
Fun; Ocean Life; Turning the Tide and a Children’s Category for those under 13. Entry is free and there are some seriously great prizes up for grabs including scuba diving, boat trips, kayak tours, books and swimming gear. To enter the photo competition visitors to our Friends of Cawthron Facebook page just have to ‘like’ the page and post a photo on our wall (with their name and the category they would like to enter the photo in). The competition starts on March 11. The Cawthron is also hosting teacher training and a community lecture for Seaweek. For more information about the week, visit www.seaweek.org.nz.

New road rules will test our drivers I love it when friends come home from several years overseas or even several years in other parts of New Zealand. The first time I catch up with them I hear the stories; how great it is to be home, it seems so small, so nice, so sunny. Then, almost inevitably, “what about the Nelson drivers?” As a proud Nelsonian I don’t find myself having to defend our city too often. On our driving though I’ve given up trying. Many Nelson drivers stink. Courtesy is thrown out the window, along with common sense and any will to stick to the road code.
of cars pile up in their rear-view mirror is smart driving. Or drivers who refuse to let cars from another lane merge because… well… god knows. But if you think you have to be on your toes now, just you wait. The road rules are set to change next month and oh boy, we can expect some fun. The right-hand rule will no longer apply as of March 25. If you are turning right you must give way to all traffic, removing the right-hand rule which has been in place
We hear about the gauntlet cyclists face each day, but it isn’t just them. Other vehicle users need to be on their toes or face the consequences. Ever driven around a two lane roundabout and all of a sudden the car in the right lane is forcing you into the kerb? I have many a time. In fact I now expect it and get pleasantly surprised when it doesn’t happen. And don’t even get me started about drivers who decide doing 80km per hour in a 100km/h zone while watching dozens
Free car seat checks offered Local child restraint experts are lining up to give parents a free child restraint check in town this weekend. Craig Smith, of Baby on the Move, says four child restraint experts will be on hand, along with police and members of the Parents Centre Association. They will check the restraints and offer advice and even free locking clips if they are needed. Craig says the check is being held at New World in Nelson this Saturday, February 25 from 2.304.30pm. “We had so many people come through last time and so many were not fitted correctly so this is a great chance for parents to come on down and get some free advice.” Diona New Zealand has come on board to sponsor the locking clips says Craig and further advice can be sought from the police or members of the Parents Centre. “Hopefully people will take advantage of this again and we get a really good turn out,” says Craig.

What to wear to work? If you look through your wardrobe and decide it is time to liven up your professional look, then I suggest you make time to visit Jacqui E. They have the working week covered by a range of tailored suiting, smart separates and contemporary shirt and blouse options. The store has a smart personal feel as you walk around the perfectly placed items. The inspiration is a contemporary style from smart work wear and versatile casual to the perfect piece for a special occasion. I am always impressed by the quality of fabrics and styling. Congratulations to our winner from the Valentines promotion, Racheal Brown who shopped at Cotton On kids. Racheal enjoyed a lovely Valentine’s Day lunch at Morrison Street Café and then went on to spend her gift voucher in the centre. We are starting our Fashion Island Mall Fit programme today which will run every Tuesday at 5.45pm. We will be meeting outside The Rock Box in Fashion Island, so grab a friend, even your dog, and your sneakers and we will be heading up The Centre of NZ. Look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

since 1974. If I owned an insurance company I would think twice about any new cover for the first month of this rule, it will be hectic. I’m planning on using the bus for a few days and watching the spectacle from the safety of a bigger machine. I hope I’m wrong but the number of times I’ve seen drivers completely unaware of anyone else on the road leaves me with a decent amount of concern. Hopefully there are enough good drivers on the roads to allow for the craziness of others and they give them plenty of room. They’ll need it next month more than ever.

Surprise holiday leads to beach proposal This is the first in a series profiling the finalists of the Jens Hansen Love Stories competition with the Nelson Wedding Show. Readers will vote for the overall winner, announced at the Nelson Wedding Show on May 6. Peter and I have been together over 10 years and getting married was not on our agenda. So his proposal was a huge surprise and the most romantic I can think of. In late November 2010 Peter suggested that we go away for a few days, and that he would pack my bags - I love surprise trips! The next morning we went for ‘a drive’, first towards town, then to the airport! Two hours later, Peter checked us in at the interna-
tional terminal. At the X-Ray, the security officer asked for our destination, but I still had no idea. By the time we entered the plane I had a fair idea where we were heading. Most passengers were Pacific Islanders and it was announced that the flight to Samoa was slightly delayed! I was over the moon! We are not into luxury resorts, but there is one spot on the island that we discovered a few years ago called Virgin Cove, and it turned out that that was where we would be staying. A resort worker took us to our fale on the beach. It was dark, and had been raining, however Peter suggested going for a walk along the beach. Now that was unusual – it was nearly mid-
night! I couldn’t wait to get to our favourite spot, a little grove just a few minutes away, and we were relieved to see that the coconut palms were still alive (after the devastating tsunami) and the grove was still as magical as it was before! There and then it happened! Peter apologised that it was not a really starry night, turned around, took me in his arms and asked if I would marry him. Well, I’m sure I could see the stars all night and the next day. It was one of the happiest moments in my life! Five months later we had a dream wedding on Totaranui Beach. Oh, and although I’ve never worn a ring, THE ring (from Jens Hansen :-) makes up for all those years!! - Peter and Ingrid.
Nelmac still rules the rope The Tug o’ Peace title remains in the rough and tough hands of the Nelmac team, comfortably winning its third straight title at Sundial Square in Richmond on Saturday. Nelmac, led at the front by Jimmy Key and Aaron Russ, was far too much for the rest of the competition at the annual Hospice fundraiser. Usually held on Trafalgar St, the competition made its way to Richmond for the first time. Organiser Phil Wright says it was a little disappointing some teams couldn’t make it on Saturday. “But everyone who came along had a fantastic time. The highlight for me was seeing the women’s team of 10 out-muscling the Nelmac guys – it took six of the guys to overcome them.”

Trash to treasure Andrew Board
A Nelson “treasure collector” has stumbled across a rare 1891 original illustrated book, the latest in a long line of valuable finds. Emile Grey, of Stoke, has been visiting recycling centres and op-shops all over the region for the past 15 years, collecting books and artwork, many of which he then re-sells at a substantial profit. “A lot of the books I buy are fifty cents. I then sell them on to dealers or on TradeMe for around fifty dollars,” he says. “You can make a good profit if you buy the right books.” But the latest find is his favourite. It is a carefully printed edition of a book called Recollections of Venice, a collection of poems about the Italian city. The book is illustrated by Charles Robertson. He has already been offered $100 for the book but thinks it could be
worth more. He has been researching it for the past few weeks and says the signed illustrations by the artist and the lithography used makes it a rare find. “Not bad for a book worth fifty cents a few weeks ago,” he says. Emile says he got hooked on trying to find rare books after he followed his wife to op-shops. “My wife got me into it, she would go to op-shops and while she was looking at jewellery and other things I’d look around. I started looking for books and trying to find books that I thought were unique.” He says it’s taken him 15 years to really get the hang of picking the right books but he still “never really knows” until he researches it on the internet when he gets home with the book. “I love it, I’ve read a lot of the books I’ve bought and kept a lot of them as well. Some books I just don’t want to sell, they are too special.”

Hearty challenge for riders When the New Zealand Heart Foundation called for people to help raise funds in their national annual appeal week, Nelson businesses were in a spin to get involved. A six hour spin-cycle challenge was set up on Friday at Migym where seven local businesses pledged to have at least one staff member on a stationary spin-cycle for the full six hours. Organiser Averil West says the response from
businesses was “really positive” raising more than $1000 to add to the street appeal held the same day. The minimum requirement was to have one pair of legs pumping per business at any given time but more often than not you would find two. “Everyone was well aware that we had a fine in place if a bike was left empty, it was $1 fine for every minute there was no person riding,” laughed Averil.

It’s (not yet) a man’s world Nelson kindergarten teacher Roger Wilde never dreamt he’d be working with pre-schoolers for a career, but can now call it his dream job. Roger is a rare breed, a man in a women-dominated sector. But Roger says he would welcome more male colleagues and the Nelson Tasman Kindergarten Association is hoping to make kindergartens more “bloke friendly” to encourage more men in to the industry. Nelson Tasman Kindergartens CEO Wendy Logan says a lack of men in pre-school teaching roles is a serious issue, especially as research shows that children learn the most from good role models. “Positive male role models in the lives of young children, boys in particular, are essential for the development of ongoing social competency and a sense of collective identity,” she says. “We are making a concerted effort to attract males to the early childhood sector.” She says this includes making all kindergartens ‘bloke friendly’ through dad and daughter nights, bloke only groups, and by encouraging dads with food and coffee.
Roger, who works at Auckland Point Kindergarten, has been in the role for only six months after he was made redundant by his former employer. “I was a personal chef and when that finished I knew I didn’t want to go back to working in a restaurant as I had a young family so I started to think about something else.” Roger finished his one year of training and now says he loves his new career. “Because I have young children myself, I got really interested in their education and how they develop and grow, that’s what first got me interested. Now I really enjoy it and enjoy being a positive male role model for these children.” Dr Bradley Hannigan has been in the role of Senior Education Advisor for six months and believes it is important men know that entering the early childhood profession is a viable career path. “The sector has spent decades shedding the image of early childhood teachers as ‘baby sitters’,” he says. “We are a highly technical, research driven profession that stands tall alongside the professionalism of other sectors.”
Auckland Point Kindergarten teacher Roger Wilde says his new career is rewarding and challenging and he would like to see more men in the sector. Photo: Andrew Board.

Competent and compassionate care, always Nelson Hospice provides a range of holistic services and programmes to meet the physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural needs of terminally ill patients and their families. As an organisation, it believes that all people in the Nelson Tasman community should have access to high quality compassionate palliative care, without prejudice. Its services are available to anyone on their final journey including babies, children and young adults - and extend beyond the actual Hospice itself. Services are provided 24 hours a day, seven-days-a-week, throughout the region, including the Rai Valley and Murchison, either at the hospice or in the patient’s own home. Hospice staff assist patients to make the most of the life that remains and make sure that their final journey is as positive and as comfortable as it can possibly be. They are also there to provide support and care for family and close friends during the patient’s illness and in bereavement. The Hospice team is headed by an oncologist and

includes a dedicated clinical team who deliver competent and compassionate care. Their work is supported by a chaplain, counsellor, social worker, administration, volunteer and bereavement support co-ordinators, a five member Board of Trustees, CEO and more than 300 volunteers. The generosity of the Nelson public is key to the functioning of the Hospice. It can only provide its services thanks to donations from individuals, businesses and organisations, and a large and dedicated network of volunteers who support patients and clinical staff, organise fundraising events, help in the Hospice’s charity stores, and act as ambassadors to raise the organisation’s profile. Nelson Hospice’s vision is to “care always” and with the continued support and generosity of the Nelson community,it will.
• Six container ships, one a general carrier, a large car carrier departing with processed logs, seventeen large fishing vessels, an anchor handler in for lay-up, and a vessel towed in for repairs all kept the port staff busy this week. • Port Nelson is upgrading its cameras and the quality is superb. Before you decide to do anything stupid within the port please take note that it won’t be long before all of the port is under surveillance. • This summer I believe we have been closer than ever to a fatality in our waters - but why? There is education galore available. The Harbour Master and staff are readily available for advice. Is it just because in our maritime frontier we believe we are bullet proof? Boats aground, capsized, swimmers in trouble in the currents, vessels caught out in the weather, boaties injured by travelling too fast, gear broken due to careless stowage- we have seen it all this summer. • When you are approaching another vessel and are going to pass within 50 metres of it you are obliged by law to slow down to 5 knots. That might make passing a bit more difficult, however the answer is to ensure you are greater than 50 metres away. That is one third of the width of the main channel, not some distance you could pass a can of coke in. Be considerate sailing or motoring, make your intentions obvious and pass well clear. If in doubt- don’t go out. Dave Duncan, Harbour Master/Marine Operations Manager.

Colouring comp adds to trolley derby fun Not that the Robertsons Trolley Derby needed it, but the iconic Nelson event has just got a lot more colourful. Redbox Architecture has introduced a colouring competition for kids in the lead up to the trolley derby down Collingwood St on March 17. The competition is split into two categories – five and under and six to 10 – and will give entrants the chance to win prizes on derby day. To get your hands on a colouring poster visit www.robertsonstrolleyderby.co.nz. Once it’s finished post it off to Nelson Trolley Club Inc, 51 Domett St, Nelson, or drop it off to Redbox Architecture on Nile St. The competition came about after Justin Fletcher from Redbox Architecture wanted to offer an additional way for children to COLOURING COMP: Gilbert Robertson, of Robertson Accountants, third from left, and Justin Fletcher of get involved with the derby from a design perspective, alongside Redbox Architecture get colouring ahead of the Redbox Colouring Competition for this year’s Robertsons the Redbox Trolley Design Challenge which will once again run Trolley Derby. Stall holders build up for expo Local boutique vineyard, Milcrest Estate, are looking forward to wowing the ladies at the upcoming Women’s Lifestyle Expo with a taste of their award winning wines. Since they began in 2006 the vineyard has gained a reputation for stunning wines and just last year Milcrest Estate’s 2010 Pinot Noir was awarded a gold medal at the NZ International Wine Show, the only Nelson Pinot Noir to win a Gold medal in the competition. Taking part in the Expo’s extended Taste Zone, owner Terry Milton will be sampling and selling their full range of boutique wines from site, including a Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a gorgeous Syrah. Terry explains why he enjoys being involved with the Women’s Lifestyle Expo. “We enjoy being an exhibitor at the shows, because they are well run, well patronised and we get to meet great people, both public and exhibitors. They are great for exposure of our product and for sales.” The Milcrest Estate vineyard is situated at the foot Nak Care Shampoo Duo Packs. It offers so much for the visitor and residents from outdoors recreational activities to great café’s, arts and crafts. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.” The Women’s Lifestyle Expo will be held at the Trafalgar Centre on the 14th & 15th April. Julia and Alan Caldwell with Nayland College principal Rex Smith, left, and the students and mentors of the new project to build and learn how to fly an aeroplane that will start this term. Photo: Andrew Board.
School project off to a flying start Andrew Board Building a toolbox at school was once considered pretty cool, so imagine how 12 Nayland College students will feel when they can say they’ve built an aeroplane at school. The students are the beneficiaries of some extreme generosity by a Nelson couple who have bought a kitset aeroplane for the students to build and then fly. Alan and Julia Caldwell saw a similar project in the United States and decided to bring the idea back to Nelson. Buying a kitset plane for around $65,000 and donating it to the project. Students will now build the plane with expert support and at
the end of the two year project, will then learn to fly it. The project has the support of Nayland College as well with principal Rex Smith promising to allow the students to work on the project during some school time. But a fair amount of work will also be required on Saturdays and after school says Alan. “They need to be dedicated and committed. This is a great opportunity for some of these kids to get into the aviation industry either as an engineer or pilot, but they will have to work hard for it.” Alan is a former helicopter pilot and aircraft engineer. He says he was sick of young people not learning in workshops because of health and safety laws, so felt this would
be a good opportunity to teach 12 students how to build something alongside expert engineers. The project has the support of KEA – Kiwi Education in Aviation – and Nelson Airport. Alan says he is hoping the airport will find space for the project and the community will come up with some supplies. “We need goggles, earmuffs, tools for the boys, those sorts of things. We are hoping someone will step forward and help us out.” The project is also looking for another few thousand dollars but the bulk of the money will come from the Caldwell’s donation for the aeroplane. Julia says the idea is for the project to continue long term. “After two years when the

plane is built and the boys have learnt to fly it, we will sell the plane and the profit will fund the next project. We want this to be a long-term project, not just a one-off.” The plane is a VAN RV-12 and is six metres long. It will have a range of 850 kilometres and has a top speed of 217 kilometres per hour. Rex says the project is exciting and while students will have to dedicate a lot of nonschool time towards it, it will be rewarding. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students and our school.” Work on the project will start as soon as a location is found for the plane to be built. In the meantime their first job will be to build themselves a metal toolbox.

Work on predator fence LETTERS TO THE EDITOR about to start Jonathan McKeown
for the 14km predator-proof fence that will create a 700ha native habitat for kiwi, kakapo, tuatara and weta among other unique and endangered species. The fence is designed specifically to keep New Zealand’s pests out with holes too small for baby mice, and an overhang to prevent climbing mammals. The fence even continues 1 metre into the ground to prevent infiltration by burrowing creatures. Hudson believes the completed sanctuary will perform another function for Nelson, attracting a green commodity of another kind – tourism dollars. “It’s also about tourism. We honestly believe this is going to be an economic engine for Nelson. This sanctuary has every chance of becoming one of, if not the biggest tourism draw in Nelson,” he says.
Hudson Dodd has only been the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary Trust’s general manager for seven weeks but overseeing the final stages of planning and the building phase of a 14 km pest-proof fence is already high on his list of “must do’s”. The sanctuary was swarming with locals at the annual Open Day on Sunday where close to 1400 people came to learn more about the community-based initiative working to create a pest-free wildlife sanctuary close to Nelson. Hudson, an American native, says the trust has plenty it is working towards. “First and foremost it is a conservation project. We are looking to preserve the endangered native species of New Zealand that are globally unique and precious to the world for future generations,” he says. Over 250 volunteers per year come to work at the sanctuary to build tracks into the bush, trap out the pest mammals and work on forest regeneration. Before the open day there were also 600 households registered as member-supporters, but Hudson thinks that number may have increased by a few dozen during the day. Hudson says “an island on the mainland” will be created five minutes’ drive Brook Waimarama Sanctuary staff David Kerr, Marina Willis, from the city centre once Hudson Dodd and Rick Field pose with art work created by Takaka the fence is built. I am amazed to see Local Government Minister Nick Smith signalling his intention to rein in on excessive rate rises and have future increases aligned with the rate of inflation – Yeah Right! The last Local Government Minister Rodney Hide tried to do just that but the National Government, of which Nick was a senior minister, totally opposed putting the screws on councils. Both Nelson and Tasman Councils can hang their heads in shame at the disgraceful rate in-

creases the ratepayers have had to absorb over the last 10 years. Lets see what Nick can do for the next 10. I also see our new minister expects councils to be more prudent with their spending and control debt. When I look at the schedule of payments for the Nelson City Council each month and see hundreds and thousands of dollars being spent on refreshments and entertainment, I can understand what he means. Best of luck Nick, I will be right behind you, to give you all the support I can, or to do otherwise if this is just fancy talk with no clout.

Speight’s Ale House is on the map again with a new location right here in Nelson. The newest Ale House in the well known brand opened at 99 Cadillac Way in Annesbrook (next to Mitre 10 Mega) on December 14 last year. While keeping aspects of the rugged, “blokes’ bar” vibe that is prevalent in the Speight’s Ale Houses established all over the country, there has been an effort to create a place where women and families also feel welcome. The softer feel provides a more inviting atmosphere, and the comfortable seating and booths provide a great place to share drinks and nibbles or enjoy a meal with friends. The restaurant has an open, flowing design over the split level ground floor and up to the upper level, while still creating separate, private areas for groups to share a conversation. The booths, padded benches, bar tables and restaurant seating provides plenty of variety to cater to any occasion. The spacious restaurant and bar means that even if the Ale House reaches its capacity of over 250, it doesn’t feel crowded or noisy. The Ale House was purpose built from the ground up throughout 2011. The building boasts several areas, including the main floor of the restaurant, a split-level area with padded benches and a fireplace, a large upstairs dining and function room, as well as a large sun-drenched outdoor courtyard. This courtyard features louvres which can be set to ei-
ther allow or block the sunlight at your request. The outdoor seating is just as comfortable as inside, with booths, tables and benches, as well as another open fire and heaters that will keep the courtyard at a welcoming temperature even in winter. You can order food and drinks at the bar or take advantage of the table service to get the next round so you can keep chatting with your mates. Upstairs has a seated capacity of over 50, making it perfect for functions, events or corporate meetings. A 50 inch screen allows the use of video and power point displays, which can be utilised for a photo slideshow at a birthday or reunion, or to display data at a business meeting to employees or clients. Currently the area is used every Thursday morning by The BNI Group (Business Network International) for a breakfast meeting. If you have an upcoming event, contact the staff to book or reserve an area. Whether you’d like to book out the upper floor for your event or would just like to reserve your favourite table for drinks with friends, they’ll take care of you. Speight’s Ale House Nelson is locally owned and operated by Gareth Caldwell, who has been in the hospitality industry both here and overseas, along with John Caldwell who has a history of hospitality dating back many years. Gareth has taken on 28 staff members, including a skilled team of Chefs led by Aaron McCorkindale. The extensive menu

Bridget Budget answers your questions
Q: I joined a new power company because they convinced me my power bill would be lower. I waited for the first account but never got one for 3 months. Now I owe them a lot of money and they want me to pay it within 8 weeks, or disconnect my power. I can’t. What should I do? A: First, talk to your power company about an arrangement to pay the arrears. If they are non-negotiable, and you are unable to pay before the due date, you could consider changing your power provider to avoid disconnection. Then pay off this debt over a longer period. Some tips about power accounts: Ensure you put aside money from the day you sign up. If you don’t receive an account after the first month, phone the company, let them know your meter reading and ask for an account to be sent. Organise with the power company to have a regular realistic payment option, so you still get the discount and no big bill surprises. WINZ may consider a special arrangement where power payments are paid out of a client’s benefit before it is paid into their bank. If you need help sorting out and paying your bills, come and see us. Nelson club wins historic tennis cup The Nelson Lawns Tennis Club has regained the country’s oldest inter-club tennis trophy, beating the Marlborough Tennis Club on Sunday. The Bennett Cup has been played for every year since 1929 and Nelson took a huge advantage winning the first leg in Marlborough 26-22 at the end of last year. On Sun-
day the team of 12 men and 12 ladies won the second leg in Nelson 32-15 to take the tie and bring the cup back to the Nelson Lawns Club for the first time since 2009. Club pro Andre van Rooyen easily won his game and says the competition is a great thing for the club and brought out plenty of excitement.
“It was a good win for us. It is a special cup and it is great that it involves a range of club players.” The Nelson team was; Cara Bannister, Robyn Sheves, Sue Rooney, Lynn Broughton, Alice Andersen, Bree Ferrick, Clare Homes, Anna Metzenberger, Debbie AdeSimpson, Debbie Knapp, Becky Flood,
Nicola Kidson, Paul Muncaster, Allan Innes Walker, Andre van Rooyen, Gerhard Engelbrecht, Steve Molnar, Stirling Cathman, Shalto Duncan, Matt Duncan, Callum Duncan, Adrian Secker, Brook Freeman and Jim Muncaster. Nelson Lawns president Alan Innes-Walker says the win was jubilantly celebrated.
Thumbs up for league festival
New Zealand Rugby League legend Ruben Wiki brought a special guest along to the Community Roots Carnival at Auckland Point School on Sunday, a close friend Ruben likes to call T. Rophy. The Rugby League World Cup was on show at the free League community event for children aged 5 to 12 years. But unlike the plane ride home after winning the Cup in Australia in 2008, Ruben didn’t book T. Rophy a seat on their flight to Nelson. The most-capped Rugby League international of all time says he is impressed with the resurgence and growth of the code in the NelsonTasman region. “It’s good coming down to Nelson because I was talking to one of the parents who said back
in the 80’s League was strong down here and its getting stronger again so it’s good to see all the kids down here to continue the cycle.” He credits the growth around New Zealand and especially provincial centres to success on the international stage. “It’s just the belief mate, belief that we can match it with the big boys and we got the silverware which we still hold dearly,” says Ruben. Switching roles from trainer to defence coach for the Warriors is another jump in the coaching ranks for the NRL Premiership winner but he still finds time for the grassroots and genuinely enjoys the Roots Camp. “I love passing on the knowledge to these little ones and seeing them have fun. It’s what it’s about,” he says.

Members of Kartsport Nelson gather for a minutes silence to remember the clubs most famous son. Jason Richards died in December last year of cancer and his mates at the Nelson karting club drove their first meet of the year in honour of him. Once the racing got going the action proved pretty hot with Andy Stratford winning the open class. Duncan Barrett won the Rotax Max Heavy, Brendon Gridley the Rotax Max Light, Clarke McFadzien the junior Yamaha, Lewis Ball the junior restricted and Josh Bradley the cadet class. The club is hosting a Have a Go Day this Sunday, February 26. Anyone interested in having a go at karting should contact Kartsport Nelson; info@kartsportnelson.co.nz. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Nelson College for Girls and Nelson College will both contest the zone 5 secondary school touch rugby regional finals in Christchurch later next month, only needing to turn up to qualify. While most of the drama was being forced in the senior mixed grade, at the Tasman Secondary School Touch Competition held at the Tahunanui Playing Fields on Sunday, only two teams in both senior boys and girls entered the single sex grades meaning they had already booked a date at Sheldon Park for March 24-25 even before any game was played. Both teams still took to the field, fending off efforts from Marlborough schools to qualify top. Nelson College for Girls were far too good for Marlborough Girls' College, collecting six unanswered tries, including a full field effort to Rebecca Kersten. Nelson College had a tougher time in its match, before taking the result 4-3 at full-time against Marlborough Boys’ College. Nayland College was left to rue a come-frombehind loss against Waimea College in the senior mixed grade. Nayland was leading in the second half before eventually trailing 6-4 at the hooter. A surprise 4-3 victory over Motueka High School and a 7-3 win over Queen Charlotte College meant their hopes relied on Waimea College seeing off Motueka in the final round robin match, which they failed to do. With three teams tied on seven points, Nayland was the team to drop out on score differential, meaning eventual winners Motueka and Waimea will head down south as the two mixed teams from Nelson. Nelson College won the junior boys' grade and Garin College won the junior girls' grade.

Nelson retains cup

Athletics Nelson has continued its stranglehold on the Mahar Cup, cruising to a near 200 point victory at Athletic Park in Blenheim on Saturday. The Mahar Cup has been in competition for 76 years and is contested between Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast. Nelson finished with 355 points, Marlborough 161 and West Coast 104. In some of the highlights; Dale Pritchard threw 14.43 to set a new meet record in the senior men’s shot put. He also won the discus. Bishopdale’s Brendon Barnett took out the senior men’s long jump with a distance of 7.20m. Brodie Hewlett eased to the 100m/200m/400m triple with his first two disciplines clocking in at times of 10.8 seconds and 22.8 seconds. Claire Erasmus claimed the trifector in the senior women’s grade. Jess Martin won the senior women’s 800m and 1500m. Chris Brake won the senior men’s high jump with a new personal best of 1.96m.
Blokes told to sign up for fun triathlon Nelson Events are challenging guys to get off the couch and enter the Port Nelson Blokes Day Out mens triathlon on Sunday March 25. Rather than heading to the beer fridge their call is for them to find a pair of running shoes capable of walking 3km or running 5km, de-rusting their bike
and pumping up the tyres to ride 14km, and finding their speedos to swim four lengths of Riverside Pool. Those who can’t swim, and there are plenty, can use floaties or a rubber ring, or simply hang onto the lane ropes when they near the deep end. No lycra needed, just some man courage to “have a go”
And post-event rather than head back to the couch for an afternoon nap they can relax at the Botanics and take time out celebrating becoming an triathlete and watching their children take part in the Port Nelson Kauri Kids Duathlon. Full details and entry form online www. nelsonevents.co.nz

All Black coach Steve Hansen speaking to young Nelson rugby players at Tasman Rugby Union headquarters last Friday. Photo: Andrew Board.
AB coach gives pep talk All Black coach Steve Hansen gave the region's young rugby stars a pep talk last Friday, ahead of a fundraising dinner for the Nelson College 1st XV. Steve, who was appointed to the role of head coach of the world champion All Blacks late last year, told the young players that dedication, hard work and a balance of life outside rugby was needed to go along with their athletic talent. He told Nelson Weekly that the young players needed to work hard if they wanted to be an All Black.
"Building a career is very much like running a 100 metre race. You've got to run the whole 100 metres. You've got to build your core skills and there are no short cuts. Rugby is in great health in this country and we have some exciting young talent, like the boys here today, coming through." Steve then spoke at a fundraising dinner, which raised $25,000 for the Press Cup team. Local businessman Shane Drummond arranged for Steve to speak at the dinner. He says the fundraiser went very well and he was thrilled with the turnout of local supporters.
Top young Nelson hockey players Jared Jones, left, and Scott Kearney are getting set to play for the Wellington under 21 team. Photo: Phillip Rollo.
Hockey's young guns Two of the region’s top hockey players are heading back to the capital for another crack at national glory. Jared Jones and Scott Kearney, both of Tasman Hockey Club, have successfully trialled for the Capital under-21 team ahead of the national under-21 tournament in Hamilton on May 7-12, and hope to gain selection in the senior men’s side ahead of the National Hockey League soon after. The under-21 competition features teams from the top eight regions in the country. Once the tournament is over, they will stay in Wellington and trial for the senior side. Jared says the hockey in Wellington is on a completely different level. “Hockey in Nelson is a bit casual. When you’re up in Wellington you have 6:30am trainings. You’re playing with guys you will pass where you want it to go or trap it where you want it to be.”
A new high performance centre has also been built in Wellington. Both Jared and Scott have played for Southern in the National Hockey League before Jared spent a year with Capital last year. Scott, a former Nelson College first XI defender, didn’t play for Capital last year because he was coaching and playing in Marlborough, England. He enjoyed the experience of coaching in a private boarding school where hockey was one of the top sports, but says the time away made him miss out on further New Zealand selection. Jared, who plays up front in a striker role, went on a tour of Malaysia with the Junior Black Sticks last year. Scott and Jared both have goals of being selected for the New Zealand under-21 side. “Even though we’re both sort of there now, we really need to break in further.” Jared moved to Wellington on Monday and Scott
