Road funding still unused Half of the city’s regional road fund is still up for grabs, with more than $10 million in the kitty waiting to be spent. While the majority of Nelson’s R funding, or road funding, has been earmarked, half of the $22.9m it was allocated is up for review, meaning other projects not already being considered can still get a look in. Nelson was allocated $22.9m in R funding by the government, from a funding pool

made up of fuel excise duty and road user charges. Despite initially struggling to find projects to spend it on Nelson City Council has since tagged the majority of the money for spending on the Walk/Cycle/ School package, major roading projects, road widening, footpath creation and a possible $5.7 million on Rocks Rd. With money already spent on the Waimea Rd and Motueka St intersection, improve-

reporter@nelsonweekly.co.nz ments to the Maitai Walkway and the Brook area and more work scheduled for the Ridgeway intersection, Works and Infrastructure committee chair and councillor Eric Davy says R funding is being put

to good use but there is still a capacity to review it. “We still have 50 percent of the R funding available to be reviewed and reconsidered. But we want to know if those projects are still the main priority for this council or can we look at something that is of higher benefit for the area?”

Richmond rodeo wows big crowd

It’s an event unlike any other on the local event calendar and it didn’t disappoint, with dozens of cowboys making the journey to Richmond Park only for most of them to make another quick trip to the arena’s dirt floor. Hundreds attended the rodeo says organiser Tina Angus Phyn, making it a massive day. “We were absolutely thrilled with the gate takings and we need that to pay the bills, so we’re rapt.” She says the crowd really got into the event, especially when the action heated up. The support from competitors was just as strong. “The cowboys have come back to us saying ‘this is awesome, this is the best rodeo, thank you guys’. So the feedback is great.” In the competition Patrick McCarthy won the rope and tie, and he teamed up with Kate Haugh to win the team roping comp. Ross Dowling won the bareback, Wade Marshall won the saddle bronc and Henrietta Purvis won the barrel race and Jimmy Booth won the bull ride. For more photos visit www.shuttersport.co.nz.

Nelson’s annual kite festival returned to a big crowd on Sunday. Now in its 23rd year, the Nelson Summer Kite Festival welcomed some of the best kite enthusiasts from all over the country, whose kites took to the sky in celebration of the longest running kite festival in New Zealand. A giant sun, an octopus, a koi fish, seahorse and a whale were just some of the kites seen soaring above Neale Park, whilst locals tried their hand at flying their own kites on the sidelines. Event coordinator Gretchen Howard says they couldn’t have asked for a better day. “We were crossing our fingers, hoping for a forecast to deliver a nice day and sea breezes and that’s exactly what we got.”

Unused road funding Eric says R funding is being used for projects that may not have been funded any other way and it’s been a bonus to have the ability to use the money for those. “But I’d like to put it out there and say here is an opportunity, I’m saying that fifty percent of the R funding can be reviewed and therefore, what does the community want to see us do with that money? Does the community itself have any projects they would like to see developed that we can spend that money on?” Among those projects up for review would be the millions of dollars earmarked for a cycleway and walkway on Rocks Rd, that will only get the go ahead if a feasibility report comes back positively says mayor Rachel Reese. “There is quite a lot to work through in the feasibility study before we will know if a shared pathway can be delivered that meets the recreational needs and respects this important coast-

line. “Rocks Rd has important recreational and heritage values. It is also an attractive route that has significant amenity value to tourists and residents. Any update will need to improve the attractiveness of this city to sea link. “What we do need to be realistic about is that a design solution, one that respects the values in this area, may cost considerably more than $5.7m.” She says R funding could also be used for the Southern Arterial project if it met the funding criteria specified by NZTA and that she’d like to discuss reviewing the criteria later this year given population increases and continued pressure on Rocks Rd. “However, other sources of central government funding should also be pursued. I believe we are short changed as a region. We receive no government funding for rail and no funding for public transport.” The deadline to have R funding committed is 2018.

Nelson has ‘unfinished business’, says CEO crUiSE Ship To viSiT: On Tuesday February 4, the luxury cruise ship MV Seabourn Sojourn will berth in Nelson for the day. This is the first cruise ship to visit Port Nelson in 2014, and the first of six to visit the region this year, with seven booked in total for the 2014/2015 cruise ship season. The ship will carry 450 passengers, mainly from the US and UK with at least 300 of those expected to wander into Nelson. EDUcATion grAnT: Following the success of its inaugural education grant, Soroptimist International of Waimea has increased the funding of its 2014 grant to $2500. Applications close on February 13. The inaugural winner, Sarah Baldwin, graduated from NMIT in December. To apply email siwaimea@ siswp.org or post to PO Box 2475, Nelson, 7041. SpEnDing STrong AgAin: This weekend the Nelson District Kennel Assn Championship Dog Shows will be held with 400 pedigree dogs entered and 100 different breeds, held over two days. There will be seven groups being judged - toys, terriers, gundogs, hounds, working, utility and non sporting. The show will be held this Saturday and Sunday at Richmond Park.

A year into her role as the council’s chief executive, Clare Hadley says it’s time Nelson tackled some unfinished business. Clare endured a tough first year in the job, with a change of mayor, the Farmers building mess and some staff rumblings about job cuts. But she insists Nelson is in a better place than it was a year ago and she’s looking forward to a more settled 2014 and agrees with the new council that it needs to start finishing projects it’s started. She says Saxton Field, the issue of a performing arts venue, the heart of Nelson plan and the marina are all areas that need attention and the city needs to start finishing them. “I certainly hear from elected members and the community that completing a project is a challenge in Nelson. I think there is a great opportunity now to actually do some of the finishing of those projects and in turn get a better return on the investment we’ve already made.” Clare says her job is to carry out the wishes of councillors and provide them with the correct information they need to make decisions. She says

Nelson City Council CEO Clare Hadley with her husband Ken and their dog. The three have lunch together nearly every day. Photo: Andrew Board. the job is hugely rewarding but does believe the council had strayed somewhat. “When I started the job I did a review of the resource management work done, the catalyst report, and I was really heartened by how staff and elected members supported the bulk of the findings in that report. I was surprised at where we were as opposed to where we needed to be. I think we set off down a path without necessarily checking back in

and checking we were in the right area. And as a unitary authority I think you have to work really hard to keep yourself honest and that you’re dealing with all your responsibilities.” She says her first year was tough with a change in the organisational structure and an election but she insists that’s part of the reason she loves it. “There have been some challenging issues in the sense that these are issues that we

have to confront and have to deal with. You do expect challenges because sometimes you are proposing change, which can be hard, but it is also what keeps it dynamic and interesting.” She says her relationship with mayor Rachel Reese is solid. “I’ve been through elections before and I’ve always understood and the staff have got it, that there is very much a ‘the king is dead, long live the king, or in this case, the queen’. “We’re both from Dunedin, went to the same school and my married name is even her maiden name. It’s no rumour, it’s true. Someone said to me ‘how did this happen? We had two Marshall’s and now we have two Hadley’s”. Clare says the council is well placed financially and she’s looking forward to helping the council realise its goals for the city. She says the timing proposal for amalgamation with Tasman is unfortunate, because it is so soon after it was voted down and Nelson needs to get on with its business and not be “consumed” by the amalgamation debate. “We live in a great place, a great city and my job is to help make it even better.”

Locals support whale effort Volunteers refloat a pilot whale in Golden Bay. Photo: Project Jonah.

Dozens of Nelsonians have driven over to Golden Bay to help refloat scores of beached whales. Yesterday the Department of Conservation attempted to refloat 47 pilot whales which were stranded on Farewell Spit. DOC rangers and volunteers from Project Jonah have already spend the better part of a two weeks refloating whales,

with more than 70 either dying or being put down due to their poor condition. DOC’s John Mason says the project to refloat the whales has been frustrating but positive that there has been so much support. “Whale standings do need a lot of people and there’s no way that DOC could do that sort of work with the staff we’ve got. We really do rely on Project

Jonah and the volunteers, most of whom have come from Nelson.” More than 100 volunteers were at the beach on Sunday to help refloat whales and John says despite the mixed results, the mood is positive. “There’s always a good feeling at a whale stranding, everyone is feeling positive and they’re there because they want to be there.”

Donor gifts 50 Christmas dinners to women’s refuge The amount of food donated was also enough to re-stock its depleted food shelf at its headquarters on Trafalgar St as well. Fundraising and marketing manager for the refuge, Reni Gargiulo, says the anonymous donor gave food in 2012 as well but wanted to up his gift and the meals included chicken or ham, vegetables, sauces and desserts, all prepared and just in the need of being cooked and served. She says the refuge was hugely appreciative of everyone who donated. “It’s so nice to be able to go to these homes and really make Christmas special for them. The response was fantastic and we’ve been able to use the food for our safe house as well.”

An anonymous donor had his own personal chefs design 50 Christmas dinners for Nelson women’s refuge to hand out to deserving families in the region, the biggest example of kindness that the refuge says was bigger than usual in 2013. The Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge gave Christmas meals and presents to 70 local families that have used their service and they say the amount and quality of food and presents bought tears of joy and happiness to the families. “Several of the churches gave us boxes of really good food, treat food that kids would love and it was really nice to see the generosity.”

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: I have got so many bills in the

mail this week. I didn’t think I had spent that much over the holidays. It’s really stressful! How am I going to be able to pay everything? A: There are a few steps that you can take to regain a sense of control over your money, reduce your stress and reduce your debt.  Know where your money is going each week and

reduce your spending in order to address your debt. Sorted.org.nz has an excellent ‘money-planner’ tool to help you work this out.  Sort your bills into an order of priority. Bills for essential things like rent and power should be paid first; high interest debts are the next priority; low interest or interest free debts such as those you might have with family are less of a priority.  Ask for help from family or friends. Look for ways to increase your income. Sell assets to free up some cash. Call your creditors and make repayment arrangements. Creditors are much more likely to be flexible if you talk to them instead of just stopping payments. If you do not have enough money to go around all your creditors, talk to a Budget Advisor. They may be able to help you come up with a solution.

Getting ready for the Crusaders He says it with a lot of passion but the mission appears simple for George Sturgeon: "We're turning a little wee old bare ground with one grandstand into a stadium." George, the chairman of Good Sports Motueka, was leading a team of 30 volunteers on Sunday who have been tasked with getting Sports Park Motueka up to standard to host the Crusaders and the Highlanders for a pre-season Super Rugby game on February 7 at 5:30pm. A few weeks ago the rugby ground looked better than your average club field but certainly nothing like AMI Stadium in Christchurch. Looking ahead, it will be the become the brief home battlefield for international rugby stars like Richie McCaw, Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock, Israel Dagg and Motueka's own Owen Franks, with an expected 10,000 rugby fans walking through the gates ahead of the biggest game to be played in the town since the Crusaders

into a luscious rugby paddock. This year, in typical Nelson fashion the pre-purchasing of tickets has been "slow", but George is encouraging people to snap them up early to avoid missing out. "That's Nelson, they never buy anything until last minute. Our message is you need to go out and get them. We're going to have a beautiful day, drink some beer and watch some rugby." In 2008, 8000 people showed up to watch the Crusaders take on the Hurricanes, with 10,000 people in attendance two years later when the Blues came to town. But when asked of the actual capacity of Sports Park Motueka, George says "there's no limit". "If we can get 15,000 I'll just jam them in. Our seat capacity is about 5500 but standing there's no limit, well maybe 12,000." To purchase tickets for the Friday evening match, and for further details, visit www.makos.co.nz.

last made the trip in 2010. "This is going to take us three Sundays of five hours and that's just getting this grandstand up. The rest will take an extra day or two," explains the man whose dream is to see the Crusaders play a regular season game in Motueka before he dies. "She'll be huge, we just need to sell more tickets." Nelson Bays outbid Marlborough to score the summer clash and George, a former Nelson Bays coach, says the hosting rights are huge for Motueka who will use "a fee" from the game to help develop Sports Park Motueka. George has many success stories from the last visits the Crusaders had. In 2008 the Robbie Deans-coached Crusaders took on the Hurricanes. He says when Robbie first visited the ground it looked like the Sahara Desert, but the moment the team walked off the bus the most successful coach in Super Rugby history was quick to shake George's hand and thank him for the effort put in to turn it

People needed to give advice Nelson’s one-stop advice shop is after more volunteers to help people with problems from travel directions to holiday pay entitlement to relationship problems. Citizens Advice Bureau helps people who need some advice and its spokesperson Heather Thomas says it’s a rewarding role. Volunteers often say they love their work because every shift is different, and they’re always learning new things. One moment they’re finding the contact for the local scrabble or motorcycle club,

then the next enquiry might be about holiday pay entitlement, or a relationship issue.” CAB is running a training course for new volunteers at the end of February and they are after new people to come along and see if it’s a role that interests them. The programme includes communication skills, an overview of common laws, and how to research using various computerised databases and manuals. Heather says volunteers are often relieved to discover they’re not expected

with Sinead Ogilvie

to know everything. They only have to remember where to find relevant information. Because laws change, they look things up every time. Sometimes finding answers takes a bit of creative thinking, but because two workers share each shift, they can discuss different ideas. Some lesser known CAB services include reading and explaining complicated documents, helping draft letters to clearly summarise issues, and assisting to fill in forms. For more information call 548 2117 or email cab.nelson@xtra.co.nz.

Tuesday January 14 The winner of a double pass to the Classic Hits Winery Tour at Neudorf Vineyards on the Thursday 27 February is Nelson Weekly reader Julie McIntosh. The event is headlined by the Exponents and Stan Walker. Tuesday January 7 Art Group Nelson’s summer exhibition held at Queens gardens two weekends ago was an “absolute success” according to group member Jean Jackson. The group decided to extend the hours of the exhibition and only hold it over one day and were very pleased to have sold many works and take in more funds than last summer’s event.

A good feed for a good cause When George Paki Paki started using stainless steel bins lined with soil and manuka chips to recreate the hangi experience he knew he was onto a winner. The fragrant, taste, texture – everything was the same. Except of course, the hours spent digging holes, chopping wood and heating up stones. The Wanderers Rugby Club life member is putting on a hangi this Saturday to help fundraise for Rainui House in Christchurch and he’s encouraging members of the public to come down for a good feed for a good cause. Able to cater for around 150 people, the hangi will be held at the Wanderers Clubrooms in Brightwater. There is a long list

of meats, including wild pork, mutton, ham, chicken and venison, while Mark O’Connor has donated fresh vegetables for the dinner. The club bar will also be open for people to purchase drinks. People are welcome to arrive from 5pm, or earlier if they wish to watch the club cricket fixture between Wanderers and Waimea Toi Toi United. The actual dinner will be commencing at 6pm. The price is $10 per person with all of the funds going towards Ranui House – an accommodation block where caregivers of sick patients can stay for free while their loved ones recover at Christchurch Hospital. To buy tickets for the hangi, phone Peter on 544 0304.

Tuesday January 7 The Nelson Antique Bottle & Collectables Club held a very succesful Antique and Collectables show. They had more than 500 people through the doors and well over 50 collectors and antique dealers displaying their collections. The free valuation service was also very popular. Tuesday November 5 Nayland College student Mitchell Chandler, who was selected to be a part of the Young Blake Expeditions trip to the Auckland Islands in February had a successful fundraising night last week. He held an environmentally themed film night showing award winning documentary, Trashed and managed to raise $650 to go towards the trip.

John Simpson’s first taste of the Manchester Unity Friendly Society was as a 5 year old when his father signed him up to its youth lodge – almost six decades later he’s on course to head the whole organisation as its grand master. John has been involved in the society in Nelson since that first night in 1957 and late last year was voted in as the society’s deputy grand master, a two year term that custom dictates is directly followed by a stint in the top job. The lodge is active in Nelson with 900 members in the top of the south, including Blenheim and Tasman, but John admits most of those members are involved for the insurance benefits that come with membership. A lodge meeting usually attracts several dozen members and social evenings can see that number double. The society was founded in the United Kingdom in 1810, before government social welfare. Members contributed financially to the society, which

It has evolved over time and now is most useful for health insurance, life insurance, funeral insurance and other benefits that are cheaper due to the number of members pooling their buying power.

The Nelson lodge is the oldest in New Zealand, established in 1842. John says there are 15,000 members nation-wide and he will be the fifth Nelsonian to be elected to the position. “It is an honour, it’s something that you dream of and not many reach it,” he says. “I’ve been going to conferences throughout New Zealand for many, many years and I’ve put my hand up a couple of times. I had the opportunity two years ago to take the deputy position but I had a triple bypass so the timing wasn’t right. This time I’m fit and well so I put my hand up and was voted in.” The Nelson lodge put on a high tea for John last week to congratulate him on the appointment and will get the chance to see him take the top job here in Nelson. The national conference in 2015 will be held in Nelson, the conference that will see John installed as the grand master. “That will be something really special,” he says.

Paraglider ready for national champs Woman drowns at Rabbit Island A body discovered floating in the water at Rabbit Island was the first drowning in Nelson since 2011. Adelheid Wilma Stock, 71, of Nelson, drowned while swimming at Rabbit Island. Emergency services were alerted to the incident at about 5pm when she had been pulled unconscious by a member of the public. Police say she had been swimming with a friend at the time, although it is believed she was found alone, according to St John. “At first look this would be a presumed drowning but no one can say whether she’s had some sort of medical event while being in the water,” says shift manager Kris Gagliardi. “What we gather is she was swimming with a friend at the time but she wasn’t with the friend when she was found.” Kris praised the member of the public that pulled the woman out of the water and performed CPR until a “multitude” of off-duty health care professionals took over, including a nurse, practitioner and paramedic who all happened to be on the beach at the time. Police, Ambulance, Volunteer Fire Fighters and the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter responded shortly after, and although there was a “lengthy” resuscitation, the woman died at the scene. It is unknown how long the woman had been in the water for until she was discovered. “We think she had been seen by her friend around 20 minutes prior but that was just an estimation, the exact time is unknown.” The matter has been referred to the Coroner.

It was a birthday present from his wife that started Nick Taber’s obsession with paragliding. He says she’s regretted ever since. “She never sees me”. Nick, who will compete at the New Zealand National Paragliding Championship in Nelson this weekend, recalls words like “purity” when describing the feeling of gliding through the sky harnessed below a parachute. “Unlike parachuting where you get an immediate adrenalin hit and you’re done, what excited me about this was the purity of the flying with no engine, no noise, you’re just gliding like a bird,” the 48 year old says. “Man’s dreamt of flying since the year dot and this is the closest you get to be a bird. We’re so privileged to live in a time where we can do this.” Nick’s first flight, the lesson for his birthday, occurred on a Spring October day eight years ago. Just two months later he had passed his license with 40 flights under strict supervision under his belt and hasn’t looked back. He even calculates the time he’s spent in the air to be close to 600 hours. “The terrain you travel over is just amazing. I feel like a rock climber that is cheating because we don’t have to do the hard work to get to the top of the mountain, we just fly over them and we get to see lots of them. I live for those days when I get to see the snowy peaks.” Some of Nick’s longest flights have lastest between six and seven hours at a time, and the most significant of those were three milestone 100km journeys from Inward’s Lookout near Wakefield all the way to Hamner Springs. Nick says his

Atawhai man Nick Taber will be competing at this weekend’s New Zealand National Paragliding Championship. Photo: Phillip Rollo. second effort was more special because he had fallen short of the township in the previous trip despite still making the 100km mark. He became just the second pilot in New Zealand to crack 300km in one season last year. “When I did finally crack it I was going over the ski field and Hamner Springs came into sight and I just couldn’t get enough height. I was thinking ‘come on, come on’, I could see it but I couldn’t get to it. It was so tantalizingly close, but then I just got

enough height and I literally just got over the mountain, landing by the river bed,” he says. “It had been my goal for seven years to fly to Hamner and it was an amazing feeling.” Nick is certainly aware of the risks involved in paragliding, his most serious accident is still very fresh in his mind. “I broke both wrists and I’ve got plates in them now. I’ve had a big collapse in some very rough air. I was too close to the terrain and it turned me into the terrain. I fell through the trees. I put my arms out to grab something and I smacked them through the trees on the way down. It was just six months ago.” But it’s the rewards he gets when flying that keep his passion alive, and this week his attention will turn to the New Zealand National Paragliding Championship. The national competition format is like “orienteering in the sky”, according to Nick. Each pilot carries a sophisticated GPS with them and has to hit certain points in the sky. Around 60-70 pilots will take part in the competition, including an 11-strong contingent from Venezuela. Flying will commence on Saturday and goes until February 1. The courses are situated in most areas of the region including Nelson, Stoke, Richmond, Wakefield and even Takaka, St Arnaud, Murchison, and Havelock too. Nelson Control Tower have allowed the pilots to fly at 3500ft during the competition, and Nick says the club was thankful for their support along with the council and the landowners that allow competitors to land on their properties.

Licence for boaties? I agree. Too many cowboys out there. Brenda Kenny.

I read your story and I totally agree. To me it’s no different to driving a car, the person driving is responsible for people’s on board safety. I drive for Red Cross and the vehicle does not move till all are belted in. But I would like to see the law go one step further anybody on a boat should wear a life jacket, if they are caught

not wearing one the person in charge of the boat gets a hefty fine or have his boat confiscated just like they do with the fisheries if more than the quota of fish is taken. I see on TV were people either they under estimate the weather, run out of fuel or in the bush fall down a mountain, then the people who rescue them have to leave their paid job to go find them. Definitely room for improvement good article, keep ‘em coming. George Barker.

The licencing of boaties is another of these issues where a small minority of reckless participants bring about rules, regulations and costs which most of us don't need. Boating and sea fishing are among the freedoms and pleasures which can still be enjoyed in NZ without intrusion from the nanny state (except of course for fish size and bag limits). The advocates seem to think that licencing will spell the end of irresponsible behaviour: not likely, without a lot of expensive policing. Note that in Australia (NSW, at least) owning a dinghy or jet ski requires not only a licence but a full-day course, the total cost for my son and partner who live there being about $1300 (covers five-year licence). In addition, licences are required for sea fishing. If you want to take turns at driving the boat, such as when water skiing, all drivers will need a licence. So boating is for those with spare cash only. Do we need that in NZ

SUPing the new 'it sport'

Shane believes Nelson’s lack of surf might have helped too, because surfers have tended to join the SUP movement, as have kitesurfers. “It’s a good crossover sport for windsurfing and kitesurfers. When it comes to surfing with a big ten foot board you can catch a wave which is like half a foot, which really works to our advantage because a lot of our customers used to be surfers so it’s a way of them getting back into it.” To join in the fortnightly races through a buoyed course near in Fifeshire Rock and Haulashore Island, enquire at Kitesurf Nelson.

year, says Shane Anderson. “I think it’s just the ease of use in water. I’m not sure why, because to be quite honest it was quite slow to take off in Nelson where in other parts of the country it has been really busy,” he says. On a fine summer day it’s not often that you’d drive past Rocks Rd without seeing at least one stand-up paddleboarder out in the ocean. “The beauty about Nelson is the water is so accessible. The conditions are usually glassy, flat, calm. Literally you stand on the board and paddle so there’s no reason why anyone can’t learn to paddleboard in two minutes.”

Last week’s solutions

Daniel Carter can’t stop Tweeting about stand-up paddleboarding, but the All Black first five isn’t the only one to fall in love with ‘the world’s fastest growing water sport’. Whether or not Nelson’s lack of sufficient surf has played a part, stand-up paddleboarding, or supping as it is apparently also known as, has sharply risen in popularity here. Kitesurf Nelson has sold 50 stand-up paddleboards this summer alone, and its popularity sparked a fortnight race usually held at Tahunanui Beach on Saturday mornings. The main difference between a surf board and a SUP is the sheer volume – oh and the paddle. A stand-up paddleboard is wider and longer, allowing the user to stand up on it easier. You can travel more distance and it’s physical easier than lying down using your arms. There are different models, better suited to either racing or surfing. Rachel Pike, one of the fastest women to SUP from Tahunanui Beach around Haulashore Island and back, has taken to the new waters sport on both a social and competitive level. “I’m a surf lifeguard, pool lifeguard and spend a lot of time around the water so I gave it a go and just really enjoyed it,” she says. “For me you can go out for an hour and you’ve had fun but also a good hour of exercise.” Kitesurf Nelson started renting and selling stand-up paddleboards four years ago, but it has only taken off in the past

Crucial match for Falcons

With two wins from two games things are certainly looking pretty sweet for the Nelson Marlborough Falcons. But with the upcoming fixture against Team Wellington the start of what assistant coach Mark Johnston has likened to “six point games”, the next three rounds will give the Falcons a chance to prove their playoff credentials. With no semi finals, just one of the six teams in the Southern Conference will qualify for the ASB Youth League final, a win against top of the table Team Wellington at home is vital. “I think you can see the top four teams already sorting themselves out already so these games against the likes of Team Wellington, Canterbury United and Youngheart Manawatu will be the crucial ones,” the New Zealand

King Salmon Nelson Marlborough Falcons assistant says. “These are crucial. I guess you could call them six point games.” Mark, who moved into a coaching role alongside Davor Tavich, says the team is “right on track” having defeated Southern United 2-0 in Dunedin and Heartland Wairarapa 3-2 in Blenheim. Midfielder Taine Sweete was red carded shortly after scoring against the league new boys and will be suspended for Sunday’s match against Team Wellington. But other than that, wholesale changes are unlikely to be made elsewhere on the park with the team scoring goals and impressing in the first two rounds. The Falcons take on Team Wellington at Trafalgar Park this Sunday from 2pm.

NZs best laser sailors in town for nationals They came from all over New Zealand and all over the world and many said the sailing was as good as it gets. The Nelson Yacht Club hosted the NZ Laser National Championship and 100 sailors, including some from Holland and Oman, made the trip to battle it out for the number one spot. Andy Maloney of Murrays

Bay Sailing Club, in Auckland, walked away as the national champion but it was the Nelson course that had many of the competitors excited. "The people from out of town said it was the best venue they've ever sailed in," says John MacDuff. The four day regatta lost one day due to high winds on Friday but the final two days were

perfect for sailing. He says there were 49 volunteers helping with the regatta and it has been deemed a huge success. On the water Paul McNabb was the best local sailor and recently won the South Island champs, also held in Nelson. Nelson's Laura Harding was another stand out.

Fishing

Nelson Weekly Your Community Newspaper

with

Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club Tasman Bay still appears to be the hotspot in the top of the south for snapper. The word is you need to be up and about very early in the morning, berley up, get your lines down past the sharks and hopefully into the snapper. Lots of 3035cm fish are being caught in front of Rabbit Island in about 8-10m of water. Long lining seems to be the most predominant way for catching most of the big snapper out in the middle of Tasman Bay, with Barracuda and squid being the best baits. Large rig are also in the Bay and good catches in set nets have been reported. Kahawai are also in abundance with good schools being seen from the main wharf. They have been easy to spot with the birds working flat out above them. Try soft bait or lure from the any spot along the wharf or points on rocks road and you might be pleasantly surprised with the result. Kenepuru is still quite slow and a lot of patience is required to land fish. Although it did produce the winning snapper for Brian Fensom of the DBFC in the Motueka RSA competition held on the weekend. Brian’s fish was just 0.5kg shy of landing him the $2000 prize for a fish over 9.07 kgs or 20lb. Not to be out done wife Andrea

managed to secure 4th place. The Boulder Bank is still going off!!! Large numbers of kingfish are now smashing lures around, so if you ever wanted to land one of these awesome fish, get in your boat and get out there. The spat farm is also fishing well, with stickbaits luring out the fish, and then jigging doing the damage. We have also heard of a few groper caught in the outer sounds up to 10kgs but the mafia will put a contract out on our heads if we disclose exactly where. Some nice crayfish have been taken over in the Abel Tasman recently with some Dawnbreaker divers leading the way. Once again we have been sworn to secrecy but suffice to say some cays up to 8lb nave been taken. Hopefully the wind will start to die down a bit more and looking ahead at the long range forecast for the weekend it looks to be a cracker. The website that we use is www. metvuw.com which gives up to 7 days of forecast of the south island with predicted rain and wind. Used in conjunction with www.swellmap.com which provides wind direction, swell heights and tides of many points around the top of the south. Between them they provide a great way to pick the best fishing days.

Dawnbreaker Jo Dando with a nice little kingfish she caught along the Boulder Bank.

OUTBOARD MOTORS

FISHING SUCCESS: Tawhi Marshall, Grant Stevens and Dave Barton show off their catches from the Motueka RSA fishing contest on Sunday. Grant’s 12.12kg groper was the heaviest in that catergory. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Hell of a haul for fishing comp Rowan Young’s kingfish that tipped the scales at 14.84kg was the biggest fish caught over the three days, but it was an 8.68kg snapper that got the organisers of the weekend’s Motueka RSA Fishing Contest talking. “He was very close to cracking the $2000 which is for 9.06kg,” says organiser Bruce Reid of Brian Fensom’s snapper. “The snapper this year were right up with the best of them.” Each year the Motueka RSA fishing club puts on the three day competition which is followed by a weigh in and a get together by the competitors. There are prizes in each of the adult and junior catergories, but the biggest carrot of $2000 isn’t always a guarantee. It is given to the heaviest snapper over 9kg, and unfortunately for Brian, his effort was agonizingly close. Even second place, Kerry Little, was just one kilogram short of the cash prize. There were around 240 people entered into the competition, which is sponsored by McCashin’s Brewery and Nelson Weekly. The competition began on Friday night and entrants are able to fish anywhere in the country as long as their catch is caught from a fishing rod. Because Friday was a blustery day, most chose to fish on the calmer Saturday or in the morning of the weigh in. Most competitors fished in the Tasman Bay, the more daring headed into deeper waters in the search of bigger fish. “I think most of the bigger fish came

from the D’Urville Island, Stephen’s Island area.” While he declared “it wasn’t that big” when getting his photo taken, Grant Stevens’ 12.12kg groper took out that section and was the second heaviest fish caught on the three days. Rodney Giles caught the heaviest blue cod, which weighed in at 2.16kg, Alan Bradley’s 1.14kg gurnard was the heaviest in that section and Jason Inch had the heaviest kahawhai at 3.06kg. But when it came to counting crays, the results were few and far between. Ethan Peek’s 3.98kg effort taking out the crayfish category. In the junior section, Kody Cotton had the heaviest snapper, Tanisha Smith caught the heaviest herring, Tanuha Smith caught the heaviest spotty, Jacob Ching the heaviest gurnard and Madison Sharkie had the heaviest kahawhai. Money raised from the competition, fish auction and beer sales goes towards the Motueka RSA’s fishing club while $1000 was donated to Nelson Marine Radio. “We guarantee them $1000 each year from the fish auction. It’s such a good cause.” Bruce says it was another top competition with more entries this year, including more from outside of Motueka. He says while 250 people would have been ideal, the organisers would probably struggle to cope with any more than that. “We’re very happy with it. The weather really cooperated.”

Softballers too strong for home team It was a tough tournament for the local players but Saxton Ballpark is the talk of New Zealand softball after hosting another outstanding tournament. The ballpark is widely regarded as one of the best, if not the best, in the country and Nelson softball's Derryn French says it was again the envy of many of the travelling teams to the New Zealand under 19 softball tournament.

On the pitch the Southern Pride team, made up of players from the smaller regions of the South Island, lost every game but Derryn says their players are young and will improve. "We weren't good enough to win games. We had periods where we were right in it but we weren't mentally tough enough to close out games but they'll be better for it and they will be back in the same grade next year."

This week I’d like to introduce the three members of my senior leadership team for Nelson Bays Police. They are all highly experienced Police Officers who are responsible for specific areas of our policing operation across Nelson Bays. Senior Sergeant John Price: John is our response manager and has oversight of all 60 of our response staff based as far a field as Takaka, Motueka, Murchison and Wakefield, along with Richmond and Nelson. When you ring Police it is most likely that one of John’s staff will attend. Response staff also do their share of prevention work such as foot patrols and road policing and also strive to provide a high quality service to victims. John has been a Police Officer for 38 years and has been based in Nelson Bays for 28 of those years. He says the biggest advance he has seen in that time was the advent of the Wanganui Computer, enabling Police, the Ministry of Transport and the Justice sector to share information. Prior to that something as simple as querying a vehicle’s registration took more than a day. As of last year Police Officers can do tasks such as vehicle queries and much more instantly on their iPhone or iPad. Detective Senior Sergeant Wayne McCoy: Wayne is our investigations manager, responsible for all criminal investigations ranging from homicides to fraud and everything in between. He leads a team of 25 staff which includes a Child Protection Team, Adult Sexual Assault Team, Crime Squad, Forensic Investigators and a Tactical Unit. Tactical covers high volume crime such as lower level dishonesty, theft and drug offending. Wayne joined Police in 1976 and came to Nelson Bays in 1994 from Timaru. During his time in the south he was deployed to the Aromoana massacre as a member of the Armed Offender’s Squad. Wayne has had a long career as a rugby player and coach and is also a crack bridge player. Senior Sergeant Dave Gibson: Dave Gibson is the prevention manager and is based at Nelson. He has 26 years policing experience, working in a variety of roles in the Gisborne area (including Wairoa and Ruatoria) and in Nelson. Dave manages the Youth Services, Community, Family Violence, Alcohol Harm Reduction, Highway Patrol and Strategic Traffic sections. He is predominantly responsible for ensuring Police are in the right place at the right time to be able to prevent crime and crashes from occurring, ultimately preventing people from becoming victims.
